Dear Reader

COnTRIbuTORs

Just when I thought summer is boiling down to an anticlimactic end, things are thrown back in top spin. We, at Beauté Espace headquarters, are gearing up for the second edition of the Salon Management Congress (SMC)... this time in New Delhi. With top experts from the industry gracing various panel discussions, we will be covering a plethora of topics from scaling up and expanding footprint to hygiene and sanitation, and from specialisation to sustainability of salons. There will be dedicated sessions for skill development and use of technology, too, along with keynote address by trailblazers. If you want to make it big in the salon industry, you simply can’t afford to miss the SMC at Professional Beauty Expo, on 4th and 5th of June, 2018, at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. If you are a hairdresser wanting to start your own salon, a single salon owner planning to expand your business, a hair salon wishing to branch out into beauty or an entrepreneur looking at improving the bottom line, you will find SMC a treasure trove of knowledge and information. To register yourself as a delegate, visit www.professionalbeauty.in During summers, your skincare routine calls for a change. While most women make minor corrections in their regimen, not all are aware of summer-friendly in-salon treatments that are a ‘must’ to keep the damage caused by excess sun and humidity at bay. Turn to our feature on Summer Skincare and learn all about in-salon skincare. Beginning this issue, we are featuring a new series in the magazine – Power of One – focussing on the success stories of standalone salons. Last month, we witnessed interesting events, such as the launch of Marie Claire Paris Salon franchisee in India, the Sebastian Jam Gallery session and an extravaganza by Moehair India. Find a recap of these events in the following pages. In our business section, you can read interviews of industry stalwarts. And to wind up, we bring you the lowdown of the looks of fitness icon Milind Soman’s new bride. With such a wide variety of stories to catch your interest, we hope you find the May issue as happening as the summery month intself. See you at SMC 2018!

Curl power

Sebastian Gallery Jam Session 2018 lived upto its promise of showcasing the trendiest looks of the season. Brad Lepper, Sebastian Creative Artist for Australia and New Zealand, enthralled the audience with his creativity.

Brad Lepper in conversation with Kanishka Ramchandani, Managing Editor, Beauty Launchpad. Tell us more about the Twisted line-up. Twisted is about bringing moisture and bounce back in the hair. With curly hair, you lose moisture and shape of the curl easily. So, the products in the Twisted range help get all that back into your curls. How do you convince your client to maintain her natural curly texture and not go for a poker straight look? It all starts with how you are caring for your curls, what products you are using at home. Curls tend to get frizzy and get this blown-away look. You need something like Twisted to keep curls in shape and keep them bouncy. But education is the biggest thing for your clients. You have to give them the right products and make sure they are taking proper care at home. The cleanser and detangler in this range has a hydration compound and seaweed extract, which keeps the hair strand protected from artificial moisture.

T

his year’s Sebastian Professional Gallery Jam Session in Mumbai opened with international expert Brad Lepper creating hair magic on stage by decoding the trends for the season. The styling session also had interesting interludes as the dynamic dance troupe Kings United put up an energetic dance performance to showcase how the movements of the body can replicate that of curls thus perfectly syncing with the ‘Twisted’ theme of the event. The event was a creative and inspirational session for the top Sebastian stylists from across the country. It stood out as a unique combination of training, workshop and a platform for international hair trends. Sebastian Professional via its Gallery Jam Session invites the top hairstylists from the best salons across India to experience not only an International Hair Show but also a comprehensive workshop, which in turn modernises their view towards the in-trend looks for 2018. At this Gallery Jam, Sebastian combined the art of hairdressing with music and dance and presented its dynamic ‘Twisted’ colelction. Brad took the guests through the six looks step by step. The looks showcased the talent and skill that the Sebastian Professional stylists are known for. “With Sebastian’s new Twisted collection, it now allows you to embrace curls and movement. With the next level of curl cutting showcased on this collection, you can empower client’s natural hair texture and give them the volume and control that they need in their hair,” he said. 26  Beauty Launchpad India | 05.18

