2016 Spring Benefit Was Tremendous Success Winston Preparatory School, the innovative day school for students in the 4th through 12th grade with learning differences such as dyslexia, nonverbal learning disabilities, and executive functioning difficulties, held its Annual Spring Benefit on March 12, 2016 where all four campuses— New York City, Norwalk CT, Whippany, NJ, and Transitions—came together to Celebrate Winston Prep ~ Where Understanding Begins. It was school’s largest event ever with over 525 people gathered at Cipriani 42nd Street NYC in support of Winston. Executive Director, Scott Bezsylko, welcomed the enthusiastic crowd and spoke about the accomplishments the Winston community has made together and the school’s continued efforts, through a multi-year Science of Learning Campaign, to shape the way children learn, and ultimately, to broaden society’s awareness of what it really means to develop specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of each student every day. Kenzo Repola, a 2016 Winston graduate, moved the audience as he reflected on his time at Winston, the impact the school had on his educational journey and his bright future ahead. The Suzanne Lorie Band entertained guests throughout the night and got everyone on the dance floor after the program concluded. Winston’s talented student musicians, the NY Session and The CT Strings performed to rousing cheers.

ave a faith in the future and a belief in action? Now is the time to join the National Council of Jewish Women, Essex County Section, a nonsectarian nonprofit organization dedicated to these principles as well as to making an impact on the local community. Founded in the late 1890s, the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a national grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, but welcoming of all faiths, the NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children and families by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms. Divided into groups called “sections,” NCJW’s Essex County Section (NCJW/Essex) is over 100 years old and the largest in the country, with over 3,200 members. Volunteers currently are being sought for NCJW/Essex’s signature program, the Back 2 School Store, now in its eighth year. The event provides underserved children with new clothing, sneakers, a backpack,

school supplies and personal care items. Children get to “shop” from the brand new merchandise purchased or donated by NCJW/Essex and sponsors. Parents also can pick up vital health and social service information. The event will be held in a synagogue in West Orange on July 31. “We rely on more than 300 volunteers to mount the Back 2 School Store each year,” explains NCJW/Essex President Deborah Legow Schatz. “It’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in more than twenty years with NCJW. We’d love to have more women and men from our surrounding communities participate.” NCJW/Essex also runs the Linda & Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex Center for Women (CFW). CFW sponsors a career services center, offering multi-faceted assistance such as career counseling, interview training, food and personal care items for those clients in need, and a ‘Career Closet’ of business attire . “We provide a wide range of nonsectarian, free and low-cost services designed to boost self-esteem and empower clients when they need it

most,” says Advertising and Public Relations Coordinator, Michele Freidus. NCJW/Essex also hosts a variety of interesting speakers and programs in the Vicinity area. For example, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, author of Single Jewish Male Seeking Soulmate, will speak at a Dessert and Dialogue event on May 3. Former Governor James McGreevy, current director of the Jersey City Employment and Training Program, is slated to speak about “A Fresh Start: Reinvention after Incarceration” during a Lunch and Learn on May 17. The ongoing schedule of educational activities and training for women include computer classes and workshops on such subjects as divorce and downsizing.

Stop in the Name of Slouch The Importance of Good Posture By Katrina Musto

F

or many who work in the nine-to-five world, sitting is the norm and slouching over a mouse pad is typical. Posture—or how a body is positioned when sitting, standing and lying down—may become compromised by such bad habits. Take steps to correct poor posture before discomfort and injury results. Good posture promotes health by keeping bones and joints in alignment, maintaining a strong spine and preventing fatigue and strain.

Three Tips for Getting Perfect Posture:

1

2

If working at a desk, sit up straight with your shoulders dropped, keep your eyes level with the top of the monitor and elbows and wrists straight at 90-degree angles.

Take a Yoga or Pilates class. Strengthening core muscles will work wonders and ultimately fix posture problems.

3

Lift weights. Simple weightlifting exercises can improve posture while also helping tone the rest of the body.

etting all the nutrients you need each day to function or even thrive can be a challenge. After all, there are only so many meals in a day.

Healthy Lifestyle

Here are some creative ways to pack the necessary nutrients into your day, without going over your tight calorie budget.

Match your nutrient-filled diet with a healthy lifestyle. Get plenty of sleep each night, at least eight hours, and move more during the day, with at least 20 minutes of activity.

Make Each Bite Count It’s tempting to sneak in “empty calories,” with foods and beverages that have little in the way of nutritional value. Don’t give in to sugary treats or easy fixes. You will ultimately feel more satisfied by foods that work to fuel your body.

Be sure to stay hydrated all day long with glasses of clean, clear liquids. Water aids digestion and helps you skip the sugary soft drinks, which are high in calories but offer no nutritional value. Opt for water and green tea instead.

Plan meals ahead to ensure they each include a healthful balance of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, amino acids and minerals. Eating colorfully with each meal can help, because fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds of different colors can provide a rich mix of these valuable nutrients and antioxidants. Also, don’t let unhealthy snacking be your downfall. Snacking doesn’t have to carry the connotation of mindless consumption in front of a television. Carefully planned bites between meals can be just what the nutritionist ordered. For instance, consider a cup of high fiber cereal mixed with a few nuts or pumpkin seeds to tide you over between meals, A piece of whole wheat toast with a little nut butter also can do the trick, as can a piece of fruit with a slice of cheese. Get to know the healthful options on restaurant menus and take the time to chew and enjoy your food.

Easy Replacements Some of the most essential nutritional components include protein, good

Diamond MINDS

Those Who Desire Nothing—

Possess Everything

W

hat does that saying really mean? It’s been a saying that I remember from my past experience in the martial arts and the research of martial arts masters. Does that mean I don’t desire nice things? That I don’t want success? That I don’t reach out and grab opportunities or set goals? Not really. I still do. But when so many of the martial arts masters from the past talked about this “effortless effort” and “detachment” it intrigued me.

“Take no thought of who is right or wrong, or who is better than. Be not for or against.” —Bruce Lee

There is a fine line between the study of Zen and what we call achievement and success. To achieve something great you need to have a hunger, desire, tenacity and go after it with all your might. But that’s contradictory to what Zen emphasizes. The dictionary definition of Zen: An approach to an activity, skill, or subject that emphasizes simplicity and intuition rather than conventional thinking or fixation on goals. Does achievement without effort mean you don’t work hard? Not at all. It’s actually a detachment from the desire of caring too much about winning or caring too much about not winning. —And that’s where it gets difficult to put your arms around. It is pure action with body and mind as one. Too much caring and desire for winning will get in the way of the performance.

There is a saying I have talked about in past columns, called Mushin, which means “no mind” or action without thinking. Yogi Berra said it best, “How can anybody hit and think at the same time”. Actions are pure and come naturally without thought. But the real key is detachment. Not to think and just do. Your body and mind are together and there are no thoughts disrupting the action. Because when you do not care you can be at ease. One of my favorite books on this subject is “Zen in the Martial Arts,” by Joe Hyams. He tells a story about when he was training with his sensei who told him to hit a baseball mitt that was kept perfectly still. As soon as Joe got ready to punch he tensed up and his sensei was aware of his intention and he moved the mitt before Joe could strike it. “Relax,” he said. “Stop straining. The less effort, the faster and more powerful you will be.” As soon as Joe relaxed his body and mind, he hit the target. His sensei told him, “You stopped caring whether you hit the mitt or not. It is the caring or desire which stands in the way of effortless effort. You must stop caring about doing it and just do it— effortlessly and naturally as snow falls from the tree or water bubbles up from the spring.”

“When you learn not to want things so badly, life comes to you.”
