Scott’s Wish is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization led by an all-volunteer team dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of both people and pets. Nearly every dollar raised goes directly toward helping critically ill patients and homeless pets, both within the immediate community of St. Tammany Parish and beyond. Named in memory of Scott Lala, the organization has been spreading kindness, assistance, hope, and joy since its inception in 2008.

Scott’s Wish supports patients of all ages managing cancer treatment, organ transplants, birth defects, and ALS. The organization helps close financial gaps by assisting with travel, car repairs, clothing,

supplies, and paying for rent and utility bills for families dealing with challenging health circumstances.

In addition to helping people, Scott’s Wish also supports pet-oriented causes. One of its initiatives, “In Honor of Duco,” pays homage to elite canines who serve critical roles in the U.S. military and require specialized medical care after their service, which the government does not provide for them. The organization also supports openadmission animal shelters around the state by providing lifesaving medical care for injured strays, adoption initiatives, enrichment opportunities, and transport to permanent homes.

Scott’s Wish Mission:

Empowering lives through compassion and support. Our mission is to fulfill the needs of critically ill people and pets by providing financial assistance for treatment and essential needs. We advocate for the well-being of both patients and animals, fostering a community of care and compassion.

Last year’s sold out event welcomed a crowd of about 500 people, raising nearly $325,000 in support of critically ill people, pets, and a brave pack of dogs.

In 2014, John and I launched the first Royal Family Kids Camp in Louisiana, a week-long, specialized camp for children in foster care ages 6-12. This initiative, part of a nationwide effort, marked the beginning of our journey to support these vulnerable children. In July 2023, I took on a new challenge as the Executive Director of James Samaritan, an organization dedicated to connecting the church and community with the needs of children and youth involved in the foster care system.

The mission of James Samaritan is multifaceted, encompassing camps, clubs, mentoring programs, and the provision of tangible resources to foster children and their families. Our goal is to bridge the gap between the community and the needs of these children, offering them the support and encouragement they need to thrive.

My career has always centered around children. In 2002, I opened a daycare facility, where I discovered my love for teaching. Over the years, I managed preschool programs, after-school programs, and tutoring services. I then obtained my teaching certification and spent three years in a public school classroom. Eventually, my passion for serving children led me to start a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting foster children through Royal Family Kids Camp and Teen Reach Adventure Camp. It was through this work that I connected with Kim Bigler, the founder of James Samaritan in 2017. Our missions aligned perfectly, making our collaboration a natural fit.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is witnessing the transformation in children who participate in our programs. As a foster parent, I know firsthand the impact of feeling supported and encouraged. I love showing foster families that we appreciate their sacrifices and witnessing the positive changes in children as they engage in our programs. Since launching Royal Family Kids Camp in 2014, I have seen several former campers return as staff or counselors, eager to give back to the next generation and share the hope they received.

Julie Wondergem MAKING A

DIFFERENCE

THROUGH

FOSTER CARE SUPPORT

However, the role of Executive Director is not without its challenges. One of the biggest obstacles is the lack of awareness and understanding of the foster care system. While our community is generous and active in giving, many people do not fully grasp the challenges that foster children and youth face due to their trauma. The tangible resources we provide are essential, but the relationships and connections we offer are what truly make a difference, breaking the cycle of abuse and creating lasting change.

Despite these challenges, my passion remains strong, fueled by my personal experience as a foster mom. I know how amazing these kids are and how deserving they are of love and attention. My greatest strength as a leader is my firsthand knowledge of the foster care system and my willingness to work alongside my team to achieve our mission. I am dedicated to educating the community and normalizing wraparound support for foster and adoptive families.

Having lived in the Covington area since 2000, I appreciate the familyoriented nature of our community. After a brief stint in Chicago, my husband and I were eager to return to this welcoming environment. Outside of my professional life, I enjoy simple pleasures like gardening, spending time outdoors, traveling, and reading aloud to my children. For the past seven years, I have homeschooled five of our seven children, which has allowed us the freedom to explore and learn together while also giving me the flexibility to lead James Samaritan.

James Samaritan partners with several local nonprofits to serve the foster care community, and I am proud to be a part of this collaborative effort. Together, we are making a significant impact, providing hope and support to foster children and their families in our community.

