IMPACT & GIVE BACK
The heart. It’s the universal symbol associated with love and one of the most iconic images used for Valentine’s Day. But far more importantly, the heart is the very source of life, the organ that works so tirelessly in keeping the body functioning, the one that so often gets overlooked until something goes terribly wrong. But all too frequently, even the signs that should put us on high alert are misunderstood or dismissed, excused as a minor issue or “just a little bit of stress” as we go about our daily lives in hopes that if we don’t see it, it’s not there. For the American Heart Association, making the warning signs known—and heeded—is an integral part of the mission, but so is the life-saving research that brings about advancement in prevention, treatment, and cures.
The Heart of the Matter
BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
Formed in 1924 by a few pioneering physicians and social workers who knew that heart disease did not have to mean the end of living, the AHA has been making breakthroughs for nearly 100 years—breakthroughs that have changed the world. As important as the national organization is, local chapters like those operated in New Orleans and Baton Rouge do the groundwork, reaching people in the community through local initiatives. “Imagine a community where healthy choices are equitable and accessible, where your zip code does not determine your health,” says Brittany Levy Gay, Executive Director of the Greater New Orleans chapter. “Across Greater New Orleans, we are fighting for longer lives by making the places where we live, learn, work, play, pray and heal as healthy as they can be. Healthy food access and affordability, complete streets that include safe places to be active, and nutrition security are some of our greatest needs here in and around New Orleans. Together, with our Board of Directors and community partners, we are addressing social determinants of health to improve lives in our community.”
With a mission to be “a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives,” the AHA and its chapters around the nation are fighting for the lives of people all over the country, both now and in the future. “Locally, through the help of our sponsors and volunteers throughout the Northshore and Greater New Orleans region, we’re able to provide lifesaving resources and information to approximately 600,000 people each year, if not more,” says Gay. IMPACT & GIVE BACK
Funded through donations, the AHA faces the challenges that come with being a non-profit. But more than this, they face the challenges of disparity—something that they fight long and hard against. “Every person deserves the opportunity for a full, healthy life,” Gay contends. “As champions for health equity, by 2024, the AHA will advance cardiovascular health for all, including identifying and removing barriers to health care access and quality. Addressing the drivers of health disparities, including the social determinants of health and structural racism, is the only way to truly achieve equitable health and well-being for all.” COVID and its effects have also been a challenge. “The pandemic has actually inspired our February Heart Month campaign,” says Gay. “More than 18 months in, Americans feel overwhelmed and stressed, which negatively impacts cardiovascular health. Heart disease deaths rose significantly in the past year. Cardiovascular diseases remain the greatest health threat to Americans, but the pressures of COVID-19 remain top of mind. People are suffering from lower physical health and mental well-being, as well as uncontrolled high blood pressure. Stress from the fallout of the pandemic is amplifying these conditions because poor mental well-being that, if neglected, can lead to serious health complications like heart disease. Today, one in three Americans report being worried, and more than half of U.S. adults say that COVID-19 has negatively impacted their mental wellbeing due to worry and stress.” Over the past century, the AHA has maintained its singular focus, never wavering from is mission. “Rigorous, dependable research has always been at the heart of our efforts,” says Gay. “We’ve long supported scientific research in our fight against heart disease and stroke, and we’re making a difference. The research we’ve funded through the generosity of our donors is helping more and more people 18

survive heart disease and stroke. Our core research programs have launched or furthered the work of many of this country’s brightest researchers. The many AHA-funded discoveries include the first implantable pacemakers, the first artificial heart valve, CPR techniques and cholesterol-lowering medications. We’ve also built one of the largest and most trusted research programs in the nation, funding more than $4.8 billion in heart disease and stroke research over the years.” This February, the AHA’s campaign for American Heart Month is called Reclaim Your Rhythm. “We want people to live longer, healthier, fuller lives,” says Gay. “Because losing even one mom, brother, friend, neighbor to cardiovascular disease is too many. Our local sponsors, volunteers and supporters will help rally the Northshore and Greater New Orleans with an urgent message to support each other in improving our physical health and mental well-being. Together, we will be right here to guide our community and help keep our rhythm flowing, with all the tools and tunes to keep us all on track. With the AHA’s mission as our north star, we’ll get Greater New Orleans moving, grooving, wearing red and taking actions that improve physical and mental well-being.”

