n 2005 when Nancy Uslan was invited to travel to Rwanda with animal expert Jack Hanna to film a documentary about that country’s endangered mountain gorillas, she seized the moment…and it changed her life. Uslan, an Essex County resident and selfprofessed “lover of animals and adventure,” was awestruck by her contact with the legendary gorillas, but it was the plight of the Rwandan people, still reeling from the tragic genocide that had decimated their country eleven years earlier, that affected her most deeply. Back home, Uslan began to put her comfortable life in perspective. “I’d see a $36 entrée on a menu and realize that amount would educate a Rwandan child for a year,” she says. “I knew I had to do something, but had absolutely no idea what.” But the more she pondered, the more she realized that her ideas had one common element: education. An enthusiastic alumnus of Indiana University (I.U.), she believed that the I.U.’s Global Village living-learning
center, a dedicated residence hall for students wanting to get involved in global issues, would be a perfect partner in any plan she developed. When a mutual friend introduced Uslan to Ali Nagle, a fifth-grade teacher at a Newark TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves Success) charter school, part of a group of charter schools offering free college prep educations to deserving Newark students, Uslan’s thoughts crystallized. Hearing that Nagle was hoping to motivate her students through a program called “TEAM in Africa,” Uslan’s memories flew back to a pivotal chance meeting with a group of Rwandan schoolchildren from the Kabwende Primary School and the request of one motivated little boy named David, the only English speaker among the African children: “Will you send me a dictionary from America?” he asked. Now armed with a concrete plan, Uslan flew to I.U. and proposed to its new and enthusiastic Global Village director a collaboration between I.U. and TEAM students to benefit the Rwandan students. “He was hooked,” she says. The program was a go.

Knowing that books are rare jewels in Rwanda, Nancy Uslan, Ali Nagle, Global Village Assistant Director, Lauren Caldarera and I.U. Assistant Professor, Beth Samuelson collaborated developed the “Books & Beyond Project.” The program partners I.U. Global Village students with TEAM students, they meet twice a year and communicate throughout the year to write and illustrate level-appropriate books for the Rwandan students. The books are designed to encourage the analytical thinking and English literacy skills necessary for the students to achieve success in the global economy—skills that Rwandan President Paul Kagame had spoken of as “critical” during a 2008 United Nations’ address. Four years after Uslan’s “lifechanging” trip to Africa, Uslan, Nagle, Caldarera and Samuelson traveled to Rwanda with students from I.U. and TEAM to deliver a copy of Volume I of the students authored “The World is Our Home” to each of the 2,000 students at Kabwende Primary School, where, traditionally, only teachers have books..
Nancy Uslan
Recently, as the I.U. and TEAM website Booksnbeyond.wordpress.com student partners met in Newark to work on Volume V of the series (10,000 copies to be delivered in summer of 2013), 14-year-old TEAM Today, Nancy Uslan reports with great pride, Dastudent Khafeeon Love, a freshman at Newark vid, the Rwandan boy who only wanted a dictionary, is Collegiate High, spoke emotionally of her summer in 18 years old and hopes to become a doctor. “If there Rwanda. “It brought tears to my eyes to see the kids’ is a moral to this story,” says Uslan, “it is this: one excitement,” she says, “It just left me speechless.” person can make a difference. Keep putting one foot Says Ali Nagle, “These students appreciate how in front of the other, and in time, you will look back and lucky they were to see their direct impact on children be amazed at the distance you have traveled.” halfway around the world.” First Quarter 2013

Over 20 Years Experience!
Boosting Business by Building Relationships By Lisa Romeo
R
elationships, whether with family, friends, or neighbors, are vital, providing security, comfort, and confidence. They can give us strength when we need it most and empower us to do nearly anything. So it is in business too. Three authors from the Big Bold Business Book bring that into sharp focus. Deborah Gussoff, of Montville, utilizes relationship marketing as an independent distributor for SendOutCards and owner of In Order, Inc. She updates the adage about people preferring to do business with those they know, like, and trust, by adding, “And those they remember. The key is to meet someone, stay in touch, and build a long-term relationship,” She adds that “Your annual marketing plan should include a strategy and specific tactics for staying in touch with clients, prospects, and referral sources.” At Grove Baskets and Gifts in West Caldwell, owner Judy Bennett has an eight-point system for networking, referrals, and building relationships. It includes offering specific and honest advice when asked, knowing what unique help you can offer others, being consistently reliable, and donating goods or services to organizations that have established relationships with your current and prospective customers.

