JOHN NICKENS CEO, Children’s Hospital New Orleans
W
ith so many different diseases, epidemics, and medical issues plaguing the nation, healthcare is a challenging field. To be the president and CEO of a hospital—any hospital—takes great a great deal of dedication, foresight, diplomacy, and understanding; but the need for those characteristics come even more into play for the president and CEO of a children’s hospital. Luckily for Children’s Hospital New Orleans, the man bearing those titles meets those demands and then some, using his position and deep knowledge of the healthcare industry to serve the needs of the children of New Orleans in the best way possible.
With more than 25 years of pediatric healthcare experience under his belt, John Nickens took on his current role at Children’s Hospital New Orleans in 2017. The former Executive Vice President at Texas Children’s Hospital brought with him a particular understanding of children’s health and the challenges it faces. During his time in his previous position, he came to possess extensive operational experience in both pediatric and maternal health services, oversaw the implementation of two electronic medical record systems, and played a crucial role in bringing Texas Children’s to its ranking as third in the nation.

N
aturally, his reputation for getting things done preceded him, and Nickens is certainly living up to expectations. Since coming to New Orleans, he has made remarkable changes to Children’s Hospital, creating an incredible culture for the hospital’s team members, expanding access to vital pediatric services across the entire state, launching the hospital’s first electronic medical record system, recruiting some of the top pediatric experts in the country, and creating a new academic partnership with Tulane University School of Medicine.
“I’m tackling the poor health outcomes of Louisiana’s children head on by investing in infrastructure, building a culture of ownership with a number on focus on safety and quality, recruiting some of the nation’s top leaders in pediatric healthcare to join the Children’s Hospital team, and creating a world-class experience for patients and families,” says Nickens, who is himself the father of three daughters and the grandfather of five. “The children of Louisiana are experiencing some of the worst child health outcomes in our country. Through investments in infrastructure, programs, innovation, people, and community programs, Children’s Hospital is working tirelessly to improve the significant health challenges our kids and communities are facing. Our children and our state are counting on us—all of us—to do more, to do better; and Children’s Hospital is responding with an unwavering commitment to do so,” he goes on. “Our vision is to change the face of healthcare for all children, and we are reaching out into the community and forming partnerships across the state that allow us to play an active role in influencing the social determinants of child health. A great example of this is the integration of the Tulane University School of Medicine into the pediatric academic medical programs at Children’s Hospital earlier this year, along with our long-standing partnership with LSU Health New Orleans.”

Clearly, the man has a passion for children and making their care more of a priority as well as raising the standard of that care, and he’s made that passion a great motivator for getting things done. “Children’s Hospital is uniquely positioned to eliminate fragmentation and bring together the best of the best in pediatric healthcare to challenge the status quo,” says Nickens, who also serves on the boards of the Audubon Institute, Louisiana Children’s Museum, and Baylor University in addition to overseeing pediatric services across the LCMC Health system. “Now is the time to transform how we provide healthcare for our kids. The consistent ranking of our state as one of the worst in child health outcomes does not match the rich culture and passion of the people of Louisiana. At Children’s Hospital New Orleans, we are daring to say: No more!”

My inspiration comes from my love of fashion and my desire to cover my college expenses while doing what I absolutely love. The best feeling is a satisfied customer who sends me photos in their Bello clothing. Of course, I share them all on my social media accounts! Being a full-time college student and owning my business is hard work but the desire to succeed keeps me going. Bello has BIG plans for the future so be sure to follow us at every opportunity.

