Ariella Cianni Ariella Cianni, one of the talented stylists at Shag86 of Little Falls, recalls that even from the very first day of work in May of 2004 as an assistant at the salon, the first at which she had ever worked, she was eager to be “the best at everything.” Today, she has clearly achieved that goal, honing her skills over the years side by side with the best stylists in the field in cutting, color, styling and more. Music Like a Pro

re you—or is someone you know—a singer or musician? Here is the opportunity to professionally record a song with a production team that has worked with some of the top names in the music industry. Beginning in November, ACIEM Studios in Little Falls is offering In-Studio Audio Recording and Production Workshops, designed for both children and adults. Receive the benefit of ACIEM’s expert team and professional studio equipment with one of three packages. Tweens (ages 10-13) work in ACIEM’s vocal booth and record popular songs in “Sing in the Studio.” At the end of the workshop, they receive a CD of their performance with artist credit, an excellent gift for family and friends. Teenagers (ages 14-18) learn essential music production skills, and produce their own track in “Intro to Music Production.” Teens leave with a mix of

their professionally produced song with co-producer credit. Both tween and teen workshops include six sessions: two in small groups covering music production history and instruction, with the remaining four in individual sessions with ACIEM’s production staff, all taught in an engaging and age-appropriate style. Adults can take advantage of the “Song Incubator” workshop to produce and record original songs using ACIEM’s professional studio environment. Collaborate with ACIEM’s experienced team on artist decision-making and music production choices. Eight hours of studio time is included, culminating in the recording and mixing of one song, perfect for use as an artist demo.

ACIEM is a full-service, professionallevel audio/video production company. The ACIEM team has produced projects featuring Keith Urban, Randy Jackson, Phish, Rod Stewart, Neil Peart (RUSH), Phil Collins, Frank Zappa, and dozens more. “We work with household name artists and huge entertainment companies, but have always welcomed independent musicians and local small businesses,” says Brian Brodeur, founder of ACIEM. Brodeur established these workshops to fill a growing need in northern New Jersey’s music community. “Though independent artists are increasingly producing their music at home, most do not have access to professional-level equipment and experienced engineers,” he said. “We are offering these workshops and session packages to help support students and independent musicians interested in high-level production.” Notably, ACIEM will not own or control any rights to original music produced during the classes, and legally licenses any copyrighted music used in the workshops.

These kebabs go together very quickly, but if time is not on your side, pick-up pre-cut pineapple and peppers. Serve with rice.

Prep time: 15 minutes • Cook time: 8 minutes Servings: 16 kabobs 1

Smithfield Peppercorn & Garlic Seasoned Pork Sirloin Roast, cut into 32 (1-inch) cubes

large red bell peppers, cut into 16 (1-inch) pieces

1/2 ripe pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into 16 (1-inch) cubes 16 (6-inch) bamboo skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes, drained 2/3 cup honey 2

tablespoons balsamic vinegar

teaspoons Caribbean jerk seasoning blend (or other spicy seasoning blend)

Heat broiler with rack about 8 inches from heat source. Thread 2 pieces of pork, 1 red pepper piece and 1 pineapple cube onto each skewer. Wrap exposed end of each skewer with foil to discourage scorching. Mix honey, vinegar and jerk seasoning together for glaze. Broil kabobs, turning occasionally, until pork is done, about 8 minutes. Generously brush kabobs with honey glaze during last 2 to 3 minutes.

tab wounds… broken ribs… a punctured lung… broken noses… black eyes and fractured arms… these are but a few of the abuses Jersey Battered Women’s Service’s (JBWS) has addressed in 2015 alone, according to its executive director, Patty Sly. “Victims have been thrown out of a moving car, run down by a car, thrown down a flight of stairs, kicked, beaten, strangled and threatened with guns and knives,” she explains all too sadly, adding: “Often the kids see these incidents. The need for safety and services is great.”