Robbi Hershon, a partner in The Hearing Group in West Orange, relies on cooperative marketing, working with vendors or manufacturers whose customizable advertising helps reduce Hershon’s marketing costs. Hershon has held co-op information sessions and open houses, which brought dozens of new people to her clinic thanks to the relationship she has with her vendors. “Not only did we grow our practice by gaining new patients, but we also generated income,” Hershon explains. At R.I. Consulting in Cedar Grove, Rosanna Imbriano advises clients to form strategic alliances with other organizations that share the same target markets and/or provide complementary products or services. A printer can partner with a graphic designer, who, in turn, partners with a writer. A real estate agent partners with a home inspector or stager. “Strategic alliances are two-way streets,” says Imbriano. “Your partners should have a vested interest in helping your business grow, and you should demonstrate an equally strong commitment to their business development.” Lisa Romeo is a freelance writer, editor, and ghostwriter. She lives in Cedar Grove and teaches creative writing at The Writers Circle. Judith Schumacher-Tilton Keeps Family Dealership on Top
By Julie Jacobs, Photos by Dan Epstein
A
sk Judith Schumacher-Tilton what’s the greatest life lesson she’s learned so far and she’s quick to answer, “Never give up. If you imagine it, you can make it happen, but you have to have depth and the power of your own convictions, which is tough today. And in business, that’s really hard.”
And she should know. Thirteen years ago, the now President of Tilton Automotive Group, unexpectedly had to take the “driver’s seat” at her father Harold’s longstanding Chevrolet dealership in Little Falls after he died suddenly from a stroke. Her family’s resilience was tested further when, just days following the funeral, her brother, Ken, who was set to head the business upon their dad’s retirement, was diagnosed with advanced cancer. Schumacher-Tilton had done clerical work at the dealership as a teenager, but was inexperienced in the daily operations of an automobile business. Not only was she now a car dealer, also she was racing regularly into Manhattan to help care for her brother. “I never wanted to sell, because I wanted Ken to get well and have something to come back to,” she recalls. (Although Ken was given just three months, he lived for three years.) Having been a full-time mom to three children, the Montclair resident applied her nurturing and organizational skills to the dealership. She also developed relationships with her father’s many contacts and networked aggressively, joining a local car-dealers group and the then newly formed General Motors Women’s Retail Network, for which she now serves as Chairman. Steering SUCCESS (continued from page 20)
Still, it was a difficult period. As she points out, the business is multi-tiered, involving new cars, used cars, parts and service. “I was determined to make it work.” Ultimately, her perseverance paid off. With the help of her son Stephen, who left his career as an attorney, and who now serves as the company’s CFO, and Ken’s son Jeffrey Schumacher, a sales manager at Schumacher Chevrolet, her dealership has not only survived, but also thrived. In fact, the business has continuously been recognized both regionally and nationally for overall growth and sales. And, in 2008, she added another dealership to the Tilton Automotive Group by acquiring Gearhart Chevrolet in Denville, where her son, Kenneth, now works as the Vice President. Both dealerships rank among the state’s largest-volume Chevy dealers.
“I want to promote faith in the American car business and keep our dealerships strong” —Judith Schumacher-Tilton
Schumacher-Tilton works six days a week monitoring the day-to-day activities of both dealerships. She credits the success of Tilton Automotive Group to her “amazing staff” and enjoys working side by side with her sons and nephew. She herself has been acknowledged frequently for her contributions to the industry (see sidebar), most recently as the Northeast Regional TIME Dealer of the Year. Nominated by her peers, she is the first woman dealer in New Jersey to receive the prestigious award, which honors recipients not only for their profitability, but also their civic-mindedness and philanthropy as well.

