A Friendship that

t Benefits Animals in Need By Lynn Spencer, photos by Dan Epstein

On a dark autumn night in Clifton, two women are faced with a 10-foot fence they need to climb over in order to rescue a stray kitten taunting them from the other side. They hop a shorter fence and peek inside an auto repair shop they are trapped behind, startling the young men inside. Shocked to find these women in their locked yard, the men nevertheless quickly agree to help the duo, guiding them over the fence and helped place the kitten, who had been tempted with a can of pork patĂŠ, into the open arms of the women, who soon reunite the kitten with her already-rescued mother and six siblings. lthough it may sound like a chaotic episode of a new reality show, it’s just another night of animal rescue for Amy Kozell and Trish Sebben-Krupka, two friends united in their passionate and at times daring efforts to save animals.

Amy Kozell, a lifelong Clifton resident, is a married mother of two and the energetic founder and president of Clifton-based Angels of Animals, a non-profit animal rescue group whose primary mission is the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of severely injured, abused or disabled animals. As a child, Kozell’s penchant for bringing home and “trying to help” strays; her eventual employment at various animal hospitals; and her volunteer work with the New Jersey-based rescue group, “START,” all led to her love for special-needs animals. “I set a goal for myself to create my own group because I saw how these special babies fell through the cracks because of the expense and extra work,” she says. In 2005, joined by fellow animal lovers Samantha Petritis and Joanne Hiberth, Amy formed Angels of Animals. Eventually the hand of fate—and a donation of baked goods—connected the trio with Belleville resident Trish Sebben-Krupka, a corporate chef, cookbook author, food blogger and caterer, who had just lost two of her beloved senior cats. “I just felt I needed to do something to honor their memory,” she recalls, and after seeing an article about a bake sale benefitting the organization, Trish spoke with Amy and quickly donated her macadamia espresso cookies and her famous peach pound cake to the sale. This heartfelt donation and a bonding over their mutual love of senior pets led not only to Trish and her husband Jim’s adoption of a 13-year-old formerly abused cat named Sydney from Angels of Animals, but also the eventual naming of Trish, who wholeheartedly threw herself into the cause, as Vice President/Fundraising Director of the group. 12

North Jersey Woman

Second Quarter 2013

“Trish is very driven in her compassion for animal rescue and extremely organized,” declares Amy, “and one of the strongest women I know. She is a very hardworking, loyal and wonderful person. When she puts her mind to something, it will happen, and it will be great.” The two women lead equally busy, but very different lives. While Amy’s kitchen often bursts with the happy chaos of her two children, Daniel, 10, and Kayla, 3½, her husband Rob and her own menagerie of rescued and special-needs animals, back at Trish’s kitchen, it may be lunchtime for “Pop”, her 92-year-old grandfather, along with her five-year-old niece Rebecca (Angels of Animals’ youngest volunteer), her husband, Jim, and their own fur family of animals. And while Amy may be picking up the kids from school, helping with homework or answering a multitude of animal-rescue e-mail and phone requests, Trish may be scheduling a cooking class she will teach, writing a vegan food blog on her Facebook page, or discussing a book signing date for her new book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide Greens Cookbook. Both, perhaps, can be found ferrying animals to and from the group’s beloved vet, Dr. Anthony Scriffignano. As group leaders, both women have set future goals for Angels of Animals. Says Amy, “My goals are to continue providing a service to our community with TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) programs, to teach others the importance of spay/neuter, rescue, and adoption programs, and to have an excellent fundraising program to allow us to continue to help animals in need.” Adds Trish, “In ten years, I hope that we will have built our base of donors and supporters to the point where we don’t have to worry where the money will come from for our next rescue project. Our mission is special, but also hard to look at. But rather than being the group that shows you sad pictures all day, we try to focus on the positive aspect of our work, and inspire our supporters with our success stories.” 

