Dear Reader

Meher Castelino

The International SPA Association (ISPA) has released its annual findings of five key spa industry financial indicators for the market in USA. Compiled by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the initial report is known as the ‘Big Five’, comprising total revenue, spa visits, spa locations, revenue per visit and number of employees for the United States spa industry. While there has been a steady increase in percentages in all these categories, the revenue growth for the US spa industry exceeded $17 billion in 2017. The reason I bring this staggering figure to you is to impress upon you the vastness of the spa industry. The Indian wellness market might still have many unorganised elements, but if the US market is any indication, the sky’s the limit for us. Imagine the possibilities of growth in a country of 1 billion people and home-grown wellness concepts like Ayurveda and Yoga! As per the latest study by Reportsnreports, the current global medical aesthetic industry is worth $53.3 billion for both service and product revenue. Over the next five years a CAGR of 5.5% is expected and the market will hit $73.6 billion in 2022. Beauty Launchpad has always regarded aesthetics as an important part of the beauty business. While the lines of demarcation between salons and aesthetics are strong today, we will be witnessing blurring of boundaries going forward. As with the amalgamation of salon and spa spaces, we will see merging of salon and aesthetics, too. Already beauty salons are trying to incorporate laser technology and other non-invasive treatment in their offerings. To keep a tab on this seismic shift, we are starting a new feature on skin science, this issue onward. We are kickstarting with four of the top dermatologists from New Delhi. Keep your copy of Beauty Launchpad handy for more updates on skincare. In this issue we are also featuring an interview with the Schwarzkopf Professional Global Colour Expert, Lesley Jennison; a break-down of runway looks from India Couture Week; and an interaction with Agnieszka Saintemarie, Industry Manager of Kline’s Consumer Products. There are lot more updates, too, so without much ado, turn the page and read on...

Schwarzkopf’S My SpecialiSt Henkel’s research and development experts have developed My Specialist Hair Analysis. It is a specially generated dryness and damage evaluation system checks the consumer’s hair constitution and displays it on a 1 to 5 scale. To achieve a more profound result, consumers are requested to fill out an additional questionnaire that assists in determining the individual health of the scalp. This is how My Specialist works exactly: Consumers can order the supply on the Schwarzkopf T-Mall page. After the first step is done, a hair envelop is provided by My Specialist, in which consumers can send their own hair samples to the My Specialist lab. Then it is time to start the Hair Analysis. The carefully developed system, which includes advanced microscopy that examines the structures of the hair surfaces, integrates six characterized aspects of hair – focusing on both newly growing parts of the hair and the already aging parts. The following six aspects of hair condition are examined: Cuticle array, cuticle lift-up, cortex exposure, cuticle damage, hair thinning and hair split. Low-, Medium- and High-Levels with clear definitions can be correlated with every single hair condition aspect. The consumers’ Hair Analysis rests upon these six aspects, which are explicitly outlined in the hair report. Schwarzkopf My Specialist was recently launched in China.

Dove has launched the ‘No Digital Distortion Mark’ initiative. The Mark will roll out across all branded content globally beginning in July with deodorant campaigns leading the fray. By January 2, 2019, the mark will be incorporated into all static imagery showcasing women, across print, outdoor, in-store, digital and social media. Dove will be held accountable to only show accurate and genuine portrayals of people, showing them how they are in real life. This initiative is a part of Dove’s the Self-Esteem Project. In another development, the brand conducted a social experiment with a group of young girls, who were invited to select a face for the beauty feature of an international fashion magazine. The film capturing this experiment shows some raw and revealing discussions on what qualifies as beautiful for girls these days. Dove’s campaign draws attention to the fact that beauty stereotypes are rooted so deep in our society, that even girls as young as 10 are unable to escape them.

Extend your Limits With science and experience behind it, Kérastase introduces Resistance Extentioniste. Strengthen your hair and reinforce its beauty with this all-new hair care range.

