DIVING IN: JOSHUA GIBB’S CAREER WITH DSAR AND MPD

BY LIESEL SCHMIDT Joshua Gibbs was just a kid when his father let him borrow a diving mask. “I spent countless hours in the water, and I still remember the first mask he bought me for my very own,” says Gibbs. Little did he know that would be the beginning of something that would take him to a decorated career in law enforcement. Even at that young age, Gibbs’s love for the water, coupled with the skill he gained at shooting and his love for the outdoors, left him always wanting to explore, see more and learn more about what was underwater and in the outdoors. He became a lifeguard at fourteen, learned to dive at 15 and a few years later became a water rescue instructor. One summer break during college, he helped locate a man missing in a local lake in Mobile County. “I decided after that recovery mission that I wanted to learn everything I could about search and recovery diving,” Gibbs explains. To that end, he became a dive rescue specialist and joined Daphne Search and Rescue (DSAR) after earning a degree in criminal justice and forensic investigations from Jacksonville State and returning to South Alabama. 14

SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

“I had a desire for a career that would allow me to use the skills I learned and incorporate the things I was passionate about,” Gibbs notes. “Law Enforcement and Search and Rescue seemed to be a great fit and turned into a career that I love and enjoy sharing with others through education and volunteerism. “DSAR has always been on the leading edge of training and technology for both land and water search,” says Gibbs, who has been with DSAR for 17 years and was elected captain in the fall of 2021. “While prolonged land searches are fewer and fewer, the number of persons missing in the water has increased exponentially over the years. I’ve worked hard to help secure grants and funding and provide the best training possible for unit members. The greatest challenge in the work we do is finding a way to acquire all the resources needed to ensure we are successful in bringing home the lost. We are an all-volunteer agency with a minimal budget, so working closely with community partners like Impact 100 Baldwin County who funded nearly $200,000 dollars of our Advanced Sonar Program to purchase a custom vessel and the latest in underwater search technology has been crucial to our abilities to serve the public. Even with this amazing support, however, we still are working towards securing funding for the purchase of more equipment as well as land for a new station.” In his years with DSAR, challenge and success have been two sides of the same coin. “My greatest pride comes at the completion of a difficult search or an operation when the team has met with success. It’s that realization that all the hard work and sacrifice of everyone involved has paid off and that our motto of ‘Bringing Home the Lost’ stands strong. The words thank you carry great weight when given by the family member of a missing person located through our efforts.” In addition to his work with DSAR, Gibbs has worked with the Mobile Police Department for 12 years and is currently a patrol Sergeant assigned to the 5th Precinct in downtown Mobile. He is also a member of the MPD Underwater Search & Recovery Unit as a police diver and police diver instructor and also assists the Firearms Training Unit as a certified FBI firearms instructor. “I have always enjoyed the work I do, both in law enforcement as well as search and rescue,” Gibbs says. “I often meet people at the worst times in their lives, when something terrible has happened or their loved one is missing. Knowing you are the one that others look to and call on to assist them in their time of need or bring home their lost loved one is a reward few other careers provide.” Gibbs is a native of Mobile County and now lives in Daphne. In his down time, he enjoys anything else that he can do outdoors. He also enjoys training divers and teaching search and recovery to teams across the country and has presented at conferences across the Southeast.

SHOWCASE

Home STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT HOUSE PHOTOGRAPHY BY BAILEY CHASTANG

A

s Don and Sylvia Rayfield began planning their home in 2021, they enlisted the talents of Delia Pierce, owner of Lemongrass Custom Home & Design, to work with them and bring their vision to life. Having built the reputation of her firm over the past two decades as one with the highest professional standards, Pierce has a unique approach to home building, and her in-depth design process sets her apart in the custom home building industry. Collaborating with Sarah Bass Interior Design, Pierce and her team at Lemongrass have created homes that pair cutting edge design with functionality that enhances daily life for the homeowners—and the Rayfields felt the strength of that collaboration through every step of their design and build. The result was a work of art that earned the team at Lemongrass Custom Home & Design the privilege of being chosen as the 2023 BCHBA Showcase Home Builder. NOVEMBER 2023

Upon approach, the home’s stunning architecture is complimented by gas lanterns that provide function as well as beauty and warmth. Entering the open-plan living space, an amazing asymmetrical floor to ceiling wall with a fireplace and floating metal staircase create immediate visual interest in the space. Plentiful windows allow generous natural light into the two-story living room. The adjoining dining room, with its one-of-a-kind dining table and light fixtures, affords beautiful views of the water and picturesque sunsets. In the kitchen, Wolf-Sub Zero appliances, custom contemporary cabinetry, and gorgeous countertops with a natural stone backsplash create a space that is sleekly modern and inviting.