Color Your World
And Freshen Up Your Interior
T
ry these tips from top interior designer Lynn M. Masiello, CBD-CKD, a Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer and president and CEO of LM Designs in Verona.
Q: I am hoping to sell my home in the spring. Can you recommend some inexpensive ideas that I can use now, to freshen up the interior? We all fall in love with the world again in spring, so breathe fresh air into your home’s interior now with color. New paint colors are the most cost-effective way to give your home a new look while increasing buyer appeal. • Before you paint, patch holes and imperfections, protect floors and remove electrical plates and hardware. • Lift low ceilings by applying a lighter hue in the same color family as the walls. Conversely, large rooms with high ceilings will feel more intimate if ceilings are painted in a darker shade. • For detailed moldings, use a contrasting tone in a glossy finish to make them “pop” and if your trim is basic, make it special by using the same tint as the walls, but in a reflective finish. A plethora of information exists on the subject of color psychology, so if you don’t know where to start, start with what you know: • Find an article of clothing in a color that makes you feel fabulous and work from there in choosing a paint color for the entertaining or dining space. • Neutral is not better, it’s boring - so don’t be afraid of color! • Bathrooms with white fixtures and kitchens with stainless steel appliances will benefit from a backdrop of bold color, but be careful not to use ones that are too cold. If you like greens and blues, choose ones that have warm undertones like yellow and red. And of course, coordinate paint colors with permanent items such as cabinets and carpeting. Lynn M. Masiello, CBD-CKD, is an interior designer and a Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer. She is president and CEO of LM Designs. For more great design ideas, contact her at 973-857-1561; email, LM@LMDesignsLLC.com. Find before and after photos, recommendations and more at LMDesignsLLC.com.

Overcome Your Organizing Obstacles By Mary Carlomagno
O
rganizing is not a one time only proposition; it is a process that needs to be learned over time. Like any other learning process, there is a learning curve. After all, you did not learn French on the first lesson or get in shape with one workout (If only that were true!). Think of organizing in the same way as it takes time to have long lasting effects. And like any human process, there may be obstacles that stand in the way. The key is to remain on your path and understand that setbacks can happen, but should not deter you from your ultimate goal. To help you navigate those obstacles, I offer the following advice: Obstacle: My partner is so disorganized. Solution: When engaging in any project with a partner, make communication the key and deal with the project at hand rather than the person. Once you remove the emotional baggage and manage the tasks free of emotion, you will be able to gain consensus. Think compromise where each side inevitably will need to give and to get. Obstacle: It will take too long! Solution: Flip the way you look at organizing as a means of gaining time, rather than losing it. Ultimately, being organized will help you save time, money and energy, so investing a little time up front is worth the pay off in the end. If it helps, think of all those times you searched and searched for a misplaced item that had it been organized, you would have found in a snap! Obstacle: I work from home, so I am always working! Solution: Many work from homers have trouble setting boundaries for where work ends and where personal life begins. Realize that how you work is within your power and that starts with setting good work habits. Establishing a consistent routine and schedule that you can maintain will help you close the door to your home office when the workday ends. Obstacle: Every time I organize I have a “look what I found moment” that derails the process. Solution: Distractions from unpleasant tasks are easy to come by. Instead of stopping the project at hand, hold that item you have uncovered until the end. It then becomes a reward for all that good organizing work. A great way to battle procrastination is to put a reward at the task’s completion. Obstacle: How do I keep the momentum going? Solution: Doing something everyday will not only encourage steady progress, but also instill a familiarity with your items and what needs to be done. When you have frequent touch with the project, you begin to gain the confidence and control you need to accomplish your task.
Follow Mary Carlomagno on Facebook and Twitter and post your organizing questions as they may be featured in an upcoming article.