A

lot of women desire hair that is beautiful, strong and long, and are always looking to pamper themselves with the best available products. In this quest for stronger, longer hair, Kérastase provides the ultimate advantage – Resistance Extentioniste. Kérastase has identified three primary obstacles for long hair – breakage at the roots, weakened fibres making the lengths lifeless and split ends. Resistance Extentioniste is a new hair-training programme, which results in visible strengthening of hair from roots to tips.

24  Beauty Launchpad India | 08.18

Harnessing Hair science Kérastase targeted these obstacles directly and worked on removing the factors that prevent damaged hair from reaching its optimal length. Hair experts at L’Oréal laboratories and Kérastase have introduced:

Creatine R is a powerful fusion of Creatine + Ceramides. While Creatine reinforces the bonds and fibre structure, Ceramides act as a shield, keeping the cuticles smooth and moisture locked in. These key ingredients are ably supported by targeted actives in the new range. Here’s how all the key ingredients work to make Resistance Extentioniste your best option for achieving optimal hair length: Taurine: Improves resistance of the core of the fibre and improves the roots environment. Ceramides: Restores the fibre’s cuticle to protect the fibre as it grows. Creatine: Protects the internal bonds and helps combat the weakening of the fibre. Acid Maleic: Reinforce and seal cuticles with a uniform coating from root to tip. Acid Citric: Provides shine and also holds an amazing power to recover the natural strength of the fibre structure.

In-sAlon ReseT wITh The Bond And FIBRe sTRengThenIng RITuAl The Kérastase experience begins with an in-salon personalised camera diagnosis by a Kérastase ambassador. A customer looking for stronger, longer hair is recommended the Extentioniste Programme. The first step of the programme is the in-salon reset with the Bond and Fibre Strengthening Ritual. It uses a combination of products, application and massage techniques to strengthen, deeply repair and condition hair. It includes the usage of 2 new in-salon exclusive products – Soin 1 and Soin 2. The ritual also includes the use of Serum Extensioniste to activate the scalp and ensure that new hair grows healthy and strong.

creatine rtm is exclusively developed for kérastase resistance extentioniste. this breakthrough technology is combined with active ingredients to work out fiber’s pain points.

The shampoo ensures visibly healthy and stimulated scalp environment, while the conditioner has powerful detangling properties. The length-strengthening Masque has power of homogenity – it seals cuticles and leaves a uniform coating from roots to tips. The Serum Extentioniste activates the scalp and strengthens the hair from the roots.

opti.long nouriSh proteCt profeSSional nouriShing leave-in for long hair Indian women feel that “long hair” is among the top attributes for their definition of beautiful hair. However, most women with long hair do not leave it open as they are afraid of the dust, pollution and humidity that can make it rough on the mid-lengths and tangle up their ends. Thus, using a leavein product after your hair wash regime helps to nourish and protect long tresses and allows women to flaunt their luscious long hair without any worries. The Opti.Long Nourish Protect Professional Nourishing Leave-in cream fortified with Ceramide, is a deep nourishing leave-in cream that also provides strength to the hair fibre and protection from split-end damage**. It helps to resurface hair strands for a smoother finish and nourished feel across the length of hair. Rub a small amount into hands and apply to towel dried hair and style as desired.

Women constantly suffer from frizzy and unmanageable hair caused by environmental factors and the use of styling tools. While straightening and smoothening services have proven to be a boon for frizzy and untamed hair, it is essential to invest in a serum to prolong the results of these services. Opti.Care Smooth Straight serum, enriched with Shea Butter, is perfect for smoothening frizz and flyaways in chemically treated hair. Its light and nongreasy formula tames frizz and helps to maintain the straightened texture of your tresses while leaving them silky smooth. Distribute the serum to the part of the hair that needs it the most — the midlengths and the ends. For better effectiveness, use the hair serum on damp hair, few minutes after the hair wash.

opti.BlaCk Dazzling Shine profeSSional Shine enhanCe Serum for Shiny Dark treSSeS We all dream of dark, shiny, beautiful hair and while aging is inevitable, we all definitely take the effort cover our greys with the help of coloration services. However, after coloration, protecting that color from fading is also very important and must be a part of your regular hair care routine. While colored hair undergoes fading, naturally dark hair also undergoes dullness due to exposure to sunlight, pollution and other environmental factors. The Opti.Black Professional Shine Enhance Serum, enriched with Antioxidant Vitamin E helps give a dose of shine for dull, naturally dark hair. For tresses that have undergone grey coverage coloration with dark shades, the serum helps to impart dazzling shine and also helps protect hair color for up to 24 washes*** if used regularly along with Opti.Black Dazzling Shine Shampoo and Conditioner. Apply a small amount on damp hair to render smoothness and softness while leaving the tresses dazzling with mirror shine.