Sly continues: “At JBWS, we work to help each victim find safety, self-sufficiency, and peace, and to break the cycle of violence so that their children can be raised in a home free of violence.” Prior to heading JBWS for the past 8 years, Sly’s community service included holding a leadership role in the development and opening of Morristown Memorial’s Carol G. Simon Cancer Center and serving as chairwoman of the United Way of Morris County.

A call to help victims of abuse…

What began as a hotline service functioning out of a kitchen, JBWS’s present day emergency shelter did not open until December 1978, which unfortunately, was tragically too late for two victims of domestic violence, Lois Gilmore and Rita Asencio. According to Sly, both women separated from their husbands and, fearing for their lives, called the hotline service seeking safety. “Lois was shot and killed at a Randolph hair salon, where she worked. Rita and her mother were killed in Rita’s parents’ home in Boonton,” Sly divulged. “The community’s outrage at these tragic murders spurred the fundraising necessary to open the shelter.”

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, ONE IN FIVE women have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime in the United States. Today, the now full-service agency houses 20 women and 30 children facing many challenges, including underemployment, limited affordable housing, childcare and transportation expenses, and medical issues. Hundreds more are being served through counseling services, and over 1000 are attended to in the organizations legal advocacy program. Sly says, “This past year, 12% of our residential clients were pregnant.” She notes that pregnancy tends to escalate the violence as the abuser loses control of the victim’s attention. Her hope is that by successfully supporting these

Children’s Bedroom women in their transition to self-sufficiency, those as-of-yet unborn children may have a real chance of living in a home free of violence. As for those children already living in violent homes and having to reconcile their love of their father with the abuse he directs at their mother, Sly points to them as being at higher risk of being in abusive relationships as adults because of their experience. “So our work is two-fold,” she says, “to provide immediate safety and assist in the healing process, and to give the understanding and tools to ultimately break the intergenerational cycle of violence.” Moving forward, one of the organization’s newest initiatives is the creation of the Family Justice Center, which will open early in 2016. Located in the Morris County Administration and Records building, representatives of JBWS and its partners at the Prosecutor’s office, police, courts, attorneys, immigration experts and sexual assault center will make accessing services easier and allow all of the partners to work more effectively together.

To keep all of this going, JBWS needs to raise every dollar it spends each year through grants and contributions. rom an extremely crowded nominations pool, one name rose to the top: Joanne Szibdat. The New Jersey Restaurant & Hospitality Association (NJRHA) is honoring Szibdat with a 2015 Gold Plate award for her professional excellence and commitment to the community. She has dedicated her career to supporting business owners and operators, helping them achieve positive results through the development of strong culture. Szibdat’s contribution to the hospitality industry spans over thirty-five years. In her role as General Manager of Mayfair Farms in West Orange, she oversees day-to-day operations along with a professional staff of ninety employees. Szibdat’s proudest accomplishment is her employees. She identifies her ability to attract and retain qualified individuals who work together in a team-oriented environment as a key ingredient to her successes. Szibdat believes that this strong team culture creates the atmosphere and energy of a restaurant. She notes that this culture is one that must be earned, saying, “it requires commitment and an attention to many details.” Clearly, she has earned it. The Gold Plate award recognizes current outstanding service and achievement in the food service industry. An esteemed panel of six former award winners spent many hours debating over the nominees. “There were more nominations in each category than ever before, which is testament to how many superb restaurant and hospitality leaders there are in New Jersey,” said Marilou Halvorsen, president of NJRHA. ver want to sample an expensive bottle of wine before you purchase it? Do you want to enjoy just one pour of fine vintage bourbon at an affordable price? Or, have you tasted the best sparkling wine but forgotten its details before making your way to a liquor store? Neelima Lekkala, owner the Wine Legend of West Orange, has solved all these problems – and more. In this unique concept that combines a wine and spirits bar offering tasting flights together with a retail liquor store, Lekkala provides her customers with a true “try before you buy” experience. The Wine Legend of West Orange seeks to make the luxury wine and spirits category more accessible with its aggressive pricing. Sitting down at the welcoming bar area, guests are able to order from a menu of up to twenty-five choices of wine in either four-ounce glasses or smaller, two-ounce tasting pours. Not limited to wines, the bar menu also features over fifty spirit options in either one-ounce or two-ounce pours. Many of these spirits are hard to find by the glass elsewhere, such as Pappy Van Winkle bourbon or Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac. Lekkala explains that “because of the liquor store component, pricing at the bar area is very affordable.” Thus, tasting of a $30 bottle of wine is offered for only $4-$5 a pour, or the Pappy Van Winkle for just $17 a pour. The bar also has a limited tapas menu, so that guests can enjoy a bite to eat