mid the beautiful Aidekman Jewish Federation Campus just off Route 10 in Whippany are several distinctive buildings known as the Lester Senior Housing Community. Co-owned and operated by the Jewish Community Housing Corporation of Metropolitan New Jersey (JCHC), Lester Senior Housing is under Jewish auspices, but is inclusive and open to everyone.
community life. The ongoing and popular program, “Kids, Concerts and Cookies” has children from local schools visit and entertain with songs, often interacting with residents to form lasting bonds of friendship. Additionally, transportation to cultural and community events, including membership in the Jewish Community Center of MetroWest’s Men/Women at Leisure Programs are very popular as well.
Well-respected as an exceptional senior residential community of 175 units, it caters to the 62+ population and is comprised of both independent living apartments and assisted living residences. Some of the noteworthy amenities include: on-site medical, podiatry and dental services, a fullyequipped exercise room including state-of-the-art equipment, wellness/physical and cognitive therapy centers, a country store, glatt kosher meals served 7 days a week, housekeeping and linen services, library, a computer lab, a chapel and additional community rooms.
Renowned as the first Jewish-sponsored kosher Assisted Living community in the state of New Jersey, The Judy and Josh Weston Assisted Living Residences offer studio and 1-bedroom units. These seniors can take advantage of help with daily activities such as getting dressed, bathing, taking medications, walking and getting in and out of bed. Assistance from licensed practical nurses, certified medication aides and certified nursing assistants enhance the daily lives of these residents.
According to CEO of JCHC, Harold ColtonMax, “When we opened in May of 2001, our goal was to create and maintain a rich and nurturing supportive community where seniors could enjoy a range of options.” A mixed-income choice of housing options includes market rate housing and low-income housing as well. The Margaret and Martin Heller Independent Living Apartments offer a mix of one and two bedroom units at market rental as well as one bedroom low and moderate living units. Active seniors participate in a tenants association and a mini-university where lectures, movies and cultural trips are a vital part of
Nowadays the new catch phrase in the world of senior community living is “aging in place.” Alex Gross, Administrator of Lester Senior Housing explains, “Adult children seeking a safe haven for their aging parents know that there will be health challenges and possibly emergencies along the way. Stability and returning to a familiar place provides comfort and a strong sense of security for our residents.” Keeping members of any community happy is a daunting challenge and Gross is quick to share what has become the most reoccurring criticism from residents. On any given day, a senior will approach Gross and say, “There is so much to choose from, so many wonderful activities— why didn’t I come to Lester sooner?”

n 2004, at the urging of her best friend (or as Deborah would say, BFF) and political mentor, Joyce Wilson Harley, Esq., the accomplished and gifted attorney Deborah E. Collins accepted a volunteer position created by Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr., Collins became the Chair of a 22-member Disparity Study Commission that investigated whether minority-owned businesses receive a fair share of public contracts. After eight months of painstaking work, the Commission’s comprehensive 250-page report was impressive and staggering—it revealed that only half of one percent of professional public contracts were awarded to women, minorities and small business owners.

Prompted by public outcry and moved by the Commission’s findings, DiVincenzo actively recruited Collins to be the Director of his newly created Office of Small Business Development and Affirmative Action (SBDAA) in Essex County. Since its opening in December 2005, the SBDAA has produced a variety of programs, business expos and outreach initiatives designed to help make public contracting and procurement policies and procedures more available to the community of women, minority and small business owners. So how, and more important, why did Collins—a Brooklyn-born, longtime New Jersey resident who began her working career as a bilingual educator—segue from an exceptional legal career to eventually become the Director of SBDAA? Collins says simply, “A lot of people helped me along the way. I had excellent women mentors who were trailblazers and pioneers. Now it’s my turn to pay back.” And so she does. Under Collins’ stewardship, and armed with her legal expertise in employment litigation and human resources from her corporate work history at prestigious companies—including Time Warner, JP Morgan, and Goldman Sachs—SBDAA has grown since its inception. In just seven years, SBDAA is responsible for 8.35 percent of available contract dollars being awarded to woman-owned, minority and small business owners.
One example of Collins’ heartfelt handson approach occurred in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy when her office was contacted for emergency services. Remembering one independent contractor from Essex county whose business was failing, SBDAA helped the minority business owner obtain contracts for the emergency services. Only through the resources and efforts of the SBDAA was the business bolstered and ultimately saved from economic disaster. Additionally, Collins is enthusiastic about upcoming opportunities when New Jersey hosts Super Bowl XIV in 2014. Working with Business Connect, the Host Committee for the National Football League, she will help identify qualified woman and minority Deborah E. Collins, Esq. (second from the left) with business owners to bid for contractual work. vendors Eileen R. Della Volle, Jim Davis and Charlotte Diakite. Court Reporting: A Field in High Demand By Jean Melone, CCR, President

