CHEF PETE BLOHME

Chef Pete Blohme, affectionately known as “Panini Pete,” has carved out a legacy in the culinary world by blending exceptional food, genuine hospitality, and a deep connection to community. As the visionary behind PP Hospitality Group, Pete operates half a dozen unique concepts, each showcasing his innovative approach to dining.

Among his standout ventures is Sunset Pointe, a “Gulf-to-table” gem on Mobile Bay’s Eastern Shore. Sunset Pointe was lauded as one of Alabama’s hottest new restaurants in 2015. Pete’s portfolio also includes Squid Ink Eclectic Eats & Drinks, a groundbreaking gastropub in downtown Mobile and The Waterfront in Daphne, blending bayfront dining with global flavors and live entertainment. Together with his business partner, Nick Dimario, the duo brings over 60 years of culinary expertise to the table, adhering to their mantra: “We put real food in our food, and we never met a stranger!”

Pete’s culinary journey began at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, New York. He remains deeply involved with his alma mater, serving on its Alumni Advisory Council and co-founding the “Run for Your Knives” Scholarship 5K to benefit current students.

His culinary expertise has earned him national acclaim. Featured on Food Network shows like Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and Guy’s Grocery Games, Pete has showcased his skills alongside Guy Fieri and other culinary stars. Yet, his most rewarding endeavor is as a founding member of The Messlords, a group of celebrity chefs who travel the globe cooking for U.S. troops. From aircraft carriers to bases all over the globe, Pete and his team boost morale with hearty meals and culinary training.

TOP CHEFS & RESTAURATEURS

RESTAURATEUR MASTER Joe

Since opening in March of 2009, Master Joe's has been the go-to for sushi lovers from all over South Alabama. With the addition of two additional concepts, Shanghai Cottage and Wok by d'Bay, Master Joe's Restaurant Group has options to please any palate.

What makes your restaurants special?

The sushi rolls are like a work of art, not only for the eyes but also the taste buds. I change sushi to make it like the culture by mixing American ingredients with the skills I learned while training to be a sushi master.

Can you describe the options your restaurants have to offer?

In addition to traditional and Americanized sushi, we also offer hibachi, traditional Chinese cuisine, poke bowls for those seeking lighter options, and more. Each restaurant has a full bar offering hand-crafted cocktails, beer, wine, and hot and cold sake.

Do you have a favorite entrée/dish?

It is too difficult to pick just one. We offer over 30 specialty rolls, and our menu is always evolving to include something new.

What do you love most about the Eastern Shore?

From our first visit, my wife, Karen, and I fell in love with the charm of Fairhope. I am thankful for this community that has supported us from the beginning.

What is one thing you hope people say about your restaurants?

We enjoy helping our guests navigate the many options they have to choose from to make the perfect selection, and we want them to leave feeling that we gave them a great experience, a great meal and they look forward to coming back to see us.

Taste of Rotary at The Wash House treated guests to a memorable evening with a cocktail hour, a gourmet meal, and a wine raffle. Over $41,000 was raised to support the Point Clear Rotary Club’s efforts in children’s causes, making this night of fine dining and fellowship a meaningful contribution to local causes.

Steve and Angie Coltharp purchased Jesse’s with a vision to make it the Gulf Coast’s premier steakhouse. Committed to quality, they serve unique dry and wet-aged steaks, bone-in cuts, and fresh fish daily.

Jesse’s Restaurant in Magnolia Springs operates in the historic Moore Brothers building, which has been a community cornerstone since the 1920s. Originally a general store offering everything from chicken feed to kerosene, it also served as a gathering place for residents. Groceries were delivered twice daily, and the adjacent post office, built in 1952, helped cement the store’s role as the heart of the village. Jesse King, who worked there for 60 years without missing a day, embodied its spirit.

After the store closed in 1993, Charlie and Janie Houser revived it in 1998 as Moore Brothers Village Market and later opened Jesse’s, a deli honoring the building’s legacy. In 2012, Steve and Angie Coltharp took over, maintaining its charm and sense of community. Today, Jesse’s remains a beloved restaurant, blending history a nd hospitality in the heart of Magnolia Springs.

How do you define culinary success?