— From Cashier to CEO —

Judy Spires:

The Woman at the Helm of Kings Food Markets By Sherri Heller, photos by Dan Epstein

W

hen Judy Spires was a teenager in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, her father spoke words of wisdom to her that not only impressed the precocious teen, but also remain with her to this day: ”You can be anything you want,” he advised, “if you work hard, love what you do and get a good education.” Advice well-spoken and well-taken, indeed, because today Judy Spires is CEO and President of Kings Food Markets and loves her job now as much as she did when she first ventured into the retail food business as a cashier. A “Jersey girl” through and through and middle child of five, Spires credits her parents—a father who was a truck driver and a mother who was a stay-at-home mom—for giving her “a quest for excellence.” And Spires is the first to express how grateful she is for the opportunities she claimed as a woman in the male-dominated retail food industry. At every milestone in a remarkable career that spans more than 30 years, Spires has acknowledged her unique journey of discovery with a one-of-a-kind set of accomplishments, some exceptional workplace mentors, a fierce commitment to education and a loving and supportive husband.

WORDS of ADVICE

“ You can be anything you want, if you work hard, love what you do and get a good education.” —Judy Spires’s Father 20

North Jersey Woman

Second Quarter 2013

Judy Spires:

The Woman at the Helm of Kings Food Markets (continued from page 17)

“I started working for Acme as a cashier while I was in high school,” Spires says. “At the time, there were not any women in management, but I knew that is where I belonged and that somehow I would make it there.” Spires’ love for the food business fueled her desire to take every job opportunity from working the night shift to creating a floral department from scratch when she didn’t know a daisy from a daffodil. Spires’ commitment resulted in several Acme firsts for women—first produce manager, first assistant manager and first store manager. With diligence, a passion for dealing with customers and a steady trajectory of working throughout college, Spires became the first female management trainee her college graduation. Higher positions followed, including Vice President of Sales and Advertising, Vice President of Human Resources and Administration and Senior Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing, all of which led to her being named the President of Acme in 2006. I joined Kings Food Markets on April 1, 2010,” Spires explains. “I have always been an admirer of the brand and jumped at the opportunity when it was offered to me.” While at La Salle University as an undergrad, Spires met her husband Bob, whom she credits as her best friend and staunchest supporter. Giving back to the community is an important aspect of their lives. Spires sits on the Board of Directors at La Salle University, St. Joseph’s University Academy of Food Marketing and the New Jersey Food Council. Under her watch, Kings created the “Act Against Hunger” initiative that provides financial support to local community gardens that harvest fresh foods for donation to local soup kitchens and food banks. Additionally, Spires and her husband sponsor the Spires College Scholarship for Kings’ employees and their families.

Echoing her father’s advice, Spires’ son, Robert, who works in the financial department at Campbell Foods, also upholds the family belief in community involvement. Spires explains, “My son is a Board Member of the Young Variety, a children’s charity in Philadelphia, where he volunteers his time at events and venues to create opportunities for handicapped and special needs children. To see his dedication, focus and enthusiasm is immensely gratifying.” In her current position as CEO and president of Kings, Spires’ expertise and professional track record has found new focus, as under her watch, she has put into motion plans to grow the Kings brand. “First, I took a long, hard look at what the company was doing right and used it as the platform for the vision and strategy moving forward,” she explains. “I then established a five-year growth plan to double the size of the company, employing the three ‘B’s’: Build, Buy and Better. Using this strategy, I, along with my amazing team, launched a company-wide rebranding effort and developed the 21st-century store format. Since then, we’ve successfully opened four of the reformatted stores and created a three-year plan, currently underway, to update our portfolio.” Living the words of wisdom handed down to her by her father, Judy Spires has proved herself an industry trailblazer by building on Kings’ tradition of excellence to make this upscale grocery chain into a world-class destination for discerning shoppers. s

