n e e b s a h y l Piggly Wigg . . . r e v e r o f e c n i s L A C O L Piggly Wiggly grocery stores on the Gulf Coast have been a family business for more than 50 years. We love the food business and the opportunity it gives us to serve the people and communities around us. We are all about Southern hospitality, friendly service and delivering the best food to our customers. I am honored to continue the legacy of Family Owned Since Forever, overseeing our 15 grocery stores along the Gulf Coast.

What makes Piggly Wiggly special? Piggly Wiggly is a unique shopping experience that truly represents “local supporting local.” We are a family owned and operated group of stores that believe in giving back to the community in every sense of the word - local charities, churches, organizations, and municipalities.

Why is it important to you to give back to the community?

Eugenie and Kamal (KC) Constantine Owner - Baldwin and Mobile County

Community is at the center of what we do. It’s important to give back to the communities we serve because we believe in the areas we serve. Our community members make up our stores, too. All of our employees are a part of these special communities.

What do you love about the communities your stores serve? The communities we serve still believe in shopping and supporting local. Without them, we wouldn’t be here!

Are there any changes for Piggly Wiggly about which you are excited? Like our Fairhope store, we are always giving local businesses the opportunity to start up in our stores, like PigFish Seafood and Flying Pig Coffee Co. Our newest store in Mobile, located at Airport and University Blvd, will follow the same footprint.

What do you hope people say about Piggly Wiggly? I hope that people continue to say that Piggly Wiggly is the most unique, family friendly shopping experience in Mobile and Baldwin Counties.

Shop at Piggly Wiggly. Support your community. At Piggly Wiggly, we believe in supporting and investing in the communities we serve.

“I’ve always believed that how we treat animals says the most about who we are as people. I love animals and feel a connection with them.” While Abby Pruet may have majored in English, the USA alum holds a role that’s less about words and more about action. Over the past seven years, she has served as executive director of the Baldwin Humane Society, managing the organization’s daily activities and directing it toward achieving the goals of their overall mission and vision as well as fundraising, managing BHS’s budget and strategic planning. “As is the case with most non-profit roles, being the executive director means I often have to wear a lot of different hats on any given day,” Pruet says. “We always joke that it’s never boring here at the Baldwin Humane Society!” Since assuming executive directorship, Pruet has updated much of the technology that BHS was previously using as well as beginning the process of streamlining how the organization communicates with its donors and tracks important data. “I’ve also worked with the staff and organization leadership to put more focus on community outreach like our public medical assistance program and community Trap-Neuter-Return program,” she says. “We all know Baldwin County is growing at an accelerated rate. My vision for the organization is that we continue to evolve our services and programs to meet the needs of our community. I would love to see us not only grow our adoption and pet transport program, but also find more ways to proactively help citizens and their pets. We have programs that help with pet food, facilitating vet care for low-income families, and spaying/neutering community pets. My goal is to make all these programs more accessible and impactful.” 16

SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

The passion Pruet feels for her work is obvious—as is her dedication to seeing the organization accomplish the mission for which it was created. Still, she faces a number of challenges. “The emotional toll of working in animal welfare can be high,” she admits. “There are days when you just don’t think you can walk through the door and be faced with all these heartwrenching situations. It’s really the people I work with that make it so much better. We are all here because we believe in the mission, and it’s comforting to have someone to share that emotional burden we sometimes carry with us at work. “Kindness is easy to show but hard to come by these days,” Pruet goes on. “A lot of people see stray animals as a nuisance. On a certain level I can understand that, but we, as a community, can do better when it comes to homeless pets. It’s really encouraging that there are so many amazing organizations like ours working with city and county leadership to improve the situation, but we need more involvement from our community to really make an impactful difference for these animals.” In her free time, Pruet prefers low-key activities and a bit of escapism. “I’m a simple gal,” she says. “I love video games, sci-fi novels and costume making for cosplay conventions. Most weekends you’ll find me playing video games with my boyfriend or spending time with my family, including our three cats, Spooky, Larry Anderson and Nibble.” Pruet lives in midtown Mobile with her boyfriend and their cats and maintains a close relationship with her parents and her older sister and her family, all of whom live in Daphne.