Culinary success is when every guest leaves feeling they had an exceptional meal. We focus on every detail, using fresh, local, seasonal ingredients to craft our menu entirely from scratch. The key is FLAVOR! As a classic chef with 40 years of experience, I prioritize simple, traditional cooking with lots of herbs and seasonings. My recipes are the result of decades of refinement, and I’m always looking for ways to improve them.

Why is community important to you?

Community is central to R Bistro’s identity, especially in our new location. Being at the heart of a great community makes it easy for guests to stop by for drinks, dinner, or lunch on the patio. We strive to create a sense of belonging and connection, with daily happy hour from 3–5:30 to encourage everyone to gather and enjoy.

What makes R Bistro uniquely special?

With the creative touch of Hunter Bridges Interiors, we created a rustic, whimsical decor that adds character to every corner of this historic building. It’s warm, cozy, inviting and spacious. It’s perfect for gathering with friends, date nights, or enjoying live jazz and dancing. Sophisticated yet casual, R Bistro offers fine dining where everyone feels welcome—whether in shorts or dressed to the nines.

What sets R Bistro apart?

For sure, it’s “R” staff! We’re like a close family, and their dedication has been incredible during our first challenging year in a new location. As we celebrate our first anniversary, I’m proud of their passion, care, and love for serving. Come visit, and you’ll see exactly what makes them amazing!

The New Year often symbolizes hope, self-reflection, and fresh beginnings. Resolutions frequently focus on extreme diets, rigorous workouts, ambitious financial goals, or finding love. Yet, as the year progresses, these lofty aspirations can leave us feeling defeated, increasing anxiety, stress, and depression. Instead of chasing change, consider a resolution to love and understand yourself better—a mindset that could lead to something greater.

When setting resolutions for 2025, keep these tips in mind:

Reflect on past goals: Start by evaluating last year’s resolutions. Were they realistic and flexible? If they left you feeling inadequate, reframe your expectations. Avoid comparisons and celebrate your personal wins, big or small.

Prioritize self-care: Mental health improvements should include selfcare, often misunderstood as selfish. Practices like yoga, meditation, or journaling can deepen self-awareness and strengthen your connection to yourself. Journaling can also foster gratitude and reflection.

Practice patience and grace: Be kind to yourself and acknowledge progress, no matter how incremental. Remember, change isn’t linear. Avoid “all or nothing” thinking, which can derail goals. Focus on small, meaningful steps rather than the entire staircase.

Seek support: When in doubt, reach out. Family and friends can offer comfort and accountability, but a therapist or counselor provides a judgment-free space to explore deeper emotions. Give yourself the gift of being heard and supported in your journey toward mental and emotional well-being.

Cheers to 2025! May it be your healthiest, happiest, and most selfcompassionate year yet.

FMOM SUPER

or Angie Coltharp, life is a delicate dance of balancing family, faith, and two thriving businesses—Jesse’s Restaurant and Jesse’s on the Bay. Alongside her husband, Steve, Angie pours her heart into creating exceptional dining experiences while raising their five-year-old son, Asher.

Angie attributes much of her ability to juggle responsibilities to the outstanding leadership and team members at each location. “Jesse’s is like having two big families outside of my own,” she says. Her role as the disciplinarian keeps her engaged with the team, offering guidance and encouragement as needed. At home, however, Angie admits she’s a soft-hearted helicopter mom, often melting at Asher’s sweet apologies and “I love you, Momma.”

Steve plays a key role in their success, dividing time between locations so both can stay connected with their teams and guests. While their schedule is unpredictable, the

Coltharps cherish family getaways to 30A, where they enjoy fishing and beach time. These moments, Angie believes, help instill in Asher the values of love, generosity, and faith.

Being a working mom enriches Asher’s life in meaningful ways. “He gets to see me balance time, care for our home, and run a business,” Angie shares. She hopes this modeling helps Asher understand the importance of work ethic and gratitude. Jesse’s Restaurant is not just a business; it’s Angie’s passion. From the moment she set foot in the historic building, she felt called to make it her own. Relentlessly pursuing the opportunity, she finally realized her dream, starting small and working tirelessly to uphold the highest standards. Even now, Angie’s dedication to quality shines through in every detail, from sourcing premium meats to ensuring that each visit is memorable and meaningful for their guests.

Running multiple establishments hasn’t been without challenges. Balancing time between family and work became even harder after Asher’s arrival. But Angie credits her faith and support system with helping her improve daily.

