Dear Reader

Meher Castelino

It’s difficult for me to find a word similar to ‘exciting.’ The reason I need one is because January was an exciting month for the beauty industry, but February was positively ‘happening.’ And around these two words are build our stories for this issue. We, as an industry, were eagerly waiting for the Union Budget. With no direct or dramatic implications on our sector, the post-Budget aftermath has been a peaceful one. We spoke with a few key leaders to understand their take on the Finance Minister’s plans for this fiscal, and we will be presenting these as part of our proposed series of exclusive curated features for our website www.beauteespace.net. Since our headquarters are based in New Delhi, we are quite sensitive to the state of affairs in the capital vis-a-vis the salon space. We were, therefore, surprised to witness the shutting down of basement areas in retail businesses by Delhi authorities. Affected salon owners took to the streets to show their dissent and protest against this arbitrary procedure. Beauty Launchpad took to social media to show our support for the protest. Apart from our on-ground activities, we have to deliver to salon owners, hairdressers, beauticians and all those working within the beauty spectrum the best possible news. So, here we are with our hair colour special issue. With so much happening in hair colour, in India and globally, now is the right time to assess new trends and techniques that will rule the charts in the months to come. To complement the hair colour trends, we bring you a fashion and beauty forecast for Spring/Summer trends, too. In this issue, we also have several international features to keep you on the radar of what’s trending globally. From new product launches to expert tête-à-têtes, there is something to learn and something to engage with on every page.

Dyson Supersonic™ mega launch in India

An experiential by KEvIN.MuRpHy The professional hair care brand, KEVIN.MuRPHy hosted a Pre-Valentines Day Celebration at Vanity Lounge in CR Park, Delhi. The evening was all about experiencing KEVIN.MuRPHy’s versatile range of products. Since I was keen to have voluminous hair, the brand’s technical head Pooja Singh recommended a customised treatment based on my hair needs and texture. The process began with a detox shampoo to get rid of greasy locks and finished with deep conditioning for a moisture kick! The look was topped off with the high-volume blowout. Results: Achieving a voluminous blowout on fine hair is quite a challenge, however, the team managed to create the bouncy look that I was looking forward to. — By Isha Gakhar 26  Beauty Launchpad India | 02.18

Pump up the Volume

Here’s a peek into Isha Gakhar’s mane makeover by rising hairstylist Kartik Gopinath.

I

’ve known Kartik since his initial days as a hairstylist; having first met him at an interview done couple of years ago. He was then an up-andcoming stylist with colossal capabilities to step up the benchmark. He owes his success to his mother — Gita Gopinath, who is an established entrepreneur in the hairdressing and beauty business. The director of Faridabad-based Sundri salon chain, Gita brings 30 years of industry experience to the table. Been motivated by his mother, Kartik followed her footsteps in every way. He entered into the hairdressing field with a dream to take the brand a notch higher. The mother-son duo have been aggressively working towards expanding their current repertoire; their recent move includes setting up a saloncum-cafe in Faridabad, while adding up to their existing two outlets in the city. When Launchpad was invited to check out one of his salon, Kartik suggested a hair makeover for me. As I have fine hair, he recommend having layered locks to add volume. He wanted to get rid of the ends to make them look heavier, and at the same time, also maintain an a-line shape. As the back was relatively shorter than the front, the layers were added subsequently. In terms of techniques, long reversed inverted layers were added to enhance my face shape. As for the colour, balayage and colour melting techniques were incorporated effortlessly, while using L’Oréal Professionnel Majirel Cool Cover (5.8 Light Mocha Brown) on the roots. This was followed by the application of 9.11 shade, which is a blonde and ash tone, on the ends to give it a seamless effect. Hence, the technique used was reverse balayage. The process was combined with Olaplex treatment to restore the texture of my hair and keep the quality intact. While styling the cut, L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Constructor was sprayed on before the blow-dry. The look was sealed by L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART French Froissé to enhance the texture.

28  Beauty Launchpad India | 02.18

Gita Gopinath

Final Thoughts... Why was the look suggested? Well, keeping Isha’s dusky complexion in mind, we chose the colours accordingly...making sure it doesn’t look too loud or over the top... since we wanted to be able to maintain a soft yet a classic and seamless look... the fringe was given to kill the monotony of the long outgrown fringe! — Kartik Gopinath

I walked out the salon happy, but later I realised that this hair cut is a high-maintenance one, as it demands compatible products to accomplish that coveted volume. Moreover, the crown was cut a tad too short in order to elicit more volume. The hair cut and colour is bang on, provided I’m able to blow-dry the layers to salon standards at home.

