n October 19, parents, coaches, players, athletic trainers and physical therapists joined John Gallucci, Jr. of JAG Physical Therapy, his team, and several physicians for “Injury Prevention for the Youth Athlete,” a pediatric sports medicine symposium. The event featured presentations on four areas of children’s athletic injuries: shoulder, foot and ankle, hip and knee. JAG Physical Therapy collaborates with many different physicians on programs for prevention of injury. Four very well respected pediatric orthopedic surgeons spoke at this symposium: Dr. Mark Reiger, Dr. David Lin, Dr. Joshua Strassberg and Dr. Meira Yeger-McKeever. “Each one of them did an unbelievable presentation on their individual topics,” said Gallucci, who emceed the event and joined Strassberg in the discussion about hip injuries. The other three doctors were joined by JAG physical therapists to discuss the rehabilitation portions of their presentations. Fantastic Fabric, Unbelievable Upholstery
F
or eight years, Fabric Factory Outlet has stood in a 3,000 square foot space with nearly 50,000 yards of fabric in stock, a huge selection of trim and numerous books for special orders—all at discounted prices. The store also has a staff of interior designers to help customers with their projects. Now the Fairfield company is adding a 2,000 square foot upholstery workroom right next door to expand their services, which also include window treatments, shades, slipcovers and bedding. Customers can visit the “one-stop” shop, pick out their fabric, and drop off their furniture. “We’ll be able to do any form of upholstery—headboards, cornices, you name it,” says owner Daniel Silva. “And we have a full professional staff of upholsterers that pick up and deliver.” To make things even easier, Fabric Factory lets customers e-mail a picture of what they want upholstered to FabricFactory2@gmail.com, and they’re “happy to provide estimates.” Fabric Factory Outlet • Gallo Mall, 390 Fairfield Rd., Fairfield 973-439-0333 • www.fabricfactoryoutlet.net

Rehab Reunion
n September 21, Daughters of Israel held its first “Rehab Reunion,” in honor of National Rehabilitation Awareness Week. After opening its new sub-acute rehabilitation facility almost two years ago and state-of-the-art gym, Daughters of Israel decided it would be nice to bring back graduates who had completed their rehab within the past two years to see the changes. “We had things planned, but everyone was so happy to speak to each other and reunite we just had the luncheon and everyone got rehab goodie bags,” says Director of PR/ Marketing Renee Glick. About 50 graduates attended the reunion at Daughters of Israel, whose rehab facility is one of the area’s premier providers of rehabilitation. Its program is ideal for people recovering from general, hip and cardiac surgery, joint replacement, medical illness with de-conditioning, prolonged hospitalization, fractures and complex wounds, as well as stroke rehabilitation and continued intravenous antibiotic therapy. To make an appointment to tour the facility or for more information, call 973-400-3307. Daughters of Israel • 1155 Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange 973-731-5100 • www.doigc.org

n the hunt for footwear that can help you meet your fitness goals? How about a pair of sleek, knee-high, leather franco Sarto boots with two-inch wedge heels? oK, they may not be ideal for a 5K run, but they just might help you get into better shape, says Mark needell, owner of nee Dell’s Shoes in Summit. The franco Sarto boots nee Dell’s Shoes sells are built for comfort, and comfortable feet are typically more active feet. “a comfortable shoe or boot is going to make you walk a little farther. You’re going to walk a few extra blocks going to dinner, because your feet won’t be as tired,” needell explained. needell knows his shoes. His family has been in the footwear business for three generations. His grandparents opened nee Dell’s Shoes 81 years ago and he’s proud to walk in their footsteps. nee Dell’s is spacious, modern, fun to shop in, and the footwear selection is fantastic. The experienced staff ensures customers are well attended to, and that they leave the store with footwear that not only fits their style, but their feet as well. When it comes to deciding what to stock, needell listens to his customers. “We ask what they like,” he said. “What’s nice about an independent shoe store is that we’re not dictated by corporate. We can buy whatever we want.” current customer favorites include: fringy, fun Minnetonka moccasins and boots; ultra-comfy UGG boots and slippers; Me too shoes, flats and boots, which have extra padding for comfort; and Dansko clogs and boots. “Dansko clogs are known as the number one kitchen shoe, so it’s a great shoe for standing in,” needell said. “one of our favorite brands is Pikolinos,” he added. “They are handmade in Spain and they are beautifully detailed shoes with nice, warm colors and soft leathers.” nee Dell’s also sells sporty Merrell footwear and apparel. “The apparel is very nice looking, but it’s also very athletically inspired,” needell said. “it’s clothing you can really wear and move in. it all has sun protection; it stretches in the right places.” Prices at nee Dell’s are comparable to those in chain shoe stores, and customers enjoy perks not often offered at chains: “We really show our appreciation to our customers. We give a sincere thank you for any purchase that is made,” needell said. “it’s a different experience—a better experience. it’s warmer.” s Nee Dell’s Shoes 386 Springfi eld Ave., Summit • 908-273-2042 www.needells.com