Q: Rather than taking fewer showers in the summer, is there a practical way for my family to reduce our water use? You can easily add a little item to your shower known as a “pause control valve.” Installed between the shower head and the shower arm, this device enables the bather to temporarily stop the flow of water while they lather up, thus conserving water. The quick flip of a switch turns the water back on again. Q: Can I add a hand shower to my existing shower, without invasive plumbing work? Yes and you actually have two options at your disposal: The first is to replace your existing showerhead with a hand shower by adding an accessory known as a “drop in, hand shower mount.” This device mounts to the end of the shower arm, creating a holder for the hand shower as well as the water that supplies it. If you want to conserve water, add a pause control valve, too! The second method is to install a “showerhead diverter valve,” which enables you to add a hand shower to your existing showerhead. This device mounts between the shower arm and the shower head, enabling you to switch back and forth between two fixtures that share the same water supply. Choose one that contains a cradle to hold the hand shower, or for a more permanent solution, choose a holder that mounts to the wall of the shower. Q: How do I choose a hand shower? There are so many choices! It’s true that there is a wide variety of hand showers on the market, in varying degrees of luxury and pricepoints. Some basic features to look for are multiple spray settings, easy-clean rubber nozzles and large-diameter spray faces. Whichever hand shower you ultimately choose, be sure to invest in a non-tangle, reinforced metal hose to avoid kinking and leaks.  For more great design ideas, contact her at: 973-857-1561; email, LM@LMDesignsllc.com. Ask the Organizer By Mary Carlomagno

E

ven the most organized people confront organizing challenges. For me, it is the 35 paint cans in my basement that represent the former owners paint choices and my recent choices. I just can’t seem to muster the interest to sort those out. Now, I know how my clients feel when they are confronted with a sticky organizing problem. Instead of getting caught up in the anxiety over the task at hand, try visualizing the final result to motivate you. It worked for me!

What can I do about my medicine cabinet madness? My good friend Judi Rosenthal, an extremely organized financial planner told me about her medicine cabinet which is a number of different sized and shaped items. My suggestion for unlike items is to house them in uniform boxes to create a monochromatic look. We chose Lucite boxes, which also help identifying items faster. The key for unmatched items is choosing one type of container, which will create visual unity, and a sense of things fitting, even if they are odd shapes and sizes.

How do I make bill paying less time consuming? Many of my clients are addicted to keeping paper. There is no reason, (you heard me zero!) to keep the stub of the PSEG bill or Macys bill you paid. Keeping records is all about proof and these two examples do not prove that any action was taken. If you were to provide proof of payment, you would electronically find the transaction or call the bank for the canceled check. This kind of record keeping is time consuming and unnecessary. Leave the files for important documents like contracts, leases and things that cannot be replaced or retrieved.

I bought this antique chair at a flea market for $2 and painted it blue with paint from my basement.

My foyer is a fiasco, how can I make it neat? The entryway of a home is often the most unkempt place, when in reality it is so easy to fix. Establish a “honey I am home” return by finding permanent headquarters for the things you need: key hook, cell phone docking station, table for bag and mail. If you create a consistent routine, you not only keep your first point of entry to your house neat, but also have an easier time getting out of the door when it is time to go. 

Have a nagging organizing challenge, post your question to my Facebook page and you may be featured in an upcoming article!

O

n Saturday, May 11, 2013, photographer Dan Epstein once again offered his “Pose for the Cure” event to area moms and their children to celebrate Mother’s Day. Since 2005, this nationally published photojournalist has been offering this Mother’s Day event to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure in memory of his mother, whom he lost to Breast Cancer in 1990. Moms and their children pose for one of Epstein’s heartwarming portraits, and in lieu of a sitting fee, make a donation of any amount they wish to the Foundation to help fund Breast Cancer awareness and education. This year’s event was graciously hosted by Shag86 salon and its owner Gerald Ferraro, in Little Falls. “I’ll do anything to support this cause, and am glad to support Dan with this event,” Ferraro stated. Additional sponsors of the event were North Jersey Woman Magazine and Carol Gambale of West Street Interiors.