Forecast: Colour Trends 2018

Hair colour is your ticket to instant stardom. It can glam you up and give you a new avatar. We at Beauty Launchpad have our thumb on the throbbing pulse of hair colour trends. Year 2018 has opened up with a gamut of colour collections and techniques. We present to you an exclusive forecast and references.

38  Beauty Launchpad India | 02.18

“The Colour Melting trend will rule the charts this year. I simply love the way colours blend effortlesslly in this technique. While rainbow colours are a rage globally, in India we will see lot of experimentation with warm tones. Colour melting works with two or more warm colours as well as with warm and cool tones. The way the colours catch light create a stunning effect!” — Asha Hariharan, Founder and Director, Beyond The Fringe Salons and Asha Hariharan Academy

Matrix Professional

G

lobal trends in hair colour indicate a year full of rich luscious shades. Rainbow hair is still trending, but it’s largely the forte of blondes. For brunettes, however, the sky’s the limit. Top most on the trending meter are chocolate browns. Red, a favourite amongst the young tribe, sees hints of spicy cayenne and rusty copper. Reds and browns together make an impressive pair. Case in point is the ‘root beer’ hair colour, which has rich brown with red or auburn highlights. Blondes have another trend working for them – the Blorange. Blonde meets orange to give the millenials a sportier twist to strawberry hair. Even for the ‘play it safe’ Indian girl (or bride-to-be), there are plenty of options to choose from. While your choice of colours might be limited, the techniques that work for you are not. The hairdressing world is currently gushing about the colour melting technique. As block colours and traditional highlights make an exit, the trend space is occupied by colour melting. Colourists across the globe are swearing by this technique, even as celebrities are endorsing it. Simply put, colour melting involves a soft gradation effect wherein the highlights are blended into the base colour seamlessly. The stark contrasts of ombre has given way to the melted effect, which can be created for any colour palette. What’s more colour melting also takes in the colour placement technique of Balayage into play, making it a complete package for fashionistas.

We have worked with the global trend of colour melting technique and made it compatible with dark hair. It’s about how you can make the technique work with the colour palette and have seamless layers of colour mixing into each other. Colour melt is about the transition of colour from dark to medium and finally to lighter tones. It can be used with any colour, but it’s good to use colours from the same family so that you can see the gradient of colour. Reds and burgundys will never go out of our country.” — Melroy Dickson, General Manager – Education, Matrix India 02.18

Colour ColleCtions We tapped into the collections from major colour brands to identify the key trends. Our findings left us amazed at the rich and luscious hues that colourists are dabbling in this season. There is a plethora of options for all kinds of hair types, and yes, a choice range of shades for Indian hair. Here are the looks that you can offer your clients to make them colour trend savvy:

Parisian ChoColat by l’oreal Professionnel The Color Me French look with Parisian Chocolat is endorsed by none other than fashion icon Alexa Chung. For this palette L’Oreal Professionnel looks at deep cocoa hues for inspiration. The Parisian Chocolat collection can be created with five of INOA’s High Resist shades. You can give your customers the option of sporting icy cool or rich luscious brunette looks. The icy hues range from ashy bronze to espresso while the latter ones have warmer tones comprising mahogany browns. Combine the hair colouring with Smartbond, L’Oreal Professionnel’s Bond Reconstructing System.

le beige by Wella Professionals Wella adds cool tones to this season’s trends with its Le Beige collection. “The collection brings an all new contouring service for hair which is a handcrafted hair colour technique that will change the way colorists work to enhance a client’s facial features to create unique personalized results. By enhancing the most beautiful features with the strategic placement of hair colour to complement face shape & incorporated with the Wella True Colour Equation to enhance skin tone and eye colour,” said P K Hariharan, General Manager – India Consumer and Professional Beauty, COTY India. To enhance the colour service, Wella has Wella Professionals added WELLAPLEX with Opti pH System, a strengthening treatment that helps to reconstruct inner hair bonds for stronger hair. With WELLAPLEX, you can offer your clients the entire Le Beige collection. They can choose their pick without worrying about damage.

