As big an impression as the organization made, Dunn’s stint with the AHA began in April of 2011, in her home state of Ohio. A year later, she visited Gulf Shores for the first time on vacation and saw an AHA billboard on route 59. Within three months, she had moved across the country to continue her role with the American Heart Association on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

WOMAN with A

s with most careers driven by passion, there’s a personal why that comes with the story of how Bridgett Dunn became American Heart Association on the Alabama Gulf Coast development director—and what led her to work with the organization to begin with.

“I began my fundraising career in college by working at Kent State University’s phone center, where I called alumni and asked them to give back to the university,” she recalls. “I became passionate about the non-profit world and worked for my alma mater after college as well as another non-profit. My family’s life was soon impacted by the work of the American Heart Association when, my mom, who was born with an abnormal heart valve, had to have it replaced. I later learned that the American Heart Association helped create the first artificial heart valve through research that is funded by generous donors through events. It became a personal mission of mine to raise funds for lifesaving research. The work of our organization helped our family lead a longer, healthier life with my mom by our side.”

“Through our Art for Heart Gala and Baldwin County Heart Walk Campaigns, we planted three American Heart Association Teaching Gardens in local elementary schools, where students, faculty, and parents benefit from curriculum and hands on learning experience about eating healthy and being active. Through the AHA’s advocacy efforts, all high school seniors in Alabama are required to know CPR upon graduation. I raised sponsorship dollars to place CPR in Schools Kits in all Baldwin County High Schools to give educators the tools to effectively teach this life saving technique. Through my campaigns, we provided 500 Infant Hands Only CPR Kits to Children’s and Women’s Hospital. We also placed CPR Anytime Kits in local faith-based organizations throughout Baldwin County. Additionally, 150 blood pressure cuffs were given to Franklin Primary Health. Hundreds of Infant CPR Kits were donated to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center and Thomas Hospital over the years. We even created and implemented an Anti-Vaping Campaign to schools in southern Baldwin County. We also donated over 400 athletic balls to Baldwin County schools to encourage physical activity.”

The changes implemented in the health of Baldwin County and in raising its awareness of heart health have clearly been wrought by the hands of someone who feels the weight of her mission immensely— and Dunn’s passionate advocacy of the cause is the very reason she has been so successful in her role. “It’s so incredibly important to me to educate our community on the warning signs of a heart attack and stroke,” she says. “I also preach to my family, loved ones and anyone who will listen about the warning signs. My mom attended one of my presentations and heard me talking about the warning signs of a stroke. She recognized the warning signs when she had her stroke and called 911. Since then, she has become a four-time mini stroke survivor. She knew the warning signs of a stroke because of the AHA, and it saved her life.”

As a development director, Dunn leads all aspects of the American Heart Association’s Art for Heart Gala as well as the Baldwin Heart Walk corporate fundraising campaigns. “I work with a community of volunteers to raise funds to move the needle of health in Baldwin County and beyond,” she notes. The impact made by those two initiatives—with Dunn’s oversight—has been invaluable.

Dunn’s greatest reward, of course, comes with seeing the living, breathing examples of change. “I love meeting a heart or stroke survivor and hearing their personal story of how the American Heart Association saved their lives through research, education or advocacy,” she says. “Knowing that the dollars we raise truly saves lives right here in Baldwin County and listening to how they can enjoy more of life’s precious moments with the ones they love is the greatest gift. I also have the best volunteers in the world. A lot of my volunteers become lifelong friends. I feel blessed to live in a community that gives back.”

There are, of course, challenges to changing the narrative and getting people to listen. “It is challenging to get people to understand that approximately 80 percent of cardiovascular disease and strokes are preventable,” she says. “A healthier diet, regular exercise, and not smoking can help you lead a heart-healthy life. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Add more color to your dinner plate, take a five minute walk, get an extra hour of sleep—these are all small steps to a healthier lifestyle, and they’re achievable.”

