Cyber Days Replace Snow Days
D
espite multiple snow days since the start of 2014, classroom instructions continued in earnest at Mount Saint Mary Academy in Watchung. The faculty has employed the latest technology to ensure that their students do not have to stop learning. Teachers have gone about the process of instructing remotely in many creative ways. While the Moodle homepage is always the starting point so students have a consistent location from which they can obtain their instructions, teachers utilize a multitude of platforms to ensure students receive the most extensive, subject-specific instruction. Faculty members have hosted live discussions through Moodle, and have initiated online forums and blogs where students can post responses to their teachers and to each other. Others have created podcasts and narrated animated PowerPoints. Some use Google Apps with its document-sharing ability to allow students to collaborate on projects. “The technology allows us to deliver content in various ways to support learning,” said Technology and Media Studies Department Chair Joan Mruk. “This gives students access to faculty and a rich array of resources. It also provides them with experience in asynchronous learning, an activity they are likely to encounter after high school.” “The benefit of a one-to-one environment is that students have all the tools they need to complete projects and continue to receive instruction,” said Director of Technology Carolynn Parisi, “even though they are physically away from school.” For more information about Mount Saint Mary Academy and its technological curriculum, visit www.mountsaintmary.org.

Candlelight Cabinetry Now Available at Berkeley Heights Showroom
S
ince 1988 Robinwood Kitchens’ showroom and design center in Berkeley Heights has been featuring various cabinet lines. In search of a cabinet company to complete the showroom, owner Rob Reinhardt came in contact with Candlelight Cabinetry, a custom cabinet company located in Lockport, NY. Impressed by both the quality of work and the employees, Rob and his daughter/designer, Rebecca, welcomed the company’s line into their showroom. Since introducing Candlelight into the showroom, many customers have shown a great interest in the new product. Candlelight offers a wide variety of door styles, finishes, and wood species that appeal to almost any style or taste. They also offer flush and beaded inset cabinetry for customers desiring that custom furniture look, yet at a more affordable price than other custom cabinet companies. Candlelight exhibits a homeowner-friendly approach to selling custom cabinetry, as well. For example, their brochure featuring vanity cabinets provides customers with a detailed guide for choosing bathroom cabinets, including a display of various vanity sizes and styles along with the different design options available. With the addition of Candlelight Cabinetry, Rob states “we have finally found the perfect mix of cabinet company offerings that will appeal to all customers’ budgets and styles.” Robinwood Kitchen is located at 560 Springfield Avenue in Berkeley Heights. Glass and mirror for residential and commercial applications
G
lass: It lets in sunlight, reflects images and makes spaces look bigger. It shows off fine china and lends beauty and functionality to any room. But as anyone who’s worked with GlassWorks of Summit knows, it’s the quality craftsmanship that truly makes it shine.
Concentrating on glass and mirror for both residential and commercial spaces, GlassWorks of Summit’s staff has the expertise that results in beautiful finished projects. An on-staff designer assists clients in bringing their concepts to life. For more specialized projects, GlassWorks of Summit happily works in conjunction with a client’s designer, contractor or architect for new construction and renovations, ensuring the project’s satisfactory completion. Need inspiration? Visit the spectacular Summit showroom. “What we do is everything to do with glass and mirror,” says Al Ptalis, GlassWorks’ general manager. “Much of our competition either doesn’t have a showroom or offers just a limited array of products. Our large showroom attracts a lot of retail business with walk-ins
off the street.” Word of mouth leads to many new and repeat clients, and Ptalis is proud of the five-star reviews customers give the business online. Following a common adage, “the customer is always right,” the staff helps tackle any project, whether the client is interested in having them create and install mirrors, shelving, glass tabletops or custom tub and shower enclosures. The selection is unrivaled and the highly trained professionals lead clients through the process on-site with measuring, price quotes, fabrication and installation, answering any questions along the way. “We offer high-end customization,” says Ptalis, “and while our core business is in Summit and the surrounding area, we serve all of New Jersey and New York City, too.” Frameless shower doors are a GlassWorks specialty and they carry every kind imaginable, along with hardware lines to go with them. Need your shower doors repaired? They do that, too. For exercise rooms and gyms, they’ll create small or large
sections of mirrored glass. Décor-wise, they create antique mirrors that can be beveled or surrounded by any of the showroom’s line of picture frames or help you pick out decorative glass for your specialty project. “Everything is specialty—not off the shelf—and customized to specifications,” Ptalis boasts. The business also offers commercial solutions, such as storefront glass and office partitions, among other applications. Ptalis is proud that the business never uses subcontractors. “Everyone who goes out on a job is our own employee in our own trucks.” The company provides “truly nocost, no-obligation” free on-site measurements and estimates. Thanks to its highly experienced staff and professional service, GlassWorks of Summit continues to be the go-to place for specialty glass and mirror. s

CLINICAL TRIALS:
How They Can Help, How They Work By Julie Jacobs
E
ach year, thousands of Americans volunteer for clinical trials. Not only can they personally benefit from such participation, but they can also play a critical role in helping others by contributing to the development of potentially life-enhancing or lifesaving treatments.