Colour Melting by Matrix Harnessing the global trend for Indian skin tones and dark hair, Matrix has come up with a customised SoColor palette. Color Melting, The Berry Edition is inspired by decadent berries and rich chocolate, and includes three looks – Caramel Raspberry Melt, Blackberry Melt and Choco Cherry Melt. The melting effect ensures that there is no line of demarcation, making it look completely natural. Whether its loud and vibrant or subtle and soft, color melting is all about combining two or more colors with that flawless melted effect. Melroy Dickson, General Manager – Education, Matrix India, said, “To understand this technique, the colourists first need to come to use for education. Once they know it they will be able to use it easily as it is very salon-friendly. They can work with the existing Matrix palette. However, don’t do it if you haven’t taken training in it with us. We have 40  Beauty Launchpad India | 02.18

workshops and certified courses, which will give them hands-on experience of the technique.”

Global spotliGht Of the many colour trends that are doing the rounds globally, especially amongst celebrities, we are totally hearting a few. Here’s what has made it to our hit list.

ombre oomph After being faithful to ombre for so long, it’s difficult to give up. Well, then don’t! Try the ombre look on a ‘lob’ (long bob) with the colour melting technique.

CoCktail mix Match our ever-favourite chocolate brown with red or auburn highlights. Works on any kind of length and looks beautiful on Indian skin tone.

bold and blonde Bring in wisps of blonde – ash to play it safe, and platinum if you are feeling bold – and watch the transformation. Seamlessly blend warm and cool tones and have fun with colour.

“I predict shine! Anything that gives you shine, anything that leaves your hair looking better than it did before is in vogue. The colour melting technique is trending big. Damaged dry hair is passe. People are always ready to predict the death of a technique. However, I feel no technique ever really dies out. From highlighting, hairdressers discovered baby lights, followed by Balayage. Techniques will be packaged a bit differently in every season, but they will not die out.” — Priscilla Corner, Essensity Ambassador, Schwarzkopf Professional India

Matrix Professional

ConClusion There’s a hair colour out there for every hair type, skin tone, eye colour and lifestyle choice. Help your client discover the right hair colour. Whether she wants to be trendy, stand out in the crowd or be totally outof-the-box, you can help her do it with a hair colour makeover. Let’s make 2018 the year of hair colour and care.

“2018 is a time for just about most colours. A gamut of colours and techniques (apart from old fashioned highlights) are in vogue... from pastel blues, pinks and purples to bright greens, all the way to the other side of the spectrum to deep reds and browns, and soft golds and bright yellows. Personally, I still like to do thin and distant classic weaves but with a newer feel. To add techniques like Balayage or effects like ombré with thinner, spaced out highlights at the roots is presently one of my favourites. Also, to tease the hair and colour is again something I’m doing nowadays.” — Natasha Naegamvala, Director, Nalini of Nalini and Yasmin Salon. 02.18

Colour Education Priscilla Corner, Creative Head of June Tomkyns Eco Salon and brand ambassador of Essensity by Schwarzkopf Professional was in Mumbai for a training session at ASK. Beauty Launchpad gets an exclusive interview with her. — By Kanishka Ramchandani

P

riscilla Corner is one of the leading hairdressers from East India and heads a flourishing place called June Tomkyns Eco Salon in Kolkata. From getting hair education from reputed institutes and hairstylists such as like Vidal Sassoon, Toni and Guy, and Akin Konizi, Priscilla has carved a niche for herself in the Indian hairdressing fraternity. She is looked upon as a seasoned hairdresser, mentor and trainer. She has worked on silverscreen stars such as Kareena Kapoor, Rituparna Sengupta and Raima Sen. Priscilla is also a published poet and a beauty columnist. She was recently in Mumbai in the capacity of the brand ambassador of Essensity Colours by Schwarzkopf Professional. Here’s the excerpt from her interview: What is your profile like as the Essensity ambassador? I felt an affinity towards the brand because it is eco-conscious. I like to call it ‘eco-friendly high-fashion for the hair’. Our aim is to create luxurious hair that looks rich and opulent. To me, shine is synonymous with opulence. Hair that is well-cared for and well-kept deserves our kind of high-fashion. In its natural state, our hair has polymers and keratin that basically make up hair luxury. Given the nature-loving ethos of the brand, we are working with Essensity to create luxurious hair with opulent shine and richness with the use of colour. As a brand, Schwarzkopf puts in a lot of effort in haircare, for instance the lipid technology, and everything works in tandem to support colour. The lipid technology is oil-driven, which again brings in opulent shine and glossy finish to the hair. Even the Fibreplex technology is a good example of the brand’s ethos as it repairs the hair during the colouration. This is what drives the company and this is what drives me. I am constantly endeavouring to see my client out of my salon door with as little hair damage as