34TH ANNUAL GRAND SUMMER BALL | POINT CLEAR

After a two year hiatus, The Grand Summer Ball returned to The Grand Hotel. This was the 34th year that the event was held, and over half a million dollars was raised. This event is considered one of the premier fundraisers in the region and benefits Thomas Hospital Foundation. The event featured a delectable plated dinner, a signature drink, open bar, live music, and a breathtaking event design including artwork depicting the monarch butterfly. The monarch butterfly was the inspiration for the event’s them, and each couple received a limited-edition print of a beautiful butterfly painting by Elisabeth Hays.

to the chaos and unknown we felt as a family. With my husband focused on keeping COVID out of their buildings and no organized sports or activities for the kids to stay busy, I wanted to focus on family and try to enjoy the little things in life again. From playing board games to walking our dogs, I enjoyed the unexpected opportunity to do things together. We moved from Orange Beach to Montrose in July of 2020, and we have grown to love this area and truly enjoy the sense of community it has brought to our family. I plan to enter the workforce soon, but in the meantime, I have immersed myself in volunteer work for the American Heart Association, my children’s school and other local charities.”

ometimes the plan we have for our lives seems to disappear under our feet. While it’s not always easy to walk the new reality, sometimes we find unexpected blessings along the way. For Eva Wilmott, becoming a stay-at-home mom wasn’t something she ever planned. But when the world was plunged into the uncertainty of the pandemic, her career became a casualty— and motherhood became a full-time focus. “I’ve always enjoyed working, but in March of 2020, my position was downsized due to COVID-19,” explains Wilmott, who previously worked for Maho Shades as a customer relations manager. “With schools going remote and my husband being pulled heavily into his senior facilities, I had to stay home with our children, bringing routine

Being at home and in such a present role, Wilmott sees the opportunity she’s been given. “I’m truly blessed and grateful to be home and more handson with raising Hudson and Reece,” she says. “In previous years, my job prevented me from enjoying school achievements, tournaments or games and even family vacations. Having the ability to be more present in their daily lives has been a total game changer for our busy family. We’re always on the move, and I feel like having a flexible schedule has really made life less stressful and more structured.”

As unanticipated as motherhood may have been, Wilmott had some great inspiration on which to build. “I have to give my mother a lot of credit for setting the bar really high on being a ‘super mom,’” she says. “She continues to give me love and guidance, which has really helped me become the mother I am today. She taught me how to listen to my children and to be patient, and she has been a great role model for me and now for the kids.”

Married eight years, Wilmott became a stepmother to her husband’s children, who are now 15 and 13—another unexpected gift on a path she never saw in her future. “I became a stepmother at 30 years old,” she says. “While I thought I would marry one day, being a stepparent was never part of my life plan. But when I met Nick, I knew my heart was in trouble. I fell head over heels in love with him and his precious children. I knew then I would be responsible for three hearts and not just one. The moment I said, ‘I do,’ my life changed from just ‘me’ to ‘we.’ Being a stepmom has been one of the most rewarding and humbling experiences of my life.”

SUPERMOM 28 SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

Naturally, there are things that she hopes Hudson and Reece take away from life with her as a parent. “I hope they cherish the family traditions we’re creating and blending from Nick’s family and mine,” she says. “I hope I have shown them the importance of giving back through my volunteer work, and I hope they carry a kind heart and willingness to help others in need. Most importantly, I hope they see how much I love them and their father.”

24820 CANAL ROAD | ORANGE BEACH, ALABAMA | MELANIEMARTININTERIORS.COM | (251) 981-1080

Over the past eight years of motherhood, Wilmott has learned some valuable life lessons. “I’ve learned not to strive for perfection but strive to be present,” she notes. “Being a stepparent has its own challenges, but I’ve learned from mistakes made and feel like I am constantly evolving as a parent. Parenthood requires personal sacrifice, a lot of patience and a level of maturity to put aside your own feelings in order to keep a positive environment for your children. Being a mother has also taught me how to be a better listener and more compassionate for what others may be going through. Hudson and Reece still amaze me with their ability to love unconditionally and their desire for excellence in all their endeavors. I can’t wait to see what great things they accomplish in this world. I am truly grateful and honored to be their stepmom.”

