SOCIAL COASTAL

From the Editor

We’re excited to bring you our All About Home issue, featuring local professionals who help our neighbors love where they live.

We’re grateful to the Baldwin County Home Builders Association (BCHBA) for their positive impact on our community. Through scholarships in construction, workforce development, disaster recovery, and housing for first responders and veterans, the BCHBA Charitable Foundation works to enhance lives across Baldwin County and beyond. This month, we’re honored to spotlight Chris Farlow, President of the BCHBA Charitable Foundation, in our Community Leader feature.

Fall is in full swing, and we’ve enjoyed joining in local seasonal celebrations like the Foley Witches Ride. As always, the Gulf Coast has recently played host to exciting events for food lovers, including Experience the Oyster and Chicago Street Supper Club, both of which we’re pleased to feature in this issue. Congratulations to Baldwin Health on its impressive expansion, which has increased capacity and services for our area. Be sure to check out our coverage of the ribbon cutting for the health system’s new surgery and patient tower.

We hope you enjoy this issue’s features and community highlights. Be sure to pick up our January issue, and from all of us at Social Magazines, happy holidays and a wonderful new year!

Now in its third year, Experience the Oyster has continued to evolve while preserving an intimate atmosphere. Initially a small-scale festival, the event has since attracted increasingly notable culinary talent. Jennifer Russell of Murder Point Oysters shared, "We were thrilled to welcome acclaimed chefs like Stephanie Izard, Cody and Samantha Carroll, Joseph Bonavita, and Sophina Uong. Building on last year's addition of a VIP Friday night dinner, this lineup brought an exciting depth of culinary artistry to the weekend.

The inspiration for Experience the Oyster came from the vibrant South Beach Food and Wine Festival, whose small setting and high culinary standards set the tone for our own. "We wanted to showcase Gulf Coast oysters and the South’s outstanding chefs," Jennifer explained. “There’s so much expertise here, and our oysters can hold their own on any stage.” She emphasized the diversity of culinary approaches that bring depth to the event, noting that showcasing regional flavors highlights the techniques— from roasting to raw—that make Gulf seafood so beloved.

Guests enjoyed an array of creative oyster dishes, from oyster stew to fried oysters topped with caviar. "The creativity of these chefs is always my favorite part of this event,” Jennifer said. “They always bring the absolute best to the table.”

This spotlight on Murder Point Oysters reflects a deep commitment to quality. "We’re one of the only farms with a hatchery, and from conception to plate, no one touches our oysters but us," Jennifer shared. “We are a family that has been working the Gulf Coast waters for five generations, so we know the Gulf waters well and apply that knowledge to what we do each day.”

For non-oyster fans, there were options like gumbo and étouffée, along with a full menu at The Hangout, ensuring every guest enjoyed the Gulf’s rich flavors and hospitality.

Experience the Oyster presented by Murder Point Oysters returned to The Hangout for a weekend filled with unforgettable culinary delights and entertainment! Guests enjoyed live music, hand-crafted cocktails, and chef demos, along with a big-screen football experience. The highlight, of course, was feasting on raw and cooked oysters, gumbo, and more Gulf Coast flavors in this celebration of all things oyster.

Murder Point Oyster Co is a family-owned business committed to bringing you the best oysters LOVE can craft. For the last five generations we have made a living working the natural resources of the Gulf of Mexico. From catching shrimp or fish to raising Love crafted oysters our experience on the water allows us to be the best at what we do. Now we get to share that passion with you.

Murder Points are exclusively grown in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico using a long line method developed in Australia. Our oysters are spawned from the species Crassostrea virginica, also known as the Eastern/American oyster. Murder Point Oysters thrive in the unique conditions off Alabama’s coastline, which produces a full, rich, creamy taste with a light metallic finish and a drop of butter flavor in each one. There are many elements that can affect an oyster’s outcome, but here at Murder Point we know the most important element is LOVE.

VIP KICKOFF

Experience the Oyster kicked off with an exclusive event featuring a Murder Point oyster bar, gourmet appetizers, and a selection of beer and wine. Guests mingled with chefs and oyster farmers from all over the Southeast, gaining insight into the region’s rich oyster culture. Make-A-Wish Alabama is a dedicated chapter of the national Make-AWish organization, with a mission to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Since its founding, the Alabama chapter has granted over 1,500 wishes, covering all 67 counties across the state. Through the power of a wish, the organization helps children build emotional and physical strength, which can be crucial in their battle against serious illnesses.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Make-A-Wish Alabama is its deep connection to the local community. While part of a broader national network, the chapter operates independently with its own board of directors, staff, and volunteers. All donations and funds raised go directly to supporting wish kids in Alabama, ensuring that the resources benefit the children and families in the state.

