Chatham Historical Society Attempts World Record

T

he Chatham Historical Society will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Chatham Train Station by attempting to break the world record for the largest group of people to simultaneously blow wooden train whistles! Come out and join the Historical Society for the opportunity to make history on Saturday, June 14.

Currently, a group in Watts, Oklahoma holds the record of 396 people. An attempt at a new world record will occur on the field next to the Train Station at Fairmont Avenue and Railroad Plaza. Event-day registrations will be accepted at the Train Station from 9-10:45am. All participants must register—even if you have your own whistle—so an accurate number of participants can be documented. The official record attempt will begin on the field at 11:15am. The event is in conjunction with the annual Fishawack Festival. For more information or to register for the event, please visit www.chathamhistoricalsociety.org.

Willowwood Arboretum Offers Cell Phone Tour of Beautiful Historic Grounds

Bridal Boutique Opens Second Location in Berkeley Heights

V

irginia Calabrese and Louisa Monserrate have proven with many years of hands on experience that the “art of dressing a Bride” is not just putting on a dress, but selecting the right style for their figure, appropriate look for their venue, and choosing a dress within the bride’s budget. The keen professional eye of Virginia and Louisa (sisters in crime) shall make things a lot easier for the bride-to-be, as well as mother-of-the-bride, bridal party and guests. La Belle Boutique, NEW to Berkeley Heights, has a wonderful selection of dress choices for all. Their 3-story Jersey City Boutique has wonderful additional choices. They carry accessories and fashion items, which add to the ambience of this chic boutique. Their fashion sense has been developed and enhanced with the help of European buyers and working directly with fashion forward designers. Over the years, they have dressed thousands of women to the “nines.” They also offer expert fitting and alteration services for your current wardrobe as well. Join Virginia and Louisa for High Tea on Thursdays. A wonderful way to meet new people and experience a fun new way of shopping! La Belle Boutique, 457 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, 908-464-4100; 154 Danforth Avenue, Jersey City, 201-434-4143. For more information, visit our website: www.labelleboutique.com

C

reated in 1908 as a garden and plant collection by brothers Henry and Robert Tubbs and officially established as a public arboretum in 1950, the Willowwood Arboretum will be holding cell phone tours for all who are interested in viewing the beautiful historic grounds. The free hour-long tour can be heard by guests through their own cell phones by simply dialing a phone number and listening to the guide on the other line. According to Lesley Parness, a Superintendent of Horticultural Education for the Morris County Park Commission, “using cell phone technology helps us to share the story of Willowwood Arboretum with visitors and provide in-depth plant information.” Willowwood Arboretum contains approximately 130 acres of “themed gardens, plant collections, meadows, and native woodland in the Hacklebarney Hills on the southwest border of Morris County, New Jersey.” Approximately 2,500 plant species exist on the grounds, including displays of native and exotic plant collections that can be admired by viewers on these self-guided walking tours. It is also a fascinating historical site, as the grounds stand upon a farm that dates back to the 1700’s. The Willowwood Arboretum is located at 300 Longview Road in Chester Township and holds free tours daily from 8am until dusk yearround. The cell phone tours will be held through October with the support of the Willowwood Foundation.

HOME & GARDEN Using Salvage Items to Decorate Outdoor Living Spaces By Rhonda L. Rivera

W

ith the popularity of the green movement, new television channels like HGTV and the DIY Network plus social media sites such as Pinterest have spurred many to find new purposes for old items. “People love reusing items instead of throwing them away,” according to Patty Cain, owner of the Gypsy Farmhouse. “By repurposing pieces that were handmade over 100 years ago, the beautiful workmanship can be appreciated for many more years to come.”

Patty Cain

Sometimes people fall in love with a vintage item, but are at a loss as to what to do with it today. “We are the idea people. We give you ideas of what you can do with the item,” says Cain. For example:

• Prop up old ladders, vintage wooden or iron fence sections, or place vintage chairs in the garden and let vines climb up or around them • Place old shutters, iron gates, weather vanes or lightening rods around the backyard for decorative interest • Transform any sort of unusual containers, such as egg baskets, wooden crates, old porcelain sinks, oil cans, galvanized buckets and tubs and even old leather work shoes and sneakers into planters for flowers • Hang Amish tin barn stars, made from old roofing tins, onto the side of your garage

Taking TV Outdoors in Style

T

he outdoor TV market is a new and rapidly growing market that provides home theatre-quality viewing in your outdoor environment. Create your weekend getaway or a lazy weekday afternoon with high performance audio and video in your yard, by your pool, or the deck. New materials and technology make possible a variety of weatherproof equipment to withstand rain, snow, and even the blazing sun. “With the high quality of all-weather design speakers and TV’s, more and more families are starting to enjoy the audio/video experience in the outdoors.” States Al Dimeo of Samm Sound in West Caldwell. “What should I look for when re-evaluating home insurance coverage?”

