First Female New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Visits Kent Place School

n Thursday January 16, Kent Place School welcomed Justice Marie Garibaldi, the first woman appointed to the NJ Supreme Court. Justice Garibaldi spoke to students, faculty and staff as part of Kent Place’s Leadership Lunch series. The Leadership Lunches give Kent Place community members the opportunity to interact with and learn from women who are leaders in their fields. During the lunch, the audience listened to Justice Garibaldi speak about her journey to become a lawyer and ultimately the first female NJ Supreme Court Justice. Justice Garibaldi described the challenges she faced as a female going into the law profession in the mid-twentieth century.

“We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to bring top-notch JAG Physical Therapy’s care to New York City,” said John Gallucci, Jr. “I am thrilled to return back to my roots to offer the highest quality care to the people of New York City.” The opening of their eighth facility at 274 Madison Avenue marks the company’s first New York Clinic. Billy Reilly has been named the Clinical Director for this facility. For more information visit www.jagpt.com or call 646-678-5995.

P

art of the Morris Museum’s mission is “to excite the mind…through exhibitions, performances and educational programs.” This component of the Morris Museum’s mandate is epitomized in two interactive events that will be sure to please the whole family.

First, the Brick Art of Nathan Sawaya, an exhibit of over 30 largescale sculptures entirely made with LEGO® bricks, which runs through March 9. Accompanying this exhibition is a special area of the Museum designated for visitors to create their own masterpieces using LEGO®. In addition, a Piece-byPiece Mosaic building workshop is offered on February 22, during which attendees will learn how to create their own LEGO® mosaic.

Second, the Chocolate Festival on February 8. This chocolate-filled day includes arts and crafts, games, chocolate tastings and singing Songs of Love with the Guinness Staff. Also sure to please is a children’s theatre performance of The Chocolate War, a musical fantasy about two inseparable friends, Springer and Sprong, “who tumble into a series of haphazard events that lead to a catastrophic quarrel over a pot of chocolate.” The performance features puppets from 12 inches to 12 feet tall, among other magical creatures. Tots and Their Teeth Encouraging Dental Hygiene in Children By Julie Jacobs

T

ooth decay is the most prevalent chronic condition affecting children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cavities are five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever in children. Furthermore, cavities in baby teeth pose a greater possibility for cavities in adult teeth. The good news is that developing good oral hygiene habits and visiting the dentist regularly early on can lead to lifelong healthy teeth. And with the American Dental Association (ADA) marking February as National Children’s Dental Health Month, there’s no better time than now to learn how easy it is to treat those pearly whites from the start!

Basics for Babies and Beyond A baby’s teeth typically start appearing around six months, and once they do, they’re already at risk for decay. “When a tooth erupts, there’s always a chance for decay to develop, so it’s important in infants to keep [teeth] clean,” says Tina Moheb, DMD, of Advanced Smiles Dental Care in Verona. Dentists suggest using a soft, clean cloth with water to wipe your baby’s gums and emerging teeth after feeding. Dr. Moheb also discourages bottle propping or sleeping with bottles, both of which can promote decay (referred to as Baby Bottle Tooth Decay). In these cases, liquids pool around the teeth, thereby giving plaque bacteria an opportunity to produce acids that attack enamel. Often the parent is not aware of this process because it occurs on the inside of the upper front teeth where it is not easily visible. Pacifiers that are dipped in sugary substances like honey or juice can contribute to decay as well. Always check for any spots or stains on your baby’s gums and emerging teeth, and if you detect any, arrange to see a dentist. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends having in place a “dental home”—where you’ve met with the dentist and registered your child as a patient— by the age of one. Dr. Moheb also advises prescription fluoride drops (or chewables for older children) in consultation with your pediatrician, as fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to decay. When your child’s teeth come in,

however, brush them gently twice a day with a child-size toothbrush and a pea-size amount of ADA-approved non-fluoride toothpaste, since very young children are apt to swallow the paste. Once your child can spit it out, switch to an ADA-approved fluoride paste. You’ll want to help with or supervise your child’s teeth brushing until ages seven or eight, and introduce flossing when she has teeth that touch.

atmosphere. Additionally, advise the dentist’s staff that it’s your child’s first visit. The overall goal, of course, is to make kids feel comfortable about going to the dentist, whom they should see every six months for checkups.

