Fusion Academy Celebrates Grand Opening in Montclair

F

usion Academy Montclair celebrated its Grand Opening on November 16, with attendees touring the brand new campus and hearing stories from Fusion students and families. The tour featured a look at their state-of-the-art recording studio, the Homework Cafe, and the mixed media art studio, which hosts a roster of elective classes. Fusion Academy is a private middle and high school that serves students who may not fit into the traditional school model; including students with ADHD, dyslexia, social challenges, school anxiety, challenging schedules, as well as accelerated learners. The academy offers rolling enrollment, and uses a one-to-one teaching model, allowing the learning experience to be personalized for each student. Classes are offered at three levels: essential, college prep, and honors. Students can enroll full-time, take classes for credit, or use Fusion’s tutoring services. Connect with Fusion Academy Montclair and learn about enrollment by visiting their website at www.fusionmontclair.com.

There’s More Than Jewelry at this Boutique

Trinity Academy Receives Reaccreditation Honor

L

ooking for a one-stop shop for your holiday shopping this year? You’re in luck: Pink Jewels, an affordable boutique shop located in Livingston, has it all. While their name indicates the extensive jewelry and accessory collections they offer, this trendy store has recently added clothing and home décor to its line. Fashion-lovers will appreciate the store’s mix of trendsetting tops and jackets, hats, sweaters, pajamas, and stylish handbags. Homebodies will find unique home decor and accessories, including jewelry boxes, glassware, bookends, candles and pillows. And for holiday shoppers looking for a present or two, don’t worry– with gift sets, fashionable jewelry, and so many one-of-a-kind items on display, Pink Jewels has you covered.

T

rinity Academy in Caldwell was notified by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) and the Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (CESS) that it has earned its reaccreditation, which is the gold standard for measuring and advancing school improvement. Trinity Academy is one of just 167 schools and school systems in the US and other countries that have earned accreditation this year. “This reaccreditation [as a fully accredited Elementary and Secondary school] is a testament to our talented teachers,” notes Principal Linda Payonzeck. The entire facility is “dedicated to seeing our students reach their highest potential and we strive to create well-rounded, high-achieving students,” she says.

Shop jewelry, accessories, clothing, and home decor when you visit Pink Jewels in Livingston, or you can shop online at www.pink-jewels.com. Follow their Instagram, @pinkjewelsnj, to get a sneak peak of their latest items.

The MSA-CESS was created to improve the quality and accountability of schools. Accreditation is a validation of a school’s quality and student achievement. Adds Principal Payonzeck, “This accreditation validates the great work that occurs both in and out of the classroom at Trinity Academy.”

Walter Bauman Jewelers is Expanding the West Orange Location

L

ongtime family-owned jewelry store, Walter Bauman Jewelers is expanding its West Orange location and now offers everything it needs to be your personal jeweler, just in time for the holiday season. The larger store allows for more estate and vintage jewelry, more new merchandise, more jewelers and watchmakers, more appraisers and jewelry experts to help customers appraise or sell their jewelry, more designers to make custom, one-of-a-kind pieces and a new bridal boutique. In addition, this location of Walter Bauman Jewelers will be debuting Kerry’s Corner, a new fashion jewelry collection. According to Walter R. Bauman, the founder’s grandson and current owner, the most exciting part of becoming the largest jewelry store in New Jersey is the ability to showcase its personalized service in this new 10,000 square foot space. “Today’s customers want more than a vast selection, they want a trusted advisor, whether they are buying, selling, repairing or appraising jewelry. Our goal is to do just that and become their personal jeweler. A jewelry store can be an intimidating place for many shoppers, but my employees know that their priority is to help the customers and make them comfortable. Our goal was never to be the biggest jeweler, but the best.” To thank its customers for continuing to support Walter Bauman Jewelers, the store is currently holding an expansion sale through December 31st. This sale offers 10-50% off most of the jewelry in-store, plus an additional 10% off one item.

