ongratulations on another issue of “Inside Livingston” which is chock full of information on great businesses in our area. As we are all aware, small businesses are the backbone of our economy and when we, as Livingston residents, spend our money with local businesses and services, we are supporting our neighbors, keeping our streets vital and retaining our money locally. Livingston is having another fantastic year. There is tremendous excitement about the completion of the new beautiful turf field next to our high school. We are finishing up work with a branding consultant to generate a new town logo and tagline which will help focus and strengthen Livingston’s identity and presence. Our branding will then serve as a basis for our new forthcoming town smart phone app which will enable residents to communicate with town in a new efficient and streamlined manner. I believe our new app will be where the rubber meets the road in terms of good government. On April 30th, we will have our first annual “Pick It Up, Livingston!” event where teams of volunteers will spread throughout the town cleaning up our streets and getting the litter out of our woods and streams. Additionally, we have exciting new retail coming in to town including a Shake Shack, Container Store, Blase Pizza and others. We will have our second annual food truck Summerfest, June 10 which is looking to build on the massive success of last year’s event. When you have a town with great schools, wonderful neighborhoods and access to so much else, it’s no wonder that Livingston is the town not only where people want to live, but where their children move back to. Welcome home, Shawn R. Klein

Innovative valve replacement surgery. Because you can’t be replaced. As New Jersey’s most extensive heart care network, RWJBarnabas Health performs more Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacements (TAVR) than any hospital or health care system in the state—and our outcomes far exceed national benchmarks in safety, life expectancy, and risks of complications, too. Available at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, patients usually go home only a few days after the procedure. For more information and to make an appointment with one of New Jersey’s top cardiologists, visit rwjbh.org/tavr.

“We’re more than a congregation, we’re a family.” Since 1953, as a regional Reform congregation, Temple Sholom of West Essex has epitomized the motto above. “It’s a true reflection of what we are,” says Lynne BrennenFriedlander, one of the temple’s co-presidents. “We are a welcoming, inclusive congregation that values the cultural, educational and spiritual aspects of Judaism.” Temple Sholom offers a wide range of services, educational, and social activities “that start with a Jewish base,” says Brennen-Friedlander. The temple has both a full-time rabbi and cantor who are very active within the congregation. The executive board has implemented “a holistic K-12 Jewish education’ for children. They have hired a new religious school director, brought on young leaders for youth groups and introduced programming for tots to high school seniors. Temple Sholom believes they are “investing in helping all of our members have Jewish grandchildren.” In a recent decision, the temple leaders voted to eliminate religious school tuition to help their member families raise Jewish children without undue financial burden. The temple is involved in a multitude of community programs, including partnerships with Paterson’s Oasis, which serves homeless women and children, the Interfaith Hospitality Network with Notre Dame Church in North Caldwell and Habitat for Humanity in Newark. “Both our clergy and our lay leadership are relatively young and dynamic,” says Brennen-Friedlander, and this is attracting new congregants and new ideas. “We welcome all who wants to join us,” says Brennen-Friedlander. Spreading Smiles for 87 Years Kiwanis Club of Livingston’s History is Helping People in Need By Janis Hashe
I
t is impossible to calculate how many people have been helped by the Kiwanis Club of Livingston since it was chartered in 1930. From scholarships given to college-bound kids, to providing funds to buy ambulances and equipment for the volunteer fire department, to supporting the Livingston Police Child ID Program, Children’s Theatre, YMCA, Public Library and the Arts Council, the organization’s roots in the community spread deep and wide.

