Madison Designer Creates Beautiful Tea Room at Blairsden

T

o be chosen as a designer for a Mansion in May room is not an easy feat. Hundreds of interior designers submit presentation boards consisting of floor plans that include furniture placement, fabric and material selection, paint colors, lighting, accessories—all very detailed. Madison designer, Nina Karamallis of British Home Emporium and BHE Studio was informed in January that her proposal had been selected. Karamallis’ room, titled “Salon de Thé” is located on the second floor of this year’s Mansion in May house, Blairsden. The Modern French style room, which overlooks the front entry allee and reflecting pool, has a soothing palette of ivory and gray accented by brilliant yellows. The custom upholstery and cabinetry in this beautiful “tea” room were made exclusively for British Home Emporium and BHE Studio by master craftsmen and upholsterers. British Home Emporium and BHE Studio are located at 89 & 91 Main Street in Madison. This year’s Mansion in May will run from May 1-31 at Blairsden in Peapack-Gladsone. The designer showhouse and gardens will be open daily from 10am-3pm.

stablished in 1939 by a group of women residents who all shared an interest in gardening, The New Providence Garden Club is celebrating their 75th anniversary this year. Over the years, the garden club has held flower shows where the proceeds were donated within the New Providence community, created table decorations for the Red Cross Society’s gala, and provided flowers for patients in the Lyons Veterans Hospital and has decorated the Governor’s mansion at Christmas time. Their yearly fundraiser will be held on the grounds of the Salt Box Museum during the May 3rd Salt Box Fair. Recently, members donated and planted over 450 daffodils in Centennial Park and also collected monies for the Red Cross for Japanese earthquake victims. The clubs mission is to promote an interest in gardening, landscape design, flower arranging and encourage the study of horticulture. New members are always welcomed. May 2014

T

his year’s Mansion in May Designer Showhouse and Gardens will be held at Blairsden, a magnificent Louis XIV chateau-style mansion in Peapack-Gladstone, New Jersey.

Mansion in May, the signature fundraiser for The Women’s Association of Morristown Medical Center, has generated over $8 million since the first Mansion in May in 1974 and attracts upwards of 25,000 visitors during the month. All proceeds from this year’s event will benefit their “One Big House, Two Great Causes for Kids,” campaign of an expanded Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and new Autism Center at Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Medical Center. Blairsden, country home of New York City financier C. Ledyard Blair and his family, was built between 1898 and 1903 and is truly an American treasure. The mansion represents the finest Beaux-arts architecture in the country and was one of the premier works of the New York architecture firm of Carrere and Hastings. The firm also designed the New York Public Library, and the original United States Senate and House office buildings in Washington, DC.

Carrere and Hastings, along with noted landscape architect James Leal Greenleaf, designed Blairsden’s gardens and grounds. In addition to Blairsden, Greenleaf also collaborated on the landscape designs of the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, DC. Blairsden is a magnificent 62,000 square foot four-story mansion that features a mile-long private drive, a French limestone entrance, marble stairways, 14-foot ceilings, more than two dozen ornate fireplaces mantels, and tooled leather walls in the billiards room. The mansion, which features a breathtaking view of the rolling Somerset Hills of Peapack-Gladstone, also has a 300-foot reflecting pool, which is lined by the busts of the first twelve Roman Caesars. For this year’s event, over 150 design proposals were submitted by some of the best designers in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, many of whom were drawn by the history and splendor of Blairsden. From this avalanche of proposals, the Mansion in May Design Team chose 57 interior designers to share their design inspirations throughout the house, while 6 landscape designers will translate their concepts into reality on the mansion’s grounds. Visitors are invited to spend the day enjoying the splendor of Blairsden. In addition to exploring the mansion’s unique history and enjoying scenic views while strolling the gardens, they can also vote for their favorite designer space, shop the Boutiques at Blairsden, and dine at the Conservatory Café. Self-guided tours at Blairsden, available from 10am to 3pm every day in May, are generally 1.5 hours to 2 hours long. The last ticket is sold at 3pm. Tickets are $40 in advance, and $50 during the month of May. There are also two-hour private and guided tours for $100, which include a $20 lunch voucher for the Cafe. Private and guided tours are for groups of 12, or for individuals who want to join a guided tour. Reservations for private and guided tour reservations must be made online, and the ticket must be used on the scheduled day. For tickets and additional information about Mansion in May at Blairsden, visit: www.MansioninMay.org. May 2014