Hair Drama Company Hair Drama Company and Headmasters Salon collaborate to bring their creative synergies together. — By Monika Malik

O

ne of the country’s biggest commercial battles in the field of fashion will now be fought on a tiny battlefield — the hair salons. For, two of the best and biggest brand names in the fashion world have put their heads together to come out with ‘hair-raising’ idea of offering fashion accessories through salons. Online is fashionable, but offline too is not outdated. No wonder, the Hair Drama Company — a brand specialized in distinctive hair accessories and quality products — and the Headmasters Salon Private Limited with a chain of premium luxury salons in North India have come together to create a head-turner drama with your mane and their accessories, together with their expertise. Blowing away everyone with its intricately-designed quality pieces through the virtual world of e-bazars, the Hair Drama Company is now entering the physical offline world, and is tying up with the hair salons across country to put its products on the market. “Pammy is an ideal choice because the Hair Drama Company’s name gels with her capabilities of creating a dramatic effect through her art,” said Ritoo Jhha, Editor, Beauty Launchpad. Headmasters’ technical director, Pammy is an internationally-acclaimed hair, nails and beauty expert, also recognised as the make-up artist to a number of Bollywood actresses. “I loved working with their products, and I can see so many of them on my brides. It’s so versatile, durable and having great quality,” said Pammy, who insisted to name the princess jewel head chain after her. “I loved it…this is so versatile that it can be worn as a head band, or a bun wrap, even as a belt or neck piece,” Pammy said. From headbands, to head chains, to clips, pins, combs to textile headwear, halos, caps, turban bands to even hair glitters, the Company aims to add a little drama so that its customers can flaunt their locks with élan. But, the salon range is different from the products it is already selling online. “Our salon range is exclusive. There are about 400 pieces on the counter presently, which we will be changing every three months,” said Chunchreek Singhvi of Hair Drama Co. He said, “Many of us are not aware of how to use a product or in what other ways we can use it. And who else is better than the hair salons to put these products to their best use.” Undoubtedly, the real drama is created when the product and the artist are put together. Hair Drama Company offers a premium range of hair accessories including one-of-its-kind 3D printed collection of maang tikkas, marquee head chains and many more. 28  Beauty Launchpad India | 08.18

Working With the natural hair color Now that you know their correct skin tone for this look, it’s time to understand their natural hair color to blend the edgy hues. Depending on how dark their natural color is, you may have to lighten their hair before applying the final burgundy tone so that it will come out bright enough. With darker hair, you can afford to use a heavier permanent colour, as it will leave the hair with a purple glow. If their hair is pale, you will have to darken it a bit before applying the final burgundy tone.

Replenish dull skin with Cheryl’s OxyBlast Breakthrough OxyBlast facial that gives radiance to dull and lifeless skin