Which haircuts work well for curly hair? We have completely different techniques for cutting curly hair. The curl needs to bounce and wrap around itself. Colouring techniques like Balayage and Ombre also work on curls as they help create texture. For the clients in my salon, we put a lot of colour on curly hair, making it stand out. Which trends are in on your coast? The ‘lob’ is still trending but with more texture in it. Beach waves are big, too. In updos, loose ones with natural movement are in. In colour, chocolate blondes, my favourites, are trending. We are also doing a lot of caramelised browns. The most important aspect is the skin tone, as the hair colour has to complement it. Does Twisted work well on men’s hair, too? Yes, it does. Men with curly hair find it difficult to maintain it especially if its grown out and fluffy. Twisted products will allow it to be more controlled, more moisturised and more in form. Do you have more training sessions in India? Yes, apart from the session today, I have another one for 40 people with four hairstyles, two hair cuts and tips on how to cut curly hair. Any advice for Indian hairdressers? Listen to your clients! Try to understand their concerns at home and then help them as much as possible. Your clients should never have a bad hair day.

Pamper Your Hair Melroy Dickson shares tips to enhance the beauty of salon treated hair with MatrIx Opti.Haircare range

I

ndia is witnessing a huge change in people’s approach towards beauty & lifestyle. Consumers today have become very conscious about their looks and are open to experimenting with their styles. the culture of trying out different in-salon treatments is also evolving significantly. the salon industry too has come a long way from providing just haircuts and color touch-ups to, today, offering a number of services ranging from hair straightening and smoothening to hair coloration and styling. While you enjoy the benefits of these services, it is also important to know how the beauty of the treated hair can be prolonged and enhanced through post-service treatments. to help clients effectively enhance and maintain the beauty of their hair after the salon service, Melroy Dickson, General Manager Education, MATRIX India shares ultimate tips for in-salon post care treatments with Opti.Haircare by MatrIx.

Melroy Dickson

NOURISH YOUR LONG LOCKS Long, voluminous hair is every girl’s dream and keeping the length is always a request she makes to her hairdresser. But maintaining long locks can be a 28  Beauty Launchpad India | 05.18

challenge in a humid country like India. Women always feel the only way to deal with long hair problems such as rough hair and split-ends is to trim them or go short. But, experts at MatrIx recommend that instead of trimming away your splitends, tackle the issue at the heart of the problem that is lack of nourishment. the correct way of taking care of long hair is to ensure that each section is catered to and cared for with a tailored solution. MatrIx, offers a professional specialist haircare range to care for long hair with Opti.Long Nourish Protect, the professional specialist care range for long hair offering up to 98% more nourishment* for your hair. Enriched with Ceramide, the Opti.Long Nourish Protect range helps combat the various issues faced by the different sections of long hair and provides the

necessary nourishment and protection that leads to longer, stronger hair that is tangle-free throughout the length. With the revolutionary Opti.Long Nourish Protect range, Matrix offers a unique in-salon service, Growth Booster** Service. this treatment consists of all the products in the Opti.Long range and is a targeted treatment to strengthen long hair and reduce breakage to give nourished, healthy hair. Melroy’s Tip: Use lukewarm water while rinsing your hair after the application of shampoo and conditioner for better results. * Instrumental Test - Shampoo + Conditioner + Leave-In Cream vs. non-conditioning shampoo. ** Due to protection and nourishment action leading to lesser breakage

JAZZ UP YOUR STRAIGHT HAIR LOOK though sultry waves and braided looks have been in trend for the past few seasons, Indians will always hold a special place in their hearts for straight hair. Ideal for both casual and swanky events, straight hair is easy to manage and certainly the best in terms of versatility. While straightening and smoothening services have proven to be a boon for frizzy and untamed hair, it is essential to invest in a specialist post-care regime to enhance and prolong the results of these services. With its breakthrough professional specialist treatments, MatrIx offers a perfect post-straightening solution – Opti.Care Smooth Straight. Enriched with Shea Butter, this range helps control and smoothen chemically straightened hair and also helps condition and moisturize for healthy-looking, smooth and silky hair. this includes 2 in-salon treatments: Opti.Care Nourish and Seal treatment and Opti.Care Smooth and Seal treatment. the Opti.Care Nourish and Seal Treatment is an intense nourishing in-salon treatment that deeply treats hair fiber resulting in soft and smooth hair and Opti.Care Smooth and Seal Treatment is a deep nourishing in-salon treatment that helps prevent split-ends in straightened or smoothened hair. Melroy’s Tip: Never apply a serum near the roots. It is always better to distribute a serum to the part of the hair that needs it the most — the mid-lengths and the ends. For better effectiveness, use the hair serum on damp hair.

