She is a certified member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, American Dental Association, NJ Dental Association, International Team for Implantology and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Stone is a true entrepreneur and was at the forefront of women in dentistry when she began her career in 1982. She was quick to see the need for a new kind of dentist, a doctor empathetic and compassionate enough to work with patients who experience significant stress and anxiety when visiting the dentist. Her office provides stateof-the-art techniques and changes patients’ lives one smile at a time. She loves giving patients “the smile of their dreams.”

Ariella Cianni Ariella Cianni, one of the talented stylists at Shag86 of Little Falls, recalls that even from the very first day of work in May of 2004 as an assistant at the salon—the first at which she had ever worked—she was eager to be “the best of everything.” Today, she clearly has achieved that goal, honing her skills over the years side-by-side with the best stylists in the field in cutting, color, styling and more. During her career, she has trained with professionals at industry leaders such as Goldwell, Wella, Arrojo, Redken, Paul Mitchell and many others. “I still continue my education to this day,” she says, “and look forward to learning new things every time I go for training.” Once, when asked what she would be if she had the opportunity to change her career, she quickly responded, “I would never take that opportunity, because I love what I do so much, it would sadden me if I didn’t have this work in my life anymore.” Summing up, she says, “it’s the best feeling, knowing that my talent can change the way clients feel about themselves and having them feel their very best when they leave my chair.”

Say My Name New Jersey photographer, Charles Sykes, has spent 20+ years covering celebrities, events and news. A chance sighting of a bright, neon sign of his daughter’s name, Rose, was the inspiration behind taking pictures of thousands of signs and letters to create personalized artwork. SignYourName.net, offers everything from lunchboxes, to pillows and posters customized with any name or phrase.

Creativity Caravan Meet the Flockers Perhaps you know New Jersey’s state bird is the American Goldfinch; but do you know what it looks like or how it sings? The Audubon Society has partnered with manufacturer, Wild Republic, to make identifying the Goldfinch, and many of its’ fine-feathered friends, fun with a line of authentic plush toys. A quick squeeze of the belly, and you can hear each bird’s song or call, recorded by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

If you’ve ever had a pang of jealousy when you drop your kids off for an art class, take a look at the offerings at Creativity Caravan in Montclair. At the Letter Lounge, an assortment of vintage typewriters and a wide variety of pens, stationery and stamps, are available for oldfashioned letter writing. Social Sketch is a collaborative evening; one person starts a drawing or collage and then passes it to another person to add to. Founders, artists, and poets, Amy Tingle and Maya Stein, also lead inschool programs and offer “Poetry on Demand” at private events. The tandem poets invite your guests to give them a word or phrase and then instantly write them a poem, using a vintage typewriter.

Cultivating Healthy Alternatives A garden of earthly delights takes root in Newark

By Louise B. Hafesh, photos by Dan Epstein

Never underestimate the power of a woman with a vision. Back in 2009, charged with developing wellness initiatives for the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC) and surrounding community, Barbara Mintz, MS, RD set her sights on instituting programs that would help keep people healthy and avert disease, rather than just focusing on treating illnesses after the fact. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and marketing, a Masters in Nutrition, and having held leadership roles in business and health care industries, the RWJ/Barnabas vice president who today oversees Healthy Living and Community Engagement, was more than up to the challenge.

Losing no time in launching enterprising neighborhood projects that focus on farming and garden ventures; health and wellness in general, Mintz assembled a dedicated, in-house team—even brought in Lorraine Gibbons, a local pioneer in the development of hydroponic gardens and, thinking outside the box, her department made her-story. “We are a group of women who work collaboratively and without ego, who respect each other and create a safe environment in which to share our collective talents and ideas,” Mintz explains the makeup of the power force that would transform an empty lot across from NBIMC into a thriving urban garden and farmers market, which has blossomed into a groundbreaking, hydroponic farming enterprise, The Beth Greenhouse. By all accounts lauded as the first of its kind in New Jersey, The Greenhouse sprang into being this May from

