elcome to the summer edition of Little Falls Magazine, which I am thrilled continues to be a seasonal staple in this town. As most have noticed, there is a lot happening around town, whether it be events, updates, facelifts, or infrastructure improvements. In an effort to best advise the residents of any happenings in town, I strongly urge everyone to visit www.lfnj.com and subscribe for the E-Blast under “Lets Connect” at the bottom of the webpage as well as sign up for Nixle and CodeRED notifications to receive regular updates. With respect to our Town Center and the recent concerns regarding the potential for parking issues in the future, the Township is in the process of preparing a final parking plan. At that time we will be seeking resident input to best serve the needs of the town. As summer begins, I am looking forward to scheduling my second Town Hall to ensure that the Council and I remain connected with the people we serve. This year, we will continue to make improvements such as installing air conditioning at our Recreation Center, as well as the addition of ceiling fans to keep our young athletes cool. The Township has also committed to installing new pickleball courts to support residents of all ages who remain physically active by providing another enjoyable sport. While there is much more to accomplish ahead, over the past two years Little Falls has become one of the best places to live, and I remain proud to call this town “home.”

Woodland Park Organization Supports Children and Families Facing Challenges

S

ince 2004, Family Support Organization of Passaic County (FSO-PC) has been providing education-based services for families with children experiencing substance abuse, emotional, behavioral, or developmental challenges. The non-profit facilitates a family-friendly environment focused on advocacy and support. States Marvin James Sawyer Jr., Executive Director of the Woodland Park organization, “Our goal is to help families keep their children in their homes and in their community. We want to support family members, youth, and the organizations which serve families and youth to ensure they have the support and services they need.” FSO-PC offers a unique array of advocacy programs to supply families with resources and support, including informative workshops, guest speakers, empowering events, and telephone support. Their Family Support Partners (FSP) work to: support families as any good friend would in a time of need; educate families on services available and the systems the youth are engaged in; and advocate on behalf of the family and youth’s desires and needs. Also offered is a youth program called Youth Partnership, a personal growth group for youth aged 13 to 21 who want to increase their knowledge of self and build leadership skills while having fun with a group of peers. Typically, families will spend between 9 and 18 months receiving individualized family support services offered by FSO-PC, depending on their needs. In addition, they provide support groups open to the public or group members, as well as onetime resources and referrals for families.

“Families walk away better empowered to be effective advocates on behalf of their child’s mental health, intellectual/ developmental disability and/or substance use needs. They increase their knowledge of the services needed and available and increase their ability to advocate for the best services possible for the best outcomes for their children. This can only happen effectively if the services being provided are effective and reflect the voice and values of the family,” says Sawyer.

“Our goal is to help families keep their children in their homes and in their community.” —MARVIN JAMES SAWYER JR. FSO-PC works intently in community development to gain support from the community and recruit volunteers and donors to better the quality of their programs. The organization relies on volunteers, fundraising events, and donations. To learn more about FSO-PC and volunteering or internship opportunities, contact Kathi Champagne, the Outreach Coordinator, through the main office.

These Agents Make Sure You’re Covered By Susan Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein

W

ith summer being a popular time to buy a home, knowing what to look for in a homeowner’s policy is imperative. Hanson & Ryan will ensure that you are adequately covered for any disaster that may occur. In business since 1876, the agency is now run by fourth generation family members. Kristin Ryan is the COO, her sister Carrie Ryan is the CEO and their brother Sean Ryan is a partner. With 35 agents who specialize in all types of insurance, they can find the right policy for you and your family. “We understand each individuals’ needs are different so we try to educate ourselves to find out as much as we can about you and your home,” says Kristin. For example, is your house in a flood zone; or for a condo, what exactly are you responsible for? If you don’t have the right liability limits, you can lose your home. Also, when life changes occur, such as having children or getting a dog, you need to think about revising your policy. Insurance policies can be very complicated to understand. “The agent is the translator and your advocate,” says Kristin. “Anytime during a claim, we are there to assist you through the entire process.”