ourt reporting is one of the best kept secrets in today’s changing marketplace, where freelance work is becoming more and more popular. Women looking for flexible work hours, diverse assignments, high earning power, options to travel or work from home in their PJs, may want to consider a career as a freelance court reporter. Although court reporters still make verbatim records of proceedings, their job is now performed on sleek paperless stenowriters with flip-top screens and laptop hookups, using digital technology to instantly translate notes into English. The freelance reporter is typically an independent contractor whose assignments are scheduled at different times and places every day: a deposition at a law office, a trial at the county courthouse, a municipal hearing at town hall, or a meeting in corporate offices. Those who love language and computers make good candidates for the newer fields that have created high

Q&A with Dr. Rosalie Curreri
Look As Young As You Feel! Dr. Rosalie Curreri answers your questions about aesthetic medicine By Nicole Canfora Lupo, photo by Dan Epstein
T
hrough the practice of aesthetic medicine, Dr. Rosalie Curreri has the pleasure of making her patients at Mecca Integrated Medical in Fairfield look and feel younger. Mecca’s boutique experience and soothing atmosphere combine to create a nurturing environment for clients interested in rejuvenating their mind and body, whether they’re coming in for a facial or interested in learning more about fillers and Botox for a younger-looking appearance. “We can’t halt aging,” says Dr. Curreri, “but we can put the brakes on and slow it down.” The lines on my face don’t reflect my younger woman within— I’m interested in fillers, but never got them before. What do I need to know?
didates for fillers—it depends where you are in the aging process. Every patient has different needs, and I discuss with them what will work best for their rejuvenation process.
Fillers of different mediums, such as Juvederm and Radiesse, are used by physicians to fill voids in the face caused by aging, gravity or weight loss. Placed strategically in the relevant areas of the face, they can recreate the fullness from the patient’s younger years. The aging process isn’t just about the loss of fat, but also of bone mass throughout the body, even in the face. Fillers soften those lines, and increase facial volume. We approximate the look of youth with fillers in the nasolabial folds, corners of the mouth and lips, along the lower jaw line, and cheek zones where hollowness first occurs. A liquid facelift restores the look of youth.
What will the physician ask me during our consultation?
Am I a candidate for Botox? Is it right for me?
For fillers, I recommend that my clients take arnica, an over-the-counter homeopathic medicine, a day prior to their procedure, and a few days post procedure. It’s useful with the healing of bruising and inflammation. One should discontinue the use of blood-

When being seen, tell the doctor about any medical conditions and any medications you’re taking, especially blood thinners, such as prescription Coumadin, aspirin, non-steroidals, and omega III. Avoiding blood thinners will help minimize bruising after fillers. I always ask about pregnancy and breast-feeding, as both procedures should be avoided during these times. If a patient has had complications with either Botox or fillers in the past, this should also be mentioned. How can I prepare for the procedure?
thinners 5 days prior to fillers. There is no preparation necessary for Botox. What can I expect during the actual session? Filler sessions involve the use of one to two pre-filled syringes of filler such as Juvederm. These syringes also contain lidocane to numb the injection sites. The patient and I work together to decide how much to use— I’ll evaluate and help suggest other areas of the face that might benefit from fillers or Botox and advise them of their options. The changes should be subtle—you’re going to come out of the procedure refreshed and seeing results. The effects of fillers are seen immediately; where as the full effect of Botox can take up to two weeks. What will I need to do after the procedure? Swelling comes with the territory, but the patient should help optimize the results of the injectibles. So you’ll want to avoid doing or taking anything that will cause a negative effect. I advise my patients not to exercise for 48 hours after “deep injections”—the tissues in the face are very fragile, and they should protect their new investment. After treatment with Botox, patients should keep their head elevated for a few hours, avoiding exercising, and hats or headbands across the forehad. Good skincare is a great compliment to your investment. Results of your treatment are optimized with good eating habits, hydration, and