very practical concerns as Mintz points out: “This kind of work is particularly important in a city like Newark, where many residents battle health issues like obesity and high blood pressure; which can benefit from a diet full of fresh vegetables,” she says. “The program is helping people connect health to behavior and getting them to understand that the decisions they make around food, exercise, to name only a few, will help determine their health status. There is so much more, but I believe that offering a greenhouse in the middle of the South ward of Newark that offers healthy food, nutrition education, job training speaks for itself.” Nothing succeeds like success… Revealing that the idea for the venture stemmed from the partnership created with Gibbons, Mintz defines some of the benefits of employing organic farming techniques that use water rather than soil and represent a bright future in urban areas where there is no farmland. “Grow time is faster, plants are larger and usually harvested quicker,” she advises. “These types of greenhouses can be set up in small vacant lots and a ‘food desert’ like Newark can grow enough food to feed the city.” As for NBIMC’s greenhouse, it is expected to yield approximately 5,000 pounds of organic vegetables, fruits and herbs annually to benefit residents of Newark and suburbs, (over 600 pounds of food have been donated locally) with reasonably priced produce sold at the hospital’s on-site market.

Barbara Mintz Summing up the medical center’s role, Darrell K. Terry, Sr., MHA, MPH, FACHE President and CEO of NBIMC and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey had this to say. “Preventative care is a large part of our mission. We want to improve the overall health of the communities we serve and initiatives such as The Beth Greenhouse allow us to do this by offering local residents a simple and convenient way to develop a healthier lifestyle.” Tagging onto that, Mintz concludes: “My work has changed from taking care of the sick to helping people prevent disease and maintain wellness. For me, success is helping our neighbor and making a difference in someone’s life. If you can change one thing that makes the world a little better one person at a time then you have done good things.” Nothing can stop the power of a woman with that kind of vision! www.newarkbeth.org

ON THE MOVE

Three Outstanding Local Innovators Expand Business Boundaries By Janis Hashe, photos by Dan Epstein

Today’s “business woman” has moved far beyond the ‘80s stereotype of the business man in a skirt. Women in business today are bringing their own style of savvy to a wide range of fields—and nowhere more so than right here in our area. In this issue, North Jersey Woman profiles Keri Leonia Knowles, Stephanie J. Rosen and Deborah Engel, all ideal examples of local women on the move.

Breaking Through

I

love the nature of production challenges that the restaurant and event catering business offers,” says Keri Leonia Knowles. One of the thirdgeneration of family members involved in Knowles Hospitality, she is director of development for a suite of world-renowned restaurants and banquet facilities that include The Manor, Highlawn Pavilion and Pleasantdale Chateau, all in West Orange, and the Ram’s Head Inn, located in Galloway. “Today, the majority of customers who make decisions about where to dine or hold events are women,” she explains. “My grandparents, Harry and Doris Knowles, founded The Manor in 1956. Women in my family ran a restaurant before then, the Robin Hood Inn. By the time I joined, only men were making decisions about the business.”

Keri’s moment came while she was completing her master’s degree overseas at the worldrenowned Aalto University’s School of Art, Design and Architecture in Helsinki Finland, one of the design capitals of the world. Learning that a major renovation was being planned at The Manor—the family’s 20-acre, Four Diamond property—she saw a perfect opportunity to become involved, using her project management skills. “I saw many areas where I could help bring a gender balance back to our family operation.” Her perspective manifests itself in both big and small decisions. As a first step, she designed and managed renovations of the bridal suites at both Highlawn Pavilion and The Manor, continuing today continued on 20

with such diverse projects as guiding the company onto a team-oriented task-management platform. She pushed the Manor’s renovation toward accessible restrooms and lobbies to meet Americans with Disability standards. “I then took control of the ballroom addition, managing the multimillion-dollar project to completion within budget,” states Keri. Not one to sit still, Keri has plenty of ideas to bring a modern, up-to-date sensibility to the business table for the future. “I plan to continue promoting the company identity of Knowles Hospitality, expanding our farm-to-table capacity and expanding the entertaining in our bars with a calendar of events,” she says. Currently, Keri is working on a design to renovate The Dome, the iconic glass-enclosed nightclub atop The Manor. “There is a thrill in setting the stage for life events and cultivating a team of people who love being in the service industry.”

