Last year’s sold out event welcomed a crowd of about 500 people, raising nearly $325,000 in support of critically ill people, pets, and a brave pack of dogs.
Phoenix’s story is one of incredible resilience and unwavering faith. A St. Paul’s graduate as of May 18th, 2024, Phoenix’s journey to this milestone has been nothing short of extraordinary. On July 2nd, Phoenix suffered a cardiac arrest leading to a global anoxic brain injury after being without oxygen for up to an hour. Given the prognosis of severe impairment or even death, the odds were daunting. But against all expectations, Phoenix survived and continues to defy the grim statistics associated with such injuries. This journey is a testament to the power of faith and the human spirit.
Reflecting on this life-altering event, Phoenix’s perspective on life and leadership has profoundly changed. “I’m grateful for EVERYTHING, because I’m blessed to have anything,” Phoenix says. Before the accident, life was a series of motions, a path to a future taken for granted. Now, every step forward is a hard-won battle, a testament to resilience and determination. “When you have to fight for something, you appreciate it so much more.”
One of the greatest challenges during Phoenix’s recovery has been the temporary loss of the ability to speak. “People don’t know I’m the same Phoenix—same intellect, wit, and overall personality. I’m all there, it is just slow getting out as my brain is in the process of reorganizing.” Despite this communication barrier, Phoenix’s spirit remains unbroken. With the aid of an iPad, Phoenix painstakingly formulates sentences, confident that God will eventually restore the ability to speak.
The support of family, friends, and the community has been instrumental in Phoenix’s recovery. “My parents refused the news of death and prayed the Lord would intervene in my life, and He did,” Phoenix recounts. Through a Facebook outreach initiated by Phoenix’s mother, a global prayer army formed, offering support and strength during critical times. This communal support, along with the dedication of a caring rehab team, has played a crucial role in Phoenix’s ongoing recovery.
Phoenix’s journey is marked by moments of unexpected recovery. “Many things I couldn’t do, somehow without relearning them, I could do again like play chess, card games, type and navigate my iPad, and build Lego sets of over 2100 pieces.” These miraculous recoveries are celebrated as milestones, each one a testament to the miracles Phoenix has experienced.
Looking to the future, Phoenix’s plans have been reshaped but not diminished. Starting a research program at Boston University in the fall, Phoenix is determined to pursue academic goals despite the challenges. “I trust the Lord with my future. When I laid down my college goals, one of my speech therapists came across a research program where college students with brain injuries can better on-ramp back into pursuing their degrees after intense cognitive and communication rehab work.”
Phoenix’s advice to others facing difficult times is simple yet profound: “Never give up. God can redeem any trial, challenge, or adversity if you put your trust in Him. He can carry you through the fire. He can write a better story for your life than you can. Your life is so valuable because it’s connected to a greater plan, one of great purpose.”
Throughout this journey, Phoenix has continued to inspire others by sharing the recovery process publicly on Facebook. This transparency has served to uplift and encourage many, spreading a message of faith, hope, and perseverance. “By sharing my trial with others, the good and the challenging, and by pointing to the One who is faithful, I aim to inspire others.”
Phoenix’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the profound impact of faith and community support. As a community leader, Phoenix continues to inspire, proving that even in the face of unimaginable adversity, hope and determination can lead to extraordinary outcomes.

