Letter from the Mayor
Little Falls Residents—I am happy to announce that I have recently proposed the 2020 budget to the Township Council, and I am proud to advise that the Little Falls portion of the budget will have no tax increase in 2020, with an increase in the surplus of over $800,000. The Council and I have been fiscally responsible resulting in a great, balanced budget for 2020. As I’ve stated in the past, the Council and I are proud to continue to provide incredible services to the residents of the municipality, without having to burden the tax payers with an increased cost to do so.
I am also proud to announce that the Recreation facilities in the Township will be undergoing a substantial improvement, both inside and out, with new AstroTurf being installed prior to the Fall sports season, as well as a new air conditioning system and new floors being installed at our Recreation Center. I want to remind our residents that our Recreation Center is not just for our children, and that there are countless programs being held for residents of all ages in our community. I urge you to check the upcoming activities at the Recreation Center, regardless of your age, and get involved! I’d love to see you there!
If there is ever anything that I can do for you, I encourage you to reach out to me at any time by phone at (973) 818-1790 or by email at jdamiano@lfnj.com.

Carefree Living for Those 55 and Better
By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein
For the growing 55-plus demographic age group who no longer want to be burdened with a mortgage, the amenities and conveniences of Notchwood Commons in Woodland Park may be a perfect fit. “There is literally nothing like Notchwood Commons, it is the only luxury apartment rental complex in the area catered to the 55 and better,” says Property Manager, Lauren Vanderbeck.
The newly built, 50-unit complex, offers both 1- and 2-bedroom floor plans. “All are one-floor living,” Lauren describes, “and all units have balconies for those relaxed moments spending time outdoors.” Each apartment features a gourmet kitchen with granite counters and stainless-steel appliances, a gas fireplace, and in-unit washer and dryer. All units also include jacuzzi whirlpool tubs.
Notchwood Commons has a fitness center; a residents’ lounge with free Wi-Fi, coffee bar and fireplace; and an outdoor patio, gazebo, and an impending bocce court. “We also do ‘Meet Your Neighbor’ events, which encourages residents to get to know each other.”
Lauren emphasizes a few other advantages—the underground assigned parking area; extra storage space on each floor, handy for those downsizing; and maintenance included with the lease.
The complex is close to shopping, restaurants and hospitals, and within a 45-minute drive of New York City.
“One of the main appeals of 55-plus living community is increased peace and tranquility,” states Lauren.

How to Prepare Your Home for Sale
By Jessica Schiffenhaus, photo by Dan Epstein
Getting ready to sell your home is a momentous occasion! Like anything that big in life, it is crucial to call on an expert to help you on your way. We sat down with Rob Van Der Wende, from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Van Der Wende Properties, who gave us the low-down on where to start, what to do, and who to call to kick off your home sale.
Some homeowners might be contemplating selling their house, but not sure how to take the next step to decide whether they are ready or not. What do you recommend people do if they’re in that situation?
Selling a home is a big decision and you shouldn’t rush into putting your home for sale until you are ready. Having said that, we are currently experiencing one of the best real estate markets that North Jersey has ever seen. Not only are housing prices strong, but buyers are also in a favorable position as they are able to take advantage of extremely low-interest rates. We are in a rare time when the market is pretty favorable for both the buyer and seller.
Once a homeowner is committed to selling, what do you think their very first step should be?
Make sure you find a Real Estate company and agent that will best represent your property and you. You need to be comfortable communicating with your agent as you could be speaking with them morning, noon, and night throughout the entire process.
It’s very important to find a realtor that you trust to add value to your home sale. What are some key questions to ask a potential realtor?
Make sure you find out how your real estate agent plans to market your home. There should not be a one size fits all approach to marketing real estate. Each home is unique and should be marketed accordingly. Ask the agent you are interviewing for previous marketing material they have used for other properties and how they would market yours differently.
When it comes to homebuying, first impressions matter. Which physical features should future sellers aim to improve in their homes to maximize selling potential?
It goes without saying that modern kitchens and bathrooms are at the top of home buyer priorities. However, it doesn’t mean you need to spend $75,000 to upgrade your home before putting it
on the market. Simple things go a long way like improving the curb appeal, a fresh coat of paint, and decluttering the home. You’d be surprised by the difference it makes when this is done to a home.
What is the most common mistake you see people make when getting ready to sell?
The most common mistake is overpricing a home. It will end up hurting your overall sales price when you overprice the home from the start.
What challenges can sellers anticipate in the process and how can a realtor help to alleviate them?
There are many steps to the home buying/selling process such as home inspections, appraisals, mortgage commitments, and finally the closing. There will be some bumps along the road, but a good real estate agent will absorb most of them for you and make your process as stress-free as possible. That’s why it’s so important to make sure you get the perfect agent that brings everything you want to the table.

