ECUMENICAL MINISTRIES OF BALDWIN COUNTY

In 1969, a group of local churches in the community recognized the need for a unified approach to helping those in crisis. They envisioned a single place where individuals and families could receive the assistance they needed without having to navigate multiple organizations. This vision led to the creation of Ecumenical Ministries, Inc. (EMI), a nonprofit designed to meet the needs of the community efficiently and compassionately.

EMI’s mission is simple yet profound: to serve those in need. Over the years, EMI has become a vital resource, offering a variety of programs that provide food, shelter, and hope to thousands of individuals and families. Their Emergency Aid program, for instance, assisted over 4,300 people last fiscal year, offering critical help with food, utilities, rent, and medical care. The organization’s two food pantries alone provided more than 15,000 meals to families struggling to make ends meet.

One of the most impactful programs EMI operates is the Repair Baldwin initiative, which has repaired over 800 homes and invested over $1,000,000 into the community since the program's inception in 2012. This program focuses on saving the homes of low-income homeowners by addressing essential repairs like roof replacements and building handicap ramps. Each repaired home represents not just a safer living environment, but a renewed sense of

dignity and security for its residents. EMI also operates a Meals on Wheels program, delivering over 28,169 meals to elderly and disabled neighbors who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. Volunteers, who are the heart of this program, ensure that these individuals receive not only nutritious food but also a friendly visit that can brighten their day.

Another highlight of EMI’s work is the Christmas Sharing program, which last year provided toys for 750 children and gifts for 110 elderly clients. This annual effort brings the community together to ensure that no child goes without a gift and no senior feels forgotten during the holiday season.

EMI’s success is deeply rooted in the support it receives from the community. Whether it’s partnering with local churches, businesses like Baldwin EMC and Riviera, or being a proud United Way Partnering Agency, the strength of EMI lies in the generosity and dedication of its supporters. Volunteers, donors, and local partnerships enable EMI to continue its mission and meet the growing needs of the community.

Despite facing challenges such as rising costs and increasing demand for services, EMI remains committed to its long-term goals. They aim to expand their home repair efforts and continue meeting the needs of struggling families. Their recently remodeled and expanded thrift store, Emmy’s, plays a significant role in funding these initiatives, ensuring that every donation and purchase directly impacts the lives of those in need.

Through it all, EMI continues to be a beacon of hope, providing essential services with compassion and dignity, truly embodying the spirit of community.

A Grand Reopening for Emmy's Thrift Shop located at 564 Fairhope Avenue was held on Saturday, August 17th. EMI is very thankful to Fairhope Single Tax Corporation, Impact 100 Baldwin County and the generous private donors that made this possible.

The newly remodeled and expanded store is a place you can donate to and shop at knowing that your money is being used in the community in a very positive way.

HUNT April

OWNER // (318) 773-8606

WAHLERT

OWNER // (706) 575-8800

Is there a motto or bit of philosophy which drives you each day?

April: Proverb 10:9 says he who walks in integrity walks securely. I strive to create relationships with my clients while they are in the process of buying or selling that assures them that I am looking out for their best interest, and that they can trust me through the process because I live by these words. That assures them that I am looking out for their best interest, and that they can trust me through the process because I live by these words. Mine and Kendall’s faith drives our desire to create an unmatched culture here in the office and has created a strong company in a short amount of time.

Kendall: I believe the scripture that says whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord. I believe that hard work pays off when we work this way. I love cheering on the agents in our office as they grow their business, and I believe that the atmosphere that’s been created at Waters Edge will strengthen them in both business and on a personal level.

What do you enjoy most about a career in real estate?

April: Helping people accomplish their real estate goals, whether a first-time buyer, a step up or an investment property, is incredibly rewarding. I am doing more than getting a deal to the closing table; I am truly helping people accomplish the American Dream. This life the Lord has blessed me with is far greater than I deserve and creating Waters Edge with Kendall has been such awe-inspiring part of my story. I am so proud of what we have created.

Kendall: Everyday looks different, and usually, it’s very exciting. Unlike many career fields, the harder you work the more income you can make, and each agent's business can be uniquely theirs. I love seeing how a career in real estate with top level training can change our agent’s lives.

The Little Tree Project hosted its first Night for Freedom fundraising event in the Original Oyster House Banquet Room. Guests enjoyed great food, wine and beer, desserts and a silent auction. The Little Tree Project is a faith-based nonprofit organization committed to ending human trafficking through education, outreach, and support for survivors. I excel in understanding my clients’ motivations, or “their WHY,” and guide them with a personalized game plan. This holistic approach to real estate extends beyond transactions, helping clients navigate the home-buying process with clarity and confidence.