“As long as there are people in need in our community, there will be a Kiwanis Club.”
WE WIN… YOU WIN! Thank You for Voting Us BEST OPTICIANS!
—Mike Pollack, Club Secretary
Says Club Secretary Mike Pollack,“We are just as important to the community today as we were 87 years ago. With dwindling public money for people in need, volunteer community service organizations like Kiwanis become even more important. Besides the funds we distribute and hands-on services we render, our biggest contribution is our Service Leadership Programs. Kiwanis sponsors K-Kids clubs in grammar schools, Builder’s Clubs in middle schools, Key Clubs in high schools and Circle-K clubs in colleges. These organizations are designed to teach young people the value of community service and to develop leadership skills and attitudes as they run their clubs and plan and hold their own events. Our club sponsors two Builders Clubs, a Key Club (the largest student organization at Livingston High School), and a Circle K club at New Jersey Institute of Technology.” The Club is planning its annual signature fundraising event, the Kiwanis Karnival, which will run May 9-13. “On May 13,” says Pollack, “we close to the general public and open to the families and members of the The Arc, the Horizon School, and other special-needs children and adults. They ride the rides, play the games, and eat for free for two hours, leaving with gifts, prizes and a smile from ear-toear.” Currently, the Club has 42 members and is actively recruiting more. “As long as there are people in need in our community, there will be a Kiwanis Club,” says Pollack. “We feel our commitment to our community and neighbors as keenly as our predecessors did. We are looking to continue to grow, attract new members, find new community projects to support and people to help.” Anyone that would like to volunteer or join us please contact us at the number below. B
onita Areman of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage has been named a 2016 Five Star Real Estate Agent. Award winners are determined based on thorough research by Five Star Professional who contacts recent homeowners to identify candidates. Award winners are chosen for their professional excellence, quality service and client satisfaction. Areman is in an exclusive group, as less than 2 percent of real estate agents in New Jersey received this honorable recognition. On being awarded, Areman says, “It is an honor and a privilege to be named a 2016 Five Star Real Estate Agent. Positive client feedback and experience are the keys to my success.” While the award is the icing on top of the cake, for Areman the real joy of her business is changing lives. “Seeing the smiles and relief when I put a sold sign on a home or hand new home keys to a client is worth all the hard work.” she states. Design Without Budget Anxiety Decorating Den puts clients’ needs first By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein
T
he client’s budget is top of mind with Decorating Den Interiors owner Paula Markman. “People are sometimes intimidated about interior decorating, thinking it will be too expensive,” she says. “I work with clients to make them comfortable. We establish a realistic budget together, and work from there.”
Paula Markman
Markman notes the amount of custom upholstery, window treatments, room accessories, and other design furnishings is often what determines how much redoing a room or home costs. Once a project is proposed, she presents her designs using a 13-inch iPad and brings along samples of fabrics, wallpaper, metal and wood chips to show the client what a change would look like. “Clients usually say, ‘I want to finish the room,’” Markman says. To accommodate she uses custom and non-custom pieces to create a unique look. “If they have a piece that needs to be designed around, I welcome that challenge,” she says. “No job is too big or too small.” Decorating Den Interiors

EATING EXPERIENCE Porto by Antonio Brings Italy to Livingston By Rhonda L. Rivera
Photography by Daniel Epstein
A
ntonio Dinis, the man behind Porto by Antonio, lives by the axiom that “nothing is better than eating.” He applies this philosophy to his newest restaurant in Livingston (formerly Cosi), setting out to create a different kind of pizzeria. And by all accounts, he is succeeding.
The idea behind Porto is to showcase quality ingredients. Dinis takes pride in doing all of the buying for his restaurants, double-checking to assure everything meets his exacting standards. He even sources flour and Nutella from Italy, preferring their more authentic taste. Moreover, he oversees the making of all dishes served at Porto, from homemade pasta to pizza dough and even the mozzarella. The culmination of all this hard work is

Dinis’s signature wood-burning pizza, which is both delicious and delicate, and not to be missed. Dinis brings decades of experience to Porto. Born in Venezuela to a Portuguese father and Sicilian mother, it could be said food runs in his veins. His grandfather was a chef aboard a cruise line, while his mother’s family all were in the restaurant industry. continued on page 18

Unique
A EATING EXPERIENCE continued from page 16
He immigrated to the United States when he was 16, settling in Rutherford, New Jersey, and soon set his eyes on another service profession: nursing. All through nursing school, however, Dinis could not ignore the allure of food service, working as a server and bartender to pay his way. With only one more semester left in school, he made the difficult decision to change professions. Photo: Courtesy of Porto
Healthcare’s loss was the restaurant industry’s gain, as Dinis soon found his way into commercial kitchens both in New York City and New Jersey. His quest for more food knowledge brought him to Italy, where he worked in various regions, learning different specialties directly from Italian masters.
Photo: Courtesy of Porto
Back in the States, Dinis worked as a restaurant consultant while scoping out his own first location. Together with his best friend Pedro Gomes, he opened Porto by Antonio in North Bergen in November 2014. This venue quickly won accolades and in June 2016, they opened Porto here in Livingston. The pair also own Munchies in Newark—serving Venezuelan street food—and have plans to open additional eateries in the future. Dinis makes it a point to visit all three locations almost daily in order to assure the finest dining for all.