Frank Van Leeuwen, Sean Ryan, Kristin Ryan Cifaldi, Terry Ryan, Carrie Ryan Nielsen & Al Zollo Hanson and Ryan also pride themselves on their involvement in the community and with philanthropy. For example, they have “Jeans Friday.” Every employee who donates $10 a month can wear jeans on Fridays and that money goes towards a different charity every year.

hen patients see Dr. Brandon Cruz, PT, DPT–who has duel Board Certifications in Orthopedic and Sports Rehabilitation and is currently participating in a Fellowship program in Orthopedic Manual Therapy, putting him in the top 1% of all practitioners in the country–they receive quality care with an emphasis on patient experience. Dr. Cruz’s goal is helping patients suffering from orthopedic- or sports-related injuries pursue their goals of reducing pain, optimizing fitness or reaching new goals. Pursue PT strives to get patients healthy as quickly as possible. Drawing upon his experience as an injured collegiate basketball player, as well as his advanced knowledge and manual skill set, Dr. Cruz creates more efficient rehab protocols.

“We aren’t a factory trying to get people in and out fast; rather, I take my time assessing and treating every patient as an individual,” says Cruz. Dr. Cruz also says using PT as the frontline of care for musculoskeletal pathologies helps cost and treatment time, but that most people wait for a physician’s script before seeking PT.

“Not only can people arrange for therapy on their own, without a script, most will do just as well, or better when opting for PT over surgery or medication,” he says.

And the term “wallcovering” itself has now expanded far beyond just wallpaper. Wallcovering, by contrast, adds texture and depth. Available in a wide variety of color palettes and patterns, as well as materials, it can augment any design style, from sleek contemporary, to geometrics, to traditional with a modern twist. “Very over-the-top designs, like those from Versace, can make any home look like a castle,” says Rossi. Many stunning decors use just one accent wall of wallcovering to enliven the entire room. “When used as a decorative

And to aid customers in their choice, Rossi Decorating Center also offers expert advice, decorating perspective, and a welcoming atmosphere to anyone looking to update and freshen their home’s interior look.

A whole range of price points means this option is available for everyone. “Today’s wallcoverings hit every price point, from affordable to statement,” Rossi says. At Tahara Jewelry by Michael Taher, this isn’t the case; rather, using CAD technology, they bring clients’ ideas to life in an interactive and fun way, making sure customers get exactly what they want. And it doesn’t stop there– utilizing a client’s original sketch or idea, the experienced team of specialists create a model allowing the client’s creativity to flourish, while bringing the ideas to reality.

While some businesses may say they offer custom designed pieces, most send out at least part of the design work to be completed off premises, with some even

Once the CAD design is completed by the experienced technicians, a photo-realistic rendering is submitted to the client for approval. ove over, grays and neutrals. Color is back in home decor, says Valerie Ruddy, owner of Verona’s Decorating Den Interiors. Clients are looking to “liven up their living spaces,” she says, after years of restrained, subtle shades. “We’re using indigos, greens, pops of pink.” And wallpaper in oversized floral patterns is also back. After so many years of careful neutrals, the trend is refreshing, Ruddy says. Of course, she notes, interior professionals see a room in a different way than most people. “We see it as a blank canvas to compose a design in, a design that requires balance,” she explains. Color, bold patterns and textures need to be balanced with calmer tones and negative space, giving the eye relief. Most of all, the design needs to be exactly what the homeowner wants to live and feel comfortable in.

Valerie Ruddy

Furniture is trending contemporary and mid-century modern. “Very clean lines, which helps to provide that balance to vibrant colors and patterns,” Ruddy says. She also often recommends re-upholstering, which can transform a beloved piece with good bones that’s become a bit tired. Here, performance fabrics have taken center stage, especially for active people and those with young children. In lighting, she sees contemporary design with a nod to the past. The right lighting works to “elevate the design,” she says. She’s also seeing many formal dining rooms being re-purposed as libraries or kids’ activity rooms. “People really want to use all their spaces, and by listening to their needs, we help them do that,” she says.