edarwood School is a place where children feel safe and confident to learn, explore and navigate their world. Cedarwood School is a coeducational, nondenominational, independent school built to resemble a home in 1983. The school's seven-acre campus offers beautiful walkways, a courtyard, a swimming pool, grassy fields, welcoming classrooms, and outdoor learning spaces. When children know that they are in a safe place physically and emotionally, their minds are free to actively engage and enjoy the learning process. In fact, new families continuously remark on how happy and eager their children are to attend Cedarwood.
Cedarwood School's curriculum goes beyond the educational standards and aims to enrich the lives of our students. Through rich classroom experiences and meaningful relationships with teachers and peers, our students become empowered to embrace their uniqueness, share their voices, and problem solve. Cedarwood's students succeed academically and develop a strong sense of confidence to drive their learning as they become resilient, innovative, articulate, and creative thinkers for life. These are the qualities that will help our children become successful. Cedarwood School nurtures its student's character through weekly spirit words and collaborative learning, promoting compassion, cooperation, and kindness. Our engaging and inspiring teachers are present to encourage, nurture and challenge each student to reach their full potential. Parents feel assured that each student is heard and valued at Cedarwood School. The students are the heartbeat of the school, and you can trust that their minds will not only thrive, but their hearts will too. 30

KITCHEN For so many cultures, food is a way to celebrate, to commiserate, to comfort, to connect. The act of making that food is an act of love and expression; it’s also an outlet for creativity. Recipes are passed down through generations, methods are taught to children who watch expectantly—and it is those children who are most often impacted early on by the power of cooking.
special celebrations that we take with us though life? Culinary Kids helps create those and leaves a mark on every family.”
Most impactful has been Hansen’s work with special needs students through the creation of an All Abilities class. Designed for young adults with special needs, the class is a reflection of her natural skill in working with individuals with varied abilities For Sherri Hansen, teaching children how to cook and diagnoses. “It’s the most impactful work I can has long been an important part of giving them do, and we help provide a safe space for kids to learn a successful future. Above all, the connection that in a trusted environment,” explains Hansen. “This comes through cooking has been her greatest class was a priority because I’d noticed a gap in motivator; and since establishing Culinary Kids in extracurricular lessons and services for special needs 2012, she has been helping forge those connections students in high school, graduating and beginning between kids and their families. “Everyone needs adult life.” The Thursday night class at Culinary to eat, and people tend to come together culturally Kids features certified paraprofessionals leading over food, so my goal was to encourage families students through dinner and dessert recipes in each to spend time together, building confidence in the class, with a focus on social and independent living kitchen and impart useful life skills that will make skills, building confidence, and kitchen safety. “The memories and span generations,” explains Hansen, staff invests so much in the class and get to know who spent 20 years as a non-profit educator. “Don’t the students after years of participation, and it truly we all have a favorite family recipe or memory from becomes a bonding experience.”
Naturally, their biggest challenge lies in working with such a wide range of different skills and needs in one class, from Down’s Syndrome and Autism to Cerebral Palsy and developmental delay. Such a span requires a large number of staff to provide one-onone attention, and accommodating associated food allergies and dietary restrictions requires a great deal of advanced planning. Still, they rise to the challenge. The impact made has been incredible, and some of Hansen’s previous special needs students have gone on to become hired staff. The program has also created a partnership with the LA Workforce Commission’s Louisiana Rehabilitation Services to help place, train, and hire people with disabilities to work at Culinary Kids. The special class has also gained support from Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser, and plans include the development of a non-profit foundation to reach more people in the community with varied abilities and help them develop job skills. YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS
Sisters
of Light
W
hile most people would expect 10- and 12-yearolds to be a number of years off from catching the entrepreneurial bug, sisters Mia and Ava Cresap of Mandeville used their creativity, ingenuity, and enterprising spirit to start their own tie-dye tee-shirt business in December 2020. Their inspiration? The darkness they could see all around them in the midst of the pandemic.
The design process began as it so often does, with the seed of an idea and a design that took shape at the kitchen table, with paper and pencils in hand. After Ava drew a half-sun with the words “Sisters of Light” under it, the girls’ mother saw a vision of the logo with a cross over the sun. The morning after that middleof-the-night vision, she added the cross to Ava’s drawing—an addition that transformed the picture to a cross on a hill. The girls loved it and began designing the back of four shirts, choosing inspirational messages as well as John 8:12, which says, “I am the Light of the World, He who follows me shall by no means walk in darkness.” With their history of giving, which began with a hair tie business they began several years ago to raise money for Food for the Poor to build homes in Haiti, it follows that Mia and Ava would feel led to give all proceeds from their shirts to a cause. Ultimately, they decided to donate to the Brooke It Forward Foundation, which is dedicated to shoebox-sized acts of kindness providing “birthday boxes” to children whose birthdays might otherwise be overlooked due to placement in foster care, displacement as a result of disaster, domestic violence, poverty, or other circumstances. For the two girls, the idea that a child might not have anyone to celebrate their birthday was heartbreaking; and they felt an immediate connection to the organization. “I hope to inspire others to be kind and to inspire other kids to do something to help the less fortunate,” explains Ava. In a few short months, they have donated around $1,500 to Brooke it Forward. “I want to be a light to others,” says Mia.