BEAUTY in BALANCE:

r. Ablaza, a partner and Corporate Vice President of The Plastic Surgery Group in Montclair, addresses the questions about plastic surgery
that many of us have, but never have been able to ask. Here she offers answers to some of the field’s most basic questions and offers insight into the decision-making that goes into choosing to “go under the knife.”
I’m considering plastic surgery, but I want it to look as natural as possible. Can this be done? Our patients no longer want an “operated” or “done” look. Today, it is all about making changes that look natural. People are interested in being the best version of themselves. They would like to make changes on the outside that match the person that they feel on the inside, and they do not necessarily want to “announce” their surgery to the world. As we always say, “the best facelift goes unnoticed, but your younger, refreshed look never does.” e-mail

A Common Sense Approach to Cosmetic Surgery and Treatments Who is having plastic surgery? Women and men of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, professions and income levels are interested in taking advantage of the new techniques and recent advances in cosmetic surgery. It is difficult to find someone in a major metropolitan area or surrounding suburb who has not had or does not know of someone who has had some type of cosmetic surgery or treatment. Business people, artists, teachers, soccer moms and college students are some of the many types of people who have become regular consumers of cosmetic surgery procedures. The old days when only wealthy women in their 50s with a lot of time on their hands had plastic surgery are over. With the advent of new techniques and safe outpatient surgical facilities, we can now perform many different procedures efficiently in order to maximize change and minimize recovery time.
Do I need cosmetic surgery? There are many different reasons for people to entertain the idea of changing their appearance with surgery. Some of our patients say that having cosmetic enhancements was something that they had thought about or wanted for a long time, but it took some type of “trigger” event for them to decide to go through with it. In fact, there are a number of common scenarios that begin the thought process about cosmetic surgery. Relocating, milestone birthdays—30th, 40th, 50th and 60th—and events such as high school or college reunions and weddings often trigger the thought of altering one’s appearance. Of course, there are physical signs that may lead you to consider plastic surgery, often noticed for the first time when you see a photograph of yourself. The physical changes associated with aging, child-bearing and major weight loss gradually begin to become more obvious.
When is the right time to consider getting plastic surgery? It is common for people to consider facial or body enhancements after major life changes, such as the loss of a partner through separation divorce or death, and career change. We do not recommend having cosmetic surgery during times of emotional upheaval. There may even be occasions when we feel it is appropriate to have a patient’s mental health formally evaluated by a psychiatrist before surgery, to make sure your judgment is not clouded by your emotional state. When it comes to rejuvenation procedures, there is no specific formula or age when you “need” or “should have” certain procedures. Every person has a different awareness of body image and assigns a different degree of importance to appearance and physical characteristics. As a result, it is impossible to make a specific rule or develop a guideline for when certain flaws, deficiencies or perceived deformities are “worthy” of change with cosmetic surgery. When you have a feature that you do not like and want to change, whether it is a hook nose, a weak chin, small breasts or “heavy thighs,” it is reasonable to at least have a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon to help put your thoughts into perspective. There is no medical reason that should determine what time of year to have a cosmetic operation or treatment. The “best time” for each person will depend on the type of surgery, how long it takes to recover, lifestyle issues, type of work, work schedule and family commitments. It is not surprising that most people would like to recover from plastic surgery procedures in private. The fact is that many people do not want their family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to “know” about their surgery, even if they would like people to notice the changes afterward. As a result, they may choose times for surgery when there is less of a demand for social appearances.

