What Our Patients Say “Dr. Koga was incredible. Knowledgeable, sensitive, informative… I immediately felt at ease and felt confident in my receiving expert medical care. It’s rare to find a doctor that combines such personal touches and care for a patient as a person with outstanding quality of medical care. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a specialist.”
“I was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm and Dr Koga was my neurosurgeon. He explained where the aneurysm was and the options I had. He explained both options thoroughly and answered the questions that I had and the questions of my family. He did not rush but took his time with us. He did the surgery and I have had a miraculous recovery. Back at work & doing great! Would recommend Dr Koga highly!”
- Tatiana M.
- Peggy G.
Our Philosophy I believe medicine is both art and science. I offer my patients the very latest technologies, but I refuse to allow the industrialization of healthcare. Neurological diseases are very daunting and are often accompanied by psychological and family stress. The best results emerge when the surgeon and the patient are in a true partnership. We give each patient careful explanations of the anatomy and the surgical approach in each case. Beyond technical excellence in the operating room, we strive to offer each patient a caring environment, with ample education and supportive postoperative care. We do the right thing for every patient every time. We care about the individual. We answer the telephone.

COMMUNITY Leader
MAKING his MARK
By Liesel Schmidt
A
s the mayor of Covington since 2019, Mark Johnson has seen the city through some of the most difficult times in recent history. Political unrest, economic crises, hurricanes, a catastrophic pipeline cyber attack, and a worldwide pandemic have all befallen the nation, impacting the cities at a cellular level that would challenge even the strongest leadership. Through it all, Johnson continued to focus on his mission of guiding the city he serves with strength, integrity, and courage. Beginning in his 20s, Johnson became deeply involved in community organizations throughout St. Tammany Parish, dedicating himself to serving in ways that he felt would make a difference. First with serving as the president of the Northlake Mandeville Rotary Club and serving on the St. Tammany Parish Drainage District #3 as he oversaw the Bayou Chinchuba drainage basin, Johnson involved himself with as many local concerns as he could. He also served on the early boards of the Tammany Tigers as their treasurer as well as the St. Tammany Parish Library Board of Control for several years, 12

three of which were spent as chairperson. Additionally—and perhaps most notably—he was a founding board member of Leadership St. Tammany and served as the chairperson for five years and as a program director since 2002. Through Leadership St. Tammany, Johnson immerses both existing and emerging community leaders in situations that teach them how best to lead and make needed changes. He teaches all aspects of commerce, education, and government within St. Tammany Parish and its municipalities and has helped ready over 600 leaders to go out and serve their communities. Clearly, Johnson has a deep and abiding love of his parish and its people. He is passionate about the history, as well, and served as the president of the Covington Heritage Foundation, protecting and preserving the past. All the while, he is working to make the present community a stronger, safer place that is thriving—both now, and in the future. “I've always enjoyed being active in the community; and now that I’m retired, I cannot think of a better way to
spend my retirement,” says Johnson, whose professional career included time as a successful builder, pharmacist, and co-owner of a home health services company that he founded with his brother-in-law. “I am not interested in politics. I am interested in helping take care of my hometown. That said, the only office I ever ran for was mayor, and I won.” The reason for his win was, in Johnson’s estimation, two-fold. “I'm a businessman and a storyteller, not a politician,” he says simply. “People appreciate that about me, and they know that what they see is what they get. I know what’s important to them, and I work hard to get it done.” His goals while in office include facilitating the success of local businesses; improving drainage, traffic, sewerage collection, and wastewater treatment; and providing cultural events that “keep Covington one of the coolest cities in America.” So far, his greatest achievements have been rebuilding portions of the sewer collection system, upgrading the sewer plant, and doubling the number of police officers and having them engaged in the community. “I think my proudest accomplishment as mayor has been rebuilding the police department and seeing the difference those officers are making in our community today,” says Johnson.
"
GES A L L A E FOR R A C D EYE E C N A DVA
Humility is a strong suit of Johnson’s; and throughout the many challenges that have arisen during his time in office—namely the pandemic, the cyber attack, and recovery from Hurricane Ida—he credits his ability to help his city to the people around him. “I am surrounded by so many wonderful, dedicated, and talented people,” he says. “Sometimes it's best to give them the tools, the resources, and the latitude to let them do what they do.”
I am not interested in politics. I am interested in helping take care of my hometown.