This year a new exciting feature was added: readers were able to vote for their favorite portrait on the North Jersey Woman Magazine website, and the winner will receive gifts from several of the sponsors. This year’s winner is Chantelle Browne with her children Elise and Elijah. All of the participants’ portraits from this year’s event can be seen at www.NorthJerseyWoman.com. Highlights from previous years may also be viewed on Dan’s website: www.DanEpstein.com in the portrait gallery. This year’s event raised almost $1,000. And for moms who missed the May event, Dan has offered to donate a portion the sitting fee of any family portrait session made this summer to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Chemical Peels

Rejuvenate Skin Without Plastic Surgery By Nicole Canfora Lupo, photo by Dan Epstein

O

n the surface, the idea of a skin peel doesn’t sound appealing. But the noninvasive, economical treatment is rooted firmly in historical times. It’s been documented that even as far back as in ancient Egypt, Queen Cleopatra would frequently bathe in sour milk (which has lactic acid) to maintain her youthful look. Dr. Rosalie Curreri and the physicians and professionals at Mecca Integrated Medical in Fairfield can help you turn back the hands of time— minus the sour milk!—and start you on your journey to rejuvenation. Dr. Curreri is an expert in using Skin Medica peels and products and well versed in the best techniques to keep her clients looking as young as they feel. Together, you can reach your target goal.

Second Quarter 2013

What happens when you get a chemical peel? A chemical peel is a rejuvenating skin treatment that uses an acid solution to enhance the skin’s appearance. This is accomplished by helping the skin turn over old cells by removing the dead, damaged top layer, thereby helping the smoother, fresher cells reach the surface. Performed in the office, the procedure aims to help with the elimination of fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring and uneven skin tone. Although most frequently reserved for the face, it’s useful on other areas such as the décolleté, hands, arms and legs.

Who benefits from this type of treatment? The ideal candidate is any healthy person who has realistic concerns and wants to improve the appearance of their skin. The age may range from teens with acne outbreaks to middle-aged clients who develop spots from the sun or melasma (discoloration) from pregnancy, early fine lines and wrinkles to older clients who want to reduce age spots, soften wrinkles and treat scarring and unevenness in skin tone. As with all cosmetic procedures, it’s suitable for both men and women!

Which kind of chemical peel is right for me? There are different levels of chemical peels: light, medium and deep. Each uses a different chemical to achieve its target of a brighter, tighter more youthful appearing skin. At Mecca, we offer the SkinMedica line of peel products targeting every clients concern. Each peel accomplishes different goals and is suitable for

patients with different comfort and experience levels. The Illuminize peel is a lighter “intro” peel appropriate for all skin types and a good first step for anyone not familiar or apprehensive about the procedure. It is offered in conjunction with our relaxing facial for those interested. The Vitalize peel, which targets the epidermis, or superficial skin layer, uses the addition of retinols to help deepen the peeling process. This is a two-step peel appropriate to help reduce fine lines, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring and uneven skin tone. The Rejuvenize peel, although similar in function to the Vitalize peel, has an intense component of peeling acids and retinol. This is recommended only after a Vitalize peel has been tolerated or by doctor discretion. This target patient demonstrated the next level of skin imperfection. Following any peel an intense moisturizing cream is necessary to rehydrate and restore skin’s moisture balance. Additional SPF is a must and avoidance of direct sun exposure is also highly recommended.

How is it applied? The process for light and medium peels is similar. Patients should arrive makeup-free, as the face or area targeted is first cleansed and then the chemical solution is applied. It remains on the skin for a designated amount of time depending on the type of peel used and the quality of the skin, usually 8 to 10 minutes, during which time the skin may feel warm and tingly. The solution is then washed off or neutralized. Overall, the procedure lasts 15 to 20 minutes. Deeper peels require longer application times—from 1 to 2 hours— because of the use of pretreatment sedation and topical numbing medication. s

She now currently concentrates on aesthetic medicine, including Botox and filler injections, and practices in both New Jersey and New York. Do You Dream About Launching Your Own Big Bold Business? READ THIS FIRST By Joyce Restaino

Passionate? Check. Focused? Check. Motivated? Check.