Answering Your Questions About
Hypnotism Photo by Dan Epstein

What is hypnosis? Is it some kind of mind control? Hypnosis is a state of mind in which you are relaxed and focused, and your concentration is much higher than if you were awake. In hypnosis, we bypass the conscious mind (the critical thinking part). The suggestions that are made during hypnosis go directly to the subconscious mind, where thoughts and behaviors can be changed because of this very heightened awareness. When you are given a new suggestion about a behavior you want to change and if that suggestion is within your belief system, your subconscious mind accepts the new behavior as reality. When you are hypnotized, you feel very relaxed, and if you are like most people, you should remember everything that happened during the session.
Can anyone be hypnotized? Yes, in fact we are hypnotized every day without knowing it. Have you ever driven in your car and realized that you got to your destination without knowing it? You did so because you were in a trance or a state of self-hypnosis. Hypnosis works by identifying the negative behaviors you want to change and then replacing it with positive behaviors that can help you achieve your goals. The hypnotist is the facilitator that allows you to relax and gives your subconscious mind the ability to make the desired changes.
Is hypnosis dangerous?

No, hypnosis is not dangerous. Hypnosis involves just listening to the hypnotist’s words and music so that you can become very relaxed. It is a great tool to change your way of thinking and to make positive changes that you want to make but do not know how to make. The hypnotist knows how to gently release your mental blocks and fears and how to help you create a new inner belief that will set the wheels in motion for changes in the way you think, feel and behave.
Can you make me do things I do not want to do? Contrary to what many people believe, you are always in control during hypnosis. No one can make you do anything that is against your moral or ethical values. You have to want to make the suggested change in your behavior. Remember: there can be no hypnosis unless you hypnotize yourself.

r. David Greuner, a fellowship trained and board certified surgeon, is the resident vein expert at the Vein Centers of NYC Surgical Associates in New York City and West Caldwell. Through his practice, Dr. Greuner treats patients suffering from a variety of vascular conditions and issues, the most common of which are varicose veins. Varicose veins, which have long been seen as an unattractive and inevitable byproduct of pregnancy, are actually a medical issue, which can affect both sexes. Here, Dr. Greuner offers his i nsight on the causes and treatments of varicose veins.
with a vascular sonogram. This is performed to determine the location and the severity of the diseased vein (or veins as generally more than one are affected). After the initial sonogram, it is extremely important to discuss with the patient the risks and outcomes of their treatment options in great detail. A typical procedure is done in the office, using local anesthesia, and takes only about 20 minutes.
What causes varicose veins and whom do they affect?
There are several treatment options, but the one I use most commonly and I regard as the best technology available is called Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation (ERA). ERA, unlike vein stripping, the painful and highly invasive procedure formerly performed to correct varicose veins, is minimally invasive and almost painless. A catheter with a special tip is inserted into the diseased vein and, using radio frequency energy, the tip gradually heats the vein painlessly, closing the vein down and causing blood to be diverted to the nearest healthy vein, improving the circulation.
Varicose veins are caused by venous insufficiency, which means that the veins in the leg have trouble sending blood back to the heart. This is because valves in the leg veins, which normally prevent the blood from flowing backward, are damaged or missing. And, though the most common cause of varicose veins is, in fact, pregnancy, and 90% of patients are women between the ages 25 and 50 years of age, this condition is not gender-exclusive. Often, and especially in male patients, long hours spent standing on their feet can cause poor circulation, which, in turn, can cause the development of varicose veins. In some cases, though, individuals-both men and women alike—are simply genetically predisposed and develop these veins at an accelerated rate.
What is the procedure called and how does it work?
How long does it take to recover from ERA treatment and why should I consider it?
Because only local anesthesia is used in ERA, patients can go back to work the same day. Exercise is encouraged right away, and flying is allowed after two weeks, with the only post-surgical requirement being patients must wear surgical support stockings for two weeks following treatment. Although there can be an obvious cosmetic benefit to the treatment of varicose How do I determine if veins, treatment is far from being a cosmetic procedure. I’m a candidate for Venous insufficiency can cause leg cramping, swelling treatment? and fatigue, as well as itching and burning sensations. In addition, the longer the condition is left untreated, the At vein centers, more veins will become diseased, causing the patient the evaluation begins to feel worse after time. Anyone suffering with varicose veins is urged to seek medical treatment. There is no reason that you should have to live with this condition; Vein Centers at NYC Surgical Associates treatment is easy, painless and 555 Passaic Ave, Suite 10, West Caldwell generally covered by insurance.