Offering the perfect retreat after a long day, the primary suite features custom wall panels and striking light fixtures. The ensuite bathroom features plum brown cabinetry and a wet room made with large format porcelain slabs to create a space that is breathtaking and impressive in its design. In the powder room, the expertly chosen combination of wallpaper, black and white marble flooring, and magnificent cabinetry and fixtures create an unforgettable space that speaks to the Rayfield’s love of bold design. The home is equipped with a fully functional elevator, which offers easy access to the incredible view from the upstairs “viewing room.” This upper level living space overlooks Mobile Bay and provides unobstructed views from every window, with a full kitchen area complete with wet bar and beverage station and custom live-edged dining table to take full advantage of the space. The upstairs also includes a unique guest room with a custom painted ceiling and contemporary light fixture, offering visiting guests a whimsical space in which to retreat. Designed with the same attention to detail, the guest bath features a custom tub/shower and a cabinet to ceiling tile backsplash that makes a beautiful design accent. An additional large suite on the second floor features a walk-in closet and desk area for supplementary storage and functional space. The adjoining bathroom features porcelain slabs in the shower and accent wall to provide a luxurious atmosphere. Both inside and out, the Rayfield home is set in a location that, when combined with the architectural design features and functionality of the spaces, create a beautiful home to be enjoyed for the rest of their days. Mike Adams and his wife, Alison, are Louisiana natives who moved to the area 13 years ago. Mike shares, "This area is an amazing place. We love it here. In fact, we've never been happier any other place we've been." Mike has 35-plus years' experience in the industry which he put to use to create E3 Termite & Pest Control which celebrated its 4-year anniversary this past summer. Alison is by his side serving as the company's office manager. Why E3? The "E" is in recognition that the company provides its services in an environmentally friendly manner. The "3" represents the fact that at least 3 treatments are done on each home to ensure it is truly protected against termite infestation. Family and community are important to Mike and Alison. They enjoy spending time with their four children and dogs, taking their camper on trips and being involved with their church in Mobile. You are also likely to see Mike serving as an umpire at baseball games, something he has enjoyed for over 20 years. E3 Termite & Pest Control is also a proud member of the Baldwin County and Mobile County Home Builders Associations. Mike recognizes that a business is built by working with partners and clients to find solutions. "Every day, we have REALTOR® partners and clients call us with issues. s Vice President and residential construction lender for BankPlus, a full-service regional bank along the Gulf Coast, Nancy Grace has a busy work schedule—and that business doesn’t take a break when she closes the door to her office for the day. The mother of two juggles her work with her family responsibilities, making sure that none of the balls drop between her son’s sports events or her daughter’s gymnastics and that they never doubt her devotion to their needs.

“We are a busy, busy family,” Grace notes, “so we are always on the go. But we do it together as much as possible. I do my best to enjoy every day with them and not take anything for granted. Everything I do is for Landon and Natalee, and I enjoy working hard to give them the very best life I can.” NOVEMBER 2023

51

SUPERMOM

Granted, Grace’s hard work gives her children the best opportunities, but it also provides them an invaluable example of dedication and work ethic. “All of the work that I do and the hours I put in shows them what a good work ethic looks like and how to work for what you want. I want them to grow up knowing that they should never be afraid to set goals for want they want and to work to achieve them—whatever they may be.” Naturally, being a working mom with two active kids—one a teenager and the other on the cusp of becoming one—time management is always a challenge. “I’m still working on this one,” Grace admits. “Juggling all our schedules can be interesting.” As interesting, challenging, and hectic as life can sometimes be for the Grace trio, they are happily in the process of building a brand-new home. “This is an accomplishment personally because, a few short years ago, this was not financially possible for us,” Grace says. “My kids have seen firsthand that, by setting goals and working hard, it is possible to achieve those goals and see your dreams realized. Professionally, this is what I help people with every day, and it has given me the opportunity to see the whole building process and all that it entails from my customers’ points of view. I feel I can relate to them better and even help guide them through the process, having just gone through some of the same situations.” 52

SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

With each year that goes by as her kids inch closer to adulthood, Grace feels the importance of conveying to them in as many ways as possible that they are loved and supported. “I want them to take that knowledge and certainty with them when they leave me and go out into the world to start their own lives and their own journeys,” she says. For these years that she has them, Grace has created some special traditions with her children. “We enjoy cutting down our Christmas tree the weekend after Thanksgiving at Fish River Trees every year,” she says. “The kids also love any excuse to go to Starbucks, so we usually celebrate the little things there; and we love going to the beach when we have a free day and also winding down with a good movie in the evenings when we get the chance. It’s really mostly about being together.” The 48-year-old may have a few years on her kids, but she admittedly learns something new from them every day. “My daughter loves bringing new recipes for us to try from YouTube, so that definitely stretches some muscles in the kitchen,” she says. “Landon loves teaching me the defensive positions in football. Watching them grow up, develop their own friendships and see their constant desire to know things and learn helps me become a better person.”

Treatment As Unique As You Are Each patient is different. We’ll work to find the specific course of treatment that’s best for you. We want our patients to feel confident treating their varicose veins. Our process is simple — it starts with an online screening or you can give us a call.

Getting Schooled: SFEEF’s Mission to Build Spanish Fort’s Schools STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

A

s a community grows, it naturally experiences growing pains that must find relief: infrastructure, traffic, housing… and schools. Back in the early 2000’s when Spanish Fort, Alabama, was but a fledgling on its way to spreading its wings, a group of individuals reached out to the Baldwin County School System for the creation of a high school. Hearing the announcement that Spanish Fort was going to get its own high school, Ed Dismukes, John Wilson, and Mike Robson realized that the start of a brand-new high school would not include band uniforms, library books, sports equipment, and innumerable other things that the students would need. The three men wanted to provide students at Spanish Fort High School with the best experience they could, and so they created the Spanish Fort Education Enrichment Foundation to raise money for things not provided by the county school board.

“With the addition of schools and programs, our original mission evolved into promoting more advocacy and specific teacher requests.”

NOVEMBER 2023

59

IMPACT & GIVEBACK

SFEEF became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and soon grew to include a board of directors, garnering broad-based community support. Shortly on the heels of the high school were plans for a middle school—calling, once again, for the community’s support. Originally formed with the sole intent of forming the high school, SFEEF reorganized to help support all Spanish Fort schools— which later came to include Stonebridge Elementary School. “With the addition of schools and programs, our original mission evolved into promoting more advocacy and specific teacher requests,” says Melissa Sprinkle, executive director of SFEEF. “But even as we have adapted and changed to meet the challenges of growth, we still do our best to help our schools with what they need to be the very best they can be and still celebrate our teachers. That is something that will never change. “Overall, our mission is to inspire the power of community to enrich and support education for all Spanish Fort public school children,” Sprinkle continues. “The SFEEF board works diligently with all five Spanish Fort school principals to provide each of the Spanish Fort schools with educational needs, assist with obtaining funding for projects and general assistance needed for our schools and students pertaining to education. SFEEF 60

SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

joins the other six educational foundations as a coalition to work together to make education the focus for all of Baldwin County’s seven feeder school areas.” As it looks to the future, SFEEF’s goals include increasing and promoting awareness for a high-quality education so that area students may compete in an international job market; involving community, parents, and business members to commit and participate in the educational enrichment of all Spanish Fort school children and securing funding for educational enrichment experiences in all disciplines for Spanish Fort students. They also hope to manage and allocate resources in partnership with donors, the school district, and the local community; sponsor teacher/student “mini grants” to encourage creativity and excellence in the classroom and promote and expand technology in area schools to provide Spanish Fort children with a world class education.