“It took a hard lesson to learn balance,” she says, recalling a time when one location was unintentionally neglected. Today, she’s proud of the progress they’ve made and is committed to continuous improvement.

Angie’s achievements extend beyond the restaurants. At home, she cherishes hearing Asher’s loving words. At Christ the King School, she’s actively involved, crediting the school for nurturing Asher’s faith and social growth. She also finds joy in supporting events like the upcoming Saint’s Gala celebrating the school’s 75th anniversary, hoping to inspire more families to join the CTK community.

Through it all, Angie embodies true hospitality— whether at her restaurants or in her roles as a wife and mother. Her ability to balance so many demands is a testament to her passion, faith, and unwavering love for her family.

Hollis Interiors Furniture & Design hosted a Wine and Design event at their store in Foley. Attendees were able to meet the design team, sip curated wines, and browse the showroom.

In 2003, following in their grandfather's and father's footsteps, Tootsie Hollis Allen and Kelly Hollis, who were raised inside the store, took over the family business and added their specialty of interior design during a dramatic shift in the economy forcing Tootsie and Kelly to work harder than ever, taught by their father to always put the customer first and to go the extra mile doing whatever it takes to get the job completed to perfection.

Hollis Interiors offers complete design services for homes and vacation homes. Working on any budget, we provide access to products that enhance the design and attention to detail and personalized service including furnishings, both new and antique, designer fabrics and home accessories. Making a Difference with

Mahjong, a centuries-old game of strategy and camaraderie, is finding a vibrant life on the Eastern Shore thanks to passionate groups like Mahjong Collective and Mahjong Magnolias. Spearheaded by inspiring local women, these communities are using the game to foster friendships, build connections, and support meaningful causes.

Lynn Cooper, founder of Mahjong Collective, was captivated by the rhythmic clicking of the tiles and the social connection the game encourages. “It’s a challenging yet fun way to engage your mind and connect with others,” she shares. What began as a personal quest for playing partners has grown into a thriving network. Since May, Cooper has taught nearly 500 people, witnessing firsthand the enthusiasm of the community.

Mahjong Collective recently hosted its first Mahjong for a Cause The event sold out quickly, raising over $6,000 for Prodisee Pantry. With 64 players seated at creatively themed tables, the event seamlessly combined friendly competition with purposeful giving. “I couldn’t have done it without my incredible committee—Brooke Butler, Angela Weil, Tibbe Neal, Jenny Carr, and Amanda Smith,” Cooper says. “We had a wonderful time bringing this vision to life!” She credits Amanda Bacon, owner of Garage Studio, and Tricia Niemeyer who offered her event venue, Little Point Clear, as the setting for this special event for their unwavering support in transforming the idea into a memorable event.

Meanwhile, the Mahjong Magnolias—founded by Marie Kline, Kim Blackmon, and Deirdra Drinkard—have also used the game to create meaningful connections. What began as a fun girls’ night out has evolved into a dynamic group uniting women from diverse backgrounds. “It’s become a place where women can relax, connect, and support each other,” Kline explains.

The Magnolias have taken their mission further by hosting their Mahjong for a Mission event, benefiting the American Heart Association. Inspired by Kline’s mother, a stroke survivor, the group is passionate about raising awareness and funds. “The AHA has provided life-changing resources to families like mine,” Kline shares.

Mahjong Collective and Mahjong Magnolias, both have their eyes set on the future. Cooper plans to continue hosting lessons, events, and a spring 2025 tournament. The Magnolias will be collaborating with the OATH Fund, a nonprofit supporting adoptive families, a cause close to their hearts. The OATH event will be held on February 22nd, 2025, at Private Gallery in Fairhope.

Although Mahjong Collective and Mahjong Magnolias are two distinct and separate groups, both are weaving a tapestry of connection, kindness, and community support—one tile at a time.

TRADITIONS

Christmas Together: A Bayside Tradition

Christmas Together is one of Bayside Academy’s longest-standing traditions, originating in 1970 during the school’s inaugural year. While there have been minor changes over time, the heart of the program remains unchanged: gathering as the Bayside family to honor the past, celebrate the present, and look to the future during this special season.

Each year, the program features the lighting of the Family Candle by a family who has played a significant role in the school’s development. The Distinguished Service Award is also presented to a member of the school’s community for their dedication. The reading of the Christmas story from the Gospel of John highlights the true meaning of the season.

