Tefilo-Israel to sort items and assemble the bags. Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel also served as a safe haven for those displaced by the hurricane. Members of Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, using funds donated by IdealJacobs, a Maplewood-headquartered corporation specializing in graphic overlays and labels, purchased the items, which were then divided up and distributed to shelters and outreach programs across the area. In addition, the students, who had been out of school for over two weeks, cooperated to decorate goody bags which were filled with journals, cards, snacks and goodies for children who suffered losses due to the storm. Donations were also made to the Interfaith Good Pantry of the Oranges for those in need of meals and cheer this Thanksgiving. “We should all be proud of the thoughtful, generous young people in our community,” TSTI Religious Director Mindy Schreff said. State-of-the-Art Dental Treatments

r. Harold Pollack of Beautiful Smiles by Dr. Pollack Dentistry in Millburn has added the use of the VELscope Vx, a stateof-the-art dental technology to his practice. It’s an important public service when high-profile people like actor Michael Douglas turn the spotlight on oral cancer. Yet, still many people remain unaware of this potentially lethal disease. Oral cancer is not rare and it is occurring more frequently and to a younger group with every passing year. At each of your hygiene maintenance visits, your dental hygienist performs an oral cancer screening. This is done by examining the tissues of the oral cavity for any lesions. However, suspicious lesions may be identified at an earlier stage, therefore with a better outcome, by an adjunctive oral exam; Dr. Pollack’s office has offered this exam, called ViziLite, for several years now. As we all know, technology changes and improves. Dr. Pollack’s office is currently performing this adjunctive oral cancer examination with VELScope. If you have any questions about VELScope or are interested in receiving this examination, please talk with your dental hygienist or contact Dr. Pollack’s office. Learn HoW to Quit

N

ew Year’s Eve is right around the corner and you know what that means—time to make those annual resolutions to be a better you. Perhaps you want to quit smoking, lose weight or curb a coffee addiction. For many of us, however, what typically begins in earnest in January often falls by the wayside just a few months later.

Kicking bad habits is tough, to be sure. and while going “cold turkey” may work for some, for the majority of people abruptly ending a long-held practice usually proves ineffective. In fact, it can even be unhealthy and lead to new bad behaviors. The best way to change patterns for the long term is to follow a gradual, orderly process. Here we provide the steps to get you on your way.

ideNtify triggers

Do you know what caused you to start your habits? Figuring out what’s behind your behavior and how it makes you feel is the key to stopping it. Maybe it was a particular life event, a reaction to someone else’s words, or an everyday occurrence that affects you on a deeper level. Whatever the trigger, acknowledge it, understand it and avoid it if necessary (and possible!).

set goals & timeliNes

after you’ve identified the causes for your habits and committed yourself to changing your behaviors, it’s important to define your goals and establish a realistic timeline for achieving them. adapt attitudes and activities so they are more aligned with your objectives, and document your progress on a daily basis. experts say that it can take between two and three months before a new behavior becomes a habit. If you relapse, which may very well occur, don’t give up. use the experience to further tailor your new lifestyle and plan ahead.

replace old Habits

Will power can only take you so far, so choose positive alternative behaviors to replace of the old ones. If you’re trying to quit smoking and yearn for a cigarette, for example, reach for sugarfree gum or crunchy vegetables instead. If you’re looking to stop biting your nails and start to feel anxious, take deep breaths and meditate for a few minutes. Such actions will help “fill the hole” left by the habits you are eliminating and also keep you focused. 28

Habits

tHem once & for aLL develop a support system

Kicking a habit is difficult, so support is critical. tell family and friends about your plans and surround yourself with positive people who want you to succeed. you also may want to join a group with others who share your goals.