f the worth of the global pet industry is any indication, people love their pets. Cats, dogs, micro-pigs…you name it, people adopt them into their family and shower them with affection. Unfortunately, there’s the flip side of that coin, the heart-breaking cases of abuse and neglect that leave an animal either fending for themselves or at the mercy of their circumstances. Situations such as this are why organizations like the Baldwin Humane Society exist, to give aid and shelter to these poor, defenseless creatures and find them forever homes with families or individuals who will lavish them with the love and attention they have been so starved of.

raised through this event have been extremely beneficial—despite the challenges of dealing with COVID. “Even through COVID, we’ve been able to give back to Baldwin Humane approximately $110,000 over the last two years combined—that goes a long way with our efforts. It’s encouraging to have the support of the community and be in a community that shows up for great causes like this.” Last year’s event helped place more than 400 animals both locally and around the country through adoptions or to partnering rescue, and BHS was able to issue over 4,000 low-cost spay/neuter vouchers in addition to spaying/neutering and vaccinating more than 500 cats through their trap-neuter-return program. This particular program houses anywhere from 60 to 100 animals at any given time.

Established in 1979 as the first no-kill shelter in Baldwin County, the organization is completely reliant on the generosity of donations and grants, as well as any financial support that comes from special events or fundraisers throughout the year. One such event is The Hound Dog Music Fest, now in its fifth year. Created to benefit the efforts of the Baldwin Humane Society, the purpose of the festival is also to promote the image of BHS, educate the public on exactly what they are about, no-kill rescues, spaying and neutering.

The beautiful white sand beaches on the bay are just one of the many stunning features that make Fairhope a visual gem. Now 100 years after its creation, the community has been developed to fulfill every hope of those original founders. It has a very active arts community, a high-quality school system, and great opportunities to work and play. With all this to offer, it still retains its small-town ambience and neighborly appeal.

Situated in the northwest corner of Mobile Bay lies the city of Mobile, Alabama, within easy land or sea reach. All the excitement and amenities of a major metro area can be found in this city of 200,000 people.

Clearly, The Hound Dog Music Fest makes quite a difference—and that difference starts with the people who come, each year to support it. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door and can be purchased at the Baldwin Humane Society Hound Dog Music Fest Facebook page, through Brownpapertickets.com, in-person at Stowe’s Jewelers or the Baldwin Humane Society. Refreshments will be available at food trucks on the premises during the festival, and there’s fun to be had for the whole family. “This is a great time for everyone, both old and young,” says Fugard. “We look forward to seeing the community and welcome their support!”

The two-story home is a study of light and angles, with a multitude of windows inset into the cream stucco façade, which, barring Martin’s own description of the architecture, might otherwise be classified as transitional. It follows her ethos of bringing in elements of both old and new, which can be seen in high relief throughout the interior of spaces—which, naturally, bear her finger prints in every single element.

M

But none is more personal, of course, than her own home on Ono Island. With an architectural style that she describes as “edgy,” the four bedroom, five bath home is a juxtaposition of modern and traditional, with elements that marry the two polar opposites with ease as well as a deft understanding of how to make them work in concert, rather than seeming to clash.

uch like the American actress turned interior designer and author Elsie de Wolfe, Melanie Martin has built her life on making things beautiful. She loves to live among beautiful things herself, and that sensibility has made her a well-known interior designer throughout the Gulf South over the past three decades. A career that has seen her mark left on some very prestigious projects.

Built by Loper Construction with architecture by McCollough Architecture, the construction was completed in 2020. The home is set right on Old River and offers a spectacular view of the Gulf of Mexico and Perdido Key across the water—something which the banks of windows at the back of the home capitalize on. Lush and almost tropical in feel, the surrounding landscape offers the perfect canvas for the home itself as well as the glittering pool that seems almost dropped into a carpet of grass—which is actually artificial turf. “I wanted to avoid the typical concrete or stone surrounding the pool, which gets extremely hot in the sun,” explains Martin, who, along with architect Stead McCollough and builder Chad Loper, is part of what has become known as the Dream Team because of the many high-end projects on which they have collaborated. “Artificial turf is much easier to walk on, and there is none of the maintenance required of a natural lawn.”

