he trees are aglow with red and orange flaming leaves, the evening stars are brighter and there’s a chill in the air. With fall in full bloom, so is this edition of North Jersey Woman. Inside you will meet Kerry Glass, founder of Memories Live, a non-profit that helps those facing terminal illness create a movie for family and loved ones that celebrates their life. This issue also offers a roundup of expert advise from some very savvy professionals with solutions and insight in their field of expertise. Mark your calendar for November 6 to attend the semi-annual North Jersey Woman Expo at Mayfair Farms in West Orange. The Expo will have something for everyone… massage stations, mini-makeovers, demonstrations, giveaways, shopping—jewelry, clothing, essential oils, chocolate; and back by popular demand, The Spirituality Room. Beginning on page 23 you can see a sneak preview of the vendors that will be attending and what services and/or products they will be showcasing. As with all of our past events, the Expo will benefit Jersey Battered Women’s Services (JBWS), a full service agency that assists victims of domestic violence. Grab your friends and join us at the Expo. I’d love to meet you!

Fun with Robots From Rosie the Robot in The Jetsons to R2D2 in Star Wars, kids have been fascinated with robots. Now, instead of just watching them on the screen, kids can have a hands-on experience with them. At Robot Revolution in Summit, kids from grades 3-12 can learn how to build and program robots and compete in robotic competitions.

Scan and Repeat We all love to look at photos but a massive collection of photo albums and boxes (and boxes) of loose pictures takes up too much space! On the next rainy day or while you’re watching TV, get a handle on the clutter. For albums, try Hammacher Schlemmer’s Rapid Photo Album Scanner. The device turns photos into digital images without having to remove them from an album, even if they are under a plastic sleeve. For loose photos, the answer could be in the palm of your hand. There are many apps for both Android and iPhones that are available for less than $10– and many are free. Some of the most popular are Google’s PhotoScan (free but limited features), Photomyne (scan multiple photos at a time, $4.99) and Evernote Scannable (scans all types of documents as well as photos, free).

Sweet, Savory & Social Whether you want to gather some friends to share a Tapas of S’mores, Milk + Cookies and Dessert Kebabs or a savory plate of Buffalo Cauliflower Bites; Roasted Beets + Herbed Goat Cheese, Vanillamore Dessert Kitchen is Montclair’s newest hang-out spot. The inventive concept, cooked up by CIA-trained pastry chef/owner, Risa Magid Boyer, brings foodies together around a 12-seat U-shaped table for a bite and entertains with a six-screen video installation along side works by local artists.

Inside Plastic Surgery with

Dr. Scott Spiro By Jackie Sawyer

S

cott Spiro, MD, FACS, Diplomate, American Board of Plastic Surgery is a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in cosmetic surgery of the breast, body contouring, facial aesthetic surgery, and breast cancer reconstruction. He employs Concepts of Careful Individualized Planning and Professional Artistic Background to obtain the most aesthetic results possible for each patient. A fixture in West Orange for 21 years, Dr. Spiro’s office is located at 101 Old Short Hills Road, Suite 510 in West Orange, across the street from Saint Barnabas Medical Center, and includes a seven-person staff with two full-time RNs and a full-time aesthetician.

What do you like best about being a plastic surgeon? I enjoy establishing relationships with patients and helping them achieve their goals. It is also rewarding to know I am making a difference in my patient’s breast cancer management through reconstruction. Making a positive impact in my patient’s lives is very gratifying. I especially like that I can do all of this while blending art, science, and technical skills.

What are the most asked about and performed procedures in your office? The most asked about procedures include: Mommy Makeover, Facial Rejuvenation, Eyelid, and Facelift; Revision Breast Surgery from Previous Mastectomy Reconstruction or Previous Cosmetic Breast Surgery; Breast Augmentation; Liposuction; and Rhinoplasty.

What does a “Mommy Makeover” comprise and what is the reason women want this procedure?