A

girl’s beauty can be defined by her sharp features but nothing enhances it more than a luminous and a radiant looking skin. Indians are constantly opting for skin lightening treatments to achieve a bright, radiant look on their face. However, they are unaware of the difference between skin lightening and brightening. Skin lightening treatments help in reducing the level of melanin that causes pigmentation and uneven skin tone. Whereas, brightness is increasing the radiance and glow by stimulating collagen production and restoring vibrancy to the skin. Regardless of the skin tone, our skin will only look radiant when it is smooth enough to reflect light. This radiance in the skin, illuminates a clear glowing complexion that exhibits youthfulness and is devoid of dryness or blemishes. As we start aging, there is a breakdown of collagen and elastin components that causes the dead skin cells to pile up, oxygen levels in the skin to decrease making our skin look dull. This also causes a loss of skin elasticity and ultimately leads to the formation of lines and wrinkles. Other factors like stressful lifestyles, lack of nutritional diet, pollution and harmful sun rays also make our skin thin and more fragile. While all these factors are a part and parcel of our lives, you can prevent such aberrations from further damaging your skin by regaining your skin’s lost vibrancy. Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals, the pioneer in the professional skincare, presents a targeted treatment for restoring your skin’s lustre with Cheryl’s OxyBlast Facial. This facial replenishes lost oxygen and visibly fills up the lines and wrinkles by stimulating cell regeneration. Based on the latest technology, the facial delivers oxygen deep into the skin, which leads to a healthier, supple & hydrated polished skin. Specifically formulated with actives like oxygenating complex and Vitamin A and E, this facial enhances radiance and luminosity with a burst of fresh oxygen on the epidermis. Imparting life to dull and dry skin, OxyBlast facials not only lightens and hydrates the skin, but also reverses the damage caused by the environmental factors, making it the perfect facial for dull and damaged skin. Cheryl’s OxyBlast facial is a breakthrough 7-step process which is crafted and targeted towards long lasting comprehensive results. It starts by using a cleansing gel that helps in reviving the lost Vitamin C and E from the skin. This is followed by deep cleansing using a peel and toning using a skin oxygenator that helps in rebalancing pH in the skin. Once the skin is hydrated, an innovative Oxygen Serum that contains pure oxygen, is used to activate the skin’s cellular metabolism and enhance glow. Post this step, a deep penetrating mask, which is covered with a cling wrap, is applied. This step helps in the deeper penetration of the Oxygen serum and ensures skin stabilization and an increase in blood circulation. The facial ends with a massage using an energizing cream which 38  Beauty Launchpad India | 08.18

is followed by radiance mask that is enriched with Aloe Vera and Canadian Willow Herb to lighten skin. This facial is specially designed for dull and tired skin with an effect that lasts for minimum 20 days. To maintain the results of the professional treatment, continue with proper care at home with Cheryl’s O2C2 Radiance Lotion. It is a multi-benefit product that gives radiance all day long. It reduces the signs of aging & acts as a repair product to protect the damages from the environmental pollution.

Talking about the efficiency of this service, Gunjan Jain, National Education Manager, Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals, commented, “Cheryl’s OxyBlast is an Oxygen Energizing Radiance Facial that gives instant radiance and glow. This is one of our unique facial services that infuses oxygen with the help of a deep penetrating mask that is covered with a cling wrap to help oxygenate the deep tissues of the skin. The infused oxygen in this facial, boosts cellular functioning and helps revitalize mature and dull skin, making it lighter and radiant. We recommend this facial to clients with dull and tired skin that lack nourishment. “

Regenerate your skin’s radiance instantly by availing the OxyBlast Oxygen Energizing Facial at your nearest Cheryl’s salon.

My family was into the cashew business. When I was 4 years old, I met a lot of beautiful women at a function. I could not take my eyes off their lipstick shades. It looked beautiful! Back home I tried applying my mother’s liquid bindi Tell us about the entire Lekshmi menon, Founde on my lips. My mom explained to experience. r of Face Palette me that lipsticks are used for the RSA is a 264 years old society lips, and even bought me one. From whose Patron is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Based in London that day on my love for make-up artistry grew exponentially. and founded in 1754, the RSA was granted a Royal Charter in 1847 and the right to use the term Royal in its name by King Edward VII What led to the creation of Face Palette? in 1908. Today, the RSA has Fellows from 80 countries worldwide I completed my Masters in the UK. I was constantly helping my friends and previous Fellows have included Stephen Hawking, Marie Curie, and women online with make-up and skincare advice. After coming Charles Dickens, Benjamin Franklin and Karl Marx. RSA fellows have back from the UK, I realised that make-up education and industry in made significant contribution over the last three centuries to make India lacked refinement. It needed to have a structure wherein artists are our world a better place. This honour comes with lot of expectations knowledgeable enough and society understands that make-up is an art. and I hope that I will able to use the access, recognition, network Makeovers can truly change lives. This led to the creation of Face Palette and privilege that this fellowship brings to work with women so as to

