“Buy One, Bring One” to Somerset County’s Food Drive
T
he Somerset County “Buy One, Bring One” (BOBO) collection program was created in 2010, and has collected over 20,000 pounds of donations since the program started. This kind of sustained support is what the Food Bank Network is so urgently in need of. Donated food and personal care items will be distributed to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County. The targeted collection schedule is the third Friday of every month, however bins are available every day, so donations may be dropped off at any time during regular business hours at all locations. Most-needed items include shelf-stable milk, canned meat and fruit, peanut butter, jelly, low-salt soups, cereal, rice and beans. Canned or boxed food items are accepted.
F
10 Years of Fabulous Fabric
airfield’s Fabric Factory Outlet marks its 10th anniversary in business this month. Founded in 2003, the business offers custom window treatments, bedding, cornices, and more, as well as discounts on fabric purchased directly from high-end labels. The business, which has been growing steadily for the past decade, now offers an on-site upholstery workroom staffed with five skilled employees. Owner Daniel Silva also employs a staff of three highly trained design/sales employees, all with rich backgrounds and experience in interior design or textile design. “My staff are very competent professionals,” states Silva. “We are not one of the run-of-themill fabric stores where someone just cuts the fabric for you. We are all knowledgeable and know how to put fabrics, patterns and colors together.” The business is located at 390 Fairfield Road in Fairfield, and can be reached by calling 973-439-0333 or by visiting www. fabricfactoryoutlet.net.

Own a Piece of the Great Swamp with a “Tree Cookie!”
G
reat Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township now offers a special treat for you to take home: a “tree cookie,” a round slice of a tree trunk carved and personalized. Sorry, it’s not edible! Using trees downed by Hurricane Sandy, The Great Swamp OEC is getting ready to spread its message of conservation and human/wildlife interdependence in an entirely new way. Available in four different sizes, the tree cookie is professionally carved and personalized with anything you choose, whether it’s a person’s name, anniversary, birthday, special event, team or scout troop. The completed “tree cookies” can be displayed in a mosaic on the outside walls of the Great Swamp for everyone to enjoy, or can be taken home as a souvenir. The cost ranges from $25 for a tree cookie with a six-inch diameter to $200 for a twelve-inch diameter. Your purchase is a donation to the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center’s educational exhibits and programs. For more information, visit www.morrisparks.net or call 973-635-6629.

enhAnce your outdoor experience with modern design And Amenities
N
ow that the weather is reliably warm and sunny, spending time outdoors is especially appealing. Garden Staters are lucky to be near both beaches and cities, but sometimes, to quote a famous movie, there’s no place like home. For the times that you just want to enjoy your backyard, we consulted several backyard experts on ways to enhance the experience. According to Ken Reilly, a manager at Pelican Shops in Morris Plains, “People will be spending more time at home this summer because the shore was devastated by Hurricane Sandy, so they are really doing up their backyards.” Reilly has seen increased demand for outdoor refrigerators, sinks, wet bars and grills: “Our customers are essentially building outdoor kitchens for themselves.”
Another element of modern bAckyArd design is contemporary tiling. For outdoor fountains… use porcelAin or glAss tiles.
sound quality outdoors.” Another element of modern backyard design is contemporary tiling. According to Frank Matarazzo, owner of Mediterranean Tile in Fairfield and Bernardsville, there are now tiles in a number of styles and materials which are suitable for outdoor kitchens. For instance, he recommends porcelain for a contemporary look and travertine (a form of limestone) for a rustic look. For outdoor fountains, Matarazzo generally uses porcelain or glass tiles; he even carries tiles handpainted with patterns and motifs of the American Southwest and Southern Europe. Creating a backyard kitchen or music/media center can be a relatively simple matter. Adding a pool house or cabana is another proposition, but one that may appeal to those with the time, space and funds. According to Don Distasio Jr., Sales and Design Manager at Showcase Kitchen & Bath in Bloomfield, “For this customer, we are almost turning the backyard into a resort.” For the initial consultation, Distasio and his team will typically meet with the client at the client’s home for anywhere from 45-90 minutes to discuss what the client wants: Washer/dryer? Kitchenette? Changing rooms? About a week later, the Showroom staff will show the client a preliminary proposal. Assuming the client wants to go ahead with the project, a retainer fee will be charged and a final proposal will be submitted to the client. Distasio cautions that this process alone can take up to four weeks; architectural plans and permitting take several more. The actual construction can take up to three months; it is clearly too late for anyone hoping to build a pool house this summer. But for homeowners considering such a big step, Showcase simplifies the process by doing all the work itself. Notes Distasio: “We are a true design/ build firm, from planning and design to product selection and final construction, our design team does it all under one roof.” s
Regarding patio furniture, Reilly notes that sectional seating and cantilevered umbrellas are both “really hot” this year. Probably as a result of Hurricane Sandy-inflicted damage, he also has seen a move away from glass- to aluminum-topped, or even stone, patio tables. In addition to the trend toward backyard-as-kitchen, there is also a major move toward backyard-as-media center. According to Gary Kendelski, Home Audio Systems General Manager at Samm Sound in West Caldwell, “There was only one manufacturer of outdoor televisions a few years ago; now there are several. They need to be wired underground back to a safe, waterproof environment, since cable boxes are not waterproof, but the televisions themselves and the remote controls are completely waterproof.” Even more impressive, according to Kendelski, is the improvement in outdoor audio equipment. For those who want their music to have a deep, rumbling “big sound,” Samm Sound now sells underground subwoofers (loudspeakers which augment bass frequencies). A tiny speaker is connected to the subwoofer, eliminating the need for large outdoor speakers. At the same time, however, Kendelski is seeing an increase in the variety of options available for above-ground speakers that resemble landscape lighting. Whichever type of audio equipment a customer chooses, he courtesy of mediterranean tile enthuses, “It is now possible to get indoor