Updating the Function & Aesthetics of Your Landscape

I

f in your imagination all the outdoor elements of your home work together in harmony, then William Scerbo is just the person to consult to make it happen. Scerbo, an award-winning landscape architect, has mastered the art of melding the modern needs of today’s homeowners with the period details of historic and older homes. His past projects are remarkably varied as to size and budget, but they all have one thread in common: completed projects are sensitive to a client’s architectural style, complementing and working in perfect harmony with not only the client’s surroundings, but also the surrounding neighborhood and community. Patios, swimming pools, children’s play areas, walks and driveways are a few of the elements that benefit from Mr. Scerbo’s thorough planning process, and his solutions embrace a customer’s lifestyle needs. His years-long expertise in horticulture results in a visual garden experience that is stunning. Scerbo brings his artistic talents to all his work, in which plans are drawn and rendered by hand, a process he believes is superior to computer drawings, and one that results in a greater understanding of his clients’ goals and a lends itself to better solutions to problems. Working with historic architecture is a special forte of Scerbo’s. “My clients are often surprised to see how gracefully changes in landscape, both the green improvement and the hardscape, can work with an older home. Even conservative budgets can be sensibly applied to these types of homes and settings,” he explains. And although he has created magnificent master plans for properties that are several acres in size, his talents have been equally prominent in the design of magical small garden landscapes common to communities of Essex County.

“Liveable and Gorgeous… the Hallmarks of every landscape designed and built by devoted people at Landscape & Lifestyle Co.”

Mr. Scerbo welcomes the opportunity to spend time with potential clients to discuss their needs in thorough detail. A telephone consultation leads to a walk around the property, during which he makes gentle suggestions and gets a better feel for the homeowner’s wants and needs. Throughout the project and until completion, he and the client continue to communicate closely.

Seeing the work built by Scerbo’s team of expert contracts is also a great pleasure, his clients tell him. “I choose from a pool of contractors with whom I’ve been working throughout my thirty years in the business,” explains Scerbo. “It’s a cooperative, experienced network of folks who turn out top-quality workmanship.” Mr. Scerbo’s background has made him a sought-after design expert. A professor of Landscape Architecture at Rutgers for eight years, he was also creator and host of the popular radio program, Our Towns, Our Streets, Our Gardens, and the recipient of many American Society of Landscape Architects awards and commendations. One of New Jersey’s most committed landscape design professionals and one of the few who practice design as a process embracing both old and new, he creates home environments that will give pleasure to today’s families and to the generations that follow.

HOME & GARDEN Bringing Indoor Comfort Outside

Make Your Outdoor Space an Extension of Your Home

T

he arrival of summer, along with its sunny skies and beautiful weather, beckons homeowners to create a space to entertain guests and enjoy the great outdoors. Design an outdoor living room that merges style and function, and incorporates elements of indoor comfort. Whether entertaining for two or 10, the warmer weather provides an abundance of opportunities to lounge in peaceful, open-air surroundings. New offerings in decor and design breathe indoor inspiration into your outdoor spaces, creating a beautiful extension of your home for all to enjoy.

BE BRIGHT, ALL NIGHT The sun may still be shining when the guests arrive, but you’ll need something to light up the night and keep the party going all evening long. Create a delightful, welcoming atmosphere with a variety of outdoor lighting options, such as string lights, paper lanterns or floating LED candles placed around the patio.

Here are some stylish secrets to make your outdoor space an elegant living space worth sharing.

ARRANGE AWAY Treat your outdoor area as you would your living room. If space is limited, use sectionals to create seating in whatever arrangement fits best. If there is more room, add an investment piece. Finish the look by layering your favorite accessories, such as handcrafted trays, detailed lanterns and a colorful floral arrangement to create a cheerful centerpiece that makes your guests feel welcome.

TIE IT ALL TOGETHER To let you in on a little secret—outdoor rugs tie everything together and really bring a space to life. Simply layer a rug with a beautiful seating collection, colorful cushions and pillows, and you’ve got an outdoor area that makes everyone comfortable and happy.

EMBRACE THE BOLD Some might be afraid to create a statement outside because—it’s outside. But an outdoor living space lends itself to adventures with color and pattern, providing the opportunity to be bold and to go beyond your comfort zone. When shopping for the outdoors, remember—anything goes.