What do you most enjoy about working in the field?

The best part of being a realtor is the chance to connect with people and guide them through life-changing moments. It's incredibly fulfilling to see clients realize their dream of owning a home and to help them navigate the path to wealth through real estate investing.

Describe the type of client you serve most frequently. What is your niche in real estate?

While I have a passion for assisting first-time homeowners and novice investors, my unique niche in real estate lies in new construction development—a specialty that found me organically. CLARICE HALL BLACK

Shaping Fairhope’s Future, Honoring Its Past

larice Hall Black’s roots run deep in Fairhope, Alabama, where she has established herself as a dedicated community leader and advocate. As a 5th generation descendant of the Houston and Wilson families, Clarice’s connection to Fairhope is not just historical—it’s profoundly personal. Growing up surrounded by the grandpa oaks, creeks, and the iconic Fairhope pier, she developed a deep love for the area that has only grown stronger despite living and traveling all over the world. “Fairhope is my core,” she reflects, emphasizing her enduring love for her family, friends, and the unique charm of her hometown.

Clarice’s journey from Fairhope to the wider world began after she graduated from Daphne High School. She joined the United States Air Force, where she embraced the core values of Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence In All We Do. These principles guided her through a 20-year military career and continue to influence her work today. After retiring from the United States Air Force, Clarice returned to Fairhope with her husband who is also retired from USAF to raise their two boys.

COMMUNITY leader

As she serves in the roles of Executive Director of Twin Beech Community Cemetery and Director of Hope Community, Clarice has a hand in shaping Fairhope’s future while honoring its past. Her work with the Hope Community, where she has been a board member since 2017, involves working with the organization’s community development committee on community initiatives and events, coordinating with the USA Health’s Integrative Health and Wellness program to host monthly Food Rx healthy cooking dinners and nurturing the organization’s mission of unity through food, healing, and education. One of her current projects includes developing a teaching farm that will serve as a sustainable resource for future generations. To learn more about Hope Community please visit hopecommunityal.org/.

Clarice also serves on the City of Fairhope Planning Commission and the Baldwin County Board of Adjustments, where she brings her unique perspective and dedication to every decision. Inspired by her connection with former Mayor Karin Wilson, Clarice took on these roles to gain knowledge and help others in her community. She believes that passion drives her work, and when it comes from the heart, the challenges fade in comparison to the sense of accomplishment.

When Clarice isn’t busy with her many responsibilities, she enjoys traveling with her family and caring for her 28 free-range chickens on their property. Her life is a blend of service, family, and a deep-seated love for her hometown—a combination that makes her an invaluable part of Fairhope’s fabric. Through all her endeavors, Clarice remains focused on one goal: creating a stronger, more united community for generations to come.

ASSOCIATE BROKER

Aleen is firmly rooted in the Gulf Coast, growing up on Mobile Bay beneath the oaks in Montrose. She attended Fairhope Middle School, Bayside Academy, and Spring Hill College, and after college enjoyed 20 successful years in retail management and outside sales before pursuing her true passion of real estate.

A natural in the industry, her first year in the business Aleen was recognized as Rookie of the Year and has since secured a spot on Roberts Brother's prestigious "Top Ten" agents.

Aleen and her husband, Winston, are now empty nesters, enjoying life with their two Springer Spaniels, Cash and Eleven, and a large, lovable cat named Stella. Her daughter is studying landscape architecture at Auburn University, and her son serves as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. When Aleen isn’t closing deals, you can find her playing mahjong, bridge and pickleball or boating and traveling with her husband.

What makes you different from other realtors?

Professionally: My familiarity with so many different areas and neighborhoods in South Alabama along with my knowledge of waterfront property. Personally: My inability to control my facial expressions, and just keeping it super real. Like, “sure you love the yard, but are you going to want to carry your groceries up those stairs every day?” I want my clients to not only love the house but to love their future life there. Being genuine and transparent is part of who I am as a person.

Growing up in a military family, Joseph developed a deep passion for real estate at an early age, having experienced firsthand the opportunities and challenges that come with moving frequently. His upbringing instilled in him a unique perspective and a drive to help others find the perfect place to call home.

Before obtaining his real estate license, Joseph gained valuable experience working as an administrative assistant, transaction coordinator, and operations manager for several prominent real estate firms in the Mobile Bay area. These roles helped him build a strong foundation in the industry, giving him the organizational expertise and attention to detail needed to excel. His education at The University of Alabama, where he studied Advertising and Business Management, further sharpened his skills in creating tailored marketing strategies and delivering exceptional customer service.

