FROM THE EDITOR
FROM THE EDITOR
In this issue, we salute the men and women of our judicial system. As we will soon enter into an important election year, regardless of your political party, please reflect upon the service given to our community by our elected officials whose role in our community is so important. We are excited to profile individuals who are true leaders in the practice of law.
Since our last issue, there have been many opportunities along the Eastern Shore to enjoy a great time for a good cause. Fairhope Rotary Club filled the streets of downtown Fairhope with their Steak Cook Off, Girls Night Out was again a sellout, and Ballin’ on Belrose continues to grow in impressive style.
Social Magazines cover events, but it is more than dressing up for a good time that makes up who we are. YOU are the fabric that makes our communities strong and vibrant. We serve you, our readers...along with the individuals who trust us to tell their story, the businesses who partner with us and the organizations who work hard every day to make a difference.
In this, our Gentlemen’s Issue, we had the opportunity to get to know some guys who are leading the way in the community, and we are excited to introduce them to you too. Keeping with our theme, we feature a SuperDad this month who has built a thriving business while never losing sight of the importance of being a “hands on” dad.
We hope that your Summer activities with family and friends create many great memories. We will be back in August with some new events, people and organizations making our community a great place to live.
We are excited to add another publication to our family, Social Coastal Magazine, just launched in June. From Bay to Beach, our goal is to put a smile on your face. September is our Real Estate Issue in which we will showcase real estate professionals you need to know. Whether you are a local or a tourist, your love for our county is why we are the second fastest growing county in Alabama. We are honored to have the opportunity to show off the people, events, organizations and businesses that make it such a special place to live and visit.

THE ARC OF LAW
BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
COMMUNITY leaders
ike many people who go into the legal profession, Robert Wilters was following his father’s footsteps and considering the financial aspect of what is generally a lucrative industry. But after spending time practicing law in Bay Minette, Wilters found that being an attorney wasn’t quite what he expected.
I realized that I was bored and didn’t like representing people I knew were guilty,” Wilters recalls. Rather than simply gutting it out, he decided to shake things up and do something more exciting with his life: he applied to the FBI and became a Special Agent, after which time he was sent to the Mobile field office, where he spent a month in Miami on a joint FBI/DEA investigation. After six months in Mobile, he was transferred to the Indianapolis field office in January of 1983 and worked bank robberies, kidnapping, extortions, and other reactive crimes. In May of 1984, he was transferred to the New York City field office to work foreign counterintelligence against the Soviet Union.
14 SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE
By then, Wilters had met and married his wife, Ame. A year after the birth of their first child, he left the Bureau and returned to Baldwin County as the Chief Assistant District Attorney, working with David Whetstone for the next six and a half years. Deciding to push his career in law even further, he ran for election as a judge. Losing his first election did not derail him, however. He was appointed to fill a vacancy in the District Court, where he served as a District Court judge for six years. He was elected to the Circuit Court bench in 1999, where he stayed until retirement from the position in 2015, and then ran for the District Attorney position. After being sworn in on January 17, 2017, he served his first term and was then re-elected for a second.
Over the past six years he has been in office as DA, Wilters has been making some much needed changes that have been directly impacting the community. “With the help and assistance of the county CSI, we have developed a computerized data base and storage program to maintain and track cases,” he says. “We have also started a white-collar crimes task force as well as a financial exploitation of the elderly unit, and we have a facility dog who sits with sexually and physically abused children during forensic interviews and in court. We also have an elder abuse unit, construction fraud unit, and we handle drug court, veterans’ court, and mental health court.”
During his next years in office, Wilters has specific goals that he would still like to achieve, with an ability to make an even greater impact— including re-establishing a SANE (sexual abuse nurse examiner) program in Baldwin County so that rape and abuse victims can stay within Baldwin County instead of traveling. Wilters currently serves as vice president of the Alabama District Attorneys’ Association and president of the Alabama Association of Drug Court Professionals and is active in the Baldwin County Drug Court Foundation. Additionally, he has continued the crime victims’ vigil started by his predecessor.

