Colleen Seeley

Meet Colleen Seeley, a dynamic force in our community and the Founder and Creative Director of Ignited Fusion, an organization that helps individuals ignite their passions and turn them into reality. With over a decade of experience in her role, Colleen has built a platform for creativity, collaboration, and connection. At the core of her work lies a passion for cultivating relationships and learning from diverse perspectives, ensuring that her projects uplift and inspire.

When asked about the mission of Ignited Fusion, Colleen is clear: “Igniting passions to fuse endless possibilities…” Through workshops, camps, and events, the organization empowers individuals to take their dreams and turn them into action. Colleen has created an environment where imagination sparks innovation, and endless possibilities are realized.

Her career has been anything but a straight path. “It’s been a journey filled with twists, turns, and unexpected opportunities,” she explains. Rather

than viewing challenges as setbacks, she sees them as opportunities for growth. Each experience has led her closer to her purpose, which is to build something meaningful and create spaces where people feel seen and inspired.

What Colleen loves most about her work is its diversity—whether it’s providing solutions, creating moments of joy, or simply being there when people need support. However, like many leaders, Colleen has faced challenges along the way. The greatest, she says, is silencing the doubts and “what ifs” that can sometimes arise. Despite this, she has learned to focus on her positive influence, leaning into daily habits that keep her grounded and on track.

Her passion remains unwavering, despite the inevitable obstacles that come with any meaningful endeavor. “Knowing the purpose behind what I do keeps the fire burning,” Colleen says. That purpose has driven her to continue building something she knows is making a real difference in people’s lives.

Having lived in the area for 30 years, Colleen has deep roots in the community. She loves watching the area grow and change, but for her, this place will always be home. It’s the shared history and the strong sense of community that make it so special.

In her personal life, Colleen enjoys music, playing the saxophone as a creative outlet. She has also taken up pickleball, joining a vibrant community of women who support each other both on and off the court. Colleen’s love for connection shines through, whether she’s sharing laughs on the pickleball court or making time for family.

Colleen has always been passionate about giving back to her community. From childhood, her family supported disaster relief efforts through the American Red Cross. Over the years, she’s also been involved with local organizations such as the United Way, Hospice Foundation of the South, and Ronald McDonald House Charities.

In February 2023, my life changed when I was diagnosed with invasive distal carcinoma ER + PR+ HER2-, stage 1. As a mother, my biggest challenge was telling my kids. I didn’t want them to worry or think that I was going to die, so finding the right words was incredibly difficult. Facing cancer is terrifying, but I was determined to do whatever needed to be done to rid myself of it.

To other women facing a cancer diagnosis, my advice is to take things one step at a time. Focus on what needs to be done and trust that you’re stronger than you know. Surround yourself with supportive people, and don’t hesitate to lean on them when you need to. You Night and similar support

groups can be incredibly helpful, offering community and encouragement during such a challenging time.

Since my treatment, my life has changed in so many ways. I’ve met wonderful women who’ve faced cancer just like I have, and together we share stories of our struggles and triumphs. I’ve found peace and joy in activities like gardening, which has become a form of therapy for me. It helps me relax and focus on the present. Spending time with my family, knowing we’ve come through this journey together, has been the greatest blessing of all.

“Focus on what needs to be done and trust that you’re stronger than you know.”

In September 2022, my life took a drastic turn when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The overwhelming fear, shock, and anger hit me all at once. Cancer not only invades your body but also brings a storm of emotions that are hard to navigate. Since then, I’ve undergone four surgeries, each one bringing its own set of challenges.

During my treatment, finding ways to cope with the stress and anxiety was essential. Yoga became a refuge for me, as did walking and jogging. These activities helped clear my mind and reduce the stress that would often feel overwhelming. Being active allowed me to regain a sense of control over my body when so much seemed out of my hands.

To other women newly diagnosed with cancer, my biggest advice is to focus on what you can control. You are your own biggest cheerleader, and it’s important to remember that. Surround yourself with people who will lift you up, and don’t be afraid to lean on them.