When doing a Mommy Makeover, I look to restore a woman’s body after child bearing. The goal is to reverse the atrophy and/or sag of breasts, and weakening of the abdominal wall with skin excess or laxity. The combination asked for most often is abdominoplasty and repair of abdominal wall (diastasis/hernias) combined with breast augmentation, lift, reduction and sometimes liposuction and even buttock fat grafting. Cooperman Family Pavilion to Usher in New Era of Family-Centered Care

S

aint Barnabas Medical Center, a flagship facility of RWJBarnabas Health, unveiled a soaring, five-story, 241,000 square-foot addition to the Livingston medical center on September 6. Saint Barnabas Medical Center, renowned for its high-quality clinical care and medical services, received a $25 million gift from Leon and Toby Cooperman, which provided the catalyst for the construction of the vast expansion to the medical center, named the Cooperman Family Pavilion. “The extraordinary Cooperman Family Pavilion exemplifies the remarkable care that is provided at this award-winning medical center,” said Barry H. Ostrowsky, President and Chief Executive Officer of RWJBarnabas Health. The beautiful, natural light-infused building reflects evidence-based approaches to promoting healing and improving care. The pavilion encompasses 114 new private rooms; an expansive 56-bassinet Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU); many of the outpatient diagnostic services; a central registration area; and a same-day surgery suite. A new, threestory parking garage also has been built to accommodate more than 400 vehicles. Patients, family members, community members, physicians and staff all provided their suggestions and input design details include curb-free showers to prevent falls, acoustical materials to

lessen noise and hybrid operating suites that allow surgeons to transfer easily from minimally invasive to open procedures. The NICU has a series of single rooms in a pod design that allows families to bond with their baby within a few steps of nearby medical staff. There is also two new family rooms that offer parents the opportunity to “sleep over” and care for their baby within the hospital environment prior to their discharge. For more information on the Cooperman Family Pavilion, visit www.rwjbhinfo.org/Cooperman.aspx?furl=cooperman. One-on-One Teaching— AN ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL SCHOOLING

“I have worked in education for 25 years and I have never met a group of teachers more willing to put children first…”

F

usion Academy is a revolutionary private middle and high school where positive relationships unlock academic potential. We are a non-traditional community of learning with the smallest class size possible: one student and one teacher per classroom. This allows us to personalize and customize curriculum for each student’s unique strengths, interests, and learning style. We are also able to personalize scheduling; students may enroll at any time (even during the summer) and take classes at a time of day that works best for them. Our supportive staff and campus environment provide a safe space for students to flourish emotionally, socially, and academically. It includes a state-of-the-art recording studio and a mixed-media art studio for students to express their creativity. Our Homework Café® is where students complete all their homework before they leave for the day with help and supervision from a teacher. Classes are offered at three levels: essential, college prep, and honors. From algebra to yoga and everything in between, we have over 250 classes to choose from. Students can enroll full-time, take classes for credit, or utilize our tutoring services. In addition to academics, we partner with outside therapeutic professionals to support students’ emotional health and help foster a balanced life.

– Melissa, a parent at our Princeton, NJ campus While it’s impossible to put our students into categories, we generally serve students with the following backgrounds: ADHD, accelerated/gifted learners, dyslexia, mild learning differences, social challenges, school anxiety, or students with challenging schedules. Students who attend Fusion have one thing in common: traditional school isn’t working. Fusion has four campuses in the state of New Jersey: Fusion Englewood, Fusion Montclair, Fusion Morristown, and Fusion Princeton. wMelissa, a parent at our Princeton, NJ campus, says, “I have worked in education for 25 years and I have never met a group of teachers more willing to put children first. Theo has blossomed into a young man I only dreamed I might someday meet. You are all helping him heal and that is allowing my whole family to heal.” Connect with us at FusionAcademy.com to learn more and speak with a Director of Admissions and Outreach. Fall 2017

LASER AND COSMETIC DENTISTRY:

Lives Forever Changed By Christine S. Maxwell

T

he New Jersey Center for Laser and Cosmetic Dentistry in West Caldwell knows that a beautiful smile makes a lasting impression. Now in its 25th year, Joseph DalBon, DMD, its founder, has established a successful dental practice with more than 2,000 patients. Remaining true to the original mission, DalBon states, “Every patient is important and we take the time to ensure the best possible treatment.”

