THE DREAM WE CARRY We are all very excited to present Norwegian literature as the guest of honour in Frankfurt, under the slogan The dream we carry. This spirit resonates well with the wonderful and adventurous journey of this publishing house. Little did Arno Vigmostad and Arnstein Bjørke know of this when they started printing and selling exam review-papers from their student flat almost thirty years ago. During the following years the small student enterprise would branch into academic publishing and education under the well-known brand Fagbokforlaget. Fifteen years ago Arno Vigmostad wanted to publish a few of his favourite crime authors – that was the start of Vigmostad & Bjørke, now one of the biggest publishers in Norway. Vigmostad & Bjørke has steadily grown into a broad, energetic and up and coming publishing house for adult fiction, and a wide range of distinguished non-fiction from documentary, biography and history to food and lifestyle. Vigmostad & Bjørke, together with its talented imprint Ena, is now one of the major publishers of children’s books with excellent authors, illustrators and well-known children’s brands. I am proud to present a selection of our titles here. We hope you find some of interest. Enjoy!

The Banana and the Moon Max Estes
An absurd and stylistically accomplished picture book about the greatest attempted coup of all time. A cheeky and ambitious banana has a big dream to take the moon’s place in the night sky. It sets off on a long and hazardous journey to reach its goal. Along the way, it gets to know a number of characters, among them a cat, a seagull and a whale. Not everybody shares the banana’s belief in its crazy project, but the banana won’t give up. It’s the night sky or bust! Max Estes tells an absurd and unusual tale, relatable to all children. Will the banana reach its goal? Look out of the window on the next starry night and see for yourself!
• Based on objects and phenomena all children know well – with a cheeky banana as the main character! • A visual delight, the book is minutely crafted down to its tiniest detail • A transcendent, boundary-pushing work

Funny “history lesson” from a leading, internationally acclaimed picture book artist.

Did you know they have found fossilized accordions in blocks of granite outside Drammen? Or that the Vikings would barter for tango shoes during their raids? As it happens, the shoes were too small, so they ended up selling them to some Swedes, but still. Multi-awardwinning Fam Ekman takes every liberty in telling the story of the tango, a subject most children would have no idea they were interested in.

John Jensen takes the Night Train Henrik Hovland and Torill Kove (ill.)
John Jensen is finally back after 10 years! This time around every child’s favourite Tax Advisor is going to Bergen on a conference. A town full of Bergeners. To get there he has to travel on the night train. He will have to sleep together with people he doesn’t know, pass through unfamiliar places and go through dark tunnels. The challenges are quickly piling up for our anxious crocodile friend. The first three books about John Jensen have turned into modern classics in Norway. We are happy and proud to have him back.
“(…) if you have come to like the crocodile who works as a Tax Advisor and battles with issues we all recognize; you won’t let him go so easily (…) the illustrations contribute to creating the harmonious atmosphere that characterizes these books about the crocodile. Reading about John Jensen actually slows down your heart rate.” Kristine Isaksen, Bergens Tidende About John Jensen experiences a miracle

The Story
Tor Fretheim and Øyvind Torseter (ill.)
A clever picture book on the creation of a story and how difficult it can be to capture it on paper, about how it originates as an idea in the author’s mind and becomes a finished story that eventually belongs to the reader. We meet a writer who is fed up with sitting alone in front of a blank sheet of paper and who goes out on the street hunting for inspiration and an adventure. People soon start following him, excited to see if he will find his story. Tor Fretheim (1946–2018) wrote mostly for children and young adults; his books have been translated into several languages. His breakthrough was The angels stop at the fairy tale bridge, for which he received the Norwegian Critics’ Award. He received several awards in his lifetime such as the Ministry of Culture's literary prize and the Aschehoug Prize. Tor Fretheim sadly passed away suddenly in December 2018. Øyvind Torseter (b. 1972) has illustrated several picture books, written by both himself and by others. In 2014 he received the Nordic Council Literature Prize for Brown, written by Håkon Øverås. He has won a number of Norwegian and international prizes, amongst them the Bologna Ragazzi Award and Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis.

The mole walks past the bakery, suddenly feeling very peckish. What is that lovely smell? The inevitable happens: our friend steals a pie cooling off on the windowsill. But what was supposed to be a tasty treat, soon turns sour. Can a mole outrun his own conscience?
We first met the peckish mole in the award-winning picture book Knock on Wood. In this standalone sequel, the mole encounters irresistible temptation, and faces a dilemma he needs to solve – ideally before the pie goes cold. Cold pie isn’t as tasty as warm pie. Everybody knows that.