Being part of You Night has been a tremendous blessing. The sisterhood and friendships I’ve formed there have become a strong support system for me. Having other survivors who understand your journey is invaluable. We share not only our struggles but our victories, and that sense of community is priceless.

Godbolt Asja

On March 9, 2023, Asja Godbolt heard words she never imagined would be associated with her name: Stage 1 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma HER2+, a breast cancer diagnosis. The news was devastating. Three tumors had formed in her left breast, and Asja was filled with fear and uncertainty. But from that very day, she met with her team of doctors at Ochsner in Covington, LA, and embarked on a journey that would redefine her strength.

Her coping mechanisms became her anchors: prayer, meditation, acceptance, and therapy. A program called The Geeometry 4-A, created by her mental health coach, Gee Alford, taught her how to navigate her diagnosis with grace.

“Acceptance, Accountability, Awareness, and Adjustment,” Asja explains, became her guiding principles. She meditated morning and night, practicing gratitude for every moment, no matter how difficult.

One of her greatest sources of strength came from the You Night Empowerment Sisterhood, a community that reminded her she was more than her diagnosis. “They encouraged me to be bigger than my cancer,” Asja says. Her Ochsner team, from phlebotomists to oncologists, helped her stay focused on the end goal: life after cancer.

“Acceptance, Accountability, Awareness, and Adjustment.”

In August 2023, I was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma breast cancer, stage one. Though the diagnosis was terrifying, I felt blessed not to need radiation or chemotherapy. Instead, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy with a DIEP flap in September 2023, followed by a revision surgery in June 2024. Throughout this journey, my hope rested in Jesus. I knew people were lifting me up in prayer, and I found strength in my faith.

For anyone newly diagnosed with cancer, I highly recommend getting involved with support programs like You Night . They provide guidance and community, helping you navigate the path ahead. My faith and knowing that I would eventually feel better

and be able to hold my grandchildren kept me hopeful and moving forward.

Sharing my story has been an important part of my healing process. It’s helped me reflect on my journey and share hope with others. I want people to know that support and comfort are available, and the greatest comfort comes from knowing Jesus is always with you.

You Night has felt like a family to me, offering strength and comfort through the journey. I am grateful for this sisterhood and the support it has given me.

Ask How to Lose Weight the Expert

As a plastic surgeon, I regularly see patients seeking tummy tucks or liposuction, who could benefit from weight loss prior to surgery. While tummy tucks and liposuction can drastically improve a patient’s figure, they do very little towards reducing a patient’s weight. As the patient’s body mass index or BMI increases over 25, their risk of having surgical or post-surgical complications increases too. For these patients, weight loss prior to surgery not only improves patients’ cosmetic results but also reduces the risk of complications during and after surgery.

After researching the use and efficacy of semaglutide for weight loss, I began using this medication to assist my patients in obtaining their ideal weight. The results were unprecedented with both doctor and patient excited about the changes we were seeing. But even more important than their new self-confidence was that the patients were now healthier than they were before!

SEMAGLUTIDE: A BRIEF OVERVIEW

Semaglutide is more commonly known by its trade names Ozempic®and Wegovy®, while tirzepatide is commonly known as Mounjaro®. Both semaglutide and tirzepatide stimulate receptors for a gut hormone released after eating, called Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 (“GLP-1”). The main functions of GLP-1 are as follows:

1. Stimulates insulin secretion, thus, lowering blood glucose.

2. Slows the emptying of the stomach; and 3. Works on receptors in the brain to give a feeling of fullness or satiety.

Mounjaro® adds a second hormone receptor agonist called Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide (“GIP”), which also increases glucose-induced insulin secretion and helps regulate bodyweight but, unlike GLP-1, adds fat and energy production as a target. The combination of GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists is significantly more effective than either GLP-1 RA or GIP -1 RA alone, for:

• Weight loss.