Y

ou should look for a quality carrier, the carrier’s claims reputation, the nature of the coverage, and a premium that fits your budget.

Keep in mind that it is very important that you compare apples-to-apples when selecting the right home insurance coverage for your needs. Just as some people drive Fords while others choose Ferraris, insurance coverage varies widely. I recommend that you go to an independent insurance agent who serves the customer, not the carrier. An independent agent will be able to give you complete and unbiased coverage analysis so that you can rest assured that your insurance needs are being met.”

Health, Beauty & Fitness Rx for Walking Right

Save Time & Prevent Injury When Doing Yard Work

W

hile caring for your lawn can be pleasant, it needn’t take all day. Luckily, time saving tools can also save your body some wear and tear:

• Water plants with a heavy-duty sprayer. Since gardeners are prone to knee injuries from repetitive pressure placed upon the area, a sprayer you can use standing up is a better choice.

Y

ou can’t get very far along with a walking program if your feet hurt. Could you have flat feet? They could be the cause of pain in your arch? Do your feet pronate? You might get heel spurs. Most shoe manufacturers design shoes to compensate for these motion control issues. But how do you find the best fit for you? The first step is to shop in a store with a truly experienced staff. Take your old shoes; the wear patterns are a clue to what’s wrong with your stride. Chris Croff of Summit Running Company explains “We have a treadmill and camera in our store and analyze your gait as part of the fitting process. We can then recommend shoes that can help with your problem.” Before you hang up your walking shoes, find a pair that fit well. It just might get your walking program back on track.

• More than 38,000 Americans sustained raking-related injuries in 2012, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. For a more efficient collection of leaves, pine needles and grass clippings, consider using a high-performance lawn sweeper. • Save your back and some time by avoiding wheelbarrows and overthe-shoulder hauling. Instead, move tools, soil, mulch and yard clippings quickly and with ease with a cargo carrier or utility cart. • Shave off hours off yard work while also avoiding the repetitive arm, elbow, wrist and hand movements that cause injury with a dethatcher that gently combs dead grass and roots to the surface where they can be swept up. This season, make more of your days outdoors by spending less time doing chores and more time relaxing. —StatePoint

Keeping Headlice at Bay By Rhonda L. Rivera

Lice.

That four-letter word strikes fear into the hearts of many parents. With 6-12 million infestations each year in the United States in children ages 3-11 years, what can be done to stop them? First off, it’s important to note that personal hygiene has nothing to do with whether a child contracts lice. Secondly, lice are extremely contagious and annoying, but not dangerous and do not spread disease. Di Wang “Lice are spread by a number of ways, including headto-head contact,” explains Di Wang, owner of Pigtails & Crewcuts in Montclair. “The best way to reduce the risk of getting lice is by using preventative products and not sharing head accessories.” Two brands offer complete lines of preventative shampoos, conditioners, hairsprays and hair

gels. The “lice defense line” by Circle of Friends has a lavender scent which repels lice. The other brand, Fairy Tales, is scented with rosemary which similarly keeps lice at bay. Both brands are organic, non-toxic and contain no harsh chemicals. Should prevention tactics fail, however, both offer lice removal kits. According to Wang, one of the most popular lice prevention products is the leave-in spray conditioner. Many parents stop their kids on the way out the door and spray it on their hair, inside hats and on girls’ headbands and bows. Helmets, a main culprit of spreading lice as they are shared among teammates, should also be sprayed before each use. Wang notes that no special “lice season” exists, so prevention is key year-round. Both Circle of Friends and Fairy Tales brands are available at Pigtails & Crewcuts, 49 Claremont Ave., Montclair, 973-746-5437, www. pigtailsandcrewcuts.com/montclair.

