Ariella Cianni Ariella Cianni, one of the talented stylists at Shag86 of Little Falls, recalls that even from the very first day of work in May of 2004 as an assistant at the salon, the first at which she had ever worked, she was eager to be “the best at everything.” Today, she has clearly achieved that goal, honing her skills over the years side by side with the best stylists in the field in cutting, color, styling and more. During her career, she has trained with professionals at industry leaders such as L’Oreal, Wella, Wedkin and many others. “I still continue my education to this day,” she says, “and look forward to learning new things every time I go for training.” Once, when asked what she would be if she had the opportunity to change her career, she quickly responded, “I would never take that opportunity, because I love what I do so much, it would sadden me if I didn’t have this work in my life anymore.” Summing up, she says, “It’s the best feeling, knowing that my talent can change the way clients feel about themselves and having them feel their very best when they leave my chair.”

Potato & Parsnip Latkes with Smoked Sturgeon, Crème Fraîche and Fennel Fronds Top Chef judge, Gail Simmons, elevates the humble potato pancake to a gourmet treat. Traditionally served at Hanukkah, this version would also make an elegant hors d’oeuvre for New Year’s Eve. Simmons recommends pairing the latkes with Estancia Monterey County Chardonnay. 1 large baking potato (about ¾ pound), peeled and quartered lengthwise 2 medium shallots, peeled, trimmed and halved lengthwise 1 pound parsnips, peeled, trimmed, and halved or quartered, if large ¼ cup unbleached all-purpose flour 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 ½ teaspoons salt ¼ teaspoon baking powder Canola oil, for frying ½ pound thinly sliced smoked sturgeon, cut into small pieces ½ cup crème fraîche Freshly ground black pepper ½ cup finely chopped fronds and stems from 1 small fennel bulb Set a large strainer over a bowl. In a food processor fitted with the shredding disk, shred potato and shallots. Transfer to strainer; let stand 5 minutes. Meanwhile, shred parsnips. Squeeze excess liquid from potato mixture. Pour off all of the liquid in bowl, then add shredded potato mixture, parsnips, flour, eggs, salt and baking powder to bowl; stir to combine well. In a large skillet, heat 1/4 inch canola oil until shimmering. Spoon 2 tablespoons of the potato mixture into the canola oil for each latke, pressing slightly to flatten. Fry latkes in batches over medium heat, turning once, until golden and crisp on both sides, about 7 minutes total. Drain latkes on a paper towel-lined baking sheet. Serve warm topped with sturgeon, a dollop of crème fraîche, a pinch of pepper and fennel fronds.

f it is true that all business is global, then New Jersey has become a true worldwide connector thanks to the efforts of two innovative local women entrepreneurial organizations. Leading Women Entrepreneurs (LWE) and B.I.G. (Believe Inspire Grow) have teamed up to spread their women’s empowerment message to the world’s stage. At the end of July, LWE founder Linda Wellbrock and B.I.G. founder Tara Gilvar led a delegation from the two organizations on a retreat to Cork, Ireland in conjunction with the Irish non-profits Cork Innovates and the Cork Foundation. Other members of the New Jersey delegation included Alexandra Zetlin of Zetlin Strategic Communications, Karolina Dehnhard of Budd Larner, Susan Ascher, President of The Ascher Group, Liz Swinicki, founder of Pravda Consulting, Caroline Gosselin, founder of The Gosselin Group at Prominent Properties Sothebys International Realty, and Terry Tateossian, founder of Social Fix. Their goal was to lend a hand to the nascent field of Irish women entrepreneurs by serving as mentors, advisors and ambassadors to the women seeking to grow, scale and fund their business ventures. “We live in an amazing time,” Wellbrock says. “While people can connect in seconds using the Internet, there is no substitute for meeting like-minded entrepreneurs face-to-face. The bonds that we forged in Ireland will last a lifetime, enriching us both personally and professionally.” Gilvar adds, “The resources that we have available in the United States are brand new to the Irish business community. It was so inspiring to see the seeds of entrepreneurship take hold. I am confident that this trip was just the beginning of our journey together.” While in Ireland, the New Jersey professionals led a session during which ten Irish female entrepreneurs