Expertise and a Palette of Colors at Rossi Decorating Center
By Cynthia Burns, photo by Dan Epstein
Rossi Decorating Center is a full-service, independently owned store that sells paint, window treatments, carpets and wall coverings plus the tools and hardware needed to get the job done! Here, owner Bernard Rossi talks paint and decorating trends.
What is in vogue?
Gray and gray leaning to taupe continue to be top sellers. There is a resurgence of accenting one wall with a brighter paint color to make a room pop. Papering one wall as an accent, rather than the entire room, is also popular.
What advice do you give customers who are redecorating?
We offer a step-by-step guide to painting. Preparation is essential, especially if you’re covering nicotine stains, making a major color change like light over dark or changing the sheen. We urge customers to bring us something to work with, a pillow or a picture from a magazine, to help them with color selection.
You carry the full line of Benjamin Moore® paints. What makes it a good choice?
There are many options within the brand. We help customers pick what’s best for their project and budget. Most of Benjamin Moore’s® paints carry a Green Promise, meaning the paints are low-odor and lower in volatile organic compounds that emit gasses.
How knowledgeable is your staff?
Our professionals are trained specialists whose experience and advice will ensure the success of every project. Our customers are professional painters, general contractors, interior designers
and do-it-yourselfers. Their incentive to come to Rossi is to buy paint. Once here, they are inspired by the carpets, window treatments and wall coverings.

Woodland Park Bans Single-Use Plastic Bags
Beginning April 1 of this year, Woodland Park is banning single-use plastic bags. The ban will affect all retailers in the town, including grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies and liquor stores.
The ordinance applies to single-use bags provided at pointof-sale retail stores, including all single-use plastic bags, “biodegradable plastic” and “compostable plastic” bags, non-recyclable paper bags and all paper bags that do not include at least 40% post-consumer recycled content.
The goal of the ban is to reduce litter, protect the environment, and remove hard-to-recycle bags from the environment, preventing the contamination of waterways and ecosystems and eliminating the threat to wildlife.

Making Dreams Come True, One Milestone at a Time
By Cynthia Burns, photos by Dan Epstein
Celebrating the milestones in a child’s life is why Dina Tarabokija and Sandy Drazenovic have devoted themselves to a specialty boutique that caters to significant moments for newborns through age eight. Offering the ease of one-stop shopping, Once Upon A Time…A Special Occasions Boutique provides event invitations, party favors, and personalized gifts in addition to an array of clothing options.
With six children between them, the owners have had their share of milestones. “There’s the first outfit to come home from the hospital in, a baptism, first birthday and Holy Communion,” notes Tarabokija.
Drazenovic says Once Upon A Time caters to specialty wear for birthdays and flower girls and has one of the largest Christening and Communion departments in North Jersey. For boys they also carry an assortment of ring bearer suits and tuxedos. The pair take delight in providing exceptional products and customer service.
Tarabokija says her and Drazenovic’s personalities complement each other. “Sandy is simpler when it comes to approaching style, while I’m more glitzy.” The partners’ choice of product
lines reflects this. Whether an invitation, favor or a personalized gift, Drazenovic says, “We help customers stay within their budget.” The products are all conveniently displayed online.
The boutique has been in business for 13 years; and Tarabokija and Drazenovic took over three years ago. The two regularly attend trade shows to keep up-to-date on industry trends. “We view our business as a dream come to life and welcome the opportunity to make milestones a dream come true for clients,” attests Tarabokija.