Cosmetic medicine entails both non-invasive and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. “When you have aesthetic procedures performed by a certified and experienced practitioner who performs them all day, every day, you reduce the risks of having a poor outcome,” she explains. “Since I work side by side with board-certified plastic surgeons, we blend our talents to provide a comprehensive, safe and prudent approach to patient care.” At an early age, Stephanie was influenced by her father, Dr. Allen D. Rosen, one of the country’s premiere plastic surgeons and founder of The Plastic Surgery Group. “I watched my father rebuild the physical and emotional ravages of trauma victims and change their lives,” she says. “How someone looks has such a tremendous impact on how they feel and relate to others. The psychosocial benefits of looking your best at any given age are extraordinary.“ As a physician assistant, Stephanie was trained in all aspects of medicine, but began specializing in cosmetic medicine in Manhattan after fellowships in dermatology and plastic surgery. Today, due to New Jersey legislation 20

that passed in early 2016, Stephanie can perform all noninvasive treatments for facial and body rejuvenations such as fillers, Botox®, laser resurfacing, micro needling, PRP for wrinkles, Ulthera and radio frequency for skin tightening, Cellfina for cellulite and CoolSculpting for fat removal, to name just a few. Asked how her experience in other areas of medicine shaped her approach to patient care today, she responds, “Bringing experience from other areas of medicine allows me to improve patients’ safety. Since I spend full time doing cosmetic medicine, my finger is on the pulse of all the newest procedures. This means understanding patient expectations and knowing how to do the right thing for the right person at the right time.” Stephanie is Board-certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). She is a fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, an affiliate member of the New York and New Jersey State Societies of Physician Assistants and is dual-licensed in both New York and New Jersey. She has given presentations at the New York State Society of Physician Assistants’ Annual Conference.

Deborah Engel

Reinventing the Workplace

D

eborah Engel is the founder of Work and Play in South Orange, the first co-working space with child care in northern New Jersey. The facility is a place where freelancers, creatives, those developing businesses and telecommuters can work without the distractions at home. Members who want work/life flexibility can drop off their young children downstairs, where they will play and discover through the special child-led curriculum.’’ “I wanted to create a work/life solution for people like me,” she says. Deborah first experienced the working mother’s dilemma when her first child was born in 2010. Her demanding PR job in New York meant that she saw her daughter under an hour each day. When her second daughter was born in 2012, she took a four-month maternity leave and did some hard thinking. “What do I want to do…what’s the right formula for me?” she remembers asking herself. She had seen an article talking about “co-working,”— and like many entrepreneurs, took a leap of faith. “We found an old building two miles from home and converted it into an open-environment workspace,” she says. “What’s great about the space is that there are two floors, so while children are playing downstairs, the parents working upstairs never know they are there.”

“People working out of home offices often find themselves craving connection,” Deborah says. She has been delighted at the number of collaborations that have developed between members of Work and Play. The facility features a communal workspace, private offices and meeting rooms, and also sponsors special events and such professional development classes as a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) workshop. Currently, Work and Play has about 45 members. The childcare program has recently expanded to accept more children from the wait list. The success of Work and Play has led to the development of a second office space in South Orange. Deborah believes community need will drive the creation of places like Work and Play, and she envisions possibly franchising the concept. “The [work] trend is toward independent contractors,” she says. Millennials especially want more freedom, and many people feel that family is the most important [component of their lives.] It really does ‘take a village,’” Deborah says.

Come meet WOR-NY Radio’s

Joan Herrmann

R

adio personality, author and motivational speaker Joan Herrmann will be at the North Jersey Woman expo with her Good Life team to discuss the power of positive thoughts. When Joan was 46, her 23year marriage ended and her mother and sister passed away leaving her the sole surviving member of her nuclear family. After her tremendous loss and pain, she experienced a “rebirth” that was the beginning of a new perspective on how life impacts our mind, body and spirit. She set out to provide information that connects the dots between these components. In doing so, she now educates, inspires and empowers others

to embrace change rather than fear or hide from it on her Saturday night WORNY radio show, Change Your Attitude… Change Your Life. Each week Joan interviews and shares best practices from some of the most influential and inspirational people in the world, such as Deepak Chopra and Dr. John Gray. Joan also publishes a monthly digital magazine, Change Your Attitude…Change Your Life: 24/seven, which is distributed to thousands worldwide and features articles written by her Good Life team. The team offers expert tips on strategies for personal and professional development, improved health and self-empowerment. From wellness and business experts to dating

Joan Herrmann and parenting coaches, the magazine includes something for everyone. Joan and her team believe that knowledge is power and they look forward to connecting with the North Jersey Woman Expo attendees to discuss the tools needed for personal growth.