“To accomplish these goals, we host events, raise awareness through community meetings, and participate in social media; secure sponsorships for fundraising events, offer organizational membership opportunities, and solicit grants and create a strong board governance and a strict allocation process,” explains Sprinkle. “We also offer annual teacher/student grants that provide technical equipment, educational opportunities, and educational programs. Our funding comes primarily through community fundraising efforts, grants, and contracts for services with the Spanish Fort Public School Commission. We need to provide our students with reading materials and programs that not only help them with learning needs but also help advanced readers attain a higher level of reading; math programs of all levels to help promote and advance students in their math skills; science and language programs to provide teachers with a higher level of teaching materials, and assist students to attain a higher degree of accomplishment in these areas of study.”

For more information, visit SFEEF.com

Upcoming fundraising events to help SFEEF achieve its goals include Toros Boots and Brews on November 16, 2023, at Venue 31 in Spanish Fort from 6-10 pm and the Gator Chase 5k, 10K and fun run on February 24, 2024. SFEEF also hosts RISE, an annual evening each April recognizing inspirational academic achievements by area teachers, students, and school administrators.

MARY BETH GREENE BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

T

he very best entrepreneurs are able to identify a need in the market and fill it in a way that no one else has—and for Alabama native Mary Beth Greene, that meant creating simple, functional travel wares that were colorful, stylish, and unique.

Greene graduated from Auburn with a degree in Secondary Education and spent the first three years of her career as a high school teacher, followed by several years as a stay-at-home mom to her two boys before re-entering the workforce as a sales rep in Alabama and Mississippi, selling boutique products made by specialty vendors who offered everything from jewelry to candles. “Little did I know, this would be the springboard for my design business,” Greene observes. Her background in the wholesale industry meant Greene knew well what it took to get noticed, and so she spent two years designing and networking before she officially launched her line, . It all started at her kitchen table, where she spent many late nights with paper, tape, and scissors making what she calls “paper bags”—prototypes and patterns for what would eventually become the foundational pieces for her brand.

“The concept for the business was to offer a well-designed product that would be considered a ‘classic with a twist,’” Greene explains. “I designed each piece with great attention to detail and quality, with the intent that mb greene bags are meant to be mixed, matched, and enjoyed by those who use them.” NOVEMBER 2023

71

PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW

The Turquoise Collection—so named for the fact that all styles have a turquoise zipper—was the first, paying homage to the waters along the Gulf Coast, where Greene and her family reside. Nine years later, she has created a range of collections and products under the brand—all of which are inspired by the needs of her clientele. “It’s so fun when we receive the first sewn samples from the factory and see our designs come to fruition,” she says. “We design lifestyle products that are ideal for travel, gifting, and corporate branding. The new custom option can mean simply adding a logo to a product in our warehouse or allowing us to design the piece from scratch to create something special using a budget or specific need. Our focus was, and still is, creating top-notch, curated products. I love color, being organized, and creating with my hands, and my work satisfies each of those passions.” But what sets mb greene apart from competitor brands? According to Greene, the answer is simple: “We strive for quality, style, and function in every design. Often times, our designs begin with a simple need during a weekend adventure, a family trip, or dinner with friends. We take great pride in our attention to detail with each product and the customer experience. One of my favorite custom projects was creating a ‘Pie Purse’ for Southern Baked Pie Company, which operates four locations in Georgia. There aren’t a lot of brands that will custom tailor their products the way we can.” Clearly, Greene has created a brand dedicated to excellence—but she, as a business owner, is also dedicated to making a difference and “doing good.” To that end, mb greene proudly supports the M. Bagwell Foundation, which was created in loving memory of her sister and accomplished artist, Mandy Bagwell. A portion of all mb greene sales is donated to simply “do more good,” and to date, the brand has sponsored seven college scholarships, helped fund tornado aid in Greene’s hometown of Selma, Alabama, and supported relief efforts for Gulf Coast hurricane victims over the years. 72

SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

Away from her work, Greene enjoys spending time in Orange Beach with her husband, Brett, and their family. “As a mother of two boys, I learned to love fishing, boating, and sports when they were young,” Greene says. “With my own dream for my company, Brett, the boys and my parents have been my biggest fans since day one, and I could not have done it without their love, support, and pickup trucks!” Greene is active in the Eastern Shore and Mobile Chamber of Commerce and has served as a business mentor with RAMP through the Mobile Chamber in addition to volunteering her time and talent with numerous organizations in the community, including community schools to support students and teachers. BRIDE

A s complicated as life became during COVID,

there were some silver linings to be found among the black clouds; and, for Amber Crigler and Hunter Harris, that meant finding one another.

