L

ittle Falls Residents - I am proud to announce, that for the first time in nearly two decades, Little Falls residents will be seeing a Tax Decrease in this upcoming tax year. The Council and I are proud to continue to provide incredible services to the municipality, without the residents bearing the burden of these costs. With winter approaching, I would like to remind residents to stay safe and warm, and have a wonderful holiday season. Remember, on the cold days of winter, stay warm at one of our warming stations, including the library or the rec center during the day. If there is ever anything that I can do for you, I encourage you to reach out to me at any time by phone at (973) 818-1790 or by email at jdamiano@lfnj.com. A Family Affair at Hanson & Ryan, Inc. By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein

H

anson & Ryan, Inc. in Totowa has always been a family affair. The company was originally established in 1876 as the Eugene H. Olden Agency in Paterson with the mission to secure quality insurance products for area residents. True to this mission for more than 140 years, the company has thrived as successive generations of the Hanson and Ryan families expanded the business. Now with 30 staff members, the company is a multiple-family enterprise with employees from five different families. Hanson & Ryan is the oldest privately-owned insurance agency in New Jersey. In 2018, sisters Carrie and Kristin Ryan assumed leadership of the business, making Hanson & Ryan one of the few female-led insurance agencies in the state. The company offers a full range of insurance products, including health, personal, and business insurance. While remaining steadfast to past business practices that have made the business successful, Hanson & Ryan constantly evolves as their procedures and products reflect 21st century models. A paperless office for more than a decade, they utilize the latest technology, including text messages and social media to communicate. They continually offer new insurance, such as cyber insurance and

Shag Shop Offers Exclusive Products in Fun Atmosphere

Sarah Ferraro

L

ocated in the loft of Shag86 Salon, the newly expanded Shag Shop is a women’s clothing and accessory boutique offering fabulous finds and one-of-a-kind items. Here, Sarah Ferraro discusses the shop and what inspired it.

What was your inspiration behind opening the store? We wanted to create a unique and exclusive shopping experience for customers within our 3-level salon.

What unique products are for sale? The shop sells VeganBio shoes that my father makes, which have been successful for many years in Europe. This summer was its first season in the states. The brand is focused on making products that are environmentally and animal friendly; we are a PETA approved vegan brand. We have very exclusive styling you can’t find anywhere, and only have few pieces of each style then the items are gone...so no one will have that very same style!

Along with the vegan brand, what else can customers find? Since the vegan brand is primarily a spring and summer product, we expanded the boutique so our customers can enjoy it all year round. We have jewelry, scarfs, hair accessories, and clothing.

How does the Shag Shop fit in with Shag86? Just like the salon, the shop has a head-to-toe fun atmosphere that I consider a true find.

Fall Time at the Farm!

If the Shoe Fits! By Christine S. Maxwell

D

r. Alan Shier, DPM, a podiatrist in Little Falls, maintains the belief that good foot care begins with picking the right shoe and making sure they fit correctly. Says Dr. Shier, “I believe that many foot complaints result from improperly fitted shoes.” Because of this, he has plenty of advice for patients when it comes shoe shopping. “I always remind patients that a shoe with laces will usually be the best choice for comfort.” He also reminds them not to shop by size, as there is no standard in the shoe industry.

“In a tie shoe, whether it is dress, casual or sneakers, there should be adequate room in the toe area,” he notes. He suggests choosing shoes that are made of leather for breathability. He also notes that the price of the shoe has nothing to do with the fit. Dr. Shier not only speaks from professional experience as a podiatrist, but also reminds his patients that his parents owned Shier Shoes, a family run shoe store in Wayne.

Five Years of Offering Unique Gifts By Susan Baldani

T

his September, Verona’s Main Street Cottage marked five years of providing unique gifts to their valued customers. Owner Donna Ciccolini celebrated the gift shop’s fifth anniversary with discounts and giveaways for everyone. The store carries a variety of merchandise including signs, wine accessories, hostess gifts, and wedding and baby gifts. Since many of the items are made by the Amish, Donna and her assistant, Lynn Serra, go to Pennsylvania four to five times a year to shop. They find other unique items at gift shows. Her biggest sellers are home-made candles. “Most of the fall candles are sold out by the end of September,” said Donna. Customers can also order on Main Street Cottage’s Facebook site; they ship throughout the U.S. and even offer gift-wrapping. Donna’s father, Lee Ambrose, is the official gift wrapper from the day after Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. The service is warm and personal. “When a customer comes in, I want them to leave feeling like they’ve made a friend,” said Donna.

THE GODDARD SCHOOL

Where Children Learn in a Safe and Caring Environment By Susan Baldani

T

he Goddard School has been teaching children for nearly 30 years. Amy Emann-Evanchik, the on-site owner of the Fairfield location, is proud to be celebrating their five-year anniversary this October. The accredited school is focused on early childhood education, and the children range in age from 6 weeks to 5 years, with summer programs for children up to 8. Curriculum is geared toward play-based learning, which Amy stated has been proven to be the best way for children to learn.

“We don’t have a boxed curriculum. Children do not fit into a box, so we don’t want to teach them from a box.” —Amy Emann-Evanchik

They also have a proprietary program called F.L.E.X., which focuses on children as a whole, encompassing their social, creative, physical, emotional and academic development. There is an Education Advisory Board consisting of researchers, educators, and experts in early childhood development, who develop and put these programs into place. Their Quality Assurance program has requirements above state standards and ensures that children have a safe and healthy environment in which to learn.