IMPACT & GIVE BACK

Feeding is

Believing STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

Have you ever been hungry? For the thousands of local families we serve, the answer is yes!

D

eann Servos’s recent speech poses the question, a question that most of us never ponder. We pass by homeless or hungry people on the street each day and give little thought to how we would survive, being in their situation.

But that very thought was one that haunted the mind and heart of three very determined, very Christ-filled women: Deann Servos, Christy Inabinett and Sheri McCrory. And so, in 2003, they came together to found Prodisee Pantry as an outreach ministry of Spanish Fort United Methodist Church. At their first distribution on November 18, 2003, 16 other volunteers helped to box up and share Thanksgiving dinner with those in the community who needed to be fed. We bring hope by feeding the physical, emotional and spiritual hunger of Baldwin County families in need. Our compassionate volunteers provide food, hugs and encouragement to 10,000 families annually. Currently, an average of 900 families visit each month seeking help from Prodisee Pantry for the most basic human needs, food and a kind word. Most say they never thought they would ever have to ask for help. But hunger is invisible. It is your neighbor. It is the young mom with two kids in line at the grocery store with just a loaf of bread. It is the elderly woman in the pew next to you at church. Their inspiration was simple and continues to be, after 20 years: to feed both invisible and visible hunger with food, faith and family. Which, essentially, is where the name “Prodisee” was born. “We are referencing the prodigal son story in the Bible where the father welcomes his son back, hence the PRODI prefix,” explains Servos. “The SEE comes from Wesleyan concept that we can see Christ’s love through our good works of service.” 24

SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

At its core, Prodisee Pantry’s mission is based on Matthew 25:35: “I was hungry, and you gave me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger, and you welcomed me.” Over the past 20 years, Baldwin County families have visited Prodisee Pantry over 208,000 times, with more than 510,000 individual visits for spiritual, emotional and physical food. As a charitable organization, Prodisee Pantry is funded by the kindness and generosity of local individuals, churches, grants and corporations. “Our funding comes from those who believe in our mission and recognize that no one should be hungry,” Servos says. “We measure our success by full bellies and big smiles,” she goes on. “We strive to fill the plates and the pantries of Baldwin County families who are food insecure with healthy food and fill their hearts with hope! And we have, for two decades. Over these past 20 years, we have navigated through numerous disasters, including Hurricanes Ivan, Sally and Zeta; the recession; Deepwater Horizon and the COVID-19 pandemic. But our biggest accomplishment is that, through all these huge disasters when we were counted on most, we rose to serve. Many nonprofits struggle to fill volunteer opportunities or keep funds available to operate, but I truly believe that God nudges those who have a heart to come volunteer at Prodisee Pantry and that He whispers to those with the means to donate. He answered our prayers.”

And in answering the prayers of those at Prodisee Pantry, God had also answered the need in the Baldwin County community it serves. This outreach ministry has grown because of our faithfulness. God blesses those who are good stewards with a little with a whole lot more. Twenty years ago, we would never have dreamed that God had plans for this small food pantry nestled in the small town of Spanish Fort in Baldwin County to grow into the largest emergency food pantry in the 24-county coastal areas of Mississippi, Alabama and Northwest Florida…It has not been easy, but God has always provided. And we know He will... that’s where the faith comes in... And that is where seeing the love of Christ comes in.

Exchanging Cookies & Making Memories My favorite time of the year is Christmas, and I love to entertain! Before moving to Alabama from Colorado 17 years ago, I would attend my very dear friend’s cookie exchange party every December. A group of girlfriends would get together for appetizers and exchange cookies. It was always a highlight of my Decembers. I decided December 2020 was the perfect time to plan my own Girls’ Holiday Cookie Exchange Brunch. Everyone in our area had been dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sally and impacts of a pandemic. We needed Christmas cheer more than ever. It’s been a lovely event that grows each year. Everyone brings 2 dozen cookies and leaves with an assortment of 2 dozen cookies to share with their family and friends over the course of the holiday season. We play a few fun games to get to know one another and enjoy a wonderful brunch including champagne and Bloody Mary bars. I just love how we all come together and create meaningful friendships while enjoying the spirit of Christmas. I am obsessed with blue, white, silver and gold Christmas decor. All areas of my home reflect this - the main tree in the living room, the mantle with stockings hung, the staircase banister, the dining room, and the front door. What I love most about Christmas is sharing my time with family and friends. All of the gratefulness, love, and laughter we carry throughout the year just exudes at this time of year! -Elizabeth Jones