possible. The brand’s colour palette and care products reflect this philosophy. And my job as the brand ambassador is to drive home this point. Tell us about the trainings conducted at Schwarzkopf. The Schwarzkopf Academy is an impressive one and its head, Najeeb-Ur-Rehman has a wealth of knowledge. He readily shares his knowledge with hairdressers across India, thereby having a trickle down effect. Anyone affiliated with ASK Academy, therefore, has easy access to in-depth and uniform knowledge. Tips for colourists Work like a chemist! Read the ingredients on the products you use. Get your proportions right for colour. Don’t work with arbitrary measurements. Tips for salons for stocking inventory Keep products that support your colour lines. If you are using colours for high lift, use Fibreplex technology. It’s a brilliant innovation! Stock up on your care products to support your colour. Hair education in India There is definitely a skill gap in our country. The industry is growing at the rate of 20% year-onyear but skilled hands are less. But I see a major change happening in hair education. Beauty market in East India As far as cuts are concerned the customers are very experimentative. It’s a care-driven market. But that is rapidly changing. For colour, the graph is shifting dramatically. People were scared of colour, especially about hair damage. Now that the fear is getting eradicated through education, we can see a tremendous change in the demand for colour. When we work with Essensity, which is care-giving colour, customers understand that they can have trends and superior care at the same time. 02.18

Rapid fiRe Favourite hair colour: Brunette, especially auburn Favourite colouring technique: Free hand Favourite product: Essensity A trend that should end: Garish block colours If not a hairdresser, you would be: There’s no Plan B. This is it! Hairdressing mistakes one should avoid: During a blow-dry never substitute speed with substance. Hairdressers feel if they can blow-dry really fast, they are more competent. Blow-drying is a technique that requires patience. The cuticles need to be delicately handled. Word of advice: Get your basics right! |

Huda Beauty’s exclusive India launch on Nykaa.com Now that the iconic make-up brand has forayed into the Indian market via Nykaa.com, we bring to you the beauty blogging superstar Huda Kattan. In a tête-à-tête with Beauty Launchpad India, Huda discusses her plans and expectations from the Indian market. — By Isha Gakhar PHOTO: NYKAA.COM

Your brand has finally entered India. How do you feel? I am so excited that we’ve launched exclusively on Nykaa.com with our lip portfolio, lashes, eyeshadow palettes, highlighter palettes and #FauxFilter Foundation. We’ve been wanting to expand into the market for a very long time so I am really excited that we are finally available to beauty lovers in India!

What are the products that will work for Indian women? We’ve chosen the products that we know the Indian consumer will love. For instance, the Huda Beauty Desert Dusk Eyeshadow Palette is a definite musthave for getting dramatic and mysterious looks, which are really popular with Indian women. False lashes are a definite must-have! Huda Beauty lashes in Farah #12 are my ride or die lashes for getting a super dramatic look. Our Liquid Matte Heartbreaker is really popular and it’s a shade that complements darker skin tones really well.

As a make-up artist, how have you balanced business and creativity? Luckily for me, much of my business means being creative so I haven’t had to work at balancing it too much. I am very involved with every aspect of the business and am hands on when it comes to defining the company structure, building the team, pricing strategy, content creation, marketing strategy and more. I have a really good grasp on who our audience is so I like to be part of everything, especially when it comes to product development and social media, which allow me to really tap into my creative side.

How does make-up work online? Isn’t it more of a look and feel category? I spend hours on social media every day and I noticed that many indie brands were able to create loads of excitement and hype around a product, and people weren’t willing to wait to buy it in store if there was the potential it might sell-out. They wanted to get their hands on it as quickly as possible. I was exactly one of those consumers who wanted something immediately once I saw it on social media so selling our product online just made sense to

me when we first started the brand. I wanted it to be accessible to everyone, not just those who lived near a store.

Do you plan to launch a professional line as well? We have a lot of goals for Huda Beauty so I will never say never. The team and I have been working so hard on lots of amazing products that will be launching later this year so we’re really focused on perfecting the formulas and creating products that will change the beauty world.

How price-wise is your brand for the Indian market? The prices are in line with every other market we sell in, with prices starting at `1,195 for lashes and our Rose Gold and Desert Dusk palette priced at `4,850. Everything else falls between those price points, with Liquid Mattes priced at `1,650 and #FauxFilter foundation costing `2,990.