The organization’s primary focus is granting wishes. Each wish has a profound impact, often marking a pivotal moment in a child's treatment journey. Medical professionals frequently observe that wishes work hand-in-hand with traditional treatments, offering children the emotional strength and hope needed to fight their illnesses. Last year alone, Make-A-Wish Alabama granted 215 wishes, bringing joy and hope to hundreds of families.

The origins of Make-A-Wish date back to 1980 when a seven-year-old boy named Christopher Greicius, who was battling leukemia, had his wish to become a police officer fulfilled. This one wish sparked a movement that has now granted more than 330,000 wishes across the U.S., including those in Alabama since the chapter became independent in 2012.

Make-A-Wish Alabama has witnessed countless heartwarming stories that demonstrate the profound effect of wishes. For instance, in October, a wish kid named Melody, who was a saxophonist before being diagnosed with cancer, wished for her high school band to receive new uniforms. Her wish came true at a Reeltown High School football game, where the band performed in their new uniforms, each adorned with a special symbol designed by Melody’s brother. This wish, filled with love and community spirit, will resonate for years to come.

Despite its successes, the organization faces significant challenges. As medical advancements allow more children to be diagnosed early, more qualify for a wish. However, resources are limited, and for every wish granted, there are two more children waiting. Ensuring that all eligible children in Alabama, particularly in rural areas, receive a wish remains a top priority.

Make-A-Wish Alabama invites the community to get involved through donations, volunteering, and participating in events like the Trailblaze Challenge and Wish Nights, which raise funds and awareness for this life-changing cause.

KIDS WIN FISHING TOURNAMENT

Now in its fourth year, the Kids Win Fishing Tournament at The Wharf offers young anglers of all skill levels an opportunity to fish for a great cause. This exciting event presented by Rouses Markets supports Make-A-Wish Alabama and this year, celebrated wish kid Brice. Entrants enjoyed kids’ activities, snacks and drinks courtesy of Rouses Markets and Bryant Bank during the weigh-ins in Marlin Circle.

NATIONAL SHRIMP FESTIVAL

The Annual National Shrimp Festival is a Gulf Coast tradition celebrating all things seafood! Attendees enjoy a culinary feast with over 50 local and regional vendors serving up crab cakes, conch fritters, lobster, Cajun pistols, and, of course, fresh Gulf shrimp prepared in every way imaginable— boiled, fried, steamed, and more. While shrimp is the star of the show, there’s so much more to savor at this food-focused festival.

for change JUDGE MICHELLE THOMASON

Judge Michelle Thomason, a dedicated leader in the Baldwin County legal community, is the driving force behind the Baldwin County Veterans Treatment Court. With a diverse background that includes a degree in business from the University of Mobile, over a decade of banking experience, and over 18 years on the bench, Judge Thomason embodies a unique blend of skills and compassion that sets her apart.

Judge Thomason spent more than ten years in banking, working full time in that field while pursuing her college degree. With a family at home in Daphne, she earned her Juris Doctor from Tulane Law School in New Orleans in 1995. She was a partner in a law firm where she specialized in civil litigation and family law for over eleven years. In 2006, she took the bench and quickly established herself as one of the busiest judges in the state, managing an astonishing docket that includes family law cases as well as civil, criminal, and traffic matters. Even with her district court having the highest volume of cases in the state, Judge Thomason has always made judicial education a priority, both in teaching and in learning, and currently has the highest number of education hours of any judge in the history of the Alabama judicial system.

Beyond her judicial responsibilities, Judge Thomason is deeply involved in the community. She is in her second year as President of the Fairhope Sunset Rotary, having been a Rotarian for 17 years, and is a Paul Harris Fellow. She is also a member of Impact 100 and other organizations, taking on various leadership roles to effect positive change.

The Baldwin County Veterans Treatment Court, initiated by Judge Thomason, stands as a testament to her commitment to helping those who have served our country. Recognizing that being involved in the court system often signifies a deviation from the right path, the Court focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment, providing a supportive environment where veterans can receive the help they need surrounded by those who care about their well-being and success.

UNDER HER LEADERSHIP, THE COURT CONTINUES TO BE A BEACON OF HOPE FOR VETERANS SEEKING A NEW BEGINNING.

KRISTIE WHEELES

Growing up on the Alabama Gulf Coast has been an unforgettable experience for this Baldwin County native. As a lifelong resident of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, Kristie Wheeles has seen her beloved community grow, but still believes it’s an amazing place to raise her family. Now a Real Estate Broker and Karate School Owner, she balances two businesses with motherhood, all while deeply investing in the community she calls home.

She and her husband, Chris, have two daughters, Nevaeh (19) and Kai (13), and two dogs, Romie and Michelle. As a mother, she focuses on creating meaningful memories with her children, establishing special traditions they will always treasure. One of their favorites is waking up to a cupcake on their birthday—two cupcakes when they hit double digits! She also picks out an ornament each year that represents what they love most at that time, often quirky and tacky, but always a fun reflection of their interests.