What makes Fairhope Chocolate special? I am proud we have been able to offer Fairhope something unique. We blend the European influence of our Belgian chocolates with traditional southern confections such as pralines and caramels. Treats made in house are created with the highest quality couverture chocolate. What do you love most about what you do? How it connects us with the community. The shop allows us to be engaged in the joy of celebrating holidays and present in regard to community events. Personally, I enjoy how creative I can be. For instance, our King Cakes are made using a hybrid of real brioche and our own distinctive recipes. Cooking/baking is an artistic medium, and the kitchen is my happy place. Are there any changes for Fairhope Chocolate about which you are excited? This year, we became a full service bakery by offering breakfast and lunch. We have also expanded the flavors available from our espresso bar. We have in house seating, special events and so much more.

What do you love most about what you do? I love the people I work with. The ladies who help me run Rae’s make my life and my job easier. Everyone treats the business like their own, and I absolutely love it! What is one ingredient you can't live without and why? CHEESE!!! And maybe Bacon….but definitely cheese. My husband always says you always choose cheese over me. But bacon is legit the hardest thing to stay away from. We have it on too many of our menu items, so we cook it every day, and better believe, I grab a fresh slice off the pan every morning. What do you love most about the Eastern Shore? I’ve lived here for 10 years, and my favorite thing about the area is that even with all the growth, it always feels small town. You’re always going to run into a friend or neighbor out and about. It’s definitely an area that makes you feel special and welcomed. It has a big fish in a little pond vibe even when the pond is growing! What is one thing you hope people say about Rae's Kitchen? I just hope people like us and love the food. It is important that people enjoy the experience when they eat with us, and just feel like it’s worth it!! Eating out is expensive. Food is expensive. When people take home food from our coolers or come in and get lunch, I hope they just say this was definitely worth it.

TRADITIONS

A Collection of Nutcrackers & A Gathering For Everyone One of the longest-lasting Christmas traditions in our family revolves around nutcrackers. When my daughter was younger, I attended her performance of The Nutcracker and bought a nutcracker of my own to commemorate it. It soon became common to find unique nutcrackers and decorate with them throughout the house, resulting in over 1,600 nutcrackers that my daughter and her children help me decorate with every year. All of the nutcrackers are enjoyed every year by the guests who come to my Christmas party, and we continue to add to my collection every year. Decorating for Christmas is always a family event - almost a tradition in itself. Starting in late November, I begin to prepare my house. I take down all of my nutcrackers and tree decorations and begin to prepare my flower beds for poinsettias. My grandchildren help me take down the nutcrackers, and after thanksgiving lunch we will decorate the tree together. The tree is very traditionally decorated, with porcelain dolls, baby’s breath, and other unique ornaments. We listen to Christmas music, decorate the tree, and make sure the house is covered in nutcrackers. I start planning for my Christmas party months in advance. There are so many regular attendees from all over the county, I have to start getting the word out early to make sure people can plan to attend. Coordinating food (everything is homemade), decorations, and Dirty Santa presents takes about two months. I am blessed to have a large community to share my Christmas with, and I love bringing the holidays to that community. My family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, acquaintances - anyone and everyone is welcome. For me, every day is about spending time with family, finding joy in your life, and bringing joy to others. Christmas is the perfect holiday to bring all of those values together, and I always feel immensely grateful and joyful at having everyone under my roof and laughing together. love bringing the holidays to that community. My family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, acquaintances - anyone and everyone is welcome.