Local Author to Unveil “Jersey” Based Book at Expo

Lisa Marie Latino

By Katrina Musto

L

isa Marie Latino does it all. The Montclair State University graduate and CEO/Executive Producer of Fairfield-based Long Shot Productions, will be at the North Jersey Woman Expo November 15th at Mayfair Farm discussing her latest project: her book, Ten Years Later. Ten Years Later follows one woman’s journey to achieve her dreams while learning to throw caution to the wind. Single, still living with overbearing ItalianAmerican parents and feeling like every day is Groundhog Day, Carla D’Agostino gets wind of her ten-year high school reunion. The search for love, a prominent career, and the perfect body all seems

out of reach until a chain of unexpected events show her that all she ever wanted was within reach. Finding time to write became trying. “It was difficult to break away from my day-to-day operations,” she explained. “I would tell the world I was away on business and get a hotel room for four days at a time so I could 100% focus.” After repeating this five times, she emerged with a manuscript. “I’ve always wanted to write a book, and the rollercoaster ride of my 20’s unleashed a passion about the subject manner, which is finding your place in the world after being in a safe cocoon (i.e. your parents house and school).”

Latino also co-launched HipNew Jersey.com, an online lifestyle program featuring trends around the Garden State and has appeared on TLC’s “Cake Boss.” Be sure to stop by the Expo and meet this extraordinary young woman!

r. Valerie J. Ablaza, a partner and Vice President of The Plastic Surgery Group, answers questions about surgical consultations and the value of computer imaging. How often should patients consult with their surgeon before a procedure? It is a good idea to return to the surgeon’s office for at least one additional visit after the initial meeting to ensure that all your questions have been answered and you completely understand the plan.

How is computer imaging for surgical procedures done? Using the Canfield Mirror Imaging System, we take digital photographs during the consultation and then we can digitally make modifications of your 3D image on the computer to give you a general idea of what you may look like after surgery. The 3D imaging is especially useful for breast enhancement and lifting as well as facial rejuvenation and nasal reshaping.

Why is computer imaging more effective than showing patients before and after pictures? Before and after pictures of other people are very helpful in understanding the effects of surgical procedures, but since every person has a different body shape, skin type, and bone structure, it is difficult to draw conclusions about your own outcome from these pictures. Computer imaging is meant to help you visualize the changes in your own face and body that may be possible.

Valerie J. Ablaza, M.D. Plastic Surgery Group

37 North Fullerton Avenue, Montclair 973.233.1933 www.PlasticSurgeryGroupNewJersey.com

In what way does using this technology during consultations help with meeting patient expectations?

The ability to simulate changes following surgery and also show actual changes based on real data will better help us discuss expected outcomes. It gives us another excellent opportunity to have an in-depth discussion about the goals and expectations of surgery. Of course as the images are simulations only, there is no guarantee about final results but the 3D images provide another valuable tool in the evaluation process. 42

Fall Trends in Hair Care

riella Cianni holds the title of Prestigious Stylist at Shag 86 Salon in Little Falls; she knows that hair care is an ever-changing field. Here, she talks to North Jersey Woman about the latest in color, cut, and conditioning. Are you seeing any trends in hair color this fall? Absolutely; rose gold is a major trend. It is very pretty and can be adapted to any hair color. The rose can be any shade; the yellow in the gold will brighten or soften it, depending on the underlying color. If I’m working on blonde hair, the rose will have more of a blush shade. If I’m putting it on a brunette, the rose will be more reddish, even coppery. This can be done in just one session. Like any color, it needs to be maintained once a month or it will fade. There are so many variations of both rose and gold, so this is a great solution for women who want a change but aren’t ready to go darker.

Is there a comparable trend in hair cut? Actually, the biggest difference between this fall and previous ones is that there isn’t a major change. I expect to see new cuts in the spring, but for now, they are similar to what they were last fall. I see a lot of hair right below the collarbone with a simple wave, and bangs are definitely not in.

Have you seen any impressive new hair care products? Yes, a couple. Color-depositing shampoo is big right now; it’s a glaze and a shampoo in one. A glaze is a non-ammonia product that acts like a manicure topcoat: It closes the hair cuticle so that the hair really shines. A lot of my clients are taking it home to preserve their hair color longer. The other major new product is Olaplex. This is a treatment that actually reconnects the protein bonds in hair that have been broken by repeated coloring, straightening, perming—pretty much any chemical treatment. It needs to be done at the salon over at least three sessions, but it’s worth it.

hen a couple with children makes the decision to separate and possibly divorce, they are faced with learning how to co-parent while living apart. Navigating the changes in the relationship and living situation is difficult, but there are laws in New Jersey that can assist in the predivorce process. Karolina Dehnhard, Esq. of Budd Larner, P.C. in Short Hills answers questions parents may ask themselves at the start of a new and different life.