Inside, a neutral palette of creams and whites offer a blank canvas that allows color to stand out and give space for details to shine. Overhead, massive wooden beams run along the ceiling and break up the otherwise unremarkable expanse of white. Facing out toward a wall of telescoping glass doors that open out onto the patio, the kitchen that “doesn’t look like a kitchen,” is set unobtrusively into the open concept living spaces. Created to look more like part of the furniture, the dark custom cabinetry seamlessly hides a refrigerator and the other appliances common to a kitchen, only hinting at its purpose through a range top and, inset into a sprawling quartz island, a sink with brushed gold fixtures that echo the gold tones of the duo of abstract pendant lamps that seem to hover overhead. A bank of white cabinetry matches that of the center island, giving the space that juxtaposition of light and dark that Martin so loves to explore.

The bedrooms are equally attended to, of course, with a room for her three granddaughters that holds three queen-sized beds and special photos that have been enlarged and printed on canvas above them. “The girls absolutely love their room,” says Martin, whose affection is obvious in her voice.

The master suite is fit for the queen of the house and takes absolute advantage of the home’s location. A completely open space, the bedroom flows into the ensuite, which opens out onto a second-story deck, courtesy of a wall of telescoping glass doors that match those on the floor below. “It’s almost like bathing outside,” Martin explains of the absolute openness of the space. Luxurious detailing and finishes give this a sanctuary feel, an escape from the everyday that make it all the more appealing. Closets flanking the space provide capacious storage, and a morning bar offers the perfect way to wake up and face the day.

There are touches—a massive tortoise shell, an antique door made into a table and set on a Lucite base that gives it the look of floating in the air, chandeliers sourced from her travels—that all have a personal story for Martin. They lend to the layering of the spaces, giving it a depth and dimension that cannot be found in anything picked off a showroom floor. “When I design a space, I use pieces that are collected, mixing styles and textures and finishes so that it’s completely unique and unlike anything you would find in a typical furniture store,” says Martin. Part of that also comes from the art, which Martin features with great pride throughout her home, pieces painted and created by her late son, Mikall.

After two years of dating, that inseparability was made even greater when Aaron created an elaborate scheme that would end in popping the question. “I was under the impression that we were going to eat at Jesse’s, our favorite date night spot in Magnolia Springs, and that we were all meeting up at my parents’ house on Fish River before dinner,” Erica recalls. “This was nothing out of the ordinary, so I really didn’t think anything of it. When Aaron and I arrived at the river, he was eager to show me a landscape project that he had been working on, a beautiful patio with white pavers overlooking the river. He had a photographer hiding in the bushes to capture our engagement. After I said yes, we met all of our family and closest friends at The Wash House restaurant to celebrate. Then, I found out that our extended family and friends were waiting on us at the Lucky Horseshoe Saloon. I could not believe how much planning and hard work Aaron put into making our engagement so special.”

oth born and raised on the Eastern Shore, it was only a matter of time before Erica Cockrell and Aaron Faust went from “knowing of one another” to actually knowing one another. That time came during Iron Bowl weekend in 2018, when they were both in Tuscaloosa visiting friends and rooting for Bama. “Our mutual friends officially introduced us, but it didn’t go anywhere until we both returned home for Christmas break and ran into each other again,” says Erica, who now works as a teacher at Spanish Fort Elementary, while Aaron works as a landscaper for Ponder Landscape. “We exchanged phone numbers, and then fate really slapped us in the face. We ran into each other at a crosswalk in downtown New Orleans for New Year’s Eve and then spent all night dancing. We’ve been together ever since!”