J

eremy Ellis walked into Char 32 two days before opening night hoping to secure a position as a server. After being told the positions were filled, he was asked if he had any kitchen experience. His answer? “Somewhat.” He reluctantly accepted a position in the back of the house, and that “somewhat” was later revealed to be 31 years of carefully cultivated talent and experience as an executive chef in some of Alabama’s finest establishments. Six years later, he is still creating amazingly innovative daily features at Char 32. What makes Char 32 special? The kitchen is small. I mean REALLY small. Yet, we manage to make it work by keeping the menu small as well. We don't need a four page menu to please people. Our guests love that we keep it simple.

Fresh Gulf Seafood would have to be my "one ingredient" I can't live without. Growing up fishing all the time in Louisiana gave me an even greater appreciation for gulf seafood once I got into the kitchen. What do you love most about the Eastern Shore? The growing food scene. If you take a step back and look at this area as a whole, there is a need and want for different food options in the area. It's an exciting time for individuals in the food industry, especially restauranteurs and chefs in this area. What is one thing you hope people say about Press & Co? That they feel welcome when they walk in. Kimberly and Alex did an amazing job creating an inviting space for people to enjoy some delicious one-ofa-kind food. "Press & Co. is a first for this area, and it's a great thing to be a part of."

TRADITIONS Love, Joy & The Spirit of Giving Christmas has always held a special place in my heart, and even after 29 years without her, it’s a season where I feel my mother’s presence all around. One cherished tradition that keeps her spirit alive is baking with my family. This cherished tradition, weaving together the legacies of my mother and Mrs. Haber, my mother-in-law, is a joy I now experience alongside my sister-in-law, Cindy Haber, and our families. From my daughters to my in-laws, from nieces, nephews, grandkids, to even grand nieces and nephews, everyone participates in this treasured family custom. Using time-honored family recipes, many of which were mom’s or Mrs. Haber’s, we lovingly bake yummy homemade treats for our loved ones. Every year, as we decorate and begin our Christmas baking, I am reminded of my mother’s love and her passion for this season. I am also reminded of Mrs. Haber’s love for baking and how it brought joy to her and our family. These traditions are not just a part of our Christmas celebration, they are a part of who we are as a family, and I am so grateful to be able to share them with our friends, family, and community. I absolutely love to have both of our restaurants (Wolf Bay) and my home decorated big time! My friend and interior designer, Brandice Griffin (Interiors by Brandice), helps make them absolutely perfect. Every room gets a splash of Christmas spirit, turning them into warm, cozy, and inviting spaces. I want every person who walks through our doors to feel loved and to catch the festive spirit. And you wouldn’t believe how the decor seems to grow and grow…..this year I believe Brandice decorated more than 20 Christmas trees between both places!

For me, Christmas is about celebrating the gift of love we’ve received and paying it forward. It’s about finding joy in the simplest things and spreading that joy to others. So, let’s embrace the beauty of Christmas, keep the spirit of our loved ones in our hearts, and continue to create beautiful memories and traditions that will be passed down through generations. Christmas is a beautiful reminder to keep the spirit of our loved ones alive in our hearts, even if they’re not physically present with us. It’s in the traditions we honor, the stories we share, and the memories we create, year after year, that keep their spirit alive. From baking mom’s famous cookies to watching dad’s favorite Christmas movie or reminiscing about special times, each tradition carries a piece of them, making them a part of our celebration. So, as we welcome this holiday season, let’s remember to spread love, joy, and the spirit of giving. Let’s make every room in our hearts and homes warm and welcoming. Let’s make everyone feel loved. Let’s bake together, using the recipes handed down from generations, celebrate together, and create memories that will last a lifetime. After all, isn’t that what Christmas is all about? - Charlene Haber Photo Credit: C indy McCrory, Blue Room Photography

Restaurateur,

Master Joe Since opening in March of 2009, Master Joe's has been the go-to for sushi lovers from all over South Alabama. With the addition of two additional concepts, Shanghai Cottage and Wok by d'Bay, Master Joe's Restaurant Group has options to please any palate. What makes your restaurants special? The sushi rolls are like a work of art, not only for the eyes but also the taste buds. I change sushi to make it like the culture by mixing American ingredients with the skills I learned while training to be a sushi master. Can you describe the options your restaurants have to offer? In addition to traditional and Americanized sushi, we also offer hibachi, traditional Chinese cuisine, poke bowls for those seeking lighter options, and more. Each restaurant has a full bar offering hand-crafted cocktails, beer, wine, and hot and cold sake.