A School Built for Child Development & Learning MONARCH MONTESSORI FOCUSES ON THE WHOLE CHILD By Jessica Schiffenhaus, photos by Dan Epstein

I

ndividualized learning. Practical lessons. Independent decision making. Fun educational activities. Mutual respect. These are just some of the makings of a Montessori education. Developed by Maria Montessori in 1906, the Montessori method focuses on development at a child’s own pace, with learning aids and teachers guiding them along the way. Built from the ground up about eight years ago, Monarch Montessori is an authentic Montessori school. “Authentic means that the teachers are all trained and certified by approved programs through the American Montessori Society. It also means we have authentic Montessori materials and we abide by the principals and practices that Maria Montessori developed over 100 years ago,” said Liz Quigley, Director of Development. Not all schools with the Montessori label are ‘authentic.’ “The only way to ensure the school is aligned with true Montessori practice is having the credentials. It ensures the integrity of the program.” Monarch Montessori is for children from six weeks through third grade. Children are placed into mixed-age classrooms—a common thread for Montessori schools—which enables them to thrive at a pace that works best for them. For instance, the younger children will model the sophisticated behaviors of the older children, while the older ones will have more responsibilities and lead by example. Life skills are a large part of the Montessori curriculum. The classrooms are set up with multiple learning stations—equipped with specialized Montessori materials, such as stacking blocks, colored beads and other objects that invite activity. Children can choose the work they want to pursue, and the teachers will move from student to student helping them with their lessons. “Learning at their own pace means they’re not getting overwhelmed. Alternatively, they have the ability to really excel. You’d be surprised if you just let them go, how much they can excel. We have kids in this school reading at three years old,” said Ken Trabona, Monarch’s founder. “We develop the child, one child at a time. If we make a difference in one child’s life, it was all worth it.” Monarch also features a community relations director who monitors the children, and fosters community between child, teacher and parent to make sure the child is succeeding—or to work through any issues that might arise. The school is open from 7am to 6pm—which includes before and after care, if needed—and has rolling admission.

Personal Touch

aking good things happen for good people” has been the motto for High Quality Mortgage since it opened its doors in 2015. The brainchild of friends Matthew D. DiBrino and John V. Fornino has transcended into one of the area’s best residential mortgage brokers. With Fornino’s 18 years of experience in the industry paired with DiBrino’s 14 years of practicing law as a solo practitioner, together they make the process of getting a mortgage seamless. “We started our business with one common goal, and that was to treat each and every client like we would treat a family member,” Fornino said. “And sure enough, we have found that our clients quickly become our friends resulting in relationships that will last a lifetime.” Adds DiBrino, “The majority of our business

comes from referrals from past clients or professionals that have worked with. It really is the best compliment we can get.” When you hire High Quality Mortgage, you get the entire experience. “We are tireless in our efforts not only to make sure that our clients are well informed and educated on the home loan process, but also that we remain accessible to them at all times; even if that is on the weekend or between baths for my children. Whenever a client needs us, our guys and gals are there for them. Accessibility and transparency are what we preach,” Fornino stated. “We live in a very modern world, but everything is not meant to go with the times. The personal touch and accountability should not be removed from this process. We love to meet our clients face-to-face at any time that Summer 2019

is convenient to them, so that they feel informed and confident about the process,” said DiBrino. “We are the mom and pop shop for a profession that modern approach does not translate well. Certain things in life are meant to be done the old-school way and we are happy to approach it like that.” The team at High Quality Mortgage stays involved in the community—they recently donating a scoreboard to the Wayne PAL Little League. They look forward to continued involvement and donating to the Passaic Valley area.

Music Under the Summer Sky By Christine S. Maxwell

M

usic brings joy to summer ears. Experience the best that summer evenings have to offer with music under the sky at the Little Falls in the Park Concert Series. Now in its 11th season, the Concert Series is held every Thursday evening from 7–8:30pm from late June through August. Promising to entice the tastes of every music aficionado, the ten-week series provides a bounty of musical genres. “We have a different music genre every week–Motown, Classic Rock, Country, and Classical–you name it,” states Janice Alvarez, a founder and organizer of the successful series.

Free to the public, the Concert Series is sponsored by the Little Falls’ Alliance for a Better Community (ABC), an all-volunteer organization, whose year-round mission is to enhance the visual and cultural beauty of Little Falls. Through fundraisers, membership drives, donations, and grants, Little Falls ABC upholds its mission. Situated in Memorial Park, the Concert Series provides the ideal setting for family activities during the Concert. People bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the show on the large grassy field. The sounds of music provide the perfect backdrop for all of the evening’s activities.