Feel Engaged & Fit: Live Well at Every Age
E
xercise and physical activity benefits every area of your life, and is especially beneficial for older adults. Exercise helps to increase strength and fitness, improve your balance, increase and improve your sex life, manage and prevent diseases, boost your body’s immune system, reduce feelings of depression, and increase overall wellbeing. We know now more than ever that older adults need to keep moving and be active. Regardless of health and physical abilities, we can gain a lot by staying physically active. As we age, cell damage increases and our metabolism changes, we gain fat, and lose muscle mass, making us vulnerable to disease. Even 15 minutes a day of moderate activity slows down the aging process, allowing us to stay engaged and live an independent life. Many types of exercises and physical activities can improve overall health
and physical ability. Exercise generally falls into four categories: endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. Endurance activities help build strength and improve balance—examples include: dancing, swimming, and jogging. Strength work include lifting weights and using resistance bands increases muscles which can help to carry out daily activities such as climbing stairs, carrying groceries and even doing housework. Balance exercises help prevent falls which are a common problem for older adults. Exercise like heel to toe walking regularly can help enormously. Flexibility and stretching keeps the body agile and limber, giving more freedom for everyday living. Physical activity and exercise benefits every aspect of the lives of older adults. While family history or genetics cannot be controlled, quality of life can be improved through exercise. Trainers like Maria Olivieri, at Olivieri

Regal Bank Offers Valuable Customer Service and Convenience By Christine S. Maxwell
D
an Tower, executive vice president of Regal Bank in Livingston, believes that a company’s customer service is its most valuable offering.
“It’s really the staff and the branch that makes Regal Bank successful. We have customers who only want to deal with a specific teller and they will wait for him or her. To that customer, Regal Bank is that teller. Regal Bank recognizes this fact and supports outstanding customer service,” says Tower. Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, Regal Bank, headquartered in Livingston, has nine branches concentrated in the Northern New Jersey area. In addition to another location in Livingston, the bank has branches in Essex, Somerset, Morris, and Union counties. Besides excellent customer service, Regal Bank offers convenient products like online banking. Consumers enjoy the ease of checking account balances, transferring funds, paying bills, and completing other basic transactions without leaving their homes. This service has increased more than 50 percent in volume in the past year.
Taking a photo of checks and depositing them via the mobile phone platform is another convenience. Deposits through mobile banking have increased in volume by 75 percent in the past year. “Customers have embraced technology. They like being able to make deposits during all hours of the day,” remarks Tower. Customers can also choose a traditional array of consumer loan products. A large portion of Regal Bank’s business is home equity and automobile loans. According to Tower, Regal offers competitive loans, but the Bank’s careful servicing of these loans is especially appealing to the clients. Commercial real estate lending is another important part of Regal Bank’s business. Area small businesses, startups, and apartment buildings receive loans to start and maintain their businesses. Regal Bank’s commitments extend beyond the branches and into the communities. They sponsor a Community Concert Series, a Dog Pawrade in Livingston benefiting a local animal shelter, a hospital fundraiser, and a program for children with special needs. Employees are encouraged to participate in civic clubs and community events. Regal Bank

★★★★★ “I’ve known Cam for more than four years and have depended upon his expertise twice.” Cam is passionate about real estate. He is honest and positive. From the moment he stepped into my house for his presentation to the second we left the closing table he was supportive and devoted to my best interests. Cam helped us determine the fair market value for my home. He put together a well-thought out marketing strategy and used the latest technology and a targeted advertising campaign to attract buyers. My property was under contract in five days and closed for the asking price! I am so happy I followed his advice. Cam listens to his clients and understands their needs. It is stressful to be involved in two real estate transactions at the same time – selling one property while buying another. Cam eased us through the process and made it much easier for us to cope. When challenges did arise, he was able to resolve them quickly and professionally. I have recommended Cam to many of my friends and family members. He is the person to call if you are seriously looking to sell your home. Sincerely, O. Fallas