with their drinks. Most notably, if your favorite wine is not on the bar menu, you may purchase it in the store and bring it to the bar, where it will be poured for you and your friends without a corkage fee. Lekkala notes, “this concept truly brings retail pricing into a bar atmosphere.” In addition to the bar, the store boasts one of the largest temperature-controlled wine rooms in New Jersey. The full-scale liquor store contains a wide selection, and special orders are welcome. The store is the newest location for the Wine Legend, a family-owned and operated discount liquor store that has another retail store in Livingston. Its motto is “Lowest Prices in New Jersey.” Lekkala, born and raised in India, earned her undergraduate degree in pharmacy before moving to New Jersey in 1996. Upon arriving here, she began helping her parents with their own liquor store and soon fell in love with the industry. Following her passion, she traded prescriptions and pills for varietals and vineyards. The petite storeowner has big dreams for her innovative location. Celebrating the Wine Legend of West Orange’s Grand Opening on October 15, 2015, Lekkala looks forward to expanding its offerings to include private events and a changing selection on its tasting menu. r. Valerie J. Ablaza, a partner and Corporate Vice President of The Plastic Surgery Group, answers questions about a the cosmetic procedure that can help children (and adults) feel better about their ears.

My son has protruding ears and we are concerned with teasing, as he is about to enter school. Is there a procedure for this? Yes, ear reshaping surgery, also called Otoplasty, is performed to reposition ears closer to the head or to reduce the size of one or both ears that are large in proportion to the size and shape of ones face. Due to the fact that ears are almost fully developed by the age of five, this operation is mostly performed on children between the ages of five and fourteen. When the surgery is performed at a young age, the pliable cartilage is easier to reshape.

How is the surgery done? Otoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure usually under general anesthesia. The most common technique involves a small incision on the back of the ear where the cartilage is bent back toward the head and sculpted into the desired shape. When the procedure is complete, the patient has a more natural-looking fold to the ear. The sutures placed behind the ears will be used to help maintain the new shape of the ears.

What is the recovery time after surgery? Within a few hours of surgery, the patient will be up and about with a bulky bandage to promote the best molding and healing. The soft dressings that are put on the ears will stay on for a few days, followed by a lighter dressing similar to a headband. It is recommended to wear the headband for two weeks in order to hold the ears in the correct position. Sutures will dissolve or be removed within one week to ten days after the surgery. Any activity in which the ear might be bent should be avoided for one month. Young patients will be able to attend school after one to two weeks, though should avoid all sports for at least one month.

After the surgery heals, will there be noticeable scarring? Otoplasty will result in a faint scar on the back of the ear, which will fade with time. The scar is placed along a natural crease behind the ear and is usually well hidden and difficult to notice.

ven though New Jersey has one of the lowest divorce rates in the country, if a couple is planning to divorce, it is important to know the current state of the law. Karolina Dehnhard, Esq., a family law attorney at Budd Larner, P.C. in Short Hills, helps couples navigate this complex process. Dehnhard, herself a divorcée, knows first-hand how stressful the road to divorce can be. She applies her insider knowledge to lend a sympathetic ear and guide her clients through the process. Dehnhard believes that one way to decrease stress levels is to understand the current legal landscape. She offers the following insights into last year’s reforms in the law as they concern alimony.

