Dear Friends
MEDIA & EvEnTs
The Health and Family Welfare Ministry has proposed the draft amendment to the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements Act, 1954), with a stringent punishment of a jail term of up to five years and a fine of up to `50 lakh for advertisements for magic remedies and drugs promoting fair skin, premature ageing and greying of hair among others — the three aspects that are top of mind in our business. The fact is that in the professional salon business we are always talking of anti-ageing and skin brightening. We, as an industry do need to tread carefully and not give in to the whims and fancies of the customer. The salon professionals with their experience and education are in the best position to give informed advice to the customer. Beauty & wellness increasingly go hand in hand. This is another beautiful issue where we practically get you the best of the industry, first hand — the talented Caroline Lannuzel, whose tirelessly backed the education efforts at L’Oréal’s Professionnel Products Division and has been active in helping salons identify their USP and work towards building the hair fashion collections. We have identified the Young Turks whose dynamic vision will define the future growth of the industry — an going churning that will thrust the industry forward and our education series adds Lucknow’s brilliant Shantanu Shukla and his unmitigated efforts at providing holistic beauty & wellness education in the City of the Nabobs. L’Oréal Professionnel’s Majirel recently underwent a massive image revamp with new packaging and presentation styles that truly bring out the essence of the brand. However, technology, shades, and colour code of the hair colouring product remained the same. Beauty Launchpad was invited to experience this exciting new change at the L’Oréal Professionnel Academy in New Delhi. Isha Gakhar had all the fun, in getting her hair a brand new L’Oréal Majirel look. Trying out the Style My Hair Pro app made this quite the day to remember and she settled on a fiery colour for a Balayage finish. The process began with a ‘Before’ picture of her hair colour, followed by a detailed discussion with the team on hair history and colouring habits. Due to frequent hair colouring sessions, Isha’s hair was dry and frizzy — transforming it into a completely different colour was next to impossible. The team suggested sticking with the red colour family that her hair was already in, rather than pre-lighting and changing the colour tone which could damage the hair further. As she was keen on highlights, the experts suggested a red balayage. The transformation was executed by Lucky Sambi and Ranjan Kumar Roy of Hair Masters Luxury Salon - Rajinder Nagar, mentored by Sonam Passi from the LP Technical Team. The colouring process was combined with a SMARTBOND, as Isha colours her hair often. Red colour is expected to bleed after a few washes, and so, it is advised to use the right shampoo and conditioner to retain the vibrancy. *These views are personal of the author. Top 5 Hair Colouring Techniques to Try in 2020 Everyone loves looking good — it shouldn’t be difficult to commit to a new hairstyle. This decade begins with a new definition of beauty — ‘Bold’. Time to try something new and step out of the comfort zones. So, instead of the usual ‘just a trim’, step into the salons and introduce your hair to hair colour! And, here are five hair colour techniques that you should know about: Balayage: Right at the top of our list is the free-hand hair colouring technique that gives you a natural finish. No wonder it is the current favourite across age groups. While it may sound simple, this is a salon service you would want an experienced hairdresser to take charge of, as it is quite artistic as much as it is technical. Highlights: If you like to keep up with trends but don’t want to over-indulge, try the tried-and-tested highlights that never seem to go out of fashion. Also, it is the ideal hair colouring technique to enhance your natural hair colour and make it look fuller. Lowlights: While highlights involve lightening a few strands of hair, lowlights is all about using a darker tone on a few strands of your hair. Baby Lights (Baby Blond Lights): This delicate, white-blond highlights created using a fine colour technique to mimic a blond hue, works well on all hair colours and types. Ombré: Ombré, as you might already know from make-up and fashion, is blending one hue into another – usually lighter tints into darker tones. It is usually darker at the roots and then, gradually gets lighter from the mid-shaft to the ends. — Report by Sushmita Mathur

or many of us, our hair is our crowning glory, a matter of pride. It is as much a result of genes and tradition as it is of painstaking love and care. However, despite the dedication to our locks, we all dread the occasional bad hair day. Over 45% of Indian women experience a bad hair day every week! When asked what this looks like, the most common responses include hair being dry and rough. Did you know that dry hair means your hair is undernourished? It may look dull, feel rough or lose shine! French Fashion Indian Innovation Meets
Caroline Lannuzel, Artistic Consultant at L’Oréal Professionnel India, is excited to be a part of the big evolution of Indian Hairdressing. Speaking to Isha Gakhar, the French artist who has made India her home, tells Beauty Launchpad all about her creative endeavours and more.
