“ “ COMMUNITY leader

Born and raised in Alabama, Huey Hoss Mack has spent almost his entire life in Baldwin County—creating personal ties that inspired a career of service to the community he grew up loving.

It was his grandfather’s murder in Escambia County in 1982, however, that directed his path of service. Three years later, in 1985, Mack began a career in law enforcement with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences as a crime scene investigator and analyst. “Because of my grandfather, I wanted to work in the field to assist those who have experienced similar tragedies and are the victims of crime,” says Mack.

In 1989, Mack transferred to the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office as a Criminal Investigator, working crime scenes. He was promoted to lieutenant over the Criminal Investigation Division in 1995 and reached the rank of captain in 2004, at which time he became chief investigator of the Criminal Investigation Division. He also served task forces including the U.S. Customs Blue Lighting Task Force, the Baldwin County Major Crimes Task Force and the Child Abuse Task Force, in addition to serving as a consultant with many other law enforcement agencies and a U.S. Marshall Special Deputy. He ran for the office of Baldwin County Sheriff in 2006 and was elected to his first term. He is currently serving his fifth term as Baldwin County Sheriff.

Over his last 18 years in office, Sheriff “Hoss” Mack has proven his integrity, dedication and devotion to the community that elected him. “I've been fortunate to work with a great team with the sheriff's office, and we have had many accomplishments during my time as sheriff— the greatest being what we’ve done for the county’s children,” he notes, referring to the school resource officer program, which put a school resource officer in every public school, and the establishment of Camp Shining Star.

Naturally, in a community that has seen growth of the kind that Baldwin County has experienced over the last two decades, there have been challenges that Sheriff Mack has had to contend with and overcome. “On balance, our greatest challenge at the sheriff's office has been and continues to be keeping up with the ongoing growth of Baldwin County,” he says. “When I first came to work in law enforcement, there were approximately 76,000 people in Baldwin County. Today, we have over 260,000.”

Continually serving his community, Sheriff Mack has held office in the Robertsdale Rotary Club as well as the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, and he has sat on the boards of the Baldwin County Economic Alliance and Boy Scouts of America. He has also been recognized for his service with a number of awards. “I have always placed service above self in my career and my life,” he says. “My goal is to keep serving the citizens of Baldwin County as long as I am able.”

PowHER Hour is organized by Coastal Alabama Business Chamber and presented by Beachball Properties. This quarterly event unites women in the community at Orange Beach Event Center and includes local vendors, lunch and an inspiring speaker. The special guest for Q3 was Dr. Valerie James from VisionSpot Consulting Group. She presented “LeadHERship: Mastering Brilliant Achievement (MBA) in Results,” a transformative program.

Preserving Wonder PROTECTING TOMORROW

We humans often only consider how the impact that the change and growth of our cities will make our lives more or less convenient and how it might benefit us. But what of the ecological impact that is a natural consequence of “progress” and its displacement of so much natural wildlife?

It was this question—and the desire to take protective measures that led Skipper Tonsmeire, an ecologicallyminded local businessmen, and his friend John Borom, an avid birder and college administrator, to take action in the 1970s to preserve what is now known as the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Two decades later in 1990, the two men led the creation of the non-profit Weeks Bay Foundation, which ultimately became the South Alabama Land Trust (SALT) in 2020. During those 40-odd years, and even now, the focus has expanded along with the scope of the organization’s mission.

“Skipper and John’s original focus was preserving the land that is now protected by the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve,” says Executive Director Jane Herndon. “The mission expanded organically over time to include the protection of other lands in Mobile and Baldwin Counties that had high conservation value but that were under threat of development. Witnessing firsthand the adverse impacts of imprudent development on native habitats and water quality, they knew that land conservation would continue to be a valuable tool to protect the environment in this region.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN OLDSHUE, SHERRI SWARTZ, VERONICA HERNDON, AND STEPHEN SAVAGE

“Every acre of land that SALT protects means more protected habitat for the plants and animals that make the Gulf Coast special,” Herndon goes on. “It also means cleaner water, preservation of the scenic beauty of this region and more places to get outside and connect with nature. And our organization serves a key role in educating the public about our fragile coastal environment.”

As a non-profit, SALT relies on funding from the donations of generous individuals as well as that of local businesses, members and from fundraisers. The organization additionally receives grant funding from a variety of government agencies, businesses, and private foundations.

