Dear Reader
Features Editor Isha Gakhar
The Indian salon industry has been bravely battling the Goods and Services Tax (GST). With the upcoming festive season, the industry outlook has become positive. As you drive down any busy street, you find salon windows decked up with offers and discounts. Within the industry, we see brands launching trend collections, products and colours. Overall, we see a rising optimism amongst the industry stake-holders. Throwing some light on this optimism was the first edition of the Salon Management Congress, presented by Professional Beauty in association with Beauté Espace Media (Beauty Launchpad). The two-day conference had panel discussions on various topics related to establishing and running a salon. As varied ideas gave rise to healthy debates, salon owners in the audience learnt a lot from the experts who offered a 360 degree perspective of the business. The conference took into account key topics such as inventory management, talent hunt, staff retention etc. Read our extensive report on the Congress to know more about the panelists and their discussions. Continuing with our effort to connect the industry with brands, we at Beauty Launchpad teamed up with BBlunt Salons and Academy for a first-of-its-kind Salon Owners Summit. Celebrity stylist Adhuna Bhabani along with her team presented cut, colour and styling sessions at an event in New Delhi. While she gave out tips on hairdressing, she also demonstrated the use of BBlunt colour and styling products. After two successful back-to-back events, you would think we are exhausted. Certainly not! Here’s the October issue for you that has two inspiring collections. Schwarzkopf Professional has unveiled its Essential Looks collection with Opulent and Beat Icon looks. Vipul Chudasama and team have come up with their first Academy Collection – Romance. We are proud to present these two collections to you. We hope the festive season brings a resurgence of business for each and every salon owner. As always, we are with the Indian salon industry at every step.

Mel Cash, a world leading authority in sports massage was in Delhi recently and introduced the Fitness Massage at The luxury Five Star hotel - The Imperial. Mel Cash is Principal tutor, London School of Sports Massage and a Board Member of Sport and Remedial Therapies Council Member: Profession Specific Board of the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council. Mel has been a massage therapist since 1985, and has become one of the world’s leading authorities on the subject through his books and presentations. As a marathon runner and triathlete in the mid 1980s he began to use selfmassage regularly to aid his recovery from training. Realising its great potential he gave up an uninspiring career in business to develop a proper understanding of the subject. He qualified in Remedial Massage through the Northern Institute of Massage in 1985. He has written a few books on Sports Massage including one with Dr Jari Ylinen. Over the last few years, he has changed his focus away from sport and is much more concerned with developing a level of advanced remedial soft tissue therapy that properly meets the clinical needs of all sectors of the population. According to Mel: “Sports Massage is a preventive therapy and is applicable for all-from an athlete to a not so active individual. All the massage moves in this deep tissue therapy are based on Taichi - credited as effective treatment for relieving pain and uses energy rather than force. We as sports massage specialists are practitioners and also do psychotherapy along with massage to understand the issues of the patient and assist in recovery of the affected muscle, symptomatically. Sports massage can spot an injury or a strained muscle faster and help an individual/sportsman recover at a much better pace. Even when your muscles are not used to work outs and you feel pain once you start exercising, a simultaneous sports massage with right pressure can be a great help to open the clogged tissues so that the adaptation becomes easier. So we can say, good pain is vital for sports massage as it is used on a therapeutic level. The therapists at The Imperial Spa are that’s why highly trained in Fitness/ sports massage to understand the needs of the resident guests and apply pressure and pain as per their physical issues. They use the right amount of strength and control to make the recovery faster and smoother and I take pride in training them. With the regular sessions the international and domestic guests who stay here feel healed to a great extent and they come back for more sessions. This is one key area which is extremely beneficial along with spa / fitness/yoga for complete