DAZZLE THEM WITH SHINY DARK TRESSES Greying of hair is a natural process and in order to cope with it, clients go for grey coverage colouration, which is now a common service in salons. However, after coloration, protecting that color from fading can be a challenge. So, to help you keep up the shine and beauty of your dark colored manes, Matrix presents 2 advanced Blackspa treatments - Supreme Shine and Protect BLACKSPATM and Mirror Shine BLACKSPATM. Supreme Shine and Protect BLACKSPATM is an insalon shine enhance treatment that intensely nourishes and treats hair post a grey hair coverage service. this treatment protects dark colored hair for upto 24 washes*. Mirror Shine BLACKSPATM imparts brilliant mirror shine throughout the length of the hair and ensures that your dark hair shines noticeably more than ever. Melroy’s Tip: It is imperative that you give your colored hair continued care to help them keep their shine. after getting a BLaCKSPatM, always get home care to ensure that your glossy hair is well-maintained. * System of Opti.black shampoo, booster dose, masque and serum vs. non-conditioning shampoo system. 05.18

Art of Indian Coiffures Seema V Jerajani, the hairdressing veteran and educator, launched her book, Art of Indian Coiffures, recently in Mumbai

S

eema V Jerajani is a name that needs no introduction. One of the pioneers of the Indian Salon industry, Seema has donned many hats – hairdresser, salon owner, make-up artist and educator. With the launch of her book – Art of Indian Coiffures – she has brought together decades of experience and expertise. The book was launched in Mumbai on 7 April, 2018, in the company of industry stalwarts and Seema’s well-wishers. Speaking about her inspiration behind the book, she said, “This book is my way of spreading education in hairstyling across the country, particularly in places where its often not possible for aspiring hairstylists to come to cities for education. This book will benefit and inspire hairstylists and make-up artists from all over the world and continue to preserve this art of Indian hairstyling for the future generations.” The book is a trip through India’s finest hairstyling archive. In this book, Seema has drawn inspiration from art itself and from the hairstyles found in various museums, temples and galleries she visited to study the conception of her debut book. The book has a collection of 18 looks that includes six inspirational, six traditional and six contemporary looks. The looks are explained with elaborate instructions in English and Hindi, detailed photographs for each step and Seema’s guidance on creating each look. Elaborating about her experience, she said, “This was my first experience in not only writing a book, but researching, photographing and editing; it has been an overwhelming journey. For centuries, hairstyling has been referred to as an art. In the Sri Brahma-samhita, composed of verses of prayers by Lord Brahma glorifying the supreme Lord Krishna at the beginning of creation Text 37, there is a mention of the Chausath Kala or the 64 Arts. The word Kala, meaning art is used in a wide sense from dance and drama to literature and fine arts. Kesamarjana-kausala: the art of combing hair is also referred to as Kala (art).” The book is available in three different variations – the original Art of Indian Coiffures book (`5,500), and a coffee table version (`2,800) without the technical details, and the limited edition book (`6,400) that comes with a special packaging and gold accents. Enquires regarding sales of the book can be made at artofindiancoiffures@gmail.com. 05.18

GO RED, GO BOLD

TURN HEADS WITH A BRAID

When it comes to high-impact hair colors, nothing beats a deep cherryred shade. Subtle and soft or totally bold and vibrant, red is sure to grab eyeballs! While you are all set to make a statement, why not amp your look by giving your hair color a “melted effect?” Swap your muted browns for something fresh and summery with the trendiest hair color technique – “Color Melting.” Try the Choco Cherry Melt by MATRIX and savour the classic combination of luscious cherries and dark chocolate that will accomplish your to-dye-for #haircolorgoals! This chic color melt uses, SoColor shades #5.8, #6.8 & SR RV.

As the summer heat takes a toll, braiding your hair not only keeps you cool and looks chic, it also keeps frizziness at bay. Right from the Dutch braid to the milkmaid braid to the regular four strand braid, these easy styles bring out hair color beautifully and complete your beach side summer look. But, to ace your braided look, ensure that your hair has good texture and a good grip. Using MATRIX Stylelink Texture Builder will give your hair not just the right texture but will also help maintain your hair with the braids.