In the midst of constant changes to the local landscape across South Alabama, challenges continue. “Rising real estate prices in this rapidly growing region makes it a challenge for SALT to acquire more land for conservation,” says Herndon. “Even land with low development potential due to the presence of wetlands is getting expensive, but we are using all available resources to identify land of high conservation value and to put together the funding to acquire more land. We are also tasked with raising community awareness of the urgent need for land conservation and how protecting land is part of smart land use planning.”

ON THE BAY

We have been asked several times, ‘What part of the home did you remodel?’ shares Israel Crocker of Crocker & Smith Custom Builders. “This is a testimony to the attention paid to the details of the iconic area in which this home is located. The home is completely new, but when you see the landscaping, architecture, and the way the home rests between old live oaks, you would assume that it has been there for many decades.”

Finished in February of 2024, the home was designed by Historical Concepts of New York and Atlanta and built by Crocker & Smith Custom Builders. It boasts 24 rooms

in its one and a half stories, and the main house is 6227 square feet. The home is attached to a garage by a breezeway. The architectural feel is of the classic bay house, and the exterior is homogenous with the boardwalk south of the nearby Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa.

The interior, designed by Heather Chadduck of HCID in Birmingham, brings the exterior aesthetic within its many spaces, with attention to every detail. The radial staircase and the faux finish of painting on the floor in the entry add to the nostalgia of the home. Also of note are the heart pine walls and cabinetry of the library, the hidden door of the powder room, and an elegant Bay sitting room. The large, open spaces of the family room share a passthrough serving bar into the kitchen.

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY: JON JEFFRESS, DEEP SOUTH FOCUS PHOTOGRAPHY & CINDY MCCRORY, BLUE ROOM PHOTOGRAPHY

The team at Stone Gallery worked with the designer and homeowners to select natural stone surfaces befitting the home. Marine Black Soapstone was used on the perimeter surfaces of the kitchen, and the center island countertops were created of Calacatta Oro Honed. The master bathroom boasts Calcutta Oro. The library and living room fireplaces also showcase beautiful natural stone materials.

A unique and favorite room in the home known as “The Perch” overlooks the entry to the property and the incredible landscaping design created by Joe Comer of Espalier Landscape Architecture.

Lending the home a feeling of openness, all downstairs ceiling heights are 12 feet. Throughout the home, the hardwood flooring is antiqued, wide plank, reclaimed oak from Tennessee buffed in an oil finish. The wood trim was designed and made specifically for this home.

A unique and favorite room in the home known as “The Perch” overlooks the entry to the property and the incredible landscaping design created by Joe Comer of Espalier Landscape Architecture.

Outside, a large porch that affords plenty of room for entertaining faces the Bay and boardwalk. The impressive 32-foot staircase stays true to the historical feel of the bay house exterior. An existing house was moved to the back of the property, and it now serves as the guest house.

The homeowners enjoy that each room is unique yet flows beautifully into the next. They chose the location of the home 12 years ago. They grew up spending their summers in Point Clear and wanted their children to do the same. After enjoying their first Christmas and Easter in this beautiful home, they look forward to many more.

MOM

Aswith many professionals, life looks a great deal different, career-wise, for Amy Smith in 2024 than it did pre-pandemic. The then high school teacher reevaluated what she wanted from her time and realized that she craved more flexibility and autonomy, shifting gears to get her real estate license and become a Realtor.

Now an advisor with Engel & Völkers Gulf Shores, Smith helps counsel and guide clients through their real estate experience. On the other side of her professional life is her family life—and, as a working mother, she has had to learn how to balance both in a way that works to everyone’s benefit. “Being a working mom has its challenges as well as its rewards,” she says. “Many of the skills I have gained from being a mother translate nicely to the emotional, educational, and communicative challenges that come with serving clients in my current job. As I reevaluated my career during COVID, I got serious about my personal dreams and, with the support of my family, I intentionally chose what my daughters would be a witness to when it came to the work I do outside of our home. Being a working mom means being determined to grow myself in ways I had never dared and remembering to balance the stressors of the day by finding delight in small, everyday joys.”

Smith’s two girls—one in high school and one in college—may no longer be in their formative years, but she takes great joy in seeing them forge their futures. “I love watching my girls do what makes their heart sing,” she says. “When they’re older, I want them to remember that I was vulnerable enough with them to share my shortcomings, quick and sincere to apologize for my wrongdoings, and that my love for them is never conditional. It simply exists, and there is nothing they can do to add to nor subtract from my love for them. I want them to remember that I am thankful and beyond blessed to know them as their mom.”