wellness. Sports massage also addresses lifestyle issues of posture, back pain and neck pain in a substantial way. When we sit for long hours our abdominal muscles are used inefficiently which leads to tightening of back muscles and eventually causes back pain. Massage helps in evading the symptoms but along with that posture and lifestyle changes are also a must which includes reducing weight and increasing mobility. Even for neck pain, sports massage tear the symptoms and relive the unpleasant tension and pain for relief. It addresses all sorts of medical conditions including Arthritis.” He further adds, “I would suggest that one should also focus on strengthening the abdominal muscles in the right manner to increase their core stability for supporting the back but beware, too much strengthening and tightening can cause trouble. For instance in men with 6 pack abs it can lead to breathing issues and in women with tight pelvic muscles formed due to excessive Pilates, can cause urinary incontinence. So everything in balance with regular sports massage sessions along with an adequate lifestyle, work in tangent to create a better quality of life.” The Imperial Spa offers the Fitness massage for resident guests with therapists trained by Mel Cash- Founder, London school of Sports massage. Fitness massage is a specialist and personalized area of Remedial massage. Deep tissue techniques are applied to effectively treat musculoskeletal aches and pains. Treatment supports injuries and occupational stress, improving posture and reducing pain or chronic discomfort. Price: `3700 + taxes for 30 mins and `6000 + taxes for 60 mins

eauty Launchpad India in association with BBlunt Salons hosted a one-day masterclass with celebrity hairstylists Adhuna Bhabani and Rohan Jagtap at the Eros Hotel, Nehru Place in New Delhi on October 3, 2017. The ‘Salon Owners Summit’ was a cutting-edge workshop showcasing the latest hair cutting and colouring techniques. Team BBlunt presented a creative combination of eight hair cuts and colour looks for the salon owners and professionals present. With a sheer focus on ‘wearability,’ BBlunt’s experts designed variation in terms of looks, featuring styles like long hairdressing, male styling, point cutting technique, et al. It was a mix of trendy and wearable styles with a subtle blend of braids, movement, texture and
volume. The hair colours were again very wearable based on the models’ skin tone and features. The palette varied from browns to mahogany and from blue black to wine. The looks were achieved by using BBLUNT styling products and Salon Secret hair colour. The three-hour class also had Adhuna dishing out pivotal points for the industry experts, for instance, how to handle a fussy client. She also shared her experience on working with Bollywood celebs such as Preity Zinta. The workshop concluded with a Q&A session with Adhuna where she spoke about her driving force, inspiration as well as classic principles of cutting with a modern edge. She also shared her perspective on the Indian hair and salon industry in terms of growth and education.
“To have the opportunity to meet and share my work experiences with hairstylists and entrepreneurs who share my passion, gives me tremendous pleasure. We have Beauty Launchpad to thank for making this whole platform possible. We are very grateful for the hospitality and support they’ve extended. My team and I are continuously trying to push the envelope with every collection we work on. The eight looks we presented at the Salon Owners Summit were a combination of haircuts, our latest introduction of Salonquality hair colour range Salon Secret and the BBLUNT range of styling products. My colleague and Senior Salon Director, Rohan Jagtap also created some stunning dressed long hairstyles while Mona Anand designed a palette of make-up for the event, which featured bold lips that accentuated our hair work beautifully. The Salon Owners Summit, our first-ever masterclass, was carefully curated with an aim to extend the brand to our peers within the industry through hands-on product demos, aesthetic expertise, sharing of experiences, cross ideating, understanding need gaps in the hair styling space, consumer demands and working on feedback received. It is an extremely crucial property we’ve initiated and the plan is to improvise on a larger scale year on year.” ADHUNA BHABANI Co-founder and Creative Director, BBLUNT 1 0 .17 | B EAUTY LAUNCHPAD INDIA

HAIR/Colour Trend
LADY,
MAKE UP YOUR HAIR! No, that’s not an error, we are indeed asking the ladies to make up their hair. Make up your mind about hair colour. Dare to wear a new hair colour, says L’Oréal Professionnel. Don’t you know, hair colour is the new make-up?
