Super financier, J.P. Morgan, combed the world collecting bibles, manuscripts and rare books. His private library, a bibliophile’s paradise, is the cornerstone of the Morgan Museum and Library, NYC. The museum, a fine place to escape blustery weather, also offers exhibitions, concerts, lectures, films and gallery talks. If your schedule permits more than an afternoon, charming quarters are available just five blocks south on 31st Street. Built in 1905, around the same time as the Morgan, Hotel Chandler retains its historic character with details such as original ornate carvings and an iron spiral staircase. Guest rooms are plush with all the amenities necessary for modern luxury living. Relax in the cozy library with a brandy or complimentary coffee in front of the fireplace. No need to leave this haven in search of haute cuisine. Shaun Hergatt, the clever chef at the on-premise restaurant, Juni, plates works of art to be savored and devoured. An Educated Guest

Stirring Success Dubbed the “Cocktail Whisperer,” New Jersey’s Warren Bobrow shares an antidote for damp, frigid weather from his new book, “Apothecary Cocktails, Restorative Drinks from Yesterday and Today.” Served in a shot glass instead of a bowl, steaming hot beet borscht spiked with vodka is the perfect way to welcome a frozen guest in from the cold. Roasted Beet Borscht with Sour Cream & Vodka 3 pounds of beets cut into chunks 6 cups strong beef broth (more, if you prefer a thinner soup) Freshly grated horseradish, to taste Vodka Sour cream for garnish

Heated Conversation Everyone is so busy! Here are some of our favorite places to catch-up with your besties over a quick lunch or cup of tea: InsaniTea—No morning rush here; funky InsaniTea is only open from 2 pm to midnight. Stop in for loose-leaf teas, a nosh and a chat. All natural pet treats and items by local crafters are available for sale. InsaniTea also hosts a drop-in knitting circle, a writer’s group and will arrange for tarot readings. www.insaniteallc.com, Montclair

Roast beets in a 350°F oven for 1 hour or until cooked through. Puree in a blender or food processor until smooth. Add the beef broth to the pureed beets, using a bit more or less broth depending on how you prefer the soup’s consistency. Then mix in the horseradish, a little at a time, to taste. Carefully spoon the mixture into individual shot glasses (be careful: the bright-red beet puree stains fabrics). Add 1 medicine-dropperful of vodka to each shot glass. Top each with a small dollop of sour cream. Dig in, and let this Russian elixir perform its healing work upon body and soul. Makes 10 servings, plus leftovers.

Cosy Cupboard Tearoom—The dining room is formal and the tables are elegantly appointed, but the mood is relaxed as the name implies. Linger over a pot of freshly brewed tea (over 42 varieties) accompanied by traditional English tea favorites or heartier fare. Their freshly baked scones are so yummy you’ll want to take some home. www.cosycupboardtearoom.com, Thursdays-Sundays, by reservation, Convent Station ANA BEALL’s TEA ROOM—Four different types of tea services are listed on the menu; the simplest is a Cream Tea, which includes a scone with cream, butter and jam. From there you can add delicate finger sandwiches, bite sized sweets, soup, salad and dessert. Lunch (including an “express” option) is served daily, Tuesday-Sunday, and brunch is offered on the weekends. www.anabeallstearoom.com, Westfield HIGH SOCITEA—Each guest is presented with an individual pot of tea artfully wrapped in a handmade tea cozy. Special care is taken to make the food a feast for the eyes as well as the palate (pictured above). Everything is prepared fresh in the kitchen from tangy lemon curd to seasonal soups. A small gift shop offers tea related items. Various hours Thursday-Sunday, reservations required. Highsocieteanj.com, Wayne

Long-Held

SECRETS Unlock TALENTS for Artist & Writer

MARCIA AMMEEN

e often hear of people who start second careers later in life, but not often does life’s sequel begin with the eruption of a buried memory—a hidden secret—a transformative affair. Such is the story of Verona resident Marcia Ammeen’s transition from 45 years as a successful New York art director and book designer to a blossoming career as a painter and writer.

