ocated in the loft of Shag86 Salon, the newly expanded Shag Shop is a women’s clothing and accessory boutique offering fabulous finds and one-of-a-kind items. Here, Sarah Ferraro discusses the shop and what inspired it.

What was your inspiration behind opening the store? We wanted to create a unique and exclusive shopping experience for customers within our 3-level salon.

What unique products are for sale? The shop sells VeganBio shoes that my father makes, which have been successful for many years in Europe. This summer was its first season in the states. The brand is focused on making products that are environmentally and animal friendly; we are a PETA approved vegan brand. We have very exclusive styling you can’t find anywhere, and only have few pieces of each style then the items are gone...so no one will have that very same style!

Along with the vegan brand, what else can customers find? Since the vegan brand is primarily a spring and summer product, we expanded the boutique so our customers can enjoy it all year round. We have jewelry, scarfs, hair accessories, and clothing.

How does the Shag Shop fit in with Shag86? Just like the salon, the shop has a head-to-toe fun atmosphere that I consider a true find.

Says Dr. Shier, “I believe that many foot complaints result from improperly fitted shoes.” Because of this, he has plenty of advice for patients when it comes shoe shopping. “I always remind patients that a shoe with laces will usually be the best choice for comfort.” He also reminds them not to shop by size, as there is no standard in the shoe industry.

“In a tie shoe, whether it is dress, casual or sneakers, there should be adequate room in the toe area,” he notes. He suggests choosing shoes that are made of leather for breathability. He also notes that the price of the shoe has nothing to do with the fit. Five Years of Offering Unique Gifts By Susan Baldani

his September, Verona’s Main Street Cottage marked five years of providing unique gifts to their valued customers. Owner Donna Ciccolini celebrated the gift shop’s fifth anniversary with discounts and giveaways for everyone. The store carries a variety of merchandise including signs, wine accessories, hostess gifts, and wedding and baby gifts. Since many of the items are made by the Amish, Donna and her assistant, Lynn Serra, go to Pennsylvania four to five times a year to shop. They find other unique items at gift shows. Her biggest sellers are home-made candles. “Most of the fall candles are sold out by the end of September,” said Donna. Customers can also order on Main Street Cottage’s Facebook site; they ship throughout the U.S. and even offer gift-wrapping. Donna’s father, Lee Ambrose, is the official gift wrapper from the day after Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. The service is warm and personal. “When a customer comes in, I want them to leave feeling like they’ve made a friend,” said Donna.

Where Children Learn in a Safe and Caring Environment By Susan Baldani

he Goddard School has been teaching children for nearly 30 years. Amy Emann-Evanchik, the on-site owner of the Fairfield location, is proud to be celebrating their five-year anniversary this October. The accredited school is focused on early childhood education, and the children range in age from 6 weeks to 5 years, with summer programs for children up to 8. Curriculum is geared toward play-based learning, which Amy stated has been proven to be the best way for children to learn.

They also have a proprietary program called F.L.E.X., which focuses on children as a whole, encompassing their social, creative, physical, emotional and academic development. There is an Education Advisory Board consisting of researchers, educators, and experts in early childhood development, who develop and put these programs into place. Their Quality Assurance program has requirements above state standards and ensures that children have a safe and healthy environment in which to learn.

Amy Emann-Evanchik Their teachers, who all have a degree in child related fields, create lesson plans tailored to the individual children in their classrooms. There is a curriculum room full of resources that can be used to teach everything from sign language, Spanish, music, and art history to math and character development. “The teachers can pull from these and are able to create the magic,” said Amy. The Goddard School gives teachers developmental guidelines and NJ state goals so they can structure their lessons around them, while allowing them to expand on teachable moments. “We don’t have a boxed curriculum,” said Amy. “Children do not fit into a box, so we don’t want to teach them from a box.” They always focus on implementing the latest learning developments. One of these is called STEAM – science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. “Goddard has a mobile STEAM lab that visits all the preschool and pre-k classes. The children have hands-on activities to make sure that when they leave here, they are more than prepared for their next steps in private or public education,” said Amy.