KING Jennifer SUPERMOM BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
F
or Jennifer King, the example her parents set for her is one she’s always tried to emulate as a mother, making sacrifices and working hard to support her children and give them the greatest possible opportunities. When circumstances changed and she had to rely on herself as a single mother, all of that became of even greater importance. “Some moms are rock star professionals. Some moms are stay-athome heroes. I like to think I fall somewhere in the middle. Everyone has their path, and even though mine doesn’t look the way I thought it would, I’m blessed and know I was placed right where I needed to be. I think I’ve been able to show my kids a great balance of work and family,” says King, who works with her father at Year-Round Heating and A/C.
With a boy and two girls aged 11, 7, and 5, King has a full plate of dance lessons, baseball tournaments, and soccer games—all of which, when added to her work at her father’s company as well as her more recent role as a makeup artist with Seint, give her a calendar that never empties. Even with such a crazed schedule, she knows she’s doing something important for her family and herself. “My secondary jobs allow me to harness the more creative side of Jen while supplementing my income and helping me to work on my own personal growth,” she explains.

“When they’re older, I want my children to remember how well loved they were. Not just in words but in action.”
Above all, however, is her love for her children. In all that she does, she does it for them. “When they’re older, I want my children to remember how well loved they were. Not just in words but in action. I’d bleed myself dry so that they can have an amazing life full of wonderful memories and filled with opportunity. I hope they’ll also remember how much fun we had together and what a very special relationship we have,” says King, who has a tradition of Friday night dance parties in the living room with her kids. “We have this ability to have raw, straightup conversations about life, and I make it a point to use hard things as learning opportunities. There is a trust between us that is next-level. I don’t know how to explain that except that our circumstances bonded us in a way that goes beyond that of a mother and child. Some days we talk like friends, and I think that’s a really cool thing.” Through everything that life has thrown at her, King perseveres and stays strong for her children,

knowing the importance of the example she sets for the three young pairs of eyes watching. “I think my children have gotten to see the grit and persistence it takes to do it all even when the deck appears to be stacked against you,” she says. “A really wise friend of mine who grew up in a split household told me never to doubt for one second that my kids are watching everything I do. That has stuck with me. My kids have not only seen my joy and thirst for life, but they have also seen me struggle. Most days, they know I’m exhausted. They’ve seen me hit my wall and break down at times. They’ve also seen me get right back up and keep grinding through it. And when times get hard, they’ve seen me find a way, no matter what it takes. They know Momma doesn’t get knocked down for long. And when she gets up, watch out! If life ever finds them in a difficult situation, I hope they will know and believe that they, too, have it in them to press on and do a great job!”
King was also fiercely determined to give her children a sense of normalcy in the midst of all the change that naturally comes with divorce. “That was extremely important to me,” she says. “Their lives had changed enough, so keeping them active and doing the things they love with the people they love was and still is critical.” In her own struggles, she has learned ways to help others experiencing divorce, offering them support and love. “To be able to lift up another hurting person either with humor, inspiration, a story they can relate to, or by sharing The Word with them was an amazing experience,” she says of the support groups she helped facilitate with a friend. “We grew so much through that time as people, in our faith; but it really gave us a sense of community, which is so important when going through such a traumatic time.” For all that she’s been through, King never forgets the most important thing at the heart of it all: her children.

