From the Editor The holidays are a wonderful time of sparkle and joy! Locals and tourists alike embrace the season and come together to celebrate and create lasting memories with friends and family.
SOCIAL
A cherished tradition is the Christmas tree lighting ceremony. The moment the lights illuminate the tree there is a sense of warmth and unity that truly captures the essence of Christmas. But perhaps one of the most unique experiences during this time is the lighted boat parade. As dusk settles over our coastal waters, boats adorned with colorful lights sail gracefully along the shoreline, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for all to enjoy. It’s a sight that fills us with awe and reminds us of the beauty that can be found in even the simplest moments. As we immerse ourselves in these festivities, let us not forget that beyond all the glitz and glamour lies something deeper - an opportunity to connect with one another on a more profound level. It’s about spreading love, kindness, and generosity throughout our coastal community. So as you embark on your own holiday celebrations this year, take a moment to appreciate not only the sparkle but also embrace what truly matters - family, friends, and making memories that will last a lifetime. We at Social Coastal wish you a joyful holiday season filled with love, peace, and happiness.

hen Hurricane Frederick destroyed his home in 1979, Leonard Kaiser took the challenge and decided it was an opportunity to do something new. With his newly minted real estate license, the resourceful 29-year-old took his short two years in the industry and founded Kaiser Realty, Inc. “I saw the opportunities that would be available following the storm and knew the future potential for our area in real estate development and vacation rentals,” he says. I have certainly witnessed the amazing growth of our area and the real estate industry over the last 46 years.” That amazing growth and many years of hard work brought with it incredible success to Kaiser Realty, Inc. In fact, under Kaiser’s expertise, dedication, and determination, the firm became one of the area’s largest vacation rental, property management, and real estate sales companies. As they often do, growth and success brought change. In December 2012, Wyndham Vacation Rentals acquired the vacation rental and association management divisions of the company. Four years later, Leonard transitioned the real estate sales side of the business into Kaiser Sotheby’s International Realty. “In 2016, my two oldest daughters, Andrea Kaiser Shilston and Erin Kaiser—both of whom are Realtors involved in our company—joined me in a search for a franchise that would share our established company culture and our goal to grow through quality, not quantity. As a renowned global brand, Sotheby’s International Realty sets the industry standards for giving agents the state-of-the-art tools they need to be successful in our dynamic real estate market.”

Then, in 2021, Kaiser, along with his brother Glen, introduced Kaiser Vacation Rentals, Inc., as a property management company specializing in the rental and management of luxury vacation homes on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Clearly, the firm has let no grass grow under its feet—and the success that has come of that determination never to be complacent has only served to make Kaiser more dedicated to the brand image and the company culture. “I have worked to build a reputation as a trusted, honest businessperson with a genuinely caring attitude for other people’s success,” Kaiser says. “I have always surrounded myself with people who have shared my passion for doing the right things for the right reasons and putting our clients and customers first.”

“By building this company with genuinely good people and giving them the support to grow and learn, we’ve been respected in the real estate industry and the local community for over 43 years,” Kaiser goes on. “I believe our success and reputation has been gained through our honesty and transparency in all of our endeavors and simply treating people as we would like to be treated.” As a native of Baldwin County, Kaiser has a natural love of the community, and that love has instilled in him a desire to give back—both professionally and personally—through his involvement in the organizations that serve it. “I have been involved with many facets of the tourism industry and have served on the board for Gulf Shores/Orange Beach tourism as a long-time member as well as its chairman for five consecutive years,” says Kaiser, who is also known as a skilled real estate developer, particularly for the residential communities of Cottages on RomarBeach, Martyn Woods and Caswell. “I worked closely with many other community leaders to always help keep our focus on our area as a family vacation destination.” Kaiser has served multiple terms as Chairman of the Baldwin County Association of Realtors and as a State Director of The Alabama Association of Realtors. He has also served numerous terms as Chairman of the Alabama Gulf Coast Chamber, as a Regional Director for The American Heart Association, as Chairman of United Way of Baldwin County, and as a board member for the Coastal Alabama Partnership. He is a board member or the Alabama Insurance Underwriters Association and is also a member of The Kiwanis Club and The Knights of Columbus. “You engage in your community because it matters—not only for you and your family, but for generations to come,” Kaiser says. “To be involved in shaping the vision for the future of your community is an honor.” “I honestly enjoy what I do, being in real estate, vacation rental management and development, and that’s why I am still doing it today; however, family always comes first. I attribute much of my success to the involvement, love and support of my wife, Belinda. I feel very blessed! I like to spend time with my 3 daughters, Andrea, Erin and Shelby and their families, boating and watching sunsets on the bay. You might also catch me riding motorcycles and traveling too! “