Co-chaired by Lauren Andrews and Maura Donahue, the 2022 Northshore Go Red for Women event will be held September 23, 2022, at Tchefuncta Country Club. Go Red for Women is a worldwide initiative of the American Heart Association designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women locally, nationally, and globally. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S., claiming more lives each year than all forms of cancer combined. Cardiovascular disease continues to be a woman’s greatest health threat, taking the life of one in every three women.

The Children’s Museum of St. Tammany hosted their Sugarplum Celebration. Children and adults were welcomed into the museum and issued golden tickets to allow them access to all the treats and crafts planed for them to do that day. Children laughed and smiled at the wonders of the museum, while the parents were just as much a child that day, as well. ALL HEART Dr. Nidal Abi Rafeh By Liesel Schmidt
B
eing a physician is one of the most difficult professions in the world, requiring so many characteristics, not the least among them dedication, determination, empathy, and clear-headedness. It takes years of sacrifice and long hours to make it through internship and residency, and so many hopefuls realize that they simply don’t have what it takes. For those who do, it is passion that drives them through the challenges and the frustrations, the cases that seem to have no solution, the patients that pull at their hearts, and the endless periods of high tension. It is passion that keeps them going strong, and passion that makes them the greatest advocates for their patients.
For Dr. Nidal Abi Rafeh, passion is what has driven him to the top of his field as a cardiologist, making him world renown for his expertise in the performance of complex and high-risk Chronic Total Occlusion Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (CTO PCI), a minimally invasive technique that is used to treat patients with complete blockages of the coronary arteries caused by plaque buildup that compromises blood flow to the heart. A native of Lebanon, Abi Rafeh’s story is an international one that proves determination to see his dreams through to fruition. “I put in a lot of hard work and made a lot of sacrifices to achieve my goals,” he says. “I spent countless hours on research after class, training and work so I could provide people care and treatments that can change their lives.”
In practice since 2012, Abi Rafeh’s skill in the field of cardiology has become an asset to the team at North Oaks Cardiology Clinic. His path has included the Lebanese Hospital Geitaoui-University Medical Center in Beirut, Lebanon; Tulane University School of Medicine; Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System in New Orleans; and St. George HospitalUniversity Medical Center in Beirut. Clearly, his expertise has been in high demand; and Abi Rafeh is highly regarded in research and education relevant to CTO PCI. He currently serves as a consultant and complex CTO PCI physician proctor for multiple companies and co-chairs the American Progress CTO Registry for the MENATA Chapter (Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and Asia). He is also a past director and founder of Tulane Medical Center’s CTO program. Throughout his career, Abi Rafeh has been dedicated to sharing his knowledge and expertise with future generations of physicians. His commitment to doing so has seen him as an adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine, faculty member and interventionalist with The Heart and Vascular Institute at Tulane University School of Medicine, and associate professor of medicine for Balamand University School of Medicine in Beirut.
After earning a medical degree from the Lebanese University School of Medicine in Lebanon, he moved to the U.S. in 2004 to complete an internship, residency as chief resident and fellowship as chief fellow in cardiovascular medicine through Staten Island University Hospital in New York. From there, he completed a second fellowship in interventional cardiology at Tulane University in New Orleans. Now certified in interventional cardiology and as a diplomate in cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Abi Rafeh also is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
FEBRUARY 2022
27
He also serves on the editorial board of multiple peer review journals in addition to contributing to several research books and articles for peerreviewed journals, including The Lancet, Journal of Women’s Health, Journal for Healthcare Quality, and the International Journal of Cardiology. Interestingly, Abi Rafeh has been a lover of cardiology since he was a child. “I know its cliché, but I’ve been fascinated by the dynamics of the heart since I was a little kid,” he says. That deep-seated passion is clear in his dogged pursuit of knowledge, his growing expertise, and his desire to keep moving forward in technology, innovation, and technique for patient care and treatment options. For Abi Rafeh, it’s not just a career—it’s a calling. “I love the challenge of cardiology because it’s a specialty with multiple areas of focus,” he says. “From reading heart images with radiology and reviewing lab work with patients in the clinic to performing innovative heart surgeries and procedures alongside our Cath Lab team, interventional cardiology can make a difference in someone’s life quickly. That is what drives me every day.” As prestigious as his career has been, Abi Rafeh gives praise to a higher power. “I credit the Lord with everything that has happened in my life, from my family to my career,” he says. “My greatest pride is what the Lord has provided me. He gave me everything, and He can take it all at any time.” Naturally, moving to the U.S. after a lifetime in his home country was not easy, but Abi Rafeh recognized the opportunities for himself and his family—specifically along the NorthShore. “When it came time to plant roots for our family, my wife and I considered numerous opportunities
across the U.S.,” he says. “We chose the NorthShore area because of the kindness and hospitality. You can never go wrong raising your children in this environment.” For the people in his care, Abi Rafeh is a gift, a kind-hearted warrior in a battle for their lives. With a smile, he offers reassurance. With his words, he gives hope. In this day and age of so much worry, that hope is a lifeline. says. “Sometimes it's best to give them the tools, the resources, and the latitude to let them do what they do.”