Offering customized orthodontic treatment for patients of all ages including early treatment, comprehensive treatment with traditional braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces, clear aligners (Invisalign), adult comprehensive treatment, and retainers, Dr. Timothy Poyadou, Jr., has been correcting the smiles of the Northshore area since 2010. Over the past 11 years, his practice at Empower Orthodontics has become known for their expertise and dedication to providing the very best orthodontic solutions available. Throughout the course of his career, Poyadou has set himself apart as an orthodontist—not only for his professional achievements, but also in the way that he connects personally with his patients and tries to set them at ease. He proudly holds the title of being second in the nation in the Invisalign resident challenge in 2013 and is an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Southern Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, and the Diplomate American Board of Orthodontists as well as being an Award Winning Invisalign Provider, Orthodontic Vanguard Society Member, and holding Incognito Lifetime Certification.
THE SMILE D CTOR By Liesel Schmidt
A key aspect of a healthy, confident, beautiful smile is straight teeth, but many people struggle with the issue of crooked teeth, overbites, and underbites. As one of the best solutions for these dental conditions, braces and invisible aligners have long been in use to correct teeth and create smiles that people are proud to show off with newfound confidence. 42
SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
It is his personality—and his backstory—that most sets him apart, however. “My life has been an evolutionary process filled with many landmarks and learning experiences,” says Poyadou, who became a first-generation college student in the small fishing village where he was born. Working tirelessly to put himself through college, he gained a strong work ethic and business experience before going on to LSU Dental School. Again, his self-motivation and strong focus drove him forward, and Poyadou represented LSU nationally with the highest NBDE part I and part II score in his class. Following graduation, he attended a one-year fellowship in Clinical Orthodontics at Jacksonville University before being accepted into the two-year residency there. After obtaining his Florida dental license, he worked with a private practice until moving back to Louisiana after completing his Orthodontic Residency. Back in Louisiana, Poyadou worked with several orthodontic practices until he was confident that he could launch a practice of his own. Since then, he has built a thriving practice that also has a heart for giving back. “I founded a program called America Smiles, offering $25-50,000 a year in free treatment for kids in the foster system as well as the children of disabled or fallen veterans,” says Poyadou, who is himself the father of two boys. A non-profit organization that promotes and provides access to lifechanging, essential orthodontic treatment for children who experience severe hardship and/or circumstances, America Smiles services St. Tammany Parish, Jefferson, Boutte and neighboring parishes in Louisiana with the possibility of expanding services nationwide. “Watching a kid who doesn’t look you in the eyes and is rather shy at the start of treatment and seeing them transform into someone who is unbelievably more confident and outgoing is what I love most about my work, and this program gives me the opportunity to give that to children who otherwise might never have the ability to pay for treatment,” explains Poyadou, clearly determined to bridge the gap. From the confident grins of children to the self-assured smiles of adults, Poyadou only has to look around to see the marks of his success—and he’s just getting started.

With its curved windows and archways; massive, mullioned windows; and handsome landscaping, the house at 212 Oleander Court in Mandeville is the picture of Modern French Provincial design, boasting a generous 10,000 square feet that comprises a stunning study of architectural detail.

ontaining five bedrooms, five full and two half baths, and various other rooms including a theater room, playroom, wine room, sitting room, and den, the house has no shortage of space—and no shortage of unique characteristics. Immediately upon entering, the eye is drawn to some aspect of design: the warm hardwood flooring repurposed from an old fence in Kentucky; the brickwork archway leading into the living area; the high, coved ceilings. The mixture of cool white walls, rich wood, and exposed brick gives the home a distinctive aesthetic, offering a boho-chic/modern-farmhouse feel that is welcoming while still being incredibly stylish. “The house has a lot of texture and depth, and that’s something people definitely notice,” says Jennifer Bodin, who owns the home with her husband, Ryan. A former cheerleader for the New Orleans Saints and owner of three Pure Barre locations across the North and South Shores, Jennifer is now a stay-athome mom to her three young children while working with her husband in real estate investment.