What is your biggest expectation from the Indian market? I’m so excited that women in India will be able to try our products for the first time, and I really hope that everyone falls in love with the brand. I put my heart and soul into each and every product so it’s always really nerve-racking when we launch into a new market and reviews begin coming through. 02.18

Beauty / Expert Talk

Healthy is beautiful Luke Coutinho, Integrative & Lifestyle Medicine, Holistic Nutritionist and Founder – Purenutrition.me speaks about holistic lifestyle changes for better health and his views about Biotin Plus. — By Kanishka Ramchandani

Tell us about your work. When I graduated from IHM, my specialisation was food science and nutrition and I have been deeply involved in holistic nutrition ever since. I work with children and adults affected by diet, lifestyle, and disease and help them make ‘shifts’ in their lifestyles so that they can achieve their health goals. I encourage people to use foods along with lifestyle changes to help alleviate medical conditions. I work with several doctors and bio-physicians across Mexico and Cuba, sourcing and developing ‘micro-nutrition’ for cancer and disease to target cancer stem cells and re-build immunity. What kind of problems do Indians face for skin, hair and nails? The most common problems are all rooted in bad eating habits and an ‘urban’ lifestyle, which means long work hours and not enough exercise. In my experience, Indians often suffer from dry and damaged hair, skin blemishes, pigmentation, acne and brittle nails which can be traced to nutritional deficiencies such as iron, vitamin D and B complex. Biotin or vitamin B7 plays a particularly important role in skin, hair, and nail health. All of these problems can be avoided just by increasing the intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Why do you recommend Biotin Plus? In addition to its importance for skin, hair, and nail health, Biotin is also needed for healthy cardiovascular, digestive, metabolic, and nerve functions. I always recommend that people adopt a holistic approach to health and eat a variety of fruits and veggies so that they meet their daily nutritional requirements. However, if you suffer from hair loss or other problems related to biotin deficiency, you can take Biotin Plus as this will ensure that you get the biotin you require. Biotin Plus consists of bamboo shoot extract, emblica officinalis, Calcium Pantothenate, and other ingredients that support skin, hair, and nail cell regeneration. Does Biotin Plus work on alopecia in both men and women? Men and women experience different types of alopecia. Both types of balding are caused by hormonal changes but they are exacerbated by 54  Beauty Launchpad India | 02.18

nutritional deficiencies. When consumed on a regular basis, Biotin Plus can help to reduce hair thinning and improve hair growth. Can it take care of hair that’s damaged by chemical treatments and skin that’s damaged by sun exposure? Biotin Plus contains biotin and several other ingredients that play a central role in healthy metabolism and the creation of important enzymes that ensure skin and hair health. Taking Biotin Plus on a regular basis will help to improve the quality of your hair and skin while enhancing protection against chemical and sun damage. Top five tips for healthy hair, skin and nails. • Feed your hair and skin: Focus on eating healthy, nutritious foods and not just on topical applications. Its an inside-out approach.

LuKe CouTinho

• Never follow a crash diet: Crash diets result in nutritional deficiencies and hormonal imbalance that have a negative impact on your overall health. • Eat foods high in iron and zinc: Iron is required for healthy red blood cells while zinc and vitamin C are necessary for collagen production. • Do not over-train: Your exercise session should not leave you feeling tired but energetic, not fatigued. • Get off anti-depressant and high blood pressure medications: These medications can make you lose hair faster, so use nutritional and lifestyle changes to get off these medications but keep your doctor in the loop.

Top five don’ts for good health: 1. Don’t avoid sunlight 2. Don’t over-consume protein 3. Don’t pop probiotic pills 4. Don’t rush through your meals 5. Don’t gulp down water

On the red carpet Kiehl’s worked with two Hollywood celebrities to give them red-carpet-savvy skin. Here’s the lowdown of the Kiehl’s skincare regime.

K

iehl’s and celebrated Hollywood make-up artist, Kelsey Deenihan, worked together to give Hollywood A-Listers an enviable look for their red carpet appearance. Allison Williams (HBO Show, Girls) and Millie Bobby Brown (Award Winning Show, Stranger Things) attended the 75th Golden Globe Awards, in Los Angeles, California, looking their dapper best.

Allison WilliAms Make-up: Kelsey created a fresh, glowing look with warm tones to complement Allison’s gorgeous dress and stunning statement necklace. Skincare routine: • Kelsey prepped Allison’s skin with Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate followed by Ultra Facial Cream moisturiser to ensure lasting hydration throughout the long evening. • She then used the Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado to the sensitive skin under the eyes for added moisture and to prep the eyes for concealer.

• Having the under eyes sufficiently hydrated will help the concealer stay longer and avoid it from looking too cakey or dry. • To combat unwanted shine and control oil on her T-zone, Kelsey applied Micro-Blur Skin Perfector so there would be no need to touch her up too much throughout the night. • To finish prepping before make-up, Kelsey used Facial Fuel No-Shine Moisturizing Lip Balm on Allison’s lips as the perfect way to moisturise the lips and help lipstick stay on longer.