Behind the Park’s Gazebo are activities for children. In addition to working with area artists, children are treated to face painting by a beloved community clown. Also, beginning at 5pm, residents may peruse the Marketplace. With more than a dozen vendors, attendees have ample choice of jewelry, candles, food selections, and other wares. Tables dot the landscape so that people arriving directly from work can enjoy an evening meal. A big attraction is the City Green Truck with its fresh offerings of farm-totable fruits and vegetables. Believing that the show must always go on, the Summer Series is held rain or shine. “What makes our Concert Series 32

Digital Dentistry Has Arrived By Janis Hashe

W

ho can forget the trays of “goop” used for years to take impressions of teeth for orthodontic work? At Little Falls’ Troy Orthodontics, goop is a thing of the past, as Dr. Tuhina Roy has recently added a stateof-the-art intra-oral scanner to her office’s equipment. These high-tech scanners, part of the shift to modern “digital dentistry,” are used to take images and videos of the inside of a patient’s mouth, allowing the orthodontist to accurately map even hard-to-reach areas. “The data from a scan improves how we move your teeth,” explains Dr. Roy. “The digital scan is then used to create clear aligners including Invisalign, braces, and retainers.” Another advantage of this technology is the range of treatment options and price points it makes possible–and all, Dr. Roy emphasizes, “at a local office with a trusted local professional who truly cares.”

Tips for Healthy Eating at Summertime BBQs and Picnics By Jackie Schatell, photo by Dan Epstein

D

uring the summertime, parties, picnics and barbeques fill the calendar each weekend. With all that food on the grill and picnic table, eating healthy can become tricky. Heather Shasa, MS, RD, retail registered dietitian at ShopRite of Little Falls, offers the following tips for maintaining healthy eating habits during the summer season.

What are some tips to avoid overeating? Don’t skip meals throughout the day until it is time for the BBQ. Skipping meals can lead to more intense feelings of hunger and may cause overindulgence. Staying hydrated throughout the day is also beneficial as sometimes we mistake thirst cues for hunger.

What foods should a person avoid? You can eat everything you love, just remember to keep portion sizes in check. Can’t resist a cheeseburger or plate of barbecued ribs? Opt for a slider-sized burger or a half-portion of ribs. Another tip: Break up your plate into sections, filling half with fruits and veggies and the other half with a healthy protein and salad featuring healthy grains like couscous, farro or brown rice.

What foods are healthy to eat? Choose Healthy Proteins. We know burgers and hot dogs are summertime classics, but why not try different proteins on your BBQ menu? Skinless chicken breast is a cinch to grill on skewers as kabobs with a quick marinade. Other healthy options include pork tenderloins, tuna or swordfish. Yum! Keep It Colorful. Filling your plate with foods that cover a range of colors is an easy way to ensure you are getting a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Grilled red peppers and juicy watermelon contain cancer-fighting nutrients, while green fruits and veggies like salad greens and cabbage (the key ingredient in coleslaw) contain anti-inflammatory nutrients that support a healthy heart. If you are looking for some unexpected grillable grub–think cauliflower, avocado, cucumbers, iceberg lettuce and figs. Lighten Up Your Beverages. Choose unsweetened iced teas, seltzer or water to lessen the amount of added sugar. Why not create a refreshing mocktail with a few simple ingredients? Mix unsweetened Kombucha with 100% mango orange juice and slices of mango and strawberry for a delicious summertime drink!

Heather Shasa, MS, RD

What is a good food item to make/bring? A salad made with black beans, fresh corn, diced avocado and cherry tomatoes is a healthy fat and fiber-rich side that can be made ahead of time and enjoyed with a sprinkle of olive oil and lime juice.

Little Falls Public School District One District…One Team…One Vision

The One School One Book Initiative

T

he Little Falls School District prides itself in cultivating a literacy rich environment. One of the best ways to maintain this type of learning atmosphere is to build a strong home school connection. The One School One Book Initiative, funded by the Little Falls Education Foundation, allows us to accomplish this task. The mission of One School One Book is to create a culture of literacy in each home. The program promotes giving a copy of the same book to each child in a grade level or school. Students and parents follow a schedule to finish the book and discussions are held in class to bridge this experience. Being able to discuss the same text and its elements allow for a common theme among educators, students, and families. This type of learning builds meaningful conversations and connections.