Women make up approximately 60 percent of the patients. Soft tissue treatments are popular among women and may prevent ailments that affect women in different stages of life. Periodontal treatment is paramount for pregnant women. “Gum disease in pregnant women can lead to lower birth weight of babies,” explains DalBon. “Women also need gum care to lessen or to alleviate problems of heart disease and diabetes.”

While the patient’s care remains a top priority, cutting edge technology and dental treatment ensures minimal pain and lessens anxiety among patients. Sedation dentistry helps with these patient concerns. Dental work is completed while the patient sleeps. A Board-Certified Anesthesiologist is utilized to administer safely the anesthesiology to patients.

Cosmetic dentistry is in demand as women return to the workforce or establish new relationships. Patients find the procedures life affirming. The confidence inspired by beautiful, healthy teeth can change a patient’s entire outlook on life. Remarks DalBon, “Lives are forever changed after receiving proper dental care.”

In addition, laser dentistry lessens pain and fear during treatment. One of the foremost dental laser specialists in the nation, DalBon uses this tool to replace the use of dental drills and needles. “I have not used a needle on a child patient for a cavity in over ten years,” he says. After effects are minimal, and adults may return to work immediately without the numbness caused by needles. Cosmetic dentistry is a large part of the practice. Invisalign orthodontics gently aligns the teeth without the use of obvious wires and brackets. Similarly, patients may choose teeth whitening procedures, porcelain veneers, and other toothenhancing treatments. “Teeth whitening is the most effective way to remove years from a patients’ appearance,” he says.

KERRY GLASS

CREATING LEGACIES OF LOVE And on that foundation, Memories Live, a registered 501c3 non-profit, was born.

By Louise B. Hafesh, photography by Dan Epstein

I

n 2010 after learning that a local woman had passed away from cancer, leaving behind her husband and two young children ages 2 and 4, Millburn resident Kerry Glass had a nagging thought: “It struck me that her kids would never know the sound of their mom’s voice, her mannerisms, or her stories,” recalls the former art therapist, who holds a BA in Art focusing on photography and videography, a minor in psychology and a masters in Art Therapy. At the time, with her youngest just about school age, Glass was planning to go back to work at a local nursing home. “I thought to myself, maybe I can put my talents together to create something that would make a lasting memory for those left behind by such a tragedy.”

“I believe that everyone has a story, but not everyone has the means as to how to share it,” says Glass. It turns out she had the precise background to do just that. Influenced by Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon University professor who had pancreatic cancer and video taped a “Last Lecture” that was turned into a book, she explains: “He not only wrote his story, he shared and had it filmed so his family could see, hear and read his words of wisdom whenever they wanted to. It was a lasting legacy for his loved ones that inspired me to assist those who wanted to share their stories and leave a legacy, too.”

From Concept to Reality… Spurred to action, Glass hired a lawyer and never looked back. “First, I had to create a name, a logo and a brochure. It was hard to find the right wording, but somehow it all came together,” she says. From there, the not-so-easy task of finding patrons took precedence. That came by way of a friend and board member whose mother-in-law was battling liver cancer and agreed to be her first client. “Once I filmed her and had a sample movie, it was a go,” Glass remembers, and with prototype in hand, she turned her attention to promotion by securing a meeting with Overlook Hospital. “There I was with my iPad and a few brochures ready to share the Memories Live story,” she explains. “I also went from hospital to hospital, hospice to hospice. Each place gave me more names of places and private practitioners I should talk to.” Thinking back on those days, Glass divulges, “When I started, I thought, ‘I’ll give this one year.’ Either I’ll have one year of failure and learn a lot, or I’ll succeed and keep going. The first year I filmed 12 people and now Memories Live averages 20-25 clients a year. So here I am 7 years later having filmed nearly 150 individuals.”

