Santa Comes to Summit for Annual Tree Lighting
D
owntown Summit will kick off the holiday season on Sunday, December 8 with the arrival of Santa from the rooftop of the Summit YMCA, children’s activities on the Village Green and culminates with the Annual Tree Lighting. Activities begin at 2:30pm with live music, holiday sculptures being designed out of blocks of ice, and many children’s activities. Children can color paper gift bags and are invited to make a donation of an adult winter hat or pair of gloves to be distributed to those in need. Santa arrives at 3pm and will be joined by his elves in the gym of the YMCA to greet children until 4:30pm. The activities will continue on the Village Green until 4:45pm when Mayor Ellen Dickson will be on hand for the Annual Tree Lighting. For additional information visit www.summitdowntown.org
Young Playwrights Competition Seeks Entrants
T
he Theatre Project’s 12th Annual Young Playwrights Competition is accepting applicants for this year’s competition. The contest gives young playwrights, between the ages of 13 and 18-years-of-age, the opportunity to submit their work and see it come to life, performed by professional actors on stage. Three winning plays will be produced at a special performance and awards ceremony in March 2014. In addition, First, Second and Third place winners are awarded $300, $200 and $100 respectively. “In tough economic times, the arts sometimes get short shrift as people struggle to make ends meet and schools see their

budgets shrink,” Theatre Project Producer Daamiah Talley states. “We want to make sure that kids know how important their creative endeavors are by showing them in front of the community.” Submissions will be accepted through Monday, January 20, 2013. Entrants are permitted one submission each. European Wax Center Opens in Berkeley Heights
he official grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration for European Wax Center Berkeley Heights was held on Sunday, October 27. The day kicked off at 1pm and included Berkeley Heights Mayor, Joseph Bruno, European Wax Center Regional Developer, Bob Weisman, local residents, family and friends and the entire EWC team. Children Display their “Pictures of Hope”
O
n Thursday, November 21, 2013, children from the Jersey Battered Women’s Service (JBWS) put images of their hopes and dreams on display at Gearhart Chevrolet in Denville as part of the “Pictures of Hope” event. The images, taken by the children and meant to represent what hope and dreams are to them, were turned into holiday greeting cards, with all proceeds benefitting the JBWS. Linda Solomon, a photojournalist, author and creator of “Pictures of Hope,” taught photography at JWBS this fall, where children were surprised with a camera, and given the assignment to take photos of their “hopes and dreams.” The cards are available for purchase through Regina (Jeanne) Braham, the Director of Community Relations at JBWS. Stay Out of Harm’s Way While You Earn Your Pay

ith all the hours we put in at the office, it’s no surprise that many of us sustain injuries on the job. Such mishaps can compromise our health, while costing millions of dollars in lost productivity.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is the premier source for ensuring that work environments in the United States are secure for employees. OSHA establishes safety regulations, provides safety information and offers training in safety compliance. Still, much of the success in keeping staffers safe lies with staffers themselves. By taking personal responsibility and understanding any inherent risks at your workplace, you can help lower your chance for related illness or injury. Here’s how:
Stay Alert and Awake
It’s important to be aware of your surroundings, so to avoid falling into a lull, take regular breaks to get up and stretch. This is especially helpful when you’ve been performing a repetitive task or have been deeply engaged in a project and working long hours. Also, complete the most taxing items on your to-do list when you’re most attentive and your concentration is best. And refrain from drinking alcohol, which has been shown to play a role in many workplace incidents.
Avert Slips and Falls
Falls and slips are the leading cause of workplace injuries. To prevent them, start by keeping your own workspace free of debris and organized. Watch for spills on the floor and arrange for immediate cleanup when necessary. Use only approved safety harnesses and/or ladders to access materials up high, with a spotter if possible. Wear nonskid shoes if you work around potentially slippery surfaces. And don’t lean on railings or office machinery, which may give way. 30

Lift Correctly
If you have to lift a heavy load, check first to see if a hand, shelf or platform truck or even another person is available. If not, test how heavy the load is by seeing how easily it moves with a push, and then make sure it’s properly packed so you don’t lose your balance. Keep the load as close as possible to your body, then straighten your back, bending at the knees rather than at the waist, and lift slowly with both hands. Let your arms and legs do all the work and try not to jerk your body. And if you have minor back problems, consider wearing a brace when lifting.