MAKE IT UNIQUELY YOURS Mix and match with color and patterns, and personalize your space with accents such as outdoor artwork, planters, umbrellas and more. A smart combination of accessories really transforms an outdoor space from simple to fabulous.

SERVE IN STYLE Al fresco entertaining always focuses on food, drinks and friends. A self-service food station or bar enhances the casual tone, freeing guests to grab refreshments whenever they please. This also allows you, the host, to focus on the fun at hand. So let the warmth of the season bring many memorable moments to your life and stylish elements into your outdoor spaces. For more great decorating ideas, visit www.pier1.com.

OUTDOOR-FRIENDLY MATERIALS Have you ever wondered how some products are suitable for the outdoors while others can only be kept inside? Various processes and materials give outdoor furniture and decor durability and weather-resistant appeal. -Family Features

Health, Beauty & Fitness Enhancing Health with Essential Oils By Julie Jacobs

T

oday more people are turning to aromatherapists to help them fight infection and improve well-being. According to medical literature, aromatic compounds (or essential oils) extracted from flowers, plants and trees can influence physiological and psychological functions. Aromatherapy has been used to relieve pain, reduce stress, decrease blood pressure, promote sleep, boost mood and more. Essential oils can enter the body through the nose or skin. When smelled, they bind with receptors in the nose that send messages to the brain, affecting the central nervous system. Oils absorbed through the skin must reach the bloodstream and take longer to produce an effect. In some cases, essential oils may be so highly concentrated that they can cause the skin to react adversely—which is why experts recommend diluting them with water or lotion. You also can benefit from products that incorporate essential oils, such as creams, fragrances, soaps, candles and diffusers.

Other safety measures include storing essential oils in dark glass bottles in a cool and dry place, using only prescribed doses, and heeding all warnings on the labels (especially if you take medications regularly). Also, keep essential oils away from your eyes and mouth, and do not ingest them. Finally, essential oils can be dangerous for young children, who may mistake them for juice and whose skin can be ultra-sensitive—stow essential oils away where children can’t reach them.

Oils and What They Do There are many essential oils offering various therapeutic properties, and sometimes they are combined to produce what are referred to as “mood blends.” Among the most common essential oils are: • Bergamot—lessens stress, depression and anxiety, and eases skin infections such as eczema and psoriasis • Cedarwood—aids with respiratory issues and urinary tract infections • Chamomile—treats inflammation and calms and soothes

Using Oils Safely It’s important to remember that essential oils are really powerful substances and that slight variations are fine, as long as the true essence of the plant has been unaltered. And since some products on the market are not authentic and the practice of aromatherapy is not regulated and currently does not require licensing, always consult with your doctor before trying aromatherapy—particularly if you are pregnant or have a chronic condition such as allergies.

• Lemon—enhances immunity and mood. • Marjoram—fights fatigue and helps with respiratory and circulatory concerns • Peppermint—increases concentration and alleviates stomachache.

• Citrus—decreases anxiety

• Rose—protects the heart and helps with digestive and respiratory issues

• Eucalyptus—increases alertness and soothes muscle pain.

• Rosemary—stimulates memory and focus, and reduces headache.

• Jasmine—improves libido

• Sandalwood—decreases tension and hydrates skin.

• Lavender—minimizes scarring, relieves stress and promotes sleep

• Tea Tree—heals cuts and burns, and treats dandruff and Athlete’s foot

Children & Diabetes

Type 2 Becomes Epidemic Among the Young By Julie Jacobs

T

ype 2 diabetes, once associated only with adults and old age, has been rearing its ugly head among the younger set. While children with diabetes typically are diagnosed with type 1, the prevalence of type 2 in kids has increased considerably in the past decade or so. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control reveal that one in three children born in 2000 is at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The reason? Perhaps the greatest link lies with obesity, a condition that has become widespread among children, thanks in large part to a more sedentary lifestyle fueled by computers and video games, as well as a frequent fast-food diet. The extra weight can interfere with the body’s production of insulin, a hormone necessary to metabolize food into glucose (blood sugar) to feed cells. With overweight kids, whose bodies are unable to use insulin effectively—clinically referred to as insulin resistance—the likelihood rises that they will have type 2 diabetes.