Discover Summit Arts Festival CeleBrating Summit’S extraordinary Cultural artS SCene 22
VICINITY MAGAZINE
June 2013
F
or one glorious week this summer, June 23 through June 29, the city of Summit will hold a fun-filled, fabulous festival of more than 40 cultural offerings. The goal of the festival is to highlight Summit’s downtown area as a premiere cultural destination. Planned by a collaboration of local volunteers, businesses and arts organizations, the festival will present films, live theater, local artists, creative art therapies and healing arts, lectures, fine art exhibits, choral groups, the Summit Symphony Orchestra, celebrity chefs as well as a potpourri of educational and edifying events.
“We want our first festival to attract the public and to position Summit as a mecca of cultural diversity,” says Mayor Ellen Dickson, whose planning acumen and enthusiasm for the week-long program of festivities reflect her love for the town. “I came to Summit 20 years ago from Chicago, and I fell in love with the community as soon as my husband and I walked downtown for the first time.” The city of Summit has grown in recent years to become an economically and culturally diverse community. Boasting a population of over 21,000 residents, more than 35 languages are spoken in this eclectic oasis located in Union County. Janet Whitman and Lyle Brehm, the two longtime residents and arts enthusiasts who came up with the idea for a festival, approached Mayor Dickson in October of 2012. Like wildfire, the word spread, committees formed and a plan of action began. Jean Criss, Executive Producer and Media Director for “Discover Summit Arts Festival,” came on board right from the start. Her brainchild, the featuring of celebrity chefs, is an enticing initiative because it underscores the excellent reputation Summit has for fine cuisine and distinctive restaurants. The three prominent chefs that will be featured are: James Laird, executive chef at Le Serenade; David Drake, executive chef and general manager at Alice’s Restaurant and Jesse Jones, chef and private caterer. Performing arts will figure prominently in the entertainment scheduling. The Summit-based Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre, Summit Playhouse and Stony Hill players will combine their talents to present a collage of outstanding performances. Audiences familiar with the repertoire of each group will recognize many of the performers because the groups often utilize local talent in the exciting seasons of plays, musicals and youth programs. For children from kindergarten through fifth grade, award-winning folksingers and storytellers will be featured at the Summit Free Public Library. HealtH & Beauty By Julie Jacobs
A LOOk At ChiLdren’s eye heALth For children, good vision involves so much more than simply seeing well. Vision disorders are in fact the numberone handicapping condition among them. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), upward of 94% of children with reading difficulties have reduced visual skills, and approximately 20% of schoolaged children may be affected to some degree by learning-related vision disorders.
V
isual problems affecting eye focus, alignment and movement, for instance, often go undetected and can make learning hard and lead to other eye problems. Furthermore, children struggling with their vision often are misdiagnosed as having aDD/aDHD and are academically misplaced in the classroom. The american academy of Ophthalmology recommends that school-age children have a complete medical eye exam by their fourth birthday, and routine eye exams approximately every two years thereafter. In addition to the pediatrician’s office, eye exams can be obtained through community centers, school programs, health fairs, and volunteer organizations accessible through the website preventblindness.org. Parents can play a key role in uncovering eye disorders by keeping a watch on their kids for such signs as wandering or crossed eyes, squinting and disinterest in reading. The good news is that many sight deficiencies can be corrected through vision therapy—individualized, nonsurgical treatment that is typically administered by an optometrist. Short-term and goal-oriented, vision therapy addresses a child’s entire visual-motor system, which includes the brain’s ability to process what the eyes see. It incorporates the use of such tools as prisms, filters, lenses and com-

