From the Editor

We are thrilled to showcase local professionals who are helping our neighbors love where they live in our All About Home issue.

We extend our gratitude to the Baldwin County Home Builders Association (BCHBA) for their impact on our community. Through scholarships in construction, workforce development, disaster recovery, and housing initiatives for first responders and veterans, the BCHBA Charitable Foundation is dedicated to improving lives throughout Baldwin County and beyond. We are honored to spotlight Chris Farlow, President of the BCHBA Charitable Foundation, in Community Leader and other individuals making a difference in our other features.

Fall is in the air! We are excited to share seasonal festivities such as the Fairhope Witches Ride and Pumpkin Fest. A big congratulations to The Haven on the success of their inaugural Tails of Hope Gala, and a big thank you for making a lasting difference in the lives of animals in need. Check out these great events and many more in this issue.

We hope you enjoy this issue’s features and community events. Be sure to grab your copy of our December Sip & Savor issue, in which we will celebrate local food, flavors, and the incredible chefs and restaurateurs that make our culinary scene so vibrant.

and BUILDING HOPEhomes

CHRIS FARLOW

Chris Farlow has led the Baldwin County Home Builders Association’s (BCHBA) Charitable Foundation as its President since 2018. In his role, Chris ensures meetings stay on track but emphasizes that real impact comes from the collective work of the board and staff, who are dedicated to carrying out the Foundation’s mission: supporting educational and charitable efforts in housing. By awarding scholarships in construction fields, assisting in workforce development, helping rebuild communities after disasters, and creating housing for first responders and veterans, the BCHBA Charitable Foundation aims to improve the lives of Baldwin County residents and beyond.

One of the Foundation’s first major projects was “A Home for a Hero,” where they built a mortgage-free home for Sergeant Paul Douglas Rains, a veteran injured by an IED in Iraq. Supported by over 200 sponsors, the home, located near Daphne, was completed in 2015. Following Hurricane Ida in 2021, Chris and the board provided hot meals and gift cards to families in the small Louisiana community of Cut Off, helping them recover after the storm. The Foundation has also awarded over $135,000 in scholarships for construction students and managed numerous local projects to build wheelchair ramps, repair roofs, and make homes ADA-compliant.

COMMUNITY leader

The most recent large project was “Home Sweet Home,” completed in partnership with the PR Foundation led by Panini Pete and community volunteers in 2022. This initiative provided Johnny Stewart, the son of a disabled veteran, and his wife Krystal with a safe, mortgage-free home after his lifelong residence had become hazardous.

Next on the Foundation’s agenda is the development of Warrior Legacy Ranch, a 24/7 facility providing peer-to-peer mental health support for Baldwin County veterans. This first-of-its-kind center will include a 1,500-square-foot multipurpose building, and future expansions will feature a 7,000-square-foot reunion space for veterans to reconnect with their military families. Chris and the Foundation, together with the PR Foundation, are actively raising funds and support to bring this vital project to life.

Chris’s deep connection to the industry, where he has spent over 25 years, fuels his commitment to the Foundation’s work. He and his wife Jennifer moved to Fairhope in 2001, seeking a high quality of life for their family, which now includes their two daughters, Veronica and Tatum and Lexi Grace, their Australian Shepherd. Living on Fish River, Chris enjoys nature, gardening, and annual traditions like a daddy-daughter fishing trip to the Chandleur Islands with his daughter, Veronica. His career as a builder remains a passion, as he believes a home is much more than a structure— it’s a foundation for families and dreams.

Witches on bikes could be seen all over downtown Fairhope as participants of The Fairhope Witches Ride got into the Halloween spirit in support of the Baldwin Humane Society. The ride was followed by a Witches Ball at The Halstead Amphitheater with music by the Tips Tops.

IMPACT

Make-A-Wish Alabama is a dedicated chapter of the national Make-AWish organization, with a mission to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Since its founding, the Alabama chapter has granted over 1,500 wishes, covering all 67 counties across the state. Through the power of a wish, the organization helps children build emotional and physical strength, which can be crucial in their battle against serious illnesses.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Make-A-Wish Alabama is its deep connection to the local community. While part of a broader national network, the chapter operates independently with its own board of directors, staff, and volunteers. All donations and funds raised go directly to supporting wish kids in Alabama, ensuring that the resources benefit the children and families in the state.

