Spring Cleaning, Done Organically Winterwear Cleaned with Care By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein

ow that the weather actually matches the calendar, it’s time to exchange the heavy coats and comforters for lighter ones. Before putting away these winter items, though, it is always a good idea to have them cleaned. Grace Cleaners, on South Livingston Avenue for the past seven years, gets the job done with care and professionalism. Owner Jessica Kim says, “We use only organic cleaning products, with no harmful chemicals, for everything we clean.” And different items are treated differently, as opposed to being tossed into a machine together. Down coats, for instance, have to be cleaned at a much lower temperature than other articles of clothing, so as to prevent the down from shrinking. And after they are cleaned, they are carefully checked to make sure that all buttons, hooks and zippers are still attached and properly functioning.

Winter comforters also receive TLC at Grace Cleaners. Kim notes that they are washed individually, because “A family shouldn’t have to have its intimate household items mixed up with another family’s.” She adds, “Generally, a comforter takes three days to Jaw Luscious clean, but we can do an emergency rush service if a customer Dropping Lighting needs it.”

Do Happy!
with WARTER STRONG FOUNDATION, INC.
Oren, Jake, Ryan, Barbara and Zach Warter
By Christine S. Maxwell
C
an we ever find happiness during life’s often unbearable challenges? Barbara Warter, the founder of the Warter Strong Foundation, Inc. in Livingston, believes that we can by understanding what happy truly means. Happy, according to Warter, is a verb, it is a call to action, it is a choice, and it is empowering. The “Do Happy” movement resulted from Warter’s challenges. After losing both her husband Oren to Leukemia and her oldest son Ryan, born with multiple disabilities, Warter realized that she had a choice. She could live her life overcome with grief or find a way to balance life’s heartaches through “Do Happy” activities that acknowledge the good in life. She could snuggle with her dogs, run, walk, dance, or help a friend or neighbor in need. “I never saw myself as strong; rather I felt that I was
making a choice… I was choosing to find ways to still do happy things despite what came my way,” she says. Warter’s philosophy that grew from day to day life raising Ryan, continued to blossom after marrying her second husband, Jeff. Both brought children to the union, and as a blended family, they created the Warter Strong Foundation, Inc. Formed in the Summer of 2018, the Warter Strong Foundation, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to help people take charge of their adversities through “Do Happy” activities and to provide volunteer and financial support to small organizations with similar goals. Governed by a board of directors and staffed with family and friends, the Foundation uses all donations to support these causes. (continued on page 16) Spring 2019

L-R: back row–Grant, Corynne, Gillian, Jake and Zach; front row–Jeff, Barbara, and Ryan The Foundation celebrates the lives of Oren and Ryan Warter through its work. Two organizations receiving support are LifeTown in Livingston, a community center devoted to children and adults with special needs, and the Gift of Life, a bone marrow registry. A full listing of partner organizations is listed on the Foundation’s website. Another goal of Warter Strong is to deliver the “Do Happy” message to schools. “Children get ‘Do Happy’ very quickly,” says Warter. “For kids, the idea of “being” or “choosing” or “feeling” happy can be very abstract. But “doing” is concrete. It is tangible and is easy to understand.”

Designing the Closet of Your Dreams By Deborah Schapiro
F
or over 25 years, the family firm Affordable Closets Plus has created functional and stylish storage solutions for homeand business owners alike. Senior Design Consultant Angel Martin spoke to Inside Livingston recently about specific services offered by her company.
What types of closets does ACP create? We create a wide range of closets—bathroom, linen, master bedroom walk-ins, kitchen pantries, and even laundry rooms, garages, and other home organizational spaces such as mudrooms. Many national home-building chains don’t offer closet upgrades, so a homeowner will often contact us to create and install additional shelves, rods or drawers. We customize all of our closets based on the client’s lifestyle or work needs.
How long does it take to create a custom closet? It depends on the size and type. The first thing I do is have the client fill out a detailed assessment of his or her wants and needs. I will then draw up plans based on the assessment and in-person conversations. A walk-in closet with crown molding and trim normally takes two days. Smaller projects such as a bathroom or kid’s closet can take one day or even less. It’s unusual for a closet to take longer than a week to complete.
Angel Martin
What are some unusual jobs Affordable Closets Plus has completed? A client in South Orange asked us to build a television, coffee and tea station in his third-floor closet, so that he wouldn’t have to go down to the kitchen as often. And in New York, we converted a three-car garage into a dressing room with a pneumatic (powered by air pressure) elevator that went up and down between the master bedroom and the closet.