HQM LOANS: Making Good Things Happen for Good People
By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein
At a small table equipped with two computers in a conference room, Matthew Dibrino, a lawyer, and John Fornino, a 20 years veteran in the mortgage industry, joined forces to establish HQM Loans in Fairfield. Since its humble beginnings in 2015, HQM has prospered not only financially but also has grown to a staff of 15 employees. Despite the phenomenal success, HQM has remained true to its original mission: to provide excellent service, transparency, and the best loan rates at no cost, with a sense of community towards all clients. Here, Matthew and John discuss options for first-time homebuyers.
Is it better to rent or to buy a property?
Matthew: Buying a home is a much better option. When you buy a home, you invest in yourself. Renting is just helping to put the landlord’s kids through college. Not only are you investing in yourself by owning a property, but you also acquire an asset that has equity, which can be used in the future.
How can first-time homeowners prepare to buy a home?
John: First, breathe and relax. When you deal with HQM, we make things easy for you, so you can enjoy the process. Obtain preapproval of a mortgage first. Gather all the necessary documents needed, such as tax returns, W-2 forms, pay stubs, and anything else to demonstrate your financial health. Accurate and complete documentation helps us to present the best loan options for our clients. Next, find a local realtor who will serve your best interest.
What are some of the best programs for eligible first-time homebuyers?
Matthew: With a thorough preapproval process, we look at each case individually. There is a multitude of programs for first-time homebuyers from fixed and adjustable-rate conventional loans to VA Loans to FHA Loans, and more, all designed to meet the needs of our clients. We find the best and the right loan for
each client while offering the lowest rate at zero cost.
How does Home Quality Mortgage provide superior service to its clients?
Matthew: We offer 24/7 accessibility. We go beyond the traditional 9am to 5pm service that banks and other institutions may offer. So much goes into the most important purchase of a client’s life, and we make sure that we assist them every step of the way.
John: Although we use the latest technology, we still use the Mom and Pop approach. We meet approximately 99% of our clients face to face whenever and wherever is necessary. Early morning, late night, at our office or in their homes, we are there for our clients 100%.

Improve Your Balance at Paragon Physical Therapy
By Cynthia Burns, photos by Dan Epstein
Paragon Physical Therapy strives to transform sick care to well care. Whether seeking relief from an injury or undergoing postsurgical rehabilitation, the therapists at Paragon Physical Therapy help clients to decrease pain, restore mobility and ensure independence.
Katherine Cwiklinski, PT, DPT, OCS and owner of Paragon Physical Therapy, says clients often do not realize they have a balance problem until they have a fall and get injured while performing simple daily tasks, such as reaching overhead, bending over, or getting into or out of a bath tub. “Having good balance is important because it helps to prevent falls and injuries that can result from them.”
At Paragon Physical Therapy, exercises to improve balance are incorporated into all physical therapy (PT) programs. Developing better balance centers on strengthening muscles as well as correcting faulty body mechanics. Cwiklinski explains that it is a process of retraining muscles, the vestibular system (inner ear) and the somatosensory

system, which is responsible for telling the brain where our bodies are in space. Balance training is beneficial for all ages, from young athletes to the elderly population. For instance, an injured high school athlete may start balance exercises on a flat surface, progressing to foam pads that offer an uneven surface. Older clients, especially those who use a cane or walker, go through their PT paces strapped into a safety harness secured to an overhead rail eliminating any fear of falling. The idea is to retrain the brain to be cognizant of balance while navigating any surface safely. Without the fear of falling, clients can rehab quicker than the traditional method where a therapist continuously holds a person to prevent them from falling. Training more independently will allow the patient’s brain to recognize when they are about to fall and, with the therapist’s help, learn how to prevent this from happening.
Cwiklinski notes that older patients in particular are committed to improving their balance. “Older people are more focused because they want to maintain their independence. They are driven by the fear of falling and a greater risk of sustaining a fracture.” Paragon Physical Therapy offers a comprehensive and individualized Balance Therapy program, which are recommended for people who have had several falls in a short amount of time. The program addresses balance and walking skills.
Paragon Physical Therapy is considered a premier practice for vestibular training, which includes the part of the inner ear that helps to control balance and is associated with disorders including dizziness, vertigo and BPPV, which stands for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. To underscore the attention having good balance deserves, Cwiklinski notes that it is common for people to have a loss of vestibular function beginning in their sixties. Given that, it is important to train the vestibular system in elderly patients in order to improve balance, so they can maintain independence during daily tasks and walking.
Paragon Physical Therapy also offers an orthopedic rehab program. They deal with ankle sprains, neck and lower back pain, all types of sport injuries, knee and hip replacements, auto accidents, neurological issues and many others. In addition to the more specialized treatments and equipment, they perform common therapies such as electrical stimulation and ultrasound for pain relief and muscle relaxation, stretching, and soft tissue/joint mobilizations.
Cwiklinski has owned Paragon Physical Therapy, in Little Falls for eight years. She describes it as innovative in its approach to physical therapy, with its main focus on achieving optimal health and wellness so that you can get back to living the life you enjoy.