GIFT THRIFT THE

By Liesel Schmidt Photos by Stephanie Q
THRIFT STORES have long been tied to community work, a means to provide goods to those in need and give second life to items that are no longer serving their original owner. When Island Church opened the doors of Share Stuff in December of 2008, it was with that mission of community outreach. Then, in 2012, the thrift store was rebranded as Island Thrift, a ministry of Island Church open to the public.
items of necessity such as clothes and shoes very reasonably— most are as low as $1.00 - $5.00—while pricing other items at approximately 25 to 50 percent of the retail price, depending on the quality of the item. Because of this, people can purchase needed or wanted items at great prices and feel good about where their money is going. It’s a win-win situation."
“The vision was to create a place where our community could donate items that are still have life but that are no longer needed by the donor,” says Tracey Litton, manager of Orange Beach-based Island Thrift. “It was also our goal to create a place where people in need could go to find good items at a reasonable price. We price
“In addition to that, it also is a place to serve our community,” Litton goes on. “We currently have over 20 volunteers who serve on various days and in a variety of ways. There is always a steady flow of donations that need sorting, checking, cleaning, pricing, hanging, dusting, selling, bagging, boxing, etc. We serve anywhere from >> DECEMBER/JANUARY 2024

60 to 200 customers per day in our short five-hour window! New volunteers are always needed because our traffic increases every year. Mainly and most importantly, it is a place to find the real solution to the greatest need of all humanity: Jesus. When a person needs prayer, we stop and pray; when they need encouragement, we speak life into them. We have lots of customers who come on their lunch break to listen to the encouraging music and have a little ‘guilt-free shopping’ therapy.” Donations are tax deductible and accepted Monday through Saturday, from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm. “We have a very high standard for items that make it to our shelves and racks, and nothing that is broken or damaged goes out on the floor,” says Litton. “All electronics and kitchen appliances are tested and cleaned. What doesn’t make the cut or has been here too long gets sent to other local ministries.
“Because we are so diligent about what we take, what we sell, and how we check everything, some of our regular customers have dubbed us the ‘Neiman Marcus of thrift stores,’” Litton continues. Consequently, Island Thrift has been voted one of the top ten thrift stores in Alabama by EverythingAL.com. “Although the majority of what we sell is clothing, we also accept all gently used household goods as well as some furniture,” Litton says. “Because we pay no cost of goods for our merchandise, we are in position to give away anything we have to those in need. The funds generated can be used to purchase items that are not regularly stocked at the thrift store such as gas or diapers—even electricity for someone who is in need of help paying their bill. After Hurricane Sally, our doors were open for three weeks, with donations coming from all over the country. We gave everything away at no charge to anyone who came in need, and Island Church and Island Thrift are proud to be part of the city of OB EMA plan.” As of October of 2023, Island Thrift has raised over $2 million for community benevolence and 22

world missions in the lifetime of the ministry. They also work closely with other local ministries to help reach as many as possible. Island Thrift is currently working through updating the exterior of the store with a new paint color, awnings, and all new signage. “As a ministry, our purpose and hope is to continually share the love of Christ in our community,” Litton says. “We hope people are blessed through every aspect of this store, whether it be by getting, giving, or serving. We look forward to being a part of what God is doing on this island for years to come.” For more information, visit theislandchurch.tv.

PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW
THE REEF MAKER By Liesel Schmidt
DAVID WALTER OF WALTER MARINE AND REEFMAKER
A
n artificial reef is exactly what it sounds like: a manmade structure that mimics some of the characteristics of a natural reef—chief among which are providing food and serving as a habitat for a variety of sea creatures that would otherwise lack these necessities. >> DECEMBER/JANUARY 2024
31
PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW
A little context on the matter: In 1986, the population of red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico was so low that almost none was being caught. The reasons for this were two-fold. “The northern Gulf of Mexico has a flat sandy bottom, with no rocks or coral reefs,” Walter explains. “Red snapper live on structure, and we had none. Also, there were no navigation devices available to locate reefs outside the site of land, which meant that fishermen couldn’t find the available populations of red snapper.”
As common as the concept has become, most of us would never consider it to be a business opportunity, but for David Walter, the need for artificial reefs was divine inspiration for not only a livelihood, but a legacy. “At the time, I owned a shipyard in Fairhope,” says Walter, who started Walter Marine as a boat repair business in 1968. “I purchased an old oil field vessel for $2500 because it was too good at that price to pass up. Then in 1986, some of my charter boat customers asked if I would convert the boat to build artificial reefs.”
32
SOCIAL COASTAL
Consequently, the king mackerel that lived on the surface were a much easier catch, which led to overfishing and the need for a limit to be placed in 1986. “At the same time, technology became available for fishermen to locate reefs. Then, Vernon Mitten of the Alabama Conservation Department and John Winn of the U.S Army Corps of Engineers partnered together to create the largest artificial reef zone in the world offshore of Alabama. “Alabama’s reef zone allowed anyone wishing to build a private reef to do so with a simple permit acquired in one day for a modest permit fee,” Walter continues. “It’s the only true private reef program in
the world, and because of this, local fishermen got busy building reefs, using platforms hastily constructed on the back of their boats. Orange Beach went from a sleepy little fishing village with 12 charter boats to the number one fishing destination in the Gulf of Mexico, with 120 charter boats. As I entered the picture, it was much less hassle for the fishermen to hire me, and my business of building artificial reefs began to grow.” So Walter’s artificial reef company, Reefmaker, was born. And born to success. In fact, recent studies have shown that, for every dollar spent on artificial reefs $131 was poured back into the local economy. “Almost all the red snapper populating the Gulf of Mexico is a result of the oil platforms and artificial reefs,” Walter notes. Clearly, Walter’s company has done what he envisioned: build back the red snapper population and bolster the local economy as well as the richness of the sea life offshore of Alabama. Still, Walter is modest about what he has done. “I don’t feel I have accomplished anything. I worked at a business I turned over to my Lord and Savior and watched as it overcame impossible odds to become the largest artificial reef company in the Americas and maybe the world,” he maintains. “There has been so many times I was on the brink of bankruptcy and at the last minute a miracle would happen. I just held on for the ride. “I was blessed to have a son who wishes to take the reins and ride into the future,” he goes on. “I think too many businesses begin to ride a good wave and forget that same old wave will eventually end. We have the best fishing reef product in the world, but it could always be better.” Walter is a frequent guest of local schools and organizations, giving speeches on the benefits of artificial reefs. He and his wife have raised two sons and a daughter between them. DECEMBER/JANUARY 2024

LEEANN LEITERMAN JONES Years ago I found art to be my therapy through a rough time in my life. Specializing in one-of-a-kind creations, I started with leaf castings or the term, Hypertufa. I perfected my method to make castings and from that I made the first “Bama Leaves" by mixing Elephant Ears and the Alabama "A" to create unique centerpieces and water features. I taught myself to weld and started exploring other types of art by repurposing metal finds into beautiful pieces with real personalities. I have won several awards for my art pieces. Best of Show at the 50th Annual Art in the Park, Chamber Award at Ballyhoo, and a 16ft metal sculpture, "Big Guy", was recognized in America's Roadside Attractions. ompleted in December of 2022, the Ziegler home in Perdido Key may not have had much time for its walls to weather or its floors to show the wear of years, but owners Sherri and Joey have still made memories in their year of living there, celebrating their first Christmas and soaking in the sight of the sunrises and sunsets as they wash over the sky.
“They are stunning,” says Sherri, a real estate agent with Levin Rinke Realty, while Joey is the mortgage manager for Regions Mortgage in Pensacola. “It’s very relaxing and peaceful here, and we truly love everything about it. Continuing the theme, the porch ceilings are ebony stained tongue and groove, with matching Bahama shutters and corbels that add to the West Indies look of the home, while gas lanterns on the front porch give the home a hint of Southern charm. “The overall design of the home is striking to people, and the location of it being situated on the intercoastal waterway overlooking Johnson's Beach with Gulf views and on a private canal in Grande Lagoon make it even more special,” says Sherri. “We love the water and enjoy boating, which is why we were so interested in this particular location. The proximity to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and also Pensacola by boat, played a large part, as well. It's a plus that we get to see the Blue Angels fly from our back porch when they have a show or practice their maneuvers.”