What do you tell your clients is the most important factor in successfully co-parenting during the separation phase of divorce? Be reasonable with each other and keep the best interests of the child at the forefront. Be sure that personal issues with the former spouse are set aside. Although disagreements will arise, it is important to assess the situation and “pick your battles.”

Do you advise mediation as a means to easing children’s emotional trauma before divorce? I believe the very statute that governs custody determinations in New Jersey can best answer this question. Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 9:2-4(d), voluntary custody agreements between parents will be honored unless contrary to the best interests of the child(ren). This is based upon the principle that “No stranger in a judicial robe, however able and well-motivated he or she may be, is equipped to make a decision as valid as the parents working together might make.” Tahan v. Duquette, 259 N.J. Super. 328, 336 (App. Div. 1992). What this means is that it is better for parents to try to reach agreement on what is best for their children in the context of divorce rather than involve the Court.

Can child custody agreements be put in place during separation? Yes, very often, either by agreement of court order, pendente lite arrangements are put in place at the onset of the divorce. The goal during this period is to maintain the marital status quo. However, if the situation is one where one parent has moved out of the marital home and the family unit has been broken down, then a parenting time schedule is put in place to ensure that each parent has time with the child(ren).

Karolina Dehnhard, Esq. Budd Larner, P.C.,

150 John F. Kennedy Parkway, Short Hills, NJ 07078 973-379-4800 • kdehnhard@buddlarner.com A courtesy consultation is offered to North Jersey Woman readers

Are spouses entitled child support during a separation? Child support is the right of the child, so parents cannot agree to waive it. These orders most often include financial responsibilities for the ongoing maintenance of marital expenses and the needs of the children. The court would calculate child support utilizing the Child Support Guidelines which factors in the income of both parents, the amount of overnights the child spends with each parent and other expenses such as the cost of health insurance incurred and work-related childcare expenses.

What is the most common concern you hear from couples regarding their children when they begin the process of divorce? Parents often express great concern about the impact the divorce will have on their children emotionally, developmentally, and psychologically. It is important that parents do not place their children in the crossfire of the unraveling of their marriage. This is most important in the context of one parent embarking on a new relationship. It is natural for the other parent to try to “shield” the child(ren) from meeting this “other” person, and this can often manifest into taking unreasonable positions. The better approach, and one that will lend itself to the ability for divorced or divorcing couples to continue to co-parent, is to express their respective concerns and to set some expectations regarding the involvement of the new person, but to be open to the idea that each party will eventually move on. Of course, we recommend to our clients that they work for their mental health professionals to agree on the best approach in making the introduction, especially when children are younger in age.

What Exactly is

SLEEP APNEA? Is snoring dangerous or simply a nuisance? About 50% of all adults snore. Although most people consider snoring nothing more than a nuisance to their partner, it can actually be a sign of sleep apnea. It has been estimated that 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea with the majority of cases going undiagnosed. If left untreated sleep apnea can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity and diabetes. So what exactly are snoring and sleep apnea?

What is sleep apnea and what causes it? When you sleep the muscle in your throat relax which causes a narrowing of your throat. Normally this narrowing

ADV I S OR

N

E

does not impede air flow but with snoring there is a partial blockage of the airway which causes that distinctive noisy sound. With sleep apnea this blockage goes a step further and the body is not able to breathe in enough oxygen. Once the levels of oxygen in your blood drop to a certain level your brain kicks in and wakes you to signal breathing to resume, this usually results in a choking or gasping sound. As unbelievable as it may be this cycle usually goes unnoticed and you don’t realized these episodes happened during the night. One of the most common signs of obstructive sleep apnea is loud and chronic snoring. Even if the breathing pauses to indicate sleep apnea are not present, snoring still can reduce the quality of your sleep and lead to many of the same health consequences as sleep apnea. Poor sleep quality can cause daytime fatigue, irritability and can even put your at higher risk for getting into an accident while driving.

Are men and women equally likely to suffer from it? Although everyone can be effected by snoring and sleep apnea men are at a higher risk than women. Obesity also plays a role as those who are overweight have a higher risk as well. People with narrow airways and large tonsils are also at greater risk. Smokers are three times more likely to have obstructive sleep apnea than non-smokers. Bruxism is a condition where you grind and clench your teeth. People who suffer from sleep bruxism, when you clench or grind your teeth while sleeping, are more likely to have other sleep disorders like snoring and sleep apnea. Grinding your teeth can lead to damage to your teeth as well as headaches and facial pain.