David J. MALONEYESQ.
Photography By Toni Riales
Since 2000, founding attorney, David J. Maloney, along with the entire team at Maloney-Lyons, LLC, has built a reputation as one of the most powerful injury firms in Alabama while never losing sight of the importance of getting to know each client as a person. From the moment you call their office to the moment they resolve your case, you will work one on one with David himself, in most situations. The firm specializes in personal injury cases including auto accidents, large truck and motorcycle accidents, premises and products liability as well as hurricane claims.
Q/A
What is one thing you hope others would say about you?
He is a man of his word.
What has been the most rewarding part of a career in the judicial system?
I truly love almost every aspect of my job. I love helping clients. I love arguing with insurance adjusters and even opposing counsel. I love going to trial, and I definitely love getting great results for clients.
Who is your favorite fictional lawyer?
When I was 13, I read “To Kill a Mockingbird” and I knew right then, I wanted to be a lawyer and to represent the underdog. So, without a doubt, that lawyer is Atticus Finch… and I do now represent underdogs when I help accident victims go up against big insurance companies.

LYNN BILES
BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
After marrying a lawyer in 1978, the law became a big part of Lynn Biles’ life— if only through her husband’s work and the conversation he brought home. But it became even more central when Biles had her second child in 1982 and she found herself wanting a career that made her feel more involved than her previous work in Fairhope. It was then that Judge Harry J. Wilters, Jr., gave her a job in the Law Library in Bay Minette. “I worked nine hours a week starting out, but because the county has grown and the needs of the Baldwin County citizens are varied, I now work full-time,” says Biles. “We provide various forms, Westlaw research and Code of Alabama, as well as use of copy and fax machines and a nice place to visit. We try our best to help anyone.”
Biles’s welcoming attitude and desire to help, along with her long tenure at the Law Library and an incredible work ethic, made her an ideal choice to become Executive Director of the Baldwin County Bar Association in 2002 while still maintaining her Law Library position. “I was raised on a farm, and that life gave me a strong work ethic that I still have,” Biles says. “To quote Vince Lombardi, ‘The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.’”

“I was raised on a farm, and that life gave me a strong work ethic that I still have.”
An avid walker, Biles turns her frequent strolls into a quest to beautify the community by picking up trash as she goes. That dedication to the community is further reflected by her active involvement in various organizations. Biles is a faithful, lifelong member of First Methodist Church of Bay Minette, where she teaches children’s Sunday School and has been active as past president of the Ladies’ Circle as well as coordinator for their annual picnic the past three years and is Nurture Chairperson. She is a founding member of IMPACT 100 Baldwin County and currently serves on the North Baldwin Infirmary Authority Board. In 2022, she received the “Boss of the Year Award” from the Baldwin County Association of Legal Professionals. She can often be found knitting baby caps for newborns at Women’s Care Medical Center, where she has been a liaison for over a decade helping with their Walk for Life Fundraiser.
As blessed as her life has been, Biles also knows loss: her youngest son was killed in a car accident in 2001, and she was widowed in 2021 after 43 years of marriage. Still, she celebrates a son and daughter-in-law who have given her two grandchildren and the many friendships she has built over her lifetime.

