or nita novy, owner of the boutique nita Ideas in Millburn, fashion design was not her first career path; after college she enjoyed a successful acting career, with roles in numerous Broadway shows. By the time her second child was born, though, she was ready to move on. Fashion was a logical next step; novy had always been drawn to the costume department of whatever show she was appearing in. She explains that “Since I was young, I had a thing for fabrics—I was always draping and wrapping.” novy’s new career officially began in 1989 when she sold 25 original hats to Barneys new York. She had also been designing clothing for her own children, so her first stores featured kidswear. as her children grew up, so did her designs: “I had been designing Bat Mitzvah dresses, and the mothers of —nita the girls began asking me about creating something for them to wear as well.” as novy’s design reputation grew, so did her digs. She ultimately phased out the children’s clothing to concentrate on the sumptuous specialoccasion outfits she was becoming known for. Since her first store opened in Millburn in 1991, she has moved twice within the town and nearly quadrupled her space. nita Ideas is now a full service, in-house design studio. The top floor of her current building is where the dresses, which she designs, are actually made by what she calls “my wonderful team of technicians.”

Her couture dresses are essentially one-of-akind. She notes that “We have almost 1,000 patterns and never throw one away. We might use a pattern twice, but we would make changes—in the beading, for instance—so that each dress is unique.” also one-of-a-kind are novy’s bridal gowns. She says, “We do bridal differently; if you want a traditional white gown and a veil, I’m probably not the designer for you.” Her clients tend to have alternative weddings or else are second-time brides looking for a more colorful dress. novy is a fan of old-style glamour: “I always design with the fantasy of traveling on the Orient express.” She uses such traditionally luxurious fabrics as shantung silk and iridescent silk taffeta in her couture piecnovy, owner es but also takes advantage of technological advances in the fashion industry: “Stretch with silk has really revolutionized both our corsetry and our suiting.” In addition to haute couture, nita Ideas also carries career suits and sportswear, not to mention a huge array of accessories. novy says, ”We have an extraordinary inventory; everything from Minimalist to Baroque. I work with lots of designers on shoes, wraps, belts, bags and jewelry. When a woman leaves here, all she will need to complete her look is lipstick.” s

“I always design with the fantasy of traveling on the Orient Express.”

HealtH & Beauty By Julie Jacobs

diet & exercise are Key For

HealtHy Bones

t

o support and protect—that’s the job of the human skeleton’s 206 bones. It’s a lifelong task that requires bones to continually rebuild themselves, forming new cells and strengthening weak spots. and like most body processes, this “reconstruction” slows down with age, sometimes with adverse results. Statistics show that one in two women and one in four men over 50 will suffer a fracture from osteoporosis, a chronic condition characterized by low bone density and deficits in calcium and other minerals that render bones brittle and highly breakable. Bone density is measured as a t-score via low-radiation x-ray. a t-score below -1 is cause for concern and requires medical consultation. Fortunately, you can reduce your chances of developing osteoporosis by eating well and exercising regularly.

Food-wise

Ingesting enough calcium, along with Vitamin D, is critical to bone health. But how much do you need and what foods offer these valuable nutrients? according to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), which revised its long-standing recommendations in 2010, adults 19 to 50 need 1,000 mg of calcium daily and 1,200 mg daily for adults 51 and over. For children, the suggested dietary allowance is 700 mg

between one and three years of age; 1,000 mg between four and eight; and 1,300 mg between nine and 18. For Vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium, the IOM recommends 600 Iu per day from age one to 70. This figure increases to 800 Iu for those over 70. Dairy products and leafy greens (both cooked and raw) are particularly high in calcium and Vitamin D, so incorporate items like low-fat or fat-free yogurt, milk and cheese and vegetables like broccoli, spinach and kale into your diet. Other good sources include salmon, sardines, oysters, lean chicken and beans. you can also include whole-grain breads and pastas, which provide magnesium, another mineral that helps maintain bone strength. But because whole grains can interfere with calcium absorption, experts advise not eating them simultaneously with calcium-rich foods. and stay away from caffeine, sugar and high protein as much as possible, as they can actually cause the body to excrete calcium. If you’re unable to get enough calcium and Vitamin D from your diet, supplements and herbs may provide a solution and can be purchased at health food stores and some drug stores. Chocolate chews such as Viactiv contain calcium as well as Vitamin D. take the suggested dosage, ideally at a time

of day when you have not just eaten foods high in calcium. as for herbs, try adding alfalfa, barley grass, dandelion root, nettle or parsley to your diet. They can be taken in various forms, all of which help build bone.

