Missy wasa drop-in at the Brite Star After School Club. That meant she didn’t come to the Club every day. She only camewhen her father needed someone to take care of her for the day.

The Brite Star Kids always liked when Missy came. She waskind and a lot of fun to play with. Plus, her dog Pebbles, always came with Missy. Since all the children had known Pebbles for many years, the teacher allowed the Brite Star Kids to play with him until class began.

Pebbles had been a part of Missy’s family even before Missy wasborn. He wasa special dog. One time, a friend of Missy’s entered Pebbles in the Community Center Pet Fair. Pebbles won the award for the Cutest Puppy!

Another year, Pebbles won the award for being the Best Trained Dog. Missy taught him to do many tricks.

At the most recent Pet Fair Pebbles won for being the Best Looking Older Dog. Missy was very happy for her pet.

When Missy wasborn, Pebbles quickly became her protector. When baby Missy cried, Pebbles got her mother. He was always close by Missy. He even took naps next to Missy’s bed.

From the moment Missy wasold enough to play, Pebbles washer favorite playmate. Missy’s friends happily let Pebbles join in whatever they were playing.

Pebbles quickly became Missy’s best friend. They went for walkstogether. They played together. Pebbles still slept next to Missy’s bed. Sometimes he even snuggled in bed next to her.

Pebbles wasalways a busy little dog who loved to run and jump and play. But as Pebbles got older, he began to slow down. He didn’t have the energy to run and play. His legs hurt so he didn’t jump anymore.

Now Pebbles just stayed in his bed most of the time. He took lots of naps. He still looked happy when Missy cameto see him. His tail wagged happily when he sawher. But, he didn’t get up to play.

Then one day, Pebbles didn’t wantto eat anything. He stayed in bed all that day. He didn’t even lift his head when Missy camein. That night Pebbles went to doggy heaven.

Missy’s family buried Pebbles in their back yard. Missy and her friends sat by Pebbles grave. They talked about how much fun Pebbles was. Everyone missed Pebbles, but Missy missed him most of all.

After Pebbles died, the Brite Star Kids didn’t see Missy for a while. In fact, the next time they sawher wasat the Brite Star Pet Fair.

Missy was there telling people that she had learned about dogs and other animals who needed help because they were sick, old or homeless. No one cared about them. There wasa place called Barn Buddies that rescued some of these animals. Barn Buddies waspart of the Brite Star Ranch for Animals, a huge ranch where all kinds of animals lived. The animals were treated with love and kindness as they grew old.

Missy wasthankful that Pebbles had always had a home and that he wasloved. But she felt bad for the animals that didn’t have homes. To honor Pebbles, Missy and her father began raising money for the Brite Star Ranch and the Barn Buddies. The Brite Star Kids learned a valuable lesson from Missy. Brite Star Kids are always kind to other people, but they learned that Brite Star Kids can also be kind and helpful to animals.

Think About It

1. Does Missy go to the After School Club every day? 2. When did Pebbles come to live with Missy’s family? 3. What wasthe first award Pebbles won at the Pet Fair? 4. What happened to Pebbles as he got older? 5. What’s the name of the place that takes care of homeless animals?

Let’s Work Together

Are there pet shelters in your town? How can you help with animalsthat need care?

I will

• Learn about shelters, especially ones that rescue older animals. • Help raise money for the shelters to buy food for the animals. • Remember to always be kind to animals.

Animals can be wonderful, loving friends. If you have a pet, enjoy playing with him and loving him. If you see a dog or cat that seems to be lost, be kind to it and try to find it’s owner.