How has been your artistic journey with L’Oréal Professionnel? My journey with L’Oréal Professionnel began at their hair academy. As an artist, it is my dream team. Time simply flies and I have done a lot with L’Oréal. Now, I can’t wait for what’s next.
What do you think of the evolution of hairdressing as a profession in India? It has been great. Earlier, it was complicated as we hardly had any face in the country. But now, because of L’Oréal, hairdressing has opened up with more and more people keen to take it up as a profession. With new academies being opened, there are more training opportunities available in the country. But I still feel that we can push it a little further because I do come across young people who are still struggling to become a hairdresser as their families aren’t completely supportive.
You have been a great support at the L’Oréal Colour Trophy as well as the academy, and in helping salons create their collections. What is your inspiration behind it? I love to help hairdressers dream. It is essential to push them to try something different and not just the kind of work we do in the salons for clients. There is a lot of scope for experimentation in hairdressing and you can do as much as your passion for this art. Styling is my thing, but then I want to push myself to do more. I really want to create more collections for salons; very few do it. We should encourage and support more salons to create their own collections as it gives clarity on their identity and image. It also helps clients choose the right salon for themselves.
28 Beauty Launchpad India | 02.20
Any tips to salons on why it is important to have their own collection?
Now, we would like to know a bit about you — what brought you to the hairdressing space?
It is important to have your own collection because it gives your salon a clear identity based on the kind of work you do. For example, when you go to a Toni&Guy salon, you know exactly what you are going for because their collection automatically gives you an idea. The same thing applies to other salons — they can build their own image and identity through a collection.
For me, it was essential that I meet people on the job; I needed to have that connection. Through hairdressing, I wanted to express fashion and that is what really brought me to this field. I was about 17 years old when I started hairdressing, in France. It is very different than India — I have gone through years of training that helped me observe a lot. I think observation is the key in this industry.
Could you take us through the process of creating a collection?

And for that, we have to look beyond cutting and colouring not happy, that means I need to change something. It is all about to skin tone, make-up, face shapes, clothing preferences, lifestyle understanding yourself and that is what I have learnt here in India. and more. At the end of the day, the most important thing is to be happy and not to have everything or be something. What are your suggestions to improve the education standards in the India hairdressing space? We should not forget that hairdressing is an art and you need to have a certain feel for it. In India, we make it more technical and sometimes forget the artistic part. The visual is more important. Techniques are needed to get you to do what you want to do but at the end of the day, you have to have a good visual sense also.
What are your thoughts on trends — cut, colour, styling? For a very long time, Indian women thought that they could never go blond. And now suddenly, everybody wants to go blond and that is nice.
You mentioned reading. What kind of books do you read? Do you have any other hobbies? I read everything, especially books by French authors, but I love philosophy. Michel Foucault, a french philosopher, is my favourite. Music is also important and I can meditate while listening to music. It inspires me a lot and I feel a lot of joy while listening to music. I like jazz, though I listen to all genres.

SPECIAL FEATURE
DR JAISHREE SHARAD Cosmetic Dermatologist / Author
2020 Goals: My aim is to bring the essence of skincare/hygiene to Mumbai slums and rural areas. Train more dermatologists in aesthetic dermatology. There are so many unqualified people in the beauty business whose claim to fame is huge sponsorships at popular beauty pageants and events, thus overshadowing qualified dermatologists. I also aim to bring awareness among people that a little skin care/therapy can help in being confident. Feminism to me: Means being accepted the way I am, without being judged or ridiculed upon. It means being successful in whatever I do. It means to be happy in my own space and do what I am passionate about. It means working and earning credibility and respect for who I am and having my own identity. It means not being in the shadow of anyone ever.