KEEP MAKEUP & WARDROBE ON POINT When you are experimenting with hair colors and trends, you can’t be lazy with your outfits and makeup. Give some thought to your overall

look each day by selecting summery pieces that are trendy and flattering. Put away your thick foundation and creamy products and keep your makeup light and fresh. Make sure to use sunscreen and lipbalm to protect your skin even on the harshest days!

LET YOUR HAIR ENJOY THE BEACH TOO Now that you have your perfect look in place, why not hit the beach, put on a gorgeous swim suit, flaunt your beachy waves and take a dip in the sea, especially when on a holiday? While we do prepare for that, there’s always the fear of the saltwater or chlorine that could make your hair extremely dry and could stop you from taking that relaxing swim. To avoid this, always use a leave-in on your hair to protect it from getting damaged. While applying, ensure that it is evenly distributed across all strands of hair to protect hair before going for a swim.

PROTECT YOUR HUES FROM FADING Colored hair looks best when vivid. To prevent your dreamy melted hues from fading in the summers, ask your hair stylist for shampoo and conditioner formulas that are specifically made for colored hair. You can use the

MATRIX Biolage ColorLast homecare range that is infused with the anti-fade properties of orchid extracts and the latest Biomatch technology that helps to maintain shiny and vibrant color for up to 9 weeks* Ensure to always use the complete homecare regime, shampoo, conditioner and leave in serum and don’t forget to go for an in-salon treatment atleast once a month.

STAY FRESH AND HYDRATED As record high temperatures are blanketing our country, staying hydrated is essential. While drinking water is an indispensable habit, adding some flavour to it will also make it more fun! If you are craving for something sweet and savoury, add some berries! From refreshing cherry iced tea, to a delicious strawberry smoothie, keep hydrated with some refreshing, cool drinks!

Hair / Expert Talk

Against all odds Ashwin Mahajan, Creative Director, LOOKS Vasant Kunj, speaks about his journey so far and the path ahead.... — By Isha Gakhar EARLY VOYAGE My journey has been brimming with high spirits and excitement. And, it was the unflinching faith of my mother that kept me going during my abysmal low phases too ! Under the guidance of the celebrity hairdresser Darshaan (Yewalekar), I got introduced into the hairdressing arena. In 2004, I enrolled myself at HABIBS Academy in Delhi for a foundation course. The initial days were extremely challenging because of the lack of proper communication skills. There were other aspects too, for instance, the right way of holding the tools, etc. But I didn’t let this affect me and continued my practice sincerely with dedication. I still remember practising ‘scissor-over-comb’ at night in my blanket, so no one could make fun of me at the PG accommodation!

OVER thE YEARs I always respected time, and that has helped

me grow. In the early years, I’ve even worked as a pantry boy. It was while assisting my godfather Parry Patel that I learnt the basics of hairdressing. He is not only a hair magician, but also a compassionate person too. It’s my vision to transform the Indian hair industry, where salons will play a pivotal role in creating a person’s outlook and personality.

skiLLEd ARtist My approach towards hairdressing is quite different. I visualise a particular look on an individual and prefer to mix and match techniques which is appreciated by my clients. I feel this is my greatest strength.

YOunG Guns Today, hairdressing is definitely the best profession to be in! Of course, we need young, creative leaders in the industry who can bring out the best in every individual. In hairdressing, one gets to express who they are as an individual.

What’s the secret of er hair? your salt-n-pepp y is my George Cloone be e en cutting inspiration. i’v r more than fo ir my own ha w. i don’t eight years no as i believe colour my hair, carried be greys can e. yl st th wi

CELEbRitiEs And mORE I have worked with a host of Bollywood celebrities, including Priyanka Chopra, Randeep Hooda and Hrithik Roshan to name a few. However, I would like to style the hair for those housewives and mothers who constantly work behind the dynamics of families without getting their due recognition.

tREnd tALk 2018 is all about being trendy – a combination of cool colours for summers like wine and mocha brown will a great way to beat this summer heat. Finally, we are in the golden era where hair can be coloured yet remains healthy at the same time, all thanks to Olaplex and L’Oréal Smartbond. For cuts, it has to be lobs and long tresses with face contouring and volume with movement.