30
Y
ou walk into a room and people notice you. You walk into a room and people are entranced. If the latter statement describes you the best, you need to know all about the latest head-turning trend. Get an edge above your peers, stand out in the crowd, be the trend setter with statement hair colour. A technically sound, well-placed and salon done hair colour is your key to instant stardom. You never leave the house without your lipstick or a dash of mascara, so why not glam up your hair, too. L’Oréal Professionnel believes that hair colour has the capacity to enhance your facial features and your personality. With the right colour or mix of colours and with the right technique of colour application, you can wear hair colour like a red carpet diva. Whether your preference is for ombre or contouring, whether you prefer auburn locks or caramel fringes, a professional colourist can give you a stunning makeover with the right hair colour. The L’Oréal Professionnel ushered in the trend of #FrenchBrowns with actor/ author Twinkle Khanna earlier this year. The romantic Parisian lights and the French concept of beauty forms the inspiration for this modern and chic collection. This assortment of warm and cool browns from Majirel and INOA has inspired stylists to create signature looks. Let’s look at the trendsetting hues that were created on Twinkle for the French Browns Collection by L’Oréal Professionnel.

Cocoa Cherie The classic French fringe brings the best of the French girl style to the fore. Paying a tribute to the city of love – Paris – Cocoa Cherie features bespoke contouring in rich hazel hues. The hair is contoured in a cool shade of INOA 6.23 from the French Browns palette. The tousled styling looks effortless yet sophisticatd.
Caramel Belle The spirit of the Moulin Rouge is channeled in the soft Balayage look in dark gold honey tones of the Caramel Belle. Voluminous curls add extravagance to the cascading layers. The colour is INOA 6.53, which is painted with the Balayage technique to create drama.
Auburn Muse The structured bob in this style is a homage to the perfect geometry of the Louvre. The dichotomy of classic French aesthetic and avant-garde allure is replicated in this hairdo, wherein the structured bob is highlighted with Majirel 6.52, using the trending Babylights technique. The result is violet-tinted auburn hair. Just like the Louvre, the Auburn Muse look finely balances art and craft of colour and hairstyling.
Tailored for you Every look that Twinkle is seen wearing can be recreated for you to best suit your personality. A detailed consultation with the L’Oréal Professionnel colourist will help him understand your lifestyle and persona. Depending on your skin tone, a bespoke look will be created especially for you, based on the referrals from the collection.
Colour care To prolong the colour radiance of your tresses, you need special care at home. Opt for the L’Oréal Professionnel Série Expert Vitamino AOX range for nourishing, conditioning and boosting the hair’s shine. Formulated with ‘anti-oxidant technology’, the shampoo helps preserve colour radiance. It fights the fade, gently eliminates residue and helps protect colour treated hair. The conditioner leaves coloured hair easier to detangle and smoother in texture, while the gel-masque targets weakened and damaged areas of coloured hair and wraps them with a lightweight film to protect against everyday wear and tear. To maintain the colour treated hair, the in-salon Powermix Radiant Color Protection treatment should be availed at regular intervals. A unique look, just for you, awaits at a L’Oréal Professionnel salon. Your personalised French girl style is a salon appointment away. 1 0 .17 | B EAUTY LAUNCHPAD INDIA

BRING ON THE BRIDAL BRIGADE! Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals debunks skincare myths for all brides-to-be.
on their big day, but will provide them with a complete bridal regime. MYTH #1: A good scrub makes keeps pimples at bay!