Brighten Up Your Day!
HIGHLIGHTS & COLOR IN 2020
By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein
Tracy Fogel loves brightening up each client’s day. As a stylist at Shag 86 for six years, she specializes in creating bold, edgy hair colors as well as more natural looks. She loves working with more natural products that help her clients easily recreate and maintain their look, while keeping their hair healthy and vibrant. Below, Fogel discusses dazzling and delightful hair brightening techniques.
What are the advantages of getting highlights in your hair?
As a blonde, I love the dimensions and volume that highlights give my hair. Highlights help create brightness around the face and enhance a client’s features. Hair color has the ability to bring out the client’s eye color and brighten their complexion and skin tone.
What are the latest trends/colors of highlights?
I see more techniques that brighten up faces, enhance facial features, and give a healthy and brighter look. A bold “money piece” gives a thicker, brighter piece around the face and front hairline as opposed to the rest of the hair where there is a blended, more shadowy effect. Peeka-boo panels are another great way to try a bold new color without going too wild.
Painting and balayage are here to stay. It’s a great way to have a sun-kissed look all year round.
What maintenance is required to maintain beautiful highlights?
Highlights require a bit more maintenance than painting. Babylights and shadow roots are great ways to ensure long-lasting color with a subtle grow out process. Babylights are ultra-thin highlights, softer and more blended, giving a natural sun-lightened appearance. Shadow roots blend the natural hair color softly into a blonde color to create a balayaged look.
Lowlights are another method to add more dimensions and rich undertones to any hair color.
To maintain these beautiful looks, many clients refresh their color throughout the year and modify their color seasonally.
What is one little known fact about highlights that you would like readers to know?
Highlights give volume to hair and don’t necessarily have to be bright blonde. Often clients will pop in for Color FX, which is adding just a few highlights throughout the hair until it’s time for a full-color refresh.

Keeping Your Electrical Needs Current Where EXCEPTIONAL SMILES are the RULE
By Janis Hashe
Few household essentials are more vital than a reliable, upto-date electrical system. So, whether it’s correcting a few basic problems or replacing an older home’s knob-and-tube wiring, experience is key. Rich Fisk, owner of Watts-Up Electrical, has 20 years of experience in both residential and commercial electrical work. His professional team is licensed and bonded, and the company provides free estimates and proposals.
Fisk noted that an electrical upgrade can save a lot of headaches in the long run. “If the homeowner has an HVAC system, or is remodeling a kitchen or basement, an upgrade can be an excellent decision,” he says.
Watts-Up has added a new service: installing charging stations for electric cars. “These cars are becoming more and more popular, and they require daily charging, so this is a common request now,” Fisk says. The four Watts-Up trucks can also handle emergency calls. “We are known for our customer service and getting the job done right the first time,” states Fisk.

An impressive 99.2 percent of those reviewing Dr. Richard A. Zym’s dental practice would refer friends and family members to him. “We pride ourselves on ensuring everyone is happy with their experience,” says Dr. Zym. Increasing the patient’s comfort level and lessening the “dread factor” are key goals for him and his staff.
The full-service dental practice includes specialization in dental implants, which Dr. Zym notes have become much more common through advances in dental medicine. Both older patients, who may want an implant that can be anchored to a denture, and younger patients, who may be missing lateral incisors, can all benefit from the procedure.
The popular Invisalign braces are available through his practice, as well, and are a good choice for adults desiring minor alignment correction. Dr. Zym’s modern, comfortable office accepts most dental insurance plans, helping everyone in the family create “an exceptional smile.”