The Life of Ben BY LIESEL SCHMIDT To know Ben Blanchard, you’d have to know that he was larger than life, the life of the party, and someone who lived his life without limits. His personality was one that attracted people to him, forging deep relationships with people that lasted far longer than most. He was passionate: passionate about the people in his life, passionate about his community, passionate about helping others. After he died in 2016 following a two-year battle with cancer, all of that passion was left for his loved ones to carry the torch, establishing a foundation in his name that helped the people of New Orleans with their struggles in education—something that Ben believed was a crucial part of elevating the city and giving its community the opportunities they needed to thrive. Following Ben’s death in January of 2016, a group of his closest friends decided they would come in from out of town and get together once a year to party, laugh, cry and tell their stories about Ben. The idea for the annual reunion turned into a fundraiser to support Ben’s favorite causes, the “Jenkins Jam”—Ben’s nickname at LSU. This was also the beginning of The Ben Blanchard Memorial Foundation and the Ben Blanchard Academic and 22
SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
Leadership Promotion Award for eighth graders at Success Prep, where Ben was a founding board member and served on the board until his death. Later, the foundation established a program called Ben’s Scholars, which works alongside kids with aptitude to develop greater skills. The annual fundraisers that the Ben Blanchard Memorial Foundation have held have been extremely successful in raising money and bringing Ben’s friends & family together for a fun time to celebrate Ben’s life and raise money for causes which they consider “Ben Worthy”—all things that Ben was passionate about. “Our primary focus was on an inner-city New Orleans charter school named Success Prep at Thurgood Marshall,” says Ben’s father, Mark, who is deeply involved with the foundation, alongside his wife, Susan. “Ben believed that one way to make a difference in New Orleans was through education. The foundation initiated and sponsored a band program, providing funding for music instruction as well as providing uniforms and instruments for the entire program. Additionally, Susan initiated Ben Scholars, which chose students to help in mentoring and providing experiential learning. Susan would spend four to five days per month personally mentoring students at Success Prep.”
The foundation also gives out an annual award for the most outstanding Ben Scholar, providing a laptop computer and a savings bond to be used for future college costs. Additionally, an initial grant of $100,000 was given to Mary Bird to be used towards providing services needed by cancer patients on the NorthShore. “Services have included nutritional supplements, transportation to infusion or radiation therapy, or just about anything that Mary Bird considers ‘Ben Worthy,’” Mark says. “We also recently gave Mary Bird an additional $665,000 to fund an endowment which
“He lived by the motto ‘Never retreat. Never surrender.’ That’s the work that we’re doing.”
will provide for these services in perpetuity, and we sponsor the Livewell NorthShore event, which provides for free cancer screenings annually on the NorthShore.” The importance of the foundation’s work—not only in education, but in working with cancer patients—is felt by Ben’s family. “We realized that many people in our community struggle with providing for their basic needs while undergoing treatment,” says Mark. “Ben understood that he was blessed to be able to receive the treatments that he needed but, he wanted to be able to help those who are not as blessed and fortunate.” In addition to so many initiatives by the foundation, an imposing ocean-going vessel owned by Ben’s former employer, Van Weelde Chartering, was named to honor him. Called Benjamin Confidence, aka “The Ben,” the vessel is an incredible way to keep his memory alive. But more than this, Ben’s family and friends are keeping his spirit, his passions, and his amazing love for the community in which he lived through each and every person they touch through the foundation’s work. “Being able to benefit so many people and keeping Ben’s memory
and legacy alive by having fun events that brings our friends and Ben’s friends together to celebrate his life makes us so proud,” says Mark. “He lived by the motto ‘Never retreat. Never surrender.’ That’s the work that we’re doing.”