Q
/A
What is one thing you hope others would say about you? I hope my clients say that I am easy to communicate with, fully transparent, and work not only hard, but smart to achieve the best possible outcome for their case.... As for opposing counsel, I hope they say I am professional, courteous, and a tenacious advocate for my clients.
What has been the most rewarding part of a career in the judicial system?
As a Criminal Defense Attorney, I represent the accused. We are on an uphill battle from day one in a case. The odds are against us. Obtaining a stellar result for a deserving client is the most rewarding part of my career.
Could you share a fictional lawyer from film, television, or literature that you find particularly captivating or intriguing?
Mickie Haller, The Lincoln Lawyer. He's a hustler, beating the roads from courthouse to courthouse. Never scared to strike a jury. That is what being a criminal defense attorney is all about.
Jonathan was born and raised in Monroe, Louisiana, where he attended West Monroe High School. He graduated from the University of Louisiana at Monroe with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies. Before attending law school, Jonathan worked for Anheuser-Busch Budweiser, traveling the country as a national marketing representative. He obtained his Juris Doctor from the Birmingham School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama. While in law school, Jonathan worked for one of Alabama's largest plaintiff firms while attending law school classes on nights and weekends. Essentially, Jonathan not only learned the law, but also how to practice law during his law school education.
Jonathan spent time every summer in Mobile, Alabama, and the surrounding bay and beach areas. Even as a young child, Jonathan knew one day he would call coastal Alabama his home. Jonathan made his dream a reality when he graduated law school and moved to Fairhope, Alabama.
Jonathan and his wife Kathryn are members of Trinity Presbyterian Church and reside in Fairhope. When Jonathan is not in the courtroom, he enjoys scuba diving, tennis, concerts, fly fishing, building guitars, cooking, and reading. If you see Jonathan at the courthouse or in public, say, "Hello." He always enjoys meeting new people from all walks of life!

A LIFE OF LAW
SAM CROSBY
BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
If Sam Crosby’s career in law was made into a movie, the scene changes alone would make it an interesting watch.
As a young lawyer fresh from law school, Crosby took his first job with a local firm in Bay Minette, working for Stone and Partin at their offices in a converted gas station. Forty-five years later, Crosby still walks past those same names on the wall, though the gas station has been traded in for more impressive offices across four locations with thirteen attorneys, and Crosby now works in the Daphne and Foley offices.
Over the course of those 45 years as a lawyer, Crosby’s path has been anything but linear—and anything but boring. While engaged in private practice, he also served at various times as a municipal judge, an arbitrator, a mediator, and an adjunct university professor. Because he wanted to serve his country in a larger way, he joined the Naval Reserve JAG Corps. “In the JAG Corps, I had the privilege of helping sailors for 11 years,” he says. “My terms of
active duty included a tour on a Spruance-class destroyer and serving as a summary court martial officer.”
In as many different roles as Crosby has played, in as many places, one of his greatest points of pride is close to home: “The year that I was Alabama State Bar Association president, I worked with others to permanently increase annual funding for civil legal aid to low-income Alabamians by millions of dollars,” he recounts.
As with any career that spans so many years, Crosby has seen both incredible change to his profession as well as the world it serves. Some, more than others, are easier to navigate. “Technology has been the biggest change and the biggest challenge in what I do,” he admits. “Our firm has evolved from working only on Baldwin County matters to now also working on statewide, national, and international matters. Legal research, correspondence and filing briefs and pleadings are now done almost exclusively online, so I rely on my younger partners and associates to keep me abreast of the changes.”

32 SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

Still, the reason Crosby pursued a career in law has never wavered, despite challenges and change. “I love people and solving problems, and I am blessed to work with a wonderful group of people,” he says. “My legal assistant, Brenda, is an invaluable member of my team. I hope to practice law for as long as I am able, and I try to glorify God by using the gifts I have been given to serve others.”
Crosby can trace generations of his father’s family back to the area. “I met my wife, Ann, the first week of law school, and we have been married 46 years,” he says. “When Ann and I first moved to Baldwin County, she decided she should always be on her best behavior, because we were ‘related to everyone she met.’”
Crosby and his wife have raised two children and now enjoy time with nine grandchildren. In his spare time, Crosby loves fishing, playing golf and playing the harmonica. “I learned to play the harmonica in college, and I now play in three praise and worship bands,” he notes. “When Ann recently asked what we would take with us if we had to evacuate, I put my harmonicas, my favorite rod and reel and my golf clubs at the top of the list.”
Crosby can take pride in the many lives he has changed during his long and varied career in law, and he looks forward to writing his next chapter in a field to which he has already contributed so much.