Engineering Track at Passaic Valley Regional High School Prepares Students for the Real World
By Jackie Schatell, photos by Dan Epstein
The students enrolled in the Engineering Program for Career and Technical Education at Passaic Valley Regional High School in Little Falls, NJ, are not just fulfilling high school graduation requirements, they are learning skills that will give them a leg up in college and the job market. Some are also earning up to six community college credits.
Students who go through the rigorous three-year, threecourse sequence by taking Principles of Engineering, CAD 1 and CAD 2, will sit for the Auto Cad by Auto Desk exam in the spring, which will provide them with a certification that will improve their chances of getting into college and succeeding there. It will also aid those choosing different routes after high

school, like internships, working while in college or just joining the workforce, by make them more marketable.
According to Supervisor of Career and Technical Education, Patricia Palmiere, “This program allows students to explore certain career areas while still in high school. It also lets them develop career readiness skills including collaboration, technical, and communication skills that are essential for today’s workplace.” Notes STEAM Supervisor Michael Carlucci, “It’s a different way for kids to gain the education that they need in order to apply to and do the work in schools of engineering.”
The kids are also currently preparing for the Northern NJ Robotics competition taking place at Passaic County
Community College on May 12 and 14. The team is a collaborative effort between the 39 students in the two Engineering classes, those in various clubs, students with an art focus, some of the CAD students and more. It is another way the school is bringing the real world into the classroom. The kids are learning to accept failure, use critical thinking, deal with different personalities, find their voice and discover new skills. Says Superintendent of Schools Dr. JoAnn Cardillo, “I’m thrilled they are participating–so this, win or lose, is a win for us.”
Regarding the Engineering track, Dr. JoAnn Cardillo says, “I feel that we are at the beginning of something that could be lifechanging for some kids’ futures. This is what high school should be about.”

Cold Laser Relieves Pain, Speeds Healing
Cold Laser Therapy is the most advanced nonsurgical technology to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and accelerate the healing process. Biomechanics expert Dr. Glenn Sorrentino integrates Cold Laser with other effective healing treatments, reaping very successful results for NJ Spine & Joint patients.
“We have many patients who had been in pain for a long time and tried many avenues without much success, and they are amazed that their pain actually goes away with our treatment methods,” says Dr. Sorrentino.
Cold Laser works by “emitting targeted beams of light energy, allowing deep transmission into the tissue,” he explains. “It’s safe, painless, has no side effects, and produces great results on many areas of the body.”
Those areas include the neck, back, shoulder, arm, elbow, hip, leg, knee, ankle, heel and foot. The cutting-edge technology helps many conditions, such as headaches, tendonitis, sciatica, arthritis, numbness, tingling, spinal stenosis, disc herniation, muscle strain, muscle spasms and sports injuries.
Many athletes seek treatment at NJ Spine & Joint to get back in the game faster with Cold Laser, which is widely used in professional sports. Another highly effective regenerative treatment administered at NJ Spine & Joint is PRP Therapy, also popular in the sports world.
“PRP is used in specific cases,” explains Dr. Sorrentino. “It works by using a patient’s own blood, which is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma. That platelet-rich plasma, which is rich in proteins and growth factors, is injected by our medical doctor into the affected area to repair the damaged tissue.”
NJ Spine & Joint offers free consultations by appointment. “It’s important for patients to understand what’s causing their pain and how we can help them,” says Dr. Sorrentino.
NJ Spine & Joint is a multi-specialty center providing Cold Laser Therapy, Physical Therapy, Chiropractic, Medical Massage, Sports Therapy, PRP Therapy, Joint Injections, Trigger Point Injections, Digital X-ray and Custom Orthotics.

