McLaughlin explains, “There is just a connection between what we do. Chiropractic works the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal systems while Acupuncture helps with pain and muscle issues, as well as fertility, digestive, and mental health.” McLaughlin and Reade specialize in fertility treatments in the Madison location. Dr. Reade states, “I can stimulate a woman’s hormone production and ovulation with needles, while Dr. McLaughlin will perform a technique that opens up her hips.” Physical Therapist James Bonardi joins the team in Fairfield at FFWPT, located in the 360 Fitness Performance and Sports Facility. As one might expect, the FFWPT location sees plenty of athletes. McLaughlin notes, “We treat a lot of people who practice CrossFit, in addition to NFL pros, Olympic hopefuls and student-athletes.” Athlete injuries are often specific to their sport. “Football players tend to have hip flexor issues, while baseball players and CrossFitters often need core and shoulder strengthening exercises.” Challenging the common assumption that chiropractors and physical therapists operate independently, Dr. McLaughlin and Dr. Bonardi often work together on the same patient. When they work on athletes, they frequently utilize one of their favorite forms of treatment, A.R.T. (active release technique), to restore core musculature function. The Fairfield Wellness and Advanced Acupuncture clientele are by no means limited to athletes; or even adults. The team treats children for issues including

nowing the warning signs of a mini-stroke could help save a life. A survey conducted by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association shows onethird of United States adults have had symptoms consistent with a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a ministroke, but only 3 percent called 911 for help. “Ignoring any stroke signs could be a deadly mistake,” said Mitch Elkind, M.D., chair of the American Stroke Association Advisory Committee. “Only a formal medical diagnosis with brain imaging can determine whether you’re having a TIA or a stroke.”

The survey showed 35 percent of respondents experienced at least one sign of a TIA or mini-stroke, such as sudden trouble speaking or a severe headache with no known cause. According to the online survey, those who suffered symptoms were more likely to wait it out, rest or take medicine rather than call 911. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability in the United States and among the top five causes of death. However, with proper, timely medical attention, stroke is largely treatable. The faster you are treated, the more likely you are to have a positive outcome.

Cooperman Family Pavilion to Usher in New Era of Family-Centered Care at Saint Barnabas Medical Center
S
aint Barnabas Medical Center, a flagship facility of RWJBarnabas Health, will unveil a soaring, five-story, 241,000 square-foot addition to the Livingston medical center on September 6. Saint Barnabas Medical Center, renowned for its high-quality clinical care and medical services, received a $25 million gift from Leon and Toby Cooperman, which provided the catalyst for the construction of the vast expansion to the medical center, to be named the Cooperman Family Pavilion. “The extraordinary Cooperman Family Pavilion exemplifies the remarkable care that is provided at this award-winning medical center,” said Barry H. Ostrowsky, President and Chief Executive Officer of RWJBarnabas Health. The beautiful, natural lightinfused building reflects evidence-based approaches to promoting healing and improving care. The pavilion will encompass 114 new private rooms; an expansive 56-bassinet Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU); many of the outpatient diagnostic services; a central registration area; and a same-day surgery suite. A new, three-story parking garage also has been built to accommodate more than 400 vehicles. Patients, family members, community members, physicians and staff all provided their suggestions and input design details include curb-free showers to prevent falls, acoustical
materials to lessen noise and hybrid operating suites that allow surgeons to transfer easily from minimally invasive to open procedures. The NICU will have a series of single rooms in a pod design that allows families to bond with their baby within a few steps of nearby medical staff. There also will be two new family rooms that offer parents the opportunity to “sleep over” and care for their baby within the hospital environment prior to their discharge.