I
t is certainly not a myth that a woman’s wedding day is the most important day in her life. From her trousseau to the food and décor, she wants everything to be perfect and spends months planning her big day. Amidst this hustle, the chances of her looking her radiant best may become bleak and as she approaches her big day, she must have the perfect skin to complete her look. Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals, India’s leading professional skincare brand, has the perfect bridal package that will not only make your clients look radiant
This is a very common myth, the more you scrub your face to remove impurities, the more your skin will glow, and keep pimples at bay. FACT: Getting a good scrub may not always help keep pimples at bay. Oil, dead skin cells, and bacterial growth cause acne. Excessive scrubbing dries out the skin which prompts extra oil production and therefore more breakouts. With Cheryl’s SensiAcne Treatment, say goodbye to pimples and acne. This treatment effectively works on sensitive skin with no harsh chemicals. MYTH #2: Calluses go away with time
It is common to ignore one's feet and many believe that cracked heels heal on their own. FACT: Cracked heels and calluses require care to heal. Thus, it is very important to get rid of calluses and cracks on your feet, and to keep them soft and moisturized. Addressing the issue of cracked heels, Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals introduced the HeelPeel Treatment, which helps repair painful calluses and cracks revealing soft and pampered feet in just 20 minutes. MYTH #3: Washing your face several
times a day, oily skin at bay
FACT: Any ordinary soap is not enough
to clear one’s skin of grease and acne. Simply washing your face a number of times in a day will not keep oily skin at bay. If skin is inherently oily, it can be treated to balance the oil levels required for healthy skin.
50
Swipe off the oil with Cheryl’s ClariGlow Treatment — a multi-layer treatment that eradicates excess oil without removing moisture from the skin. Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals provides a complete bridal regime, designed and customized for every bride to-be.
CHERYL’S BRIDAL REGIME: • he most important step in s in analysis is to find out your skin type and skin condition. Is your client’s skin normal, oily, dry or combination and is it also dehydrated and/or sensitive? • he next step is to now the concerns that bother your client the most i.e. is their skin dull, does it have acne or is it too oily, sensitive, etc. • he s in are pro essional will do a manual examination to check the skin type and condition and may also use machines such as a Woods Lamp and Hydrameter to check the oil and moisture levels. Every skin type and conditions has different needs and therefore requires different treatments and products. Oily skin needs oil to be reduced and controlled while dry skin need products with more oil. • Start your s in are a ial and home care regimen 3 months before the wedding to give the skin ample time to recover from any concerns • Cheryl s bridal pa age an be for 6 months, 3 months or 1 month before the wedding day.
Kick off this bridal season with the best solutions Cheryl’s has to offer, available at all Cheryl’s Salons!

NAIL SPA Experience The brand new Nail Spa Experience stands at a strategic location in Hiranandani Gardens in Powai. But it is housed in a nook that makes it ideal for relaxation. As I stepped into the spa, I was impressed by the intelligent use of a limited space. It is divided into two levels. The lower one has a reception desk, two nail counters and one backwash chair for hair services. The upper level has two mani-pedi chairs and a pantry. I opted for the Nature Fusion Manicure (`700) and Pedicure (`750), which was a 45-minute ritual. It involved cleansing, exfoliation, massage and mask. For colours, I selected the glitter gel nail colours – maroon for my toes (`1,250) and gold for my nails (`1,250). The well-trained staff at the Nail Spa Experience was courteous and warm, while the services and products were impeccable. — By Kanishka Ramchandani

The Wedding Clinic The Wedding Clinic is an entrepreneurial venture by Payal Seth and Dr Shaili under the hugely experienced stewardship of Dr Sonia Jekchandani to create a holistic aesthetic offer for brides-to-be. — By Rohini Lall
O
n the phone, Payal Sheth sounds enthusiastic and exuberant as she talks about her baby The Wedding Clinic. When I looked into it, I realised there was nothing they do not provide. With an enthusiasm that is almost infectious Payal then moved on to describing the place that is done in pastel shades of blue and gold that soothes you the moment you enter into the premises and instantaneously get whisked to the magical regal land where you’ll definitely be transformed into a queen. What’s more, your groom and your mom can get pampered along with you and while you do so, how about a getaway to destress? Sounds too good to be true? Let’s peer in for more.