And just how does that process work? As Glass puts it, “At no cost to the families (Memories Live is supported by a fundraiser, grants and donations), we help those facing terminal illnesses to create a movie that celebrates their life, and what makes them who they are.” Logistically, patrons respond to an e-mail questionnaire, after which as most are very ill, Glass follows up with a one-time filming session. “It is sometimes both mentally and physically exhausting and at the same time uplifting,” she divulges. “I’m humbled that strangers let me into their lives at such a fragile stage; entrust in me to create this legacy for them. Given the opportunity to share personal & family history and memorable anecdotes, it is cathartic. Some read stories and poems, play or sing songs, others share recipes, advice, life lessons, and more.” Explaining that each movie is as different as is each individual, Glass concludes: “In the blink of an eye lives can be put in turmoil and uprooted. One day your life is normal and the next day you have a terminal illness. Knowing that I can do something for someone while they are experiencing this tragic phase of life gives me a purpose. I’ve learned to appreciate all I have, my health & family, much more. Memories Live www.memorieslive.org

Eliminate Dentistry Phobia with Dr. Linda Stone

Dr. Linda Stone of Gentle Caring Dentistry answers some common questions to help eliminate the phobia of visiting the dentist.

How can I overcome my anxiety? If you are one of the 30 to 40 million people suffering from dental phobia and anxiety in America, there is hope. One of the first steps is to find a dental environment you are comfortable with. At Gentle Caring Dentistry we have designed our waiting room with warm tones and colorful art to make clients feel like they are in a beautiful gallery rather than a clinical environment. It is also important that the staff is friendly and compassionate and understands the clients’ needs. Don’t be afraid to tell them about your prior experiences and anxiety. One of the most rewarding parts of our job is seeing a patient transform—from not being able to sleep the night before a dental appointment—to actually looking forward to their visit. It is a process that takes time, patience and compassion but the end result is life changing.

How can I relax at the dentist’s office?

Gentle Caring Dentistry

Dentistry is very different from years ago. Materials have improved and technologies have advanced which results in an overall reduction in a patient’s stress. The dreaded syringe is a thing of the past— at our office we use The Wand, a computer driven anesthetic technology that allows us to numb a single tooth, delivering the anesthetic very slowly, below the pain threshold.

D

A little distraction also goes a long way; we offer iPods or special multi-media glasses that provide an immersive video experience while patients are in the dental chair. Cinema glasses help reduce anxiety by visually removing patients from the clinical surroundings and fully immersing them in a video experience. The entertainment and distraction takes the patient’s mind away from the stressful sights and sounds of the dental office and virtually transport them to a place that is more calm and peaceful.

Dr. Linda Stone 201 South Livingston Avenue, Suite 2C, Livingston, NJ 973-994-3112 www.gentlecaringdentistry.com

oes the thought of going to the dentist evoke anxiety and fear? Did you have a prior personal traumatic dental experience? Do you feel embarrassed because you have neglected your teeth? Are you fearful about having a dental injection? You are not alone. Dental anxiety and phobia are extremely common. The current estimate is that 9% to 15% of Americans avoid seeing the dentist because of anxiety and fear; that is approximately 30 to 40 million people. People with dental phobia have a higher risk of gum disease and early tooth loss, due to avoiding the proper dental care. Damaged and discolored teeth can make people self-conscious and insecure; this emotional cost should not be overlooked. There is often a serious loss of self-esteem that impacts their personal and professional lives. 30

I’ve heard of nitrous oxide, what is it? Nitrous oxide, commonly known as ‘laughing gas,’ is used to relax patients during an appointment. Nitrous oxide is a sedating gas that produces a feeling of well being and euphoria, while the treatment is being performed. Once the gas has been turned off the feeling wears off quickly and it is safe to drive afterwards.

ivorce can be financially and emotionally devastating, but it doesn’t have to be. Here, Karolina Dehnhard, an attorney with the Law Firm of Budd Larner in Short Hills, explains how she helps women (and men) become empowered during the divorce process. What made you decide to focus on matrimonial law? My practice is based on my own experience. At age of 30, I found out that my “happily ever after” was indeed a fairy tale. After a few tumultuous months, and feeling unprepared to make any of the difficult decisions integral to the process, I found myself divorced. Regardless of the reasons, it was a sobering event in my life. Determined, undaunted and driven harder than ever, I decided to turn my divorce into a law degree. Recalling the fear of the unknown and my inability at the time to fully understand financial documents or tax returns, despite the fact that I had a Master’s Degree, I wanted to do something to alleviate the knot in the stomach that so many of my female client’s experience. Having come through the process of learning self-sufficiency, I was determined to help other women. Naturally, some of my clients are men, but it is usually my female clients who have left the workforce to raise children during the marriage that is now ending or simply have deferred to their spouses to be gatekeepers of the family finances.