• Reduction of HbA1c (“hemoglobin A1C,” a form of hemoglobin that is chemically linked to sugar and is measured by the amount of blood sugar, or glucose, attached to an individual’s hemoglobin); and

• Lowering blood glucose levels.

WHY IS THIS EXCITING?

Obesity is now recognized for what it is: a legitimate chronic medical condition that is directly related to metabolic hormone insufficiencies. According to the most recent statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”), approximately 4 out of every 10 adults and approximately 1 out of every 5 children in America suffer from obesity. Knowing what hormones lead to obesity and creating drugs to target them can helps make obesity a disease of the past and may, lengthen life spans by decreasing the morbidities related to obesity, like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The implications of drugs like semaglutide and tirzepatide are momentous, as a substantial portion of our population suffers from obesity and stands to benefit from these innovative treatments.

WHO SHOULD ASK THEIR DOCTOR ABOUT THESE TREATMENTS?

1. Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes; and/or

2. Individuals with a body mass index (“BMI”) over 26.

3. Individuals with polycystic ovary syndrome.

4. Individuals with metabolic syndrome.

** Although these drugs are not FDA-approved for all the medical conditions above, they can be prescribed off-label if your physician thinks you may benefit.

HOW ARE THESE DRUGS PRESCRIBED?

A physician must evaluate a patients’ need for treatment and provide a prescription if treatment is warranted. Ultimately, every insurer and every insurance policy may vary on their terms of coverage for these medications. However, most will require your physician to obtain prior authorization and will require prior treatment for type 2 diabetes. Name-brand drugs Ozempic®, Wegovy®, and Mounjaro® are available at your local pharmacy and covered by insurance with varying levels of copays. If not covered by insurance, the name brands will cost approximately $900 or more per month. Currently a compounded prescription of semaglutide or tirzepatide is available at a lower price range of $190-$400/ month depending on dosing. This is available until the shortage of the brand name products is ended.

** In an effort to best safeguard patients, the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy has instituted sanctions for any prescriber or pharmacy that distributes anything other than FDA-approved semaglutide and tirzepatide from approved compounding pharmacies. The pharmacy and product utilized by Michele Cooper MD currently uses those approved providers.

Natasha Buckholtz, Founder

Laramie McLain’s breast cancer journey is one of immense strength and resilience. Diagnosed with two forms of cancer—Stage 3 Inflammatory Breast Cancer and Stage 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, Triple Negative— she endured 64 weeks of chemotherapy and four weeks of radiation, administered twice daily, a rare and challenging aspect of her treatment. The biggest challenge she faced was staying positive amid the fear of dying and the thought of her children seeing her go through this battle. But with a strong support system, including friends like Marva Slimp and Betty Bruce, and her Lee Road community, Laramie found the strength to keep fighting.

Her children were her biggest motivation to keep pushing forward. “I just wanted to see

McLainLaramie Hammac Noel

In September 2022, Noel Hammac’s world was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with Stage 3A invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast. Her treatment plan included six rounds of chemotherapy, 17 rounds of immunotherapy, and numerous surgeries. Already living with multiple autoimmune disorders, the chemotherapy took an especially harsh toll on her body, making day-to-day life a struggle. Yet, through it all, Noel chose resilience.

Staying hopeful wasn’t easy, but it was a conscious decision. “Why not me?” she asked herself, embracing the mindset that she had to face the battle head-on. Her mother moved in to help care for her during treatment, and while depression lingered, it never fully overtook her. One of Noel’s greatest strengths throughout

more of their milestones,” she shared. Laramie also found immense support at Mary Bird Cancer Center, where her care team, especially Nurse Alicia Bermudez, helped her focus on herself during treatment. Physical therapy at Geaux Fight, despite her initial reluctance, became a vital part of her recovery.

“Let

people help you. This is the time to put yourself first.”

To anyone newly diagnosed, Laramie’s advice is clear: “Let people help you. This is the time to put yourself first.” She emphasizes the importance of accepting help and the guidance of your medical team. Her journey, though difficult, has shown her how strong and worthy she is, a message she now shares with others.