f you’re anything like 99 percent of the television-viewing population, you’ve watched something and invested yourself in seeing it, setting time out of your day or week to catch the latest plotline unfolding. You get to know the characters and either love or hate them—hell, sometimes both—and you find yourself wondering what they’re like in real life.
For The Vampire Diaries actors Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, playing the Salvatore brothers onscreen translated to a brotherhood offscreen, ultimately giving rise to something that shares one of their great loves with the rest of the world: they created their very own bourbon. Named Brother’s Bond, the bourbon is the embodiment of their relationship, their friendship—their deep, brotherlike bond—in a bottle.
And, of course, it helped that both men shared a passion for bourbon. During their years of filming Diaries, in fact, Somerhalder and Wesley drank “bourbon” on the show. During their downtime, they imbibed the real thing together. “The boys bonded over bourbon onscreen, and Paul and I bonded over bourbon offscreen,” says Somerhalder in an interview with The Whiskey Wash. “Paul likes to remind me it was the only way he could tolerate me.” Regardless of the late hour, the two would make their way to their favorite bar, unwinding over bourbon and cementing the bond that would last beyond the last credits of the show. “The name Brother’s Bond is very organic—it has the dual meaning of our bond onscreen and our bond offscreen,” explains Wesley. A Louisiana native, Somerhalder’s appreciation for bourbon comes naturally. “I remember the whole family drinking mint juleps on the porch on summer days, weekends, family outings, after church—truly stereotypical awesome Southeast Louisiana,” he says. Wesley’s experience with bourbon came later, during the ten years he spent in the South while the show filmed. The more he learned about the processes of making it and its deeply-rooted history, and the more he tasted, the more he developed a taste for the spirit. As friends often do, they talked about going into business together—but not just any business. The bourbon business. However, they wanted more than to be simply the celebrity faces behind a corporate label. They wanted to be involved in every process, from development to distillation and bottling. They wanted to start something from scratch and be its creators.
Naturally, all of it took years to culminate into their vision, requiring countless hours blending different distillates from Indiana’s MGP, tasting them, and blending some more. They would not be satisfied with anything less than perfection. “Paul and I sat for over a year, literally over a year, blending bourbons in my living room,” Somerhalder says. “We were chasing this flavor profile. Not to sound all kumbaya about it, but we were after a complex, beautiful expression of grains in harmony.”
“Paul and I sat for over a year, literally over a year, blending bourbons in my living room.”

The result? Brother’s Bond’s release is an 80-proof bourbon from a four-grain mash bill, aged four years. “We have an eight-year that we’re going to do,” says Somerhalder. “We’re ecstatic about the line extensions that we can choose, the different age expressions. Eventually we’ll have our hundred-proof and barrel proof. We are hell-bent on making sure that we are only delivering uncompromised quality.”
They were hands-on the whole way, experimenting and taking notes, comparing different variations and tasting to see how different barrels and different agings affected the flavor and complexity of the bourbon. Both men gained a greater appreciation for the pure simplicity of bourbon—good bourbon—and how that simplicity could also birth such a complexity of flavors. While creating their four-grain bourbon, they found balance and nuance that makes their recipe not only unique, but also a secret they hold close to the vest. Bottling is, of course, also a big part of production, as the bottle is someone’s first introduction. It’s all about presentation, so Somerhalder and Wesley spent a great deal of time perfecting every detail, from the texture of the recycled paper to the ink and the print and fonts for the bottle label. They obsessed over all of it, never wavering on their dedication to achieving nothing but the best. Adding another layer to the company, a portion of the bourbon sales will be donated to regenerative farming efforts—something that both men believe is incredibly important as a way to help stabilize Earth’s climate, restore the ecosystem, and provide healthier food supplies. Both advocates of various initiatives, Somerhalder and Wesley recognize that, as a company that relies deeply on agriculture, they have a responsibility to give back. As hard as the work has been and as long as the road has taken to travel, Somerhalder and Wesley are fulfilling a dream, creating something of their very own and working together to achieve something that they believe will last for generations. It’s a legacy to pass down—and a bond that goes as deep as blood.