What do you enjoy most about a career in real estate?

Every day is different. I cherish the relationships that I have made throughout my career that have turned into lifelong friends. I love helping people accomplish their real estate goals, whether a first-time home buyer, a step-up into a larger property, or a seasoned investor, it is incredibly rewarding to see the deal through.

How do you ensure you exceed your client's expectations?

At the Joseph Pollard Group, we truly believe in service over sales. A key part of our service is topnotch communication. Before, during, and after the transaction, there's no one thing that is more critical than communication. Our clients are making one of the most significant financial commitments of their lifetime. The key to a smooth transaction is to be proactive, reach out, and stay in constant communication with clients throughout the process.

My parents bought their first beach cottage when I was just 9 months old. My upbringing in a family immersed in real estate investing has endowed me with a distinct perspective on the industry. This background empowers me to guide clients in grasping the immediate and long-term benefits of real estate investments. By elucidating both the broader advantages and finer details of properties, I set myself apart, providing clients with comprehensive insights to make informed decisions in a competitive market.

How long have you been in real estate and what drove you to this career?

With a familial background deeply rooted in real estate, entering the industry felt like a natural progression for me. Having grown up surrounded by the nuances of the business, I realized I had a head start compared to others. Actively involved in real estate for two decades, beginning with the management of my family’s vacation rental portfolio, I possess invaluable insights into buyer needs. As an avid real estate investor myself, I empathize with the anxieties of property ownership, constantly balancing mortgages with the anticipation of rental income.

What do you most enjoy about working in the field?

Receiving positive feedback from vacation guests, homeowners, team members, and vendors is immensely gratifying. When guests create unforgettable memories in a Harris Vacations property, we consider it a testament to our commitment to excellence. Hearing an owner express gratitude for early retirement due to property management is truly life-changing. Similarly, witnessing employees and agents’ enthusiasm for their roles is deeply rewarding as a business owner—it signifies that we're fostering a thriving and fulfilling work environment.

36TH ANNUAL JUBILEE FESTIVAL OF ARTS CO-CHAIRS

Danielle Pitt Gaston & T. Garrett Hughes

The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce hosts the Annual Jubilee Festival of Arts in conjunction with the City of Daphne each year. The festival which will return to Olde Towne Daphne October 19th and 20th features more than 150 local and regional artists, music, local cuisine, and more. This year’s co-chairs, Danielle Pitt-Gaston and T. Garrett Hughes are both deeply rooted in the Eastern Shore, and their love of our community shines through in their commitment to this beloved event.

For Danielle, serving as co-chair of the Jubilee Festival of Arts is more than just an opportunity to give back; it’s a chance to honor a tradition that has been a part of her life for years. “The Jubilee Festival has always been a special event for my family and me,” Danielle shares. “Growing up, I remember walking through the streets, marveling at the talent on display, and feeling a sense of pride in our community. Being asked to serve as co-chair this year felt like a natural progression of my love for this festival and everything it represents.”

Changing The Way Healthcare is Delivered

Garrett echoes Danielle’s sentiments, emphasizing the festival's role in showcasing the unique cultural fabric of the Eastern Shore. “This festival is more than just an art show,” Garrett explains. “It’s a celebration of who we are as a community. The Jubilee Festival brings together artists, musicians, and food vendors from all over, but what really makes it special is the way it highlights our local talent and traditions. I wanted to be a part of making this year’s festival the best it can be and serving as co-chair seemed like the perfect way to do that.”

Both Danielle and Garrett were drawn to the opportunity to serve as co-chairs because of their shared belief in the power of the arts to bring people together. “Art has this incredible ability to connect us,” Danielle says. “Whether it’s a painting that speaks to you or a song that brings back memories, the arts have a way of transcending our differences and bringing us closer as a community. That’s something I wanted to help foster through this year’s festival.”

As they prepare for the festival, Danielle and Garrett are focused on ensuring that the 2024 Jubilee Festival of Arts is not only a success but also a true reflection of the community’s spirit. “Our goal is to create an event that honors the traditions of the festival while also introducing some new elements that will excite and inspire everyone who attends,” Garrett shares.

Danielle adds, “We want people to walk away from this festival feeling proud of where they live and inspired by the creativity that surrounds them. That’s what the Jubilee Festival of Arts is all about.”