“Let your people love on you and spoil you.”

her journey was her support system. She had been a volunteer for You Night since 2017, long before her diagnosis, and the organization’s network of women rallied around her in love and prayers.

Noel’s advice to others facing a similar journey is to be informed about their treatments and side effects and, most importantly, not to refuse help. “Let your people love on you and spoil you,” she advises. For her, letting others care for her was crucial in overcoming the hardest moments.

Sharing her story has been vital to Noel’s healing process, allowing her to bond deeply with other survivors who truly understand the journey.

AndersonSunny

In April 2023, Sunny Anderson’s world shifted when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. By June, she underwent a bilateral mastectomy and began her recovery. “The hardest part was telling my three adult children,” Sunny recalls. “They had just lost their dad to pancreatic cancer in 2020, and I didn’t want them to relive that pain.” But with time, her children saw that Sunny’s journey was different from their father’s.

Sunny’s strength was bolstered by the support of her dedicated healthcare team. “My doctors and their staff were incredible,” she says, acknowledging the critical role they played in navigating the challenges with her insurance. “They fought for me when my insurance wouldn’t.” Sunny offers

simple yet powerful advice to others facing a cancer diagnosis: “Don’t give up! If you need help, ask for it. Be kind to yourself.” She encourages others to seek support through therapists or groups and to make space for self-care, whether that’s getting a massage or spending time with loved ones.

Joining You Night allowed Sunny to meet other women who have walked similar paths. “These women are so supportive and would give you the shirt off their backs if you needed it,” she reflects.

“It’s important not to go through this alone.” For Sunny, connection has been a vital part of her healing.

“Don’t give up! If you need help, ask for it. Be kind to yourself.”

Debra

Friloux

Debra Friloux’s journey with Triple Negative Breast Cancer began on December 20, 2023. She faced 16 rounds of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, during which 12 lymph nodes were removed. Remarkably, Debra encountered no major obstacles, staying focused on fighting the disease and continuing to enjoy life with her family. Surrounded by her supportive husband, children, grandchildren, and friends, she never worried about meals, a clean house, or laundry.

Staying positive was Debra’s key to coping. She leaned on a Facebook group of women who shared her diagnosis and joined You Night, a community of cancer survivors. These connections gave her a safe space

to share her feelings and feel understood. Debra advises other women facing a cancer diagnosis to remain positive and find a support group that makes them feel comfortable.

Though less active than before, Debra found solace in walking during her chemotherapy and crafting wreaths when the weather was too hot. Sharing her story has been a healing process, and she hopes it brings others hope. You Night allowed her to build friendships and gain perspective on the different experiences survivors face, all while reinforcing that “you’ve got this.”

“Remain positive & find a support group that makes you feel comfortable.”

Jenny

SUPER MOM CARR

Jenny Carr, owner & buyer for The Next boutique in Downtown Covington, has spent years cultivating her love for fashion into a successful career. At just 24, she opened her first women’s boutique on Metairie Road. “Looking back, I had no idea what I was doing,” Jenny laughs. Yet, over time, her passion, perseverance, and willingness to learn along the way have built a thriving business, rooted in her commitment to bringing curated, stylish pieces to her customers.

“Jake is an old soul who loves his family and friends. He’s sweet as sugar, since day one.”

At the heart of Jenny’s life is her 12-year-old son, Jake. A 6th grader at Christ Episcopal, Jake is involved in many activities, including the Beta Club, basketball, and wrestling. Jenny describes him as compassionate, strong, and full of conviction, with a heart of gold. “Jake is an old soul who loves his family and friends. He’s sweet as sugar, since day one,” she proudly shares. Jenny and Jake share a special Christmas tradition, attending a performance at the Saenger Theatre together each year—a memory she cherishes deeply.