he Hahn Insurance Agency has protected its clients from perils for 85 years. Established in 1933 by Charles F. Hahn to provide “hold up” insurance to butchers in Newark, the Agency has prospered through the leadership of three successive Hahn family generations. Charles F. Changing weather conditions have also created the need for flood insurance in areas where flooding does not traditionally occur, as evidenced by the recent flooding in Little Falls in August. Hahn recommends that flood insurance be purchased separately even if people do not live in traditional flood zones. Company agents can assist residents in selecting the appropriate flood policy for their needs. As it has since its inception, Hahn sees his organization evolving. hirteen years ago, Debbie Santucci retired from a career in finance with a dream of launching a business based on her passion for antiques. Now over a decade later, her business, Main Street Antiques, is going strong. “Not everyone gets to earn a living doing a hobby,” says Santucci with a laugh. “I’m living the dream!” The store, which not only sells antiques, also sells collectibles, high-end handbags, jewelry, costume jewelry, quality glass and porcelain, sterling, silver and gold flatware, lamps, furniture, curated clothing and more. New items hit the floor daily, so Santucci advises frequent visits to the store for customers seeking specific items. She says she will also search for items that her clients seek. Santucci, who loves the buying aspect of her career, spends a lot of time perusing estate sales, and going to auctions, seeking mid- to high-end items for her store. She also travels up to an hour and a half away to visit people’s homes to make purchases and often acquires merchandise from people who bring treasures to the store for evaluation. “While we don’t do full-blown ‘Antiques’ Roadshow’ events, I

o you want an amazing recipe that will give you smooth, soft, and shiny hair? Gina Torres, a prestigious stylist at Shag 86 in Little Falls, has that recipe. She specializes in Keratin treatments that deliver the ingredients for lovely locks. Torres discusses this magical formula below.

What is a Keratin treatment for hair? Keratin treatments are smoothing treatments that reduce frizz, curl, and makes the hair smoother and look healthier. It also repairs damage and breakage.

Are there different types of Keratin treatments? Yes. There are three types of Keratin treatments I offer. There is the Natural Keratin smoothing treatment which lasts for approximately five months, the Express treatment that lasts for approximately six weeks and the Blonde Keratin treatment, which I offer upon request, that lasts up to approximately five months.

What steps are involved in Keratin treatments? For the Natural and Express treatments, I wash the clients’ hair twice with a clarifying shampoo, but only once for the Blonde treatment. Hair is then dried from 80–100 percent depending on which treatment they are getting done. Next the treatment begins. For the Express Keratin, there is no processing time; the hair is blow dried immediately. For the Natural and Blonde treatments, the Keratin is left on the hair for 30 minutes before blow drying. As a final step for all treatments, a flat iron is used to seal Keratin into the hair cuticles. I discuss with the clients and give them written instructions as to how to maintain the beautiful hair that the Keratin treatments produce. What made you decide to start searching for a new brand affiliation? At the Habitat for Humanity ReStore â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this is exactly what happens. The Wayne ReStore is a retail thrift store that accepts donations of new and gentlyused furniture, appliances and building materials from businesses and individuals. These items are then sold to the public in the ReStore in Wayne. Last year the ReStore, which also sells a full line of new kitchen cabinets, generated over $1 million in sales.

According to Walt FitzPatrick, the director of the ReStore, “It’s what we call a winwin-win for all. The donors receive a tax write-off; the buyers save up to 80 percent off the original price; and the ReStore keeps roughly 600 tons of waste out of the landfill.”

“We encourage buyers to keep their eyes on Facebook and to stop by often because our inventory changes every day,” said FitzPatrick, who added, “Prices are nonnegotiable but the price of an item goes down 20 percent every 30 days if the item remains on the sales floor…but most items sell in the first two weeks.”

Donors are asked to review the website for information on the types of items being accepted, and to “self-schedule” a donation pickup. Buyers are encouraged to peruse the Facebook page for a sampling of what is usually available in store. New items are added to the Facebook page daily.

The ReStore, which has been open for six years, is located at 415 Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne, NJ. Doors are open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm and Sunday, noon to 5pm. anyan School is a K-12, private, non-profit, state-approved program for students whose academic and social development is compromised by a learning disability. “Public schools have wonderful programs, but there are students who require more intensive instruction,” explains Wendy McNeill, Banyan’s director and principal of the elementary school. “Our curriculum is research-based and individually tailored for students who have significant language-based difficulties, such as dyslexia.” Students are grouped by common ability and similar instructional needs. Instructors adhere to a multisensory teaching approach.