Just over a year later, on June 11, 2022, Erica wore a fit-to-flare ivory crepe sheath gown with a scoop neckline, cap sleeves with beaded lace that also covered the keyhole back, with trailing white buttons all the way down to the long train at the back. As she and Aaron stood at the altar at Trinity Presbyterian Church in downtown Fairhope, the two exchanged vows and were pronounced married—happily without the added excitement of anyone in the wedding party going into labor.

BRIDE SEPTEMBER 2022 67

“My sister, and Matron of Honor, was nine months pregnant, so we were all praying she wouldn’t go into labor while standing up at the altar,” Erica says with a laugh. “When we loaded the trolley following the ceremony, everyone raised their glasses and cheered for her and the baby.”

After arriving to the reception at Belforest Pointe in Daphne, the couple joined their guests for a buffet dinner that included a carving station as well as a shrimp and grits bar. Having fueled up for the party, the newlyweds really got into the fun. “Aaron has always been known for his outstanding karaoke rendition of ‘Love Shack,’ and I’ve gotten plenty of practice over the years singing with him,” says Erica. “So when the song came on during our reception, we immediately made our way on the stage and took over the microphones. The whole crowd went crazy, singing along and dancing, so we like to think that we absolutely crushed it!”

Making their exit in a 1931 Ford Roadster that has been a Cockrell family tradition that started with Erica’s parents, Erica and Aaron headed off to honeymoon at Sandals Resort in Barbados. Now back home on the Eastern Shore, the happy couple is looking forward to everything else fate has planned for their future together.

As the time to cut the cake came, the couple exchanged bites of a four-tier masterpiece of vanilla crumb covered in buttercream and adorned with cascading flowers. The party continued late into the night, when everyone

I loved creating even as a little girl. I was Editor of The Fairhope High School art magazine, Visions, and I minored in art in college. Art has been a part of my life as long as I can remember, but it was more of a hobby. When the pandemic hit, I was looking for ways to stay busy during quarantine, and I had recently moved into a new space with all grey walls. I decided the only way to get through quarantine sane was to add patterns and color to the space. The challenge of doing big walls really lit a passion in me. I was enthralled by not having the parameters of a confined canvas. I started doing painted wallpapers in my own home, and I had such a positive reaction from family and friends who pushed me to pursue art in large scale. And... here we are! My style is full of color and movement. Inspiration comes from funky, fun design and reimagining bright retro vibes of the 1960s and 1970s. My daughter, Birdy, is my biggest inspiration. I want to raise a strong woman, and it brings me so much motivation to know that I have little eyes watching me follow my dream and taking note.

[MOBILE, AL] — Thomas Hospital, an affiliate of Infirmary Health, announces that Paul Glisson, DO has accepted the position of Vice President, Chief Medical Officer and Assistant Chief Information Officer for Thomas Hospital as of April 2022. Dr. Glisson returns to Infirmary Health from Baptist Healthcare in Pensacola where he most recently served as Vice President of Medical Affairs and Quality and Chief Informatics Officer.

“One major focus of this research is to understand how the bunyavirus survives the molting process between tick life stages and the timeline during which the virus disseminates between organs within the tick body,” Hermance said. “In other words, we want to determine where does the virus reside in the tick body before it ends up in the tick salivary glands and ultimately gets transmitted to the next host the tick feeds on.”

[MOBILE, AL] — Michael Mansour, M.D., FACC, FACP, interventional cardiologist, joins Diagnostic & Medical Clinic from the Mississippi Gulf Coast region. Diagnostic & Medical Clinic is the largest private multi-specialty clinic in Alabama, with than 80 physicians treating a broad range of specialties.

Dr. Mansour earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi and completed his residency with Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He is fellowship-trained in cardiology and interventional cardiology by the University of Florida and Harvard Medical School, respectively. Dr. Mansour is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. As a member of the American College of Cardiology, he has served in multiple leadership roles, including Chair of the Board of Governors.

[MOBILE, AL] — Tick-borne infections can lead to serious illnesses – and even death – in people and pets. To create effective treatments for these diseases, scientists first must figure out the basic infection biology of the ticks they study.