BRIDE
Cathy +Mike
AFTER ALL THESE YEARS BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
In the case of Cathy Alba and Mike Saucier, the saying that it’s never too late for love couldn’t be truer, as the two knew each other for more than 30 years before they even began to explore the possibility of a romantic relationship. FEBRUARY 2022

“W
he’re in a similar industry and were members of the same professional organizations for decades, but knew each other mostly just by name,” explains Cathy, who is a founding member of Triple Net Lease, a commercial real estate development and investment company, while Mike is president and founder of the Gulf States Real Estate Companies in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. “Several years ago, I was working in Chicago and had to come back to Covington for an industry event. Mike was speaking at the event and invited me to sit with members of his company. We continued to cross paths, and his company assisted me with some real estate projects locally. Eventually, we started dating long distance, during which time Mike and I kept two residences in Chicago and Fairhope, Alabama.”
As time went on, Mike realized that he wanted more than a longdistance relationship. “I started planning to propose to Cathy in the summer of 2020,” he recalls. “We would pop in and look at rings at various jewelry stores so I could get an idea of what she liked. After finding a beautiful 1920s vintage diamond surrounded by sapphires, I secretly purchased that ring and had a custom platinum setting cast that was similar to another ring that she was also fond of. The finished ‘work of art’ arrived from New York at Estate Jewelers in Fairhope on a cloudy Tuesday in February of 2021. I took time
32
SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
at lunch to pick up the ring which was more outstanding than I could have envisioned. My level of excitement coupled with the fact that the sun quickly appeared through the clouds as I walked out of the store, I decided that that was the day I would propose. Cathy and I had talked about hanging a swing under the largest oak tree on her 110-acre ranch in Fairhope, so I took the rest of the day off, purchased and hung the swing, then gathered her favorite champagne, two glasses, and some fake flowers stolen from an arrangement in the house and asked her to come home a little early from work that evening. I knew there was no way she would ever suspect a proposal on a random Tuesday! When I proposed and she accepted, I explained to her that I chose this spot, and this tree, because its strength and longevity were something I wanted our marriage to mirror.” Eight months later, on October 30, 2021, Cathy dressed in a sleeveless double-silk, cream-colored gown with a full-length flowing skirt and sleeveless V-neck top to walk down the aisle and marry a plaid-jacket-designer-jeans-and-gray-lizard-skin-boot-clad Mike at their home on the Tchefuncte River. After exchanging vows, the newlyweds joined their guests for a reception on the grounds, where they served a buffet catered by Pat Gallagher.
Filled with laughter, joy, and celebration, the evening was a memorable one. “After we were formally introduced and then danced our first dance to ‘Fields of Gold’ by Sting, Mike asked the DJ for the floor,” Cathy recalls. “When he had everyone’s attention, he explained that each invited guest had played some role in our relationship and our lives together. Then, later in the evening, Mike did the ‘gator’ on the dance floor three times. Also, in lieu of the second dance being for the bridal party, we arranged for the DJ to call for a married couples’ dance, during which the DJ narrowed the participants by asking how many years they had been married. The last couple dancing was married 48 years and just so happened to be Mike’s sister Kathy and her husband—also named Mike.”
After cutting into a four-tier cake from Zoe’s Bakery featuring white chocolate raspberry, traditional butter cream, and chocolate adorned with lace and beading appliques as well as a cascade of fresh flowers, the couple was sent off to begin their honeymoon in Exumas Islands, Bahamas. Now back home in Covington, the newlyweds are looking forward to the next 30 years—and happy that they’ll be spending them together.