How Child Advocacy Centers Rewrote the Rules
STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
Most of us grew up in a home with parents who loved us and took care of our needs: a roof over our heads, three meals a day, a warm bed, and clothes. We didn’t have to wonder where we would sleep or worry over where our next meal would come from. We didn’t have to fear physical or sexual abuse from the people who were supposed to protect us.
But not everyone grows up in that safety.
In the 1980s, the dangers that children faced, each and every day, in their homes became a concern too large to be ignored. The call to answer their cry for help was answered in 1985, when the very first Child Advocacy Center opened in Huntsville. “CAC was formed in response to increasing concerns about child abuse cases and the unique challenges faced by child victims,” explains Niki Whitaker, Executive Director of Baldwin County CAC.
What made CAC and its approach different was simple and yet profound in its efficacy:
“Instead of children being questioned by multiple professionals, the alleged victim talks to one specialty trained interviewer in a child-friendly environment, the CAC,” Whitaker explains of the multidisciplinary model, which was developed through the vision of former congressman Robert E. “Bud” Cramer. “The information gained is then shared with the multidisciplinary team members (MDT), who include members of law enforcement, child protective services, medical and mental health services. The traditional approach, in which children had to recount their traumatic experiences to multiple agencies, proved to be retraumatizing. CACs were developed to streamline the investigative process, provide comprehensive services and minimize further trauma to the child.”
That very first CAC in Huntsville proved its concept, and communities throughout the US began to model their child abuse programs after the CAC/MDT approach. Nearly 40 years later, there are more than 1,100 CACs in 41 countries. In 1986, MDT members from the Baldwin County Department of Human Resources, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, and the District Attorney’s Office founded the Baldwin County Child Advocacy Center (BCCAC), legally known as CARE House. Three years later, the Bay Minette home was donated by the Woodson family and renovated, and the CAC opened to provide services in 1989.
IMPACT & GIVEBACK
44 SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE
“This collaborative approach ensures that child victims receive the necessary services without enduring multiple interviews or daunting legal processes,” she continues.
“The CAC provides services including forensic interviews by skilled forensic interviewers at the BCCAC who conduct child-friendly, non-leading interviews with victims to gather evidence in a sensitive manner. These interviews are crucial in criminal investigations and legal proceedings, minimizing additional trauma for the children involved. We also offer victim and family advocacy, forensic medical exams and therapeutic services through which the BCCAC provides access to trauma-focused counseling and therapy for child victims and their non-offending caregivers as well as community awareness and prevention safety programs.”

“Child Advocacy Centers (CACs) play a vital role in addressing the needs of abused and neglected children, striving to provide them with the care, support, and protection they deserve,” says Whitaker. “Prior to the establishment of these centers, child victims often faced traumatic experiences when seeking help. The lack of coordination between different agencies involved in the investigation and support process hindered effective outcomes for these vulnerable children. Prior to the BCCAC, child protection investigations in Baldwin County were fragmented across multiple agencies, and children faced the arduous task of reliving their traumatic experiences with each agency involved. The BCCAC was established to address these challenges by ensuring a child-centered and collaborative approach to child abuse investigations.
To date, BCCAC has helped over 15,000 children through their intervention services and impacted the lives of over 400,000 children through their prevention work. BCCAC serves more than 300 children on an annual basis through intervention alone and nearly 10,000 children in prevention.

ased on the iconic Tara from Gone with the Wind , the stately Greek Revival home where Ashley and Britton Bonner are raising their three children in Historic Montrose may have been built in the 1990s, but it could easily pass for an authentic antebellum estate. “Windrose,” as its original owners called it, is like a love letter to the movie, right down to the bricks—some of which were sourced from Lowe’s Grand Theatre on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia, where the movie premiered in 1939. Black shutters provide contrast, while three upstairs balconies and massive columns add to the grandeur of the home. Completing the picture of the quintessential Southern estate are the many azalea bushes, which come out in full bloom in March under a canopy of majestic oak trees.

