JONI BLALOCK’S LEGACY OF DEDICATION AND PROGRESS

For the past two decades, the residents of Orange Beach have benefited immensely from the dedicated leadership of Joni Blalock. Serving on the City Council since 2004, Joni has navigated numerous challenges and triumphs, always with the city’s best interests at heart.

Joni’s decision to run for office was driven by a sense of unheeded concern within the community. “I was concerned about things going on within the City and felt like residents concerns were not being heard,” she recalls. This resolve led her to take a leap of faith and commit herself to public service.

Before entering politics, Joni had a fulfilling career as a counselor and social worker for 24 years. This background provided her with a deep understanding

of human needs and community dynamics. Following her election, she balanced her council duties with various sales positions, currently working at Perdido Beach Resort, maintaining a strong connection to the local economy.

Joni’s political journey has seen its share of adversity and achievement. From hurricanes and oil spills to economic downturns, the trials faced by Orange Beach have tested the community’s resilience. Yet, these difficulties have underscored its strength and unity. Over the past 20 years, the city’s growth in budget, resources, employment, and facilities is a testament to effective governance and communal effort.

Balancing growth with the quality of life for residents remains a perpetual challenge. Joni acknowledges the diverse perspectives on development, from preservationists to progress advocates. Navigating these varied viewpoints is crucial to ensuring that Orange Beach retains its charm while evolving to meet contemporary needs.

Joni’s service is marked by numerous accomplishments that have significantly improved community life. The creation of the Orange Beach Event Center and Art Center, the establishment of the City School System, and the development of various city facilities and programs highlight her tangible impact. Her involvement in the Library Board, founding the Dog Park, and wildlife program initiatives further illustrate her commitment to enhancing community life and protecting the environment.

Recognition from constituents, who continually re-elect her, serves as a profound source of pride. This trust underscores their belief that her agenda aligns with the city’s best interests. Collaborative relationships with the Mayor and fellow council members have been crucial in steering Orange Beach through recent challenges, focusing on immediate needs and long-term well-being.

Beyond public service, Joni’s personal life revolves around family and cherished hobbies. As a mother of four and grandmother of soon-tobe five, family time is precious. Raised in Birmingham and an alumna of the University of Alabama, Joni’s roots are deep in Alabama’s rich culture, from attending football games to enjoying local pastimes like gardening, traveling, and fishing.

Having lived in Orange Beach for nearly 40 years, Joni has witnessed and contributed to the city’s transformation and growth. Her dedication has helped shape a vibrant community where both residents and visitors can enjoy a high quality of life. With a continued focus on environmental stewardship and community enhancement, the future of Orange Beach looks bright under Joni Blalock’s steadfast leadership.

Through the Spirit of EXIT Charitable Program, EXIT Realty Corp put on an evening of 80’s entertainment benefitting Miracle League of Coastal Alabama’s efforts to build a community playground and ball field for special needs children in Baldwin County took place. Attendees donned acid-washed jeans, blue eyeliner, and teased hair, partying the night away.

POWER Couple

How did the two of you meet?

It's a pretty funny story actually, If you are close to us you already know. It involves a poker table, a pink wig, and a 2-year Proclamation to someone else that eventually became true.

What strengths do each of you have that makes you a dynamic duo or power couple?

We are sort of Yin and Yang. We create this harmonious environment that allows each of us to breathe life into our business and team in our way. I am a bit boisterous and outgoing, so naturally, I handle the sales end of the business. Danielle is “the creative”, she is a master designer and uses those skills in everything she does. She is thoughtful and particular, with a keen eye and extreme attention to detail. It works well for us, I keep her from getting bogged down in the details and she reels me in when I start going in too many directions at once.

FRANCES HOLK-JONES

Frances Holk-Jones, alongside her late husband Neal Moore, founded the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation to honor their daughter, Jennifer Claire Moore. Her bright spirit

continues to inspire their mission in Baldwin County, promoting mental health and well-being among youth through various programs and initiatives.

The Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation is committed to creating a compassionate community where mental health is normalized, and seeking help is seen as a strength.

One cornerstone of the foundation is the Peer Helpers PLUS Program, which trains students to offer support and guidance to their peers. This initiative not only creates a supportive school environment but also equips young people with essential skills to navigate life's challenges. Inspired by Jennifer's memory, the foundation strives to provide resources that Jennifer might have benefited from, ensuring no young person feels alone or unsupported.

The impact of Peer Helpers is seen in countless success stories where they've offered essential support to their peers. The Foundation aims to create a safety net for young people, hoping to prevent tragedies like the one faced by the Moore family with Jennifer's death. If such resources had been available then, it might have made a difference in Jennifer's life.

The impact of their work is evident in numerous success stories. For example, a Peer Helper once assisted a student struggling with severe anxiety, helping them integrate into a new school environment and regain confidence. Such instances highlight the profound effect peer support can have in building resilience and stability among youth.

Despite their successes, the foundation faces ongoing challenges, particularly combating the

stigma surrounding mental health. Frances emphasizes the importance of education and open dialogue to dismantle these barriers, advocating for a community where mental health is prioritized as much as physical well-being.