For the last two years the Little Falls Education Foundation has provided our Kindergarten students with copies of Mr. Poppers Penguins along with materials to carry out the One Book One School program. They have also supported the culminating activity of giving our Kindergarten students a hands-on assembly about penguins. Through Jenkinson’s Aquarium’s Out Reach Program, each year we have a penguin visit our school. The visit includes a presentation about penguins. In addition, the LFEF has given our grade one and two students the opportunity to participate in One School One Book with the Humphrey Series. Humphrey is a hamster whose sole mission is to teach children life lessons of responsibility, respect, and friendship. We end our program with adopting two live hamsters, one named Little and one named Falls. Students in grade one and two enter a writing contest to take these two animals home as their forever friend and pet!

HAIR TEXTURE: Wavy is the New Straight AN INTERVIEW WITH NIKKI MONTEFUSCOLI OF SHAG86 HAIR SALON By Angela Sabarese

G

one are the days when women used flat irons to make their hair as straight as possible. Within the past year, the latest hair trend, natural waves, has blown up on social media. Nikki Montefuscoli, a Master Designer at Shag86 hair salon located in Little Falls, shared all of the details about this explosive new hair trend.

What are the latest hair trends? People are starting to experiment more with their own natural texture. With all the new tools out there designed to achieve these looks that are often showcased on Instagram and Pinterest—like wands and different types of curling irons—wavy hair is exploding. All over social media, you are seeing curtain bangs with waves. Women with curly hair are leaning more toward learning how to enhance their natural curls. Layers are also huge right now.

Where did this trend originate? Victoria’s Secret was the trendsetter. They showed their models with the sexy, undone hair, and from there it exploded on social media. They also started the hair painting trend. This look is not achievable on 90% of clients without curling wands and irons. That’s what we rely on.

Nikki Montefuscoli

What is the best way to bring out a person’s natural texture? We rely on products a lot when we work with texture. About sixty percent of getting the looks you see on social media is through the use of products. Finding the right product for your hair, whether it’s thick, thin, coarse, or fine, is the key to achieving that look. They’re what give your hair the body, the hold, and the overall look. We just rolled out a new product line at the salon from R + Co. We are loving the fun line of textured products, which help us achieve the look we’re going for. They are also vegan, which our clients are loving. My favorite product right now is the dry shampoo, called Death Valley.

What are some other things women can do to achieve the beach wave look? Another popular trend is hair painting, which is another important way to get that messy, undone, roll-out-of-bed and sexy beach waves. Many clients get “baby lights,” which are tiny highlights that frame the face and enhance curls.

What haircut do clients typically want to enhance their waves? Many people want longer bobs with their waves, about collarbone length. No one is really holding onto length anymore. In the summer, don’t be afraid to chop off the old dead hair and start fresh with a lob! This style is definitely trending this summer.

How do you help your clients to continue maintaining their hair’s wavy style? Our job is to make sure that our clients have the proper tools to maintain their look. We teach them as we do their hair so that they feel comfortable with it when they go home.

“Although we have concentrated on Essex County real estate for 10 years, our scope is actually much bigger, with many transactions in neighboring counties,” says Sass. “In 2018, our agents did transactions in nearly 60 New Jersey municipalities spanning North and Central Jersey, including many in Passaic County. Therefore, it made sense to expand our operation with a second office in Little Falls—a town we know and love. It’s also exciting to be a part of the vibrant Little Falls business community, which has been undergoing so much positive change.” CENTURY 21 Cedarcrest’s agents work with property buyers and sellers throughout North Jersey on residential and commercial real estate transactions. They are among the region’s top producers and consistently receive high marks for their customer service. The brokerage has won “Best Realtor” in the annual Best of Essex Readers’ Choice Awards four years in a row (2015-2018) and in 2018, it won CENTURY 21’s CENTURION Office Award, Quality Service Pinnacle Award and coveted President’s Award, reflecting total office production and customer satisfaction scores in the region.