Dr. Michele COOPER

Inspiration to practice medicine?

At age five, I developed severe asthma. As a result, I spent a considerable amount of time in my pediatrician’s office and the emergency room for treatment. I was inspired by the dedication and compassion of the doctors who treated me, and I knew I wanted to make a difference in people's lives—just like they had done for me.

Can you describe your specialty and what drew you to this particular field?

During high school, while working at my local hospital, I had the opportunity to observe various surgeries in the operating room, including orthopedics, plastic surgery, general surgery, and urology.

I found all these fields fascinating and could have been happy in any surgical specialty. However, I was particularly drawn to the transformative aspect of plastic and reconstructive surgery. That experience marked the beginning of my journey toward plastic surgery, and my passion for the field has only grown since then.

Tell us a little about your practice

I run a solo practice in Mandeville, Louisiana, with the support of my dedicated team of six employees: three nurses, an office manager, receptionist, and a surgery scheduler. My practice is intentionally small, allowing me to provide personalized attention to each patient.

I spend considerable time in consultations with patients, carefully reviewing their concerns, offering tailored recommendations, and discussing the risks of each procedure. After surgery, I personally oversee all postoperative care alongside my amazing nurses. My surgical patients have my personal contact information and can contact me directly for any questions or concerns that may arise. I also offer in-office cosmetic injectables, like Botox and filler, and personally perform all patients’ injections.

At Michele Cooper M.D., every patient can expect the “VIP treatment.”

My team’s commitment to personalized, one-on-one care is why my patients consistently refer their friends and family to me for any cosmetic procedure.

A YEAR WORTH CELEBRATING.

70 years after its founding, St. Tammany Health System has never been busier.

Like the rest of the Northshore, St. Tammany Health System is no stranger to growth. The first expansion of its flagship St. Tammany Parish Hospital took place in 1958 — four years after the hospital opened. It has been in growth mode ever since.

As the health system prepares to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its founding on Dec. 1, few years have been as busy for it as 2024.

“We knew this would be a ‘buckle up’ kind of year from the beginning,” health system President and CEO Joan Coffman said. “But knowing it and experiencing it are two different things and let me tell you: It has been a whirlwind – but the best kind of whirlwind.”

That, she said, is because with each announcement and each ribbon-cutting, the health system is keeping good on its promise to deliver world-class healthcare close to home for Northshore families.

Perhaps the most impactful of its 2024 projects became reality this past spring with the opening of a new purpose-built family medicine clinic in North Covington that, since July, has been home to the region’s first-ever Family Medicine Residency Program, designed to address physician shortages by training the next generation of care providers.

“With one snip of the scissors today, St. Tammany Parish and the rest of the Northshore just got significantly healthier,” Coffman said at the time. “The realization of years of work and planning, this clinic is a sterling embodiment of our commitment to serving the community, as well as a symbol of the power of the partnership between St. Tammany Health System and Ochsner. What a blessing.”

It is also just one of many such blessings.

The health system recently unveiled a gamechanging expansion to its Bone and Joint Clinic in Covington, which includes an on-site rehab gym.

In April the St. Tammany Pediatrics and Express Care Kids clinic – with an integrated afterhours clinic – opened in the heart of Mandeville at 3663 U.S. Hwy 190 (adjacent to Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids and Chick-fil-A®).

Work continues on Highway 1085 (Bootlegger Road), on the new St. Tammany Health System Surgery Center, a $75 million, state-of-theart facility specializing in surgeries that can be completed in fewer than 24 hours. It will open in 2025. (Rendering above.)

A new cafeteria opened in July, at its main campus hospital, part of a continued capital improvement program. A new parking garage is also in the works.

There’s more to come, including a new facility specializing specifically in care for women and children planned for Highway 21 in Covington.

Oh, and there’s a 70th anniversary celebration to be planned.

“I’m really looking forward to that,” Coffman said. “It is going to be a wonderful opportunity to look back at the past 70 years and reflect on the unique bond between St. Tammany Health System and the community that founded it all those years ago, which is always a source of inspiration to me.

“I was about to say that it will also be a welcome chance to take a breath and reflect on the past year’s progress – but as I say that it is occurring to me that 2025 just might be as busy for St. Tammany Health System as 2024 has been. So, I’ll say it again: Buckle up and enjoy the ride.”