Decorating Expertise for Your Spring Events By Jackie Schatell

t is no surprise that spring is a popular time to host events such as weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, sweet 16’s, corporate events, and milestone events. The snow is gone, temperatures are warmer and spring flowers are in bloom. It is also the time when country clubs re-open and party venues are in high demand. Orhan Oncul, who owns East Hanover-based Debbie’s Designs— a one-stop-shop industry leader in event planning, design and production for distinctive social events—says he loves planning spring events where he can use blooming branches such as Cherry Blossoms, and peonies in centerpieces and arches. “We help those planning parties save money and avoid the frustration of working with multiple vendors,” says Oncul. “Clients work directly with us on everything from decorations, furniture and florals to custom graphics, lighting and more.”
move around plants and flowers,” says Oncul. “We will also do outdoor photo pre-shoots as well as wedding after parties, comprising of acoustic guitars, marshmallow roasting, and a sprinkling of lights overhead.”
According to Oncul, this spring we will see themes based on pastel colors like pinks, peaches and yellows, with beautiful greeneries. Teen bar/bat mitzvah party lounges will be bursting with lights, blown up photos, logos and taglines. Oncul also says he expects to see a lot of outdoor parties.
“Spring is a beautiful time of year to create one-of-a-kind unforgettable moments,” says Oncul.
“When the weather allows, we will start taking parties outside where we can change up the scenery and backgrounds and

Sleep Soundly and Wake Refreshed Photos by Dan Epstein
T
empur-Pedic is the most highly recommended bed in America. It’s like no other mattress, because TEMPUR material is not typical memory foam. Over 25 years ago, their proprietary formula changed the way the world sleeps. TEMPUR material is composed of millions of moveable cells, designed to cushion and support your body during sleep. As it conforms to the body, TEMPUR material minimizes pressure points that keep you awake. It is sensitive to body temperature and weight, conforming to your body
contours, distributing weight and allowing you to fully relax – so you can sleep soundly and wake refreshed. TEMPUR material also dramatically reduces motion transfer so your sleep partner’s movement won’t disturb you.
TEMPUR experience by delivering our most pressure-relieving material ever — now with an all-new, ultra-breathable design. Exclusive, next-generation technology absorbs excess heat so you feel cooler while you fall asleep.
TEMPUR material is not the same as generic memory foam. Unlike generic foam, TEMPUR material springs back to its usual shape time after time – so it’s more like sleeping on a new mattress every night, and lasts for years. And since they research, design and manufacture TEMPUR material, it is proprietary. It can only be found in their products. TEMPUR customer satisfaction speaks for itself. Ninetyfive percent of customers love their mattresses, and the large majority of consumer reviews at tempurpedic.com are four or five stars.
Their stores provide a retail environment to showcase Tempur-Pedic products, with a unique showroom appearance. They offer Tempur-Pedic mattresses, adjustable bases, pillows and accessories – everything you need for a perfect night’s rest. The stores are modeled around a sales experience representative of a premium brand, where customers can try out products and obtain a thorough understanding of the features and benefits in a low-pressure, educational sales environment. This allows customers to make a purchasing decision based on what they feel is best suited to their individual needs, at a pace that they are comfortable with.

POWERHOUSE STUDIOS Provides Everything You Need for Your Special Event By Angela Sabarese
I
f you’re looking for a unique company that will provide everything you need for your upcoming party or special event–from entertainment to decorations–then look no further than Powerhouse Studios. Solely a traveling entertainment company at first, Powerhouse Studios settled down into three distinct venues in locations throughout New Jersey–although they still have the travel option available. Sam and Melanie Pellegrino, founders of Powerhouse Studios, take pride in their professionalism and knowledge of their business. “What really sets us apart is the uniqueness of our venues and our knowledge of the industry, having so many years under our belt,” says Sam. “We work with each individual family or group to make their experience both affordable and convenient.” Their 16-year-old Paramus location hosted a grand re-opening in March. The location was renamed The Hollywood Ballroom at Powerhouse Studio Paramus, and the space has been updated so that guests can completely customize their own theme. Party hosts can now choose from among the classic Hollywood theme, a nightclub atmosphere, a formal ballroom, or even a
sports arena. With 18,000 square feet, trendy updates, and the latest LED lighting and technology, guests can enjoy a beautifully decorated, all-inclusive experience. Sam and Melanie established the very first special event venue of this kind in New Jersey, Ultra Lounge in East Hanover. Since then, the couple has expanded their company to Randolph and Paramus, with each having a different theme. All of their venues are capable of hosting Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, sweet 16s, birthdays, corporate events, and more. Included with all events are comfortable lounge furniture, LED lighting, and decor, and guests even have the option to use the company’s own photographer or videographer. With full entertainment provided by the venue, hosts are able to sit back, relax, and enjoy their party.