Millie Bobby Brown

millie BoBBy BroWn Make-up: Kelsey was inspired by Millie’s black Calvin Klein statement dress and created a look that complemented it without distracting from the dress itself. She focused on a look with defined eye and a neutral lip. Skincare: • Kelsey prepped Millie’s skin by beginning with Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate to smooth the skin and ensure lasting hydration throughout the long evening • She then used Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado to the sensitive skin under the eyes.

Allison Williams • Kelsey applied Micro-Blur Skin Perfector on her T-zone. • She prepped her lips with Facial Fuel NoShine Moisturizing Lip Balm. • Kelsey started on her make-up by applying skin caviar concealer from a luxury French skincare brand, and a foundation in warm beige with a damp sponge to the face and décolletage • To not stray too far from Millie’s gorgeous natural rosy lip colour, Kelsey used Butterstick Lip Treatment to hydrate the lips and accentuate her natural beauty.

LAKMÉ SALON’S FREE SPIRITS – COLOUR COCKTAIL COLLECTION It was a look that moved away from the mundane black and white and created a colour spectrum that was a cut and colour above the rest. Lakmé Salon introduced the exciting “Free Spirits - Colour Cocktail” collection created exclusively for the modern Indian woman. The collection allowed women to flaunt their choices as an individual with cuts and colours that catered to women from all walks of life. Whether the lady looked

for delicious and subtle caramel highlights or a luscious and daring mahogany, this collection was the answer to it all. It celebrated the joy of experimenting with modern, exotic and bold looks that were inspired from both global trends and popular cocktails. Expect a palette of vibrant colours and delightful hues that have been teamed with curated and unconventional haircuts. Comprising of 7 colour themes and a total of 14 looks, this spunky collection is inspired from the Tiger eye palate and includes shades of Caramel, Honey, Auburn Brown, Blondes, Orange and more. Additionally, it also showcases mermaid themed pastel balayages designed to let the new-age woman express herself in a way she loves herself the best – beautiful, free and limitless. Dimensional colouring with gradation techniques, North East Show colour melting, and jewel tone By Donald Simrock highlights inspired from galaxy colours are the key innovations being showcased this season. Explaining the collection further, Heena Dalvi, National Creative Director – Hair, Lakmé Salon stated, “Hair colouring has taken the fashion world by storm but with newer techniques and increasing colours, it is important to ensure that your hair embodies your spirit. Inspired by the free-spirited woman, our carefully crafted “Free Spirits Colour Cocktail” collection will let you explore infinite colour possibilities that reflect your personality. From gradients of caramel and jewel tone highlights to pastel Balayages, this collection is enhanced with styles like boho curls, halo braids, crimped roots and more.” Adding to the conversation, Khan says, “This season, we are focusing on reinventing nudes. It is all about radiant, freshfaced makeup with nothing Urvashi Kaur to hide and everything to

show off. Blushed, barely-there nude face complements the vibrant, bold hair along with a colour palette of olives, ochrés, caramels and chocolate browns.”

LOOKS BY DONALD SIMROCK VINEET RAHUL The look was a rather unique way of getting the “flushed cheek.” It was a classic look more naturally sun kissed by adding colour and freckles to the cheeks and nose.

Anaam

TARUN TAHILIANI The models sported a super holographic look of a warm face with a lot of reflection on the skin, above the brows and through the skin to create a holographic reflective tone and ended with a line across the face. The sleek pinned hair enhanced the look further. THE LABEL RITU KUMAR The inspiration was the urban mermaid with blue eye shadow, while the eye lashes had a dewy look. Defined eyebrows and a pop of colour on the eyes created using the Lakmé Absolute Nude Eye shadow palette, was the highlight of the look. HEMANG AGRAWAL The look was simple for this show with a super fresh face and a focus on skincare and grooming the face beautifully. RAJESH PRATAP SINGH The colour wash on the eyes was the focal point in this look. The face was otherwise kept fresh and very nude and that is why the colour on the eyes stood out. A slight coronation tone on the lips was achieved by using the new Lakmé Absolute Argan Oil lip colours. NORTH EAST SHOW It was a fresh skin and dewy look with different takes on the eyes. The classic beadwork with red, black and white under the eye was interesting meant to be regal but 1700’s regal created with Lakmé Eyeconic white and red lipstick. The eye makeup with a hint of colour in the corners of the eyes was a reference to modern art, while a focus on classic tyre work, added a depth to the eye. Another stand out look was a classic gold and white-eye make-up with an almost cashmere effect. 6DEGREE STUDIO BY Sushma Khan, National Creative Director - Make-up, Lakmé Salon and Heena Dalvi, National Creative Director – Hair, Lakmé Salon