With nine kids, the Schroder family could form their own baseball team—though the age spread might make the game a little bit tricky. Comprising five boys and four girls, aged 12, 11, 9, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 21 months—equating to a span of ten and a half years—something that most of us couldn’t even imagine. But as the mother of this tribe, Kristen Schroder couldn’t imagine life without any one of them.

KRISTEN SCHRODER

“I have two in braces, three stay home with me, six are in school, two play baseball, one does ballet, two take tennis lessons and one takes golf lessons,” says Schroder, running down her household by the numbers. “One bird named Lucky, one homemade baseball field in our backyard, one table big enough for everyone to sit around, and two parents who call each one of their children a gift.”

Married to Bryan, the former owner and CEO of a corporate payments company that was sold a few years ago and the current owner of a telecommunications company in Mississippi, Schroder feels blessed to follow her passion: “I’m being a mother, which I believe is the most important spiritual work on earth,” she says.

“I’m always there to listen to them. But more than that, I’m there.”

Schroder also dabbles in social media, where she shares a glimpse of family life as a fun outlet, in addition to having written a children's book called Sunday Morning Chaos told from the baby’s point of view and co-designing a swim line with Hermoza. Naturally, however, the majority of her time is spent focused on keeping the chaos in some semblance of order. “Depends on the day really—but I can tell you that I never sit down,” she admits. “I have three little ones at home, and I try to be present with them until naptime. I have a caretaker come in at least three or four days a week, and once babies go down for a nap, I can do the constant grocery pickup, make my lists, straighten the house, return emails, shoot content. Some days I go to the children's school and help with parties. I also try to work out for an hour, which has been so important in my routine to help me take time for myself. I also take 20 or 30 minutes out of my midday just to pray and just be alone.”

As hectic as her days may be, Schroder believes that being home for her kids is worth the crazy. “I’m always there to listen to them. But more than that, I’m there,” she says. “There is a sense of comfort for them in knowing I’m home, and I feel like I'm being used for a higher purpose.”

A MESSAGE TO THE NORTHSHORE COMMUNITY

Now in our sixty-fourth year of serving our neighbors, family and friends on the Northshore, North Oaks Health System is making bold investments in our team, services, technology and facilities to ensure access to comprehensive and personalized healthcare to help you live your best and healthiest life.

The North Oaks team of healthcare heroes are as dedicated now to delivering the exceptional care our community deserves as we were when we cared for our first patient in 1960. Our dedication underscores our commitment to our mission of improving lives every time, every touch.

All of this is possible because our community believes in the care that we are providing to improve and change lives. Thank you for your loyalty and trust.

Recent renovations of North Oaks Medical Center’s Labor & Delivery unit enhance our already exceptional birth experiences. Schedule a tour at northoaks.org/labordelivery to meet our team and find out why we’ve earned “Louisiana Birth Ready Plus” recognition for quality and safety for the fourth consecutive year.

Training the Northshore’s next generation of physicians is officially underway. This summer, the North Oaks Graduate Medical Education program welcomed physicians to our inaugural internal medicine residency.

Construction of the 95,809-square-foot North Oaks Clinic Building II is on pace. Steel is rising from the foundation of the nearly $50 million project. When complete in May 2025, it will stand five stories and significantly increase space for new providers and services, while ensuring we have room to grow for future needs.

Also in 2025, we look forward to opening the new home of North Oaks Outpatient Rehabilitation Services Center in the former Harley Davidson building. This jewel in the heart of Downtown Hammond will double the space of our current 15,000-square-foot center – already the largest, most comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation program on the Northshore.

LIVES. EVERY TIME. EVERY TOUCH.

What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?

Since the age of 10, I have known that my purpose in life was to become a physician.

What do you find most rewarding about your work as a physician?

Before joining the North Oaks Cardiovascular Institute, I covered several hospitals’ inpatient and urgent surgical needs. This limited my ability to devote ample time to patients with acute and chronic conditions, who could benefit from outpatient and preventive care. I am delighted to have the opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Smith, our Nurse Practitioner, Travis King,

The North Oaks Cardiovascular Institute team is growing to advance heart health care on the Northshore. Physicians include renowned Cardiothoracic and Peripheral Vascular Surgeon Jose Mena, MD, FACS, who is North Oaks Health System’s Physician of the Year. Dr. Mena recently welcomed Cardiothoracic Surgeon William B. Smith, DO, to the team. Dr. Smith is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Their combined expertise aims to provide patients with advanced surgical solutions for heart, lung, chest,

DR. WILLIAM SMITH

What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?