THE POWER OF BREATHING
id you know we breathe 20,000 times a day? Proper breathing brings oxygen to the blood and improves circulation, which helps relieve stress, increase energy, strengthen the immune system, and relieve congestion among other benefits. I’ve always been fascinated with the use of breathing techniques in martial arts and their overall health benefits. Sensei Greg O’Connor, 6th degree black belt, chief instructor and founder of Aikido Centers of New Jersey, is a local expert in the art of breathing and using this internal power in all types of situations, especially difficult ones.
Barry Farber: Where does ki or chi energy come from? Sensei Greg O’Connor: The word “aikido” literally means “the way (do) of harmony (ai) with the spirit or life force (ki).” Your breath is inseparable from ki because you’re living and breathing. There are all types ki, positive and negative. BF: What can people do when they wake up in the morning to feel better, think clearer, and become healthier? Sensei: Let’s concentrate on breath. There are many disciplines regarding conscious attention to your breath but the fundamental thing is to be conscious of breathing in and breathing out. One basic method is to breathe in through your nose and let it settle in your belly doing deep abdominal breathing or diaphragmatic breathing—allowing the diaphragm to move up and down for fuller capacity breathing. Once your breath settles to your lower belly, relax your shoulders and allow your lower belly to expand and “breathe like a baby.” If you watch a baby breathe its belly goes in and out naturally. BF: This is different from the breathing in your chest that happens in a fight-or-flight situation. Sensei: Right. But ideally, we should maintain deep breathing even as those responses kick in to keep our self-control and balance. Breathing should be deep, relaxed and natural but we’ve been programmed all our lives to have chest out, stomach in, military style. In boot camp it’s meant to cause some tension and to heighten attention while already in a tense state. Instead, when your breath comes in through your nose, goes down to your lower belly and out through your mouth, you maintain some oxygen in your nasal passages and you’ll have cyclical breathing, rather than back and forth.
BF: What do you mean by that? Sensei: It’s physiology. Even though your mouth and your nasal passages meet at the back of your throat that method creates a cycle of breath and a certain percentage of oxygen stays in your nasal passages, ready for the next inhalation. This is opposed to in and out through the nose or through your mouth—which does not retain oxygen. All methods have their value but I believe cyclical is the best one for someone to become conscious of their breath. When you wake up, stand for a moment at a comfortable posture. This allows you to take a relaxed deep breath. Just thinking about taking a deep breath brings you to a comfortable posture. These simple conscious actions enable us to achieve a state of “being centered” where we have optimum balance on all levels at that moment. BF: So posture is key for circulation and proper breathing? Sensei: Yes, they work together to give you a centered state. In a centered state you’re better at handling everything that comes at you in any way. BF: A lot of people in sports seem to use this technique prior to an event or pressure situation to reduce stress and increase focus. I’ve also read that 80% of doctor visits are due to stress. Breathing seems to be an effective tool to reduce or eliminate it. Sensei: Yes. Now it’s hard to focus on breath all day long because we have activities we’re involved in, but the more you do it consciously the more it becomes part of your being. BF: With practice we become unconsciously competent—not thinking about what we should be doing. Mushin… no mind. Sensei: Exactly. Our breath is linked to our emotions and most of the time we’re not conscious of that. When we’re upset our breath is affected and becomes shallower. Then our body automatically starts to release other chemicals creating a stressful state that affects us on every level without us necessarily being aware of it. This can linger if the proper signals aren’t sent to cease that state and the release of those chemicals. So just by breathing into your nose, exhaling through your mouth, and relaxing your body while you’ve become conscious of the emotion can reduce the stress. You can consciously change the chemical reaction and the overall effect of the emotion on you. s

12 slices Prosciutto di San Daniele 12 large eggs
1/2 pound kale 1 large Anjou or Bartlett pear, sliced
Preheat oven to 400°F.
1/2 cup Grana Padano shards
Fold one slice of Prosciutto di San Daniele in half crosswise to make a rectangle. Fit into a muffin cup.