Love IRL
BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
After meeting online, Peyton Boudreaux and Colin Leake felt they had enough spark to meet in person, and after three years of dating, the two knew that had enough spark to last a lifetime. Still, there was the little matter of actually getting engaged to attend to…
38
SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
“When Colin and I started talking about getting engaged, I gave him a handful of days that I did not want to get engaged on, just because they are so cliché,” says Peyton, who works with her mother and sister at Kiki & Lolli in Covington as well as being Show Room Manager for Southern Tots & Co. at Dallas Market Center, while Colin works for Drake Engineering in Harvey. “The list included Christmas, my college graduation, Valentine’s Day, or my birthday. So what did he do? He proposed on my birthday! We planned a dinner at Pardo’s in Mandeville with my family—my mom, dad, sister, brother-in-law, and nephew—and Colin’s parents (he’s an only child). When we got to the restaurant, there were these party poppers on the table as place cards, and I, not knowing that my ring was inside, start to shake mine. Everyone tells me that it’s just decoration to leave it alone. We go through the whole meal, and then the waiter tells us to pop the poppers. As I was watching everyone else open theirs and Hershey’s Kisses fall out, I decided to just shake mine out onto the table. I heard a clink and looked down on the table. And there it was, my engagement ring! Then I looked to my right, and Colin was down on one knee!” Thirteen months later, on October 23, 2021, Peyton walked down the aisle at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Orleans, wearing an A-line ball gown with sparkling tulle and lace details throughout— though she was slightly upstaged by her nephew, who waived and high-fived people as he proceeded down the aisle with the rings.
As their 12 attendants stood by, Peyton and Colin exchanged vows and promised a lifetime of love to one another. Pronounced man and wife, the newlyweds joined their guests for a reception at the NOPSI Hotel in New Orleans, where they feasted on hors d’oeuvres and a buffet that included two oyster bars, a selection of salads, bacon wrapped shrimp, mini grilled cheeses, fried mac and cheese balls, a pasta station, a risotto station, and two carving stations.

After dining and dancing to music played by the band Three Thirty Seven, the couple cut into their four-tier masterpiece, a decadent white chocolate and pecan caramel cream cheese confection which featured their wedding colors of green and gold, with an accent of hand-rolled marble fondant and two bunches of handmade sugar flowers. Adding to the wowfactor, Colin’s grooms cake was a sushi board made of carrot cake. Keeping their guests in a sweet and spirited mood, the late night party featured boozy bourbon milkshakes. Having celebrated their union, the happily wed Leakes were sent off to start their honeymoon in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic at the Royalton Punta Cana. Now back in Covington, the Leakes are happy that they found their spark—and are looking forward to lighting up the future.

TAYLER LANDRY SUPERMOM
By Liesel Schmidt
A
s the owner of Evolve Studio, Tayler Landry knows well the meaning of balance and dedication. While her work in running two locations requires a different type of both, Landry’s home life requires balance and dedication to her family: three little ones and a husband who all depend on her to keep things running smoothly.