What is alimony? Alimony, one part of the divorce process, is vital to the financial stability of everyone involved. Alimony, based on the right arising out of marriage, is the amount of payment by one spouse to another following a divorce. The amount always varies depending on several types of circumstances and upon the ruling of the family court.

Who decides upon the terms of alimony? If the couple cannot reach an agreement through a settlement, the family court will determine the terms of alimony. The court shall consider and assess evidence with respect to all relevant statutory factors. No factor shall be more important than any other factor unless the court finds otherwise, in which case the court shall make specific written findings of fact and conclusions of law in that regard.

Are there different types of alimony? Yes, below are four types of alimony in New Jersey. The court may award any combination of the following orders. 1. Open durational alimony, which has an open term until the court terminates it or the parties agree to terminate it, applies to marriages of more than 20 years. This replaced “permanent alimony.” 2. Rehabilitative alimony is shortterm alimony that allows one spouse the time to reestablish themselves in the workforce. They need to substantiate the steps that will be taken and include a time period for the rehabilitation. 38

3. Limited Duration alimony is awarded when the marriage or civil union is less than 20 years in duration. The total duration of alimony payments shall not, except in exceptional circumstances, not exceed the length of the marriage or civil union. 4. Reimbursement alimony is awarded under circumstances in which one party supported the other through an advanced education. This type of alimony seeks to compensate for the anticipated earning capacity, generated from that education.

How was alimony law recently changed? On September 10, 2014, Governor Chris Christie signed into law a bill that went into immediate effect and substantially amended various provisions of New Jersey’s alimony law, N.J.S.A. 2A:34-23. Overall, the bill “establishes durational limits and enumerates certain factors concerning modification and termination of alimony; establishes ‘open durational’ alimony” in place of “permanent alimony.”

Thus, in terms of alimony, the law will apply only to divorces in process and future divorces. The law will also apply to applications to modify alimony based upon changes of circumstances and retirement. Dehnhard has appeared on radio programs and is the author of several articles. She has been the featured speaker at women in business events in both New Jersey and New York, on the topic of Women Protecting Their Assets. She serves as a commissioner on the Mongil Housing Corporation in Union County, the Corporate Advisory Board of the Boys & Girls Club of Union County, the Board of Directors of the Jewish Battered Women Service and the Leadership Committee of the National Multiple Sclerosis foundation “Women On the Move.” She also is an adjunct professor at New York Law School.

The amended law does not apply retroactively, expressly providing that it “shall not be construed either to modify the duration of alimony ordered or agreed upon or other specifically bargained for contractual provisions that have been incorporated into: (1) a final judgment of divorce or dissolution; (2) a final order that has concluded Budd Larner, P.C., post-judgment litigation; 150 John F. We started offering the movie glasses at the beginning of this year and patients absolutely love them!

All of them! The main reason they are available is to enhance patient comfort during any procedure. We chose to stream Netflix through the movie glasses so patients have endless options to choose from and there is something for everyone. We recommend either a TV show for a simple cleaning appointment or a full length movie for a more involved procedure.

What made you decide to make them available to patients? One of the biggest triggers of anxiety in patients is hearing the sound of the drill. With the Cinema ProMed system patients can immerse themselves in a movie and drown out what is going on around them. The movie makes the time go by so much faster for the patient. We recently had a young patient come in to our office for an emergency, so we gave him the Cinema ProMed. He was laughing hysterically during his appointment! It is a great feeling to see a patient having a positive and fun experience at the dentist.

About what percentage of your patients decide to wear the glasses? The majority of our patients choose to use the movie glasses, particularly for longer appointments. We have found that patients enjoy being able to focus on a movie and it makes the appointment go by much faster. We have Fall 2015

even had patients request to stay after their appointment just so they can finish what they were watching!

Is there an extra cost to the patient to use the glasses? We have incorporated the glasses into our standard routine and they are free for all patients.