ooking to give back to the community, Jessica Kim, co-owner of Grace Cleaners, started sewing charming hats that are made from using old t-shirts. The hats are distributed to patients of all ages at Overlook Medical Center in Summit who have lost their hair after undergoing cancer treatments. Jessica hopes to increase the distribution of her hats to include hospitals in all of Essex, Morris and surrounding areas. In order to do so, Jessica is accepting donations of cotton jersey t-shirts of any size and color. T-shirts with sequins, characters on them, etc. are encouraged as they make the hats even more unique. Donations should be dropped off at Grace Cleaners at 398 S. Livingston Avenue in Livingston. 973-535-1212.

hat sets D & J Moving apart from other companies is that this business is truly family owned and operated. Husband and wife team James and Danielle Ferrara are the backbone of the company and continue to work front and center. “You are our client—a real person, not a number. I personally speak with everyone,” says Danielle. D & J Moving, in business since 2000, offers residential and light commercial relocation, as well as packing and unpacking services.
pen since last October, Cotton & Jewels has become a unique, popular destination in town for fashionable, affordable clothing, fine fashion jewelry and accessories. Co-owners Vicki Halper and Shari Schenerman of Jolie Jewels NYC pride themselves on offering what Schenerman describes as “pieces that you’re not going to see in department stores.”
D & J Moving feature free, on-site, no obligation estimates. James can offer suggestions and packing tips to assist the client to be prepared and ready for moving day. D & J Moving understand how demanding schedules can be, that’s why they offer communication via text or email.
Merchandise is always up-to-the-minute. Schenerman personally creates some of the new and on trend jewelry, often turning vintage pieces into “something new and fresh.” She says that lucite, resin, and hoop earrings are in demand this Spring. Halper, who has a background in retail marketing, cites neon and camouflage as major spring clothing trends, with new arrivals pouring in daily.
Over 30 years of experience have allowed D & J Moving to make top suggestions for the best possible move: 1) Relay all information about the destination. 2) Be properly and completely packed. 3) Have a caregiver tend to children and pets outside of the home. And most importantly, Danielle says, make sure your mover, like D & J Moving, has a New Jersey movers’ license. “It’s your best protection.”
D&J Moving 103 Countryside Ln., Hackettstown | 908-684-8585 www.dandjmoving.com
Cotton & Jewels also offers a service not seen in department stores: a subscription service. Schenerman explains, “For a monthly fee, customers can rent up to four pieces of clothing items and/or lower priced jewelry pieces.”

COOKIE CUTTERS The Ultimate Hair Experience for Kids! By Christine S. Maxwell
I
s your child’s monthly haircut an ordeal you would rather not face? Change that experience into a positive one for the entire family at Cookie Cutters, Hair Cuts for Kids! Recently opened by Neetu Bhandari, a former creative fashion designer, and her husband Arvind, CEO and owner of Adira Medica LLC along with his partner Marty Jeiven, Cookie Cutters is a child’s paradise. Catering specifically to children from newborn to age 12, the hair salon offers not only premier haircuts by stylists who specialize in cutting children’s hair, but also a host of play activities designed to enhance your child’s haircut experience. A visual delight awaits upon entering the store. Designed in bold and bright colors from ceiling to floor, the store even has a large indoor play area. When it is the child’s turn for a haircut, he or she sits in a fantasy chair–a race car, truck, or airplane–for that personalized precision cut. Children may also watch their favorite shows and movies on their own televisions during the cut. Cookie Cutters caters to the ultimate family experience. Those accompanying a little one can have their hair cut at the same time. Stylists are available to cut mommy, daddy, and teen’s hair. Busy parents have a flexible schedule from which to choose– Cookie Cutters is open seven days a week! “I love kids, fashion, and colors,” states Neetu. “With my
background in fashion and design, Cookie Cutters provided the perfect opportunity. I am from Livingston and the town did not have a specialized kid salon that makes haircuts a fun experience for kids and stress-free for the parents. Establishing the business was a way for me to give back to the community. As a parent, I often wished that Livingston had this type of service for my son when he was growing up.” Affordable prices abound, along with loyalty savings. Parents can purchase specially discounted coupons at significant savings. Clients may buy a package deal of five discounted haircuts, receive special military, police, or fire discounts, and save money by booking the next appointment before leaving the salon. Wednesdays are family days with substantial savings when two or more children receive haircuts. Additionally, the salon works with children with special needs, setting aside particular times on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for consultations and to provide the children with a quality experience in haircuts, play, sights, and sounds. Cookie Cutters specializes in happy outcomes. Children leave with balloons, lollipops, smiles, and memories of fun and fantasy, eager to return for their next visit.