A Roadmap to Good Health Habits
By Christine S. Maxwell, photos by Dan Epstein
“The mind is where a healthy and fit body begins,” states Thelis Negron, a master’s level marriage and family therapist with certifications in personal training, life coaching, and nutrition.
As the owner of MBX in Upper Montclair, Thelis has developed a highly effective, twelve-week roadmap, paving the path to long-term, successful diet and fitness results for each client. She incorporates all aspects of her extensive training, from nutrition to life coaching to strength training, in order to prepare the clients for a lifetime of good health habits.
First, she assesses each client’s health and eating patterns and coaches him/her in awareness of healthy eating and fitness. Clients discover and correct any beliefs and habits that may sabotage their goals. Next, participants learn proper nutrition habits with a six-week customized diet, consisting of whole foods that include the necessary nutrients for an energy-efficient and well-fueled body.
Lastly, Thelis creates a customized strength training program that corrects muscular imbalances and achieves optimal strength and efficiency throughout the body. “Building muscle is the only way to bring down body fat, properly, regulate metabolism, and burn calories at rest,” she states. MBX

Little Falls Trophy & Engraving Etches Accomplishments
By Janis Hashe
Dennis Messineo of Little Falls Trophy & Engraving has heard tales of late or uncompleted orders at other businesses. But he prides himself that his now-57-yearold community institution guarantees its work. “We won’t let you down,” he says. “I’ll work until midnight if necessary to get the job done.”
Trophies, plaques, and glass, crystal and acrylic awards are still the most popular orders, especially for local sports teams, retirements and commemorations. Performing and fine arts awards are another request, notes Messineo, and he has made plaques honoring graduating classes from the police academy as well. The experienced staff works with each customer to ensure an ideal result.
Clocks, desk sets and other options are also possibilities for engraving. Even bronze items are possible, with advance six weeks’ notice. Normal turnaround time is a week, says Messineo, or two-to-three weeks for large orders — but, in a pinch, he’ll burn the midnight oil.

Delicious Coffee & An Important Mission
Since opening this past November, Ethan and the Bean has been making a change in the lives of those with intellectual and developmental delays. Founder Pamela Donovan says her 20-year-old son, Ethan, is the main reason why the coffee shop exists in the first place. “Finding employment for people like Ethan, who has autism and epilepsy and is non-vocal, isn’t an easy task,” Donovan says.
Our name SE7TE refers to the seven original artisan pizza creations. Stop by to experience the wonderful flavors of wood fire pizza.
We also serve many Italian favorites like calzones, pannini, antipasta and fresh desserts.
She decided to take matters into her own hands by opening Ethan and the Bean. “This is a culmination of a dream to open a store with the mission of not only providing an inviting place to grab a cup of coffee in the morning or to meet up with friends after the morning rush, but to provide job training for valuable yet under recognized members of our community: young people with intellectual and/or developmental delays.”
Ethan and the Bean’s mission is to train and employ persons with intellectual or developmental delays, helping them to become active members of the community and changing the way people see those challenged by disabilities. Notes Pam, “We value and respect all who train with us and all who walk through our doors.”
Ethan and the Bean serves coffee and pastries fresh daily from 8am to 4pm Saturday through Thursday, with live music on Fridays from 6pm to 8pm. They proudly serve pastries–including baked scones, muffins and donuts–from Baked by Batelli and We Knead the Dough, with gluten free, dairy free and vegan options available. For a superb coffee experience, Java Love Roasting Co. is Ethan and the Bean’s exclusive roaster. Head over to their store to support their mission and relax with a hot cup of coffee!

Making Events Special at Calandra’s Mediterranean Grill
“Never say no. Always say yes” are the watchwords at the Mediterranean Grill which is located at the Hampton Inn Suites on Route 46 in Fairfield. That motto is so significant to the staff that customers who come from all over the tri-state area to host their special event celebrations, frequently comment about the graciousness of the staff to general manager, Tom Buczek.
Corporate dinners, birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, communions, graduations, and even weddings of up to 100 are handled with the utmost care in the elegant main dining room, which features huge palladium windows that open out to a beautiful patio garden, where occasionally wedding ceremonies are performed.
While the ambiance of the room, and the attentive, courteous service satisfy even the most demanding of clientele,
it is the food that is the star here. As at every Calandra’s establishments, only the freshest ingredients are used. Guests can expect homemade pasta, fresh bread and the award-winning pastries from the renowned Calandra’s Bakery.
The catering menu shines at the Mediterranean Grill. While Italian dishes such as the Fried Calamari, Penne Vodka, Chicken Marsala, and Beef Short Ribs continue to be perennial customer favorites, here they are prepared and served with the attention and creativity that Calandra’s is known for. A couple of truly standout items from the restaurant menu are also offered to catering clientele. For instance, the Tomato Cucumber Salad with cucumber, tomato, sea scallops, feta cheese, and served with a garlic, lemon, and olive oil dressing is a popular choice as is the Cold Antipasto, which features prosciutto, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, olives, and drizzled with a garlic and
lemon olive oil dressing. Seafood lovers are always thrilled with the Hot and Cold Antipasto, which includes clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari, and rice croquets topped with a fresh plum tomato sauce and served with toasted crostini made from Calandra’s Italian bread.
And, in addition to access of the onpremises hotel, there is always plenty of parking on site. However, it’s the Calandra reputation for gracious, courteous service and delicious food that brings people the Mediterranean Grill when they want to plan a special catered party…and nothing but the finest will do. Contact them for the next special event in your life.