COLD LASER THERAPY

Relieve Pain, Restore Health Photos by Dan Epstein

C

old Laser Therapy is the most advanced healing technology to relieve pain, speed healing, decrease inflammation and regenerate body tissue. Professional sports teams use it on their athletes. The good news is you don’t have to be a professional athlete to reap the results, as NJ Spine & Joint in Cedar Grove is one of the few places to use the exact same technology. “Cold Laser is a regenerative treatment that is very effective on our patients,” says Dr. Glenn Sorrentino. “It works by emitting targeted beams of light energy, allowing deep transmission into the tissue. It’s completely safe and painless, has no side effects, and produces great results on many areas of the body.” Dr. Sorrentino uses Cold Laser as a key part of NJ Spine & Joint’s customized treatment programs, which include other effective treatments as well. “It’s important to have the right combination of treatments for the best results,” he explains. “Pain in one area is often the result of imbalance or weakness in another area. For example, knee pain is often caused by the hips being out of alignment, and shoulder pain almost always has a neck component.” In difficult cases, PRP Therapy, which is another regenerative treatment widely utilized in the sports world, may be used to repair tissue that has been damaged due to age, injury or wear-and-tear. It works by using a patient’s own blood,

Dr. Glenn Sorrentino which is drawn in the usual manner and then rotated in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma. That platelet-rich plasma, which is rich in proteins and growth factors, is injected by the staff medical doctor into the affected area to stimulate regeneration. NJ Spine & Joint offers free consultations by appointment. “It’s important for patients to understand what’s causing their pain and how we can help them,” says Dr. Sorrentino. “We have patients all the time who have had pain for years, and are amazed that their pain actually goes away with our treatment protocol.” NJ Spine & Joint is a multi-specialty wellness center that provides Cold Laser Therapy, Chiropractic, Physical Therapy, Medical Massage, PRP Therapy, Trigger Point Injections and Weight Loss Plans.

Cold Laser is good for pain in the neck, back, shoulder, arm, elbow, hip, leg, knee, ankle, heel and foot. The advanced technology helps many conditions, including headaches, tendonitis, sciatica, arthritis, numbness, tingling, spinal stenosis, disc herniation, muscle strain, muscle spasms and sports injuries.

Live in the Lap of Luxury in the Heart of Little Falls

alue Companies own and manage over 3200 apartment complexes. They are a full-service real estate development, investment, and management company that offers everything that’s necessary to run a successful community.

The Bromley at 44 Main in Little Falls is one of their premier communities. Built in 2017, the 34 units are the epitome of carefree, luxury living. Jack Linefsky, Vice President of Property Management for Value Companies, helps explain why people love living here.

What makes the apartments and building special? We pride ourselves on the beautiful living accommodations as well as the responsive on-site management staff who take care of whatever the residents may need. The apartments have open floorplans, large closets, hardwood floors, stone countertops and high-end stainless steel kitchen appliances, as well as washers and dryers. There are two different models available, featuring one or two bedrooms plus a den in the larger model.

In the building itself, there’s a fitness center and club room. With its high top tables and comfortable seating, the club room is the perfect place to hang out, use the free Wi-Fi or play a game of foosball. Residents can also hold catered parties with family and friends on special occasions or just for fun. For those with a sweet tooth, there’s even a bakery in the building. There are unique amenities and advantages of living in these apartments that people may not be able to find in a home. We also love and welcome dogs, although there are some restrictions on breeds and weight. Summer 2019

Do residents have access to an outdoor area? There’s a barbecue and picnic area right on the property with plenty of outdoor seating. A quick walk will take you to a park and scenic walkway that winds along the river. What makes the location desirable? Downtown Little Falls is a quaint community which features a variety of restaurants and stores all within walking distance. It’s also easy for commuters to catch a NJ transit bus. Value Companies look forward to Phase 2 of The Bromley at 44 Main apartments, which will provide additional units for rent. For more, go to www.44mainapts.com.

s your backyard an oasis for you? Craig Slaaen from Picture Perfect Landscapes thinks it should be. “Your backyard should be a welcomed respite from the world, a place that brings you calm and joy,” states Craig. A small quick change which might take only three or four days onsite can make a huge difference in the feeling and usability of a space.