Vicinity Magazine â€
March 2014
What is a Clinical Trial? Clinical trials typically examine new ways to detect, diagnose or treat disease and whether they are safe and effective for patients. Such studies may look at a new drug, device or technique that can potentially prevent, delay, improve or even cure an illness or condition. In some cases, clinical trials compare interventions or evaluate other uses for existing modalities or the effects of combining therapies. The aim of all clinical trials is to discover methods that improve patients’ lives and, in fact, most medical advancements have been made through clinical trials. People who choose to take part have the opportunity to receive novel and cuttingedge treatment approaches that would otherwise not be available to them; and they do so often at no cost, while benefiting from more regular care and follow-up as well as such additional support services as counseling and nutrition. Many trial participants become involved through referrals from their physicians, but some learn about and seek out investigations on their own. Researchers conduct clinical trials according to a protocol (or research plan) that has been approved and monitored by an institutional review board made up of health professionals and lay individuals affiliated with the study site. This “map” includes the reason for and length of the study, the number of participants and eligibility criteria, when and how medications, tests and procedures will be administered, as well as the data that will be collected.
Eligibility, Informed Consent & Enrollment A critical part of the clinical trial process is determining eligibility, whereby criteria are set to ensure that only participants best suited for a particular study are enrolled, and that they will be safe throughout the duration of the trial. Criteria are usually based on factors such as gender, age and medical and treatment history, and may exclude people who are living with other pre-existing medical conditions, are on certain medications, or are in particular stages of an illness. Once eligibility is established, patients must give their informed consent. This requires that they sign legal documents indicating they have been given a detailed explanation of the study, fully understand any potential risks and benefits, and know what is expected of them as a participant. In cases where a patient is cognitively impaired, a family member or friend can help make decisions and ensure that study parameters are followed. It is important to note that enrollment in a study is kept confidential and that participants can choose to withdraw at any time.
The aim of all clinical trials is to discover methods that improve patients’ lives and, in fact, most medical advancements have been made through clinical trials.
Should You Participate? If you’re considering participating in a clinical trial, speak with your physician and make sure you have the necessary information to make an informed decision. Among the questions you should ask are: • What is being studied? • What treatments will I receive, and are there possible risks and side effects? • Will tests and procedures be involved? • What will be expected of me as a participant? • Where is the trial taking place and will I have to be hospitalized? • How long will the study take? • Who is conducting the trial and what is their experience? • How will my safety be ensured?
Study Structure & Funding Led by a principal investigator (usually a physician) who oversees a research team of health care professionals, clinical trials can be conducted in a variety of locations, including hospitals, doctor’s offices and clinics. Funding for clinical trials typically comes from pharmaceutical companies, academic medical centers, private organizations and Federal agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health. The entire process, from the laboratory to the marketplace, can take many years and is frequently marked by different phases, all regulated and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In Phase 1, a drug or treatment is administered for the first time to a small number of participants to identify appropriate doses and side effects. In Phase II, investigators evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a drug or treatment in individuals with the condition for which it has been designed. Phase III compares the study drug or treatment with the standard drug or treatment. When a trial continues to demonstrate a drug or treatment’s benefit, researchers may seek FDA approval to move into Phase IV to examine long-term safety and effectiveness, with the ultimate aim of bringing the drug or treatment to the public. Most trials that enter advanced phases are randomized, double-blind investigations. In these studies, patients are selected randomly to receive either the treatment being evaluated (as part of the treatment group) or the standard treatment or a placebo (as part of the control group). Placebos do not contain any active ingredients and thus do not have any real effect. To ensure impartial results, neither the participants nor the researchers are told who is assigned to which group. To access a listing of clinical trials worldwide, visit clinicaltrials.gov and centerwatch.com. If you’re considering participating in a clinical trial, speak with your physician and make sure you have the necessary information to make an informed decision. PRESCHOOL Preparing for the Future By Deborah Schapiro
I
f you are the parent of an infant or toddler, you may not be thinking about school yet. Research has shown, however, that preschool is vitally important for a child’s future intellectual and social development.
Some preschools today use a specific educational technique or philosophy. An example is the well-established Montessori method, named for Dr. Maria Montessori, an early-childhood education pioneer as well as the first female physician in Italy. Like other traditional Montessori schools, The Montessori Children’s Academy in Short Hills places an emphasis on having children work at their own pace, which is based upon their individual developmental timetables. Teachers model problem-solving using critical thinking versus rote memorization. A newer educational philosophy is espoused by Bilingual Buds in Summit. Bilingual Buds seeks to prepare children for the age of globalization by offering immersion programs in either Spanish or Mandarin Chinese. According to owner and founder Sharon Huang, “Our preschool is structured just like a traditional one, with circle time, snack time, songs, stories, recess, and so on. The only difference is that everything is taught in two languages, English and either Spanish or Mandarin. We call these the target languages.” Huang explains that it is much easier for young children than older children or adults to learn a second language:

Vicinity Magazine
March 2014
“Learning basic vocabulary like colors and numbers is developmentally appropriate for a two- or three-year old, so it is more natural and more fun than it would be for someone older.” Many of her students, in fact, have no background in either target language. In addition to linguistic fluency, Bilingual Buds preschoolers gain an appreciation of different cultures, which is a high priority for many parents in this age of globalization. Teachers are hired from all over the world, and holidays such as the Lunar New Year and Three Kings Day are celebrated throughout the school. Character education is taught at Trinity Academy in Roseland. According to preschool director Sister Suzanne Janis, “We teach Catholic values on a developmentally appropriate level. We enable our students to make moral, knowledgeable, intelligent decisions, and we want them to treat each other with respect and dignity. I like to sum it up by saying that we pray, we play, we learn, and we have fun here.” The values taught at Trinity may be timeless, but the schedule there has changed with the times. Like many preschool programs, it now offers extended hours.
“Preschool is very important for teaching children social and emotional skills such as sharing, empathy, and independence. Without these skills, [they] will have a much more difficult time in kindergarten.”
According to Arlene Sherman, director of Shoresh, the preschool at Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield, “Preschool is very important for teaching children social and emotional skills such as sharing, empathy, and independence (on their level, of course). Without these skills, the children will have a much more difficult time in kindergarten.” Sherman notes that as kindergarten has become more demanding, the nature of preschool has correspondingly changed “Kindergarten used to be all about milk and cookies; now kids are expected to come in almost knowing how to read. The trick is to prepare preschoolers for this while still making learning fun. A tremendous amount of learning can take place while they are singing, dancing and playing house.” These sentiments are echoed by Gina Mariani-Chimento, director of Rainbow Academy in West Caldwell, a NJ based franchise company opening soon. Mariani-Chimento states that,
“Preschool is so important for so many reasons. It helps children with socialization and prepares them for a lifetime of learning.” Rainbow Academy’s Circle of Care philosophy recognizes that the needs of working parents are equally important as the care and education of the child. The other trend Mariani-Chimento has noted is a greater use of technology: “We will have SMARTboards in our classrooms and use an electronic communication system we call ‘Tadpoles’ to communicate with parents throughout the day. Technology even plays a role in school security; we will have a biometric finger scanner that allows parents into the building, as well as a Parentview Internet Monitoring system so that parents can watch their children in real time.” Even with all the changes in preschool over the past few years, one thing has remained the same: there are many excellent ones within our area for parents to choose from.

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber
MY FAVORITE QUOTES
W
e all get caught up in the stresses of daily living, of demands on our time and attention, of obligations and commitments that occasionally make us feel overwhelmed. Sometimes all it takes to relieve some of that pressure and refocus our mind on a clear path is to think of or read a great quote that has meaning to you. Over the years I’ve collected quotes that I’ve read over and over and keep in places where I can refer to them often. They have a funny way of saying a lot in a little time and making a big impact on my thoughts and actions for the day.
sticky notes in a notebook or calendar – Anywhere you are likely to look throughout the day.
I recommend you keep quotes that make you smile posted on your refrigerator, office wall or computer; Put them on
“Never seem more learned than the people you are with. Wear your learning like a pocket watch and keep it hidden. Do not pull it out to count the hours, but give the time when you are asked.”
Barry Farber
Here are some of my favorites that I thought you would enjoy as something different for this month’s column. I hope they become part of your own collection and not only change the way you think and act, but make your days more productive and enjoyable.
“Chance favors the prepared mind” “Every strike brings me closer to the next home run.” -Babe Ruth
-Louis Pasteur
“To avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, be nothing.”
-Lord Chesterfield, British Statesman
-Elbert Hubbard
“As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live.”
“Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify, simplify!”
-Goethe
“Fate is a hunter” -Don Levine
- Henry David Thoreau
“The road is better than the inn.” “A day without sunshine, is like, you know, night.” -Steve Martin
“Very often a change of self is needed more than a change of scene.” -Arthur Christopher Benson
-Cervantes
“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!” -Audrey Hepburn
“The real and most dangerous opponents we face are fear, anger, confusion, doubt, and despair. If we overcome those enemies that attack us from within, we can attain a true victory over any attack from without.” -Morihei Ueshiba