“The energy inside of this house is good, and the flow of the floorplan is perfect,” says Jennifer. The floorplan is, indeed, perfect in its flow, as the main living areas are open and spacious, seamless in their transitions from one to the next. Understandably, the large foyer is a highlyused area—most notably for its use as a scooter track. “My kids refer to our foyer as the ‘lobby’ because it’s a such a large room,” says Jennifer, whose charges also include a bulldog named Lola and a cat whose name is Lily. “They like to play in that room and even ride their scooters inside.”

Clearly, the Bodins are a family far from precious about maintaining a pristine abode. Rather, they live—truly live—in the home, playing and adding their own imperfections to an otherwise perfect scene. Pops of soft color show Jennifer’s influence, giving character to an otherwise muted palette. And upstairs, the playroom is evocative of a children’s museum, with faux building facades painted in pastels and soaring ceilings that span the entire height of two-stories. “It’s an amazing space for the kids to play, and they especially love the lofts on top,” Jennifer says.

Naturally, the kitchen is befitting of a home so grand, with a large center island whose dark cabinetry is a perfect counterbalance to the blue-gray tones of the perimeter cabinets. Bright white marble countertops add a sleekness to the space, and highend appliances disappear behind cabinet doors, leaving no interruption save for the chef-grade stainless steel range. Above the undermount sink, a large picture window overlooks the backyard, which backs up to a wooded area. Steps away, the dining area is flooded with light from a wall of windows, while just off the kitchen is a massive pantry, complete with walls of shelving of cabinetry matching those found in the kitchen.

The master bedroom is an oasis for the two elder Bodins, an escape from the chaos of work, life, and three tiny people—plus animals. Dividing a sitting area from the bed side is one of the three fireplaces in the home—a feature which is used all year round, regardless of the season. In the master ensuite, the white marble countertops give a sense of elegance, with ceiling height mirrors, a generous spa shower, a large freestanding soaking tub, separate vanities and dual closets completing the space. Adding a touch of color, pink grasscloth wallpaper in the toilet room and Jennifer’s master closet are indicative of her personality and love for color. “I had fun with wallpaper in this house,” says Jennifer, pointing out her use of metallic grasscloth, feather-festooned paper, and the lively blue palm leaves adorning the walls of the mudroom.

Outside, the screened-in porch features a fireplace and a small outdoor kitchen area. “We love to grill out there and look out at nature—we’ve seen a lot of deer at night from our backyard,” Jennifer says. Plans are in place for the addition of a pool over the summer. BRIDE
Amy & JeanPaul
Pre-Destined
for Love By Liesel Schmidt
While Amy Fairbank and JeanPaul Guidry may have always known each other through their parents, it wasn’t until adulthood that they finally got to really know one another. Years of hinting and planning by both sets of parents to, as JeanPaul puts it, “marry their offspring” had gone unheeded, but a visit from Amy’s dad early in the summer of 2019 seemed to change everything. Motivated to finally make the move that he had been so long been avoiding, JeanPaul contacted Amy and suggested a date. After a lunch at Baco Bar in Covington on June 18th, 2019, that was “more like a reunion of two old friends than an explosion of love at first sight,” the pair decided to hang out again that weekend. oth adventure seekers, the two became fast friends—and then they became more. After dating for a year, JeanPaul knew that the girl he had known from afar for his whole life was someone he wanted to know and be with for the rest of his life. “I bought Amy an Osprey hiking pack that I filled with stuff she would need to go on a surprise trip to Colorado I had planned for the next day. The last pocket she opened had the ring in it,” says JeanPaul of his creative proposal on July 27, 2020. “We had dinner at Oxlot 9 that night, and her parents drove us to the airport the next morning,” says JeanPaul, who works as an oil and gas company Project Coordinator, while Amy is a first-grade teacher at Marigny Elementary School.
Five months later, on December 12, 2020, Amy dressed in a high neck lace gown with a trumpet silhouette to walk down the aisle at Saint Scholastica Academy Chapel to meet JeanPaul at the altar. After exchanging vows, the newlyweds joined their 23 guests at the Estate at Charropin Beach for an elegant four course plated reception. Over the course of a celebration that lasted seven hours, the meal was spread out and broken up with dancing and live music played by Michael Watson and the Alchemy, giving everyone time to enjoy the meal—and each other. “The reception was at a perfect pace,” says JeanPaul. “We truly felt like we were able to connect with everyone and enjoy our time together. The whole day was really magical and something we will never forget.”