A VISION SOURCE PRACTICE
Protect Their Eyes When Outdoors Just as it’s important for adults to wear sunglasses, so too is it for kids, especially in the summer months when there are more hours of sunlight. even when it’s cloudy or not very sunny, there are still uV rays that can damage the eyes. excessive and/or direct exposure to the sun can lead to an array of conditions that include cataracts, photokeratitis (painful sunburn of the cornea, commonly known as snow blindness) and eye cancer. Sunglasses not only protect the eyes from the sun, but from wind and debris as well. They also enable the eyes to better and more quickly adapt to changes in light between the outdoors and indoors. When shopping for eyeglasses, look for a label indicating that they offer uV blockage. and purchase them from a department or drugstore, as sunglasses bought from street vendors may not offer enough or any protection from harmful uV rays. s For more inFormation: allaboutvision.com, aoa.org, carefair.com, ezinearticles.com, healthcarecolleges.net, livestrong.com, mayoclinic.org, nia.nih.gov, webmd.com

HAve YOU HeARD By Jessica Schiffenhaus
Proper Breathing Technique
P
lace one hand on your chest and one hand on your stomach, and take a big breath. Which hand moved more? If you have a tendency to suck in your stomach, then most likely it was the hand on your chest. While sucking in your stomach may make you feel thinner, it leads to an inefficient way of breathing—through the chest. If you’re breathing properly you should feel your stomach inflate as you inhale, and deflate as you exhale— this is a sign your diaphragm is fully contracting to let your lungs fill with air. Breathing through the chest limits oxygen intake, which can slow metabolism, deprive cells of oxygen and cause tension in the neck and shoulders.

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber
WORDS OF WISDOM FROM THE WORLD’S GREATEST CATCHER
I
n a recent radio interview I had the opportunity to speak with Hall of Fame catcher, Johnny Bench. He was the World Series MVP (1976), a 14-time All-Star, and winner of 10 Gold Gloves. He was also named the greatest catcher ever by the Sporting News in late 1998, in which Johnny was named the 16th greatest baseball player of all time. During our interview he inspired me with many ideas that I’m sharing with you here. I asked Johnny about his thoughts on learning, mentors, and focusing under pressure and here is what he had to say.
“A slump is like a soft bed, easy to get into and hard to get out of… persevere, persevere.”
– Johnny Bench
On Constant Learning…
I have a book called, “Catch Every Ball” about how to handle life’s pitches. Part of the book covers the vowels of success and “U” stands for “Use people’s knowledge.” Use the opportunity you have every day to learn from someone smarter or more experienced than yourself. When I speak at sales events and salespeople win their 15th trophy and plaque, I ask the younger reps if they ever talk to those winning salespeople. I tell them, “They may give you the way and a short cut to be more successful, so why not use the talents and experience of those people and advance what you’re doing?”
On Wise Advisors…
When you talk about playing at a higher level you have to ask yourself who are your friends, who are your mentors, who guides you? Every successful business has added marketing people and vice presidents who are
Barry Farber
smarter than the president himself. Great lawyers or accountants surround themselves with smart people. They understand that’s the way it’s going to work better.
On Performing Under Pressure…
How prepared are you? How have you prepared? Have you matched up against the competition? I have a thing I call “inner conceit” and it’s being better than the situation. Maybe the pitcher could have gotten me out but I didn’t believe he could. I didn’t think there was a runner that could steal a base. It is so important that you believe in what you can do and that you have trained for that level of performance. That’s why we have double-A players and singleA players. THREE TIPS TO GET YOUR GULF SHRIMP READY FOR THE GRILL: • PICK THE RIGHT SIZE Choose the largest size possible, preferably jumbo or colossal. One pound of jumbo size will yield 12 to 15 shrimp, or 10 colossal. Smaller shrimp are prone to falling through the grill rack. • CLEAN THEM UP Many recipes recommend that you devein the shrimp. Though it is not as important with smaller varieties, deveining large shrimp will help avoid getting a gritty bite. • GET READY TO GRILL You can marinate or grill with or without the shells. To peel, simply cut the shell along the back with a sharp knife, removing all but the tail.