BELLE MAISON
This is Home BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
At nearly 40 years old, the Schaumburg home in Covington has some stories to tell, some history that has seeped into its bones and settled in, a patina that covers it the way copper turns an amazing shade of teal as it ages. But the bright white exterior of the three-story colonial belies its age, so well has it been updated and maintained, so intentionally has it been tended to. With manicured lawns on a property that is plentiful with azaleas, camelias, and mature oaks, this home is a true Louisiana gem, hidden from the street and tucked away like a treasure. or owners Justin and Erin Schaumburg, the house was meant to be, found not so much by serendipity but by divine intervention. “I believe in God more than I believe in anything in the whole world, and I knew He spoke to my heart when I saw this home, and I heard Him tell me, ‘This is where you’re going to raise your kids,’” says Erin, owner of Eros Home Clothing and Outdoor Furniture, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
At the time, Erin was pregnant with their fifth child—a boy, like all their others—and had just renovated and sold their previous home. The house sold in 24 hours, leaving them casting about for a new place to live. “I’d actually put in a full price offer on a house because I was pretty much desperate. I was about to give birth, and they’d given us 30 days to move out. So I put in a full-price offer on a house in the front of the neighborhood, and they accepted it,” Erin recalls. “I really hadn’t looked at this house, because it was too big; and my husband and I both felt like it was too much house for us. So the next day, the people whose house we’d made the offer on called to cancel on us and told us they’d decided they didn’t want to sell. We had nowhere to live, so I decided to come look at this house. I walked in, and I was by myself with the Realtor. I didn’t even make it to the kitchen before I started to cry. I knew. I just knew. It was the most breathtaking, cozy, authentically Louisiana home. Wainscoting on every wall, cypress-clad rooms, brick floors, a real stone masonry fireplace. I felt like I was in a charming hotel. I told the Realtor not to tell my husband how much I loved it, because I wanted him to love it as much as I did. The last thing I wanted to do was to buy a house that he didn’t like. When he finally came to see it, he walked into the kitchen and the keeping room, and he said, ‘I think this is it.’ We both fell in love with it and bought the house the next day.”

Built by Piazza Architects, the home has had four owners previous to the Schaumburgs, keeping its original detailing and fantastic millwork along the way. The result of Erin’s expertise in interior design is, of course, the thing that makes their home elegant yet cozy, despite the notable square footage—something that people notice immediately. “People notice the warmth when they walk in,” says Erin. “They never want to leave; they love how cozy it is. They also notice the number of details— especially the woodwork. There are almost no sheetrock walls in this house, most of the rooms have wainscoting from top to bottom.”

Along with the wainscoting, the hart pine floors are a detail that adds warmth in an otherwise neutrally toned house. The kitchen and keeping room are another point of interest, boasting brick flooring and natural pine cabinets crowned with Crema Marfil marble countertops from Spain. Perfect for making meals for the large family, the stainless appliances include a Subzero refrigerator, a six burner Viking range, and double oven. As an interior designer, Erin sees many new houses that make her envious—if only for a moment. “I go into a lot of new homes, and every time I do, I think, ‘I want a new house, this is so amazing.’ And then I come home to my house,” she says.

Hard-pressed to name a favorite, Erin loves each room of her home for different reasons. “Every room is a treat, and each room I walk into is prettier than the last,” she says. “I love the keeping room because it’s where we gather, eat, spend the most time celebrating life. I adore the formal living room because it has a masonry fireplace. It’s so beautiful you just want to go and sit in there and relax. But all of the rooms are special.”

With five boys, the house is normally cluttered with signs of life. Toys and sports equipment are a natural part of the scenery, though Erin’s taste is redolent throughout the home—and all the men in her life, both big and little, love it. “For a family with six guys and one girl, they don’t mind. I feel like I’m out numbered, so I get a pink room,” she says of the formal living room. “I get my pink and my flowers, and they actually love it! When I showed them the wallpaper I was considering for my bathroom, it was kid approved. My nine-year old said, ‘That wallpaper makes me happy.’”
It is details such as these that are the hallmark of the Schaumburg home, balancing style with liveability, ease, and comfort. Comprising five bedrooms, three full baths, and two half baths along with the living spaces, the home boasts grand square footage in a way that is still unassuming. It is all lived in, all loved in. It’s home.

PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW
STORY BY KAYLA BERTUCCI he scene was this: A New Orleans news
Tset with 3 boxy cameras surrounding one
live music stage. Amanda Shaw stood underneath the spotlight, fiddle and bow in hand. She wore a smile that beamed brighter than the studio lights, a warm feeling juxtaposed to the cold wind that raged outside.
Her talent went beyond playing the fiddle and belting her beloved songs, coaxing smiles onto the viewer’s faces all too easy, like it was secondhand nature for her to turn everyone’s mood into a jolly one. Amanda was performing her live Bayou Relief concert which she took on the road following Hurricane Ida to help those in the bayou areas. “I really wanted to do something to give back to our community,” explains Amanda. “So many people 70