Community involvement is crucial to their mission's success. Support from volunteers and local businesses has enabled the foundation to expand its reach across Baldwin County, introducing vital mental health resources into more schools and communities. Events like their annual rodeo fundraiser are essential for raising awareness and funds.

Looking forward, Frances envisions a future where every young person feels empowered and supported, equipped with the skills to thrive despite life's challenges. Partnering with local organizations and businesses has been instrumental in achieving this vision, amplifying their impact and outreach.

As they continue their journey, the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation remains committed to creating a compassionate community where mental health is normalized, and seeking help is seen as a strength. Their goal is clear: to

foster a generation of resilient youth who are equipped to face the future with confidence and empathy, ensuring Jennifer's legacy of compassion lives on in the hearts and minds of Baldwin County's youth.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR,

ORANGE BEACH HIGH SCHOOL

BUILDING A CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE

Shane Alexander graduated from Hartselle High School in 1986, where his basketball coach, Don Pouncey, frequently suggested that Shane would make a great coach once his playing days were over. Initially dismissing the idea, Shane reconsidered a few years after finishing junior college. Returning to his high school, he spoke with Coach Pouncey, who reiterated his belief in Shane’s potential as a coach. Determined to pursue this path, Shane sought a way to fund the remaining years of his education and decided to enlist in the Army, where he spent three years overseas. These years abroad taught him invaluable lessons in leadership and self-discovery, fueling his determination to complete his education and enter the coaching field.

Upon his return, Shane graduated from the University of South Alabama and was fortunate enough to be hired by his alma mater, where he worked under the very coach who had inspired him. After 21 years at Hartselle, Shane made a pivotal decision to move to Orange Beach and help establish a new softball program at the newly opened school in 2019. His former principal, Dr. Robbie Smith, had moved to Orange Beach and offered Shane the opportunity to join her in this new venture.

Under Shane’s leadership, the Orange Beach High School softball team flourished. They won State Championships consecutively from 2021 to 2023. In 2024, they started the season strong with 34 straight wins, earning national recognition. Their hard work culminated in a 46-1 record and their fourth straight State Championship. Shortly after, they were crowned the MaxPreps National Champions for 2024.

Throughout the season, Shane fostered a culture of resilience and focus, emphasizing the importance of staying positive and encouraging. His team thrived in high-stakes games, viewing them as opportunities for growth. Shane also instilled in them a mindset of independence and problem-solving, often reminding them to “figure it out.”

Beyond the championships, Shane’s goal was to impact his players’ lives positively, teaching them valuable life lessons through the sport. He advised aspiring coaches to prioritize their players’ development, build strong relationships, and surround themselves with dedicated assistant coaches. This approach, Shane believed, was key to building a successful and cohesive team.

TownsendAnne Tyler &

Aswell-meaning as they may be, friend “fixups” don’t always pan out…but that was not the case for Anne Townsend Froemming and Tyler Love when they met in 2019 after months of their friends trying to make a meeting happen. “We both went to meet some mutual friends at a brewery in Birmingham,” says Anne Townsend. “Our friends pulled up two chairs at a table and made us sit next to each other. While all eyes were on us, I felt like conversation would be awkward and we would never go on an actual date. Boy, was I wrong. Within a few days of meeting, we went on our first date.”

Years passed, and the couple knew that theirs was a story meant to end with forever. “Tyler had planned a big family trip for both our families out to Oregon, and he, along with our party planner extraordinaire, Alexis, planned an amazing winery tour in Willamette Valley,” Anne Townsend recalls. “We boarded a big party bus and set out for the first winery. Tyler was pouring buckets of sweat the entire time, but I assumed he was hot like always. After finally making it, we sat for a delicious wine tasting and appetizers at the beautiful Stoller Winery. Harrison, Tyler’s twin brother, suggested we head outside for a family photo. After turning around to see that no one else followed, I quickly realized what was about to happen. Tyler dropped to one knee and said something beautiful—though I can’t remember because I think I blacked out from shock—followed by, ‘Will you marry me?’”

A few months later, Anne Townsend’s words to Tyler were much more eloquent than the “Uh huh” that she gave as a response to his proposal, when she met him at the altar on June 24, 2023, wearing a strapless gown with a double lace overlay to exchange vows. Surrounded by their loved ones, the couple were pronounced married at The Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa before joining their guests for an onsite reception.

There were, of course, some very memorable moments: “Wheelbarrow dance walks, handstands on stage, my cousin tearing it up with a scooter on the dance floor…We even had a couple wedding crashers!” Anne Townsend says with a laugh.

The party commenced with dining, dancing and—of course—cake. Created by Couture Cakes, the bride’s cake boasted three tiers of the bakery’s signature flavor sponge, with buttercream icing with strawberries, enrobed in white and adorned with green leaves and white flowers. As a nod to his time playing football for the University of Alabama and his membership on two National Championship teams, Tyler’s groom’s cake was made of chocolate sponge, fashioned to look like Nick Saban’s famous straw hat and an Alabama football helmet.

After being sent off to start their life as newlyweds, Anne Townsend and Tyler had their honeymoon in Portugal to look forward to. “We delayed until September, which was a great time to be there,” says Anne Townsend. Home now in Birmingham, the couple are happy for those two chairs in that brewery where everything changed forever.