What’s the Deal with the Climate? Ole Mathismoen and Jenny Jordahl Green Stuff – About Nature and the Environment and Stuff Like That has stayed on the bestseller lists since its launch, an achievement crowned with a shortlisting for the Brage Prize. This sequel delves deep into the ongoing climate crisis, taking a closer look at what is about to happen, why it’s happening, what the consequences will be, and what can be done about it. It’s heavy, complex stuff, but handled in a smart, funny, easy to understand way by two masters of their craft. Yet again the authors show up as cartoon characters – in a longer, brand new comic. Jenny Jordahl has a unique and playful style, and Ole Mathismoen has reported on climate and environmental issues as a journalist for more than 30 years. The two appear as characters in the comic strips which makes complex and sometimes difficult topics more accessible to the reader.

Since his father died, Bendik has mostly kept to himself. He strolls along rivers and streams for hours, for without his father the little house he shares with his mother and sisters feels even bleaker. The former schoolmaster Ole has put his old pulpit in his cowshed. People say he’s mad, but he lets Bendik carry hay to the goats, and feeds him warm pastries. Bendik invites Ole to spend Christmas with him and his family, but on his way home, he crashes through the ice with the goats … entering a town between Heaven and Earth that simply will not let him go.

At han hørte hjertet mitt. At det var meg han så.

View From the Closet Sanne Mathiassen
Absurd, raw and told with dark humour about being dumped – and then moving in to your ex’s closet. When the protagonist is dumped by her partner, she first returns home to her grandmother’s house. But there’s a limit to how long you can live off soup and wait for a father who never returns and maybe you might just as well move in to your ex’s closet? The closet is a glass cabinet and her ex’s new life makes her reflect upon her own life with criticism, not unlike Facebook. Sanne Mathiassen (b. 1983) grew up in Finnsnes in Troms county in northern Norway. She has completed the Creative writing for children and young adults course at the Norwegian Institute for Children’s Books. Her debut came in 2012 with the critically acclaimed The days before May. Winter on the savannah Levi Henriksen and Leah Henriksen
Winter on the savannah is an unusual literary fatherdaughter project. Levi Henriksen has written a YA novel in collaboration with his teenage daughter Leah. The starting point of the novel is equally unusual: up a tree surrounded by aggressive hippos on the Kenyan savannah. The protagonist Eleanor is wondering which is worse: to be eaten by hippos or continue to live. Winter on the savannah Is a story of a holiday gone wrong. The reader gradually learns that Eleanor is traveling with her stepfather who she barely knows, and their circumstances are such that they need to relate to one another. It is a story of animal rights and preservation of natural diversity. But first and foremost it is a story of grief and great loss. Levi Henriksen has previously written several critically acclaimed books for both children and adults. In this novel he takes us to the savannah, and into the mind of a young girl who is searching for direction in life. Levi Henriksen (b. 1964) is both a writer and a musician. Henriksen is particularly known for his award-winning and popular tales from the fictitious place Skogli. He was awarded the Booksellers' Prize in 2004 and the School Librarians' Literature Prize in 2017. Leah Henriksen (b. 2006) is currently studying Energy and Environmental Physics at NMBU in Ås. Her main areas of interests are PE, literature, British bands, animal rights and the environment.

She’s brought along her telescope to the beach as usual, dreaming of becoming an astronaut. But nothing is as it should be this summer. Even her friendship with Olivia is threatened by Hanna’s big secret, the one she would rather have left on the mainland. Are you really friends if you only meet every summer? Can you fall in love with a boy with a different worldview? And what’s the point of stars if you can no longer see them, anyway? When Am I Old Enough to Shoot My Dad? Åse Ombustvedt and Marianne Engedal (ill.) This year’s most important and painful book is a series of poems for teens. A nameless teenager lives with a violent father. Through his thoughts and observations, we get up close with a young boy and a family, constantly living in the shadow of a simmering volcano. How does physical and mental abuse affect a young mind? What does this young person carry with him through life and in his encounters with the wider world? This is a little book about a large and difficult topic which effects more people than we know. Some books can change lives. Maybe even save them. This is one such book.

Rituals Kristin Hauge
Kristin Hauge received brilliant reviews for her collection of short stories The Beggars in 2018. Now she has written her first novel – the strong, contemporary story Rituals. Rituals unfolds in just a few days and circles around the lives of thirty year old Ally and her divorced parents Victor and Harriet. We meet Ally on her way home from foreign services in Afghanistan. Her father, Victor, receives a disturbing message from his doctor, and at the same time Harriet makes plans for big changes in her life. Now all three are facing different life choices. Will the choices they make drive them further apart? How do we respond when death breaths down our neck and we find it hard to talk about the important things in life? Rituals can bind people together, can be both transformative and confirmative, but what kind of rituals can guide us in our lives when the old ones disappear? Rituals is a profoundly human novel about the art of living and dying.