stay positive & reward yourself

Concentrate on the benefits of kicking your habit, and celebrate every milestone you reach throughout the process. acknowledge your achievements by letting your supporters know how far you have come and enjoy those pats on the back. also, assign a reward to each goal that you accomplish. For instance, if you’ve lost your first five pounds, you may want to treat yourself to a movie or an inexpensive piece of jewelry. Then, at twenty pounds you can up the ante to a massage or a new pair of jeans. What’s important is to stay motivated, confident and on track. Overall, be patient with yourself. and if over time you still are struggling with a serious habit, consider seeking professional help. s

tatistics show that quitting smoking is beneficial at any age, and is best accomplished through a combination of nicotine replacement therapies (NRT), counseling and support groups and behavioral and lifestyle changes. NRTs are medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration that provide the body with controlled doses of nicotine in order to minimize withdrawal while reducing dependency. They typically require a prescription and are available in a variety of forms that include gum, patches and nasal sprays. Self-help books and audiotapes along with counseling via telephone “Quitlines” can help as well, as can modifying your behavior and lifestyle choices. Reach for oral substitutes to cigarettes, like candy and carrot sticks, and engage in hobbies that keep your hands busy, such as needlecrafts and whittling. And avoid the people and places that tempt you to light up. for more information: ehow.com, ezinearticles.com, lifeoptimizer.org, medicinenet.com

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

Chop Wood – It Warms You Twice

S

uperstorm Sandy has changed the way many of us think about our daily lives and reminds us how important electricity is to us when the power went out. We forgot how dark it can get in our house so early in the day. What do you do from 5pm to 11pm?! We wondered how people survived before homes had electricity. We were lucky to only have our power go out, but that pales in comparison to many who lost their homes and suffered tremendous setbacks in their lives. But the purpose of this column is to always try and look at the good that can come out of the bad, so here’s my family’s good. Since the purpose of this column is to look at the good that can come out of the bad, here’s my family’s good. We were amazed to find board games we never knew we had before. We played without TVs or computer games to interrupt or distract us. We laughed more and spent more quality time with family and friends; I can’t remember the last time I had my son’s attention for so long without outside (electronic) interruptions. Kids from many families went outside and started pick-up games of football, basketball, and other outdoor activities. I remember doing that! We collected wood and built fires to keep warm. My son wanted to put his strength training into action and try chopping some wood. Some people I spoke with chopped their own wood for the first time and really enjoyed it. They say, “Chop wood and it will warm you

twice.” We all could have used that warmth when the power went out. Barry Farber What did we learn from this storm’s effects? To invest in a generator or move to a warmer climate? Maybe. But there are also some real life lessons such as appreciating time with your family, helping out friends, enjoying the simple things in life, and discovering things about your kids that you wouldn’t have known without the quiet time away from monitors and devices. It took a tragedy the scope of Superstorm Sandy to bring families and friends closer together. It is gratifying to have our electricity back but I plan to bring out the board games and shut off the electronics a little more often and spend more time appreciating what we have. One of the most inspiring thoughts ever written was produced some 4500 years ago in Sanskrit; I am sharing it in translation: “Look well to this one day, for it and it alone is life. In the brief course of this one-day lie all the verities and realities of your existence— the pride of growth, the glory of action, the splendor of beauty. Yesterday is only a dream, and tomorrow is but a vision. Yet each day, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and each tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this one day, for it and it alone is life.” 

Frozen Alternatives

Low-Cal Eggnog

A

cup of this traditional wintertime beverage can have nearly 350 calories. But, by making a few adjustments, this season you can concoct an equally delicious eggnog with half the calories. This recipe on Oprah. com, created by Dr. David L. Katz, serves six and contains around 100 calories per serving. Ingredients: 6 cups skim milk 1 cup egg substitute ½ cup nonfat powdered milk 6 Tbsp. sugar 2 tsp. vanilla extract 2 tsp. rum extract Ground nutmeg or cinnamon Sugar-free whipped topping Directions: In a medium pot, over medium heat, whisk skim milk, egg substitute, powdered milk and sugar together. Cook, while stirring, for 15 to 20 minutes, until thickened. Remove pot from heat and whisk in vanilla and rum extracts. Let mixture cool, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 30 minutes. Then, refrigerate until chilled (two to three hours). Stir well and pour into cups. Sprinkle with nutmeg or cinnamon and add a spoonful of whipped topping.

I

f you’re a fan of ice cream, ice pops and other frozen treats, frozen fresh fruit can be a delicious and healthy alternative. Love banana splits? A frozen banana is a great stand-in—make sure to peel it beforehand, then store it in a plastic bag or wrapped in saran wrap. If you have a penchant for snacking, leave a bowl of grapes in the freezer for a quick bite. Citrus fruits, such as oranges and clementines, are also refreshing when frozen (lemons, too, if you don’t mind the sourness).

The Truth is in!