EASTERN SHORE

Diagnostic & Medical Clinic welcomes interventional cardiologist, Michael Mansour, MD, FACC, FACP

Collaborators on the research project are Jason Strickland, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Biology at USA with an adjunct appointment in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Whiddon College of Medicine; and Thuy Phung, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Pathology and Medical Director of Molecular Genetic Pathology & Dermatopathology.

“We are very excited to have Dr. Glisson join our award-winning team at Thomas Hospital,” said Ormand Thompson, president of Thomas Hospital. “Dr. McBrearty provided exceptional leadership over the last two decades, and we cannot thank him enough for his service to our hospital and the community.”

A second focus of the research is to define the minimum amount of time an infected tick needs to feed in order to transmit the bunyavirus to a vertebrate host, Hermance said, noting that she and her colleagues also will examine the initial immune response that occurs in the host's skin at the feeding site of the infected tick.

Researchers at the University of South Alabama plan to use a $2.59 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to do just that, laying the groundwork for developing a way to stop transmission of an emerging tick-borne virus native to Asia.

Dr. Glisson succeeds Dr. Michael McBrearty, who recently retired as Vice Medical Affairs for Thomas Hospital. Dr. McBrearty joined the Thomas Hospital leadership team in 1998 as Vice President Medical Affairs. He has had many successful achievements during his 24 years of service, including leadership and growth of the medical staff, commitment to quality and safety initiatives and development and implementation of the internal medicine residency program. Dr. McBrearty provided exemplary leadership in the development of processes and protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic. He will continue to see patients in his private practice.

Dr. Mansour has been a leader in the Mississippi healthcare community for more than 20 years. In addition to his work in private practice, he has served in leadership positions with the Mississippi State Medical Association, Delta Medical Society, Mississippi State Department of Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi and is regularly published in the Journal of Mississippi State Medical Association. Dr. Mansour is also an affiliate faculty member with the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. Dr. Mansour will see patients at Diagnostic & Medical Clinic’s locations in midtown Mobile and on Hillcrest Road.

Meghan Hermance, Ph.D., an assistant professor of microbiology and immunology at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at USA, recently received the five-year award to study the infection dynamics of a tick-borne bunyavirus called severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus or SFTSV. Thrombocytopenia means low platelet count.

Dr. Glisson earned a B.S. in chemistry from Auburn University in 1992, a Ph.D. in Osteopathic Medicine from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 1996 and an MBA in healthcare administration in 2008. From 2001 to 2005, Dr. Glisson served as Emergency Room Medical Director for Thomas Hospital. In addition to his extensive experience and knowledge in emergency medicine and medical record informatics, Dr. Glisson is a published author.

An emerging tick-borne disease caused by the bunyavirus, SFTSV is transmitted by the Haemaphysalis longicornis tick. While the tick is native to East Asia, it recently spread to the United States and beyond, establishing invasive populations.

The rising incidence of SFTSV cases in Asia, lack of specific treatment strategies, high case fatality rates, and global expansion of the tick vector make the virus a public health concern. Because of its ability to cause hemorrhagic disease and lack of specific treatment strategies, SFTSV is considered a priority infectious disease by the World Health Organization.

Past collaborative studies found that patients in the intensive care unit who contracted bacterial pneumonia have elevated levels of cytotoxic species, which are substances that damage or kill cells. These cytotoxins can be found in several bodily fluids, including bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, cerebrospinal fluid and blood collected from the patients. The presence of cytotoxins indicates they may spread from the lung to the brain after a bacterial pneumonia infection, Lin said.

“We are excited to partner with Mobile County Public Schools to sustain the health and wellbeing of their student athletes and support their athletic programs,” said James Slauterbeck, M.D., Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and sports medicine surgeon at the Frederick P. A collaboration between the University of South Alabama and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the study builds upon Lin’s previous research grant from the NIH, which totaled $1.7 million over a four-year period.