Y

es, owning your own business sounds romantic, but it takes more than passion, focus, and motivation to be successful. The truth is, owning your own business is not for the faint of heart. If you’re like most start-ups, you’ll find yourself handling every aspect of running the business from marketing to selling to billing. If you think you’ll spend more time with your family, unfortunately, that’s not likely to happen. And if you’re a solo entrepreneur operating your business from your home, you’ll deal with isolation and the loneliness factor. Of course, there are legal matters to address, which start with naming your business and determining the best structure—sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC)—for your business. And if you’re operating a business from your home, you’ll want to check the local zoning laws. In addition, there are legal matters that tend to get overlooked because business owners don’t give them much thought. For instance, as a new business owner, you’ll want a website, so you’re most likely thinking about

who will develop it, design it, and write the copy. Before doing so, pay particular attention to Chapter 5, “Reduce Your Risks: Legal Advice for Your Business Life,” in the book Jersey Women Mean Business! Big Bold Business Advice from New Jersey Women Business Owners: Practical Pointers, Solutions, and Strategies for Business Success. In this chapter, Sandra L. Cohen, an attorney and partner at Epstein Cohen & Gilbert, says that to protect your business and keep your website up and running, you should own all code or software or have a license to use it; have your Web developer and/or designer transfer and assign all copyright ownership to you and state that he or she is not using someone else’s material; and post the terms and conditions that apply to your website, making sure that users agree to them. If you’re thinking about forming a partnership, Chapter 6, “Prenups—Not Just for Marriages,” by Geralyn Gahran Humphrey, the founder and principal attorney at The Humphrey Law Firm, is a “must” read. Humphrey points out the issues business owners

need to address before partnering. These include such money issues as start-up costs, future funding, and how the profits will be divided; percentage of ownership; titles and responsibilities of each partner; disaster planning; and an exit strategy, among others. To avoid problems—including ruined relationships—have a business agreement that protects the interests and investments of all involved parties. Yes, owning a business can be a dream come true, but to reap the rewards, understand the risks, realities, and responsibilities. For more advice and solutions for building and growing a business from 72 New Jersey women business owners, go to www.woodpeckerpress.com and click on the “our-books” tab to purchase the book. Varicose Veins Why They Worsen

and What to Do A

F

or men and women with varicose veins, summer is a very uncomfortable season, both emotionally and physically. The high heat and humidity call for shorter pants, skirts and dresses, not to mention swimsuits. Those with bulging or spidery veins often find showing their legs in public very difficult.

Compounding the problem, the very heat that makes one want to bare one’s legs actually worsens varicose veins. As Dr. David Greuner of Vein Centers of NYC Surgical Associates, with offices in New York City and West Caldwell, explains, “Varicose veins are caused by venous insufficiency, which means that the veins in the leg have trouble sending blood back to the heart. This is because valves in the leg veins which normally prevent the blood from flowing backward are damaged or missing. During the summer, the body tries to divert blood flow to the body’s surface as a cooling mechanism; skin is an important organ for temperature regulation. The increased amount of blood in the surface veins can cause them to dilate and swell, which can result in more pain.” Fortunately, there are two simple treatment options offered to patients seeking to treat this problem. Dr. Greuner performs a procedure called Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation (ERA). Unlike vein stripping, the painful and highly invasive procedure formerly performed to correct varicosity, ERA is minimally invasive and almost painless. A catheter with a special tip is inserted into the diseased vein. Using radio frequency energy, the tip gradually heats the vein to 120 degrees Celsius (248 degrees Fahrenheit), at which

point the vein closes down. Blood will then flow through the nearest healthy vein. Additionally, Dr. Greuner reminds patients that each body and anatomy is unique, therefore he and his team will work to create a treatment plan that is suitable for each individual. “Some patients have anatomy more suitable treatment with a laser, while others are ideal candidates for ERA treatment,” he explains. “My team and I will work to make that determination and develop the plan that is best for you.” Because only local anesthesia is used, patients can go back to work the same day. Exercise is encouraged right away, and flying is allowed after two weeks. The only