There’s Money Everywhere Perfect Pawn Redefines a Familiar Industry By Rhonda L. Rivera, Photos by Dan Epstein

E

ver wonder what the $25 painting picked up at a garage sale is actually worth? A client of Perfect Pawn did just that, and learned the original Dean Cornwell painting had a value of $15,000! With the help of Perfect Pawn, he parlayed that garage sale find into a new car. Need to clear out clutter, liquidate an estate or downsize? Perfect Pawn offers an easy way to turn unwanted items (including garage sale purchases) into cash. Simply bring the item into the showroom, and the value will be appraised for free. Then, a cash value will be offered with the option to sell it to Perfect Pawn or keep it. It is the transparency of the transaction that catapults Perfect Pawn above the rest. What types of items does Perfect Pawn accept? The short answer is almost anything. According to Dan Risis, Managing Director of Perfect Pawn, “If it doesn’t breathe or explode, we’ll buy it” (the only exception: antique guns). There is no minimum value requirement, but the upper limit is $3 million. In addition to jewelry, “gift cards are extremely popular,” he notes.

Also available at Perfect Pawn are instant, shortterm loans that use items as collateral. Private and discrete, these loans run from $25 to $3 million, are typically written for 90 days and can be renewed so long as the interest is paid. Once fully repaid, the collateral is returned. Risis views this as empowering–offering loans without a negative credit risk. “Sometimes good people find themselves in bad situations,” he says. Small businesses especially find this service invaluable. Risis brings a new perspective to the age-old industry. In 2010, he took over one small jewelry store in Summit owned by his mother for decades, and has since transformed it into one of the largest pawn chains in the tri-state area. To date, Perfect Pawn has nine locations throughout northern New Jersey. Risis encourages readers to look around their houses, because “there’s money everywhere.”

EASY WAYS TO BOOST YOUR SELF-

“Feeling Thankful!” F

We are so fortunate to have such amazing patients. Thank you for your support and entrusting us with your care!

eeling good about yourself these days? If so, you’re ahead of the game, since a recent study shows your perception of your own image has a profound effect on how you present yourself to the rest of the world. Those findings could be empowering in light of the fact that even small changes to your self-care routine can significantly boost your self-confidence. The study by researchers at the Stanford Graduate School of Business found those who believe in their own attractiveness view themselves as having higher social status. “The finding that your assessment of yourself shapes your view of yourself and others puts power into your hands,” the authors note.

Want to give yourself some instant confidence? Consider how these science-based suggestions may help you put your best foot forward when dealing with everything life throws your way.

1

Get moving. Regardless of your fitness goals (or lack thereof), the fact is you’re likely to feel better physically, emotionally and mentally after you exercise. Research also shows it can improve your self-esteem.

2

Ramp up your smile. Scientists say our brains are zapped with an instant mood boost when we smile, and that boost is reinforced when others smile back. Further, whiter teeth can have a direct effect on our social and professional interactions, and they’re now easy to achieve through consumer brands like Rembrandt’s 1 Week Whitening Kit that can achieve professional-level results at home within a week. In study results transcending gender, age, income, education, employment and marital status, 58 percent of participants were more likely to be hired after whitening their teeth, while 53 percent received higher salary offers. Sixty-one percent were deemed more confident, and 54 percent generated more interest from others in terms of further interactions or dating.

A PLACE FOR YOU. A PLAN FOR YOU.

NOW OPEN!

3 4

5

Let your body language communicate self-respect. Keeping your shoulders pulled back and your body straight and tall communicates confidence to your brain, one study confirms. Other research found the most empowering stance is one in which your arms are held slightly away from your torso, your body is open and your head is up. Optimize color in your clothing. The right shade may light up your entire face and have a surprising impact on your mood. “Choosing the color of your office, your clothes or your desktop should not be taken lightly colors do affect our moods and productivity,” states a recent article on Scienceofpeople.com. “When given the choice, picking a color that will work with you and not against you can only help.” Wear scent strategically. Because our brains link certain smells to positive experiences, research suggests we may be able to ramp up our confidence with scents that remind us of happy times. That’s why aromatherapy can help alleviate anxiety, depression and sleeplessness, and improve quality of life for those with chronic health issues, confirms Mayo Clinic.

Bottom line: When you’re taking care of yourself and projecting your best self, you’re far more likely to project the confidence you need to deal effectively with life. “Confidence can make or break a lot of things,” advises Lecia Bushak on Medicaldaily.com. “In our extrovert-centric society, confidence can get you a job, a girlfriend, and the courage to say no to people or situations that are toxic to you. Confidence is knowing yourself and taking care of yourself, too.” — (BPT)

PROMOTE COOL-WEATHER SKINCARE 4 W

Suburban Essex

Silver WInner

hen temperatures plummet, a seasonal wardrobe change helps protect most of your body from the elements. A skin-care regimen can help ensure your delicate face and hands fare well even as blustery winds blow.