“Your backyard should be a welcomed respite from the world, a place that brings you calm and joy…” —Craig Slaaen Craig knows that it is important to create an appropriate plan for each client, whether it be as simple as new plantings and flower beds or adding major features. With a degree in Ornamental Horticulture, Craig will tell you that choosing the right plantings is critical. He has the training and experience to guide you toward the very best choices—from screen plantings for privacy; foundation plantings to hide unsightly foundations; or a focal point planting to create a specific point of interest in the overall design of your property. it is often important to choose plantings that are deer-tolerant, and likewise, choices need to be made in regard to the amount of sun or shade the specific location receives. Picture Perfect Landscapes has an architect on staff to help plan all of your outdoor transformations. Designs may include a new patio, water features, a swimming pool, gazebo, pergola, outdoor grilling stations or even a fireplace with a TV! Renovations can include your entire property and be scheduled to take place over time and in stages according to scope and budget, sometimes over multiple seasons, or even years. Foundation plantings and a new walkway in front of a house can completely change the curb appeal and value of a home, while a patio and some greenery can create that mini oasis in a backyard where none previously existed. You might even find yourself deciding on a “staycation” after a quick change! If your outdoor space could use a transformation now is the best time to start the process.

From Darts to Custom Pool Tables THE GAME ROOM STORE HAS IT ALL—PLUS FUN! By Janis Hashe

I

n the 45 years since Fairfield’s The Game Room Store opened, retail has changed dramatically, secondgeneration owner Wayne Masters acknowledges. But his business, with its extensive array of games, from darts to backgammon to bocce ball, and furniture, from foosball, air hockey, shuffleboard and pool tables to bars and stools, has embraced change.

SPLASH INTO

One significant addition: custom recycled-wood furniture. Masters started with a wine rack made from wood pallets. “It sold that same day,” he says. He taught himself how to make dart cabinets, bars, pub tables—and the demand grew. “Tell us what you want, what kind of wood, and we’ll make it,” Masters says.

Bonus Rewards

He has also kept his games inventory fresh and unique, and created a friendly environment where customers can enjoy themselves as they try out the demo pool table or a new game. “We make the retail experience a fun experience,” he says.

SUMMER’S BOUNTY Cooked to Perfection By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

O

ne recent diner at Casa Arturo Bistro stated, “This is an excellent little gem of a restaurant with an intimate, yet vibrant atmosphere. Great food and even greater service.”

During the summer, dining thoughts turn to lighter, fresher eating. Diners will find the perfect menu options at Casa Arturo Bistro, where owner Arturo promises specials created with the fresh-est ingredients chosen with his expert eye. “We do a lot of grilling, and we toss summer fruits into our salads—it’s less-rich, lessheavy food,” he says. Fresh seafood becomes even more alluring in warm weather. One such dinner entrees they prepare is salmon grigilia–baked salmon with porto-bello mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, and fresh basil in white wine sauce. The produce used at the bistro is locally sourced from Bracco Farms, renowned for its commitment to “small-batch, naturally grown produce.” Arturo notes that summer means the return of fried zuc-chini blossoms, as well as the bistro’s signature stuffed artichokes with capers and pine nuts. Those who enjoy dining early to appreciate the long summer evenings will enjoy the “Early Bird” special, which includes an appetizer, such as the involtine di melanezane, thinly sliced

eggplant with ricotta, topped with mozzarella and marinara sauce; soup of the day or a house salad; an en-trée; dessert, and coffee or tea. Casa Arturo Bistro is available for afternoon parties of 30-40 guests, and Arturo will consult on the ideal menus. “It’s best to book reasonably far in advance,” he says, to ensure getting the date of choice. In addition to his Little Falls location, Arturo has a second restaurant in Bogota that has been open for a year.