What do you love most about the Eastern Shore? From our first visit, my wife, Karen, and I fell in love with the charm of Fairhope. I am thankful for this community that has supported us from the beginning. What is one thing you hope people say about your restaurants? We enjoy helping our guests navigate the many options they have to choose from to make the perfect selection, and we want them to leave feeling that we gave them a great experience, a great meal and they look forward to coming back to see us.

What makes Chicken Salad Chick special? Chicken Salad Chick is truly a family atmosphere that started with the vision of our founder, Stacy Brown. She wanted everyone who walks through our doors for homemade chicken salad and sides to feel at home and as if they received a giant hug when they visit our restaurants. This concept still exists almost 16 years later. Every member of our Chicken Salad Chick family takes pride in the food they provide you and your family. What do you love most about a career in the restaurant industry? We change peoples' lives with food. Customers seek out our restaurants, and it warms my heart. The people are no doubt what I love the most! This includes our customers and my entire staff. I can't begin to tell you how many relationships that we have made through the Chick. What is one thing you hope people say about Chicken Salad Chick? We enjoy hearing everyone's opinion about their favorite flavor, and we are humbled that our customers share how much they love our staff and our food. For us, giving back to our community is very important. The locals know it, and they thank us for it daily. SUPERMOM

SUPER MOM

M

aritza “Sage” El Salibi has had an interesting history: The mother of three has raised her children while following her bliss on two continents, moving with her husband and their kids to Ecuador in 2007 as she worked at her parents' fabric import company before becoming a Make Up Artist in Guayaquil, then shifting gears to enroll in Escuela de los Chefs Ecuador and then launching her own catering company. Seven years later, in 2014, El Salibi and her husband decided that it was time for a change.

“I took a plane with the kids and a suitcase with some clothes to join my husband, who had already come to Fairhope to get our lives set up here,” says El Salibi. “We had to start from zero, leaving behind a house, friends and a life that we had established to move to a place we knew nothing about, where we knew no one. But I knew that we could do it. Granted, it was hard, but we never quit.” DECEMBER / JANUARY 2024

53

SUPERMOM

El Salibi and her husband invested themselves into starting a restaurant eventually opened the first of their two restaurants. “It wasn't easy running a restaurant, picking the kids at school, bringing them to the back of our place to do homework while their mom was working, but we did it,” she says. “My son was a teenager at that time, so he learned the kitchen and helped his dad.” Naturally, having parents who owned their own restaurant wasn’t always easy for El Salibi’s kids. “The kids loved it, but at the same time, they always asked what time we would finish or how long they would have to be there and why Mommy didn’t go home with them or take them to extra activities like dance or sports,” admits the 41-year-old. “We had to explain that nothing in life is easy and that everything comes with sacrifice. It was good for them to see that. It was also great to expose them to the things that came from helping us at the restaurants, taking care of people, which reenforced what we taught them about treating people the way they wanted to be treated. “What made it hardest for me, as a mom, was knowing that my attention was so divided,” she goes on. “One day, my youngest daughter, who was nine years old at the time, came to me and told me that all she and her brother and sister wanted was our time. That broke my heart. But I knew she was right. I stopped spending so much time wrapped up in work and started focusing more on my kids. I said to my husband, “Let's build this now that we still have our kids together, because all that's left is the memories you make with your loved ones.”

54

SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

Together, the family has a few special traditions: El Sabili cooks every day, and everyone eats together. In the mornings, she gives her kids a blessing before they go to school; and Sundays are spent in pajamas, watching movies. Once a year, they join in a family reunion to reconnect with their roots. As much as mothers often wish for the ability to stop time, El Sabili’s children have grown older and are beginning to leave the nest to start families of their own. Her son, at 22, is now a husband and father himself, raising a nine-month-old baby boy with his 21-year-old wife, while her daughters, aged 16 and 12, still rely on her in their daily lives. For each of her children, however, she wants them to always feel her presence—and remember her as someone who “has no filters, is funny, crazy, loves everybody, and tries to do everything I can to make everyone happy. I want them to never forget that, even though I am always on the go, I am always there. I want them to remember that all the sacrifices we made were for them in the end and remember the depth of the love we have for them.”