My mentors...  Vidal Sassoon for inventing the systematic cutting approach.  Sanjay Dutta for his decisiveness and vision.  Parry Patel for his nature and creativity.  Deepak Jalhan for his commitment towards people. 36  Beauty Launchpad India | 05.18

Beauty / Bridal Diaries

A be‘fitting’ bride

Ankita Konwar tied the knot with India’s fitness idol, Milind Soman. Their wedding was a perfect confluence of the Assamese and Maharashtrian cultures, as seen in the bride’s look.

can portray a glowing and gleaming face. I researched a couple of Maharashtrian brides, as I wanted Ankita to have a touch of the culture. Essentially in terms of make-up I found the half moon bindi an integral part of the look, so that’s one thing that I sourced for her.

H

ere’s a lowdown by celebrity hair and make-up expert Ashima Kapoor, who designed the bride’s look.

The lips were kept coral (Antwerp from NYX), which blended perfectly well with the coral and white rose jaimalas.

Hair: Ankita’s hair was swept into a textured messy chignon. A half moon mogra string, which coordinated with the bindi, adorned her hair. The chignon itself was a half moon in shape. Soft tendrils were left in front to keep it natural and vintage looking. The entire hair look was done without any artificial hair extensions — the idea being to keep the look as real as could be. D-Day outfits The ace fashion designer Madhu Jain designed Ankita and Milind’s outfits. Keeping in mind that the wedding was held on Earth Day, Madhu used her signature bamboo-silk textile, which not only is organic but is handwoven and a 100% biodegradable. Since Ankita is from Assam, the bamboo textile honours her home state, where bamboo is an extremely valued plant as it generates livelihoods. She kept the colour palette ivory and gold, which is what Assamese brides wear. Madhu wanted the Maharashtrian-Assamese combination to be a winning one. That’s why she chose to specially have a nine-yard sari woven for Ankita (Milind had requested it as well!). The nauvari sari is quintessentially Maharashtrian. It’s not easy to drape, and this difficult task was done by Milind’s mother. Madhu wove Venkatagiri motifs in gold thread using the Jamdani technique of the West Godavari Region of Andhra Pradesh. She did a similar his and hers colour palette, and used the motif of running bulls on both the sari pallu and on Milind’s stole. This was to suggest a flow between the bride and groom, a mingling of two persons into one soul and being one with nature. 05.18

Make your skin sun-proof T

here’s rarely any routine or product that will help you all the year around. You make lifestyle changes with changing weather conditions. So, why should your skincare routine remain the same? While it may seem like a logical conclusion here, most of us don’t bother upgrading our regimen to suit the season. This results in skin damage and loss of faith in reliable brands and products. Both these evils can be avoided with the simple act of adjusting to a customised routine as per the season. Summer season has acquired a different character in the last decade. Ten years earlier people would go about their regular lives even during summers. The only break in it was the mandatory visit to one’s native place. Today, summer season calls for a ‘real’ vacation, replete with beach outings, brunches, Summer/Resort wear and international travel. As your lifestyle makes a 360 degree shift, your skincare regimen needs to follow suit. Beauty Launchpad takes you on a summer high with expert talk, product recommendations and global trends on summer time skincare.

growth will be the young consumers as the global market trends show a shift in the spending patterns of consumers as the younger brigade is replacing the older consumer. There is a definite tilt towards natural and organic products, both in professional and retail brands. Therefore, brands are investing a lot in the R&D of products in a bid to incorporate more and more naturally sourced ingredients. While anti-ageing solutions continue to be in high demand, skin lightening and sunscreen products are gaining rapid popularity. Each market will have its own set of popular products/treatments, but one fact is certain, skincare is fast becoming an inseparable part of everyone’s grooming routine, men and women alike. As per a Euromonitor report, India, Indonesia and Turkey are seen as emerging markets for the skincare business. Technology is and will continue to play a vital role in larger scheme of things as it will bring in new ingredients, new methods such as 3D printers, diagnositc tools and digital apps to aid skincare related issues.