Family is central to Jenny’s world, including her partner Corey and his two daughters, Amanda (29) and Aubrey (21). Jenny lovingly describes Corey as her rock and expresses gratitude for their blended family. “Every day is a new day of adventures!” she says, recognizing the joy and challenges that come with balancing her career and family. And of course, they couldn’t do it all without their beloved Jelly, Angele Darling.

Jenny’s role as a mother figure began long before Jake. At the age of 26, she stepped in as a mother to her younger brother David, who was 17 and still in high school. “It really prepared me for having a boy!” she reflects. Now, David lives in Nashville with his wife Leigha and their two daughters, Addie Patricia (named in honor of their mother) and Jordan Leigh. Although they live miles apart, Jenny and David maintain a close bond. “We talk every day, vacation together, and make it a priority to connect so our children grow up together,” she says.

For Jenny, being a working mom is all about showing strength and setting an example for Jake. “Jake sees me doing it all—working hard and supporting him in every way,” she says. Jenny also emphasizes the importance of having fun while doing it. She believes it’s crucial for children to see that parents aren’t perfect. “It’s okay to make mistakes. That’s how we learn. When we know better, we do better, and I try to instill that in him.”

At 45, Jenny is most proud of her commitment to family, especially the bond she shares with her 96-year-old grandmother, whom she and Jake visit every Sunday. “Family is everything,” she says. And for Jenny, it’s not Jake’s accomplishments that make her proud, but the love and compassion he shows to those around him. “I love him for his huge heart,” she beams.

Jenny Carr’s story is one of resilience, love, and devotion—both to her family and her business. Through all the lessons she’s learned and traditions she’s created, she continues to show Jake the true meaning of strength, compassion, and joy.

Sarah Wagar Hickman

Empowering Medical Malpractice Victims.

Sarah Wagar Hickman has dedicated nearly her entire professional career as a trial attorney to helping people secure full and fair compensation for injuries and deaths resulting from medical malpractice. A native of the Northshore area, Sarah graduated from Mandeville High School in 2004, where she excelled in women’s soccer and earned recognition as an NCAA Gatorade high school AllAmerican. She went on to graduate from LSU in 2008 and completed her law degree at Loyola University College of Law in 2014.

“Medical malpractice is the third leading cause of death in the United States, surpassing deaths from auto accidents and gun violence.”

In 2018, Sarah and her father founded Wagar Hickman, LLC, in Mandeville, focusing their practice on medical malpractice cases. Through this work, Sarah has gained a deep understanding of Louisiana's outdated and stringent medical malpractice laws and their impact on victims of catastrophic injuries caused by medical negligence.

In 2022, Sarah co-founded the Patient Rights Advocacy Forum (PRAF), an organization dedicated to advocating for reforms to the Louisiana Medical Malpractice Act. Currently, Louisiana law caps the damages that negligent hospitals, nursing homes, and healthcare professionals must pay to victims at $100,000—a limit established in 1975 with no adjustment for inflation.

“Most people aren’t aware of these damage caps until they become victims, and by then it's too late,” Sarah explained. “These caps only protect the medical industry and have been in place for nearly 50 years. Medical malpractice is the third leading cause of death in the United States, surpassing deaths from auto accidents and gun violence. Louisiana’s malpractice laws are the most severe in the country. Louisianians deserve better.”

Despite her passion for her work, Sarah often tells people, “I hope you never need us.” She emphasizes that without stronger medical malpractice laws that fairly compensate victims for life-altering injuries or death, patient safety remains a low priority for many healthcare providers in Louisiana. “Billion-dollar hospital chains and other institutions need to be held accountable for the mistakes that ruin lives. That’s why I helped found PRAF. Visit our website at www.patientrightsla.com to learn more about what we're doing.”

TIFFANY KING FROM BLOGGER TO DIGITAL MARKETING EXPERT

Tiffany Morgan-King began her journey in the digital marketing world in 2015 as a freelance writer for Northshore Parent. Encouraged by her mentor, she launched her fashion and lifestyle blog, We Five Kings, in 2018. As her children grew older, Tiffany’s focus shifted from parenting stories to more creative endeavors in fashion and lifestyle. In 2024, she rebranded the blog to Tiffany King Creative, transforming it into a hub for all things creative, including personal brand consulting, her podcast, and the Friday is for the Girls lunch series.