exercise-wise

Believe it or not, bones last longer if you place greater stress on them. Weight-bearing routines that involve weight lifting, walking, running, hiking and dancing are best for strengthening bones. These activities, done three to four times a week, have been shown to boost bone density in the upper body and upper thighs, which are particularly prone to fractures when bones are weakened. While any exercise is better than no exercise, people with osteoporosis should not use excessively heavy weights or engage in overly vigorous activity, which can put them at a higher risk for fractures. What cannot be stressed enough is that a focus on building healthy bones is advantageous at any age, the younger the better, of course. and whenever you begin an exercise regimen, or choose to add herbs or supplements to your diet, speak with your physician first to ensure that you make the right decisions for your health. s For more information: e-how.com, kidshealth.org, livestrong.com, webmd.com November 2012  MyVicinityMagazine.com 33

Mist Opportunity

t’s tricky to reapply face makeup, especially powder, and not end up with a cakey, lifeless complexion. For a fresh look, without washing your face, try using a facial mist—such as evian’s mineral water spray. When you spray it on, leave it for a minute and then blot lightly with a tissue; letting it evaporate actually dries out your skin. Then touch up your makeup as usual. For extra hydration, try using a facial mist before you moisturize in the morning (you don’t have to blot your face as long as you apply the moisturizer right after you mist). This is a great supplement if you’re prone to pimples and using a medicated cream, which can sometimes dry out skin.

How to ‘Hand-San’

fter a long day of holiday shopping at the mall, you can’t help thinking about the sales person at the register with the runny nose, or her sneezing fit right before she handed you back your credit card. You contemplate heading to the bathroom to wash your hands, but instead opt for a quarter-sized drop of hand sanitizer and head to your car. But experts say that hand sanitizers don’t significantly reduce the overall amount of bacteria on your hands and shouldn’t be used in place of a wash with soap and water, if possible. additionally, it’s important to check the percentage of alcohol in the hand sanitizer before you buy it. Studies show that unless the product’s alcohol concentration is at least 60 percent, it won’t be effective at killing bacteria.

The Magic Wand

chieving gorgeous Hollywood-esque curls doesn’t require a trip to the salon anymore, and you don’t have to be “good at hair” to do it either. The hottest tool in the curling world, the “wand”, is a clamp-less, tapered curling iron that you can manipulate to adjust the size of the curls, and because there’s no clamp, it doesn’t create obnoxious kinks. To use, just take a section of hair and wrap it around the barrel, away from your face (don’t curl toward your face); hold it for 15 seconds or so, and let go. Continue to repeat until you’ve curled every section—fewer sections for wider curls. The only downside is that it’s easier to burn your fingers, so be careful or choose a wand that comes with heatresistant glove. s

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

HIGH TECH VS. HIGH TOUCH

O

ne of my retainer clients I’ve had for several years worked with more than 15 consultants who were all fired. The only reason I’m still working with this company is because I got it large national accounts that generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in net new business. This might sound like I’m tooting my horn (OK, I am) but I want to make a point. Many of the companies I work with have challenges getting new business and gaining access to hard-to-reach decision makers. When they hire marketing firms that spend thousands of dollars on very creative emails designed to help their sales teams break through, it makes me wonder. After all, no one and nothing can sell like you can. No email will sell the way a person can speak over the phone or present in person. Once a company thinks its email campaign is better at building relationships than its human sales force, it’s in big trouble. Rather than spend massive amounts of money on high-tech email strategies to build new customer relationships, I selected the top 20 companies that would be the best fit for my client’s products and services, and let my fingers do the walking on the internet. First, I searched Google for each company’s location and full contact information. Next, I searched the title of each target’s key

contact who would be the best qualified perBarry Farber son to speak with. I then “Googled” them extensively and found out everything from their favorite hobbies and interests to their complete biography with current job description, previous positions, and accomplishments. Now, any good sales person knows that no one cares how much you know until they see how much you care about them. So once you know something about them—especially something you have experience with or can relate to them about—the phone call can be made. I made call after call until I got the contact on the phone or got a call back; then I built a relationship using the knowledge from my online research. Only after that did I follow up with an informational email that related to our personal conversation… and made the sale. Everything that lasts is built on the relationship you create from that personal connection over the phone and in person. Can you build a relationship through email? Sure. But to break through you need to go beyond the technology to a more “organic” form of communication that can never be duplicated. This applies to your business and personal lives. You are unique. Let that come through in all you do and you will break through. 