What Happens in This Vegas Won’t Stay in Vegas! By Cynthia Burns

t is impossible to choose one adjective to describe Vegas NJ. Sam Pellegrino prefers luxurious and contemporary to depict the exclusive party venue he owns with his wife, Melanie. Vegas NJ is the most recent event and catering facility the Pellegrinos have developed. Simply stated, the couple grew weary of country club and temple party venues and wanted to create unique alternatives. “There is no reason to go elsewhere,” says Pellegrino. “We plan exclusive parties with competitive pricing that is often less than the competition.” The staff will help clients plan the perfect Sweet 16 celebration, wedding, bar or bat mitzvah, quinceanera and social or corporate event. Pellegrino emphasizes that Vegas NJ takes care of everything; clients do not need to coordinate with outside vendors for the selection of music, catering, video and photogra-
phy, party favors and flowers. “All the food is made on-site in our commercial kitchen,” he says. Describing the chefs as inspired, he adds, “We offer eclectic menu options and traditional fare. We also serve kosher and glatt kosher.” Pellegrino is eager to design the perfect party for new clients. “We have a vibrant nightclub atmosphere, contemporary décor, a touch of elegance and a hint of the Las Vegas strip.” Certainly, guests will be in awe of the 800-gallon stingray tank, the custom baby grand piano and the 75-foot color-changing wave wall, complemented by a giant cinema screen.

Planet Fitness Where Everyday People Build a Lasting, Active Lifestyle By Cynthia Burns, Photo by Dan Epstein
A
nthony Falange is pumped about opening Planet Fitness in East Hanover. He chose the Planet Fitness franchise because of the gym’s belief in a Judgement Free Zone®. Falange, who owns seven other Planet Fitness gyms with his wife, Naomi, explains, “We are geared to clients who are interested in general fitness.” He notes that about 93% of the population who belong to gyms fit in this category. “We cater to everyday people, with an emphasis on staying fit and healthy” he says. “We offer a relaxing, comfortable environment with tons of state-of-theart equipment. Membership includes unlimited small group fitness training by a certified trainer at no extra cost.” He explains that an intimidation factor exists among potential clients. They are afraid of being judged due to their age,
weight or fitness level. With a guiding principle of judgement free, Planet Fitness aims to instill in clients the desire to build a lasting, active lifestyle. Clients can expect a high-quality fitness experience in a welcoming environment. An added incentive is a low monthly membership fee that Falange says is unmatched, without locking into a contract. Included with membership is a full schedule of classes that offer strength building, cardiovascular workouts and pointers on using the machinery. Planet Fitness has brand-name cardio and strength equipment, fully equipped locker rooms and flat-screen televisions. What clients won’t find are 100-pound weights, dumbbell racks or musclebound body builders. “We control the
environment so that everyone feels comfortable,” says Falange. The gym promotes respect for all clients, so there’s no slamming of weights on the floor or grunting patrons. Members willing to share their successes are featured in advertisements rather than spandex clad models. Falange is fully committed to the Planet Fitness business model and its Judgement Free Zone®. The East Hanover location is one of 1,200 locations in the United States and other countries. The Falanges are enthusiastic to offer an affordable and welcoming option in a planet saturated with gyms. PLANET FITNESS

4 Conversation Starters that Foster Your Child’s Critical Thinking
C
ritical thinking has always been an important part of education. Here are four conversation starters that will inspire your child to put on his or her thinking cap:
ST R I V E TO B E
Different!
A FA B U L O U S , C H I C , O N E - O F - A - K I N D C LOT H I N G B O U T I Q U E
What’s going on (in this show or movie)? Books and articles that your child reads are perfect topics of conversation, but not all children are eager to talk about them. If so, TV shows and movies are a great alternative. What do you think about _____? Start conversations about the issues that matter to you, but more importantly, ask what your child thinks. What do you think we should do? When appropriate, try reversing roles and have your child suggest ideas and make decisions. Why do you think so? Everyone has opinions. As parents, one of the best things we can teach our children as they mature is how to listen to and respect different opinions and formulate their own. The more you encourage your child to talk about issues and vocalize opinions, the more you will bolster his or her critical thinking. Since 1977, Huntington has helped students by developing the skills, confidence, and motivation to help them succeed. Huntington

TRANSFORMING HOMES for Over 20 Years
Spring Cleaning Should Include East Gutter Cleaning By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

A
s harsh winter weather gives way to softer spring, now’s the time to clean and inspect a home’s gutters, say the experts at East Gutter Cleaning.
Since 2004, the company has provided top-quality services, including gutter cleaning, installations and repairs, and covers, as well as underground drain work, power washing and roof cleaning. East Gutter Cleaning will inspect gutters and provide a full report of any needed repairs. Leaking or damaged gutters can cause structural damage as well as water flows into home living areas or basement. East Gutter Cleaning can provide a free phone estimate, based on the home’s square footage. Many long-term customers have their gutters cleaned as many as four times a year, depending on the type of trees on the property, and regular appointments can be scheduled. But in spring, the busiest time, it’s wise to be proactive and book as soon as possible. East Gutter Cleaning