initially as a Facebook page where women could easily connect with me for guidance. Then I started penning down Makeup Artistry Guidelines on my website. Thereafter I started my classes in Kerala, which have became quite popular with women since I teach make-up artistry as a mixture of art and science. Take us through your Professional Make-up Artistry course. Face Palette’s Exclusive Professional Makeup Artistry course is structured to take an artist through four major aspects of training: a. Theoretical Knowledge b. Practical Training c. Coursework and Analysis d. Examination and Observation Students are taught make-up as a science and how it is formulated, what it does to the skin, how you can mix and match products etc. We train from the most minimal budget but to identify the right formula and work with it accordingly. They are also given guidance on working with high end products and how they can effectively put them to use based on client’s skin. We teach our students how to handle a client right, what etiquettes are required by the profession etc. It is a wholesome experience of two months for them. Our course is internationally accredited and certified. Which trends do you foresee for Autumn/Winter season? For Autumn/Winter season, I see the use of metallic tones such as gold and bronze in make-up including Duo Chromes, Foils, Pigments, Accents and Glitter. Bullet lipsticks have made a huge comeback after liquid

lipsticks dominating the market for a while. Berry and Dark toned sharp lips will be in trend. Burgundy eyeliners and smokey eye using warm tones such as Burgundy, Orange and Browns will be in demand as well. Block eyes and Negative space liners are very much in demand, which will be seen in a lot of runways and editorial shoots. Blue eyeshadow has made a comeback to many artist palettes. The 60’s and 80’s inspired retro make-up routines are making a huge comeback, too. What plans do you have for yourself and Face Palette? At Face Palette, we plan to add more courses, both online and offline, which will be of benefit to the rising beauty sector and make-up enthusiasts in the world. We are also planning to release our own range of beauty products. We also plan to have a franchise network of our studios. As the Creative Head of Face Palette, I wish to train more and more artists and release them to the industry confident about their knowledge and skills. Through Induk Makeup methodology, which I have developed over the years, I would like to help my students to study make-up artistry scientifically, help them to understand a product, experience its textures and formulations and apply them to get the best effect after studying their client skin thoroughly. I strongly believe in the beauty and power of colours. Colours can help a human being release a beautiful emotion that can make them feel good from within. I believe every human, irrespective of age, colour, race, gender has the right to experience this emotion and in the future, I wish to make a lot of people experience it through our MakeoverChangesLife Movement.

Beauty / Global Expert

The Colourist

Schwarzkopf Professional’s Global Colour Amabassador, Lesley Jennison, was in Mumbai for the Essential Looks 2018 show. As one of the minds behind the collection, Lesley had lot to share about her experience. — By Kanishka Ramchandani

What inspired you to get into hairdressing? Growing up, I wanted to do makeup for the BBC. They used to have period dramas. I grew up going to theatre and reading classics, so I loved period dramas. I wrote to BBC asking if I could work with them. They asked me to study history, art and hairdressing. I completed college and then did my hairdressing, so I started a bit late. If I want to do anything, I want to do it the best way. That’s why for hairdressing, I applied at Vidal Sassoon. I got into Sassoon and remained with them for 18 years. I loved every single moment of it! I was the first person in the history of Sassoon to be a part of the art team and a manager at the same time. Then I started to freelance, a difficult task for a colourist. I did it for two years. Then I was invited by Schwarzkopf Professional to work on the branding for its Brilliance line, which had to be relaunched. I did that. It went on to win industry awards. I was then asked to head Essential Looks. What’s unique about EL is that it is inspired by the catwalks and we design looks that are relevant to the hairdresser. How was it working with Vidal Sassoon? It was amazing! The training was fierce. I started my training with 27 other people, and at the end of the three years, there were just two of us left. When did you discover your passion for colour? Within three months of joining Sassoon! As a hairdresser you have so much control on how you can change somebody’s appearance purely through placement of colour. With face framing and colour contouring, you can change the shape of a face. How did you blend in with Schwarzkopf’s philosophy? For me, what works is that Schwarzkopf listens to what a hairdresser wants. Throughout the year, they bring hairdressers from across the world to their head office to discuss what they really want. And the fact that they are constantly reinventing and putting efforts in innovating technology. Some of the technology that’s coming later this year is insanely clever. I am also invovled with the formulation of colours. 48  Beauty Launchpad India | 08.18