From an early age, I was interested in science, and I knew that I wanted to work in a career where I could help people. As a boy scout, I was introduced to family practice while working to earn a merit badge in medicine. I was sure it was the job I wanted until I encountered the surgical field. I feel incredibly fortunate to practice this specialty of medicine.

What do you find most rewarding about your work as a physician?

and the North Oaks team of cardiologists and pulmonologists in providing an outpatient practice to more effectively serve the community.

What traits or advanced training make you stand out in your field?

I am triple fellowship trained and double board certified in both vascular and cardiothoracic surgery. The trend of being double boarded in both specialties is unique, as most educational institutions now focus their curriculum on either one or the other.

esophageal, arterial and venous conditions. Several cardiovascular and thoracic conditions can be resolved through minimally invasive techniques using catheters and robotics, which have proven particularly beneficial for high-risk heart disease patients and those who have had a heart attack, stroke, aneurysm or blood clot.

Drs. Mena and Smith collaborate with cardiologists, pulmonologists and primary care physicians to improve treatment outcomes for their patients with chronic and acute cardiovascular and thoracic conditions.

I find it satisfying to use my mind and hands to help heal the body. It's truly a rewarding experience when the right decisions and techniques combine to produce positive patient outcomes.

What traits or advanced training make you stand out in your field?

Early in my training, I was involved in robotic lung surgery, an increasingly sought after advancement in medical treatment. My extensive experience in this field of minimally invasive surgery is certainly beneficial for my patients.

IF

YOU ARE INTERESTED IN GETTING INVOLVED:

“We are all limited with advertising dollars, especially with inventory challenges these past two years so I truly appreciate the enthusiasm and integrity of the Social magazine team. Dave works with my hectic schedule and does so much of the work for me. Marketing is not my background so I appreciate their professionalism, input, and expertise. I am happy to work with Social and they make it so easy.”

DR. BROOKE VINTURELLA

What inspired you to pursue a career in dentistry?

As a little girl, I was always interested in science, particularly Biology. My local elementary and high school teachers had an impact on and built upon my interests, always guiding and engaging me. My focus on dentistry was refined when I was 15 and got my braces removed. The alignment and inclination of my teeth were less than ideal, and the confidence I gained from the correction of my smile catapulted my interest in the dental field. From my own personal experience, I knew the effect dental work could have on a young person’s life, and from that moment on, I knew I wanted to spend my life extending the positive effects dentistry can have on people.

What do you find most rewarding about your work as a dentist?

Working with all children is rewarding. But the most fulfilling part of my work (the soft spot for me) is helping an anxious child learn that they are brave enough to face their fears. It’s very important to me to meet each child where they are, quelling their anxiety to the best of my ability, and hopefully proving dentistry and oral health are not only important but can also be enjoyable.

How do you balance the demands of your profession with your personal life?

Showing up for myself by getting outside and moving my body daily is essential for helping me bring the best of myself to my patients and loved ones. Additionally, I take my weekends and vacation time very seriously.

Transforming Lives with Unconditional LOVE & HOPE

Royal Family KIDS Camp (RFKC) is a transformative nonprofit dedicated to changing the lives of children in the foster care system. This organization, part of For The Children Inc., has spent over 35 years training and equipping local churches and nonprofits to operate RFKC chapters across the United States and abroad. The mission of RFKC is clear: to provide children with experiences of unconditional love, hope, and safety.

The camp is a week-long, overnight experience specifically designed for children ages 7-12 in foster care. Each camper is paired with a trained, volunteer counselor whose sole mission is to create positive memories and affirm the child’s inherent

value. The week is packed with special events, such as The Princess Tea Party, Boys’ Adventure Night, the All-Camper Birthday Bash, and the Camp’s Got Talent Variety Show. These activities, alongside swimming, fishing, and crafts, offer these children the opportunity to simply be kids, free from the burdens of their everyday lives.