Child Care Comes of Age By Rhonda L. Rivera

A

new model of early childhood education has emerged over the past fifteen years. Traditional notions of either day care (essentially full-time babysitting) or preschool (an introduction to the classroom via a shortened day) have evolved. Today’s savvy parents demand hybrid child care that focuses on the child’s individual development combined with flexible coverage hours. Child Care centers are now considered enrichment opportunities, offering age-appropriate curricula that is followed throughout the day, which can run from 7:30am to 6:30pm. An experienced and educated staff works with the children, monitoring developmental progress both socially and behaviorally, and providing daily reports to parents. “With our childcare programs, we see children with a high level of self-esteem and the ability to self-regulate. They are interested in

trying new things, and believe that it’s ok to fail,” says Corrine Harney, M.Ed., Executive Director of My Morning Out Programs located on South Fullerton Avenue in Montclair.

CORRINE HARNEY

Harney credits the national spotlight on early childhood education and the movement toward a universal pre-K for the changing views and new-found respect for the field. She also cites the Early Learning Standards enacted by the State of New Jersey last year for providing a common framework for areas of development and competencies. Harney notes, “The level and rate of growth between newborn until five years old is greater than any other time in life. There’s a new understanding and appreciation for the importance of these formative years.”

Established in 1860, the Academy of Saint Elizabeth is the oldest high school for girls in the state of New Jersey, a designation that affirms the highest levels of tradition and academic excellence. The Academy is an independent college preparatory school rooted in the traditions of excellence fostered by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth.

Founded in 1894, Kent Place School is New Jersey’s only independent, nonsectarian college preparatory day school for girls, with a co-educational preschool program. Small classes, individualized college counseling, state of the art technology, leadership development, interscholastic athletics and diverse options in the fine arts define a Kent Place education.

The mission of Mount Saint Mary Academy is to challenge each student to develop her fullest potential in a Christian atmosphere of love and caring. As a Catholic, private, secondary school owned and operated by Sisters of Mercy, Mount Saint Mary Academy is committed to academic excellence with special concern for women.

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

The Lonely Game of

“FOLLOW THE FOLLOWER” “I find that the very things that I get criticized for, which is usually being different and just doing my own thing and just being original, is the very thing that makes me successful.”

Barry Farber

— Shania Twain

M

any of the greatest ideas, inventions, cures and successes are developed when an individual takes an approach which differs from that of leaders before him or her. Often, the key to success is breaking away from the pack and following what the heart and mind has to say. The problem is that sometimes people are afraid to be different because they want to be accepted by their family, friends and peers. For most, this begins at a young age. Children wear the same types of sneakers and dress the same way in order to avoid standing apart from the crowd. This trend even follows individuals into adulthood. When people get a new job, they first look around to make sure that they are doing the same things that their co-workers are doing. When they see that others are doing what is familiar to them, they feel more comfortable about their own behavior and actions. The problem, however, is that many people are losing out on a plethora of incredible opportunities. People should always be asking, “is the person I’m following going where I want to go?” Years ago, in a small store on Main Street, a shopkeeper placed a large grandfather clock in his front window. The next morning, he saw a man walk by, take out his pocket watch, adjust the watch, put it back in his pocket and walk away. Every morning for the next four years, the shopkeeper observed this morning ritual. Then, one morning the shopkeeper was out sweeping the sidewalk when the man passed by, took out his watch, adjusted it, and put it back in his pocket. “Excuse me,” said the shopkeeper, “but I’ve been watching you do this every morning, every day for four years now. Can you tell me why?” “Certainly,” said the man. “I’m the foreman down at the mill. I blow the quitting whistle at five o’clock every day, and I want to be sure that my people get out on time.”

“You’re kidding me,” said the shopkeeper. “I’ve been setting my grandfather clock to your five o’clock whistle all these years!” The funny thing is, they could have been off by days or weeks. The shopkeeper and the mill foreman, like many people in today’s society, were caught up in a game called “follow the follower.” Instead of conducting their own investigation to find someone who truly has the qualities they wish to emulate, people tend to take on the group mentality. People want to be themselves, but they are afraid to be labeled as “different.” There is nothing inherently wrong with following. In fact, it is one of the most effective ways to learn. High achievers are constantly studying other people and their methods of accomplishment. The difference is that they are particular about the people from whom they choose to learn. They look for those whose values match their own and who have achieved excellence in their field. They surround themselves with models of success.

“When in doubt, make a fool of yourself. There is a microscopically thin line between being brilliantly creative and acting like the most gigantic idiot on earth. So what the hell, leap.” — Cynthia Heimel, writer and humorist