Since Schwarzkopf is celebrating 120 years, it’s a special year for us. They asked three colourists, including me, to make six colours. So, we went into the labs, we were allowed to pick the tones. We worked really hard on formulating and testing them, until we found the perfect colours. I wanted to create colours that a hairdresser would be able to use every day in the salon. We even have our names printed on the boxes! Tell us more about Essential Looks. We have five trends. There’s Random Rebels, which is the youngest and strongest of the trends. The colours are very very bright. Then we have Real Me, which has a catwalk version with block colours. For the salon, we have a softer version. Next is Beyond Borders. It’s a celebration of different ethnics coming together. In this we use various techniques, one is forcing the hair to show more movement and another on is adding lighter tones to mid-lengths. Then there’s Dusted Rouge, which is powerful but soft. For the Essential Looks show in India, we added another trend for Indian industry Urban Diva. What do you think of the current hair education? I think in the last 20 years, it has been getting better and better. When I started, people thought if you want to be a hairdresser its because you didn’t know what else to do. But now that’s not the case as you can get higher degree in colour chemistry. Hairdressers can earn great money now. It will go as far as you can take it! What is your opinion of the Indian hairdressers? This team (at ASK Academy) is amazing! It has hairdressers from all over the country. The first thing I noticed when I saw them working was the passion. What advice would you like to give them? Never ever stop learning! Technology changes so rapidly now. For instance, Fibreplex has changed the way hairdressers should think about colouring hair. We can now take the hair from black to blonde with no compromise. The moment you think you don’t need any more education, you stop growing. Always keep an open mind to new technology, new education.

Riding the ‘at-home service’ wave UrbanClap’s Abhiraj Bhal spills the beans on the growth of on-demand market services and it pitfalls.

U

rbanClap is an online marketplace, which helps customers hire local and home services at the push of a button. Abhiraj Bhal leads the company as its Co-founder and CEO. Prior to UrbanClap, Abhiraj was a consultant with The Boston Consulting Group, advising Fortune 500 companies across India, Germany and South East Asia. He holds a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur, and an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. Abhiraj is a part of various government committees, including the Domestic Workers Sector Skill Council, and the Champions of Change program. As UrbanClap’s CEO, he also works closely with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the Ministry of Skill Development and NSDC. In an exclusive conversation with Beauty Launchpad’s Isha Gakhar, Abhiraj talks about the building of UrbanClap and the curve ahead. How has your journey been? What goes into aggregating all kind of services online? UrbanClap was started 3.5 years back with the vision to organise the local services market in India. The idea was to create a large tech business which solves a primary customer need. The local services industry is very fragmented and unorganized. When we started UrbanClap, hiring a plumber, beautician, yoga trainer, math tutor etc. was a painful process. There were no standards, no concept of trust, pricing inefficiencies, and the industry was shackled in the ‘yellow pages’ era. We saw this as a large opportunity. By leveraging technology, and a set of simple yet powerful processes, we have been able to build a fairly disruptive platform which is now the default way to hire these services in India. What are the pitfalls? Some of the major challenges in a hyperlocal market are optimum resource utilisation and matching locations, price points, and other specific requirements to the customers’ needs. We are leveraging technology to the maximum to solve these challenges — our matchmaking algorithm operates such that it matches customers’ needs with professionals who can deliver these. Once a customer places a request on the platform, this request is sent to a few professionals who then respond, stating their willingness and ability to deliver these requirements. 52  Beauty Launchpad India | 08.18