Long-Held Secrets Unlock Talents for Artist & Writer Marcia Ammeen (continued from page 17)

Following her junior year at Rhode Island School of Design, Ammeen spent the summer of 1963 in Europe, part of it studying painting at Oskar Kokoschka’s “School of Vision” in Salzburg, Austria. After graduation Ammeen moved to New York City in search of a job. Ignoring advice to “become a secretary,” she pushed beyond the barriers of women at the time and built a career as an award-winning art director and book designer. Caught up in her work, she found “she couldn’t be a Sunday painter” and abandoned painting for 45 years. Three years ago, while browsing a shop in Manhattan, Ammeen experienced a strange and surprising vision, prompted by a song playing in the store. Asked to recall how it happened, she says, “The music resonated subconsciously, and suddenly, I had the name and first page of a story from long ago.”

The vision was powerful enough to unleash eight months of obsessive writing about that summer in Salzburg and her affair with a hugely charismatic, talented and philandering art instructor. Aided by daily journals and correspondence with a friend, her book, titled, 31 Days: A Memoir of Seduction, is the never-before-told story of that fateful summer. Beyond Ammeen’s sexual and artistic awakening, we glimpse the intrigue and mercenary underbelly of Europe’s art world in the 1960’s. Writing her memoir has reignited Ammeen’s original passion for painting—this time with renewed vigor and “creative emotion.” Ammeen has been busy: in the last three years she has produced a broad array of nuanced styles and subjects, showing many of her works at exhibits in New York and New Jersey. First to come forth were vibrant and joyful flowers, “reminding me that I could paint.” Her work then expanded to studies of light and dark, color and contrast and the more twodimensional, Namibia Dunes, for which she received an award at the Park Avenue Club in New Jersey. Throughout, Ammeen has shown a special affinity for the female form. From her nudes to the exquisitely robed ladies strolling the Beaches at Goa, or her more recent portraits of young girls, Ammeen continues to explore the sensuality of women. Although she thanks her instructor, “every day for this gift, for this renewed energy and take on life,” interestingly, her work almost never includes men. Ammeen’s forthcoming memoir, 31 Days: A Memoir of Seduction, will be published in the US by The Story Plant.

PERFORMING ARTS Where dance flourishes & inspiration soars… By Sherri Heller, photos by Dan Epstein

t seems most people would agree with Webster’s Dictionary definition of “dance”—“to move your body in a way that goes with the rhythm and style of music that is being played.” But for Sharron Miller, founder and Director of Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts (SMAPA), there is a more compelling meaning of the art form: Miller views dance as a vital and distinctly personal form of self-expression that builds self confidence in all areas of a youngster’s life.

Sharron Miller’s ACADEMY FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS (continued from page 17)

It is this core belief that motivates Miller and her staff at the 18-year-old not-for-profit arts organization in Montclair. “At SMAPA we’re not just teaching ballet and tap,” explains Miller. “When your child moves and completes four gallops plus four jumps, that’s a total of eight steps in one set. Four sets are thirtytwo steps. We are teaching structure, discipline and how math is used in daily life.” A Julliard School graduate, Miller trained as a professional dancer and lived in New York City. She was featured in numerous Broadway shows and travelled the world as a dance soloist with The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Her impeccable dance career garnered much artistic acclaim, but as an African American woman married to a Jewish man and with a young daughter to raise, she and her husband decided to move to Montclair in 1990 because she knew it was a diverse and accepting community—one where an interracial couple could comfortably raise a biracial daughter.

One day she was approached by her daughter’s pre-school teacher and asked to teach a small dance class. As the popularity of this class grew, Miller was approached again. This time she was asked to set up an arts education/dance curriculum. “I never had a plan to teach or build a school,” Miller reminisces with characteristic enthusiasm. “But opportunity found me, and I simply responded by sharing my passion and knowledge of how dance made a difference in my life.”