MACKENZIE AND ME
Chazzie WilliamsMeet Dr. Clint Schoolfield, a general surgeon at Ochsner, the largest health system in Louisiana. Since joining Ochsner in 2018, Dr. Schoolfield has exemplified the commitment to both his profession and his family, balancing the demands of a rigorous medical career with the joys and challenges of fatherhood.
After beginning his journey with Ochsner in Kenner, Dr. Schoolfield transitioned to Slidell Memorial Hospital, which facilitated a move to Mandeville—an area he and his wife, Nicole, had always envisioned as their family’s home. “We knew we wanted to end up on the Northshore,” he shares, reflecting on their decision to settle in the close-knit community. Dr. Schoolfield and Nicole’s story is one of dedication, resilience, and love. They met in 2012 while living in New Orleans. He was wrapping up his medical studies at LSUHSC, and she was working in journalism. Their relationship flourished despite the miles between them during his residency in Shreveport. They married in New Orleans in 2016, welcoming their first child, Harrison, the following year.
A fellowship took them to Washington, D.C., where their daughter, Mary Margaret, was born. Despite the chaos of raising two babies in a small apartment, the couple cherished their time in the capital. However, the desire to be closer to family brought them back to Louisiana.
After a stint in River Ridge, they finally made their dream move to Mandeville amidst the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic. Their family continued to grow with the arrivals of Shepard in 2021 and Lily in 2022. “Being a working dad is challenging,” Dr. Schoolfield admits. Balancing the responsibilities of a surgeon with the role of a father often means missing out on family moments. However, he draws strength from knowing Nicole is at home, managing their bustling household. “She deserves a Super Mom title for all she does,” he emphasizes, acknowledging her unwavering support and dedication to their children.
Despite the demands of his profession, Dr. Schoolfield is committed to enriching his children’s lives. His work ethic serves as a powerful example to them, demonstrating the importance of hard work and compassion. “I want my kids to understand that I work hard to provide for our family and help others,” he says. “But they also know that when I’m home, they have my full attention and love.” One of his proudest moments is witnessing his children develop their unique personalities. “Nicole and I want our kids to grow up kind and caring, pursuing their own passions,” he explains. This philosophy is reinforced through family traditions, such as weekend pancake breakfasts. “I’m the pancake maker,” he laughs. “The kids love helping with the batter, and it’s a small but special ritual we share.” Dr. Schoolfield believes his children have taught him invaluable lessons. Their inquisitiveness and pure joy remind him to appreciate life’s simple pleasures. “They pay attention to everything I do, which has made me more mindful of my actions,” he reflects. “Sometimes, I have to remind myself to enjoy life as much as they do.”
In the end, it’s the love and support of his family that keeps Dr. Schoolfield grounded. “My family is my proudest accomplishment,” he says. “Every decision I make is with them in mind, and that balance between work and home life makes me better in both roles.” Dr. Clint Schoolfield embodies the spirit of a SuperDad, skillfully navigating the complexities of his profession while fostering a nurturing and loving home environment. His story is a testament to the profound impact of dedication, love, and community.

HUGS4Kids is a beacon of hope and joy for children facing significant health challenges, with a mission that is as simple as it is profound: to bring smiles to the faces of children. They recognize the transformative power of a smile, a small act that can uplift spirits and bring light into the darkest of times.
The cornerstone of HUGS4Kids is their annual fashion show for pediatric patients. Nominated by their doctors and nurses, these brave young warriors get to walk the runway, dressed to the nines, in an event that makes them feel like stars. This isn’t just about fashion—it’s about joy, confidence, and a brief escape from their medical struggles. The charity also helps fundraise for specific needs, like out-of-town treatments or granting special wishes, always striving to make dreams come true.
The spark that ignited HUGS4Kids came in 2011 when a Walgreens store manager on Carrollton Avenue in New Orleans encountered Lamika, a little girl with terminal brain cancer whose dream was to be a fashion model. This chance meeting led to an incredible effort to fulfill her wish. The store manager and his team, partnering with Children’s Hospital, Fashion Week, and Project Runway, put on a fashion show that was nothing short of magical. Lamika’s joy and gratitude inspired the unofficial start of HUGS4Kids, which became an official nonprofit in 2018.
One of the most touching success stories is, indeed, that of Lamika. Though she passed away a few months after her dream fashion show, her legacy continues to shine brightly. The hospital reached out, requesting another fashion show for other young patients, and thus a beautiful tradition was born. From a modest beginning with six participants, the event now features up to 43 children each year. Some participants have even pursued professional modeling careers, with Lamika and another girl, Rita, having walked in high-profile shows in New Orleans and New York. These stories exemplify the lasting impact of HUGS4Kids.
Like all great endeavors, HUGS4Kids faces challenges. Post-pandemic, securing venues for their shows was difficult, but they have found a home in Slidell. The biggest ongoing challenge is finding sponsors each year to support their mission.
Community involvement is crucial for HUGS4Kids. Donations, especially for outfits (with a particular need for younger boys and girls), are always welcome. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization, helping with everything from hair and makeup to guiding kids and setting up the event. The upcoming fashion show on Friday, June 28th at the Slidell Auditorium promises to be a night of magic and smiles, starting at 6 pm, with doors opening at 4 pm for the kids to prepare. Daniel Munn will be the emcee for a second year, adding to the excitement and continuity of the event.
The support from the Slidell community has been nothing short of extraordinary. Individuals and businesses alike have rallied around HUGS4Kids, offering their time, services, and resources. Major sponsors like Glad Electric, Krewe of Dionysus, Ochsner/Slidell Memorial, Kids In Development Slidell (KIDS), and Wigs By Tiffani ensure that the event remains free for the children, allowing them to focus solely on the joy of the moment.
Looking to the future, HUGS4Kids dreams of expanding their reach, perhaps holding fashion shows twice a year or moving to even larger venues. Their vision is to continue offering these magical experiences, ensuring that every child they touch can forget their struggles, even if just for one night, and simply be a kid.
In the end, HUGS4Kids is about more than just fashion shows—it’s about creating moments of pure joy and unforgettable memories. When a child smiles, despite their immense challenges, it is a powerful reminder of the difference compassion and community can make.
“…She was there for me every step of the way…”
When I went to Dr. Cooper, I was very nervous and afraid. I mean elective surgery is a big step. Not only did she make me feel at ease, I felt she was sincere. She didn’t make me feel as though I really needed the surgery. If anything, I walked out of there with more self confidence and that was before I actually had the surgery. She was there for me every step of the way, before and after. I have received so many compliments from the work she did. I have and will continue to recommend her to everyone.

Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher?
My mom, a reading and ESL teacher for over 30 years, influenced me to become a teacher. Watching her make students feel special and excited to learn inspired me to create a similar environment in my Kindergarten classroom.
What is your biggest challenge as a teacher?
My biggest challenge is forming deep connections with my students and supporting them through tough times, as their struggles often become my own. For instance, I supported a student with a brain tumor by visiting her in the hospital, bringing her missed classwork, and organizing a fundraiser to help her family with expenses. Balancing the emotional weight of these relationships with the demands of teaching can be difficult. However, these connections are also what make teaching so meaningful and impactful for me.
What do you feel is the biggest reward?
The biggest reward is seeing the growth in my students from shy and unsure at the beginning of the year to confident and reading by the end. Watching them believe in themselves and reach their potential is incredibly fulfilling.
How do you make learning fun for your students?
I incorporate “Fun Fridays” with hands-on activities like making bread and butter during colonial lessons and hosting a “wedding” for Q and U. These activities make learning memorable and enjoyable, helping students engage deeply with the material.
If you could leave your students with one message, what would it be? You’ll always be a shining star! I’m grateful to have set the foundation for your educational future and hope you always believe in yourself.

What accomplishment are you most proud of as a man in business?
My grandfather, L.P. Smith, and my father, E.T. Riecke, instilled in me a mindset of continuous growth and building. My father showed me through his example of operating American Bank the importance of building a thriving organization. I appreciate the opportunity to carry their legacy forward.
Who has been the most influential male figure in your life, and why?
I appreciate the businessmen who have influenced me and helped shape our community. My father and grandfather were among the early leaders who helped direct how the Northshore would grow, but they were not alone. Wallace Poole certainly comes to mind. One lesson I learned from Mr. Poole is that “a firm understanding in the beginning is better than a misunderstanding later on.”
What book or resource has impacted you the most?
A Man in Full by Tom Wolfe was a Christmas gift in 1998. It is a cautionary tale about ego and getting overly extended financially and reestablishing and reinventing yourself after a fall. I have thought about certain lines in that book many times. I read The Art of War by Sun Tzu in college like many business-minded undergrads did in the late 80’s and early 90’s; I love the book because it transcends time from around 500 B.C. to today and is still useful in strategy and weighing risk versus reward.
What are your favorite hobbies, and have you picked up any new ones or rediscovered old ones?
I’ve cherished vintage motorcycles for as long as I can remember. Although I briefly stepped away from riding, my passion was recently rekindled. Now, I’m actively collecting and riding. I love it!