As traditional as the exterior is, it only makes sense that the interior aesthetic offers a nod to that tradition, though it blends the perfect mix of contemporary features and design to achieve a fresh yet classic look to the spaces. Entering through massive wooden French doors at the entryway, the French blue walls of the entry hall offer a rich canvas for beautiful art and furnishings that hint at the design of the rest of the home. Shades of blue are a running theme throughout the spaces—though only as an accent to a largely neutral palette. Art is a priority in these spaces, as well, often ensconced in gilt frames that lend to the richness of the room.
More classic in its layout, the home works perfectly for the Bonner family and the way they live in their home. “The layout is ideal for entertaining, which we love to do,” notes Ashley, who, like her husband, is a practicing attorney. “We host almost all our family holiday gatherings as well as our friends and our children’s friends as much as possible, which is a dream come true for us. We want our home to be family-friendly and also a place where our children have plenty of space as they grow up.”

As often as they entertain, the Bonners naturally need a kitchen that accommodates their needs, and theirs is perfectly designed. Sylacauga marble countertops quarried in Taladega County, Alabama, crown custom white cabinetry, with a coordinating white marble tile running up the backsplash. The center kitchen island boasts a white quartz countertop and a prep sink, while a top-of-the-line stainless steel appliance suite completes the space. Bookending the kitchen are a banquet breakfast nook to one side, with a cozy seating area next to a double-sided gas fireplace under a recessed marble tile mosaic at the other. “I love this spot, which offers extra space for guests to sit with me while I am working in the kitchen preparing meals and holiday dinners,” Ashley says.
Ideal for a family of five, the family room overlooking the pool area in the backyard is their favorite place for movie nights, with a massive sectional sofa as well as popcorn and gumball machines to ensure snacks are always handy. Outside, an outdoor living space includes a wood-burning fireplace, two gas fire pits and two large flat-screen TVs to watch plenty of Troy football.
“Family is priority for us,” says Ashley. “We moved into our home shortly before our first child was born in 2007 and chose this location because raising our children close to our extended family is extremely important.”

As unpopular as lawyers were with Shakespeare, Jackie Castaneda Guinan practices the type of law that would have perhaps made the bard reconsider his stance. A partner and co-owner of Castaneda Planzer, Guinan defends the rights of her clients in immigration law, with offices in Salisbury, Maryland; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Daphne, Alabama.
Admittedly, Guinan’s particular area of practice can weigh heavily on her, with stressful cases that she feels deeply. But waiting for her at home are three people who support her in all that she does. Married to her college sweetheart, Guinan and her husband are raising their two small children—a seven-yearold boy and three-year-old girl—and balancing motherhood with a taxing career. “Being a working mom is always a work in progress,” she says. “I am thankful to have an incredibly involved spouse who is right there in the car line, coaching my son's baseball team and packing lunches with me. We also are incredibly grateful to our family and friends who help us run our household. It truly does take a village.”
Guinan’s children may both be quite young, but their grasp of her responsibilities has become apparent. “I think my kids—especially my son— are beginning to understand what I do and how difficult it can be at times,” she says. “He’s become curious about what I do and my line of work, and he often gives me pep talks. He’ll say, ‘Mom, you can do it. You worked so hard on this case.’ I try to talk to the kids about how hard it can be for working

moms, because sometimes we have to miss out on stuff at school or baseball games. But my friends always make sure to give my kids extra love on those days and send me pictures.”
Guinan’s work has given her a greater level of empathy—a fact which has also shaped how she parents—and the determination that has served her so well in her career has also been something she is passing on to her children. “My parents instilled this value in me early on,” she says. “They drilled into me that I could do anything, as long as I put my mind to it and worked hard. We all have limitations, but I hope that I exemplify that for my kids. I want them to see the work and effort it takes to build a business or achieve your goal, regardless of what that goal might be. I can see it in my son already. He is a very determined little boy.” Guinan’s greatest hope for her children, now and when they are grown, is