1. Face masks and patches: Masks provide deep hydration and take care of your skin’s texture, making them a must-have in summers. Facial masks have been trending big since the beginning of the year. Amongst the many variants, peel-off and sleepin masks are quite a hit. Similarly, patches for under eyes, T-zone and blackhead prone areas are also in demand. 2. Body care: Your body deserves to be treated with as much ‘tender, loving care’ as your face. Massage oils, shower gels, body lotions are doing the rounds to help you have a better summer. 3. Sunscreen: This one is a no-brainer. While a sunscreen is important all twhe year round, it’s an absolute must during summers. The new-age sunscreen has become multi-purpose, given the hectic pace of lifestyle. It has tinted moisturiser in it, thereby eliminating the need of a CC cream. 4. eco-friendly products: Yes, it’s happening! Consumers are finally gearing up to go ‘green’ with their grooming routine. Checking out the ingredients, source, chemicals, recycling icon, not animal test icon, etc is becoming the order of the day. 5. Innovation is the king: Innovative products will get an upper hand in the skincare game. Novel products like the essence of a natural source or an emulsion or oils extracted from exotic ingredients will influence the consumer’s choices this year. 6. Skincare supplements: Products/ treatments are being clubbed with oral supplements to enhance skin, hair and nails. Clients are diagnosed and a complete package of in-salon or in-clinic and at-home care is recommended along with supplements, making ‘bespoke’ the buzzword in the skin domain. 7. Fight against pollution: Life out of doors is wrought with pollution, which adversely affects our skin and undoes all the care we take of it indoors. Brands have tried to incorporate this concern in their product offering by bringing out technology that enables them to battle the effects of pollution. 44  Beauty Launchpad India | 05.18

SkinCeuticals, a leader in advanced skincare technology, has announced the launch of the CryoCorrect Treatment. This new non-invasive, in-office treatment gently freezes away unwanted age spots, sun spots and skin tags from the face, hands and body in as little as one treatment. Following a full body skin check, this treatment features the SkinCeuticals CryoCorrect PRECISION™ pen, an FDA cleared device that dispenses a precise flow of carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 freezes the skin at a milder temperature than traditional cryogens like liquid nitrogen, which is extremely cold and commonly used to remove a wide range of unwanted spots from the skin. The recovery process varies from 4 to 12 weeks, depending on patient response. Visible improvement can be seen in as early as 4 weeks with healthy skin appearing from week 4–12.

WoRld-claSS SKIncaRe In IndIa Given the unique climate conditions found in India, we asked experts here to tell us what works best on the skin during summers. Here’s what our expert panel had to say... “Every year, summers take a toll on the skin. The summer heat, pollution, humidity wipes it off the natural glow, and sometimes, invites infections. To avoid all these hassles, and to keep your skin radiating like before it is necessary to follow a summer skincare regimen,” said Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, MD Skin, Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Trasi’s Clinic & La Piel. Elaborating on the problem of excessive humidity, Avni Amlani, Education Director, Dermalogica, said, With humidity and heat the skin is left feeling sticky, from the oiliness, sweating and to add to this debris and pollutants adhering to it. Thorough cleansing is needed more than the usual twice a day routine. It is advisable to carry a gentle foaming cleanser in the bag or leaving it at your workplace so you can cleanse the face in the middle of the day. This will reduce the possibility of irritation, itching and breakouts.” Shahnaz Husain, CEO of Shahnaz Herbals Inc, is of the opinion that “a special skin care regime helps to remove impurities and protect the skin without disturbing the normal pH balance.” As experts, both dermatologists and skin aestheticians meet customers with different skin concerns every day. When we asked them which are the common problems faced during summers, they enlisted the following: 1. Tanning, sun burn and allergies 2. Acne and rashes 3. Sensitivity and oil/shiny skin 4. Pigmentation and skin dehydration 5. Fungal infections, seborrhea, photomelanosis and melasma