For the Guidrys, the entire day was the culmination of so many things: the long-held hope of parents that their children would marry one another, a romance that blossomed from friendship, and a days-long pre-wedding family get-together filled with memories. After cutting into a beautiful yet simply decorated two-tier raspberry and lemon cake, the newlyweds were sent off to start their honeymoon in Chattanooga, Tennessee—an ideal setting for two people who so love outdoor adventures. “It was a great mountain getaway, and we did a lot of hiking,” says JeanPaul. Back home in Covington, the Guidrys are looking forward to many more adventures to come, happy that they finally— finally—listened to their parents.

Anyone who knows 11-year-old Nina Johnson The poem was essentially about animals, but it would say she sees the world through a different had a much deeper meaning that focused on the lens than most people. The lens fills Nina’s eyes injustices in our society. with bright and vibrant colors, like a mesmerizing kaleidoscope with all sorts of colors and shapes. “I could see an elevated interest in the poetry With her senses set ablaze, Nina finds her passion contest the second I mentioned it. Nina for art, writing, and theater. At Cedarwood immediately sat down and wrote her poem titled, School, she takes these extracurricular activities ‘Misunderstood Creatures.’ Her poem draws to new heights. parallels to the acceptance of others,” Alicia explains. “Nina is a new student this year and has Alicia Ford, Nina’s writing lab teacher and made her mark academically and socially with Spanish teacher, says the opportunity arose her small class. When I read her poem, I liked in the fall for students to enter the Appelley that she used words like “do not judge”, “be nice to them”, “now you love animals just like me” Publishing Company Poetry Contest. The poem Nina delivered to Alicia’s hands was entitled, and “if you still don’t just let them be”. I think “Misunderstood Creatures.” her poem was simple, however, deep in meaning 68

as it relates to people around her. The parallel I inferred when I read her poem, was perhaps one of being considerate and accepting of others.” “I found out I was going to be a published author,” exclaims Nina as she dives deeper into the details of her poem. When we asked her why she wrote about animals, she said it was because not every animal behaves like you think it would based on how it looks. “Let’s take bunnies for example. Bunnies can be cute, but they can be dangerous or mean. Then, some scary looking animals can be misunderstood and gentler than you think. My poem reflects on
PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW racism and other social injustices our country is facing. It’s all about not misjudging someone based on appearances. I hope this helps open everyone’s eyes to always search for the truth.” ELA Reading and English teacher, Leslie Joyce, says Nina’s academic writing paired with her interesting and informative style of storytelling has led her to the honor of being chosen as a finalist in this esteemed poetry contest. “Nina is a passionate advocate for animals. She is also a compassionate classmate, friend, and sibling. Those qualities have spilled over into her poem about misunderstood animals. Nina values animals and people for the qualities they possess not simply for what they look like or what they can offer her. She wants to do right by all beings: human, animal, big, small, pretty, or ugly. She believes that all creatures have the right to life, justice, and compassion.” Inspiring her teachers, classmates, and four younger siblings, Nina’s forward way of thinking seems beyond her years.
“I didn’t even know she was entering the contest, and she came home with it and I was blown away,” shares Nina’s mom, Lindsay Johnson. “She just has so much compassion and kindness for others. She’s very empathetic and loves to see where the other person is coming from. If someone is mean to her, she will frame it like ‘Maybe they are having a bad day or having trouble in their life.’ It blows me away!” says Lindsay. “She’s pretty crafty as well. From sidewalk chalk to creating plays and performances for her younger siblings, to even pulling things out of a trash can and forming it into a piece of art, she’s very much a creative and out of the box thinker. Turning trash into treasures and animals into a message on equality, this young woman is bound to continue to make a difference in her school, community, and even the world!