The Parfumier Margit Walsø
A year in Provence meets Eat, Pray, Love. It’s the late sixties. Ingrid is 25 years old and unhappy in her job at a lab in Trondheim. One day she finds a perfume organ in the basement of her childhood home: a custom-made shelf containing her father’s collection of perfume essences. She decides right there and then to travel to Grasse in Provence to search for the hidden parts of her dead father’s life. The search takes her to the mysterious Sonja Remy at the famous perfume factory, counting names like Chanel, Dior, and Guerlain among her customers. A power struggle is brewing between the two women, coming to a head when Ingrid discovers Sonja’s secret.
“Walsø really knows how to compose a narrative. Using the build-up of the perfume to form the structure of Ingrid’s story is a clever and thrilling move. The art of making a “well composed” scent is closely linked to the art of writing a good story.” Elin Brænd Bjørhei (VG) «Margit Walsø leaves small hints in the text, with a crime writer’s sensibility of timing.” Bjørn Gabrielsen (Dagens Næringsliv) ENGLISH MANUSCRIPT AVAILABLE

“Braathen’s sensitivity to local dialects and her brutal depiciton of the urban landscape reminds us of Nesbø’s writing. There is the edginess of crime fiction in the portrayal of some of the characters, especially the main character’s bitter, walker-using neighbour.”

Harp Song from a Silent Wood Laila Brenden
Harp Song from a Silent Wood is a story of love and betrayal chronicling a woman’s journey from deep in the Norwegian woods to the great concert halls of Europe. Ane Solingen, an independent woman with captivating eyes, has a unique inner strength. Is this why the people of the village dislike her? She has found happiness with her boyfriend Hans and they live in harmony with nature on a small homestead in the forest. One day Hans doesn’t come home. Her life unravels when she finds him dead in the woods. Some weeks thereafter she understands that she is expecting his child, and has no choice but to seek help from the villagers. To her surprise they show her kindness and she receives a gift that will change her life forever. When tragedy strikes anew, Ane is better prepared. She knows what to do, but not that this will change her life dramatically. She is willing to sacrifice everything for the most important person in her life. The novel is set at the turn of the last century, and is the first of three volumes of an epic "feel good" saga.

The Black Viking Bergsveinn Birgisson
This story begins in Rogaland year 846 AD. One day a very special royal son is born- Geirmund Heljarskinn. But we know almost nothing about this personality, there is no saga about him, and posterity has done its best to forget him. Why? We know that his mother was from Siberia, therefore, he was born with Asian features. Geirmund Heljarskinn becomes the “Black Viking” – the most powerful settler on Iceland of all time. Dark-skinned and with Mongolian facial features he was a pioneer in international hunting economy. Heljarskinn had hundreds of slaves; Christians from Scotland and Ireland. 1100 years later a distant relative of Geirmund, author Bergsveinn Birgisson, addresses the question of Geirmund Heljarskinn´s life, and why he is forgotten. Old fragments, modern genetics and information collected on trips to faraway places is put together, creating a fascinating and shocking portrayal of a raw and poetic past. Rarely, if ever, has the Viking Age been introduced to us in this way.
“The Black Viking is a sensational work; nothing but a newly written Icelandic saga from the early settlers on Iceland. It differs from the classical sagas. This is an alloy of academic historical and philological scrutiny and impressive penmanship.” Jan Askelund (Stavanger Aftenblad) FULL ENGLISH TRANSLATION AVAILABLE
“A masterpiece! I have never been interested in Siberia. Not until now. Nor did I ever find the Viking period interesting either. Not until now. This book presents a rare knowledge at a time when stories about humanity are supposedly not worth publishing anymore.” Mona Ringvej (Aftenposten)

Olav Tryggvason was the great grandson of Harald Fairhair, grew up in Russia, brought Christianity to Norway and founded the city of Trondheim before he died in the battle of Svolder year 1000 AD. So the story has been told for 800 years. But what if none of this is true? Historian Øystein Morten has traveled from Russia to Wales and found quite a different story about Olav and his time. This is a story about the brutal fight for power between pretenders to the throne of Denmark, clashes between opposing armies outside the city walls of London, beastly sexual rites and human sacrifice. The author gives us captivating insight into the history of Norway, the introduction of Christianity in four countries and the discovery of a new continent.
Welcome to one of the most extreme travelogues in Northern European history around the year 1000 AD!

Northern Waters Per Anders Todal
This is the story of four northern European oceans: the cold Barents Sea, the deep, mighty Norwegian Sea, the shallow North Sea and the narrow Skagerrak. These oceans are among the richest in the world, teeming with fish, whales, birds and seals, and they have supported human life along the shores for more than 11,000 years. Northern Waters shows the vital roles these seas have played in European history, through fishing, hunting, travels and trade. For millennia, these oceans were barely affected by the deeds of mankind. Now, the myriads of life forms beneath the surface are threatened by global warming, acidification, pollution and trawling. In Northern Waters natural science, history, mythology and travelogues are intertwined with a journey of personal discovery: the author’s many journeys at sea serve as starting points for larger stories. Drawing on a wealth of sources from marine biology, oceanography, geology, archaeology and more, the author conveys his knowledge in a clear and accessible language with exceptional literary qualities.
“A fantastic deep dive … this book exudes vigour and
vitality combined with knowledge, insight and love of the ocean. The language makes it a sheer joy to read.” Dag O. Hessen in Klassekampen