When Payal met Dr. Shaili! Payal having done a brief stint with celebrity management and an entrepreneurial program with ISB had the idea of The Wedding Clinc while she and her to be partner were doing bullets six months prior to the own wedding ticking

items off the list and in a short while after, Payal with her head teeming with ideas, met Dr. Shaili the person who puts dreams into reality. Dr Shaili Sanghvi, currently based in Pune, comes with over 10 years of experience in aesthetic cosmetology. A thorough professional and a teaching enthusiast, Dr Shaili has trained many cosmetologists in the same field. Initially based out of Mumbai for many years and having worked in the beauty and wellness space with Tender Skin clinic Mumbai and Dubai, she has now partnered with the parent brand to start a one of a kind advanced aesthetic skin care division.
The duo now are the brains and hearts behind the gorgeous existence of Pune’s The Wedding Clinic. On why they chose Pune, she talked about the energy and vibrance of the city without the mad rush of Mumbai. What she also touched upon was the genuineness of the people around and their trust in them. As for the customer base, there has never been a lack, only surplus.
The good doctor Dr Sonia holds a commanding position in the field of Medical Aesthetics and is a renowned Dermatologist and

Beauty Launchpad exclusive interview with Lydia Sarfati, Founder and CEO, Repêchage... When you started off, was it difficult for you to be an entrepreneur because you are a woman? I have never thought of myself on those terms. Never had that block in my mind that because I’m a woman, I’ve limitations. My fundamental thoughts were always that I have opportunities because I am educated, have talent and I am a good human being. And it’s upto me to grab those opportunities. I also never sensed that those around me perceived me as someone who will not be able to achieve things. On the contrary, I met people who would say, ‘we know you can do it!’ How did you manage to get funding for your venture in the initial days? I was working at a wonderful salon and skincare centre in Manhattan. I was doing quite well. I was able to save some money. I was also very lucky that I could go to my husband, David, and ask him to lend me money and invest in me. I think that was the best 30,000 dollars investment that he made! (laughs) Back in 1977, 30,000 dollars was a lot of money. We had a big recession and big interest rates going on at that time in New York. Another major issue was that the crime rate in New York city was high and people were moving out of Manhattan. However, this made rents very accessible. So, I was able to rent almost 2000 sq. ft. on 53rd street, which is prime location, for only eight dollar a square foot. The same space today is 500 dollars! As I always say, here’s an opportunity, if you seize it at the right moment, you win. Tell us about your journey thereafter... I was able to build a beautiful skincare centre. Women were entering the business world. And my salon was in a strategic location. It was amidst the advertising offices and quite close to the Conde Nast building. I had all the beauty journalists and editors coming to me as my clients. Then they started writing about me and their experiences. I had literally fallen into the Mecca of the publishing world. I got favourable reviews and press. We were pioneers in skincare as at that time people didn’t talk much about skincare, it was also about make-
up. A fashion magazine did a photo shoot about facials and another one about body wraps. We were doing things that were not done before, taking skincare to a very artistic form. They all believed in my vision of beauty, which was skin. What advice would you give to aestheticians? If you are an aesthetician or any beaut professional, for you to succeed in your career, you need a vision. Your goals have to be clear and your path towards them have to be clear, too. You should have a good business plan, a good team, the right location and appropriate organizational skills to make it happen. What are your views on education? We have the Post Graduate Academy, as my whole focus has been on education. If you learn, you can succeed. I tell my employees and beauticians, be the very best that you can be. I have written a science and a business book. We now have digital learning opportunities through webinars. I’m the chairperson at CIDESCO, USA, and have been involved in imparting education in the US and worldwide. We deliver the very best of education to professionals. We also educate the customers the best way to retain them is to provide them with knowledge.