In 2020, amid the pandemic, Tiffany shifted her focus to help small local businesses adapt to the digital landscape.

“Many businesses relied heavily on foot traffic,” Tiffany explains. “When that disappeared, they struggled to establish an online presence.” Drawing from her experience as an influencer and content creator, Tiffany started guiding businesses on how to build their own digital niche.

This shift led to the creation of The Organized Social, a fullservice digital marketing firm. Tiffany’s approach offers clients the flexibility of a consultant with the feel of a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) integrated into their team. “I strive to become so ingrained in each client’s business that it feels like I’m a part of their team,” Tiffany explains. “Being involved in the day-to-day operations allows me to deliver tailored strategies that truly resonate with their goals.”

In today’s market, personal branding has never been more important. Consumers increasingly prefer to buy from individuals rather than corporate-run accounts.

“People want to connect with real people,” Tiffany states.

“No one does your job like you do, and curating an online presence around your niche is key to standing out and building your community.” By emphasizing authenticity and engagement, Tiffany helps clients establish personal brands that resonate with their audience.

The Organized Social provides a wide range of services, including social media strategy, SEO, website design, Google Ads management, paid advertising, and professional videography. Their innovative approach to personal branding has made them a standout in the industry, offering clients a personalized, results-driven experience.

This year, Tiffany’s husband, Justin, left his corporate job to join The Organized Social. While Tiffany is creative and bold, Justin brings a logical and pragmatic approach. Together, they offer clients the best of both worlds— combining strategic creativity with a data-driven mindset to deliver exceptional results.

“I strive to become so ingrained in each client’s business that it feels like I’m a part of their team,”

ParkerJerry

In September 2012, Ms. Jerry Parker was diagnosed with Stage II, Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, an aggressive breast cancer. She faced two surgeries, eight rounds of chemotherapy, and 35 radiation treatments. Although her left breast mass was benign, the cancerous tumor in her right breast resulted in the removal of seven lymph nodes, leading to lymphedema in her right arm. Enduring numerous side effects such as fatigue, hair loss, and memory issues, Jerry’s journey was full of challenges. “Cancer may have changed my life, but it also taught me the power of hope, community, and love,” she shares.

Despite the pain, Jerry found hope through faith, which gave her courage and strength to keep moving forward. She leaned on her

family, friends, co-workers, and community, especially through organizations like You Night. Their love, prayers, financial help, and support were invaluable.

As a 12-year survivor, Jerry embraces her “new normal” with gratitude. She engages in creative activities like singing, walking, and designing clothes, which bring her joy and healing. Through her ongoing involvement with You Night, she continues to uplift others, advocating for kindness, hope, and strength through life’s challenges. Her journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of faith, love, and community.

“Cancer taught me the power of hope, community, and love.”

Britta

Rabalais

Britta Rabalais' journey through breast cancer was one of strength, resilience, and deep determination. Diagnosed with breast cancer, Britta underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy followed by a double mastectomy with DIEP reconstruction. The toughest moments during her treatment were not easy, but her family kept her grounded and motivated. “I wanted to get better for them,” she says. Connecting with women who had faced similar challenges gave her hope and a sense of community, reminding her that life could return to normal.

Her biggest support system was her family, who stood by her side, and women she met along the way who understood the emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis. Through

these connections, Britta found herself joining You Night, a community of survivors who helped her navigate the mental and emotional aspects of recovery.

Her advice to others is simple yet powerful: take your time, listen to your body, and reach out when you need help. Britta found joy in simple activities like watching standup comedy and crafting, though postchemo neuropathy sometimes gets in the way. Sharing her story has been cathartic, a reminder that while cancer is part of her journey, it doesn’t define her. Life after cancer is busy—and that’s her victory.