Visiting the Dentist Paving the way for fear-free dental visits is key to your child’s good dental health. The ADA suggests scheduling the first visit by age one. Normally, at this initial meeting the dentist examines the mouth for growth and development as well as cavities and signs of other problems, and also cleans the teeth. As the parent, “you always want to keep [the experience] positive from beginning to end and let your child know what to expect,” says Dr. Moheb. You also want to ease your own anxiety, as it can be picked up by your child, so find a dentist you trust and know has a proven track record in managing infants and toddlers. To help minimize worry, read a book with your child about visiting the dentist and perhaps even bring him along with you to your own dental visit beforehand, so he becomes familiar with the office

model for them and by keeping brushing and flossing entertaining and exciting. For instance, get down to your child’s level and take turns brushing one another’s teeth and give each tooth a name to make it fun. Also, opt for lots of fruits and veggies in your child’s daily diet, while discouraging foods and beverages that are high in sugar. The teeth, bones and soft tissue of the mouth require a healthy, well-balanced diet. A variety of foods from the five food groups helps minimize (and avoid) cavities and other dental problems. Most snacks that children eat cause cavities, so children should only receive healthy foods like vegetables, lowfat yogurt and cheeses, which promote strong teeth.

Handling Dental Emergencies • TOOTHACHE Gently floss to remove debris around the tooth and rinse with warm water.

• CRACKED TOOTH Rinse with warm water and then apply a cold compress to the face to reduce swelling.

• KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH Avoid touching the root and keep the tooth moist, either in some milk or, if your child won’t swallow it, by placing it between the gum and cheek in his/ her mouth. For any dental emergency, see your dentist right away.

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

LANDING A JOB AND BUILDING A CAREER

T

he majority of my work consists of connecting and meeting with key decision makers. My clients ask me to help them target specific companies that have a strong fit for their products and services and then get them in the door to meet with the right contact. Here are five keys I employ that can be applied to job seeking for college graduates.

1 2

Make a target list of the top 5-10 companies you would like to work for and where you feel you would add value.

Do your homework. There is so much information online about most companies. Search for the CEO of a specific company and read recent interviews and articles on that person before making your calls. Start at the top and work your way down to the person in charge of a specific department or responsibility. Also, seek out people who work in businesses that are similar to your targets and ask questions.

3

Network. Do what’s comfortable for you: use social media, speak with as many people as you can that have connections, join associations, and put yourself out there in a positive light. Go to www. barryfarber.com for specific articles on networking and getting appointments.

4

Differentiate yourself. What makes you unique? How can you stand out from others? My daughter got strong written testimonials from her various summer jobs that she edited and put under each job description on her resume to stand out from other applicants.

5

“No” makes me go. Most sales people give up after their first or second “no,” yet many executives agree that most sales happen after the seventh or eighth re-

jection. If you believe there is a strong fit and you can add value to their business, go back to your targets with additional information or find other ways to get introduced. This shows them your passion and tenacity, something many companies see as a valuable asset these days. Once you get the job, here are four great tips from Irv Rothman, president and CEO of Hewlett-Packard Financial Services and author of “Out-Executing the Competition.” Barry Farber: What advice would you give college graduates about getting their foot in the door with employers and then building value so they stay there and grow? Irv Rothman: Getting in the door is about patience and the ability to handle rejection, but once you’re there I have four pieces of advice. Number one is never say no. BF: What do you mean by that? IR: If somebody asks you to do something you might not like or know how to do, or you’re afraid to fail, don’t say “no” or “I don’t know how to do that.” The correct answer is, “This isn’t something I’m familiar with but I will find out how to do it and I will deliver

Vicinity Magazine SUBURBAN ESSEX / VICINITY

Barry Farber

The second piece of advice is, always work for somebody you can learn something from, at any stage of your career. Even for me today, I’m still learning something new every day and that’s a very stimulating environment.

Third, take an assignment that nobody else wants. Demonstrate your commitment and that you can really add value, even if it means you have to move some place or out of your comfort zone. The forth piece of advice that I think is very important, especially in today’s extraordinarily complex world is that you really have to learn how to operate well within a team structure. Because the world is so complicated and things move at the speed of light, no one person can do it by themselves. Especially in the corporate world there are these interdependencies, and you’ve got to learn how to recognize them, and make the rest of the people around you better by being a functional team member. If you do these four things you’ll be in pretty good shape. 