post-surgical requirement is wearing surgical support stockings for two weeks afterward. Dr. Greuner stresses that this is not simply a cosmetic procedure, although the cosmetic benefit is considerable. Venous insufficiency causes leg cramping, swelling and fatigue, as well as itching and burning sensations. In addition, the longer the condition is left untreated, the more veins will become diseased, causing the patient to feel worse over time. He urges varicose vein sufferers to consider ERA: “With such a safe and effective treatment available, there is no reason to suffer through another summer.”  Second Quarter 2013 NorthJerseyWoman.com

he loose, hanging skin on the upper arms can cause many women, including those who regularly exercise, to feel insecure. This issue, though not a health risk, can be repaired through a Brachioplasty, or arm lift, procedure. Here, Dr. Valerie J. Ablaza, M.D., a partner and Corporate Vice President of The Plastic Surgery Group, explains the procedure and answers your most basic questions.

I’m interested in having a Brachioplasty procedure. How can I determine if I’m a good candidate? Brachioplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed to eliminate hanging skin from the upper arms. When you come into the office for a consultation appointment, we will evaluate your upper arms to assess the amount and location of the fatty tissue as well as the degree of skin laxity. If the skin is loose and has poor tone, an arm lift is the only procedure that will lead to a significant contour improvement. Liposuction is commonly performed prior to Brachioplasty to maximize the aesthetic result. In patients with relatively good skin tone, liposuction alone may be all that is recommended for contour improvement.

What does the procedure entail? In a standing position, we mark the area of excess skin to be removed. We usually place the incision on the inner surface of the upper arm, where it extends from your elbow to your armpit. After the excess skin and fat is removed, the remaining skin is brought together and

Z

sutured and the incisions are covered with adhesive strips. We usually put drains beneath the skin before closure to eliminate excess fluid, depending on the amount of skin and fat removed. While you are still in the operating room, elastic bandages or some type of a compression garment is applied to help control swelling.

What are the risks of Brachioplasty? Will I have a scar? The scars from an arm lift are permanent and may be visible in any position other than when the arms are hanging at the sides. The pattern of the tissue to be removed is designed in such a way that the resulting scar cannot be seen from the front or back when your arms are held at your side. Incisions are sometimes made on the inner and under surface of your arm in a zigzag pattern for better healing. Women who have had a mastectomy are advised not to have an arm lift, since the surgery interrupts some of the lymphatic drainage and the combined procedures may cause the arm to swell permanently (lymphedema). People with a history of inflamed blood vessels in either arm should not undergo Brachioplasty. 

Answering Your Questions About

Hypnotism Photo by Dan Epstein

Kathleen M. Lindert of Advanced Hypnosis Counseling is an Advanced Certified Hypnotist and member of the National Guild of Hypnotists. She can be reached at www.AdvancedHypno.com.

What will I be asked during the initial interview? Some of the questions you will be asked are: What goals do you want to achieve? What will the elimination of these behaviors do for you? How will you know when you have achieved these goals? How will this impact your life? What new behaviors would you like to see yourself doing to help achieve these goals? Are you ready to change? May I help you obtain your goals so you can be free, happy and confident?

What happens to me when I’m hypnotized? The first thing that I want to make clear is that you are not out of control. Hypnosis is not mind control. You will remember what happens and you will not do anything that you would not

want to do. Some people think that they will be “zombie-like” and that is not even close to reality. Hypnosis is really a relaxed state of mind, and the only way that you can ever be hypnotized is by allowing yourself to relax. I will utilize and teach you techniques to help you overcome the stress or anxiety related to your situation. Then, together we agree on the new changes and I write it up in a script using new positive language with new ways that you will handle yourself and your life from now on. You hear exactly what I am going to say to you so you are much more relaxed from the start. We also let go of the past ways that you handled things. Your old behaviors have not helped you become happier, healthier, richer or sexier.