Beauty / Salon Review

T

he colour scheme of beige and soft white gives VLCC Day Spa a soothing ambience. Located in Vasant Vihar, the spa is an ideal place to re-energise busy city body. I was welcomed by the spa manager who guided me through the services they offer. She also recommend what I could experience. As I have been a proponent of nail extensions, I opted for a gel mani with a short base. The nail technician took approximately an hour to put the extensions in place. OPI products were used to create the nails, topped off with Colorista Soak Off Bonding Glossing Gel nail paint in oxblood shade. The nails came in a short, square shape with a polished finish. In my case, the nail paint didn’t chip or fade, however, the refill was the need of the hour within two weeks of the manicure session. The salon additionally recommended an experience of their recently launched Zodiacbased facials, which claims to contain the ‘bhasm’ of birthstones relevant to your sun sign. Based on my zodiac sign, I was given Peridot (Leo) facial, that claimed to give a tonic effect on the skin. The five-step facial is spread across an hour and concludes with a relaxing foot massage to boost circulation and reduce stress. Post facial, I could see the visible hydration and freshness on my face. The facial is decently priced and again in my case, the result lasted up to 15 days.

Cosmoprof gears up for its IndIa edition

The king of professional beauty expos is all set to make its much-awaited India debut! UBM India and Bologna Fiere will launch Cosmoprof India Preview in September, followed by the main event next year.

S

ahara Star Hotel, Mumbai, will play host to the highly-anticipated collaboration between Bologna Fiere, one of the leading International exhibition organiser, and UBM India, India’s leading B2B exhibitions organiser. The collaboration is the Cosmoprof India Preview, which is a new event for the International beauty community. It will be held on 10th and 11th of September, 2018. Cosmoprof India Preview will provide a platform for brands of finished products, especially for cosmetics and toiletries, 62  Beauty Launchpad India | 02.18

beauty salon, hair, nail and accessories, and for the supply chain contenders, which would include raw materials and ingredients, contract manufacturing and private labels, applicators, primary and secondary packaging. The participating brands will get to interact with relevant visitors, network and grow their businesses.

The IndIa focus Cosmoprof conducts its signature shows in Bologna, Las Vegas and Hong Kong, garnering the presence of over 360,000

professionals and 9,000 companies from across the world. It’s steady focus on the Indian beauty market is backed by the 60 per cent increase in consumption over the last five years and a constantly increasing overall value of the beauty sector here. The market in India is expected to reach a target 20 billion dollars by 2025. Cosmoprof India Preview will provide a reference point to the beauty industry. Apart from the main exhibition, the preview will include Cosmotalks, a series of seminars focusing on key issues of the beauty sector

by renowned industry players and experts along with the International Buyer Program, which will facilitate B2B meetings between companies, distributors, buyers, importers and suppliers from India, United Arab Emirates and South East Asia. Yogesh Mudras, Managing Director, UBM India said, “Currently, the market share for the Indian cosmetics industry stands at $ 4.6 billion out of the global $274 billion. The rising awareness of beauty products, increasing premium on personal grooming, changes in consumption patterns and lifestyles and improved purchasing power of women promises exciting times for the industry. It’s no wonder that the beauty industry is looking towards a market value that is estimated to treble in size by 2025. In India, the industry is growing rapidly at a rate of 13-18 percent, much more than that of US or European markets. The Cosmoprof brand will bring immense value to beauty and cosmetics professionals in India to reap the benefits of the advantageous market in a structured manner.”

We are bringing forth the combined strength of uBM and cosmoprof to India. We will be focused on salon, spa, nails, haircare sectors etc. to begin with. Moreover, If I get into the price undercutting game, I will never be able to deliver a show of the same standard as cosmoprof. The rates will however not be exorbitant either but very much acceptable by the Indian market. The preview in september will sample all segments of the cosmetic industry - a platter of starters you may say. — Rahul Deshpande, Group Director, UBM INDIA