pitched their businesses, à la Shark Tank. Dee O’Leary of iDME Wristbands (a unique identification tool) was selected among the talented group of participants to travel to the greater New Jersey area in December to meet with key individuals who can assist in the development of her company within the United States. The dynamic O’Leary will be one of the honorees at LWE’s Top 25 event on December 4th at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club in Bedminster. The Mayor of Cork County and the Executive Director of Cork Innovates will be in attendance at this event along with over 350 business leaders, entrepreneurs and media, a true testament to the strength of the relationships made during the retreat. The event is open to the public. The trip to Ireland was the second “Her Business World Global Retreat,” sponsored by LWE and B.I.G. This worldwide initiative allows American women-owned business owners to offer advice and network with other female entrepreneurs around the world. In 2013, the first retreat was held in Norway. Recognizing that the rapidly-growing female entrepreneurial market was being underserved, New Jersey native Wellbrock founded LWE in 2011. With its roots steeped in principles of innovation, market potential, community involvement and advocacy for women, LWE has grown into a nationwide female entrepreneur resource network. For more information about LWE or to purchase tickets to the Top 25 event ($150), go to www.lweworld.com. B.I.G. is a business support, education and networking organization that seeks to empower women. Started in 2009 in Gilvar’s Berndardsville living room, B.I.G. now has “pods” (chapters) in six states and continues to grow. To learn more about B.I.G., visit www.believeinspiregrow.com.

Meet Our Board Cer tified* Periodontist Dr. Samantha Aaron Where do you live: Livingston, NJ Family: Married with daughter, Taylor

How does your background reflect the Silverstrom philosophy?

What lessons did you learn during your educational journey?

My years of education studying the human body and how it works enables me to help prevent and treat disease through proper oral health—this is important to our team. Complete health dentistry is a core philosophy at The Silverstrom Group. The mouth is a portal to your body and it is important for doctors to understand and incorporate that into their practice.

The most important lesson I learned is how important it is to have a comprehensive understanding of all the fields besides your specialty of choice. If you are a periodontist, make sure you understand the concepts and practices of prosthodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery and every other aspect of the dental field. This is the best way to make sure your patients receive the best care possible.

What drew you to periodontal care? Helping others improve their health through treatment and management of disease motivates me. For me, periodontics was the most interesting way to achieve this. Since periodontal care is the foundation to dental treatment, I can educate patients and help them improve their lifestyle, which in turn will keep them healthier and happier. This is so rewarding.

What are your strongest contributions to The Silverstrom Group experience? I bring my extensive knowledge of periodontics and surgery and collaborate with two extraordinarily talented, passionate dentists. The result is restoring health and function to a patient’s mouth through comprehensive care all under one roof. It’s a

life-changing process. Using our advanced technology to diagnose and treat disease and accurately place implants leads to a better patient experience.

How do you balance work and home life? Balancing work and home life is difficult now that I am a mother. You want to do everything well. My advice is to give your all to everything you do, but try not to be too hard on yourself. Believe in yourself that you are doing a good job. There are several factors that motivate me, which include how much I love what I do, how important working is to me, and being a role model for my daughter. That passion helps me find my balance. As a result, I feel I am a better mother, wife, and doctor, roles that continue to keep me motivated.

*Only 50 % of periodontists in America are board certified.

Don’t Pin your Hopes to a Quick Fix With back pain on the rise, the number of physicians performing back surgeries and procedures has also increased, making Failed Back Syndrome (FBS) all too common. Don’t put yourself at risk. Know what to look for when choosing a spine specialist. Only trust a qualified neurosurgeon to diagnose and treat your delicate spine. At Atlantic Neurosurgical Specialists (ANS), all of our neurosurgeons are board-certified. Most notably, 5 of ANS’s neurosurgeons are fellowship-trained in spine and hold national recognition in their specialty. In turn, ANS remains the largest and most reputable neurosurgical practice in New Jersey. Don’t let insurance come before your health. Call to speak with our insurance counselor. One Woman’s

“AMERICAN DREAM” Holds Lessons for Us All… By Diane Haase, photos by Dan Epstein

V

ilma Mueller is the Director of the Office of Graduate Studies at Caldwell University, a gem of a campus located off Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell. Mueller’s path to graduate academia has been neither linear nor conventional, but her responses to life’s game of chutes and ladders offer inspiring lessons for any career stage— beginning, off-track, dormant or soaring.