SUPERMOM
M
arried almost a decade to her husband Justin, Landry loves the life they share with their children, ages seven, five, and one. “My kids are full of life, adventure, and personality,” says 35 year-old Landry. “Estelle loves to dance, Jude is working on becoming a star soccer player, and Gabe loves his food more than any child I've ever met. We call him the one-year-old foodie. My husband and I love to cook, be outdoors and active. My husband also teaches classes at the studio although he has a full-time career in real estate development with Stirling Properties. We try to do everything together as a family, as crazy as it can be sometimes, because we know moments together are precious and time moves way too fast!”
With so much on her plate, Landry naturally faces challenges in getting it all done. “Being a working mom means long days and even longer to-do lists,” she says. “My businesses are like my fourth and fifth children; and as a business owner, work never stops. In most jobs, leaving for the day is when the workday ends. My work starts the second I open my eyes and ends when I go to bed. My clients are like family, as well, and I am always there for them. Over the years, I have had to work on balancing work, kids, and homelife very intentionally. 48
SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
Time management, planning, organization, and boundary setting have helped me be successful in finding the best balance possible. Still, it’s a daily learning experience as my businesses and kids grow. I never stop, but I like it that way!” As busy as her day-to-day is, Landry feels that what she’s doing is enriching not only to her life, but to her children’s, as well. “My kids are always with me,” she notes. “I pick them up every day from school, I cook breakfast for them every morning and dinner every night—all of which I ensure are healthy and balanced options. Those are very important things to me. My kids should not suffer because my job or career does not allow me to give them the things they deserve. They see and notice how hard I work for them, and this is teaching them valuable life skills. I believe they are learning drive, motivation, accountability, discipline, and that it is possible to be both a wonderful mother and a successful business owner. And as a fringe benefit, they are learning about healthy choices and lifestyles by witnessing my business operations and what they offer. You should not have to choose between a life passion, work life, or your family. I believe it is all possible, and I know they will feel the same by growing up in a household like ours.”
As the three little people in her life get older, Landry wants them to always know how important they are to her and remember what she has taught them. “I want them to remember that I've shown them anything is possible,” she says. “No goal is too high. You can go so much further than you imagined with hard work and determination. I also hope they remember that we always had fun. I dance with my kids, sing songs when they eat dinner, and play music as loud as we can in the car with the rule that everyone must sing. I hope they remember those little moments of fun.” Landry also has a lot of special traditions with her children. “My daughter and I love to cook together. At age seven, she can chop vegetables, cook herself an entire meal, and will often make breakfast for the family on Sunday morning. I also coach my son's soccer team, which has become pretty special. At night, I always tuck each child in, and we say a prayer together, after which I always bless them on their foreheads. They will not go to sleep without being blessed. This was a tradition my mom started, and I have continued it with my little ones.”
Preschool through 7th grade
As she has watched them grow and change, Landry has learned a great deal from her kids. “They’re all so different,” she says. “They have taught me how to relate and parent each one of them based on their own unique personality and spirit. This has helped me to recognize the uniqueness in others as well during my daily interactions in life. They have shown me how to improve my interpersonal skills and truly connect with people in ways that are meaningful to them. My daughter has shown me how to always see the bright side of things with her lively spirit, my son has shown me compassion and empathy with his tender soul, and my youngest has taught me that a genuine smile can light up a room, so always choose happiness. I am so grateful for each of them.”

uilt in 2019, the 3700 square foot home comprises five bedrooms and four baths as well as a movie room in addition to the living spaces, each room created with a deft eye for detail and discriminating taste. “All of our drapes throughout the home are from Shading Places by Jennifer Pacione, and the majority of my furniture is from Eros with Erin Schaumburg,” says Elizabeth Mattern, who shares the home with her husband, Tommy, and their two young children.

That sense of sophistication and eye for detail is one that begins before one even enters the home. Set amid a lush landscape meticulously maintained by All Pro Outdoor Services LLC, the Mattern house is one that catches the eye, inviting the imagination to wonder what must lay beyond its crisp white façade. Within its light-filled front foyer, walnut-stained hardwood floors lead to an open concept living space that flows into a spacious kitchen boasting luxurious finishes. Replete with a stainless-steel KitchenAid appliance suite, gold finishes play the perfect accent to clean white custom cabinetry that traces out the perimeter. A massive center island sets off the space, juxtaposed with dark wood cabinetry crowned with white quartz. “The kitchen in one of the most-used, most loves spaces in our home,” says Elizabeth, who is a stay-at-home mom to Sophia and Maximus, while her husband works for US Health Insurance.

Just off the kitchen, a casual dining area is surrounded on three sides by floor-to-ceiling windows that afford a view of the pool area, where a large, glittering pool beckons. To the side of the walled-in back patio area, a full kitchen and outdoor entertainment area is complete with stainless steel appliances and lounge seating for days spent outdoors. “People tell me often that our home is like a beautiful live dollhouse, and they love our landscaping— especially with our outdoor kitchen and pool area,” says Elizabeth.

Naturally, the master suite is one that continues the feel of luxury, with subtly printed wallpaper on an accent wall behind the bed. A vintage-style chandelier offers delicate lighting, while windows line an entire wall, spilling natural light into the space and overlooking the backyard. In the adjoining master bath, a freestanding tub is set off by a decorative tile backsplash that runs the height off the wall, while an elaborate chandelier hangs from the center of the ceiling, mirrored by two vanity fixtures on either side of the room. To one side, a vanity space and full-height cabinetry offers storage and function as well as a bit of glamour, while the opposite side boasts double sinks. At the back of the room, a walk-in shower finishes the spa-like feel of the grand space. “Our master suite is amazing—and, of course, one of my favorite rooms,” Elizabeth notes.