Does your dog jump on everyone that comes through the door? Is he chewing up your living room? Tired of getting yanked down the street by your dog? Dog behavior consultant and trainer Fernando Camacho will discuss common behavior problems as well as work on your dog’s individual issues. You’ll learn why your dog is doing all those bad things and get advice on how to help correct the behaviors. The seminar includes a Q&A so bring your questions (No dogs - humans only). Free but a donation would be appreciated for the Ferndogrescue. Reservations are necessary, call 973-740-8500. 7–8pm, Pups@Play, 42 Okner Parkway, Livingston.
In conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, SAGE is conducting free and confidential memory screenings. Memory screenings are used for: anyone concerned about memory loss or experiencing warning signs of dementia, family and friends who have noticed changes in them, or those who believe they are at risk due to a family history of Alzheimer’s disease or a related illness. Screenings also are appropriate for anyone who would like a baseline measurement for their memory for future comparison. Deanna Butters, Director of Spend-ADay, also leads a discussion on strategies to improve your memory. 2–4pm, SAGE Eldercare, 290 Broad St., Summit. 908-598-5548.

A guide to Men’s health
S
taying healthy requires diligence. you need to exercise regularly, eat well, get physical exams and stay apprised of what’s best for you to feel and look great. Many men, however, either neglect their health or rely on a significant female in their lives to help them maintain it. a survey conducted by the Men’s Health Network polled 1,500 physicians and found that, compared to women, men are more remiss in getting annual checkups, more reluctant to discuss health concerns with their physicians and less likely to seek medical attention or adhere to a treatment plan. Here we offer a brief guide on men’s health that touches on prostate disease, cardiac fitness and weight lifting.
PRoSTATE DISEASE
While you may know about prostate cancer, you might not be familiar with other types of prostate disease, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (also called BPH) and prostatitis. Both are extremely common and can occur simultaneously. BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that develops in nearly every man as he gets older. The condition can first appear after age 30, and more than half of all men will have had BPH by age 60. Symptoms include an urgent feeling to uri-
nate, hesitancy when urinating, a slow urinary stream and frequent urination. Prostatitis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the prostate that affects men of all ages and generally involves a bacterial infection. In some instances, prostatitis is nonbacterial and labeled as prostatodynia. Symptoms are similar to those for BPH, and also include pain or burning during urination and accompanying fever and chills. Doctors diagnose BPH and prostatitis by performing a rectal exam to feel the prostate. They may also conduct urine flow and voiding studies. Medication is the first-line treatment for both conditions—alphablockers for BPH and anti-inflammatory agents and/or antibiotics for prostatitis. In extreme cases of BPH, doctors may advise minimally invasive procedures such as transurethral microwave therapy, interstitial laser therapy and transurethral needle ablation—all of which can be performed in a urologist’s office under local anesthesia, with few side effects and fast recovery. to maintain good prostate health, doctors advocate staying well hydrated, moderating intake of spicy foods and alcohol, and adding extra zinc and vitamin e to your diet.
CARDIAC FITNESS
according to the american Heart association, 47 million american adults have metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that raise the risk for heart disease and diabetes. These risk factors include obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. Studies show that staying fit can decrease such risk factors and improve cardiac health. The american College of Sports Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend 30 minutes of physical activity daily. aerobic movements such as walking, running, swimming and bicycling help the heart pump more efficiently and become stronger. a healthy heart uses less beats to push the blood through, so
it experiences less stress. your target heart rate during exercise should reach 65 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate and should be maintained for 20 minutes. use the following formula to calculate target heart rate: 220 minus your age, multiplied by .65.
WEIghT LIFTINg
as men grow older, muscle mass and bone strength diminish just as they do in women. Weight training can help minimize these losses, as well as ward off disease, maintain weight and prevent injuries and falls. With any weight lifting program, every major muscle group should be worked on to avert muscle imbalance. experts suggest starting with lightweight free weights and performing three sets of eight to 12 reps— one set of 10 to 15 reps is fine as a warmup—for each muscle group. Compound movements, which use more than one joint, help build mass. Movement in general should be slow, smooth and controlled, and involve full range of motion. Breathe in at the start of the movement and exhale as you carry it out. Rest approximately one minute between sets to allow muscles to recover, but not become too relaxed. Space workouts 48 hours apart, as lifting too frequently can overstress the muscles and inhibit them from growing and repairing themselves. Once your muscles have become stronger, add weight to your training regimen. s

f you don’t have the extra money to spend on salon manicures every week or two, but love the look and strength of perfectly painted gel polish, you’re in for a treat. Not only can anyone apply Nutra Nail Gel Perfect UVFree Gel-Color ($11.99) easily at home, but its special formula allows polish to completely dry, without a UV lamp, in a matter of minutes. The application process is simple. First, apply a coat of the activator, then a coat of polish. Repeat, wait five minutes, and nails are rock hard and shiny—you can go back to doing everyday things without worrying about smudging. One last perk: instead of soaking nails in acetone for 15 minutes or more, Nutra Nail’s No-Mess Express Gel Perfect Remover ($5.99) removes polish in just two minutes.