“I never had a plan to teach or build a school, but opportunity found me…”

—Sharron Miller

Fast forward to 1996 when SMAPA was officially launched. As its scope broadened to include residences in The Craig School (Mountain Lakes), The Children’s Institute of Verona, The East Orange Elementary Schools and the Quitman Street Community School in Newark, the comprehensive roster of classes also grew. In total, SMAPA serves over 4,000 students per year consisting of four divisions— Pre-School (2 to 5), Junior (6 to 11), Prep (12 to 18) and Adults (includes seniors).

Miller is passionate about giving back, both to students in need and to the community at large. One of her major initiatives is the Performance Workshop Ensemble (PWE), a merit-based scholarship program underwritten by the Stone Foundation for up to 15 students, each of whom receives the equivalent of $3,000 of training. In turn, these students give back by performing throughout the area at local elementary schools, as well as at various fundraising events. “We now have a Junior Performance Workshop Ensemble (JPWE ) supported in part by the Foundation and additionally a Free Ballet Program for 14 boys, age 6 to 14, also supported by the Stone Foundation.”

“Four years ago,we wrote a grant proposal through the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and SMAPA is now able to offer an eight-week dance residency for first through fourth grade students at 12 schools in East Orange,” she continues. “The East Orange school district has come up with matching funds, and recently, through a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, we were able to expand the program to a five-week residency for kindergarten students.” Two smaller scholarships are especially close to Miller’s heart. In honor of her mother, an educator who died in July, the school offers the Mildred Spain Scholarship. “To celebrate my Mom’s life, this needbased scholarship sponsors a single student age 6 to 10 who shows interest and ability,” Miller explains. And when her long-time administrative assistant, Joyce Copeland, retired and told Miller, “I don’t want a gold watch,” Miller established the Joyce Copeland Scholarship that sponsors a student, age 10 to 12. Other notable initiatives include a summer Arts Camp, workshops that train dance professionals

and teaching artists and an annual fund-raising event in June. This year’s event will honor SMAPA/PWE graduates, some of whom have gone on to dance professionally in The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera and other Broadway hits. Others, she says, get the opportunity to attend college, based on their ability as dancers. When asked of her plans for the future, Miller responds by noting how much she wants to continue to give back. “We must help this next generation face the future with courage and commitment. It’s our sacred gift to them. Seeing the light in a child’s eye is the greatest reward there is.” So, consider this: the next time you hear the renowned “5… 6… 7…8!” — that rhythmic mantra which every dancer has emblazoned in his/her soul — know that SMAPA moves forward into the 21st century. With the support of a dedicated Board of Directors and gifted faculty, Sharron Miller continues to enlighten, educate and empower students, teaching artists, professional dancers, schools, audiences and individuals of all ages and cultural backgrounds.

ACHIEVING HEALTH NATURALLY Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Nutritional Counseling

Frugal Millionaire

INFERTILITY SPECIALIST Increase your chances for pregnancy by 65% with acupuncture & herbs

By Brenda Hendrickson

Dear Frugal Brenda;

My husband and I were just married and wanted everything to be perfect. We know we spent too much and now the bills are coming in. How can we avoid this in the future so we can save and create personal wealth—the frugal way? Dear Newlyweds: Congratulations on your recent marriage and acknowledging your overspending. Spending it feels great until the credit cards start coming in, then the questions arise whether they were wanted or needed. Frugal millionaires create personal wealth by not impressing friends or family with material possessions and do not live beyond their means. Starting a new life together takes planning which includes finances. Tax season is the best time to create your worth statement and a spending plan or budget for the coming year. You receive bank statements, credit card statements and other documents needed to design your financial spending plan. Remember a plan or budget is not written in stone. Adjustments can be made during the year to reach your goals. Don’t forget to add an account called ‘Save’ to your plan. Repeat the process each year and watch your wealth grow year after year. Home Sweet (Germ-Free) Home By Ruth A. Bollo, Clean It Right, photo by Dan Epstein

I

f someone in the family has a cold or the flu, your home can start to feel like a hotbed of germs. Here are a few helpful tips to keep your home clean, safe and sanitized during this cold and flu season.