It’s very relaxing and peaceful here, and we truly love everything about it.”
Inside, the interior has a modern flare, created by Sherri’s vision and the expertise of V Home & Interiors in Mandeville. “They helped us in selecting the furnishings and lighting for our bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen,” she says. “They offer beautiful furnishings and accessories and are very knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. This home is made up of everything that we both love and enjoy.” A particular favorite in the house is the “man cave”—which, according to Sherri, was the inspiration for the color scheme throughout the home. “I wanted a masculine, speak-easy vibe that is warm and inviting.” With its charcoal walls, raw wood coffered ceilings, white oak flooring and massive chandelier, the room is precisely that—masculine in feel without being intimidatingly so, rather feeling cozy in its monochromatism and elegant finishes. “I knew I wanted to paint the space black before we even built the home,” Sherri explains. “Once the room was painted, it created the theme for the interior. There is a touch of black in each room of the home.”

Indeed, it does, though black features were artfully chosen for each space in a way that keeps the color from being overwhelming or heavy. In the kitchen, white custom cabinetry traces along the back wall of the space, juxtaposing a coal black center island and matching cabinetry on a perpendicular wall. Calacatta Trevi quartz countertops with full height splash add a cool sleekness, contrasted by a suite of ZLine appliances in black stainless with champagne bronze accents and a black stainless-steel sink. “We love the layout and open design of the kitchen,” says Sherri. “The large island makes cooking and entertaining so much fun.”
The butler's pantry and laundry rooms are additional favorite spaces in the house, respectively making morning wake ups easier with a built-in Wolf Coffee System and laundry tasks just a little less tedious. “I wanted a fun space in the laundry room and love how the tile design turned out,” says Sherri. “We carried that theme into the butler's pantry, bringing in warmth with the walnut countertop, and having all of the storage is a plus.”

SOCIAL LIVING
In the master bedroom, a tongue and groove vaulted ceiling overhead seems purposefully incongruous to an opulent chandelier. “The chandelier is my favorite thing in the room, and it really helps to create that romantic atmosphere,” says Sherri. An adjoining sitting area with a vaulted ceiling and a bank of windows offer the perfect space to read or enjoy the view. The master closet was designed to meet the couple’s specific needs, complete with a large island with hidden doors for laundry hampers. In the master bath, large format black veined marble tile flows into a walk-in shower, and a window offers natural light just above the freestanding tub. “We really enjoy the view while we’re getting ready,” says Sherri. “It’s really peaceful.”

Mary Beth Graves became a mother at the age of 35, having to learn the ropes quickly as she helped raise two boys, aged five and six, and balance her new family with a fulltime job. “At the time, I was working at a walk-in clinic where I managed the industrial medicine department,” says Graves, who moved to Baton Rouge from her home state of Colorado in the early ’90s. “Working full time while learning to be a full-time parent added new challenges to my work and home life. Learning to juggle raising two boys and caring for a home had its struggles, but it definitely had more rewards.” Four years later, in 2005, Graves and her husband welcomed a baby girl. She continued to work for another six months on a full-time basis before deciding to work part-time. Then, in 2011, the family moved to Orange Beach, where life drastically changed again after they opened their own business, Island Time Daiquiris. “We had to do a build before we could open, and we all worked together, with the kids helping in cleaning and painting, to get it ready,” Graves recalls. “When we opened, I worked at ITD behind the scenes,