“During Covid, Hunter was working as a chef at a New Orleans restaurant,” Amber begins the tale. “Because the city stayed closed longer than we were on the Eastern Shore, he moved here for an opportunity to get back to work. He joined PP hospitality and eventually came to work at Sunset Pointe, where I was a front-of-the-house manager. He loved calling out ‘Amber's Pasta,’ a special that I had made when I’d worked in the kitchen. We went on one date and knew that we were going to have to decide if what we felt was real because of company policy, which said that, due to management positions, we would have to move to different restaurants if we wanted to continue seeing each other.” And so they went to different restaurants, having decided to pursue their feelings for one another. Over the next year, they became a couple that helped each other grow and leaned on one another through some major challenges. “We knew that we wanted all of that for life.” 86

“For life” became official when Hunter asked Amber to marry him. “He told me we were invited to his younger brother’s golf ceremony at Steelwood,” Amber recalls. “I insisted that we stop at Dick’s Sporting Goods so that we could bring him a gift and bought some golf balls. When we got there, Hunter asked me to walk outside before the ceremony started. As we looked out at the lake, he dropped down on a knee and asked the best question ever: ‘Will you marry me!’ I almost cried, but I was too happy to!” On March 5, 2022, that too-happy-for-tears feeling washed over her again as Amber walked down the aisle outside at her parents’ home on Mobile Bay wearing her mother’s circa-1993 wedding gown, repurposed and updated into a beautiful new dress. “We cut out the puffy sleeves and collar and used them to make a tablecloth for the cake table,” Amber notes.

The dress was just one of a list of very special details unique to Amber and Hunter’s special day. “I did my bouquet toss from the top of the Ferris wheel used in Stranger Things, which we rented and set up in the backyard,” says Amber. “The Bishop State culinary class—headed by chef Henry Douglas—donated an ice sculpture, and we had chargrilled oysters at the end of the pier. My dad built my flower wall and a mirrored bridge to cross the pool to the altar. Also, our neighbor supplied the greenery from her greenhouse; a family friend was the DJ, I graduated from the same culinary school (CIA) as our caterer, Sarah from Bay Gourmet and our cake was made by the same lady who made one for my sweet 16. All the details were so personalized to us, because I planned our wedding—which is my dream job! Everything was perfect!” Dinner served, dances danced, six-tiered buttercream and raspberry cake cut, bouquet tossed and send-off completed, the happy couple spent their first days of married bliss in an over-water hut at Le Moana in Bora Bora. “It was an absolute dream!” Amber says. Now back home in Daphne, Alabama, the Harrises are looking forward to doing life together, leaning on one another in the hard times and overcoming challenges, celebrating the wins and cherishing the little joys. LINDA SCOTT I began painting in my early 30’s in Tennessee. It was a wonderful outlet for me as I raised my 3 children before I went back to work again. Even among the mountains, my heart was at the beach. Many of my paintings in the early years depicted palm trees and sea birds. We moved to the Eastern Shore, making a home in Daphne, 20 years ago, and I now get to live the life that I love to paint. I call my style “Southern Coastal." Along with crabs, oysters, shrimp and herons, I love our cotton fields, flowers and boats. I am now a fulltime artist, and I enjoy participating in the art festivals in this area. I was honored to be the poster artist for both the Jubilee Festival of Arts and Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival. You can also find me at the Peterson Anderson Festival, Annual National Shrimp Festival and Art in the Pass. Teaching “fun art, not fine art” classes at different venues along the Eastern Shore allows me to share my love of painting and creating with new artists. As the saying goes, if you love what you do, it’s never work.