Having one member of their little tribe missing after the loss of their first baby, Smith and her daughters have a special tradition of sitting together at the bayside bench dedicated to their brother. “When the girls were little, I would drive them down from where we were living in D.C. for the summer, and we would watch 4th of July fireworks from Sawyer's bench. Even during this season of my girls becoming more independent and our nest being a little less noisy, I go back to that perch for a quick FaceTime with them or send them the view from our family's bench. It’s a great way to end a workday for me.”

DAPHNE

It was a beautiful evening at the Coastal Arts Center, an equally stunning venue, for the Resin Reflections meet-the-artist reception. Attendees had the unique opportunity to meet the talented artists behind the mesmerizing resin artwork on display. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, enhanced by delightful refreshments and a donation bar graciously provided by Friends of the Arts - Orange Beach. The event was a true celebration of creativity and community, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.

Like most of us who are old enough to have lived through the day, Elizabeth Broyles remembers 9/11 vividly. And while many were inspired to swear an oath to serve their country, Broyles was inspired to service of a different kind: K-9 Search and Rescue.

“It was the largest gathering of Search K-9’s in the history of the US,” Broyles recalls. “When I saw how they worked tirelessly for days on end, I knew I wanted to do something like that. “

In 2014, she made that passion a reality by beginning her work with dogs. Broyles was certified with K-9 Maggie, a black Labrador, in 2015, and worked with her for the next four years. In 2019, Broyles was certified with K-9 Dixie and in 2020 with K-9 Daisy— both bloodhounds, both certified in tracking, bone, article, and evidence through the Bay County Sheriff’s Department.

Broyles herself is an independent Search and Rescue K-9 handler and is not associated with any team or

a member of law enforcement, though both she and her K-9s have certifications and training needed to assist law enforcement. As a team, they assist state and local law enforcement as well as the Alabama Bureau of Investigations (ABI) and FBI. She and her K-9s have assisted law enforcement in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, and throughout northern Alabama.

“This work is important to me not only because it is something I am passionate about but also because it allows this amazing breed of dog to do what they were born to do,” says Broyles, whose full-time job is serving as a lab technician at the Southern Cancer Center in Foley. “Their God-given talent can be lifesaving, and it would be such a waste not to use these K-9s to help others. When dealing with a family’s worst nightmare, you should use every tool in the box. Bloodhounds can be used to track a missing person—living or deceased— they can track a car, work in any terrain, track through water, they can pick up tracks three or four weeks old, give direction of travel and find evidence as well as being able to tell you where not look. Bloodhounds are so precise that they are the only breed whose evidence is admissible in court of law.”

Broyles is not compensated for any of her search and rescue work, personally donating her time and selffinancing her own travel, certifications, K-9 care, vehicle maintenance, gear, and K-9 seminar trainings.

“The biggest challenge I face is when the search is over— regardless of the outcome—and feeling like I haven’t done enough,” says Broyles. “When you leave a search, you must trust that you have done enough and that anything the K-9s have done will be of use in a criminal case and bring closure to a family.”

The Lower Alabama Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association hosted its annual Beach Party fundraiser at Mobile Big Game Fishing Club. The event featured great food, an open bar, live music, and tons of items up for grabs on the raffles, silent auction, and live auction including fishing gear and great trips. The mission of CCA is to conserve, protect, and enhance the present and future availability of our coastal resources for the benefit of the general public.

DianaSteven +

On a beautiful evening, beneath the warm Alabama sun, Diana Roberts became Mrs. Steven Beaty in a wedding that beautifully combined romance, elegance, and joy. After dating for one year and four months, the couple exchanged vows at the picturesque Coastal Arts Center in Orange Beach, AL.

Their journey to the altar began with a heartwarming surprise in Texas. Steven, eager to meet Diana's friends, joined her on a trip to the Lone Star State. At a dinner party organized by her close friend, the evening turned magical as the couples posed for photos. When it was their turn, Steven began speaking tenderly

about their relationship before dropping to one knee. Diana, along with the other guests, was completely surprised! Balloons and streamers filled the air as everyone celebrated the moment. It turns out, only one person knew of Steven’s plans—the friend who hosted the party.