Amy Emann-Evanchik Their teachers, who all have a degree in child related fields, create lesson plans tailored to the individual children in their classrooms. There is a curriculum room full of resources that can be used to teach everything from sign language, Spanish, music, and art history to math and character development. “The teachers can pull from these and are able to create the magic,” said Amy. The Goddard School gives teachers developmental guidelines and NJ state goals so they can structure their lessons around them, while allowing them to expand on teachable moments. “We don’t have a boxed curriculum,” said Amy. “Children do not fit into a box, so we don’t want to teach them from a box.” They always focus on implementing the latest learning developments. One of these is called STEAM – science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. “Goddard has a mobile STEAM lab that visits all the preschool and pre-k classes. The children have hands-on activities to make sure that when they leave here, they are more than prepared for their next steps in private or public education,” said Amy.

Enhancing the Financial Security of Every Client FR O M H O L D- UP S T O CY B E R -AT TA CK S By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein

T

he Hahn Insurance Agency has protected its clients from perils for 85 years. Established in 1933 by Charles F. Hahn to provide “hold up” insurance to butchers in Newark, the Agency has prospered through the leadership of three successive Hahn family generations. Charles F. Hahn was succeeded by his son, Gordon M. Hahn, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The Agency is now owned and managed by the founder’s grandson, Chuck Hahn. From grandfather to grandson, the Agency has offered quality insurance coverage to its clients. With a knowledgeable staff of eight employees, six of whom have been with the Agency for more than ten years, they have an impressive list of insurance carriers and options to provide clients with the right coverages. Further, the Agency boasts 24/7 availability through technology and an out-ofstate employee to give additional personalized assistance in the event of local inclement weather or power outages. In addition to an array of business insurance products for “Main Street” stores to advanced technology companies, the Agency offers individual coverages. Clients may select traditional policies such as automobile and homeowners, as well as from a range of coverages providing protection for valuable articles, travel accident, weddings, boats, and motorcycles. The Agency now offers new policies for individuals protecting them from cyber-attacks on their personal computers.

Changing weather conditions have also created the need for flood insurance in areas where flooding does not traditionally occur, as evidenced by the recent flooding in Little Falls in August. Hahn recommends that flood insurance be purchased separately even if people do not live in traditional flood zones. Company agents can assist residents in selecting the appropriate flood policy for their needs. As it has since its inception, Hahn sees his organization evolving. The Agency provides new insurance coverages emerging from ever-changing economic and societal exposures. States Hahn, “Moving forward, our mission is to build on the success of three generations of family ownership by focusing on the client: offering the newest insurance products, adopting the latest technologies for simple, efficient and satisfying service experiences, and acting as a consultant to educate and solve problems as opposed to just selling a policy.”

Little Falls Public School District One District…One Team…One Vision

Wonderful Things Are Being Achieved by the Little Falls Township Public Schools and the Little Falls Police Department The collaboration between the Little Falls School District and the Little Falls Police Department is second to none. We work together daily to ensure the safest environment for the students of Little Falls. Our proactive approach allows the members of the police department to be visible in all three schools. This fosters an environment where students can feel comfortable with the police. Our men and women in blue can be seen on our playgrounds and in our classrooms interacting with our students. The wonderful things that we have been able to achieve together are: • LFPD are present daily at drop-off and pickup at all three schools which assists with traffic flow as well as providing proactive safety measures. • Together, with the LFPD, we engage in monthly security drills to be certain that staff and students are prepared for any type of emergency that may impact our buildings. • Our new camera system, which was installed this summer, is interfaced with the LFPD, allowing the police department to have viewing access to all of our security cameras.

• LFPD substations have been set up in each school so that police officers are in and out of each building throughout the day from 7:00am–11:00pm. We look forward to continuing our collaborative relationship with the Little Falls Police Department in order to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students and staff.

“Unity is Strength… When there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.” – Mattie Stepanek

Now over a decade later, her business, Main Street Antiques, is going strong. “Not everyone gets to earn a living doing a hobby,” says Santucci with a laugh. “I’m living the dream!” The store, which not only sells antiques, also sells collectibles, high-end handbags, jewelry, costume jewelry, quality glass and porcelain, sterling, silver and gold flatware, lamps, furniture, curated clothing and more. New items hit the floor daily, so Santucci advises frequent visits to the store for customers seeking specific items. She says she will also search for items that her clients seek. Santucci, who loves the buying aspect of her career, spends a lot of time perusing estate sales, and going to auctions, seeking mid- to high-end items for her store. She also travels up to an hour and a half away to visit people’s homes to make purchases and often acquires merchandise from people who bring treasures to the store for evaluation. “While we don’t do full-blown ‘Antiques’ Roadshow’ events, I

Debbie Santucci live my own version of the show daily because every day, people bring in items for me to evaluate, price and purchase,” says Santucci. Aside from selling antiques and collectibles, the store also sells engagement rings, procures diamonds, and resizes jewelry. Main Street Antiques is open Tuesday – Friday, from 11 am to 5:30 pm and on weekends from 11 am to 5 pm.

Keratin Treatments: A Recipe for Smooth, Soft and Shiny Hair By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein

D

o you want an amazing recipe that will give you smooth, soft, and shiny hair? Gina Torres, a prestigious stylist at Shag 86 in Little Falls, has that recipe. She specializes in Keratin treatments that deliver the ingredients for lovely locks. Torres discusses this magical formula below.

What is a Keratin treatment for hair? Keratin treatments are smoothing treatments that reduce frizz, curl, and makes the hair smoother and look healthier. It also repairs damage and breakage.