were fighting to keep things together through the pandemic while facing other personal challenges, and then, along comes a catastrophic storm.” The Bayou Relief Tour is a free event series designed to support undeserved communities with valuable resources needed to rebuild and recover in the aftermath of Ida while also offering a taste of Louisiana culture with live music, complimentary food and much more. The event series also offers locals access to industry professionals, such ATA Loss Consulting, to share key tools needed to rebuild stronger. “In addition to storm recovery resources, we are also partnering with Children’s Hospital New Orleans,” she says, “to arm young people with effective strategies and coping skills to manage behavioral health challenges related to navigating a pandemic and recovering from a storm.” Amanda is a Louisiana girl through and through. Growing up on the Northshore before moving to New Orleans in recent years, she enjoys spreading
the love to all areas of the local community and throughout the state. “Many years ago, when I was four years old, I started taking violin lessons at the community music school at Southeastern Louisiana University,” Amanda says. “I had a wonderful teacher named Dr. Voldmann who gave me a great classical music foundation to build my craft. Growing up in Louisiana, I was surrounded with many different types of music, including Cajun, and I instantly became captivated with its rich, authentic sound.”
PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW Amanda’s family played a big part in her musical success, as they made sure to immerse her in local traditions like eating at the type of restaurants that serve alligator bites as an appetizer and play traditional music that stands true to Louisiana’s culture.
Preschool through 7th grade
“My mom would take me to restaurants like Mulates and Michauls on the weekends to see the Cajun bands play, and a couple of the fiddlers started giving me lessons before the shows,” she explains. “They would show me how to play a song or two and I decided that I wanted start my own band. Soon after that, I started playing at festivals all around Louisiana! In addition to playing music, I am a songwriter, producer, voiceover actress, television show host and small business owner! I love being able to be creative in so many different ways.” The live stream captured Amanda, her bubbly personality and transitional one-liners between songs. But there was a little something extra from her during this particular performance. It was a certain look, a moment Amanda had while playing her fiddle. Her foot kept time tapping on the tile floor and she squeezed her eyes shut. There was concentration on her face, a focus, a burning passion that radiated from her body. This was her forte and a talent that’s hard to describe in words but overwhelming to experience live, and she was doing it all as homage to Louisiana’s people following Hurricane Ida. “In Louisiana, we’re known for our unique culture, rich traditions and the resilient people that truly make our communities special. I sincerely love how genuine the people from Louisiana are – like we’re all a part of a very large family,” Amanda shares. “I am so grateful to have had an amazing career for more than twenty years and I’ve spent much of that time traveling all over the world and playing amazing shows. I am so grateful for those experiences and for the special people of this great state. I truly believe that you must continue to water the soil that you eat from, so it is part of my mission to always keep the people of Louisiana in mind, no matter where my career takes me.”
Where children experience the joy of learning.
A career that’s signed and sealed as a love letter to her home state is the only type of career Amanda says she could ever dream of having.

“Jimmy was out with his friends for his birthday, and I was out at the same place with a friend,” says Ashley, recalling the day in 2017 when they first laid eyes on one another. “He asked his friend about me, and I woke up the next morning to a message from him. He literally slid into my DMs!”

Ms became more than just casual conversation, and the two began dating. Over the course of the next three and a half years, Ashley and Jimmy fell deeper in love—and then it became official. “Our first date was at a rooftop bar in New Orleans, so Jimmy wanted to propose there; but due to COVID restrictions, he postponed the proposal,” says Ashley, recalling the events that led to the day her life changed forever. “He made several attempts over the next few months, but COVID was still a factor—he actually had the ring for eight months! He wanted it to be perfect and for our closest friends and family to be a part of this special moment, so fast forward to June 20, 2020, when it was finally a success! He had two of my girlfriends start a group message and pretend that we were all going out to eat dinner together. When Jimmy and I arrived at the Lakehouse, I saw a collage of pictures and a rose on a table in the courtyard. All I remember hearing was ‘Hey, baby;’ and as I turned around, I couldn’t hear anything else because I was in such disbelief that the man I had been waiting to marry finally asked! All of our family and friends were on the balcony, and they all came out crying and cheering for us. It was a day I’ll never forget! Especially for the fact that he flew my best friend in from Texas to celebrate with us.”