There is an emphasis on social skills. Beginning in middle school, students are prepared for college or the workplace. “We provide job coaching and job sampling. ay Damiano and his brother, Warren, coowners of Premier Properties-The Damiano Group, embrace a motto: “We Write Happy Beginnings.” They are pleased that Little Falls is at the happy beginning of a rejuvenation, the result of a Transit Village designation. Ray explains that through rezoning and incentives spearheaded by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), Little Falls is committed to revitalizing and redeveloping the area around its transit hub. The result will be a mixeduse neighborhood with a strong residential component. The goal is to increase housing opportunities within walking distance of shops, jobs, offices and restaurants. The municipality is awaiting final approval from the NJDOT to proceed. Ray envisions “a combination of retail space on the ground level and residential above. It will extend from the center of town toward Route 23.”

The Transit Village designation benefits all residents by making Little Falls eligible for priority funding and technical assistance from state agencies and eligibility for NJDOT grants. Rejuvenation and beautification improve the financial opportunities for buyers and sellers in town. “For buyers,” says Ray, “there’s a greater inventory of housing that offers an opportunity for them to consider housing options that weren’t available before.” And, for sellers, it is anticipated there will be more opportunities for them to list their properties at an additional value.

ith autumn finally here, it is not only leaves that change color. Clothing and even home décor change as well. Little Falls Magazine recently spoke with Bernard Rossi, owner of Rossi Decorating Center, about his thoughts on color in general and a specific interior design trend for 2019.

Why has the most popular interior paint color for the past decade been gray? Paint colors follow decor trends. For the past 10 years, furniture, bedding, and even accessories have all been shades of gray. Gray is a neutral, so it’s easy to work with.

In order to accommodate her flourishing practice, Dr. Tuhina Roy, DDS, has remodeled her office, creating a pleasing new interior with additional seating in the waiting area. “As we’ve become busier, some of the original equipment needed to be replaced,” she says. “In addition, the distance from the waiting room to the restroom was inconvenient for family members accompanying patients to their appointment.” She hired an architectural design firm that helped her locate the appropriate equipment and create an ideal interior configuration that has improved the flow of traffic. She also worked with a company that selected new furnishings and worked on a new interior design.

“We now have a beautiful, modern space that can best be described as ‘calming,’” Roy says. The patient experience is enhanced by fully stocked and working dental chairs for efficient appointments, a remodeled checkout area making it convenient for payment and appointments, stunning new designs in all rooms with modern fixtures, a private office to discuss specifics of patient treatment, and a tooth brushing station where patients are instructed how to brush while wearing braces. Mosaic and tile designs were used in many of the fixtures. One thing that hasn’t changed is Dr. Roy’s desire to offer patients the best service possible. “We’ve added a few computer stations and upgraded our software so we can be more accessible to our patients whenever they contact us,” she says. She also runs a digital, paperless office, which

With so many foods and drinks to choose from in social settings during the holidays, is it possible to eat healthy during the holidays? Yes, it is possible! By approaching the holiday season with a positive and healthier state of mind, it can help to set us up for success. By not skipping meals, being mindful of “tiny tastes,” and choosing unsweetened beverages, we can help curb cravings and stay on track!

What confuses people the most when eating in social situations during the holidays? When eating in social situations, it can be difficult to be aware and present in what food options we are choosing. We often get distracted and lose our ability to recognize our hunger and fullness cues. We are also influenced by our families and friends and their eating behaviors and habits.

What are some tricks for eating healthy during the holidays? Some tips for eating healthy during the holidays are to not arrive to a party hungry as it may cause overeating. Bring a nutritious dish with you, so you know there will be a healthier option to choose from. And, practice mindful eating by stepping away from the buffet table and engaging in conversations with family and friends.

Do you have any nutritious food/ meal suggestions? For an appetizer, try a low-sodium soup or balsamic-roasted root vegetables; for an entrée, stuffed acorn squash with quinoa, walnuts, and dried fruit, works well; and for dessert, homemade apple crumble is delicious!