Are there different types of Keratin treatments? Yes. There are three types of Keratin treatments I offer. There is the Natural Keratin smoothing treatment which lasts for approximately five months, the Express treatment that lasts for approximately six weeks and the Blonde Keratin treatment, which I offer upon request, that lasts up to approximately five months.

What steps are involved in Keratin treatments? For the Natural and Express treatments, I wash the clients’ hair twice with a clarifying shampoo, but only once for the Blonde treatment. Hair is then dried from 80–100 percent depending on which treatment they are getting done. Next the treatment begins. For the Express Keratin, there is no processing time; the hair is blow dried immediately. For the Natural and Blonde treatments, the Keratin is left on the hair for 30 minutes before blow drying. As a final step for all treatments, a flat iron is used to seal Keratin into the hair cuticles. I discuss with the clients and give them written instructions as to how to maintain the beautiful hair that the Keratin treatments produce. Shag86 carries recommended Keratin products for you to use.

Keratin treatments can be completed on the same day. The color is done first and then the Keratin treatment. It’s a lengthy process, but the color comes out gorgeous and stays.

What are some little-known facts about Keratin treatments?

Shag86

I endorse the Keratin products because they are not tested on animals. Clients also don’t realize that hair color and

BEHIND THE BRAND:

The New Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Van Der Wende Properties By Jessica Schiffenhaus, photos by Dan Epstein

V

an Der Wende Properties’ new affiliation with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices is a big deal! We sat down with Rob Van Der Wende to discuss the ins and outs of this decision and how it ultimately affects clients.

What made you decide to start searching for a new brand affiliation? When we assess our brand affiliation, we wanted to make sure our clients have the most powerful name behind them when we’re representing them, and that our agents have the best possible brand to represent, the best tools, systems and brand name.

So given those criteria, why do you feel like Berkshire Hathaway is the perfect fit? Berkshire Hathaway is the company that Warren Buffet has built. It has consistently been on the list of most admired companies in the world. Everyone’s going to benefit from that. Our clients will benefit from the extremely strong brand name—one that represents trust and confidence. And our agents will as well—they’re going to be able to confidently represent properties with that name behind them.

How did you go about choosing Berkshire Hathaway? What was your method? We looked at every possible company in the market and dug deep to see which company would be the best fit—which would give our clients the best representation, and benefit our agents the most. We wanted to check off these boxes, and Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices just flat out jumped off of the page. There was no close second—they were so far ahead of everyone else. It was such a big difference that we finally made the decision to make the switch after being with the same brand for 40 years.

Wow, that’s impressive. What are you looking forward to with this new brand? We’re really excited that Berkshire Hathaway offers our agents the ability to consistently represent properties across all price segments. We’re also excited for our agents to better serve the higher end of the market. They’ll be able to separate themselves as being trusted advisors on real estate needs.

How do you think clients will react to this change? The response from the public and the real estate community has been overwhelmingly supportive of the new brand. The agents and our past clients are super excited. As soon as you mention the Berkshire Hathaway name, there’s a built-in trust factor and prestige. This announcement has been really well supported.

Bizub-Parker Funeral Home Provides Peace of Mind By Deborah Schapiro

N

ot many people like to think about death, either their own or that of a loved one. When it becomes necessary to do so, however, Bizub-Parker Funeral Home offers compassion and expertise based on almost a century of experience. Toby Bizub, the third-generation owner/manager, says that a large part of his business is pre-arranging: “Clients want the peace of mind knowing exactly how their service will be handled.” Bizub-Parker is non-denominational; Bizub says, “We can handle any type of religious service.” The home offers a variety of options, ranging from traditional burial to entombment to cremation. Bizub and his staff also suggest and assist with personalizing the funeral service, such as displaying photographs or artwork, or including meaningful poetry or music. Explaining the success of his business, Bizub says, “We pride ourselves on going above and beyond basic professionalism.”

Your Little One’s “Second Home”

ittle Falls families will find that Kiddie Academy in West Caldwell is not only a short drive away, but has made quality education conveniently accessible for infants through kindergartners. “We are an early childhood education center, not a daycare,” emphasizes owner Jill Buckley-Jones.

here is reassurance in the tried and true. West Essex Building Supply Co., an 80-year-old fourth-generation family business, recommends windows manufactured by Andersen, a 100-year plus company. “Andersen makes a woodframe window that is maintenance free,” says Chip Schneider, president of West Essex. “The glass is energy efficient. The Low-E glass reflects sunlight away in the summer and keeps heat in during winter months.” Older homes have windows with single pane glass and a storm window, which are not energy efficient. Home owners are encouraged to consider replacing old windows even if there is no wood or pane damage. Schneider notes, “The aesthetics of an Andersen window blends well with the architecturally unique homes in the area.”

L

Kiddie Academy offers infant and toddler care, and curriculums designed for early preschool, preschool, pre-K, and kindergarten. Curriculums are updated every year, with a focus on learning through play. Other offerings include a Summer Camp program for children up through age 10.

Schneider invites customers to visit the showroom to view the selection of Andersen windows and patio doors and to speak to a specialist to choose the right product.

Open from 6:30am through 6:30pm, Kiddie Academy gives parents access to check on their children through its classroom webcams, and receive daily updates electronically using “Academy Link.” The Academy serves breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack. Says Buckley-Jones, “We feel like a community. This is a second home for our kids.” A video tour of Kiddie Academy is available on its website.