A

ccording to a study conducted by Anita Kelly, professor of psychology at the University of Notre Dame, telling fewer lies may improve overall mental and physical health. 110 adults participated in the 10-week study, half of whom were asked to stop telling major and minor lies, while the other half only had to report the number of lies they told per week. All of the participants took a weekly lie detector test and completed health and relationship questionnaires. The study found a stronger correlation between less lying and improved health for participants in the no-lie group. For example, the study found when participants in the no-lies group told three fewer white lies than they did in other weeks, they also experienced, on average, four fewer mentalhealth complaints and three fewer physical complaints. However, when participants in the other group told three fewer white lies, they experienced two fewer mental health complaints and one less physical complaint, on average. Other findings included when participants told fewer lies, they reported improvement in personal relationships and social interactions. 

Cooking with tony By Tim Hoey, photos by Dan Epstein

SOulFul ITAlIAn Fl AVOr for the Holidays

T

he spirit of an Italian holiday centers around three essential elements: food, family, and friends. La cucina italiana, with its harmonious style and spirit, offers superb recipes suitable for celebratory gatherings of any size. The challenge is to wisely choose dishes that match the event you’re planning. A wonderful and entirely characteristic holiday preparation is pasticcio. This delicious, traditional dish delivers soulful flavor that’s easy to prepare and share. At Christmas, many Italians look forward to savoring pasticcio’s combination of a rich ragù, lively sopressata, fresh cheese, and hearty pasta. Fortunately for home cooks in our area, pasticcio’s simple ingredients and uncomplicated cooking can be successfully duplicated. All you have to bring is love and enjoyment. We spoke with Tony Grande recently at Il Capriccio about this Italian way to celebrate the year-end holidays.

Tim: When I lived in Italy, I had the impression pasticcio was closely connected to the home and the family. Tony: That was certainly the case in Calabria, where I’m from. Pasticcio—“pasta chjina” in our local dialect—was one of the holiday dishes all of us looked forward to eating. My mother and my sister made it, and I learned how to prepare it by watching them. Tim: Your recipe calls for heating the pasticcio in a cast-iron skillet. That made me wonder if your family used a fireplace for the pasticcio. Tony: Every farmhouse had a fireplace and a wood-burning oven. However, pasticcio was not initially cooked in a fireplace, because the dish needs to cook inside a covered space. In Calabria, we had

a wood-burning oven where we made bread. It was enclosed and very hot, and that’s where my family made the pasticcio. Tim: One trademark of pasticcio is its versatility. It seems to me you can use a variety of ingredients, as long as you keep true to the dish’s spirit. Tony: As with many dishes from la cucina povera, pasticcio makes the most of what’s available. Yes, the ingredients are simple, but they yield a very satisfying result. Tim: What went into the dish was fresh, I imagine. Tony: Absolutely. We made our own mozzarella and sopressata and used them in the pasticcio. The meat came from our own animals, including goat. We got the eggs from our own chickens. The exception to this rule was the pasta; that was dry, rather than fresh. Tim: Everything seemed to have its appropriate place. Tony: One of the best things about pasticcio is that you don’t throw anything away. By respecting the ingredients and the work you do in the kitchen, you stay connected to how we survive and how we keep in harmony with the world around us. Tim: Did you serve pasticcio with other dishes? Tony: Yes. In a sense, the meals were similar to Thanksgiving, in that other dishes were also prepared, which meant there were leftovers. I think pasticcio tastes even better the second day. I like to reheat the leftover pasticcio in a cast iron skillet over an open fire and get it crispy. The taste and texture are very satisfying. Tim: Will you prepare pasticcio this holiday season? Tony: Yes, for my family. It’s a holiday tradition that we really like and share, because it’s tastes good and it’s made from the heart. It tastes like home. Tim: Very true. Thanks for sharing the pasticcio recipe with us, Tony. Tony: You’re welcome, Tim, and buon natale! s

Pasticcio di Paccheri alla Calabrese (“pasta chjina”) Serves four Procedure: Preheat the oven to 475 degrees. Heat ragù and keep warm while pasta cooks. Meanwhile, brush olive oil on the base and sides of a cast iron skillet or Dutch oven that can snugly fit 2-2½”-high ingredients. Set aside. Boil a large pot of water salted to taste. Add the pasta and cook for 16 minutes. Drain and place in a stainless steel bowl.