What is Divorce Dynasty? Divorce Dynasty is a concept I launched in September but had been thinking about for a long time before that. It’s a way of bringing together professionals from different fields to guide women through the divorce process. I’ve assembled a team of financial planners, insurance experts, accountants, mortgage brokers, career coaches, even doctors and therapists. Being able to access a network of vetted professionals makes my client feel less scared and more empowered to rebuild her life. And these are all female professionals; I believe in women helping women.

Karolina Dehnhard, Esq. Budd Larner, P.C.,

150 John F. Kennedy Parkway, Short Hills, NJ 07078 973-379-4800 • kdehnhard@buddlarner.com

What is the most important thing you would tell a woman considering a divorce? A smart woman always knows how to protect her ass-ets. This has become my trademark line; I use it in radio interviews, magazine articles and when I participate in panel discussions. Women need to take control of their own lives, and having knowledge of their financial situation is the key.

ust as there are seasonal trends in fashion, there are seasonal trends in hair. Here, stylist Ariella Cianni of Shag86 Salon in Little Falls shares the latest in color, cut, and bridal headpieces. Are you seeing any new color trends for fall? Yes, two. First, I’m seeing a return to more natural colors; rose gold is definitely out. Of course, it all depends on your skin tone, but deep, rich tones like mahogany and chocolate brown are big now. The second trend is actually surprising. Cooler weather usually means a return to warmer tones, but this year women are asking for cooler tones. I’m getting a lot of requests for color with silver-y champagne undertones. Violet-y undertones are also very popular lately.

What about new methods of applying hair color? Balayage is a trend that I don’t expect to go away. The word is French for “swept” because color is swept onto the hair in a very natural-looking way. We use a special brush that has pointed or angled bristles so that there is no clear line of demarcation between the original and the added color. Balayage is more expensive than foil highlights, but it requires less maintenance.

Are you seeing any new hairstyles? Actually, this season is interesting for what I’m not seeing. Nobody seems to want bangs now.

June is of course the traditional wedding month, but it seems like fall weddings are gaining in popularity. Are you seeing any bridal hair trends?

Ariella Cianni

My bridal clients are asking for soft waves instead of the traditional updo. They want their hair pinned back, but not up.

Shag86

The other big bridal trend I’m seeing is headpieces that are not attached to veils. These are generally very large and extremely blinged-out. They often have lots of Swarovski crystals; I’ve also seen gold headpieces with colored stones in them.

What You Need to Know About Treatment and Recovery

D

r. Robin M. Gehrmann is a board certified orthopedic surgeon, specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He is affiliated with the North Jersey Orthopaedic Group, with offices in Millburn and Wayne. He served as chief of Orthopedic Sports Medicine at the Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School for 10 years and as Assistant Team Physician for the Philadelphia Eagles, Flyers, and Kixx, a men’s indoor professional soccer team. Here he answers some common questions patients may have:

Who is your typical cartilage transplant patient? RG: There are 2 main patient types. Young athletes with acute sports injuries, and young adults and children with repetitive, overuse injuries that cause damage to the joint surface. A common injury is something called Osteochondritis Dessicans or OCD, which are cracks that form in cartilage and the underlying bone, causing pain and swelling of the joint.

What are most of your patients surprised to learn? RG: That cartilage cannot regenerate itself, except in some cases when the patient is very young and has no other joint abnormalities. Most people with cartilage injuries will need a cartilage restoration procedure or transplantation depending on the severity of their injury. Although there is an interest in Stem Cell Therapy, it has not been demonstrated thus far to cause cartilage to regenerate.

What does the surgery involve?

Dr. Robin M. Gehrmann North Jersey Orthopedic Group 33 Bleeker St., Millburn 973-232-5034 www.njog.com

RG: Cartilage can be taken from another part of the body and used to as a “filler” in the affected joint surface or it can be grafted from a cadaver, as in cases of meniscal transplantation. In some situations, a partial or total joint replacement is recommended for older patients.