For many of these children, RFKC is a sanctuary. It provides a rare chance for them to experience joy and to see a brighter future. The power of a birthday cake for a child who has never had a birthday celebrated, or an evening to dress like a princess and be treated like royalty, gives these campers a profound sense of hope.

IMPACT & GIVE BACK

Katie McElveen, who stepped into her role as Mental Health Provider (MHP) for RFKC in May 2019, plays a vital role in this transformative experience. She trains staff to interact with the children therapeutically, ensuring they receive the care and understanding they desperately need. “Most of our staff are everyday people wanting to make a difference in their community,” she says.

Katie’s journey with RFKC began in 2019, bringing with her extensive experience and a deep passion for advocating for children from difficult backgrounds. Her career started in the public school system in 2013 as a school counselor. After five years, she decided to homeschool her children and worked with The Louisiana First Foundation, advocating statewide for children in foster care. Today, she balances homeschooling her three children, directing their homeschool program, and running a ministry that supports other homeschooling moms.

For Katie, working with children from hard places is more than a job—it’s a calling. “No matter how a child ends up in foster care, there is pain in that transition. Working with these kids and giving them hope is the root of why I am involved with RFKC,” she explains. Inspired by the biblical verse James 1:27, Katie’s drive is to serve this vulnerable population and show them the love of Christ.

Despite the rewarding nature of her work, Katie acknowledges the challenges. The hardest part for her is the last day of camp, knowing some children will return to difficult placements. However, her passion remains unwavering. “I’ll always be passionate about giving hope to children from hard places. I’ll never get tired of seeing smiles during birthday parties, talent shows, or breakthroughs in challenging behaviors,” she says.

Katie’s faith plays a crucial role in her work. “The main thing I bring to the table is the Lord. This is hard work. It can be disappointing, challenging, and exhausting. The only good I can bring to the table is hope and love that comes from Jesus alone,” she shares.

A resident of Kentwood, Louisiana, since 2011, Katie loves the community and enjoys a fulfilling life with her husband and three children. In addition to her work with RFKC, she is active in her church, leads worship, and even bakes sourdough bread to sell at the local farmers market.

TEACHERfeature

Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher?

It is difficult to choose one person who influenced my decision to become a teacher because I’ve always loved being around children and as a young girl would teach all the neighborhood kids. If I had to choose one person, I’d say my dad. He went to college to earn his degree in education when I was about nine years old demonstrating the importance of hard work and dedication. My dad took notice in my ability to connect with young children and consistently encouraged me to earn my degree in education.

What is your biggest challenge as a teacher?

Unfortunately, there are many challenges that come with teaching these days, but I’d say the biggest challenge for me is the urgency to push children along so quickly. As a society, we are way too concerned about forcing young children to read, write, and master standards that they are not developmentally ready for. I’m fortunate to work at a place that cherishes young children and supports learning through play and experiences, with a focus on learning to think and problem solve.

What do you feel is the biggest

reward?

The biggest reward is the children! Kids are amazing little humans who are eager to absorb knowledge and demonstrate love. The connection that I make with each of them is something that I would not get with many other careers. I know that the children I work with will go on to have a love of learning due to the environment I created and the connection they had with me. The best is when children whom I’ve taught in the past come back to visit to tell me the impact I’ve had on their lives.

How do you make learning fun for your students?

It is important to make learning fun and engaging for the students. I do this by getting to know each child, what he is interested in, the child’s strengths, areas the child needs to work on, and how he learns best. I then create activities and classroom experiences based on this knowledge providing the students time to explore and problem solve while I ask questions encouraging deeper thinking.

If you could leave your students with one message, what would it be?

If I could leave my students with one message, it would be to always remain curious and keep asking questions and looking for solutions.

Dr. Claire MELANCON

Can you describe your specialty and what drew you to this particular field?

I practice in a very specific niche of cosmetic facial plastic surgery. I love being able to tangibly fix a problem, renew confidence, and see the life-changing impact that has on people’s lives. I was an artist before I did plastic surgery, so I think the artistic, detailed side of facial plastics drew me specifically to this specialty.

Tell us a little about your practice.