Discover What Your Neighbors Have Already Discovered Purchase New and Gently-Used Items with Proceeds Benefitting the Paterson Habitat for Humanity By Jackie Schatell

ow often can you purchase something you really need or want, at up to 80 percent off the retail price, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefitting those in need? At the Habitat for Humanity ReStore – this is exactly what happens. The Wayne ReStore is a retail thrift store that accepts donations of new and gentlyused furniture, appliances and building materials from businesses and individuals. These items are then sold to the public in the ReStore in Wayne. Last year the ReStore, which also sells a full line of new kitchen cabinets, generated over $1 million in sales.

According to Walt FitzPatrick, the director of the ReStore, “It’s what we call a winwin-win for all. The donors receive a tax write-off; the buyers save up to 80 percent off the original price; and the ReStore keeps roughly 600 tons of waste out of the landfill.”

“We encourage buyers to keep their eyes on Facebook and to stop by often because our inventory changes every day,” said FitzPatrick, who added, “Prices are nonnegotiable but the price of an item goes down 20 percent every 30 days if the item remains on the sales floor…but most items sell in the first two weeks.”

Donors are asked to review the website for information on the types of items being accepted, and to “self-schedule” a donation pickup. Buyers are encouraged to peruse the Facebook page for a sampling of what is usually available in store. New items are added to the Facebook page daily.

The ReStore, which has been open for six years, is located at 415 Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne, NJ. Doors are open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm and Sunday, noon to 5pm. W

hat is reflexology… glad you asked! At A Tranquil Journey in Little Falls, the entire body is treated with a reflexology treatment. What you might not realize is that all nerve endings within the body end in your hands and feet. Using the Hoyt Method, A Tranquil Journey emphasizes not only helping patients relax and relieve stress, but also reaching a full state of complete well-being. They do this by using a gentle touch on your hands, feet, neck, upper back, shoulders and facial areas, helping different areas within the body: the back, sciatica, hip, migraines, diabetes, menopause, digestion, and so much more. A Tranquil Journey aims to truly try to help each patient! To do this, it does at times take more than one treatment–sometimes patients have to come several times. They try to make this more affordable by offering special financial packages. They also make sure patients understand what reflexology is all about. They not only treat the problem areas but also show patients how reflexology helps, showing the pertinent acupressure points and how to conquer pain. Their main goal is to see each patient feel better! To achieve this, they are offering a pre-holiday season special. Learn more on page 10.

Celebrate Fall

AT FAIRFIELD FARMS By Susan Baldani

F

airfield Farms is gearing up for fall fun. Families come from all over the state, as well as New York City and Staten Island, to enjoy a variety of seasonal events.

There is a corn maze, hay rides that circle their 20-acre property, a rope maze, and a huge slide that children and adults can slide down after climbing a tower of hay bales. In addition, a natural obstacle course is set up in one of the greenhouses. Goats, chickens, sheep and ducks will also be on view. “We have a cute little store here too,” said Joyce Francevilla, who runs the farm along with her husband, Salvatore. “We sell mums and decorative fall items.” They also offer birthday parties and school field trips in the fall. One of the highlights is teaching children how pumpkins grow, which is accompanied by a scarecrow puppet show.

Property Buyers and Sellers are On Board for the Opportunities Transit Village Provides By Cynthia Burns, photos by Dan Epstein

R

ay Damiano and his brother, Warren, coowners of Premier Properties-The Damiano Group, embrace a motto: “We Write Happy Beginnings.” They are pleased that Little Falls is at the happy beginning of a rejuvenation, the result of a Transit Village designation. Ray explains that through rezoning and incentives spearheaded by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), Little Falls is committed to revitalizing and redeveloping the area around its transit hub. The result will be a mixeduse neighborhood with a strong residential component. The goal is to increase housing opportunities within walking distance of shops, jobs, offices and restaurants. The municipality is awaiting final approval from the NJDOT to proceed. Ray envisions “a combination of retail space on the ground level and residential above. It will extend from the center of town toward Route 23.”

Warren Damiano

Ray Damiano

“A better tax rate benefits everyone in the community. It makes it easier for sellers to sell their property and there’s less cost to the municipality.”

The Transit Village designation benefits all residents by making Little Falls eligible for priority funding and technical assistance from state agencies and eligibility for NJDOT grants. Rejuvenation and beautification improve the financial opportunities for buyers and sellers in town. “For buyers,” says Ray, “there’s a greater inventory of housing that offers an opportunity for them to consider housing options that weren’t available before.” And, for sellers, it is anticipated there will be more opportunities for them to list their properties at an additional value.

—Warren Damiano, co-owner, Premier Properties-The Damiano Group Warren underscores the impact the commercial buildings will have on tax ratables that provide tax income for local government. “A better tax rate benefits everyone in the community. It makes it easier for sellers to sell their property and there’s less cost to the municipality.”

Still, there are perks for long-term residents who will be able to walk to more stores and have a greater variety of them.

Ray believes that the new housing will be one- or two-bedroom condominiums or apartments. This will attract a younger population drawn by an easier commute.

Customized Business and Personal Legal Advice at Lehr Law By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

W

hether providing estate planning, corporate or transactional work, business succession planning, taxpayer representation, or any of the other legal services his firm offers, client/ attorney trust is key, says Steven Lehr, Esq., founding partner at West Caldwell’s Lehr Law. Many of the firm’s clients are private business owners, seeking assistance with contracts, Corporate/commercial matters, trust and estate matters and planning for their business’s future. Lehr works with individuals and entrepreneurs to create their customized estate, trust and business plans. He emphasizes a fullservice approach through the trust clients develop in working with him and his firm, allowing him to assist in many critical areas of law, even extending to personal injury matters, real estate and general litigation handled by the firm.