Just over a year later, on October 23, 2021, there was more celebrating as friends and family gathered at the Greystone in Mandeville to watch Ashley and Jimmy wed. Wearing a classic gown with long sleeves, a low back, sheer lace panels at the side, and lace embellishments, Ashley walked down the aisle to meet her beloved at the altar. After being pronounced man and wife, the newly married Theriots joined their guests for an onsite reception and a buffet dinner of delicious food that included a carving station, ahi tuna, crab bisque, chicken and sausage gumbo, shrimp and grits, bacon wrapped shrimp, a potato bar, a salad station, a pasta station, pork sliders, and crab cakes. Sweetening up the night, the couple cut into an all-white four-tier cake adorned with a cascade of lilies and roses, with layers of butter cream, lemon, white chocolate, and cream cheese. “We had so much food!” laughs Ashley, who works as a marketing director, while Jimmy works as a project manager. 78

It’s one of our favorite memories of the night, just the two of us getting to spend the last couple of minutes together on the best night of our lives!” After honeymooning at Excellence Oyster Bay in Jamaica, the Theriots are home in Mandeville, happily sliding into each other’s DMs on the regular.

With all the logistics, chemistry, and math that goes into running a household, sometimes it seems as though it literally takes a degree in engineering to be a mother. Luckily for Carly Moss, she actually holds a bachelor’s in chemical engineering. As a Regulatory Engineer at Chevron, Moss supports and advises offshore Gulf of Mexico oil and gas exploration and production operations on the regulatory requirements required by the U.S. government for operating in the Gulf of Mexico. “Chevron is the second largest oil company in the U.S., and we are involved in all aspects of the oil and gas industries including hydrocarbon exploration and production; refining, marketing and transport; chemicals manufacturing and sales; and power generation,” Moss explains.

Still, Moss balances her job with motherhood, understanding the importance of both aspects of her life and the way they both enrich her. “Being a working mom has many challenges, but it’s so rewarding,” says Moss, who has been married to her high school sweetheart for 11 years and has three children aged nine, eight, and four. “I often find myself multitasking between my job and the responsibility of being a mom. Being a working mom means getting up early to fix breakfast and lunches, then quickly switching to working mode where I evaluate and prioritize my work tasks and meetings. At lunch, I prepare for study time with the kids based on their homework and test schedules. Then I finish off the workday at five p.m., and then mom mode starts. We do homework and studying and then typically head to some sport practice. After practice, we come home, eat supper, do baths, spend a little family time together, then off to bed to start all over again the next day.”
As busy as it keeps her schedule, Moss sees the value in what she’s doing and the example she’s setting for her three children. “I believe being a working mom shows my kids that when they work hard, they truly can have the best of all worlds,” she says. “I am able to have a satisfying career in which I get to be part of a company working to provide reliable, affordable, and ever-cleaner energy to make life better. I get to do this meaningful work all while having the ultimate job of being a mom and providing for my family. I believe this is enriching for my children in that they see me working hard and being dedicated to both areas of my life.”

In her work, Moss has learned a valuable lesson that carries over into other aspects of life: “It’s important to be confident. And when you don't know something or have an answer, it’s okay to say, ‘I don't know, but I will find out for you.’” Likewise, she has learned an incredible amount from her children that no degree could ever teach. “They’ve taught me so much; but most importantly, they have taught me how to enjoy life and to live in the moment,” she says. In being a working mother, Moss is capably handling a great deal of responsibilities; and she takes pride in what she’s doing. “Working a full-time job is hard, and so is being a parent,” she says. “I am proud of giving both my best. I've realized that nothing will be perfect, and I won't ever be able to give 100 percent to both at once. Accepting this has given me peace. I enjoy having a very accomplished day at work, solving problems, the same way that I am filled with joy watching my kids play sports. I try to be as present as possible at whatever it is I'm doing; and my attention to work and parenthood alternates all the time, but neither has suffered. What's that saying....’I know I can do anything, but I can't do everything, and that's okay.’” As her children get older, Moss most wants them to remember that she was present for them. “At school for the little things, at sporting events, after school to help them study, on family night...I just want them to always remember that I was there for them,” she says. Togetherness is important to her, as is the faith she’s instilling in her little ones. “Every morning before school, we say prayers asking God to guide and protect us and watch over our family, and then we do daily affirmations,” she says. “If I ever forget, they always remind me they want to say prayers and do our daily affirmations.”