“Take your time, listen to your body, and reach out when you need help.”

HornsbyJessica

In August 2023, Jessica Hornsby’s life took an unexpected turn when a routine mammogram revealed she had Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. By September, she had undergone a mastectomy of her right breast and lymph node removal. Fortunately, the cancer was contained and had not spread.

Despite these challenges, Jessica remained hopeful, drawing strength from her husband and 11-year-old son. “Life doesn’t stop when you get a cancer diagnosis, but everything you thought you cared about changes,” she reflects. Her family became her anchor. “My son wiped away my tears, even when I didn’t think he saw them. They were my safe place.”

Since her diagnosis, Jessica’s life has

changed in profound ways. What began as coping mechanisms, like throwing away harmful items in her home, turned into intentional living. She stopped drinking alcohol, prioritized physical activity, and strengthened her spiritual health. “The day I thought was a death sentence became the first day of my new life,” she says.

“The day I thought was a death sentence became the first day of my new life.”

Jessica has always believed in the power of sharing her story. After overcoming infertility 11 years ago, she knew the importance of offering hope. Now, she continues to share her journey, encouraging women not to give up. “God isn’t done with miracles yet,” she says.

LEADING THE FIGHT AGAINST CHILDHOOD CANCER

Since its founding in 1962 by entertainer Danny Thomas, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has remained steadfast in its mission: to ensure that no child dies in the dawn of life. As a global leader in pediatric healthcare, St. Jude is dedicated to understanding, treating, and defeating childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. This extraordinary institution provides cuttingedge treatments & innovative research breakthroughs, all at no cost to the families. As St. Jude continues to advance its lifesaving work, the hospital relies on community support to fuel its impact.

IMPACT & GIVE BACK

The programs offered by St. Jude are vast and comprehensive. With a dual mission of patient care and research, the hospital provides the highest quality treatments to children, teens, and young adults facing life-threatening diseases. The organization combines standard medical treatments with investigational therapies to ensure patients receive the best possible care. Beyond the walls of St. Jude, the institution shares its research and treatment protocols freely with doctors and hospitals worldwide, creating a ripple effect of progress.

One of St. Jude’s most inspiring success stories is its role in raising the overall childhood cancer survival rate from a staggering 20% when the hospital first opened, to over 80% today. This achievement reflects the hospital’s relentless pursuit of improving outcomes for children worldwide. With an unwavering commitment to progress, St. Jude remains focused on their ultimate goal: no child should die from cancer.

Community involvement is at the heart of the St. Jude mission. Residents of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast region can actively support this cause through a variety of initiatives. One of the most

anticipated is the annual St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway in New Orleans, a major fundraiser that invites participants to reserve tickets for a chance to win a dream home. Other local events include the Legends for Charity Super Bowl dinner, school fundraisers, and fitness challenges like the St. Jude Walk/Run in Baton Rouge. Every dollar raised through these efforts helps fund St. Jude’s world-class care and cutting-edge research.

The upcoming Legends for Charity dinner, scheduled for February 6, 2025, in New Orleans, is set to honor sports journalist Hannah Storm. This event, along with others, showcases the powerful partnership between St. Jude and the Gulf Coast community. Support from local businesses, like Hyman Bartolo Jr. Contractors Inc., who have partnered with St. Jude for 10 years, further strengthens the hospital’s ability to expand its reach.

St. Jude’s long-term vision is clear: to raise the overall survival rate of childhood cancer from 80% to 100%. And with continued community support, that vision is within reach. Every donation and event participation fuels the mission to help every child live.

Direct FROM THE GROWERto You

The idea for Garden Spot of Mandeville began decades ago when Judy King started growing ferns in greenhouses on her property, in Bush, Louisiana. Ferns take a while to grow to a size in which they are sellable and so Tommy, King’s husband, started growing vegetables to sell since they are faster and smaller. It was at this time he realized the potential of growing annuals and perennials and selling them to friends.