How do you deal with competition? I look at competition as an opportunity to do better. I look at creating my own trends and being at the cutting edge of science, technology and R&D. What’s your success mantra? Do what you say you will do, and deliver what you say you will deliver. What are your plans for India? I am looking at the salon division here for facial bars, at the medi spas for our advanced facials treatments, and at spas for bringing in the sensory treatments of Repêchage to provide a head-to-toe experience. What are your plans for yourself? To work smarter everyday! To develop new products and educational methods for different countries, which would enable women to be successful and independant. What’s your skincare routine? Rule No. 1: Never sleep with makeup on. I use the Repêchage Hydra 4 cleanser, followed by the toner. I also use a gentle honey and almond scrub. Every day, I use our sea serum, both at day and night. I follow it up with Triple Firming Cream, which has peptides. This is my daily routine. For make-up, I use our foundation with SPF. Every alternate night, I use our peptide mask. 1 0 .17 | B EAUTY LAUNCHPAD INDIA

Management Congress (SMC). Held on September 18th and 19th, at Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregaon, SMC was organised by Professional Beauty India, and curated by Beauté Espace, the event’s official Knowledge Partners. SMC opened with a keynote speech by Vikas Vij, Managing Director, Professional Beauty India, who shared some interesting trivia on the industry. Ritoo Jhaa, Editor and Publisher, Beauty Launchpad, shared some industryspecific facts and figures. The salon industry has been growing at a rate of 20-25% every year, and the fashion, food, and technology line products are the three most popular categories, she said.
Entrepreneur’s journey While the hair and salon industry may still have a slightly lop-sided ratio, it was interesting to note that the first discussion had an all-male panel! Samir Srivastava, CEO, Jean-Claude Biguine Salon & Spa, India Business; Sahil Gupta, CEO, BodyCraft Spa & Salon; Vikram Mohan, CEO and Co-Founder, Spalon India Pvt. Ltd.; Vikram Bhatt, Founder and Director, Enrich Salons & Academy; and Samir Srivastav, CEO, Jean-Claude Biguine, and Aby George Mathew, General Manager, Cheryl’s and MATRIX, expressed their varied views on how stylists and entrepreneurs can maintain a sharp focus on a range of things while building their salon business. profitable salons. Questions such as whether the salon should be aimed at the stylist or client, what supersedes - aesthetics or functionality, and many such topics were addressed and spoken about at length in this session.
Skincare segment The stage was then graced by the lady who is more fondly known as the Queen of Seaweed Lydia Sarfati, CEO, Repêchage. The highlight of this talk was her focus on how one can make skincare services work for your salon. Sarfati spoke at length about how important it is for salon owners to re-look at their skincare services menu as crossselling is the buzz word in the hair and beauty sector.
Online vs offline Gunjan Gaur, Salon Management Guru and Executive Director, ALPS Beauty Group, and Bhupesh Dinger, Director Operations, Enrich Salons & Academy had a detailed discussion on whether home services are complementing and enhancing the experience further, or whether they are a threat to the salon business. While Gaur preferred to stick to the age-old salon-going experience, Dinger shared how his brand has profited through this new model of service. The success of the first day of SMC ideally built the momentum for the second and final day!
for this session were Deepak Jalhan, Creative Stylist & Educator, LOOKS Salon, and Sachin Kamat, Director, Enrich Salons & Academy. Through their discussion, the audience was given peek into how successfully run salons use social media to reach out to new customers. Speakers at this session were Rohit Dedhia, Director, Enrich Salons & Academy, Subham Virmani, Esskay, and Marisa Goel, Managing Partner, Serena’s Beauty Salon. This session was quite interactive as the audience had a lot of queries regarding retail sales. The session gave meaningful insights on acing the
retail game, which included stocking the right inventory, retail display counter, staff involvment, etc.
Upsell & cross-sell The post-lunch session was all about upselling and crossselling. The panel was made up of Avni Amlani, International skin expert and consultant, Dermalogica India, Unnati Singh, Owner, Mansi Salons and Pralay Bakshi, Business Head, Bina Punjani Salons, Academy & Bridals.