Alumni from each decade light candles representing their graduating years, acknowledging the foundation laid by past classes. Eighth graders present first graders with decorated Christmas trees, delighting the audience, while seniors add a handmade ornament to the alumni tree, which displays ornaments from all 50 graduating classes.

The Junior Class takes the stage following their return from Pine Mountain, Kentucky, performing Amazing Grace and their chosen class song, a testament to the bonds they’ve formed. The program concludes with the seniors’ lively rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas, filled with playful humor that leaves the audience smiling.

This cherished tradition embodies the spirit of Bayside, uniting as a community in celebration and reflection each holiday season.

Tamara’s Holiday Toy Drive: A Decade of Giving TRADITIONS

For 10 years, Tamara’s Holiday Toy Drive has brought joy to local children and families in need. Driven by her passion for helping the community, Tamara Wintzell, owner of Tamara’s Restaurant Group, started the initiative to support local kids who might not benefit from larger programs like Toys for Tots. “It’s about giving back to our neighbors who aren’t as fortunate,” she explains.

This year’s drive took on added significance after recent hurricanes devastated the area. “I felt helpless that I couldn’t go out and assist directly,” Tamara explains. “Incorporating hurricane relief into the toy drive was the next best thing to support affected families.”

The event expanded with the help of local businesses, which contributed by hosting drop-off boxes or donating funds through TRG Charities to purchase toys. Looking ahead, Tamara hopes even more businesses and individuals will participate by spreading the word and increasing contributions.

A highlight of the drive is Tamara’s annual pajama party, which has evolved from a small gathering that Tamara planned with her friend, Louise Sapp, to a large-scale event hosted this year at The Venue in downtown Fairhope. Attendees, dressed in festive PJs, bring toys or stuffed animals to benefit both local children and police stations, providing comfort to kids during domestic violence calls or accidents.

This year, Santa and the Grinch joined the festivities, bringing smiles and spreading holiday cheer. As Tamara reflects, “It’s a great cause, and it’s amazing to see so many people come together to make a difference.”

&REBECCA + BROCK

PHOTOS BY ANN SINCLAIR PHOTOGRAPHY

Rebecca Lynn Walter and Brock James Gilheart exchanged vows at Saint Lawrence Catholic Church in Fairhope, surrounded by loved ones. Rebecca, the Banquet Manager at the Original Oyster House, and Brock, a skilled carpenter, have a love story that began in 2010 and spanned high school, long-distance college years, and Brock’s coaching stint in Alexander City before bringing them back home to Fairhope.

The pair first connected through mutual friends and Facebook, sharing their first date at the movies as high school sweethearts. After 13 years of dating, including a proposal that was as unexpected as it was heartfelt, the couple was ready to celebrate their love in the community where it all began. Brock popped the question after an anniversary brunch at Sean’s Prime Dining, turning a simple, unassuming moment at home into one Rebecca will cherish forever.

Their wedding weekend kicked off with a welcome party at Fairhope Brewery, followed by a Bridesmaid Luncheon at Tamara’s Downtown, and a Rehearsal Dinner at the Original Oyster House. On their wedding day, Rebecca floated down the aisle in her "angel cloud" gown—a name affectionately given to her light, flowy dress by her maid and matron of honor. Pink and blue hues set the tone for a romantic day filled with joy and family.

The reception at the Fairhope Inn featured a custom wedding crest that tied together the details, from invitations to koozies, each item adorned with florals and their beloved dog, Remi. Guests savored hors d'oeuvres and a decadent spread, including highlights like crab meat beignets and pork loin. The centerpiece of the feast was their three-tier cake, with layers of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, topped with a custom gold monogram.

Rebecca’s meticulous planning as an event professional ensured everything ran smoothly. Her attention to detail left her guests impressed, and her bridesmaids declared it the “smoothest wedding” they’d ever attended.

After the festivities, the newlyweds jetted off to Excellence Oyster Bay in Jamaica for a dreamy honeymoon, where they indulged in breathtaking views and exceptional cuisine.

Now back home in Daphne, the Gilhearts are settling into married life with fond memories of a wedding that perfectly captured their love story, their personalities, and their journey together. For Rebecca and Brock, October 5th wasn’t just a day to remember— it was the start of forever.