The organization’s primary focus is granting wishes. Each wish has a profound impact, often marking a pivotal moment in a child's treatment journey. Medical professionals frequently observe that wishes work hand-in-hand with traditional treatments, offering children the emotional strength and hope needed to fight their illnesses. Last year alone, Make-A-Wish Alabama granted 215 wishes, bringing joy and hope to hundreds of families.

The origins of Make-A-Wish date back to 1980 when a seven-year-old boy named Christopher Greicius, who was battling leukemia, had his wish to become a police officer fulfilled. This one wish sparked a movement that has now granted more than 330,000 wishes across the U.S., including those in Alabama since the chapter became independent in 2012.

Make-A-Wish Alabama has witnessed countless heartwarming stories that demonstrate the profound effect of wishes. For instance, in October, a wish kid named Melody, who was a saxophonist before being diagnosed with cancer, wished for her high school band to receive new uniforms. Her wish came true at a Reeltown High School football game, where the band performed in their new uniforms, each adorned with a special symbol designed by Melody’s brother. This wish, filled with love and community spirit, will resonate for years to come.

Despite its successes, the organization faces significant challenges. As medical advancements allow more children to be diagnosed early, more qualify for a wish. However, resources are limited, and for every wish granted, there are two more children waiting. Ensuring that all eligible children in Alabama, particularly in rural areas, receive a wish remains a top priority.

Make-A-Wish Alabama invites the community to get involved through donations, volunteering, and participating in events like the Trailblaze Challenge and Wish Nights, which raise funds and awareness for this life-changing cause.

for change JUDGE MICHELLE THOMASON

Judge Michelle Thomason, a dedicated leader in the Baldwin County legal community, is the driving force behind the Baldwin County Veterans Treatment Court. With a diverse background that includes a degree in business from the University of Mobile, over a decade of banking experience, and over 18 years on the bench, Judge Thomason embodies a unique blend of skills and compassion that sets her apart.

Judge Thomason spent more than ten years in banking, working full time in that field while pursuing her college degree. With a family at home in Daphne, she earned her Juris Doctor from Tulane Law School in New Orleans in 1995. She was a partner in a law firm where she specialized in civil litigation and family law for over eleven years. In 2006, she took the bench and quickly established herself as one of the busiest judges in the state, managing an astonishing docket that includes family law cases as well as civil, criminal, and traffic matters. Even with her district court having the highest volume of cases in the state, Judge Thomason has always made judicial education a priority, both in teaching and in learning, and currently has the highest number of education hours of any judge in the history of the Alabama judicial system.

Beyond her judicial responsibilities, Judge Thomason is deeply involved in the community. She is in her second year as President of the Fairhope Sunset Rotary, having been a Rotarian for 17 years, and is a Paul Harris Fellow. She is also a member of Impact 100 and other organizations, taking on various leadership roles to effect positive change.

The Baldwin County Veterans Treatment Court, initiated by Judge Thomason, stands as a testament to her commitment to helping those who have served our country. Recognizing that being involved in the court system often signifies a deviation from the right path, the Court focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment, providing a supportive environment where veterans can receive the help they need surrounded by those who care about their well-being and success.

A central aspect of the program is its mentorship component. The Veterans Treatment Court prides itself on having exceptional mentors, all of whom possess military backgrounds and can deeply relate to the experiences of the veterans they support. The mentor-mentee relationship extends beyond the court’s requirements, providing ongoing guidance and connection long after participants have completed the program.

Judge Michelle Thomason’s dedication to the Baldwin County Veterans Court exemplifies her passion for justice, her commitment to community service, and her belief in the power of support and mentorship. Under her leadership, the court continues to be a beacon of hope for veterans seeking a new beginning.

Since 2012, Alex Robinson has been at the helm of the Downtown Fairhope Business Association, serving as its Executive Director. For Alex, the vibrant energy and dedication of Fairhope's residents fuel her passion for the community. "Fairhope is such an amazing place to live and raise a family," Alex shares. "The incredible people who live here, past and present, are the number one reason I love it. The volunteer spirit is contagious—everyone is eager to share their strengths with the community. I’m so grateful to be part of that tradition."

Over the years, Alex has spearheaded numerous initiatives that have not only benefited local businesses but have also enriched the quality of life in Fairhope. Events like Fairhope Girls Night Out and the Outdoor Movie on Fairhope Avenue during the holiday season are just two examples. "Watching ideas come to life and seeing how they bring the community together is really special," Alex says. Her collaborative approach with business owners ensures that these events promote growth while keeping the unique character of Fairhope intact.

