N

ick Rivera Caminero also known as Nicky Jam on stage is a Latin urban singer and songwriter who became worldwide known after hitting the radio stations with the apologetic success of the single “Yo No Soy Tu Marido” in 2003 del album Kilates, segundo impacto.

In 2010 after performing a few concerts in Colombia, the artist decided to give his career a 360 Turn and move to Colombia. The new audience inspired his new lyrics making powerful singles like “Tu Primera Vez”, “Piensas en Mi”, “Curiosidad”, “Juegos Prohibidos” and, most notably, “Voy A Beber”. He also worked with Daddy Yankee again, after 8 years of not working together in the non official duo “Los Cangris”.

His beginnings are the results of being surrounded by urban rhythms during his early teen years which lead him to the arenas of reggaeton music. Nick Rivera found his artistic name after a homeless friend called him Nicky Jam several times as form of joke. At that moment, he did not know how catchy this nickname will sound when the urban movement will invade all radio stations in the 90’s. Coming from a low income family, at the age of 11, the young Nick worked illegally in a grocery’s store to help his parents financially and it was there, in the mids of urban sound, when the little nick started improvising his lyrics. In front of the grocery’s store he spent his free time mixing words and rhythms until was noticed by a Music Lebel representative who signed him to a label. 16 | vida toronto magazine | www.VIDA.To

Today, the reggaeton star still resides in Colombia, where he has been able to jumpstart his music career, find success and become on of the hottest artis out. Between all the national artist he was chosen to interpret The Colombian national soccer team official anthem leading up to the international Copa América tournament, with the song “Un Sueño”. At the age of eleven he recorded his first album “Distinto a los Demás” the album was not successful; however, it did gain him recognition in the music industry, and got the attention of some music producers like DJ Joe, DJ Playero, DJ Chiklin. From the moment on he worked hardly producing seven albums along his career in solo and with participations of different artist such Daddy Yankee, R.K.M & Ken-Y, Héctor & Tito, Lito & Polaco, Big Boy, Magnate & Valentino and many others.

The artist has stated in different opportunities that he consideres himself a Colombian at heart since his audience makes him feel at home. Without doubts, during the last two years we have heard a fresh and innovated Nicky Jam. For those who have followed him from his beginnings, this is not a new Nicky Jam, the same “Cangry” that is moving and leading “The New Latin Urban Movement” of this era in the same way he did in the 90’s because as Latin people say, “ Los Caballeros Siempre Repiten”.

LA OTRA DIMENSION GRAN CONCIERTO EN TORONTO By: Luz Sthella Peña C. & Jhael Martinez