Customized Business and Personal Legal Advice By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

hether providing estate planning, corporate or transactional work, business succession planning, taxpayer representation, or any of the other legal services his firm offers, client/ attorney trust is key, says Steven Lehr, Esq., founding partner at West Caldwell’s Lehr Law. Many of the firm’s clients are private business owners, seeking assistance with contracts, Corporate/commercial matters, trust and estate matters and planning for their business’s future. Lehr works with individuals and entrepreneurs to create their customized estate, trust and business plans. He emphasizes a fullservice approach through the trust clients develop in working with him and his firm, allowing him to assist in many critical areas of law, even extending to personal injury matters, real estate and general litigation handled by the firm.
Each client is unique, and their matters are handled accordingly. For example, “Family businesses have a low percentage of success after the founder is gone,” Lehr says. “We help create a plan, whether it involves children who want to keep the business, sell it, or otherwise engage in mergers and acquisition activity” to benefit the family. At the other end of the spectrum, the firm often assists in setting up new businesses, ensuring they are on a firm, legal, commercial footing. “We can help every step of the way and at each generational level,” he says. In estate planning, Lehr encourages clients to be aware that their plan’s terms need to be reviewed and re-tailored periodically, reflecting life changes and changes in tax law. Planning is multi-generational and needs to be coordinated at all levels. The firm also maintains an office in Ft. Lauderdale, and is licensed to practice
Steven Lehr in New Jersey, New York, and Florida, benefitting “snowbird” clients and others with multiple residences. In each situation, Lehr says, his firm has the expertise to help.

ental innovation combines with decades of experience at Specialty Dental. Dr. Effie Zantopoulos Deegan says her focus is on personally crafted customization of the dental prostheseis she provides her patients with. She uses CAD CAM technology to individually design every crown and veneer herself, and Dr. Effie Zantopoulos Deegan personally designs every denture and implant prosthetic to ensure her patients’ full satisfaction. Notwithstanding current advanced technology, nothing can replace the expert eye and knowledge of a prosthodontist to maximize fit and comfort. “My specialty training is very focused on correct jaw alignment in which the bite is synchronized with jaw movements,” says Dr. Zantopoulos, taking TMJ and neuromuscular factors into consideration. She also enjoys teaching at Rutgers Dental School, in addition to her private practice. Her home office is a welcoming, calm environment where you truly feel like a friend. Dr. Zantopoulos, who, at the age of 6, decided to become a dentist, notes that good dentistry “marries the doctor to the artist” in creating teeth that look naturally beautiful as well as function perfectly. “We offer a very personalized experience,” she says.

Health Care Services for Older Adults in a Hotel-Like Setting
By Martta Kelly, photography by Dan Epstein
A
s people are living longer than ever before in history, their health and well-being is of utmost concern to them and their loved ones. Since 2004, CareOne at Livingston has successfully met the needs of more than 15,000 local older adults, offering everything from assisted living, respite care, longterm care, and post-hospitalization rehabilitation. “We have always been proactive in determining the needs of older adults in our community,” said Tim Hodges, chief strategy officer at CareOne at Livingston. The nursing facility, he added, recently underwent a massive renovation, which included the architectural modernization and the enhancement of security and comfort features. CareOne at Livingston Assisted Living, which shares the campus with CareOne at Livingston, is currently undergoing an 8-month renovation due to be completed in the fall of 2019. CareOne at Livingston Assisted Living, Hodges said, is designed for people who enjoy a level of independence but need some assistance with daily living, such as laundry, getting to doctors’ appointments, medication management, and food shopping. There is also a wide choice of entertainment and activities, which include outings to the Paper Mill Playhouse, bus trips to the Liberty Science Center or local museums, and even a cruise around Manhattan during the warmer months.
“We try and mix it up, offering something different every day,” Hodges said. “We have guest lecturers on a variety of topics, fitness groups, bingo, and other games. Our goal is to get everyone involved in doing things they like.” For those recovering from an illness or surgery—stroke or heart attack, pneumonia, or hip surgery—the nursing and rehabilitation facility offers 24-hour intensive nursing care, and on-site pharmacy. There is a 90% success rate of discharging patients back to their homes, according to Hodges, with 10% going on to long-term care at the facility. The rehabilitation facility also offers physical therapy for those who need it, as well as occupational therapy designed to help people return to daily activities as soon as possible. “Whether it is assisted living, post-surgical rehabilitation, or longterm care, CareOne provides a sense of security and access to the best medical care, all within a beautiful, hotel-like setting on a sprawling campus,” he said.