Authentic

MEDITERRANEAN

Photos by Dan Epstein

C

alandra’s Mediterranean Grill’s chef Robert Caravaggio is one of those chefs who trained the “old school” way starting in the kitchens of his Nonna, his mom, and his aunt. After a twenty year stint in Las Vegas where he manned the kitchens in places like Sam’s Town, The Tropicana, and Treasure Island specializing in both Northern and Southern Italian cuisine, the need to be near family brought him back to New Jersey. Serendipity happened when he met the Calandra brothers and as he says, he and Anthony “just hit it off.” In the year and a half that Chef Caravaggio has been at the helm of the Mediterranean Grill, he has completely redone the menu in the restaurant, the bar, the catering service, and even the room service at the Hampton Inn & Suites where the restaurant is located. He has created new dishes and some that are wonderfully nostalgic and harkening back 100 years of Italian tradition. There are several restaurant selections worth noting: the Calandra Salad– a deconstructed Greek Salad with cucumber, feta cheese, kalamata olives, onion, grape tomatoes, avocado and dressed with season lemon vinaigrette; and the Watermelon Salad, which includes fresh mint, basil, and pan-seared scallops, seasoned with salt and pepper and extra virgin olive oil. Another salad worth tasting is Insalada Capri, which features sliced beefsteak tomatoes, burrata cheese, sliced prosciutto, roasted walnuts, fresh pesto and just the right touch of lemon vinaigrette.

Bronsino with curry infused couscous

CATERING FOR ALL OCCASIONS Chitarra Amatriciana is a pasta dish named for guitar strings which it resembles. The pasta is dressed with onions, fresh basil, roasted tomatoes, a touch of pomidori sauce, fresh parsley, fresh pecorino romano, and of course a touch of evoo. A real standout is the Chippino, a fisherman’s stew from the Liguria region, near Portofino. It’s a wonderful combination of calamari, salmon, mussels, clams, and shrimp with a spicy tomato and wine broth which is served with toasted crostini made of course from the amazing Calandra’s fresh baked bread.

Fish is big in Italian cuisine, so you’ll find Chef Caravaggio’s take on Bronzino that is served grilled, with curry-infused couscous, and roasted cauliflower with Italian bread crumbs and garnished with grape tomatoes, shallots, and lemon zest. Not to be missed for lamb lovers is a Mediterranean Rack of Lamb, made from Australian lamb which the chef says is bigger and more flavorful than popular New Zealand lamb. Served with sun-dried tomatoes, couscous, and a cucumber-based fresh Greek salad. Chef Caravaggio gives kudos and says: “I’m proud of what we do here. I have an amazing kitchen crew. I couldn’t do it without them.” He also notes that both servers and kitchen staff have been with the Grill for an average of 10 years. Using the finest ingredients he can procure as well as utilizing the baked goods from the renowned Calandra’s Bakery, which delivers twice daily, the Grill has found itself with rave reviews from Zagat, Diner’s Choice, Open Table, and Trip Advisor. A trip to this truly singular dining experience won’t disappoint. And as Chef Robert says: “It may be the most authentic Mediterranean restaurant you’ve ever visited.”

Diamond Minds

Some Thoughts on COURAGE

T

here is a deep core-based sense of courage and confidence that is not something we are born with. It comes from having tried and failed and risen to try again. It comes from experience, from having confronted one’s fears. It comes from the courage that is born in our hearts.

Courage and fear are inevitably intertwined. We become courageous Barry Farber when we have faith and we take action. When we believe strongly in what we’re doing, and we’re moving toward a goal that challenges all of our senses, we meet fear head-on.

“Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees the others.”

The problem with courage is one of perception. Most of us think that courage only applies to the big things: to saving someone’s life or to bravery in extreme circumstances. But if you struggle day to day to overcome adversities large and small (and we all do), you show a great amount of courage when you press on instead of just giving up. It’s the opposite of being discouraged. It’s looking inside yourself, being honest with yourself, and knowing that going after your goals and dreams takes courage and may be difficult. But in the end, you know deep down that choosing to follow your heart is the right thing to do.

– Aristotle, philosopher

The word courage comes from the Latin cuer, or heart. It means the quality of the spirit that enables one to face danger or difficulty instead of withdrawing from it. Courage does not mean the absence of fear. Those who are without fear are reckless and thoughtless, and often cause harm to themselves and others. Those who have courage know fear yet carry on despite it. They are able to look fear in the face, acknowledge it, and say, “I will not let you stop me.”

“Courage is being scared to death—and saddling up anyway.” – John Wayne, actor