Each client is unique, and their matters are handled accordingly. For example, “Family businesses have a low percentage of success after the founder is gone,” Lehr says. “We help create a plan, whether it involves children who want to keep the business, sell it, or otherwise engage in mergers and acquisition activity” to benefit the family. At the other end of the spectrum, the firm often assists in setting up new businesses, ensuring they are on a firm, legal, commercial footing. “We can help every step of the way and at each generational level,” he says. In estate planning, Lehr encourages clients to be aware that their plan’s terms need to be reviewed and re-tailored periodically, reflecting life changes and changes in tax law. Planning is multi-generational and needs to be coordinated at all levels. The firm also maintains an office in Ft. Lauderdale, and is licensed to practice

Steven Lehr in New Jersey, New York, and Florida, benefitting “snowbird” clients and others with multiple residences. In each situation, Lehr says, his firm has the expertise to help.

Color Trends for Fall and Beyond By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein

W

ith autumn finally here, it is not only leaves that change color. Clothing and even home décor change as well. Little Falls Magazine recently spoke with Bernard Rossi, owner of Rossi Decorating Center, about his thoughts on color in general and a specific interior design trend for 2019.

Why has the most popular interior paint color for the past decade been gray? Paint colors follow decor trends. For the past 10 years, furniture, bedding, and even accessories have all been shades of gray. Gray is a neutral, so it’s easy to work with.

Have you been “going gray” as well? We offer a wide range of grays, of course, but Rossi Home Decorating Center is all about color. We love helping our customers choose exciting shades for their home. We recommend that a customer bring in an actual upholstery swatch, bedding or carpet sample rather than just a photo on his or her cell phone, to give us better guidance and inspiration.

Bernard Rossi

Are you seeing any décor trends for 2019? We are really excited about the resurgence of wallcovering. A gorgeous wallcovering in an entrance foyer or dining room makes such a dramatic statement. We have hundreds of collections in different styles, textures and colors…even gray!

Stunning New Design Welcomes Regular Patients and New Ones By Martta Kelly, photos courtesy of Troy Orthodontics

T

roy Orthodontics offers state-ofthe-art orthodontic treatment for all ages. In order to accommodate her flourishing practice, Dr. Tuhina Roy, DDS, has remodeled her office, creating a pleasing new interior with additional seating in the waiting area. “As we’ve become busier, some of the original equipment needed to be replaced,” she says. “In addition, the distance from the waiting room to the restroom was inconvenient for family members accompanying patients to their appointment.” She hired an architectural design firm that helped her locate the appropriate equipment and create an ideal interior configuration that has improved the flow of traffic. She also worked with a company that selected new furnishings and worked on a new interior design.

“We now have a beautiful, modern space that can best be described as ‘calming,’” Roy says. The patient experience is enhanced by fully stocked and working dental chairs for efficient appointments, a remodeled checkout area making it convenient for payment and appointments, stunning new designs in all rooms with modern fixtures, a private office to discuss specifics of patient treatment, and a tooth brushing station where patients are instructed how to brush while wearing braces. Mosaic and tile designs were used in many of the fixtures. One thing that hasn’t changed is Dr. Roy’s desire to offer patients the best service possible. “We’ve added a few computer stations and upgraded our software so we can be more accessible to our patients whenever they contact us,” she says. She also runs a digital, paperless office, which

estled in the heart of Verona, Suite 707 Beauty Bar & Boutique is known as Verona’s best kept secret, and a destination for women looking for unique finds and a dose of retail therapy. Among the glitter-painted walls, exclusive apparel and one-of-a-kind accessories line the wardrobe sections and cheerful staff are ready to offer fashion advice at a moment’s notice. “It’s one of those places where you can get a little bit of everything—and it’s all high-end. We always try to get the best quality for the best prices,” explained the manager of Suite 707. Suite 707 offers something for every occasion, from streetwear and corporate attire to special occasion pieces perfect for a night out—bandage dresses, skirts and tops, cocktail dresses and more. Most of the merchandise is cultivated from exclusive designers from all around the world that aren’t found at the mall. The boutique has a number of exotic finds and quality pieces, and sells exclusive “cult” brands, vegan leather goods, luxury fur and faux fur items—such as vests and pom-pom hats. Customers will also find a bevy of gorgeous bridal jewelry, purses, and clutches throughout the shop. “All of our jewelry are distinctive pieces. For instance, we’ll have one particular

necklace in three different finishes, and once those three pieces are gone, you’ll never see it again,” said the manager, who hand-picks the jewelry herself. “Our clutches are all hand-made from a designer in Texas, and designed to be very versatile. We provide cross-body and

wristlet chains, and some are designed with two finishes that can be reversed for a different look.” The store guarantees its jewelry and clutches for a year—giving customers peace of mind. In addition to clothing and accessories, Suite 707 has a large selection of unique giftware and Voluspa candles and fragrances. Above all, the shopper experience is paramount at Suite 707. The shop has become a haven for its loyal clientele, who rely on the Suite 707 team to help them find the perfect outfits. “It’s really a feel-good place,” said the manager. “It’s all about fixing each other’s crowns and helping women find pieces that make them feel confident.”

Tips for Eating Healthy During the Holidays By Jackie Schatell, photo by Dan Epstein

Heather Shasa, MS, RD

E

ating healthy during the holidays can be difficult–even for the healthiest of eaters. Heather Shasa, MS, RD, Little Falls ShopRite’s retail registered dietitian, offers the following tips for maintaining healthy eating habits throughout the holiday season.