1

Healthy hydration. Proper hydration affects numerous body functions, such as ensuring your muscles and joints are well lubricated and helping your body to regulate its temperature. Water is the solution most experts recommend, but non-sugary options like tea can also help.

2

Food factors. During the winter it’s especially important to be sure you’re consuming enough healthy fats and omega-3s to promote moisture from the inside out. Good sources include eggs, nuts, avocados and lean proteins like fish, turkey, chicken and beef.

Dr. Andrea Buccino SPORTS CHIROPRACTOR

• Recognition-Relief-Recovery • Joint & Muscle Injuries • Treating Both Athletes & Non-Athletes

3

Clothing concerns. Be sure to cover up adequately when outdoors to prevent the chapping and irritation that can come from sustained exposure. Also be wary of precipitation; be sure your outer layers repel water and that you’re able to change into dry clothing promptly if you do get wet.

6 Pompton Ave, Suite 23 Cedar Grove

DrAndreaBuccino.com

Ample exercise. Getting your heart rate up helps get your blood circulating, which is not only good for burning calories and beefing up your muscles, it also promotes healthy skin. Sweating helps push impurities out of your pores, and the increased circulation helps distribute nutrients throughout your body, including the skin.

5

Avoid irritants. Take care to avoid potential problems by sticking to softly textured fabrics that won’t get itchy, take it easy on the exfoliating and be mindful of skin care products, soaps and detergents that may be particularly drying to already parched skin. Also skip the temptation to warm up in a hot shower, which can dry your skin even further.

6

Manage moisture. Oil-free options let you add moisture without over-stimulating oil glands, while natural oils such as coconut or jojoba are ideal for dryer skin. Apply lotion after every shower to trap in moisture and as needed throughout the day to prevent chapping and cracking, and give special attention to areas that are prone to damage, such as your lips and hands.

Elegant ideas for a meal worth celebrating

D

elighting guests in unexpected ways is the hallmark of exceptional entertaining. With a little creative flair, you can elevate your menu to impress guests with every course.

A savory appetizer is set off beautifully by fresh, sweet grapes in this Grape and Goat Cheese Crostini. Festive, bright and refreshing, grapes are a versatile ingredient that take dishes to the next level, making them ideal for special occasions. Not only are grapes a smart choice to keep on hand for healthy snacking and everyday eating, the vibrant colors and flavors

bring extra life to a basic protein. For a unique twist on a main dish, try dressing up chicken with an elegant addition like fresh grapes. The secret to a winning dessert is presentation, and the vibrant colors of red, green or black grapes lend just the right look to these tasty Mini Pavlovas with Lemon Cream and Grapes. What’s more, the juicy sweetness offsets the tartness of the lemon for an explosion of flavor perfection. Diamond Minds

Embracing Empathy By, Barry Farber

Barry Farber

D

uring a recent television interview with The Amazing Kreskin he opened my mind to a new way to look at connecting and building important relationships. Listening was one of the topics we were taking about but it went much deeper than that. How can you understand someone by putting yourself in their situation and in their shoes. It not only helps to connect to that person but establish a clear and positive path to move forward together whether it’s a personal or business relationship. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines empathy as:

empathy NOUN | em·pa·thy The action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner

Here are a couple of ideas to remember. 1. The next time you’re having a conversation with someone don’t be afraid of silence. There’s just as much happening when no one is speaking as when they are. 2. Remove the phone from the table during meetings or meals so you don’t have a machine separating you from the connection you’re making with a human. With all the advances in technology the one area we are sacrificing (especially with millennials) is the ability to communicate face to face, one on one. 3. Watch the other persons body language and never forget how important eye contact is. They really are the windows to the soul. Almost 30 years ago before I started my own business one of my good friends and mentors told me to never underestimate the power of looking someone in the eye to understand where they’re coming from and what they’re thinking and feeling. 4. And one of the most effective ways to connect with people can happen when you’re not even around them. Meditate and find somewhere quiet where silence allows you to settle the mind and you will be amazed at how many answers come to you about your relationships and the needs of people in your environment. That’s where many breakthroughs happen.