Institute a “Shoes Off at the Door” policy

Ruth Bollo

Not only do shoes track in dirt and salt, they can also track in germs, pesticides and even lead. A recent study from the University of Arizona found that live bacteria and viruses—including E. coli—can cross your threshold on the soles of your shoes. Babies, toddlers and pets spend a lot of time crawling around on the floor, so keep them safe.

stair railings, light and lamp switches, refrigerator handles, soap dispensers, even salt and pepper shakers. Ground zero for germs in the home is the remote control. Research at The University of Virginia found that more than half of the remotes tested came up positive for the rhinovirus that causes colds.

Cut down on dirt with a doormat outside the door. Place an absorbent rug or mat inside the door and keep a washable bin (or even a rimmed baking sheet) close by to stash footwear. And don’t forget a basket of slippers or socks for your family and guests.

Viruses can live on hard surfaces for almost 48 hours, so keep your computer keyboard clean, too. And you don’t want to know what’s living on your (or your child’s) cell phone, so wipe it down often with a disinfecting wipe. Some common disinfectants are Lysol, Clorox Wipes and Mr. Clean Disinfectant Wipes.

Clean Heating Vents Heating vents do more than blow hot air and dust around the house. They can also blow around germs. Dust and vacuum your heating vents to keep the air circulating. A vacuum with a HEPA filter can trap small particles and allergens and not circulate them back into the air. Don’t forget to change your furnace filters, too.

Cleaning, Deodorizing and Disinfecting

Where Germs Hide

Cleaners clean and deodorizers make things smell good. Disinfectants kill germs and bacteria, but only if they are used properly. Many disinfectants need to air dry or can take up ten minutes or more to work. Read the label carefully and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure you’re actually killing germs, not just wiping them around. It’s best to use disinfectants with paper towels, so you can just toss the germs away.

If someone in the house is sick, you need to keep the obvious places wiped down—countertops, tabletops, the bathroom sink, faucet and toilet handle. But be sure to search out and clean all the other surfaces you share—

It’s impossible to kill all the germs in your home, but frequent hand washing, common sense, and frequent cleaning during cold and flu season can keep cold and flu germs at bay. First Quarter 2014

Sharing Your Business Insight Demonstrates Your Value and Instills Confidence By Donna R. Thompson

hink back on your life. Were there people always ready to help you, answer your questions, or solve a problem? How did it feel to have someone knowledgeable to support you along your path to business or personal success? Pretty good, right? The Big Bold Business Advice Books do just that. The authors share their expertise to help other business owners succeed. Here’s what a few of the Big Bold Business authors have to say about growing a business and increasing revenue. In her chapter, “Growing Your Business with Body Doubles,” LuAnn Nigara, owner of Window Works in Livingston, presents her method for maximizing leads and closing sales using “body doubles.” Nigara’s body doubles are strategic partners who will benefit from her business expertise, and in turn, will steer business back to Nigara’s company when the opportunity arises. “Imagine business body doubles out on the streets every day talking to people about you, your

business, and your products or services,” she explains. You can dramatically increase your bottom line by implementing such a method, which results in very warm leads who know all about you and your expertise, and will do business with you when the need arises, thanks to your body double. Being the best is no longer good enough in today’s competitive market, notes Susan P. Ascher, president of The Ascher Group in Short Hills. In her chapter, “From Good to Great: Five Secrets That Separate the Best from the Rest,”