Dr Jaishree Sharad, India’s leading celebrity cosmetic dermatologist since the last two decades, is the founder and medical director at Skinfiniti Aesthetic Skin and Laser Clinic in Mumbai. The multi-award winning author of several books such as ‘Skin Rules’, was voted as one of the ‘50 Outstanding Women in Health Care’ at the World Health Congress Annual Awards in 2017. She has also won numerous beauty awards and is on the board of directors at International Society of Dermatologic and Aesthetic Surgery.
Cult produCts: Cleanse with Creme Lavante face wash by Uriage, hydrate with Sesderma C-VIT moisturising cream and Fotoprotector fusion water sunscreen by ISDIN. At bedtime, ISDIN Miceller water make-up removal lotion, Obagi professional C-serum on face/neck, and Filorga time-filler cream - a collagen booster with anti-ageing benefits, and Sesderma K-VIT under-eye serum.
How do you perceive beauty for women in 2020? Beauty is about loving ourselves the way we are. Beauty in 2020 would be drifting towards more natural features, being confident in our own skin and with our unaltered features. Beauty does not have to be the perfect features, hair or skin colour or defined by social media and others, but a reflection of our soul. Minimalistic treatments such as non surgical skin tightening, collagen booster injections, anti-ageing creams, fillers to lift your face etc. would be the trend, rather than trying to have pillow faces, duck lips or tightly pulled faces and ape the celebrities/stars. 46 Beauty Launchpad India | 02.20

Women Three women achievers from diverse professional spaces share their thoughts on beauty, feminism, and more. — By Meher Castelino
Feminism to me: I loudly say I am a Feminist. Right from the practise of Sati, to the rape on women these days, I strongly feel the need for women empowerment. I am a rebel who doesn’t care what men think, and live my desired life, but not all the women have the courage to do so. I want women to have more rights, social stature, and the freedom of justice and independence. Cult produCts: I am a complete brand freak. I love brands that care about their clients and reach out to them. I love Dior for my skin and use the Dior Forever skin compact everyday, which has SPF20. This protects my skin from pigmentation and makes me look fresh everyday. Also, love the Dior Lip Plumping Gloss.
How do you perceive beauty for a woman in 2020? Beauty for me is skin deep. I am fond of presentable smart bodies than beautiful faces. I could be beautiful and not fit that doesn’t go with my identity. I prefer being less fair, but more attractive in my style and my body.A fit, smart, and worked-out body inspires people to be in their company. 2020 for me is smart, fit and classy.Women should flaunt their curves with grace.
INDRA JADWANI International Jewellery Designer Indra Jadwani’s 2 decades’ experience as a top, niche, jewellery designer has seen her creations launched on the global platform in cities like Las Vegas, Dubai, Bangkok, Hong Kong and many more. SPECIAL FEATURE
2020 Goals: There is a significant increase in demand for Banarasi amongst all age groups. I want to educate them about the character of ‘pure handloom’ vs ‘powerloom’ and ‘pure silk’ vs ‘silk blends’ flooding the markets and baffling customers. I would like to educate the wearer the minutiae of a ‘handweave’ and the degree of skill that embodies the native craft and establish it at an international level. Feminism to me: Feminism, to me, is a responsibility like no other. I see a woman as the bearer of life. I see her as the focal point of mankind. I see her as the creator and the giver. I see her as the force of balance. I see her as an epitome of strength. We need to push for greater change in society, and champion women and diverse voices on our cultural landscape. I stand for equal opportunities, freedom of choice, and liberation. Cult produCts: I am drawn to natural, traditional and home-grown products. My weekly ritual includes Forest Essentials and Aarohi for hair and skin. I am loyal to Jo Malone’s Lime Basil, Mandarin body wash, L’Occitane’s Almond Shower Scrub and Oil. I must have my Dior eyeliner and lipsticks.