Alex Robinson

Leading an organization that supports nearly 200 diverse businesses is no small feat. Alex credits open communication as the key to success. Monthly meetings with business owners, city staff, and even the police chief help keep the downtown area thriving. "It's not always easy, but working together ensures that downtown stays beautiful, safe, and successful," Alex explains.

Beyond her professional achievements, Alex is a proud wife and mother of four. She and her husband, Jay, have been married for 18 years and are raising their children—Jay Nick (16), Parks (12), Greer (7), and Alexandra (4)—in the heart of Fairhope. The family is deeply involved in the community, with the children growing up attending events like Downtown Fairhope Trick or Treat. Parks, whose birthday coincides with the annual tree lighting in November, once believed that all the holiday lights were in celebration of his special day. "He still loves it!" Alex says with a smile.

Family traditions, such as annual trips to Walt Disney World, bring the Robinson family closer together. "We’ve celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and even beating cancer at Disney," Alex reflects. As a cancer survivor, she carries a deep sense of gratitude for every moment she gets to spend with her loved ones.

What does Alex hope her children will remember most about their time with her? "I hope they see that Jay and I love others and love Jesus, and that we’re trying to make a difference in this community we cherish so much," she says. "I want them to learn that involvement is important. Showing up for the people and things you care about really matters."

MaryMichael & Chase

The wedding of Mary Michael Bousson and Chase Landon Walker was a beautiful blend of devotion, tradition, and the natural beauty of Mobile Bay. Mary Michael, Assistant Director of CCA Alabama and part-owner of family company Fairhope Rattle, met Chase, a Superintendent at DSLD Homes, in 2016 on their first day of college. The lab partners quickly became more, and their love only grew over time. After four years of dating, Chase proposed during a peaceful October afternoon at Mary Michael’s family’s hunting farm in Burnt Corn—a memory they’ll treasure forever.

Mary Michael shares that the story of their wedding day began at a little oak-draped beach on Weeks Bay, affectionately named “Naked Beach” by her parents over twenty years ago. The name came about during summer weekends spent with family friends, when the young children, including Mary Michael, would shed their swim diapers and run around freely. This secret beach became a cherished spot for the family.

PHOTOS BY GRACE ANN PHOTOGRAPHY

Mary Michael reflected on her wedding day, saying, “Since the ceremony was to take place on a boat, my daddy, along with our Lab Brandy as the flower girl, walked me down the long wharf to meet my handsome groom. At the end of the pier, our pastor began the ceremony and offered a prayer over us, while our dear friends and family surrounded us in their boats, ready to follow us out into Mobile Bay. We said ‘I do’ with our parents and pastor as witnesses on a boat at Middle Bay Lighthouse in Mobile Bay. It was a truly humbling experience to see sixteen other boats overflowing with our most favorite people there to celebrate and witness the commitment we made to each other and the Lord.”

The couple chose Middle Bay Lighthouse in Mobile Bay because it holds a special place in their hearts. Chase and Mary Michael fell in love there and have both been baptized in the Bay. They have shared countless sunsets, caught fish, and spent hours boating, chatting, and dreaming about their life together. According to Mary Michael. "It was truly a no brainer when we thought about where we would like to start forever."

Following their vows, a boat parade led the newlyweds and guests back to "Naked Beach" for a joyous reception under the stars. The night was filled with laughter, fireworks, and a brief moment of excitement when the wharf caught fire, only to be swiftly put out by Mary Michael’s quick-thinking brothers!

Mary Michael shares, “One of my favorite parts of the wedding was the flowers. My mama and I spent months handpicking the flowers. We had a flower party before the rehearsal dinner. My best girlfriends and YAYAs made all the arrangements with so much love—they made my dreams come true.”

Guests enjoyed a delicious selection of food from The TinTins Rock and Roll Food Truck. For dessert, they indulged in bundt cakes in various flavors.

For their honeymoon, the couple stayed at the Bay House on Naked Beach, enjoying boat rides and catching two Jubilees during their time there. Now, Mary Michael and Chase continue to their love story, firmly rooted in Fairhope, surrounded by the community and waters they love so much.

*Did you know Mobile Bay was previously named the “Bay of the Holy Spirit”? The origins of the name can be traced back to the religious beliefs and practices of Spanish explorers who first arrived in the New World in the early 16th century. These explorers were deeply religious, and they saw their voyages as a way of spreading the Christian faith to new lands and peoples.