In addition to obesity, family history poses significant risk for developing type 2 diabetes. High blood pressure and elevated cholesterol and triglycerides also can trigger it. The disease is more common in girls than boys and presents more often in the African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian and American Indian communities. wwAlthough symptoms develop slowly (and may even not appear at all), signs such as dry mouth, fatigue, increased hunger or thirst, frequent urination, itchy skin and blurred vision should be evaluated by a physician. In children, onset usually occurs during puberty, when blood sugar levels can fall prey to surging hormones and adolescent stress. If left untreated, type 2 diabetes in children can bring about long-term problems in young adulthood that range from blindness and neuropathy (nerve damage) to renal failure and heart disease. Numbness, particularly in the legs and feet, can result in slow-healing wounds and infections, and in some cases amputation. Nearly all children with type 2 diabetes exhibit acanthosis nigricans, a skin condition marked by velvet-like patches found typically around the neck, armpits and other areas where the skin folds. Young girls with the disease are prone to hormonal upsets that can generate facial hair and ovarian cysts.

Diabetes Control For growing children, living for years with type 2 diabetes can make an already complicated illness even more complicated, as well as challenging. Fortunately, early intervention through lifestyle changes, self-management and regular visits to pediatricians, endocrinologists, ophthalmologists and podiatrists can play a huge role in controlling the disease. Self-management involves monitoring for normal blood sugar levels and maintaining them by complying with medication regimens, eating healthy, paying attention to portion control and exercising daily. Good nutrition should encompass three low-fat, high-fiber meals each day, with diet soft drinks, water and skim or 1% milk replacing high-caloric sodas. Carbs affect blood sugar the most, so aim for healthy ones like fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole-grain breads, cereals and pastas. A ramped-up fitness routine should include 30 minutes of exercise a day and limited television and computer time. Regular workouts, which can help reduce body fat, improve blood sugar control and make insulin more efficient, are not only among the most effective measures for keeping type 2 diabetes in check, but also preventing it from developing. Losing just a few pounds, in fact, can enhance the body’s sensitivity to insulin. As little as a five percent decrease in weight can have a positive impact on blood sugar, and for patients with impaired glucose tolerance, a seven percent reduction in weight can lower the risk of occurrence by 30 percent. The American Diabetes Association helps children with type 2 diabetes and their families with self-management through one-on-one educational counseling, psychosocial counseling, meal planning, blood glucose monitoring, insulin pump therapy and family support. DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

Above the Strings And then, when you think you have learned everything… “It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.”

Barry Farber

—John Wooden (1910–2010) UCLA Basketball Coach

T

he most successful people in every field know they can never fully master their craft; there is always something new to learn. There is never a time when you can say, “Ah, now I know everything about this subject.” One man who is a perfect example of continuous learning was former master violin maker Richard Menzel. He spent more than 30 years as an engineer at the Lockheed Corporation. yet he always made time for his love of music. When he left Lockheed to open his shop, he continued his quest for knowledge. Menzel used the standard tools of his trade, but often invented new tools to study areas of violin engineering no one else had explored. He created an instrument to measure the angle of your arm when you’re moving the bow from string to string so that you can gauge and improve your form. He also invented a machine to study the properties of horsehair used in making bows, asking, “How much pressure does it take to break this hair? How much does it stretch? How much does it expand

over time? Nobody knows, but I want to find out.” I remember once being challenged to see if I could learn to play the violin in 30 days. The violin Is known for being one of the most unforgiving instruments to learn. After seeking advice from Menzel, he advised me to take the violin home and for 15 minutes each day, take the bow and put it a quarter inch above the string going backand-forth from one end of the horsehair to the other very slowly, ensuring to keep the space between the bow hair and the string a quarter inch in distance apart at all time. By doing this exercise, I realized I was

training my hand, arm and muscles to move in a specific way. Then when I played the violin string with the bow, the tone and quality was much superior than before. Performing this tedious exercise helped me enjoy playing the violin a lot more. Menzel taught me a valuable lesson about the fundamentals of learning and how important they are to creating a strong foundation in music, sports, business or any endeavor. He taught me that successful people do the things that unsuccessful people don’t like to do.

“One who is careless in small things is careless in all and will never accomplish great things.”

—Jirokichi Yamada (1863-1931) Master Swordsman