One Woman’s “American Dream” Holds Lessons for Us All… (continued from page 17)

Mueller grew up in the Dominican Republic during the 1960s and “circumstances were such that my mother did not make it past the eighth grade. But, she always had the desire to do more.” As a single mother of four, one with severe mental challenges, Mueller’s mother found a way “to work from home as a seamstress and also to buy and resell women’s clothing.” Her mother always emphasized education, even with limited means. Married at 18, Mueller moved to Santo Domingo and landed a job at Citibank. At night she completed her undergraduate degree in economics at Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Urena. When Mueller’s boss at Citibank became the Superintendent of Banks she joined him. She then became an assistant to an economic advisor “working in the Presidential Palace, surrounded by high-level people.” During this period, at age 22, Mueller also gave birth to her daughter, Claudia. Early parenthood taught her “how to manage time and responsibilities at an early age—when friends were going to clubs.”

Serious about pursuing her dream of a graduate degree and joining her brother in the United States, Mueller and her family immigrated in 1984. Although she did not know much English, she landed an assistant’s job at a corporate bank on Wall Street. Working by day, and raising Claudia at night, Mueller improved her English by listening to Tom Brokaw’s nightly news report. After a few years at CIBC, Mueller was passed over for a higher position. Rather than treading water, she decided to accept another job at a menswear company using her bilingual language skills.

“Excellent service is what makes you unique. It is simple but difficult to achieve in any industry.”

—Vilma Mueller

All went well until retail downsizing and a mugging sent her in search of a safer, cheaper place to live, in Dumont, NJ. By 1990 her husband’s business and her marriage had dissolved. Single and unemployed, Mueller needed a job. She answered an ad for an assistant to a General Manager at the White Beeches Golf and Country Club. With a wide-eyed chuckle, Mueller remembers, “I had never been to a country club before…it reminded me of a funeral home with a restaurant.” She accepted the job assisting a laconic, pipe-smoking GM at half the salary of her previous position. Little did she know what would transpire from this seemingly backwards move. Professionally she learned that “excellent service is what makes you unique. It is simple but difficult to achieve in any industry.” Personally, she learned something else. Unaware of the effects of her gracious charm and dimpled beauty, Vilma heard from a third party that her boss, Bob Mueller, had been seriously in love with her for some time. They married and to this day she

describes Bob as “the angel by her side, her biggest fan, mentor and ally.” After 9 years of working various management positions in the country club industry, Mueller decided to revisit her dream of a graduate degree. Though it was hard to forgo the salary and perks, Mueller knew she had more to accomplish. With a daughter at Georgetown (who went on to become a Pediatrician Neonatologist) and Bob’s two kids also in college, Mueller needed funding for her degree. Again, she applied for an administrative position, this time at Fairleigh Dickinson University near her home in New Milford. It wasn’t long before she was whisked away to the Department of Hospitality, to assist and then teach. Earning her Masters in Hospitality at FDU she then became the Director of Professional Development for the International School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management.

Since 2000, Mueller has worked in varying capacities in Admissions, first at Felician College and then for the last seven years at Caldwell University. At CU, Mueller started as Senior Admissions Counselor and now serves as the Director of Graduate Studies. She is also head of the Associate Program of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Caldwell, a program that supports the humanitarian work and social services of the Dominican sisters. Mueller is “humbled” and “grateful for her opportunities in life.” She understands the adult student because she has faced all the same issues: juggling work, school, family, limited finances, and stopping and starting. Mueller recommends to “get the right credentials and be realistic about your energy and resources. How will you pay for this?” Most importantly, she says, “use what you have.” Vilma Mueller has done just that, and then some. Fall 2014

A Sparkling Home

for the Holidays

By Ruth A. Bollo, Clean It Right Photo by Dan Epstein

Y

ou want your home to sparkle, especially during the holidays. Here are a few short cuts to cut cleaning time and get your home germfree and shining this holiday season.