Ascher shares her “daily code of conduct” that has led to her business success—from image, to manners, to improving communication skills and more—and it can help you, too. Take image, for example. “If you want to make a million, you have to look like a million… If you are really clueless… hire an image consultant. She will be worth her weight in future business,” she advises. Cindy Plantz Malinchak, owner of Environmentally Based Green Building in Warren, says “there are literally hundreds of things a business can do to go ‘green’.” In her chapter, “Simple Ways to ‘Green’ Your Business That You Can Implement Now,” Malinchak provides lots of eco-friendly ideas that are “good for the environment and your bottom line.” These include modifying light and heat use to save energy, or shredding used paper for new life as packing material or to donate to an animal shelter for use as bedding. She adds, “Do not be shy to boast to everyone that you are taking these measures.” Let the media know, too, and you might just get some publicity for your goodwill efforts. In short, sharing your expertise whenever you can is a good thing. It’s a great way to help others and serve the greater good—something we should all do more often. You’ll feel good about it, people will remember you for it, and your business will benefit in the long run.

Dr. Greuner Discusses How to Cure Chronic Pelvis Pain

ardiovascular surgeon Dr. David Greuner of NYC Surgical Associates, with offices throughout the NYC metro area, is a nationally recognized expert in vascular and minimally invasive surgery, as well as a regular columnist on the subject for North Jersey Woman. In this issue, he discusses pelvic vein congestion, which is a very common, highly underdiagnosed, and easily cured cause of chronic pelvic pain and pain during intercourse.

How is it treated?

What exactly is pelvic vein congestion, and what causes it?

Often, veins in the legs which are usually also not functioning well are treated following the pelvic vein repairs.

Pelvic vein congestion, also called pelvic venous insufficiency, is related to circulation problems in the veins within and around the ovaries. These veins are often overly enlarged; you might think of this condition as varicose veins of the ovaries.

Is embolization major surgery?

We don’t always know what causes pelvic vein congestion. It may be related to the positioning of a woman’s uterus, a previous deep vein thrombosis (blood clot) of the pelvis, or inflammation of the pelvic area. It is more common among women who have had more than one baby, and extremely common among women with prior pelvic surgery.

What are its symptoms? One major symptom is continuous pelvic pain or discomfort not related to a woman’s menstrual period. The pain is often described as a dull ache, particularly if she has been standing for a long time. A woman with pelvic vein congestion may also feel heaviness or fullness in her legs or bladder, as well as abdominal cramping or pain in her lower back. She may also experience nausea or bloating, and very commonly pain during intercourse. Often, they have seen numerous specialists that cannot account for the cause of their pain. Many women who come to see us have often had previous procedures done to treat varicose veins, and their varicose veins tend to be more severe higher up in the leg than most patients without pelvic vein insufficiency. In fact, roughly 25% of women with regular varicose veins will also have pelvic venous insufficiency. 32

North Jersey Woman

First Quarter 2014

Pelvic venous insufficiency is not treated by most specialists, and many physicians are unaware of the symptoms, signs, and treatment. In the past it was treated with open surgery, but now in the right hands, it is treated using a procedure called ovarian vein embolization. During this procedure, a catheter is inserted without an incision through the patient’s groin or neck and into the affected veins. Using continuous X-ray imaging, the surgeon deploys tiny particles to divert blood flow from the diseased vein to the closest functioning vein. This reduces pressure on the diseased vein and decreases pressure on the organs in the pelvis, relieving the patient of pain.

Not at all. The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes and is done in the office. The patient most often is under conscious sedation, as opposed to general anesthesia, just to make them more calm and relaxed. The procedure is painless and leaves no scar. Patients remain in the office for observation for two to three hours afterwards, but go home the same day. Most patients can resume normal activities within a day.