In an exclusive interaction with Beauty Launchpad’s editor Ritoo Jhha, Mattia Miglio, International Marketing Manager, Bolognafiere COSMOPROF talks about the plans down the line... So Cosmoprof India in September 2018, what are we looking at? At the prelude in September we expect about 70 exhibitors and 3000 visitors representing each category and then we will have the big one in 2019. Will it compete with Cosmoprof Asia? Bologna & Hong Kong are the fastest growing shows and this year we have reached 2800 exhibitors in Cosmoprof Asia. We have top speakers from respective fields at the Bologna show. Beauty market all over the world is growing at a fast pace and we have demands from various exhibitors for shows that can help them reach out to different markets. I don’t see therefore any kind of competition between Hong Kong and Mumbai. The business in Indian market is growing too and therefore we definitely need a show here. Some of the exhibitors are looking at setting up factories in India and we know of design agencies who are opening offices in Mumbai. So we need to give them a platform. Moreover, each of the Cosmoprofs - Bologna, US, or Asia has its own characteristics and we will like to have an Indian one now that will be catering to typically Indian demands. We essentially want to replicate our regular format so we will have representation in all catagories-ingredients, in contract manufacuring, and in finished products where hair, nail and skincare will be represented. And how will it be different from the cluster of other competing events in the Indian market? We will stress upon the fact that Cosmoprof India Show is a B2B show — its not a consumer show. We are inviting speakers who will show how the international trends can be implemented in the Indian market. How the different interest groups in the industry can make money. How the organic and halal trends can be incorporated etc. Essentially, alongside the exhibition, we will bring the format of Cosmo Talks to India to inspire and connect. We believe that we can take the Indian beauty industry to the next level. Would you have other editions in different cities? We start in Mumbai and depending upon the response and how we will then figure out the way forward. Business / Brand Story

Nature inspired beauty In conversation with Shubhika Jain, Co-Founder, RAS Luxury Oils. — By Kanishka Ramchandani

Inspiration behind RAS...

The USP of RAS...

I completed my graduation in Economics Honors from Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi. My mother Sangeeta Jain, the cofounder and inspiration behind the ideals of the brand, created her own beauty concoctions with handpicked flowers, herbs and other natural ingredients. This practice is what first inspired me to inculcate a natural beauty regimen of using natural, potent face and body oils. My family has been into essential oil and cold-pressed oil extraction business for five years now. We have our own lab – Aditya Biotech Lab and Research Pvt. Ltd. which was established in 1996. I decided to establish my own retail brand.

Ours is a completely vertically integrated process. The cultivation, oil extraction, formulation, bottling, packaging, shipping and marketing is all done in-house. It’s our endeavour to give you the best quality products in the world, for us that means doing it all by ourselves. Small batch sizes results in fresh products with more potency. Our products have 100% natural, pure and potent ingredients, without a drop of synthetic chemicals. The ingredients are Wild Crafted Raw materials grown in our family estate or ethically sourced (Fair Trade) from farmers across the globe. We use organic essential oils and cold-pressedvirgin oils to give you the best therapeutic grade oils. All our products are vegan, cruelty-free, preservative-free, free of synthetic fragrances and additives, free of alcohol, wax free, silicon and paraben-free. Moreover, we give 10% of our profits to Animal Welfare and Girl Child empowerment NGOs.

Your views of the Indian wellness industry... The segment of natural beauty now is not just a movement or campaign led by hardcore, health-conscious people, it is a high-performance, high-growth sector and is here to stay. Along with being concerned about what they’re eating, people are also increasingly becoming aware of what they put into the skin and the adverse effects of harsh chemical based products. 70  Beauty Launchpad India | 02.18

RAS product range... The price range starts from `400 for few essential oils and goes up to `5000. We have handcrafted, pure and organic ,

chemical-free, sulphates-free, parabens-free, pthalates-free skincare profucts for skincare and wellness. Face Elixirs, Face and Body Spritz, Liquid Luxury Oils for Body and Hair, Himalayan Salt Polish, Brown cane sugar Dolce Polish and Pure Essential Oils and Cold Pressed Pure Plant Oils.

Expansion and marketing plans... We are creating a completely new and different segment in the Indian natural Beauty and Wellness space. We are appealing to a small segment of niche people and satisfying their individualistic tastes, distributing and marketing via selective 5-star hotels, salons and boutiques. Some of our retail partners include St. Regis, Four Seasons, Grand Hyatt and Christiaan Georgio Salon in Mumbai, Park Hyatt Hyderabad, Samta & Shruti Studio Hyderabad, Mirrors and Within Salon in UB City, Shangri-La in Bengaluru and popular online portals like Nykaa and Amazon plus our own e-commerce website rasluxuryoils.com. We are shipping worldwide online via our own website. We have expanded to Hong Kong and Dubai and will be working towards establishing our presence in offline and online channels there as well.