Effective dusting is the first step to shining. You want to get to get rid of dust, not just spread it around. Most experts recommend dusting before vacuuming. Invest in a good ostrich feather duster. Chicken feathers or artificial feathers are not the same. The tiny barbs on long thick ostrich feathers really do hold onto the dust. They’re also perfect for dusting electronic screens and not creating static cling. A good ostrich feather duster can be washed and gets better with age. Drag the duster across the surface and then bang it on your ankle so the dust drops to the floor where you can vacuum it up. Do not use the feather duster on light bulbs especially while bulbs are on and hot. If you haven’t dusted in a while (you know who you are) start by wiping down the surface with a barely damp microfiber cloth. Microfibers are electrostatically charged to attract dust. Dirty cloths can be tossed into the washing machine to clean. Start at the top of a room and work down. Clean the cobwebs out of the corners and dust the molding and baseboards. Don’t forget the blinds and ceiling fans, which have special dusters. Dust all the hard surfaces of the room. On picture frames and other glass surfaces, use a window cleaner, then dry them with a dry paper towel or microfiber cloth.

A good ostrich feather duster can be washed and gets better with age.

Holidays are a great time of year to shine up your chandeliers. Always make sure the light fixture is off and never spray any cleaner directly onto the light fixture. Instead, use a pre-moistened wipe like Windex. Gently clean the crystals and bulbs. Dry the bulbs with a dry paper towel and wait about ten minutes before turning on the fixture. The clean bulbs bounce the light that adds to the reflection of the clean crystals. Finish off carpeted floors with a good vacuuming or dry mop hardwood floors with a microfiber or Swiffer duster.

ost people don’t rush to make an appointment to visit the dentist. In fact many patients try to avoid it for as long as ADV I S OR possible due to the fear and anxiety that is associated with NORTH JERSEY WOMAN M A G A Z I N E having dental work. Many people have had negative experiences in the past and anticipating painful anesthetic injections can cause patients to lose sleep the night before their appointment, make them feel physically ill and even cause them to cancel appointments despite desperately needing the work done. Dental phobia is a very real condition, and dentists like Dr. Linda Stone of Gentle Caring Dentistry in Livingston realize the need for a better way to anesthetize their patients. With the use of The Wand, Dr. Stone can eliminate painful syringe injections from office visits, ease patient anxiety and actually encourage people to have the necessary dental work done. Gentle Caring Dentistry

Dr. Linda Stone

What is The Wand? It is a computer controlled delivery system that uses a pen like plastic hand piece. It truly works like a “magic wand.” It is an injection system that conquers fear, pain and anxiety by delivering anesthesia underneath a patient’s detectable pain threshold. There is no syringe or discomfort. The reason patients feel pain when receiving a conventional syringe injection is not the actual needle but the build up of anesthesia volume in their tissues. The wand eliminates this problem by delivering a precisely controlled amount of anesthesia over time that is imperceptible by patients and therefore painless.

Why have you chosen to use The Wand? I really care about my patients, especially those who might be anxious or fearful of dental procedures. One of my goals is striving to erase any negative experiences patients have had in the past. Prior bad experiences, especially in childhood, usually start with ‘the shot’ and for that reason I have eliminated the syringe in my office. I think the syringe ranks at the top of the list of the most dreaded dental instruments, it is the number one cause of stress and the biggest source of anxiety for patients. By utilizing The Wand system I am able to provide my patients with painless injections and the highest quality of care. The Wand is profoundly changing the practice of dentistry and more practitioners should embrace this technique. Not every dentist uses this technique, but they should.

201 South Livingston Avenue, Suite 2C, Livingston, NJ 973-994-3112 www.gentlecaringdentistry.com

Do you feel that The Wand decreases patient anxiety about anesthesia? Absolutely! After only a single experience with The Wand, a patient’s fear levels decrease tremendously. It is a wonderful feeling when a patient tells you, “that was the best injection I’ve ever had” or “I didn’t feel a thing!” It clearly demonstrates a strong preference for a computerassisted injection versus a conventional syringe. Patients are amazed that I can work on a single tooth without them feeling any pain or diffuse numbness. Patients love that they are able to have feeling in their lip and tongue. You no longer have to leave your dental appointment feeling like your face is fat, numb or tingling.