BRIDE

Even

with so many dating apps out there, sometimes it takes a good, oldfashioned set up to get a love story going—and so it was for Cooper Sharp and Caroline Graham. “We were both in our second semester of our freshman year of college at the University of Alabama, and his pledge brother, who I graduated high school with, introduced us to each other,” says Caroline. “He convinced Cooper to invite me as his date to a date party.” It may have initially taken some “convincing” to get to that first date, but it was the chemistry and mutual attraction to one another that led to subsequent dates, and soon the two became a couple. Four years later, they became even more. “We were on vacation at Cooper’s family vacation home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and I had a feeling he was going to propose,” says Caroline of the July day in 2022 that changed her life—and her future— forever. “Still, as much as I thought it might be a possibility, I wasn’t sure because my parents weren’t on vacation with us, and I knew he would want them to be there. Oddly enough, his mom had planned ‘family pictures,’ which we had never done in the years I had been going there with them. While we were on the beach, dressed up for the pictures, he proposed! After I turned around to look back at the rest of his family on the beach, I saw my parents running towards me! He surprised me by inviting them to come up Hilton Head to be a part of such a memorable day for both of us!” 66

SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

Just over a year later, on September 16, 2023, their families were once again part of a memorable day to watch as Caroline walked down the aisle at Fairhope United Methodist Church, wearing an A-line silhouette gown with a square neckline and a bow and buttons down the back to the train, to meet Cooper at the altar. Surrounded by 200 of their closest friends and family with their combined 18 attendants standing with them, the couple spoke their vows and were pronounced married. First marred kiss exchanged, the couple walked back down the aisle as Mr. and Mrs., later joining their guests for a reception at The Venue in downtown Fairhope. Dinner included a grits station with shrimp and Conecuh and various toppings as well as a carving station with a steamship round and a mashed potato bar—giving everyone plenty of fuel to dance and celebrate the newlyweds. Later in the evening, the couple cut into their cake, a four-tiered masterpiece with layers of confetti, strawberry with cream cheese filling, traditional white wedding cake filled with traditional white icing and chocolate with chocolate ganache filling, covered in buttercream frosting and featuring a small figurine of the couple’s golden retriever, Dolly, on the side of the cake. “Both the cake table tablecloth and the ring bearer pillow were made out of the train from my mother’s wedding dress, and all of my siblings have used them at their weddings,” Caroline notes. After being waved off to celebrate their honeymoon with best wishes for their future, the newly married Sharps spent a week in St. John’s USVI. Now back home in Montgomery, Alabama, the couple have the rest of their lives to spend together, happy for that first date and the little bit of convincing that got them there.

MICHELLE GOURGUES "I have lived in Alabama all of my life and became a resident of Mobile in 2008. I have been blessed with a wonderful boyfriend, three beautiful daughters, and the most amazing grandson! My main artistic focus is creating one of a kind pieces with a coastal aesthetic that incorporate my love for the beach while maintaining my unique artistic identity. I have always enjoyed painting, but I made a shift to mixed media art in 2012. I guess you could call me a glass hoarder because I am always looking for various types of glass to work with. If it is glass, I am going to find a way to turn it into a gorgeous creation. Over the last five years, I have hosted in person and online workshops to teach others how to create their own mixed media art using glass. It is an honor to be able to help others tap into their creative side by teaching them step by step about the artform that has become my passion. I have been a vendor at several area arts and crafts festivals over the years and you can find out where I will be set up next on my Facebook page or on my website. The Fairhope Inn was the setting for the exciting surprise reveal for a local 17 year old who will receive a magic moment, a trip to New Orleans to go see the Saints play. The reveal was followed by an incredible menu which included a three course meal paired with selected wines. Magic Moments is the only wish granting organization dedicated to children exclusively in the state of Alabama with chronic, life threatening illnesses.