e all know the scene. It’s Thanksgiving evening, and everyone’s sprawled out on the couch, stuffed, satisfied and sleepy. Between yawns, people are quick to blame the evening’s unofficial guest for their sudden urge to nap, but as it turns out: the turkey’s innocent! It’s true that turkey contains tryptophan, an amino acid that, among other things, helps the body produce serotonin, which is used to make melatonin. Both serotonin and melatonin contribute to sleep aid, so in turn, tryptophan does too. However, turkey contains no more tryptophan than other kinds of poultry—it even contains less than chicken. And, eating foods high in tryptophan doesn’t necessarily lead to sleepiness. So what’s to blame for Thanksgiving grogginess? Probably the heavy amount of overeating that many of us indulge in—digesting that much food takes a lot of energy. But the food is good, and no one said sleep was a bad thing…so gobble gobble!

re you someone who wears heels all the time and insists that they are more comfortable than flats? People may roll their eyes at you, but according to a British study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, you aren’t making it up! The study found that women who wore high heels on a daily basis had shorter calf muscle fibers and thicker, stiffer Achilles’ tendons than women who didn’t wear heels. Since the heel wearers’ tendons didn’t lengthen to compensate for the shorter calf, their tendons couldn’t stretch adequately on flat feet, thereby leading to discomfort. Fortunately, doing a few stretching exercises can help combat these changes and reduce pain experienced while walking without heels. Try doing daily calf stretches, such as sitting with your legs straight and reaching for your toes. The study leader, Marco Narici, also suggested standing on your toes on a stair and lowering your heels as far as possible, then raising them back up again, using the railing to balance. DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber
Excerpt From My Book, Diamond in the Rough
M
My Interview with Boone Pickens
any of the people interviewed for this book came from athletic backgrounds, are currently involved in fitness programs, or at the very least, use sports analogies to explain their success. One person who believes strongly in the value of physical fitness is the renowned and sometimes controversial chairman and CEO of Mesa Inc., Boone Pickens. Pickens calls his company “the most physically fit company in America.” He constructed a first-class, two-million-dollar athletic facility for the company, and company benefits include use of the gym and participation in the corporate Wellness program. It is Picken’s contention that fit employees are “more productive, more creative, and more competitive.” Pickens expects extra effort from his employees (as he does from himself ) from day one of any project right through to its conclusion. To motivate people, he often uses sports metaphors when he speaks, whether it’s to a meeting of his shareholders or to one of his employees. This is especially true when he talks about preparation, which is to him one of the cornerstones of any successful endeavor, and which requires just as much ef-
fort as any other part of a project. “You could set up a booth right here on the corner in front of the building and interview people passing by,” says Pickens. “You could ask them, ‘Would you like to play for the Dallas Cowboys?’ Probably one out of ten would say, ‘You’re darn right I would.’ Then you would say, ‘Let me put this meter on you to see if you would really like to play quarterback as much as Troy Aikman would.’ I think you would actually have people on that meter who would score higher than Troy Aikman at wanting to play--not to take anything away from his commitment. But it won’t work. And the reason it won’t work is because those people are not prepared.” It is Picken’s belief that the lack of preparation causes a lack of confidence, whether it’s “Taking a girl out, taking a test, or having to stand up in front of a group.” And to Pickens, the best preparation of all is “hands on experience. You can read all you want to,” he says, “but if you’ve never been there to fly the airplane, you better be a pretty good reader when they say, ‘Okay, you’re going to fly.’” In a speech Pickens often gives to share-
holders and to college Students around the Barry Farber country, he offers several suggestions to help people who want to get ahead. Some of those suggestions are: • Learn to analyze well. There’s no substitute for good research • Don’t be afraid to act. Someone once described the management of a major American corporation to Pickens by saying, “They analyze well, but then it’s like, ready, aim, aim, aim, aim… they never can bring themselves to fire.” • Be a team player. As long as you work for someone, you owe them your allegiance and support. If you find that you are constantly dissatisfied or frustrated, go somewhere else. • Never cheat to win. Business has rules; there’s no reason to break them. • Don’t let success go to your head. No matter how successful you are, don’t ever get to where you can’t go back to eating hamburgers. Pickens summarized his formula for success this way: “Come early. Stay late. Work hard. Play by the rules. Stay physically fit.”
Barry Farber consults with businesses to help them break through sales clutter and land more deals. He specializes in developing simple yet creative strategies that get results. He is the best-selling author of 11 books, a black-belt weapons expert, and a regular on QVC marketing innovative products.