What all goes into training the UrbanClap professionals? What’s the investment involved in training the staff? All our professionals go through rigorous training and a 2-step security check before they are on boarded onto the platform. We have certified trainers who conduct these sessions and professionals are checked on various levels to ensure the highest quality of service is delivered. For all our professionals, we have the app training to begin with, wherein they are taught on how to review and accept leads that they receive and further communication with customers once a job has been assigned. Our salon professionals are shortlisted via a thorough training right from the type of products being used, application and correct methods of usage for the services we offer such as waxing, facials, manicures, pedicures, etc. For our other technical professionals ( carpenters, plumbers electricians), there is everything involved right from the tools to always have, the correct usage of these and the methods involved in repairing and building. How do you maintain the standards especially hygiene for salon and beauty services? Quality of products and hygiene is of utmost importance to us. To regulate the same, we, on a monthly basis, procure products directly from the brands which are then further distributed amongst the beauticians. Weekly surprise audits are also conducted to ensure that the beauticians are well stocked. If you could share the data analysis on the customers? To our surprise, the number of downloads is almost equal. Salon at home being one of biggest feeders, we expected to see a larger percentage of women user’s however, services like car cleaning, home cleaning etc bring in a good number of men user’s, too. Salon at home remains to be our highest moving category. However, our focus audience has always been working moms, stay at home moms and an app like this eases the pain of going to a salon to avail your monthly services. What are the company’s expansion plans down the line? We are currently serving in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Pune. We have recently started our overseas expansion by launching our services in Dubai. Within India, we are looking to expand into Jaipur and Chandigarh.

Salon hair care market in INDIA

In a first time ever interview to industry media, Agnieszka Saintemarie, Industry Manager of Kline’s Consumer Products gives insights on the Salon hair care business in India drawing from Kline’s Salon Hair Care Global Series. — By Ritoo Jhha How big is the salon hair care market in India? Organised vs. disorganised? The salon hair care market in India (according to Kline’s Salon Hair Care Global Series report scope) is worth INR 11.7 billion at the manufacturers sales level in 2017. We don’t differentiate between organized or disorganized market but rather capture sales of all brands being used in salons in India. What are the top five brands in salons for haircare? The top five brands in the Indian salon hair care market all come from large multinational players. They are L’Oréal Professionnel, Matrix, Wella, Schwarzkopf Professional and Kérastase. What has your study revealed regarding the peculiarities of the professional market in India? Among 27 countries, and many of them in Asia, covered in the latest edition of Kline’s Salon Hair Care Global Series study, India is by far the fastest growing country market when it comes to professional hair care product sales. Although the market slows down slightly every year, it still shows 13% increase in 2017. Unlike most other Asian markets, Indian competitive landscape is dominated by multinational giants. Market growth is driven by the ongoing demand for salon services, such as hair coloring, straightening/smoothing, and cutting and styling. Additionally, increasing salon consumption and take-home sales of treatment products, such as bond-builders and oil-based products, support the market growth. How does the business spread look between care, styling and colour? According to Kline’s Salon Hair Care Global Series report, hair care (shampoos and conditioners) is by far the largest category accounting for almost 60% of the market, followed by hair coloring which is roughly half of the size of care category. Hair texturizing, and hair styling are minor categories, collectively accounting for approximately 13% of the market. What is the fastest growing category? Hair coloring is the fastest-growing category, growing above 15%. Although grey coverage continues to be the key reason behind category growth, there is a growing demand for fashionable colors influenced by celebrities. What does the retail scenario look like in salon hair care? Currently sales of professional hair care products to consumers happen mostly outside salons. In fact sales that happen outside salons – whether online or in brick and mortar stores are twice as important as salon retail. What services are most availed? Unlike in other markets, skin care is the biggest revenue generator for salons in India, followed by cutting and styling and hair coloring. Have you studied the growth pattern of business in festive and bridal season? What are the conclusions? We do not specifically track this information, however sales during the festive and holiday season definitely peaks. Have you studied the professional skin care business in salons? What percentage is it of business? In terms of hair salons, skin care services account roughly for one third of their revenues. 56  Beauty Launchpad India | 08.18