SummeR caRe Most beauty salon and clinics agreed that they see a rise in footfalls during summers for predominantly two reasons – summer skin concerns and vacation, which allows people to invest time in aesthetic solutions. Dr Trasi found that the treatments which were popular during summers were chemical peeling and exfoliating skin treatments to remove tan and give the skin a glow. “We run offers for peels, medi facials and lasers during summers,” she added. Gunjan Jain, National Education Manager, Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals, regards de-tanning or tan removal services like Cheryl’s TanClear

that consists of Tri System of AHA, ClariGlow Facial that controls sebum secretion, and ClariNzyme treatment that works on impurities controls oily skin removes blackheads and whiteheads as popular summer treatments. “Cheryl’s also organises the ‘Skin Scan Activity’ in various salons, which includes scientific diagnosis by an expert and suggest skin services as per the present skin condition and requirement.” She provided some important insights into the consumer behaviour. According to her, the Indian Consumer is becoming discerning about skincare. Kantar Data suggests that consumers believe in a facial when it comes to achieving younger looking skin, glowing complexion or solving problems like darks pots and tan. On an average, they visit salons thrice a year for skin compared to twice a year for hair treatment. In that sense, skin has more potential for the salon but that potential needs to be untapped by professional skin brands by building consumer engagement programmes. “Dermalogica has treatments like ProSkin30 and ProSkin60 treatments, with the focal aim to be oil control, sensitivity, brightening/ detanning and express treatments that includes extractions. The professional skin therapist customises the selected modules/ techniques to deliver the desired benefits,” elucidated Amlani. Sometimes basics can go a long way in ensuring good skin health. Husain recommended ‘clean-ups’ as a popular option. “Acne and pimple treatments help red and sensitive skin, while providing toning and refreshing. Cold compress with rose-based skin tonic is a given. At our Signature Salon, our Pearl, Diamond and Platinum facials are popular as they remove tan and revitalise the skin. We have a special system of ‘Courses’ for acne treatments and also for other skin treatments, like pigmentation or scar removal. Our customers also get different types of discounts,” she added.

Shahnaz Husain • Rose water is a good skin toner and a must in hot weather, to refresh the skin. • Watermelon juice is also a good skin toner and relieves summer dryness, too. • Using a facial scrub also helps to keep the pores free of clogged oil. • Apply fresh Aloe Vera gel to the skin helps to soothe and heal sunburn. • Fruits like banana, apple, papaya, orange can be mixed together and applied on the face two or three times a week. • Cucumber juice (or pulp) mixed with two teaspoons powdered milk and one egg white can be used as a face mask during summers.

avnI amlanI Use a cleanser with salicylic acid to balance the oiliness and remove the buildup off dead skin cells. Use a gentle powder exfoliant daily to enhance the exfoliation process, leaving the skin looking radiant. Spritzing an calming mist will provide hydration, followed with a moisturiser with a built-in SPF to protect from UV damage and signs of premature ageing. Use a masque twice a week for nourishment and rejuvenation along with serums and a night cream.

dR SheFalI tRaSI 1. Use sunscreen. Apply it 30 mins before sunexposure and reapply every 3 hours. 2. Drink more of water to replenish the volume lost due to sweat. 3. Consume more of vitamin C rich foodstuffs. 4. Apply retinol or vitamin C serum at night.

dR ShuBha dhaRmana 1. Use sunscreen lotions as well as tablets

to protect yourself from the ill effects of the sun. 2. Use your own DIY masks at home with cooling ingredients such as cucumber, aloe vera juice, yoghurt, etc.

Exfoliation goes a long way Exfoliate all the dead skin cells sitting on your body. All the dead skin that has accumulated over the winter makes your skin look dull and lifeless. Make your own scrub or get yourself your favorite scrub and exfoliate gently every other day in circular motion. You can use mechanical exfoliators like loofahs and sponges or even book yourself in for a microdermabrasion or a peel which also exfoliate your skin with diamond or salt crystals or an acidic solution, respectively. — Dr Shuba Dharmana, Dermatologist & Medical Director, Lejeune Medspa, Bangalore

Power of One We at Beauty Launchpad are always looking at showcasing newer talent and standalone salons. In the series ‘Power of One’, we will explore veteran salons that have stood the test of time. — By Rohini Lall