I started Audubon Facial Plastic Surgery almost 3 years ago and designed the practice to have a boutique concierge feel. I do nearly 100% cosmetic work, including rhinoplasty, facelift, neck lift, eyelid lifts, etc., as well as nonsurgical treatments like Botox and filler. AFPS is different in that it is designed to be patient-centered—never rushed, accessible staff, small touches, and a real boutique experience. We are launching a second location this month in Mandeville, which I am really excited about.

What do you find most rewarding about your work as a physician?

I love seeing patients’ renewed confidence in their appearance, from a rhinoplasty patient who no longer sees just her nose when she looks in the mirror but instead sees a balanced woman who is full of confidence, to a facelift patient who now looks the age they feel on the inside.

How do you balance the demands of your profession with your personal life?

I am married with twin 2-year-olds, William and Adeline. They are the highlights of my life, and I have designed my practice schedule around getting maximum time with them while still working full-time. We hold our family time sacred, which allows me to give my all at work when I’m at work and the same at home when I am at home.

Now seeing patients at our new Northshore location!

BOILED PEANUTS

RECIPE COURTESY OF JOY MONNERJAHN: @THE_BAYOU_BELLE

I love boiled peanuts. When you see an old man on the side of the road with little zip lock baggies full of boiled peanuts, you know you’ve reached a new level of country folks. They are amazing though. I like to get mine soft and juicy so I can pop one in my mouth, crack the shell with my teeth, suck the juice and then get the nuts out. You're going to love the juice and taste of these, but love even more that we are cooking them in the instant pot so they are faster!

INGREDIENTS:

24 oz bag of raw peanuts

5 cups water

1/2 cup Slap Ya Mama seafood boil spices Potato (if needed)

DIRECTIONS:

Wash peanuts

Place water in the instant pot and add the Slap Ya Mama spice

Add peanuts

We want the water to cover the peanuts, so put some foil balls on top

Place the trivet on top

Weigh down with a potato if needed

Directions:

Seal lid and lock

Put it on the rice setting

Cook for 200 minutes or more if needed for desired softness

MERRITT + PETER

Merritt Parsons Vesich and Peter James Vesich tied the knot on April 13, 2024, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey together. Their love story began with a serendipitous meeting that blossomed into a romance filled with joy, laughter, and meaningful traditions.

Photos by Theresa Elizabeth Photography

Merritt and Peter dated for 1.5 years before getting engaged. Their engagement story is as unique as their bond. In early February 2023, Peter, who was preparing for the Bar exam, suggested celebrating Valentine's Day early. Merritt found it peculiar since they never made a big deal out of the holiday. Nevertheless, she went along with it, excited for a night out at Clancy's, their favorite date spot in their neighborhood.

The evening started at St. Joe's, their beloved neighborhood bar. This place held a special significance as it was meant to be the location of their first date. However, due to limited hours post-COVID, their first date ended up at Monkey Hill instead. When St. Joe's reopened, it became their regular hangout, symbolizing the start of their relationship.

After a couple of drinks, they headed to Clancy's. Merritt, in high heels and full of anticipation, suspected Peter might propose that night. Throughout their meal, Peter seemed unusually nervous, heightening Merritt's suspicions. But as the evening concluded with coffee and the check, she was left slightly disappointed yet content with their wonderful night.

As they walked home, Merritt’s standard poodle, Hugeaux, greeted them. Noticing a peculiar capsule on Hugeaux's bow tie collar, Merritt turned to Peter, only to find him on one knee. He unscrewed the capsule, revealing the ring, and asked her to marry him amidst a whirlwind of sweet words and overwhelming emotions. Peter had arranged for their neighbor to attach the ring to Hugeaux’s collar while they were at dinner, making the proposal a beautifully orchestrated surprise.

The next day, they joyfully shared their news with friends at the Krewe De Vieux parade, making their engagement announcement a communal celebration.

Their wedding ceremony took place at St. Francis of Assisi on State Street, followed by a reception at a private club on St. Charles Avenue. Merritt wore an exquisite Sareh Nouri ivory trumpet gown with a V-neckline, V-back, statement bow, and cathedral-length train, complemented by button detailing. Their wedding colors, French blue and ivory, added a touch of elegance to the event.