I made my hair darker for fall and winter, but I’d like to start lightening it up for spring and be blond for summer. When should I start and what would be the process without damaging my hair? Great question! Too many people try to go from dark to blonde in just one shot. My advice is to always do it slowly while keeping the hair healthy. This year, we’ve seen so many versions of ombré, a highlighting process that removes some of the color from the midshaft to the end. My solution is to start with a soft faux ombré highlight from the middle of the strands to the ends, leaving some dark hair exposed. Next, the stylist should add some “panels” that start from the scalp through the end of the hair. This results in a soft, subtle blended look and a color that’s a good two shades lighter with no damage. It’s always important to do a deep conditioning treatment at the end of the process. It may take two to three visits to achieve your summer blonde, but it’s better than doing it all at once! The dry winter weather is great for my hair, but as summer approaches, it gets a frizzy texture and becomes too puffy. What’s the best process for taming my tresses? This is definitely the number-one question I get from clients this time of year. For me, the answer is

simple: a mild Keratin treatment for minor issues, and a stronger one for more severe cases. Keratin Express is a treatment lasting 8 to 12 weeks that is 100-percent humidity resistant. Your hair will be incredibly shiny and appear healthier than when you started. A regular Keratin treatment has the same great qualities as the Express but with longer-lasting results—it’ll last three to six months. Hair is made of keratin, so we are just putting hair back into hair! How do I know a new stylist is a good fit for me? Amazing question! More people should be concerned with this. For me, consultation is everything. I am very passionate about this, because the most important part of finding a stylist is that they “get” you—and that you “get” them. Remember: your visit to the salon is about you and your experience; too many stylists talk at you, and not to you. You both need to be on the same page. Make sure they are truly listening to you and your needs. You need to be able to picture the look they want to give you as they speak to you—and you need to feel comfortable enough to make changes. They should also listen to your ideas, and offer feedback to help create the best look for you. It’s important that you can work with your stylist, because it’s a relationship that can last a very long time!

ach week, in 150 countries at approximately 140,000 locations, nearly 14 million people take a Zumba® class. The workout, which truly is a party unto itself, pairs Latin-inspired dance moves, upbeat music and fitness to form an exercise class charged with energy, revelry and excitement. And with a lineup of “party” classes of varying intensity (some proven to burn upwards of 600 calories in an hour), Zumba® is appealing to both novice exercisers and fitness gurus alike.
As the classes continue to grow in popularity, local instructors have seen a rise in Zumba® as the go-to option for interactive and engaging parties, ladies nights out, fundraisers and events. Jen deLorenzi, a licensed instructor in the Caldwell area, teaches weekly classes at churches and dance studios or will set up a private class. “My classes might be 10 people or 100 people, ranging from 10-80 years of age. Each class is unique, but it is always a party,” she says. “I think there is tremendous power in dance, music and movement.” She has recently played host to events benefitting breast cancer research and Hurricane Sandy relief. The JCC MetroWest Community Center in West Orange now holds approximately 15 regularly scheduled classes each week, all of which are open to members and guests of the center. According to Shannon Koenig, the center’s Group Exercise Director, the past several years have shown sustained interest in this fitness phenomenon. “Our classes have a maximum capacity of 30 people, and I think it’s safe to say that even our smallest classes have at least 15 people,” states Koenig. The JCC MetroWest Community Center recently hosted their first ever ZumbaThon®, a two-hour event that offered dancing set to a live DJ, smoothies, six instructors and four raffle prizes—including gift certificates for massages and personal training. Over 100 people attended the event, which Koenig and her colleagues feel was hugely successful. “Everyone had a really good time and we look forward to the possibility of holding this event next year,” Koenig said.