SuperMom Kendall Wahlert

Kendall Wahlert is devoted to faith, family, and a love for real estate. Born and raised in Columbus, Georgia, she met her husband, Ricky, in Mrs. Bryant's 6th-grade class. After college, the childhood friends began dating, setting the foundation for a life filled with love, faith, and adventure.

In 2014, Ricky's job brought them to the Eastern Shore. Kendall shares with a laugh that moving every two to three years as they have must kind of come along with being a Realtor. Now, settled in the fifth of their homes in Fairhope, they're busy transforming the Fish River residence into a place that truly reflects their family's spirit.

As the Alabama Broker and Co-Owner of Waters Edge Realty, alongside her close friend and business partner, April Hunt, she balances the demands of a thriving real estate career with the joys and challenges of motherhood. Her three children—Kaden, 17; Peyton, 15; and Greystan, 6—are the center of her world. Everything she does is rooted in her desire to give them a life filled with blessings and opportunities, all grounded in the unwavering belief that none of this would be possible without God's grace.

She and her family have always prioritized adventures and creating memories. Years ago, when the kids were asked whether they preferred more presents under the tree or a family trip, they chose the latter. Since then, their focus has been on exploring the world together, each trip a new chapter in their family story.

Her path to real estate began when she was just 16, touring homes under construction with her mother. By 20, she was licensed to sell in Georgia, her youthful enthusiasm quickly winning over clients. Now, as a seasoned professional, she starts each day with coffee, devotion, and time with her children, before taking time for herself at the gym and diving into her work. Whether in the office or with clients, she is fully present, ensuring that everyone she interacts with feels valued and heard.

For Kendall, the real reward isn't just in closing deals; it's in watching lives change. She finds immense joy in mentoring others, especially those starting with little and striving to build a better future. Seeing them succeed, buy homes, and provide for their families brings her the greatest satisfaction.

At the core of everything she does is her faith. She believes in thanking God for both the busy and the slow times, knowing that each season has its purpose. This gratitude extends to her family, where she is most proud of her children's growing faith. Kaden, though quiet about it, has witnessed the power of prayer firsthand. Peyton, inspired by a recent experience at church camp, is leading her friends closer to God. Even young Greystan, with his love of worship songs, is beginning to understand the importance of faith.

For this working mother, faith is not just a part of life; it is the foundation upon which everything else is built. Her story is one of love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to God and family, proving that with faith, all things are possible.

ANNA + JONATHAN

PHOTOS BY EMMA KENT PHOTOGRAPHY

After ten months of dating, the love story of Anna Elizabeth Delahunty and Jonathan James McGehee reached a beautiful milestone. Jonathan had a surprise in store that would forever change their lives.

“Jonathan and I were headed to brunch or so I thought. On our way to ‘brunch,’ Jonathan stopped by the bay to show me a new spot he had found. We love walking by the bay together and have made it part of our weekly routine. It had just finished pouring rain, so we were the only people out there. We walked down by the water until we approached an area with a large oak tree that had a rock formation underneath it. On the rock was a Bible, and behind it was a black iron cross covered in flowers. He handed me the Bible to show that it had my new name engraved on the bottom right corner."

Jonathan then opened the Bible to a page he had marked. He then read and exemplified John 13, “Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet." He did this to display the humility, selflessness and servant heart that is needed in a marriage. Jonathan used this passage to show his commitment to serve and love me in our marriage the way Christ loves His people and tells us to love others. He followed that passage with Colossians 3:12-16. These verses read, 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Anna said yes. As she did, their families, who had been hiding behind the trees, came out to celebrate with them. They all left the bay and headed to Jonathan’s parents’ Airbnb, where more family members awaited them for a surprise engagement party.

Their wedding was an intimate affair, with just family, the bridal party, and their plus-ones in attendance. Jonathan’s dad and a close family friend built the cross used as the altar. Anna stunned in an off-the-shoulder satin dress as she walked down the aisle to join Jonathan, surrounded by 11 groomsmen, 10 bridesmaids, and dozens of other guests. The wedding colors of sage green, blush pink, and ivory created a romantic atmosphere.

The celebration continued at The Fairhope Yacht Club, where guests enjoyed a four-tier cake adorned with whimsically placed blush pink and ivory roses and greenery. The Groom's Cake was red velvet, caramel and chocolate baby bites. The reception menu featured delicious hors d’oeuvres, including crab cakes, stuffed mushrooms, and mini twice-baked potatoes.

After a honeymoon in Costa Rica, Anna and Jonathan returned to Fairhope to begin their lifetime together.