With so many foods and drinks to choose from in social settings during the holidays, is it possible to eat healthy during the holidays? Yes, it is possible! By approaching the holiday season with a positive and healthier state of mind, it can help to set us up for success. By not skipping meals, being mindful of “tiny tastes,” and choosing unsweetened beverages, we can help curb cravings and stay on track!

What confuses people the most when eating in social situations during the holidays? When eating in social situations, it can be difficult to be aware and present in what food options we are choosing. We often get distracted and lose our ability to recognize our hunger and fullness cues. We are also influenced by our families and friends and their eating behaviors and habits.

What are some tricks for eating healthy during the holidays? Some tips for eating healthy during the holidays are to not arrive to a party hungry as it may cause overeating. Bring a nutritious dish with you, so you know there will be a healthier option to choose from. And, practice mindful eating by stepping away from the buffet table and engaging in conversations with family and friends.

Do you have any nutritious food/ meal suggestions? For an appetizer, try a low-sodium soup or balsamic-roasted root vegetables; for an entrée, stuffed acorn squash with quinoa, walnuts, and dried fruit, works well; and for dessert, homemade apple crumble is delicious!

There are so many festive foods calling to us from the aisles during the holiday season, how do you recommend we navigate the aisles? Decide what meals you would like to create for the week or holiday celebration and then create a grocery shopping list based upon those recipes. Your list will be your guide when navigating the aisles to help you save more time during the busy, winter months. In addition, balancing your Fall 2018

shopping cart the same way you would your plate is also helpful. Adding in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy items to your cart can provide a variety of ingredients for nutritious meal and snack options.

Foot & Ankle Pain, At Any Age, is Not an Option By Martta Kelly

D

r. Matthew F. Wachtler of Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists spoke to Little Falls Magazine about the wide range of patients he serves.

Typically, what is the average age of your patients? I see patients of all ages, from toddlers to senior citizens. Each age group has their own unique foot problems they suffer from.

What are the most common injuries you see in younger children? With toddlers, I see anything from gait abnormalities, such as in-toeing or flatfeet, to warts, a common virus seen frequently in children.

What about older children and teenagers? This is a group with a wide variety of ailments, from painful ingrown toenails to growth plate injuries, specifically to the heel due to rigorous activity.

How about your adult patient population? Many people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are weekend warriors, which often results in conditions such as Achilles tendonitis and other sports-related overuse injuries.

What are some of the challenges that seniors face? Many seniors suffer from arthritis, whether it be in the ankle, foot, or big toe joints. This is also the age when foot conditions related to diabetes or vascular disease may begin to surface. For patients of all ages, no matter the diagnosis, living with foot Dr. Matthew F. Wachtler and ankle pain is not an option. Dr. Wachtler suggests, “Whether the solution is simple or complex, it is always best to have the problem evaluated as early as possible to begin treatment and to ensure appropriate return to activity.” Dr. Wachtler and the entire team at Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists work to provide the highest quality care, giving patients the attention they deserve. Their primary goal is to get each and every patient back on their feet to do the things they love.

Helping Patients Live Their BEST LIVES By Susan Baldani, photos by Dan Epstein

r. Katherine Cwiklinski and Dr. Sheela Thomson, co-owners of FYZICAL®Therapy and Balance Center, help people regain control of their lives after an accident or medical issue. Formerly known as Paragon Physical Therapy, they have been in Little Falls for seven years. Drs. Cwiklinski and Thomson have multiple certifications, including LSVT BIG for Parkinson’s Treatment. They are hands-on and get to know their patients quite well. “We’re super friendly, so it’s like a relaxed, fun, family atmosphere in here,” said Dr. Cwiklinski. They offer comprehensive evaluations of patients and design specific exercises and routines that can be done at home.

Left-right: Johanne Martinez, Katherine Cwiklinski, PT, DPT, Sheela Thomson, PT, DPT & Sadie Rodriguez

One of the unique services they offer is the FYZICAL® Overhead Support System (S.O.S.) ™ that helps with balance issues. Patients are situated comfortably in a harness that hangs from the ceiling and can hold up to 1100 pounds. Without the fear of falling, they can rehab quicker than with the traditional method where a therapist continuously holds a person to prevent them from falling. Training more independently will allow patients’ brains to recognize when they are about to fall and, with the therapist’s help, learn how to prevent this from happening. Patients build up their strength

while walking and strength training in a perfectly safe way. According to Dr. Cwiklinski, their center is the only one in the area that offers this service. FYZICAL® also has an orthopedic rehab program. They deal with ankle sprains, neck and lower back pain, all types of sports injuries, knee and hip replacements, auto accidents, neurological issues and many others. In addition to the more specialized treatments and equipment, they perform the more common therapies such as electrical stimulation and ultrasound for pain relief and muscle relaxation, stretching, and soft tissue mobilizations. Another unique feature is their fitness and wellness program, for patients who want to continue exercising to maintain their function and strength gains. Patients can actually use the center like a gym. Dr. Cwiklinski says one of the most common ailments they encounter is lower back pain. Maintaining good posture can help ease discomfort. “You need to sit up tall,” she said.

Dental Implants Offer an Enduring and Natural Smile By Cynthia Burns

A

to Z Family Dentistry is a full-service practice with the goal of helping patients maintain healthy smiles that will last a lifetime. Here, Dr. Marina Guelfguat, who founded the practice, explains the benefits of dental implants.

When is an implant recommended? An implant replaces a tooth that was extracted or is missing. It is essentially a new tooth made of a titanium screw that fuses with jaw bone and an abutment and crown to look like a real tooth. There are no limits to the amount of implants a patient can have.