cleaning, running errands, and doing other tasks that needed to be done. As busy as it kept us, I think that working while the kids were young helped them to see what it means to work hard for your family and that things don’t come quick and easy.” Grave’s example of dedication to her family came full circle in 2016, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy. “My daughter, at the age of 11, would drain my tubes and record my output,” she recalls. “She, along with my husband, also did the household chores and the laundry. I had several setbacks and complications after my mastectomy, and without my daughter and my husband to help me, things would’ve been difficult to handle. I have been so proud of how she handled this situation and the courage she had to deal with everything going on.” As a mother, Graves has found much to be proud of in her children. “Watching my kids grow into young adults has given me great joy,” she says. “My oldest decided right after he graduated from high school to go into the Army Reserve because he wanted to pay for college on his own. He now is married with two little girls and has his nursing license. My middle one worked odd jobs and now works at ITD for us. My youngest is graduating OBHS this May and is planning on going to Auburn next fall. My kids have taught me that, even if you all are raised in the same household, everyone still has their own ways of learning and growing. I’ve also learned from my daughter that you can look up how to fix just about anything on the internet. 54

“About six months ago, my husband and I were out of town for a few days,” she goes on. “My daughter called our first day gone and said that the kitchen sink wasn’t draining, and running the garbage disposal wasn’t helping. We told her to try Drano and leave it until we got back. When we got home, we were surprised to see that there wasn’t any water standing in the sink. When our daughter got home from school, we asked her if the Drano worked. She said that she’d looked up on YouTube what to do, so she pulled the horizontal pipe off and found a plastic knife that had gotten stuck in it, causing the clog. That is the kind of daughter I raised, and the kind of kids I have. They are so capable and so motivated. I’m so proud of them, and I’m incredibly proud to be their mother.”

Sarah Morgan had just moved back to her hometown in Baldwin Country in 2021 when she took a trip to Houston, Texas, to visit a friend. …and three weeks later, Blake Broussard was meeting Sarah at the half-way point of New Orleans, Louisiana, for their first official date. Nine months passed, and the stars aligned again to change the couple’s lives forever—in one perfect moment. “Blake had purchased my engagement ring in June and was planning the perfect moment to pop the question,” says Sarah. “He held on to it for two months, and then, on August 4, 2022, I decided to take a pregnancy test after having felt ill for a few days. The test came up positive, and I rushed upstairs to Blake’s home office to tell him the exciting news. At that same moment, he reached into his desk drawer, pulled out the ring box and got down on one knee.” Another perfect moment was created on November 4, 2023, when Sarah dressed in a form-fitting lace gown with a detachable overskirt to walk down the aisle at The Veranda at The Preserve in Elberta, Alabama, and exchange vows with Blake—for the second time. “Blake and I had actually gotten married at our local courthouse in Houston, Texas, one year prior in 2022,” explains Sarah. “Still, we wanted a celebration with family and friends, so the ceremony was a vow renewal, and we had our seven-monthold daughter, Lemon, as one of our five flower girls. preformed a beautiful ceremony. My maid-of-honor and best friend, Jordan Capers, was also our wedding planner and coordinator through her company Cloud Nine Design Agency, and she put together the wedding of our dreams. We really wanted our focus to be on bringing all our closest friends and family together for a grand celebration.” And celebrate, they did. After being pronounced married, they joined their guests for an on-site reception that had more than a few special touches. “We had desserts unique to Blake’s home state of Louisiana by offering fresh beignets,” Sarah recalls. “The band, The Funky Lampshades, played our favorite soul music throughout the night, and we rented a white bounce castle to entertain the many children that were in attendance. We also had a live painter, Anna Grantham, paint guest portraits of all guests as a party favor.” After dining on a variety of food that reflected their respective Cajun and Gulf Coast upbringings, the couple cut into a masterfully made two-tier vanilla cake with almond buttercream, surround by a ring of 50 roses of alternating heights, created by their caterer, Stephanie Houston of Custom Catering by Stephanie. Having reached the end of the festivities, the newlyweds were sent off to their honeymoon at The Grand Hotel >>

Blake and his family were also there during the same years to celebrate their Thanksgiving holidays.