Glam makeover for Style n Xs Luxury has a new address... and it’s in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi. Walk into Style n Xs and experience great hair and beauty services amidst a serene earthtoned ambience. Evolution and experimentation have been the driving force behind Pranita and Jatin Mehendiratta’s vision for this place. The couple takes the maxim ‘change is the sole constant’ quite seriously and has seen to it that their salon never lags behind. Since its inception as a barbershop that progressed onto become a unisex salon, Style n XS has had a whopping nine restorations. Despite the constant overhauls, the salon is a symbol of change preserved in heritage. Style n Xs also houses a barbershop, which is run as a separate unit under the salon’s brand name. Established in 1982, it was then known as Fairlyland. Jatin joined the business his father had founded as a teenager. The salon has now completed 39 years, and has witnessed not only Jatin’s growth but the Indian salon industry’s too. Unlike a lot of owners, he can still be seen tending to clients instead of sitting in an enclosed cabin. The renovated salon has interiors that are uncluttered, posh and comforting. There are no jarring colours but a subtle play of light wood and matt gold. As you enter, you can see the Nail Bar, the Retail Experience and the hair and skin consultation on the ground floor. A flight of stairs below will take you to the skin and make-up studio, beauty rooms and the spa. A great new addition at the salon is the K experience room powered by the French luxury brand Kérastase. So, the next time you want to pamper yourself with luxury, head for Style n Xs. You have to experience it to believe it! 50  Beauty Launchpad India | 05.18

Meghna Beauty Parlour turns 40 “Her name carried all the luck that we needed to make this place what it is,” says Kusum Goel, Owner of Meghna Beauty Parlour, New Delhi, about her daughter. In 1978, an average provision store owner thought differently than his peers. While forty years ago the Goels were seen as people who had strayed away from the usual business path, they are now recognised as one of the city’s pioneers in affordable luxury in beauty and wellness. What started off with a staff of three people has now bloomed into a team of a hundred. Kusum recalls that in hours of excessive rush, they used to stack chairs outside and cater to their clients on the sidewalk. The edge they had over others was, and still is, their Bollywood connect, with the likes of Rakesh Roshan and Raj Babbar visiting them. Today, Kusum’s son and daughter-in-law who are in the entertainment business, bring the stars to their door. Over the years, the Goels experienced good times and bad but their enterprise continued to thrive. Kusum’s daughter now looks after the entire bridal section and would be no where rather than by her mother’s side. Since she was four, Meghna now proudly steps into her mother’s shoes. Meghna Beauty Parlour recently celebrated its 40th Anniversary of excellence in skin, hair and beauty in Delhi. The occasion was graced by the successful TV couple Manish and Poonam Goel along with happy customers and socialites such as Rrashmii Sachdeva, Sandeep Kaur, Mia Lakra, Pooja Malhotra, Lavina Bhatia, Deepa Devarajan, Shikha and Rahul Sharma. The 40th anniversary gave Kusum a reason to reflect upon the past four decades and count her blessings. However, the retrospection also brought forth her pet peeves, namely, disloyal staff and unforeseen government orders. “They took away our basement but we’ll continue to thrive,” she says, referring to the sealing drive that affected a lot of businesses in the area. As she looks at the four-storey edifice that she has built, her face beams with pride. Here’s wishing Kusum Goel and her team a prosperous journey ahead! 05.18

Business / Interview

Striding ahead

Beauty Launchpad engages Subham Virmani, Director - Strategy and Sales, Esskay Resources, in an interesting conversation about the beauty business and growth opportunities in product distribution.

  

We also intend to add five more professional brands on our website and would cover more than 5000 pin codes by the end of this year. We will also be launching more of our own private label brands for the salons and spas in various categories of nails and skincare. We aim to cover more than 5000 pin codes by the end of this year from our online portal www.esskay beauty.in.

What are the key challenges of distribution in India? One of the major challenges is the stiff competition to small scale retailers and price wars. Then there is logistics issue, especially in the case of equipment. Every state’s local taxation makes the billing more cumbersome for us as well as for our distributors. But the positive point is that we are not selling commodities, but we are selling brands. Each brand has a new concept, new philosophy and new communication strategies for similar target audience.

S

hedding light on mining the industry challenges and the game plan for the year ahead, Subham Virmani, Director - Strategy and Sales, Esskay Resources, discloses all this and much more in an exclusive interaction. Here’s an excerpt from his interview... What’s the game plan for 2018? At Esskay, we strongly believe in communicating achievements rather than futuristic plans. Wellness sector in India will be foreseeing tremendous growth in the coming years, and hence, we are gearing up for the same.  

We further plan to expand our distribution network to 300 cities by the end of 2018. The company also plans to open 50 new stores in the next five years across the country but will target North India in the first phase.

54  Beauty Launchpad India | 05.18