What are the benefits of implants?

The staff of A to Z Family Dentistry

They are more durable, longer lasting and can’t develop cavities or require root canal. Implants offer another modality in addition to general dentistry. An implant provides a fixed prothesis. It doesn’t move in your mouth the way a denture does, which makes it easier to eat. An implant is a one tooth solution for a one tooth problem, unlike a bridge that requires work on adjacent teeth in order to replace just one tooth.

Do you perform the implants? I am fortunate to have Dr. Manuel Barry Gordon on staff. He is a board-certified periodontist and implant surgeon with extensive experience. I focus on the final esthetics and functionality and Dr. Gordon helps me make it happen surgically.

What advances in technology have made implants the better option? We use the Straumann® implant system. It is proven and has remained a leader in advances in implantology. Dr. Gordon utilizes 3D cone beam technology to assess jaw bone quality by analyzing a precise 3D image of the area. He performs virtual implant surgery on a computer before the actual procedure.

alue Companies, based in Clifton, is a leading real estate development, investment and management company. It has an impressive portfolio of 3,226 multifamily residential apartments in New Jersey and New York. Here, Jack Linefsky, vice president of Property Management, shares outstanding features of The Bromley at 44 Main.

What is Value Companies’ role at The Bromley? We handled the leasing of the 40 units there and are the management company for the property.

Is there more to Value’s services than on-site management? As a larger company, Value develops and implements proactive and comprehensive multifamily management plans that greatly benefit apartment communities in customer service, maintenance, operations, leasing, occupancy and marketing.

How would you describe the property? I consider it a boutique, luxury development, one that offers a higher standard of living. There are cutting edge amenities, an on-site fitness center and a community room.

What are the advantages of having Value Companies manage The Bromley? Residents get the benefit of a large company with a small-town feel. Value has the resources and infrastructure to maintain The Bromley to high standards. It allows residents to enjoy a more carefree way of living. There are on-site maintenance technicians and a leasing agent. There is an online work order process and a resident portal. We take care of needs quickly and efficiently.

Why is The Bromley an ideal place to live? It’s a new property and it’s been exciting to see the rehabilitation of housing in Little Fall 2018

Falls and a return to community-based living that is convenient to downtown and mass transit. There are sponsored activities to encourage residents to develop new hobbies and to get to know their neighbors. The street level has some wonderful retail stores including 2 Sweet, a bakery, and Sweetberry Bowls, a trendy chain restaurant.

Are the apartments spacious? The Bromley offers one- and twobedroom apartments. The one bedrooms range from 750 to over 1,000 square feet, while the two bedrooms range from 950 to just over 1,200 square feet.

Wrapping Up the Latest Improvements in Little Falls By Jessica Schiffenhaus, photo courtesy of Al Kahwaty Standing (left-right): Al Kahwaty, Tanya Seber, & Chris Vancheri Seated: James Damiano

O

ver the last two years, the Little Falls township council—whose members include Anthony Sgobba, Maria Cordonnier, William Liess, Tanya Seber, and Christopher Vancheri— along with the mayor’s office have worked to effect change for residents of the town. We sat down with council president Anthony Sgobba to discuss some of the council’s major achievements. Little Falls now has its own 24/7 professional EMT response team and two new emergency vehicles. “We’ve reduced ambulance response times from 20 minutes to under five minutes,” said Sgobba. “The worst feeling is waiting for that ambulance to come. So now we have two crews ready to go at any moment.” The town council has implemented several conveniences for residents as well. For instance, more curbside recycling days. “We’ve expanded our recycling program at no cost to taxpayers,” said Sgobba. 56

Little Falls Magazine

Now residents have more days available for recycling. In addition, there is more public access to town meetings. The council brought back a second public comment session, and also live stream the meetings for folks that can’t make it there in person. Traffic and rough roads can sometimes be the indirect consequences of being a well-situated town in New Jersey. To alleviate these concerns, the township has updated the street paving schedule, so town roads are scheduled to be repaved on a rolling basis. “No longer will we wait 20 years and repave half the town. Every year we have selected streets to repave,” commented Sgobba. And, to help reduce traffic, the town has hired a daytime traffic officer and is looking to add a nighttime officer. The township has also worked toward stabilizing taxes. “We reduced the taxpayer’s debt by $400,000 by getting Fall 2018

better rates and were able to stabilize taxes,” said Sgobba. Plus, residents can now pay their taxes online through the completely redesigned and updated the Little Falls town website. “We’re also proud to report that our school system continues to improve, with dramatic improvements in PARCC scores over the last several years. They just dedicated a new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) lab. These are all good reasons for people to want to live and raise their families in Little Falls,” according to Sgobba. “If elected, we hope to continue this progress with Al Kahwaty, the newest member of the Damiano Team, who would replace retiring Councilman Bill Leiss,” Council President Sgobba continued.

Q&A with Dr. Glenn Sorrentino THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER TREATMENT PROTOCOL Dr. Glenn Sorrentino

M

any people with aches, pains, injuries and chronic conditions often don’t know where to turn. Dr. Glenn Sorrentino of NJ Spine & Joint in Cedar Grove sheds light on the importance of the proper treatment protocol.

Q. Why do people in pain feel hopeless? A. Sometimes people think, “Oh I’ve tried this therapy or that treatment and nothing worked.” That can be true. One type of therapy or treatment may not be effective. What’s important is to have the right combination of treatments.