MEGAN HAGGERTY STORY BY KAYLA BERTUCCI
T
he lush mountains turned back into plains and then into swampy marshland, and I just bet “country road, take me home,” were the lyrics ringing through the speakers of Megan Haggerty’s car as she drove from Knoxville, Tennessee back towards her hometown of Slidell. She had just finished her master’s at the University of Tennessee, but decided it was time to start a family in the place she was raised.
“I actually married my high school sweetheart, Sean Haggerty, and we now have four children Sean Patrick (15), Alex (14), Mia (10), and Luke (6),” Megan describes. So, all of our favorite outings primarily revolve around the kids’ activities! We spend a lot of time at various tennis clubs like Stone Creek or Crossgates to watch our boys. Mia is very committed to dance and loves her Infinity Dance Production family. On occasion, Sean and I are able to squeeze in a date night,” she jokes. “You will find us at Nathan’s, because it’s the absolute best food in St. Tammany!” Immersing herself in the local culture, Megan took on the role as Business Development Director at the St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce. Her goal was to be a beacon of light at the Chamber and help businesses navigate through the uncharted times of COVID-19. “My time there as the Business Development Director was so rewarding. I had the opportunity to meet so many of our business owners and professionals, from both large and 74

small sectors. They are all the backbone of our great parish. While our parish has so many personalities between the different towns, one Parish Chamber helps unite the business communities and help St Tammany prosper and grow,” says Megan. The love of the NorthShore for Megan doesn’t just stop at family, businesses, and the people who make up this great parish, but it also engulfs that of our four-legged friends. Joining the Humane Society as the Development Director, Megan’s new mission is to see a special and unprecedented project through to completion.
“You will find us at Nathan's, because it's the best food in St. Tammany!”
“I am beyond excited about my new position with the Humane Society,” shares Megan. “As most people know, the current shelter is very old and in poor condition. So, a capital campaign is being launched to help raise the funds needed to build a new Humane Society! Twelve acres have already been donated for the site of the project. But we will need the support from the entire St. Tammany community to make this center a reality. I look forward to leading this charge and raising the necessary funds, along with informing the Parish on the need for a new center for our four-legged citizens!” With a groundbreaking planned for 2022, Megan says it’ll take the compassionate hearts of St. Tammany Parish residents to make this new shelter a reality. A side bar - Megan is involved in other activities including volunteering with Hometown Hero’s, board member for Bring it Home Northshore, a Rosie for East Habitat for Humanity, and board member of the Slidell Zoning and Adjustment board.
“I am beyond excited about my new position with the Humane Society. As most people know, the current shelter is very old and in poor condition. So, a capital campaign is being launched to help raise the funds needed to build a new Humane Society!”

Habit STW Celebrates 40th Anniversary with a Wall Raising [COVINGTON, LA] – Tears of joy were shed as the Habitat STW board, staff, supporters and partners gathered to raise the first wall of the Levin family home in Covington on Friday, January 28th. Temperatures were low, but spirits were high and everyone was happy to see 40th anniversary homebuyer, Heather Levin, reach this milestone in her journey to home ownership. President & CEO, Terri Gage, opened the program with a little background of Habitat STW then Father Robert of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church gave a blessing. Heather’s homeowner counselor, Chevelle McCrary, spoke a bit about Heather’s journey and Caitlin Hunter of our presenting sponsor, Chevron, touched on Chevron’s commitment to community support. After the program, everyone was invited to help raise the nearly 60-foot wall kicking off the construction of her Habitat STW home. Heather’s sons, Bentley and Colson, set off confetti cannons as the crowd cheered in support of all of Heather’s accomplishments that got her to where she was in that moment.

Habitat STW receives grant from Northshore Community Foundation [COVINGTON, LA] – The Northshore Community Foundation (NCF) established the Northshore Weather Relief Fund to support nonprofit organizations doing critical work following weather events in St. Tammany, Washington, Tangipahoa, and St. Helena Parishes. Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West (Habitat STW) received a $17,000 grant from this fund in support of our Homeowner Deductible Assistance Program. Susan Bonnett Bourgeois, President/CEO of Northshore Community Foundation, says “We are incredibly grateful to the Foundation supporters, donors and members who have enabled us to bring relief to those struggling with recovery from Hurricane Ida.” Forty Habitat STW homeowners received substantial damage to their homes due to Hurricane Ida. As a result, many faced high deductible payments that were not a part of their family budgets. To help address this need, Habitat STW created the Homeowner Deductible Assistance program to grant qualified homeowners funds to pay their deductible amounts and enable them to keep a balanced home budget. 80