Her career in real estate began in 2005, working in short-term rentals and association management. She loves helping people with their biggest investment—finding a home. Real estate also gives her the flexibility to be present for her daughters’ important events, something she prioritizes. Overcoming the odds as a teen mom, she hopes her children will look back and remember how hard she worked to defy statistics, while always pouring love into their community.

Balancing work and motherhood can be hectic at times, but she believes her girls will see the value of hard work and consistency. They keep her accountable, asking if she’s hit her goals or made her calls for the day—motivation that comes straight from the heart. Over the past two years, she’s experienced many proud moments as years of sacrifice have begun to pay off. Her children are her driving force, and she aims to set a strong example of resilience and perseverance for them.

Passionate about giving back, she has spearheaded several community events and fundraisers, including paying off school lunch accounts, organizing free haircuts and school supply drives, and raising funds for families in need. She also established scholarships at Gulf Shores High School and the University of Alabama and worked alongside the City of Gulf Shores on various events. As a 13-year PTO member, her most cherished project is the “Draw Your Dream Home” competition for 3rd to 5th graders, encouraging them to dream big about their future.

With 14 years in the karate business, she has watched many of her students grow and thrive. Seeing them graduate and go on to accomplish great things is the ultimate reward.

ITALIAN BRACIOLE

INGREDIENTS

:

2 1/2 lbs Mason Hills Farm ribeye steak

3-4 cloves garlic

1 small shallot

2 tbsp fresh parsley

1 tsp basil

2 tbsp olive oil

4 ounces thinly sliced prosciutto

4 ounces thinly sliced provolone cheese

salt and pepper to taste

Combine garlic, shallot, parsley, basil, and olive oil in a small bowl. Butterfly and pound the Mason Hills Farm ribeye steak into 2 thin rectangles. Spread the herb mixture evenly over the surface of the steak. Place the prosciutto and provolone cheese evenly over the steak, leaving a one-inch border along the top edge. Roll the steak into a tight log, starting from the bottom edge and moving towards the top. Place it seam-side down on a cutting board. Secure the steak roll with kitchen twine, tying it at one-inch intervals. Use a sharp knife to slice the roll between the twine into 1-inch-thick pinwheels. Season with salt and black pepper. Skewer each pinwheel with a toothpick. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Brown the pinwheels in a preheated cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat for about 3 minutes on each side. Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until the steak reaches the desired doneness. Remove from the oven, tent with aluminum foil, and let it rest for 5 minutes. Remove the twine and toothpicks before serving the delicious Mason Hills Farm Italian with your favorite sides.

As you prepare this recipe in your kitchen, you are not just creating a delicious meal - you are continuing the journey that started right here on Mason Hills Farm. The flavors and quality of each ingredient reflect the care and attention that goes into every aspect of our farm-to-table process.

Grace Seth+

The love story of Grace Opal Christiansen and Seth Connor Jackson is one rooted in friendship, perseverance, and the beautiful growth that comes from shared dreams. On March 16, 2024, surrounded by family and friends, they promised forever to each other—just four days shy of the eight-year anniversary of their first date.

The pair first met in 2012 at Gulf Shores High School. Seth, a junior at the time, and Grace, a sophomore, became fast friends. They remained in touch after Seth graduated and life took them to different schools—Seth to the University of Alabama and Grace to the University of West Florida. After a text from Seth one Thanksgiving, their story took a new turn. Although their schedules didn’t align then, they made plans for winter break. A boat ride that holiday season turned into a day neither of them would forget, and from that point forward, they were inseparable.

The years that followed were filled with milestones and memories—Seth’s graduation from Alabama in 2017, both completing nursing degrees at UWF, and countless adventures. Traveling to Mexico and Honduras for scuba diving, moving in together, and sharing in the excitement of new careers as ER nurses—they faced life’s challenges hand in hand, always knowing their love was something special. In 2023, after seven years of dating, Seth decided it was time for their next chapter. Under the golden hues of a sunset at Maritime Park Pier, he proposed. Grace was so overwhelmed that she couldn’t believe it was real, exclaiming, "Shut up, you’re lying!" But it was very real—the love of her life wanted to spend forever with her.

Their wedding at the Veranda at the Preserve in Elberta, Alabama, was nothing short of magical. Grace, radiant in her ivory Justin Alexander gown, walked down the aisle surrounded by a romantic palette of ivory, black, green, gold, and champagne. The love from their guests filled the air, making the day feel intimate and deeply personal. After the ceremony, Grace kicked off her shoes and danced barefoot, enjoying the simple joy of being surrounded by those she loves most.

Their cake, a two-tier coconut delight with raspberry filling, bore the words “I love you more”—a sentiment they’ve always shared. After a delicious feast and a

night full of celebration, the couple whisked away to their honeymoon at Sandals South Coast in Jamaica.

Now, living in Pensacola, they dream of returning to Gulf Shores, the town where their love first bloomed, as they continue writing the next chapters of their life together.