Can anything be done to treat these problems?

Dr. Linda Stone Gentle Caring Dentistry

201 South Livingston Avenue, Suite 2C, Livingston, NJ 973-994-3112 www.gentlecaringdentistry.com

By this point you are probably thinking of at least one person in your life who snores or grinds their teeth. The good news is there are many different types of oral appliances to address these issues. Custom fitted mouth guards are designed to keep teeth separated to avoid damage from bruxism. There are also oral appliances that are able to hold the lower jaw forward to allow the airway to stay open. Oral appliances are a great option for loud snoring and mild to moderate cases of sleep apnea. Even for severe cases of obstructive sleep apnea, where a patient cannot tolerate a traditional CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) device an oral appliance is now an option. A good night’s sleep is now possible for both the snorer and their disgruntled spouse!

Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa

Mirror Lake Inn Main House

Have no fear… there’s a wondrous nearby retreat in All about the View… A courteous and fast the beautiful Adirondacks that with fall foliage still in swing and holiday festivities about to begin, is a prime lure and perfect cure for what ails the working wounded.

Escape to New York… In just that frame of

mind, my husband and I cleared our schedules, signed onto a Getaway at Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa and headed north to relax, refresh, and rejuvenate. Along the way, de-stressing as we drove past lush mountain scenery; picturesque streams, by the time we entered the quaint village of Lake Placid, we were back to our good old selves.

check in had us ensconced in our lodgings minutes after arrival. With a sunroom overlooking the lake, spectacular Adirondack peaks as backdrop and a king-size poster bed, we were in our glory. Nevertheless, a sublime fall day and lots of activities and amenities at our disposal, we lost no time in stashing our bags and exploring the lay of the land.

First things first... the grounds (seven acres) are

a gardener’s delight with a palette of colorful blooms at every turn. Spying two lakeside chairs on the deck of the Cottage Café, we settled in, ordered a light alfresco lunch and wine spritzers, and mesmerized by nature’s bounty, took in the general splendor. Later on, strolling the 3-mile paved walkway that circles the lake, we did our best to work off a few calories before taking on a water excursion via complimentary paddleboats, and then rounding out the day with a game of giant checkers on the lawn. Great fun!

With dinner and breakfast included in our package, that first night we opted for a casual evening meal at Taste Bistro & Bar, binging on the likes of naturally-raised pot roast, signature fried Brussels sprouts, amazing Bistro fries—comfort food for sure. Afterwards, retiring to the library, we topped off the night savoring coffee and conversation by a cozy fire.

Pampered states… On day two, well rested and raring to go after a wonderful buffet breakfast, we headed to the Inn’s celebrated spa and our separate ways. My service, a facial, was pure indulgence. Not only did my therapist custom tailor a regimen for my face and skin type, but also she devoted a good 15 minutes to my neck, arms and hands. I dare say, my skin and I were both glowing! As for my hubby, reconnecting after his Swedish massage while walking to town for therapy of the retail kind, he waxed poetic about his experience the entire way.

Back at home base, in time for a bon voyage dinner at The View, Lake Placid’s only AAA FourDiamond “Exceptional” rated restaurant, we were wowed! In a stylish, romantic setting (dress casual chic), we dined on Rib Eye Roast (my husband) and Free Range Chicken (my selection), both cooked to perfection. Compliments to executive chef, Jarrad Lang for crating a wonderfully diverse regional menu with such flavorful accouterments as mushroom duxelles, potato pave, baby fennel, and shaved black truffle, to name a few. The crowning glory – no flour chocolate cake! Lake Placid is rich in Olympic history. Having hosted two Winter Games (in 1923 and 1980), it offers many active opportunities for current day sport enthusiasts, not the least being hiking, bobsledding, ice-skating, or even riding the chairlift to the base of the Olympic Ski Jumps. The Resort itself is “home” for two-time Olympic skier and medalist Andrew Weibrecht, whose parents Ed & Lisa Weibrecht bought the inn in the mid 1970’s introduced the spa in 1990 and undertook a major $4 million renovation project this past year. That all adds up to a spatacular Adirondack Adventure! Mirror Lake Inn 77 Mirror Lake Drive, Lake Placid, New York www.mirrorlakeinn.com Louise B.