SAGRIKA RAI Founder & Creative Director Warp ‘N Weft Born in Banaras, Sagrika Rai, Founder & Creative Director of Warp‘n Weft, Mumbai, spent her childhood romancing weaves. She has been recognised for her efforts in the conservation and promotion of the heritage textile of Banaras and providing employment to the weavers for over two decades.
How do you perceive beauty for a woman in 2020? Someone I’d define as beautiful reflects my values, which is why beauty is personal; it’s also universal. Beauty to me is also very much about inclusivity. The idea of beauty has shifted dramatically with the billion-dollar beauty business, technology, digital media, and fashion playing crucial roles. Natural looks and skin care routines started becoming popular in 2019. Today, diversity and inclusivity are key topics on beauty; we are embracing the change and that has opened up our minds and hearts. 48 Beauty Launchpad India | 02.20

Building a
Pan-Indian Brand
27 states and 86 cities across India in three years — KT Professional, from the stables of Ccigmaa Lifestyle, is charging across the country and building its presence in every corner.
T
he 50 year legacy of Ccigmaa Lifestyle is dedicated to manufacturing and exporting hair care products and tools to 75 countries across the globe. Three years ago, the award-winning company ventured into the salon space with KT Professional, offering innovative hair care products and services such as the latest ‘Hair Botox’. The rapid growth of this promising brand across the country with a short span of time is a commendable feat few others can pull off. Beauty Launchpad spoke to Dhruv Sayani, Director @ Ccigmaa Lifestyle about the brand’s pan-Indian journey so far and the next steps in business.
Which areas of the country do you cover and what are your plans to reach out to the target market? KT Professional is just about three years old and we are currently present across 27 states and 8500 salons in India. Our business is spread in 86 cities in the country, predominantly in the western region as we are headquartered in Mumbai. We are well placed in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Central India. However, we treat all markets with an equal level of interest — be it East, South, or North. I am happy to share with you that we have an investment of staff even in a city like Jammu, where not many venture due to the political climate.
In the South, the market mostly favours skin than hair. As you are mainly in the business of hair care products and tools, what is the strategy for such challenges? Yes, skincare is the dominant market in South India. This is because comparatively, skincare companies have taken more efforts in reaching out to the consumers in this region and starting conversations. At least 25 international brands and over 47 Indian companies have a strong presence in the skincare market in the south. As for the hair segment, there aren’t enough brands servicing this zone — even for hair smoothening or straightening when in fact, frizzy hair and curl management is a major haircare concern in the region. We see a major gap here in addressing the consumers’ need for services that help manage unruly hair. Keeping these factors in mind, KT Professional has introduced a variety of products and services that cater to salons, such as Keratin, Cysteine, smoothening, straightening, hair protein, hair botox, hair spas, oils, shampoo and conditioner, etc. 56 Beauty Launchpad India | 02.20
INNOVATION KT Professional recently introduced Hair Botox. It’s called ‘Fibre Botox Treatment’ and is a 2-in-1 service that combines the benefits of both plex and protein services. It is an add-on service for salons — for example when a client has thinning hair, they wouldn’t opt for a straightening service. So, what can we do to increase their quality? This is the opportunity we identified and tested the product for a year. And, I am happy to share that within two months of its launch, we have received phenomenal response for the Fibre Botox treatment.
KT Professional is present in 8500 salons across India. What salon category are you focused on and what is their scale? Our range of products goes all the way from A-plus to C-plus and we have different price points. So, we cater across all categories of salons. Even our shampoo & conditioner ranges and treatments come in two or three variants to cater to all types of salons — be it corporate, stand-alone or salon chains.