What do you tell patients about what they can expect to experience? It is a whole new world, no pain, no lingering numbness, and the peace of mind that the syringe is in the past. The Wand is very accurate in getting patients numb without feeling any pain, every time. It can numb a single tooth without anesthetizing the whole lip or face, which is not possible with the traditional syringe injection. A lot of times with the syringe, if the doctor has to work on a lower tooth, the lip gets numb and feels “fat” for hours. The patient has difficulty speaking and eating and cannot wait for the Novocaine to wear off. With The Wand, they don’t experience the lingering numbness of the tongue, lips and face. Fall 2014

ADV I S OR BEAUTY IN BALANCE: NORTH JERSEY WOMAN A Common Sense Approach to Cosmetic Surgery & Treatments M

A

G

A

Z

I

Dr. Valerie J. Ablaza, partner at The Plastic

Surgery Group, PA in Montclair answers common questions about abdomen liposuction and tummy tuck procedures.

How does one remove stretch marks on their abdomen?

After having a liposuction procedure is it possible to have a tummy tuck later?

Unfortunately there are not any good procedures or treatments for eliminating stretch marks on any part of the body. Though, with a tummy tuck you can eliminate the stretch marks below the navel since this is the area of skin and fat this is discarded during surgery.

Yes, many people have had a tummy tuck six months to even six years later. It is sometimes intentionally planned that way in order to decrease the overall abdominal gift before having a tummy tuck. Liposuction and a tummy tuck cannot be performed at the same time, as the circulation of the tissues may be compromised and have a negative effect on healing.

How does one determine whether liposuction or a tummy tuck the better treatment? If you have had at least one full-term pregnancy or have had a large weight loss with a moderate degree of loose or overhanging skin along your lower abdomen, the better result would most likely be a tummy tuck. Liposuction alone will only remove the excess fat but will have no effect on the loose skin. Ideal candidates for liposuction are those that are close to their ideal body weight and have not been able to improve the contour of their abdomen through diet and exercise.

How common is it to need a touch up after liposuction? It is sometimes necessary to remove more fat from an area after a liposuction procedure to even out imperfections or irregularities. Though, we usually wait at least six months after all the swelling has subsided and the tissues have settled before performing any revisions.

After fat is removed through liposuction, will it come back? Removal of fat cells is permanent and they will not be replaced by other fat cells. However, existing fat cells may increase in size and or multiply in rare cases. By keeping your weight within a reasonable range after the surgery, you should be able to maintain your improved figure.

Dr. Jay Chun of Atlantic NeuroSurgical Specialists (ANS) Discusses the ANS Spine Center What is the ANS Spine Center? The ANS Spine Center offers a variety of surgical and nonsurgical treatments. We consist of several highly specialized experts, including board certified neurosurgeons. With the collaboration of subspecialized, fellowship-trained physicians, patients are guaranteed to receive the treatment that best suits their individual needs.

ANS performs the most minimally invasive spine surgeries in the state of New Jersey and we are proud to be one of a few practices nationwide participating in a national outcomes database which carefully monitors outcomes in spinal care. ANS understands that we must shift the focus and incentive away from the volume and profitability of services provided and replace it with patient outcomes. Medical and surgical spine care is, above all, aimed at improving a patient’s health status and quality of life. The ANS Spine Center is always looking to evolve our understanding of what works and what doesn’t in each setting for each individual patient. This powerful tool helps to further identify the right treatment, in the right patient, at the right time.

Why should a patient suffering from neck or back pain come see you? I have dedicated my career and research to treating and advancing the care of patients with disorders of the neck and spine. We are constantly pushing the envelope with the newest treatment options. Comfortable with standard open approaches and minimally invasive techniques, our patients benefit from more than a “one size fits all” approach. Our team can decide which option is best for that person without the limitation of one specific specialty.