How does nitrous oxide compliment the cinema glass system? The nitrous oxide system and multimedia video glass system fit nicely together. The nose piece on the glasses is easily removable and the frame fits with the nitrous oxide nasal hood. Most patients, particularly the fearful ones, love being able to use both at the same time. What is a medical spa? A true med spa is a result-oriented facility that’s run by a physician trained in a specialty, such as a plastic surgeon, facial ENT, oculoplastic surgeon or dermatologist. Caring for Your Hair in the Colder Weather

Do you see any seasonal changes in hair color? As the weather gets colder, women want their hair to look warmer. Platinum blonde becomes more golden or a brunette may want to add in some red. Most women’s skin tones tend to change during late fall and winter; the lack of sunlight makes it look ashier. Warming up your hair balances out your skin.

Does this also apply to the more trendy colors? Yes. Even the neon colors are calming down for the cold weather. Purple is still very popular, but it’s now a more purplish-gray. The same goes for blue. It’s still around, but it’s becoming a softer shade.

Is there such a thing as a cold-weather cut? There isn’t one specific haircut that my clients are coming in and asking for, but I definitely see that they are looking to grow out their hair a little bit. They don’t want anything superlong, but they want to cover their ears, since it’s cold out. All of my clients with bobs are growing out their hair to collarbonelength. Nothing too extreme, though.

Is there anything women can do about static-y hair?

Here, the wizard of cuts and coloring discusses caring for your hair during the winter months.

Static-y, flyaway is the number one thing my clients complain about starting in late fall. The dry air and the extra layers of coats and scarves everyone wears make static electricity even worse. Although we can’t control the electricity in the air, there are steps we can take to protect our hair from the worst of it. I recommend glazing, a process that uses a non-ammonia product to close the cuticle of the hair. It also adds moisture and prevents color from fading, like a topcoat of nail polish. Glazing works even better than conditioning to fight static, because it seals your hair’s moisture in. Depending on how often you wash your hair, glazing should be done every four to six weeks.

Should women change their hair-care routines during the fall and winter? Absolutely. Most women will need to switch over to a more moisturizing, sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, since there is less moisture in the air once the weather gets colder. For the same reason, they should consider washing their hair less often. Even a natural shampoo that contains sulfates contains substances that may remove healthy oils from the scalp. Of course, if your hair is naturally oily, winter is actually your best season.

all is coming to an end and flu season is waiting in the wings. There are so many places germs can hide in your home. It’s time to expand your cleaning cycle and go beyond the basics to get your home disinfected and deeply cleaned.

Exercise Areas Many people exercise at home using hand weights, exercise balls and yoga mats. Clean them thoroughly using disinfecting wipes. If you own a treadmill, stair climber or an elliptical machine, don’t forget to clean the handles frequently. If you work out at the gym, your gym bag needs to be wiped down on a regular basis.

Playrooms & Game Rooms Toys can be cleaned with a disinfecting wipe. Rinse them well and be sure they are thoroughly dry before allowing children to play with them again. Don’t forget that pool cues, Ping-Pong paddle handles and video game controllers are touched frequently. Clean them to keep outside germs from spreading through your household.

Kitchens Disinfect your kitchen trashcans on a regular basis. Many people keep recycling containers for bottles and cans in the kitchen, too. Get in the habit of rinsing out the bottles and cans before discarding, especially canned meats and fish. If weather permits, take these containers outside and rinse them out with the hose and a mild disinfectant liquid detergent. While you’re at it, check the condition of your outside garbage cans. They may also need to be cleaned and disinfected.

Bathrooms Laundry Rooms Laundry baskets and laundry hampers harbor germs from soiled clothing. Again, a disinfecting wipe will clean them up. Washing machines collect loads of bacteria and dirt from clothes and underwear. Clean them once a month by running them without clothes on the

Check the bottom of your bath mats to see if they have accumulated any mold. If they have, it’s time to buy a replacement. Check the folds and the hems of your plastic shower curtain liners, too. This season, expand your cleaning cycle to guarantee yourself a cleaner living space.