that they know how deep her love for them is. “I want them to also remember that I always did my best for them, for my family and for my clients,” she says. “We laugh, we play, but they also see that life isn’t always easy. But they know, as long we have each other, we will be just fine.”
As busy as her days might be, Guinan treasures homework time with her kids. “It may sound very simple, but I like being there for my kids for school activities,” she says. “I value education and I want to be there every step of their journey.”
It’s the little things, however, that mean the most to her—and her children have taught her the value in that. “I’ve learned to take a deep breath and look around and enjoy the small moments,” she says. “Even if it’s just taking a walk at home and seeing how pretty the bay is from a distance.”

The phrase “timing is everything” couldn’t be truer when it comes to love, and when Lauren Berry and James Mack met in high school, the timing wasn’t right… nor was it when they both ended up at Troy University. Nine years after their first meeting, they were finally ready for one another; and after two years of dating, they were ready for forever.
“James had invited some friends from out of town to come stay with us at the beach for the weekend, and he told me that we were going to eat at a nice restaurant that night,” says Lauren, describing that unforgettable April night. “I got dressed up and ready to go, and on the way, James told me he wanted to drive through Gulf State Park to show our guests the park. He suggested we get out and take a picture, and next thing I knew, he was down on one knee!”

Just over a year later, on May 20, 2023, Lauren walked down the aisle at Coastal Arts Center in Orange Beach to meet James at the altar, wearing a fit-and-flare gown with a plunging neckline, sheer bodice adorned with sequined, beaded and chiffon appliques and a chapellength train. After exchanging vows, the couple was pronounced married—though not without some memorable moments along the way: “My dad tripped over my dress as he was giving me away during the ceremony,” Lauren recalls with a laugh. “Also, the week of the wedding, I started feeling sick. I completely lost my voice the night of the rehearsal dinner and was diagnosed with laryngitis the morning of the wedding. After some meds and ‘vocal rest’ for the majority of the day, I was able to say my vows.”

The festivities were made even more special by the live wedding illustrator (Amy Lee Illustration) out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, who did live sketches of the guests as a favor from the wedding, and the musical talents of Lauren’s “absolute favorite cover band,” The Park Band.
After dancing, dinner, and cake that included a delicious groom’s cake from Sugar House Custom Cakes, the newly married Macks were sent off to honeymoon in Antigua. Back home in Orange Beach, the couple look forward to all that life together brings.

Thanks to my mom's endless supply of paper and crayons, I fell in love with art. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in Art Education, I became an art teacher at The Miller Fine Arts Magnet School in Macon, GA and the Director of Art at the Georgia Children’s Museum.
After moving to the Eastern Shore in 2004, I found my inspiration from the bay and the way it changes with the light. I capture the coast, the beauty of the bay and the shore through a variety of techniques and mediums. My style is defined by imagery full of texture, life, and movement. The use of color and line is another essential aspect of my work. I believe color is a language that can evoke emotions that words do not express. I have always been interested in taking an intuitive approach to color, focusing on deep hues and bold lines to capture the spirit of whatever image I am depicting.
Some of my pieces are permanently displayed at Fairhope East Elementary School, and I am honored that my work was chosen to appear on the Christmas card for The City of Fairhope in 2021. I also enjoy gifting illustrations of the homes I sell as a realtor with Bellator Real Estate in Fairhope. I strive to maintain my individual artistic character, letting my commitment to the arts shine through with everything I do.

The new representative is a graduate of the University of South Alabama where she majored in Political Science. She’s also a former Miss Saraland High School titleholder.
Burrell’s duties are effective immediately. She’ll spend the next year serving Alabama at public appearances, motivating others, and furthering her community service initiative. Burrell’s initiative, ‘SAVE-A-STEM’, encourages minority students and students in underfunded schools to engage in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. She will represent Alabama at the Miss America competition later this year.