Their wedding day was a reflection of their unique love story. Diana walked down the aisle in a stunning white gown with a lace bodice, Swarovski crystal straps, and a sparkle tulle top layer. The dress featured a high-low hem that showed off her playful pink shoes and a short train that trailed behind her.

The couple chose shades of pink, accented by sage green, white, and touches of gold, for their wedding colors. Peonies, the centerpiece of their floral arrangements, added a soft, romantic feel to the day. Gold vases and flatware completed the tablescapes, creating an elegant yet warm ambiance.

The ceremony was filled with laughter, especially when Diana, determined to slide her engagement ring back on after receiving her wedding band, found it stuck. During the reception, her girlfriends from Texas stole the show with a surprise dance routine to Laney Wilson's "Thicc as Thieves," leaving the guests cheering for more.

Their wedding was a celebration of love at any age—Diana's first marriage and Steven's second. With 85 guests, including over 60 from out of state, they made sure the weekend was memorable by hosting several events before the wedding day.

The reception featured a cocktail hour, a seated dinner, a live artist capturing the essence of the day, and a photo booth for guests. The evening ended with the couple departing in a 1958 white convertible Cadillac, their guests waving glow sticks and lighting up the night with cool sparks.

Diana and Steven's wedding was a true celebration of their journey, filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable moments.

AL Gulf Coast Zoo New Ambassador - Clint Eatswood, N. American Beaver

[Gulf Shores, AL] - The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is excited to introduce the newest addition to the WILD (Wildlife Interpretive and Learning Department) ambassador team –North American Beaver, Clint Eatswood.

Clint Eatswood was born on April 2, 2024, at Bear Hollow Zoo in Athens, Georgia. At 3 months old, he weighs only 9 pounds. As he matures, he can grow up to 85-100 pounds. Clint loves swimming in his pool and chewing on his oak sticks.

Clint has been acclimating to his new home here at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo for over a month now. He is ready to begin representing the zoo during its educational programs in the park and out in the community. Clint was able to be acquired by the zoo thanks to a generous donation by the Georgia Society of Association Executives who held a “Pay the Pig” fundraiser during their recent annual retreat in Gulf Shores.

The North American beaver is the largest rodent in the United States, growing up to 3 feet long, not including their tail. As a semi-aquatic mammal, beavers are able to stay underwater for up to 15 minutes. Beavers also have ever growing teeth and require large amounts of browse and chews to take care of them.

Be on the lookout for Clint on your next visit to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, open daily 9 am – 4 pm. He is currently learning how to meet new people by taking brief walks through the zoo and spending time in the South American Adventure yard for swim time.

Clint Eatswood’s punny name was chosen by the staff at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo and he will fit right in with Lucille Ball the three-banded armadillo, Kevin Bacon the domestic pig, Blake Shellton the tortoise, and all his other animal ambassador friends.

Clint will stay behind the scenes in the ambassador exhibit space for now. Plans have been designed to build a permanent exhibit space in the Americas section of the zoo. If you would like to help fund this new exhibit, contact development@algulfcoastzoo.org or make an online donation at www.alabamagulfcoastzoo.org.

Lowery Named New Baldwin County Sheriff

[Montgomery, AL] — Gov. Kay Ivey has announced her choice of Anthony Lowery to serve as the next Baldwin County sheriff, effective September 1. The current sheriff, Hoss Mack, will soon be leaving the post after two decades to serve as head of the Alabama Sheriffs Association. A lifelong resident of Baldwin County, Lowery presently serves as chief deputy in the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office. In his nearly 20 years with the office, he has held a variety of responsibilities and taken on many special projects, making him well-prepared to lead the force, Ivey said. She added, “Bringing both wide-ranging law enforcement experience, as well as community involvement, Anthony Lowery will make a strong and effective sheriff for the area. Sheriff Hoss Mack leaves large shoes to fill, but I am confident Anthony is more than prepared to lead.” Lowery served as project manager for the construction of the Baldwin County Corrections Center expansion. He has a total of 28 years of law enforcement experience, beginning his career with the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office.

Since 1993, the Annual National Shrimp Festival Golf Challenge for Education has acted as a kickoff to the excitement in the month leading up to the festival. This year the action was back at Craft Farms. Money raised for the Challenge goes towards the local Chamber’s education initiatives. The Chamber & Festival pride themselves on providing a premier experience for golfers and sponsors.