Is a neurosurgeon the right specialist to diagnose a neck or spine disorder? Getting answers about the cause of your neck or back pain can be challenging. The sooner you have an accurate diagnosis, the sooner you can begin the treatment plan that works for you. It may be a nonsurgical approach or a minimally invasive procedure. Either way, a board certified,

fellowship- trained surgeon is the most qualified specialist to provide an accurate diagnosis. Neurosurgeons focus on the neck and spine throughout their entire education. We are specifically trained to treat the intricacies of the spine and surrounding nerves. Additionally, those of us who are fellowship trained in spine spend 8 years in surgical spine training while mastering the art of diagnosis.

You specialize in the treatment of the cervical spine. Can you tell us more about this focus? The cervical spine, or neck, has some of the most important bones in the body. It is a critical region since it controls everything below the neck. Injury to the cervical region can be catastrophic. The cervical spine is responsible for supporting the head and allowing it to move, as well as controlling many key areas of the upper and lower body, including the arms, legs, bowels, and bladder. The most common chronic problems affecting the cervical spine are disc herniation and spondylosis. In both conditions, the discs that normally cushion the bones and joints of the spine become damaged and displaced and can press on surrounding nerves or the spinal cord, causing pain, numbness, and weakness. The majority of patients with cervical spine disorders can manage their symptoms without surgery. When surgery is needed, the two most common types of cervical spine surgery are decompression or fusion. Decompression surgery removes the disc, ligament, or bone that’s pressing on the nerve or spinal cord, and fusion surgery stops the movement between two bones. Most patients can return to work a few weeks after surgery. For some who opt for minimally invasive surgery, the surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis with rapid return to daily function. While spine surgery cannot always resolve all symptoms, the surgeries in the cervical spine are some of the most successful that we have. The benefits include not only managing the symptoms but also limiting the chances of continued degeneration or a future major spinal cord injury. In the past decade, spine surgery has become much less invasive and safer thanks to advances in minimally invasive techniques, spinal instrumentation, artificial discs, and the materials that promote spine fusion. Hair Stylist Ariella Cianni Discusses Hair-Care

riella Cianni knows her way around a head of hair. She was worked at fashionforward salon Shag86 in Little Falls for over a decade, rising to the level of Master Designer. Here, the cut-and-colorist extraordinaire discusses the latest trends, the best tools, and no-fail tips for dealing with a bad-hair day. What are the latest trends in hair-styling?

Spray-painting color onto hair is definitely very trendy. Color is air-brushed onto hair with a special tool instead of traditional dye brush. Now that it is fall, I see a lot of warmer tones, like copper, gold, and red-orange. At the same time, I am getting a lot of requests for neon colors; it’s like the ‘90s are back again.

Are there any cuts that will always be in style? The bob will never go out of style; it just keeps reinventing itself. This year’s bob looks great on every face shape. The bottom is still squared, but the interior layers are softer than in the past.

What are the hair-styling tools that every woman should own? No woman should be without a Mason Pearson brush. This is a pocket-sized dry brush that gives hair the most beautiful shine you can imagine. It gets rid of knots and actually makes hair look fuller. Another essential tool is a nozzle for

What are the most common hair-care mistakes you see? The biggest mistake I see is women washing their hair too frequently. Women really should not wash their hair more than three times a week, or even fewer times if their hair is coarse or gray. Shampoos, even natural ones, contain chemicals that may remove healthy oils from the scalp. If a woman feels that her hair needs to be washed more often, a better solution is dry shampoo, as many minerals in shower water can be hard on hair. Another common mistake women make is combing out wet hair from the root. It’s better to start from the bottom of your hair, work your way up to mid-shaft, and then finally comb out the hair near the scalp. This is an easier way to work out knots, which minimizes breakage.

And finally, what can women do when they can’t do anything with their hair? If you’re having a bad-hair day, the quickest solution is to put your hair in a loose ponytail (use a scrunchy or other band that won’t leave a crease in your hair), put it on top of your head, and leave it there for five to 10 minutes before coming back to it. This calms down the hair, which makes it easier for you to start again. For the worst-case scenario, invest in some cute clips or headbands and remember that ponytails are in style anyway.

the blow-dryer. A nozzle directs and concentrates the flow of air, which means you can dry your hair more quickly. Since the drying process takes less time, there is less danger of singeing your hair.