One notable moment was the humorous toast Merritt shared with her father before leaving for the church. They toasted with a bottle of Parson's Creek Champagne, saved for years, only to find it had turned to vinegar. Despite the unexpected taste, they laughed it off, adding a memorable twist to their special day.

The reception was filled with lively moments, from the band’s lead singer joining the dance floor for “Proud Mary” to Merritt’s mother’s friend playfully attempting to steal a custom tambourine. These personal touches made their wedding truly unique. Merritt and Peter's collection of blue and white chinoiserie pottery, carefully gathered by Merritt and friends, adorned the venue, adding a personal and elegant touch.

Their cakes, crafted by Zoes Bakery, were a highlight. The wedding cake, a five-tier French blue creation with a sculptural bow, featured alternating layers of strawberry buttercream and chocolate with salted caramel ganache. The groom's cake depicted their dogs, Hugeaux and Jed, enjoying a bowl of ramen, a nod to Peter's favorite dish.

After their wedding, the couple honeymooned in Portugal, exploring beautiful destinations like Porto, the Douro Valley, Cascais, The Algarve, and Lisbon.

Now residing in Uptown New Orleans, Merritt and Peter continue to cherish the love and traditions that brought them together. Their wedding was a true reflection of their shared journey, filled with personal touches, laughter, and an abundance of love.

St. Tammany Health System Earns 17th Consecutive ‘A’ Grade for Patient Safety

[COVINGTON, LA] — For the 17th consecutive grading period, St. Tammany Health System’s flagship St. Tammany Parish Hospital has earned an “A” grade for patient safety for spring 2024 from the Leapfrog Group, an independent healthcare watchdog organization.

No other Louisiana health system has received as many consecutive A’s.

“Everyone who works at St. Tammany Health System should be proud of this ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It takes complete dedication at every level, and an ironclad commitment to putting patients first. I thank St. Tammany Health System, its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for caring so deeply for its patients and their safety.”

Introduced in 2012, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades assign letter grades of A, B, C, D and F twice a year to hospitals across the country. Those grades are based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms.

Developed under the guidance of a national panel of experts, the Leapfrog letter grade program uses up to 22 evidence-based measures of patient safety to assign grades to more than 3,000 U.S. acute-care hospitals.

The Leapfrog grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.

To see more details on St. Tammany Health System’s Leapfrog performance, and to access consumer-friendly tips for patients, visit hospitalsafetygrade.org.

Healthier Northshore Launches Collaborative Community Needs Assessment

[NORTHSHORE, LA] — Healthier Northshore, an initiative dedicated to bringing people, organizations, and resources together to amplify healthier living throughout St. Tammany and Washington Parishes, is approaching the triennial Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) from a fresh, collaborative lens.

“For this iteration of the Community Health Needs Assessment, Healthier Northshore engaged our hospital and health system stakeholders, in a unified effort to produce a regional picture of the health of our community to inform our strategy moving forward,” said Joan Coffman, president and CEO of St. Tammany Health System. “This broader picture — painted by the data we take in from across our two-parish region, will help us to make an even bigger impact in the work we do.”

Senator Bill Cassidy was on hand to help announce the joint Healthier Northshore CHNA with community stakeholders and offered his support of the effort.

“We want every family in Louisiana to have opportunity for themselves and for their children and grandchildren. Healthier Northshore is taking a total view of how to achieve this. It’s my privilege to partner with many of their members along this pathway,” Senator Cassidy said.

Every three years, hospitals and health systems throughout the country are required by the IRS to complete a CHNA. This systematic process evaluates the health needs and priorities of communities, through the data gathered during the assessment period to identify gaps, develop strategies and allocate resources to improve community health.

The Louisiana Public Health Institute and United Way of Southeast Louisiana have been engaged to help facilitate and develop the Healthier Northshore Community Health Needs Assessment.

This joint Healthier Northshore CHNA will serve to guide the efforts of the initiative and the following health systems/hospitals in St. Tammany and Washington Parishes. St. Tammany Health System, Ochsner Health, Slidell Memorial, Riverside Medical Center Lakeview Hospital and Northshore Rehabilitation Hospital.

About Healthier Northshore

The Healthier Northshore initiative is dedicated to bringing people, organizations, and resources together to amplify healthier living throughout the St. Tammany and Washington Parishes.