MAGGIE’S TOWN TAVERN A HIT IN THE WAYNE COMMUNITY
Maggie’s Town Tavern in Wayne, an offshoot of its well-established sister location in Little Falls, is a labor of love. Owner Maggie Georgakopoulos, an interior designer by trade, completely transformed what was once China Paradise into a gorgeous, 5,000 square foot, industrial farmhouse restaurant, with steampunk accents and 16-foot-high, exposed ceilings.
With a 224-seat dining room and a barroom equipped with nine televisions and a fireplace, one can come for a cozy dining experience one night and meet friends to watch a game there the very next day.
Maggie has the restaurant business in her blood. She learned it by working beside her father, a restaurant owner. She has since passed down her passion to her children, Nicholas, Penelope and Aphrodite, and their spouses
Peter and Christie, who manage both establishments along with her.
She says that everything is made fresh, daily, from the dressings to the sauces and everything in between. While the burgers–which are made with Angus beef–are certainly real crowd pleasers, other favorites include starters like Street Tacos, Texmex Eggrolls, Tavern Chili Nachos, BBQ Baby Back Ribs and Wings.
“Everyone loves our wings,” she says. “I can always look around the restaurant and see them on most tables.”
Her favorite dish, aptly called Maggie’s Favorite, boasts penne pasta, sautéed baby shrimp, mushrooms, onions, peas and the restaurant’s signature vodka sauce. Maggie also recommends her fresh fish dishes, thin crust pizzas, salads, vegan options and steaks, which are all priced reasonably.
“We offer quality products at affordable price points,” she says. “You can go out to an expensive restaurant and order the exact same cut of meat as we serve here and pay double the price.”
At the stately bar, there are always 24 beers on tap, with at least three being old standbys, while the other 21 craft beers rotate daily.
Maggie’s Town Tavern, which as of February 2 has only been open for two years, is already an area favorite. It won the 2019 Wayne Magazine Award for Favorite Newcomer and Favorite Burgers.
“We feel very welcomed and embraced in Wayne,” says Maggie.

Steps for Growing Edible Herbs
Herbs can bring a blend of beauty and functionality to your home garden, and growing them can be one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to try your hand at gardening.
Choose your herbs
Basil, chives, oregano, parsley and thyme are notorious for being fuss-free and perfect for those who may be new to gardening or growing herbs.
You can also tailor your herb garden to your family’s favorite dishes. If they love pasta and pizza, try growing basil, oregano, thyme and garlic chives. For Mexican flavors, include cilantro, Mexican tarragon, epazote and lime basil. To complement Asian cooking, test your skills with lemon grass, Thai cinnamon basil or mint. You might want herbs to brew tea with such as mint, chamomile, lemon balm or verbena, or bergamot.
Select a site
Herbs are versatile plants that can be tucked into an existing planting area, grown in a dedicated plot or even planted in containers indoors by a sunny window. Most herbs are also attractive plants and can double as ornamentals mixed in with vegetables or flowers. Some, such as creeping thyme, rosemary and lavender, can even be used as ground covers or short hedges.
Regardless of where you plant your herbs, it’s important to provide the correct growing conditions to help ensure that they can thrive and produce intensely flavorful leaves. Most herbs grow best in full sun, but some can also tolerate light shade.
To prepare soil in a new planting area, remove sod if necessary and amend soil to create the ideal growing environment for your herbs. Planting on sloping ground or in pots or raised beds provides ideal drainage. Mixing organic material like compost into soil can help improve soil drainage, fertility and water retention.