IMPACT & GIVE BACK
LOVE &HOPE FOR THE FUTURE BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
S
ome of the most underserved members of the community are those who live as part of the system, the children who wait hopefully to find a place that they can truly call home. These children in foster care need to know that they are not forgotten, that their struggles are on the hearts and minds of the people around them, and that they are loved. It was in hopes of offering that reminder, providing them with the support they need, and giving them a sense of empowerment that Kim Bigler created James Storehouse in 2011, operating from the trunk of her car. Originally begun in California, the organization became known as James Samaritan when it relocated to the North Shore area.
“We provide physical and relationship support from the crib through college for children, foster families, and transitional youth through the creation of partnerships with other organizations,” explains Executive Director Lisa Murphy. “We serve an invisible and underserved population. Those in foster care lack the relationships, support, and stability that many of us take for granted. They feel alone, but James Samaritan assures them that they are not. If there is a need, James Samaritan doesn’t say ‘No.’ Instead, we ask ‘How?’.
76
SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
In doing so, we are able to either direct individuals to the agencies or organizations that meet those needs or reach out to a network of volunteers that we refer to as James Samaritans to fulfill the requests.” The efficacy of the organization comes in their vision and the many ways that they have innovated the process of both offering support and obtaining the funding needed for their work. A mentoring program called OpenTable brings together members of the community to work with youth in transition and provide them with guidance as they reach adulthood and begin to navigate that world. Understanding the need for transportation that is so often a challenge, the Gift-A-Lift Motor Vehicle Program provides donated vehicles to youth in transition who need transportation to continue achieving their goals. Naturally, none of the organization’s work would be possible without the generosity of its donors, and Community Connection—a resource platform that encourages the community to provide for those in need—along with their partnership with Northshore Tech enables James Samaritan to help transitional youth change
“Most people are unaware that children usually come to DCFS with just the clothes on their backs. Consequently, they are given belongings, such as clothes and shoes, in a black garbage bag. Imagine the impact it has on one’s self-worth to have no home and only a garbage bag to carry.”
the trajectory of their lives. “Our work is effectively making a generational change,” says Murphy. “It is hard to count how many thousands of lives James Samaritan has helped through our efforts and our Family Center, but we also know that helping families and foster children impacts more than the individual. Our services impact the whole family, both upstream to the biological and foster parents, to downstream—if or when the foster youth have families of their own. We offer life skills and empower individuals to meet their life goals.” Their incredible work, however, is not without its challenges. “The biggest challenge is the sheer numbers of children and families throughout the five Florida Parishes that we serve,” Murphy asserts. “The system is overwhelmed. We strive to come beside agencies that are overwhelmed or have their hands tied as to what they are able to accomplish due to the scope of their jobs or the availability of resources. Like the case workers and our sister organizations, we want everyone to be helped. By refusing government funding, we are able to be more flexible.” The funding that they do receive comes from non-governmental grants and donations.

IMPACT & GIVE BACK What they do for the community is invaluable—not only to the individuals they work with directly, but to the system itself. “Based on the feedback that we have received from Family Court, DCFS, the Office of Juvenile Justice and others, our relational approach, community involvement, and mission of advocacy is valued,” says Murphy. Plans are also in place to launch The Belonging Campaign, which is designed to bring awareness and attract more donations from corporations. “Most people are unaware that children usually come to DCFS with just the clothes on their backs. Consequently, they are given belongings, such as clothes and shoes, in a black garbage bag. Imagine the impact it has on one’s self-worth to have no home and only a garbage bag to carry.” Unfortunately, COVID has given another challenge to overcome. “The pandemic has increased the occurrence of domestic abuse, substance abuse, and mental health issues across the board,” Murphy notes. “Therefore, it has increased the brokenness of homes.” A solution has come swiftly and effectively, as meetings with social workers and Open Table sessions can be done virtually. Further enabling a sense of connectedness are donated cell phones given to each child. In all that they do, they remain focused on their mission: Changing lives by acting with the heart of a Samaritan.