Word began to spread and people from all over started coming to the greenhouses in search of beautiful plants. They eventually had the idea to open The Garden Spot of Franklinton, an outdoor store created to sell locally grown, quality plants. The store became very popular, enticing people from all over and so the King’s decided to open a store in Mandeville to reach a larger audience.

Thus Garden Spot of Mandeville was born and today both locations are run by Tommy and Judy’s daughter, Sandy, and her husband Tony. Just as they started, annuals and perennials are still grown at the local greenhouses and both locations continue to serve their communities well with high quality, locally grown plant materials and expert customer service.

Garden Spot of Mandeville is a family-owned retail garden center, offering customers a wide selection of high-quality products. Our annuals and perennials are grown at our nursery located in Bush, Louisiana, and our shrubs and trees are sourced from local nurseries so you can rest assured that your plants are coming directly from the grower to you.

A LOVE THAT SPANS THE GLOBE

BROOKE + CHRISTIAN

Brooke Barisich, now Brooke Jackson, and her husband Christian Jackson’s love story is truly one for the ages—a tale that spans continents and reflects their shared passions, heart for service, and love for adventure. Their wedding on November 11, 2023, was the culmination of a whirlwind romance, one they orchestrated while living across multiple countries.

Photos by Josh Williams Photography

Brooke and Christian met in Haiti in February 2022, where their individual missions aligned and their hearts intertwined. After dating for just over a year, Christian pulled off an extraordinary proposal in Dallas, Texas. It was a plan full of love, friends, family, and the perfect surprise. Brooke thought she was on her way to one of Christian’s annual trips with friends in Colorado, only to find herself being whisked away to a beautiful setup at White Rock Lake, where Christian had a proposal filled with candles, flowers, and photos waiting for her. Not only were both their families there to celebrate, but Christian had also gathered 50 of their closest friends from around the world to join in the festivities that weekend. Brooke describes it as “one of my favorite memories” and a testament to the thoughtfulness and love Christian poured into every detail.

Their wedding was nothing short of unique. With Brooke hailing from Louisiana, Christian from Texas, and their love story rooted in Haiti, they wanted to incorporate all these elements into their celebration. The wedding took place at the stunning Riverview Room in New Orleans, with a rooftop terrace ceremony and an indoor reception. The couple’s love for adventure and travel was reflected in their decorations and even their wedding favors— hand-painted magnets from a local market in their Haitian village.

The couple also found creative ways to honor their home states. For Texas, they served BBQ brisket and Ranch Waters, while for Louisiana, they delighted guests with a traditional second line parade, introducing many out-of-town friends to this New Orleans wedding staple. And for Haiti, they went above and beyond, driving crates of their favorite Haitian beer, Prestige, from Miami to Louisiana so their guests could toast with it.

Brooke’s dress was a long-sleeved lace gown with a beautiful illusion neckline and an open back, perfectly reflecting her elegant style. The wedding color palette featured neutral tones with sage green and blush accents, creating a soft, romantic ambiance. The threetiered cake followed suit, featuring wedding cake (almond), red velvet, and chocolate flavors with simple floral accents.

Despite planning their wedding from four different countries and juggling international travel, the couple pulled off a celebration that was deeply personal and filled with meaning. The planning process, though chaotic, became another chapter in their adventure-filled life together.

After the wedding, Brooke and Christian honeymooned in Belize, splitting their time between an island resort for relaxation and the jungle for adventure—perfectly suited for their shared love of new experiences.

Brooke and Christian’s journey has come full circle. After living together in Haiti until March 2024, they spent a few months traveling internationally before finally settling into their new home in Austin, Texas. Their love story is a beautiful example of how love can flourish no matter the distance, and how shared experiences can create an unbreakable bond.

Their wedding day was not just a celebration of their union but a reflection of the rich and adventurous life they’ve built together. From Haiti to Texas, they’ve found ways to honor each of the places and people that hold a special place in their hearts.