How successful is treatment? Very successful. Reports in peer-reviewed publications show an anatomic success rate of over 95%, with over 83% of patients reporting significant improvement in their symptoms. It is important to keep in mind, though, that while one treatment is generally sufficient, there are cases where pelvic veins will require additional treatments. For any other questions you may have, e-mail Dr. Greuner at info@nycsurgical.net

inter doldrums getting you—and your hair—down? Whether your locks are less than lustrous or in need of some expert color care, Jen Martinez, Master Stylist and Education Director at Shag86 in Little Falls, has the answers to some of your most pressing hairstyling questions. For more on the latest in hair care, check out Martinez’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/JenniferMartinezShag86. My roots are growing out, but it seems my hair isn’t getting any longer. What’s going on?

Is there a big difference between the grocery-store hair color boxes and salon color?

Many people ask me this question at the salon. However, the answer is simple—if you see regrowth at the scalp, it’s growing. The ends are usually the issue because of the abuse they take from things like highlighting, over-bleaching, blow-drying and flat ironing—all causing breakage. Try to take about three months to treat your hair right. Use regular conditioning treatments and a lower temperature on the blow dryer, and try to avoid the flatiron, which will surely break hair off at the ends. Also, ease up on highlighting. Follow these guidelines, and I guarantee there will be an unbelievable difference in your hair’s condition.

Let’s put it this way: You can always tell when people color their own hair. Lighter colors appear to have a yellow-orange kick to them, and darker colors tend to have different bands of color going down the hair shaft. Another big giveaway is the condition of the hair afterward. As the weeks go on, your hair starts to appear dry and frazzled. People spend a lot more money fixing hair that has been box-dyed than they do with a professional coloring done at a salon. Corrective color can be costly because box coloring contains metallic dyes, which are extremely hard to remove from the hair, sometimes taking several processes to get the required results.

I would like to try a lighter color, but my hair is weak. Is there a bleach-free method I can try?

Jen Martinez Shag 86

North Jersey Woman

First Quarter 2014

If your hair is the weaker side, when you apply bleach as a highlight, the result appears to be drier, and as weeks go on, your hair could potentially break. Depending on the color of the natural hair and amount of gray, however, it may be possible. Hair that’s dark blond to lighter blond might take to a lighter blond shade if applied professionally. If you have 50% to 100% gray hair, you can lighten without bleaching—and the more gray there is, the prettier the blond. Any natural hair color level 6 and below cannot definitively be lightened to blond without bleaching. In these cases, highlighting may be the only thing that can get you a lighter result. 

In general, people with fair, thin skin that burns easily tend to have the least visible scarring, while people with darker, thicker skin that tans easily have an increased chance of developing thicker or darker scars. That said, some skin resurfacing techniques are not always recommended for darker skin types, while other surgical procedures are not usually impacted by skin type.

What is important when I am considering choosing a plastic surgeon? You want to be sure that the American Board of Plastic Surgery has certified the surgeon. This is the only Board recognized by the American Board of Medical Examiners that certifies surgeons in plastic surgery of the face as well plastic surgery of the entire body.

Is there any age too young or too old to consider cosmetic surgery? There are no specific age guidelines for cosmetic surgery, and each person needs to be evaluated on an individual basis. The psychological, as well as the physical maturity level, should always be taken into account when elective plastic or reconstructive surgery procedures are considered in young people. Healthy, active people can enjoy rejuvenation procedures well into their seventies, as long as they are medially cleared for surgery.

If I were a client and wanted to look like a certain film star, what would your advice be? We try to encourage people to consider what changes would be best for them based on their body type, skin type, and bone structure. While we are able to make great improvements and changes, plastic surgery is not magic and it is important for people to understand the limitations. First Quarter 2014

Patient Care Without Stress and Anxiety By Susan Wilinski, photo by Dan Epstein

I

magine counting down the days until your next dental appointment with cheerful anticipation. This appointment would be in an office that resembles a high-end salon or spa, without a sharp instrument, needle, or drill to be seen—an office where patients are not wondering when it will finally be over, but choosing instead to linger in reception chatting with staff. It may be hard to believe, but such a dental office exists. At its current location on South Livingston Avenue in Livingston, Gentle Caring Dentistry, under the leadership of practice owner Dr. Linda Stone, DMD, caters to the fearful patient by offering a comfortable and relaxing experience. “Our name represents our treatment philosophy,” Dr. Stone explains. “Patient comfort is very, very important to me. The office is specifically designed to not look like a dental office. It’s an elegant and soothing environment where the nervous patient is able to relax. Often, patients don’t want to leave; instead, they stay and talk and return again after their first visit.”