Q. What’s different about your treatment protocol? A. What sets us apart is our integration of services and different levels of therapies. Our treatments, therapies and technologies work in sync to get a patient better. We get to the root of the problem and customize a treatment program designed specifically for each individual. Patients who couldn’t get relief from their pain elsewhere come to us and see great results.

Cold Laser Therapy

Q. What should people know about pain? A. Pain in one area is often the result of imbalance or weakness in another area. Biomechanics and body balance are very important. Knee pain is often caused by the hips being out of alignment, and shoulder pain almost always has a neck component.

Q. What kind of results do you get? A. One patient who hadn’t worked in 10 years because of headaches and fibromyalgia is now back at work after two months of our treatments, which in this case included IV vitamin therapy. Another patient, who had been to many places for a longtime shoulder problem, one day looked at me and said, “I can’t believe my shoulder doesn’t hurt anymore.” We hear those kind of comments every day in our office.

Canfield Office Park 870 Pompton Ave • Suite A-1 Cedar Grove, NJ 07009 973-433-0889

Q. Do you find your work rewarding? A. Absolutely. I believe in what we are doing, which is why I offer a free initial consultation. It provides a way to explain what the problem is. When you leave, you’ll know what’s wrong with you and what we can do. I’m all about helping people live healthy, pain-free lives.

Think Ahead When Putting Your House on the Market By Jackie Schatell, photo by Dan Epstein

eciding to sell your house is a big decision, and it’s just the first of many to be made along the way. Choosing a professional full-time realtor is most important. Nancy Scancarella, of Realty Executives, in Little Falls, is very handson with her clients, guiding them every step of the way through the transaction. “Being a savvy negotiator is half the battle in obtaining the best price for both the buyer and seller,” said Scancarella.

Scancarella says you should allow about three months to get your home ready after deciding to sell it to make it as appealing as possible to potential buyers. “Think ahead, if you have a pool or flower gardens, take photos when they are at their best,” said Scancarella. According to Scancarella, to get your home ready for showings, she will carefully inspect it with you, recommending things like repairing holes and fixing anything broken or worn including any marks left from repaired leaks. She may also advise finishing a room or basement to ensure you get top dollar. She says your home needs to be sparkly clean, free of clutter and to keep the drapes and curtains open to let in natural light. “Think ahead,” says Scancarella. “Doing so will make all the difference!”

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH:

Feel Better Naturally at Essex Acupuncture By Cynthia Burns, photos by Dan Epstein

T

he health and vitality of patients are of utmost importance to Talah Ysaac, owner and founder of Essex Acupuncture. Talah has worked as an acupuncturist for the past seven years, averaging over 100 patients a week, most seeking her services for pain management. “In most cases, the average patient can see improvement within the first few weeks,” she says. Her continuing study of herbal medicine helped to hone her understanding of physiology, upon which she developed her style of practice. “I treat with acupuncture first and gauge how the patient responds. Acupuncture will help to resolve most issues, but if a symptom is persistent, I will recommend an herbal formula.” The herbs she recommends are not always exotic–ginger, cinnamon, dates and licorice are in most formulas. Talah treats a host of health conditions including women’s health, stress management, gastrointestinal ailments, fertility and pregnancy concerns, and ear, nose and throat complaints. As an acupuncturist and herbologist, she offers an effective holistic and natural approach. Having worked for more than 20 years as a healthcare professional, Talah values the importance of results that do not cause severe side effects or create detrimental addictions. “It’s a holistic approach. If I can help with pain and reduce stress symptoms, patients will be happier for it. I want to make Chinese medicine tangible to my patients and for them to understand the physiology and pathology of the body. Pain in one part of the body may be caused by a health issue in another part.” The onslaught of activity in today’s society is a concern for Talah. She advocates for quiet peacefulness for her patients and herself in what she deems is a manic, overstimulated society. Having also studied meditation and yoga, Talah states, “Acupuncture can

Talah Ysaac achieve that peacefulness. It could take months of practice in yoga and meditation in order to achieve the results that acupuncture can provide in a few sessions.” Talah strives to achieve the highest credentials in her field. One of the newest featured specialties on his menu is the classic Steak Diane, prepared for guests at tableside. His contemporary spin on this once-popular mid-century classic is an exciting experience that appeals to all the senses —the sight of the Tomahawk Steak, the smell of the mustard, the whoosh of the flambe. The fact that it’s happening right at your table along with some personal and intimate moments with the chef, creates a very special dining event. Classic Italian with a Modern Twist By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

he delicious dishes on the menu at La Brace Seafood & Grill come from generations of Italian cooking, says Daniela Moncada, who, with her father Nicola Moncada, owns and runs La Brace. At 29, Daniela has already been in the restaurant business for 14 years, having started working in her dad’s former restaurant, Due Nicola, after school. “That’s where I began to develop my passion for cooking,” she says. Her father taught her about both food preparation and recipe creation, and she went on to work her way up the food world ladder as server, maître d’ of a Miami restaurant, and chef. When she opened her own restaurant in 2017, she first called it Daniela’s Bistro, but when her father decided to partner with her in 2018, bringing along his chef of 18 years, they renamed it to honor the partnership. Now, she and Nicola are both out of the kitchen, running front of house and making sure diners have a superb experience. La Brace offers both freshly caught seafood dishes, such as branzino (sea bass); grilled octopus with radicchio, red onions, and chickpeas; pastas, such as homemade pappardelle with a seafood ragout; and specialty desserts, such as homemade ricotta cake with chocolate chips.

Nicola Moncada As the holidays approach, La Brace is available to book parties (up to 40 people), and for catering. They recommend booking both at least a month in advance to ensure reserving the desired dates.