How long is the recovery period? When can patients resume their normal lifestyles? RG: The recovery period depends on several things: type of procedure, age and health of the patient, and how well they adhere to post-surgery instructions. While we strive to get our patients back to their normal lifestyles as quickly as possible, sometimes activity modifications need to be made. It is typically between 9 months and 1 year for a full return to athletic activities.

Finding Serenity

A GREAT ESCAPE IN BUCKS COUNTY

W

e couldn’t get out of town fast enough! Two stressed out urbanites, having lived through a particularly grueling few months, the lure of a laid back weekend at a cozy, romantic Inn and the scenic beauty of Bucks County, PA, was palpable.

Having planned an advance itinerary, including a winery pit stop en route, we arrived at Sand Castle Winery, Erwinna, PA, for a tasting and guided tour. High on a hilltop overlooking acres of vines, and modeled after a Bratislava castle, the view is marvelous, the tour and collection of vino impressive. Lucky one of us (not me) was designated driver. A bottle of “Alpine Spice,” a delicious Chardonnay/Riesling blend in tow, we backtracked the winding road, heading toward Stockton, New Jersey and the historic, 1792 stone manor that would be home base to explore Bucks County. www.sandcastlewinery.com

A Tranquil World…

Pleasantly greeted at the Woolverton Inn and happily ensconced in our third floor room were the warm glow of a fire, a mug of hot chocolate from the self-help bar, double whirlpool tub and a Queen featherbed were welcome indulgences. Suffice to say, unplugged from the telly (no TV’s at the inn) in peaceful bliss we contentedly whiled away time before dinner. www.woolvertoninn.com 36

Bowland’s Tavern, our eventual choice for supper, did not disappoint. Convivial atmosphere, live music and wholesome, upscale tavern food (standouts: cucumber and hummus appetizer; dry aged steak), it’s a chill place to enjoy a good meal and a little nightlife—which we did. Working on a full day’s journey into night, however, when that feather bed and sweet tranquility called, we answered. www.bowmanstavernrestaurant.com

Awaking to the aroma of fresh coffee brewing Joe and I made our way to the sun-drenched patio, where we met our delightful innkeepers Mary and Mario, for whom the Inn is a labor of love. Breakfast—a rare treat not to be missed—consisted of 3 courses all fresh, homemade specialties. Our choices included Pina Colada Scones, Oatmeal Raspberry Pancakes… A delicious way to start the day by any measure.

Out and About in Bucks County From spectacular foliage to festivals, galleries, theatre and more, Bucks County is the perfect decompressing destination, especially when autumn’s stunning hues pepper the landscape. The county boasts spectacular covered bridges. Photo buffs inclined to take the wheel to check out 10 of them will find directions at www.visitbuckscounty.com

The home of Pearl S. Buck was up next. An amazing humanitarian, tireless champion for children of mixed race and the first woman to receive both the Pulitzer and Nobel prizes for literature, Ms. Buck’s award-winning gardens and farmhouse are a day well spent. What a thrill to see the desk where she penned “The Good Earth,” along with original furnishings, paintings from renowned artists, and intriguing photos of luminaries like president John F. Kennedy and Eleanor Roosevelt to name a few. www.pearlsbuck.org Back at the Inn to feed treats to the resident sheep herd and relax before taking in a superb theatrical production at Bucks County Playhouse (BCP). One of the country’s most famous regional theaters, some of the biggest and brightest names in show business have graced the BCP stage, including the likes of Grace Kelly, Robert Redford, and Merv Griffin. Visit www.bcptheater.org for current productions. Our last morning at the Inn, savoring coffee, we sit mesmerized by the idyllic setting and serenity pool and find ourselves laughing a little more, feeling rested, recharged and ready to tackle the real world again. Thank you, Bucks County!

Next Stop… James A. Michener Museum and a mustsee exhibit—George Sotter Light and Shadow running through December 2017. The museum showcases the artist’s masterful landscapes and extraordinary work in stained glass. Do give yourselves ample time here, as they also house an amazing permanent collection of Pennsylvania Impressionist works and an outdoor sculpture garden, the latter being a wonderful space to enjoy lunch from the Terrace Café’s farm to table seasonal cuisine. We did just that and were overjoyed! www.michenerartmuseum.org