As you have a strong presence in the Western region, would you like to share more about your salon associations there? We have been working across various salons in the West. Our Cysteine Plus Treatment is doing very well at LOOKS Salon. Some of our services are provided at salons like Jawed Habib and Kromakay, to name a few. Our protein service is being offered by Affinity Salons as well. Besides these, we also work with standalone salons as I believe, these days consumers value the quality of services offered than just a brand name. And, that is the focus of our company as well.
as compared to western countries. They have more options and exposure — but, we keep forgetting that we are a country of 1.35 billion people and hair texture changes with every 100 km. While there is the humidity and frizz issue in Mumbai, in Kerala, hair is much more nourished but unruly, and in Punjab, hair is silky and long but high maintenance.
Sustainability is a hot topic across industries these days. What is your take on it? A lot of brands are taking up the initiative. Sustainable packaging is only the first step — in the long-term, awareness is what matters. People are conscious of sustainable practices now and I think, this consciousness is definitely going to define the way forward. At KT Professional, we take sustainability very seriously. In 2020, we will be innovating not only in terms of packaging but also in terms of eco-friendly and sustainable products.
What challenges do you see for hair services, particularly? Earlier, hair services were all about straightening. Then, it shifted to Smoothening, Keratin, Protein, and so on. Innovation is the key to moving forward. India is still very raw as a market,

EmpowEring Through EducaTion Education will continue to be the deal breaker for the salon industry in India in 2020. Whether chain salons or standalones, Tier I or II, the level of professional education of people will differentiate one brand from the other.

having practical knowledge is important but salon management is equally important for efficiently running a salon and effectively handling petty issues.
What’s your opinion of the academic scenario? What’s your contribution to industry skilling?
I
n our endeavour to understand various viewpoints on the topic, from every corner of the nation, Beauty Launchpad’s Education Special Series presents an insightful conversation with Shantanu Shukla - Chief Innovator & Mentor at Koffeure Training Academy, Lucknow.
What are your suggestions to improve the educational scenario in the Indian salon & beauty industry? In the last couple years, there has been a great shift in the Indian Salon & Beauty Industry; we are moving towards being a more organised sector that is rapidly expanding with a tremendous customer base growing at a rate of 15-20%, every year. To take up this opportunity, we need to have strong support from our education system, as manpower is a driving force of this industry. Now, there is a huge gap between the demand and supply of manpower. Well-qualified educators are a priority, as enhancing skill sets is a major aspiration for those looking to make a career in hair & beauty. The demand for short-term training programs is high, as the future prospects are endless. 60 Beauty Launchpad India | 02.20
Salon/ Spa Management is an essential aspect of any professional education. How much do you as an academy invest in teaching this subject? We have made Salon Management the base for all professional courses offered at our Academy. Other basic modules like Nutrition, English Speaking, Personality Development, Personal Grooming, etc. are also incorporated for the overall upgradation and enhancement of the student, on both personal and professional fronts. We frequently conduct group discussions and role-plays for the students to be well-versed with the challenges they might face as a salon professional or entrepreneur. We strongly believe that

Several programs are being run or introduced by the government of India, at both national and state levels. The focus is on skill-based programs for the youth to be self-dependent and employed. Vocational training programs offer exit options and are quite flexible as well as efficient. Moreover, they stress on practical training, skill development, and employability of the candidates. There is a lot of demand for short-term learning programmes that help students to find employment or be entrepreneurs in a short span of time. We have professional courses within duration ranging from three months to one year. We provide internships to our students at our service centres to make them industryready by boosting their confidence and bringing them at par with others. We also encourage young mothers to pursue their dreams and be entrepreneurs.
What are the certifications offered by your academy? We are the only CIBTAC-certified academy in Uttar Pradesh. CIBTAC qualifications are recognized in over 25 countries worldwide.
How about advanced education and updating skills? We have a wide range of courses to choose from and with the help of our highly experienced faculty, we keep on upgrading our syllabus from time to time. We organise various workshops for our students, to keep them updated of industry trends. We also conduct interactive sessions with industry professionals through seminars and pep talks at the academy.