GRACE:

New England’s Hidden Gem

By Louise B. Hafesh

T

hese are fast times we live in. When it all gets to be too much to handle, we cope with the frantic pace by escaping for a change in scenery and the sanity of a quick fix. If business and other commitments permit, one can throw caution to the wind and run away to an exotic location where the sun always shines. More often than not, however, a weekend romp closer to home is what’s realistic. Relax; from a wondrous escape in bucolic Washington, Connecticut, relief is in reach. Start packing, kiss your job goodbye (for now) and get ready for a great breakaway weekend,

Getting away from it all…

Situated beyond the typical tourist track amidst 58 pristine acres of the Steep Rock Private Reserve, The Mayflower Grace is a stately English-inspired resort. that features 30 different accommodations in four charming cottages each impeccably decorated and within walking distance of the Main Inn. Happily ensconced adjacent to the Spa House with easy access to its wondrous amenities, my escape partner and I couldn’t have been more pleased with our pick of those lodgings. For starters a huge four-poster canopied bed with Frette linens, fluffy pillows and comforter, a dreamy setting straight out of

every travel fantasy, dominated the room. An inviting fireplace warmed our sprits with the flick of a switch, while a stocked library of bestseller books and picturesque coffee table treasures beckoned, along with a delightful porch. The porch would become our favorite hangout into the wee hours as we shared a post dinner glass of wine, enjoyed each other’s company and the beauty of nature’s tranquil splendor. Losing no time stashing our bags and getting to that luxurious spa rated No 1 by Travel and Leisure Magazine, we donned our exercise gear and were on our way to being soothed into serenity.

Replenish, rethink, and reflect…

The Spa is a wonder to behold, a luminous architectural masterpiece and haven of hospitality and relaxation. Once inside, private cubbies are provided and guests can slip into robes and slippers. You are then escorted to the garden room to await your treatment. Here, we lounged in Chenille blanketed comfort sipping delicious herbal tea refreshment. As seasoned spa-goers, my husband and I have enjoyed stays at the best of them. Suffice to say, this one ranks outstanding! It houses seven tranquil treatment rooms—even one for couples, offering an extensive range of therapies, salon services and programs, including yoga, Pilates and a daily roster of activities ranging from hikes and nature walks to cardio fitness classes. Seduced by our choice therapies, hubby took a massage, my splurge was a facial, after which we met up again in the lounge, and with soothing music in the background, a vista of rambling woods and Blue Heron Pond to the front, delighted in all the niceties–sights, scents, and sounds of this enchanting space.

About town…

And the good things don’t stop there. Should you decide to venture off property, there’s much to see in Litchfield Hills and its environs. According to the local Historic Commission, the town of Washington is one of the most unspoiled and attractive towns in Connecticut. History buffs will love the fact that it looks much as it did a hundred years ago, with many of its original homes intact. If art and antiquing are your thing, the area is renowned as: “America’s antiques capital.” Nearby Preston and

Woodbury are dotted with fine antiques shops and Kent, a short thirty-minute drive, is known for its collection of fine art galleries. For a great night on the town, New Milford will entice music lovers and theatre goers with varied offerings and the Bantam Cinema, the oldest continuous running movie house in Connecticut is a mere fifteen minutes away. Check with the front desk for programs and an array or other local activities like golf, horseback riding, and car races, even ballooning! It goes without saying that you will be eager to enjoy some fine dining. For that, look no further than your home base. The Mayflower’s restaurants are in a class by themselves. We relished an evening meal at ‘Muse by Jonathan Cartwright,” created by its acclaimed namesake and Grand Chef-Relais & Chåteaux. The casually elegant restaurant overlooks the meticulously hedged Shakespeare Garden. Its menu is creative and hearty showcasing modern European cuisine that incorporates the best of local and seasonal produce. The Tap Room, our election for breakfast and lunch, serves lighter fare. Their hand cut rosemary fries are to die for! It’s always a thrill to discover a great getaway, a magical refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life that oozes charm, culture, comfort and care. The Mayflower Grace is just such a place. Taking you beyond the ordinary, it truly is an unexpected find and one of America’s great hidden gems.