The waiting room walls are covered with original oil paintings and the seven treatment rooms, where dental instruments are kept out of sight, are equipped with flat screen televisions and iPods. Dr. Stone, who has been practicing for more than 25 years and is one of the first dentists certified in sedation dentistry, maintains that the number one cause of patient stress is the syringe, which she has eliminated in her office. “We use an instrument that looks like a magic wand and is very accurate in numbing patients,” she says. “We can get a single tooth numb without getting the whole face numb. We also use nitrous oxide to relax a patient before and during a procedure. It’s

a safe and effective way to eliminate anxiety and allow a patient to drive afterwards.” Eliminating anxiety allows Dr. Stone to specialize in another area of interest, cosmetic dentistry. “Patients who experience stress and anxiety avoid dental care, suffer socially, and don’t smile because of the condition of their teeth,” she says. “It’s important to have a beautiful, natural looking smile. I like to show each patient that he or she can obtain their dream smile.” Gentle Caring Dentistry is comprised of Dr. Stone and a staff of eight, consisting of three dental hygienists, three dental assistants, and two business managers. Dr. Stone is excited that the staff will expand by one more. “My daughter, Vanna, will be joining the practice this summer after she graduates from dental school.” The mother-and-daughter dental team know they will work well together. In addition to time that Vanna has already spent in the office, the two recently traveled to an African orphanage, spending two weeks teaching basics in dental care and techniques. Even with some changes ahead, Dr. Stone remains committed to Gentle Caring’s philosophy. “My biggest challenge is fulfilling my patient’s desires. We make sure patients feel cared for since it’s important to us that everyone enjoys their experience. Teeth are meant to last a lifetime. It is our job to help every patient achieve their goals.” 

PHOENIX:

One Destination, Three Ways By Judi Rothenberg

“ You can’t be all things to all people.” Really? Have you ever been to Phoenix?

I

’ve visited Phoenix with my extended family (ages 382), alone with my husband and with a group of girlfriends. There’s never a shortage of activities to keep us busy. Whether you’re looking for the spirit of the old west, a stellar golf course, sunshine, a grand resort with a decadent spa or innovative cuisine, the greater Phoenix/ Scottsdale area has much to offer for an ideal vacation.

Girlfriends

Shopper-tunities Take a break from the big guys and shop independently owned stores full of personality. At the Union section of Biltmore Fashion Park, boutiques showcase vintage-inspired women’s fashions, cutting edge eyewear, organic beauty products, gourmet olive oil, home accessories and a retro bike shop. Explore Old Town Scottsdale for souvenirs, art, and western wear. When hunger strikes, grab a bite at Rehab Burger; famous for their pretzel buns, sweet potato tots and crazy array of toppings (everything from peachhabanero bbq sauce to peanut butter and jelly). The Duce, a repurposed 1928 warehouse, is home to funky R & R Surplus, where “gritty meets pretty.” Pick up chic casual wear, a pair of classic PF Flyers or a1929 French ammunition bag studded with Swarovski crystals. R & R, is part of the Duce complex that also houses a turn-of-the-century soda fountain, a coffee bar, an old school gym, the Black Orchid Jazz Club and “Duchess,” a 1968 streamline camper that serves up comfort food. shopbiltmore.com/UNION, scottsdaledowntown.com, www.rehabburgertherapy.com