There are so many festive foods calling to us from the aisles during the holiday season, how do you recommend we navigate the aisles? Decide what meals you would like to create for the week or holiday celebration and then create a grocery shopping list based upon those recipes. Your list will be your guide when navigating the aisles to help you save more time during the busy, winter months. In addition, balancing your Fall 2018

shopping cart the same way you would your plate is also helpful. Adding in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy items to your cart can provide a variety of ingredients for nutritious meal and snack options.

Foot & Ankle Pain, At Any Age, is Not an Option By Martta Kelly

r. Matthew F. Wachtler of Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists spoke to Little Falls Magazine about the wide range of patients he serves.

Typically, what is the average age of your patients? I see patients of all ages, from toddlers to senior citizens. Each age group has their own unique foot problems they suffer from.

What are the most common injuries you see in younger children? With toddlers, I see anything from gait abnormalities, such as in-toeing or flatfeet, to warts, a common virus seen frequently in children.

What about older children and teenagers? This is a group with a wide variety of ailments, from painful ingrown toenails to growth plate injuries, specifically to the heel due to rigorous activity.

How about your adult patient population? Many people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are weekend warriors, which often results in conditions such as Achilles tendonitis and other sports-related overuse injuries.

Formerly known as Paragon Physical Therapy, they have been in Little Falls for seven years. Drs. Cwiklinski and Thomson have multiple certifications, including LSVT BIG for Parkinson’s Treatment. ver the last two years, the Little Falls township council—whose members include Anthony Sgobba, Maria Cordonnier, William Liess, Tanya Seber, and Christopher Vancheri— along with the mayor’s office have worked to effect change for residents of the town. We sat down with council president Anthony Sgobba to discuss some of the council’s major achievements. Little Falls now has its own 24/7 professional EMT response team and two new emergency vehicles. “We’ve reduced ambulance response times from 20 minutes to under five minutes,” said Sgobba. “The worst feeling is waiting for that ambulance to come. So now we have two crews ready to go at any moment.” The town council has implemented several conveniences for residents as well. For instance, more curbside recycling days. “We’ve expanded our recycling program at no cost to taxpayers,” said Sgobba. 56

Now residents have more days available for recycling. In addition, there is more public access to town meetings. The council brought back a second public comment session, and also live stream the meetings for folks that can’t make it there in person. Traffic and rough roads can sometimes be the indirect consequences of being a well-situated town in New Jersey. To alleviate these concerns, the township has updated the street paving schedule, so town roads are scheduled to be repaved on a rolling basis. “No longer will we wait 20 years and repave half the town. Every year we have selected streets to repave,” commented Sgobba. And, to help reduce traffic, the town has hired a daytime traffic officer and is looking to add a nighttime officer. The township has also worked toward stabilizing taxes. “We reduced the taxpayer’s debt by $400,000 by getting Fall 2018

better rates and were able to stabilize taxes,” said Sgobba. Plus, residents can now pay their taxes online through the completely redesigned and updated the Little Falls town website. “We’re also proud to report that our school system continues to improve, with dramatic improvements in PARCC scores over the last several years. They just dedicated a new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) lab. These are all good reasons for people to want to live and raise their families in Little Falls,” according to Sgobba. “If elected, we hope to continue this progress with Al Kahwaty, the newest member of the Damiano Team, who would replace retiring Councilman Bill Leiss,” Council President Sgobba continued.

he delicious dishes on the menu at La Brace Seafood & Grill come from generations of Italian cooking, says Daniela Moncada, who, with her father Nicola Moncada, owns and runs La Brace. At 29, Daniela has already been in the restaurant business for 14 years, having started working in her dad’s former restaurant, Due Nicola, after school. “That’s where I began to develop my passion for cooking,” she says. Her father taught her about both food preparation and recipe creation, and she went on to work her way up the food world ladder as server, maître d’ of a Miami restaurant, and chef. When she opened her own restaurant in 2017, she first called it Daniela’s Bistro, but when her father decided to partner with her in 2018, bringing along his chef of 18 years, they renamed it to honor the partnership. Now, she and Nicola are both out of the kitchen, running front of house and making sure diners have a superb experience. La Brace offers both freshly caught seafood dishes, such as branzino (sea bass); grilled octopus with radicchio, red onions, and chickpeas; pastas, such as homemade pappardelle with a seafood ragout; and specialty desserts, such as homemade ricotta cake with chocolate chips.