How do you hypnotize me? Are the results permanent? I hypnotize a person with my voice. It is like I am telling you a wonderful story all about you and the new way you are going to live, act and react. Because it is what you want, the changes can happen easily and

effortlessly. You hear a story and agree to the new ways you are going to live, act and react. How much better can that get? Your mind and body like the way they feel and because it is what you truly want, you give yourself permission to now be this way. You feel better, and because I record the session, you continue to reinforce these new ways every evening before you go to bed, allowing the changes to continue to grow and be a part of you easily and effortlessly. With some individuals, the suggestions work forever; with others, additional sessions will be needed to reinforce the new positive behaviors. The results of hypnosis are cumulative, and most of my clients see me for two to three sessions. The more you practice and listen to a personalized CD, the greater effect it will have on changing your old behavior and replacing it with the desired behavior. Your mind is like a sponge, so every time you listen or practice hypnosis, the new positive behaviors become more deeply entrenched in your brain, allowing the positive changes to happen so you can achieve your goals. 

Stylist Makes All the Difference

NORTH JERSEY WOMAN M

When I call to make an appointment at a salon, they tell me they have stylists at several different “levels,” but I don’t know what that means! Can you clear this up for me? Designed to highlight a hairstylist’s years of experience, the “level” system often indicates how much education they’ve had throughout their career. My advice to you on this matter is never to choose your stylist solely based on the best price. You may need to choose a higher-level stylist to ensure your hair is taken care of by the person who can best handle your hair type. Clients with more difficult hair types, such as super-curly, coarse, very frizzy or baby-fine, usually see better results from the shears of a stylist with more years under his/her belt. Your salon experience should be an amazing one, from start to finish, and when matched with the right stylist, this is usually the case. It’s also important that when you call to make an appointment, you are asked questions about you and your needs so the salon can match you with a stylist who is perfect for you.

I made an appointment with my stylist, and I want a new look, but I don’t know how to express to him/her what I want or if it will look good on me. What is the best way for me to explain to my stylist what I want? This is a very interesting question! Bringing a picture with you to a salon is a great idea, since it can give your stylist an idea of what you’re looking for, but always keep in mind that the person in the picture may have very different hair than you do. The thickness or texture of

A

G

Z

I

N

E

your hair and whether it’s wavy, curly or straight are all factors that need to be considered when you are bringing a picture. Also, face shape can play a big role in how a hairstyle will look. If your face is oval and the person in the image has a round face, the cut may need to be adjusted. The stylists I train are always taught that you should take the client’s ideas and infuse your knowledge and ideas to come up with a style that best fits the client. The stylist you choose should have enough expertise to describe to you in detail the looks that will be right for you, and most important, the looks that will not be right for your hair type or face shape. Putting your faith in a stylist’s opinion is a very important bond that you need to have, and trust is key.

I am considering a career in hairstyling, and I’m wondering: How will I keep myself fresh and excited about what I’m doing every day in the long term? This is such an easy question for me, because I am the biggest advocate for this field. I have been a hair designer for 17 years, and I would never have imagined in my wildest dreams that I would end up in a career where I’d never “work” a day in my life. It’s an amazing feeling when you love what you do. I can honestly say that doing hair and doing it well is a gift, and I have a passion for it that fuels me every day. Keep yourself fresh by constantly updating your education, keeping up with the current trends, and reviewing fashion. Always be able to give your clients exciting new ideas to consider. When you’re a stylist, you are a part of a team, a family—and there’s no limit to where you can take your career! 

t’s no secret that fresh air and exercise can do a body good. Combining the two, however, can be even better. In this area, hiking trails are plentiful, and there are distinct advantages to strapping on your hiking shoes and hitting the trials. In fact, for the average-sized adult woman, hiking can burn up to 370 calories per hour and can reduce her chances of an early death by up to 40 percent. Additionally, aerobic exercises such as hiking can improve your cardiovascular health, lower your risk of diabetes and certain types of cancers and even help you get a better night’s sleep. Here is a look at some of the area’s most popular hiking trails.

The Lenape Trail

Eagle Rock Reservation Loop, Essex County This loop hike circles the Eagle Rock Reservation, located on the border of West Orange and Montclair, consists of footpaths and unpaved roads, and ultimately reaches a panoramic viewpoint over the New York City skyline. This hike traverses the 408-acre reservation with 3.5 miles of trails and allows dogs on leases. The footpaths and dirt roads on this hike have gentle grades, and the is suitable for novice hikers and families.