Who has been the most influential male figure in your life?
My grandfather and my uncle were both very influential in my life, making me the person that I am today. They instilled great values and a very strong work ethic in me, and I try every day to live up to the standards that they set for me.
How does your work inspire you, and how has it evolved to keep inspiring you?
Our industry is constantly changing; the styles change, the colors change, and it happens very quickly compared to many other industries. We are constantly researching so that we can keep up with the current trends and how they will affect our business. The current market trends may not be what we like personally, so this pushes all of us to constantly push our design boundaries.
What is your favorite thing about this community, and which charitable organization are you most passionate about? I was born and raised here, moved away for 16 years, and then moved my family back home. I love that the community is still small, and people here are always willing to help each other out. The sense of unity within our community is still very strong. We work with Habitat for Humanity Restore, and we love how they continue to help those in need in the community.
What are your favorite hobbies, and have you picked up any new ones or rediscovered old ones?
At this stage in my life, all of my hobbies revolve around my family, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I do still have a little time left over for my love of antique cars and hunting.
What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?
The advice I would give my younger self is to pursue what you love and not let anyone discourage you from entering the interior design field or any other field because of gender. Too often, children are steered into stereotypical classes and activities based on gender rather than their passions, interests, and skills.
How does your work inspire you, and how has it evolved to keep inspiring you?
I love how interior design is always evolving, and each client has their unique personal style. This continuous change keeps me inspired, as I strive to create perfect spaces that reflect each client's individuality.
Describe your community involvement, and any new ways you've engaged with the community.
One of my passions is teaching children through music and worship at First Baptist Church of Covington. On Sundays and during other church events, I collaborate with other team members to transform the components of an adultstyle church service into a fun, engaging worship experience for preschoolers.
What is your spirit animal, or if you could choose a new one that represents your current state, what would it be and why?
My spirit animal would be the flamingo. To me, flamingos represent open-heartedness, creativity, balance, love, and self-expression. These are traits that I treasure.

Jason Zito, owner of Zito’s AC & Heating, Inc., has built a successful company by meeting the community's HVAC needs. His journey to success was fueled by hard work and determination. “My greatest achievement has been my personal growth and creating a legacy,” Zito shares. “I’m incredibly proud of starting my business from the ground up. I had a vision early in my career to be self-employed, and I didn’t stop until I achieved that goal.”
A key influence in Zito’s journey was Mark Grillo, Sr., a business owner of 23 years. “Mark took me under his wing in 2005 when he gave me an opportunity at his company. We traveled through the British West Indies and Grenadines Islands for about four years, doing HVACR work in various supermarket chains. During our time together, Mark taught me how to run a successful business, which encouraged me to start my own in 2016.”
To aspiring business owners, Zito advises: “Beat the sun up every morning. No matter what challenges arise, never give up. Set a goal and don’t stop until you achieve it. Although there will be hardships, don’t let them discourage you. Success doesn’t happen overnight or by accident.”

Built in 2004, this luxurious retreat spans over 5,214 square feet, offering a tranquil escape with its unique blend of architecture and natural splendor.
Frantasia is a three-level sanctuary featuring four bedrooms (the fourth serving as a versatile guest suite), five full baths, and a half-bath powder room. The exterior exudes a Mediterranean vibe, with terra cotta-like metal roofing tiles that provide both aesthetic charm and hurricane resistance. The property’s facade, adorned with repurposed bricks, intricate ironwork, and antique streetlamps, tells a story of timeless beauty and historical significance.
For the owner, choosing a favorite spot within Frantasia is akin to choosing a favorite child. Every corner of the property offers a unique retreat. From the moment one drives off Canal Road and onto the brick driveway, peace and relaxation ensue. The journey to the house is lined with a vibrant array of flowers, plants, and trees, culminating at the water garden—a perfect spot for a sunset cocktail beside the firepit.
The Serenity Garden, complete with the Stations of the Cross, offers a tranquil space for reflection and gratitude. Beyond the house, the pool, deck pier, and boathouse beckon with promises of leisure and stunning water views. Inside, the primary suite is a haven with its steam shower and soaker tub, offering a private oasis to wash away the day’s worries.
Stepping inside Frantasia, visitors are greeted by an ambiance of upscale casual comfort. The interior design showcases a collection of cherished art pieces from the owner’s travels, illuminated by the abundant natural light. Murano glass art pieces and chandeliers sparkle in the sun, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere.
The main level's open floor plan is perfect for entertaining, seamlessly connecting the chef’s dream kitchen with the living and dining areas. Equipped with a Subzero refrigerator, Wolf range, double oven, and warming drawer, the kitchen is ideal for both novice cooks and culinary enthusiasts. The plentiful cabinetry ensures that all party essentials are at hand for any gathering.
Frantasia’s design thoughtfully accommodates seasonal activities and intimate gatherings. The downstairs guest suite doubles as a party space, frequently used during summer for poolside fun. Meanwhile, the main level serves as the heart of the home for more intimate get-togethers, offering a cozy yet elegant setting.
One of Frantasia’s most captivating features is its panoramic views. From sunrise to sunset, the property offers glimpses of dolphins swimming near the pier and wildlife like deer, coyotes, and owls. The home’s location, set back over seven hundred feet from Canal Road, provides a secluded, peaceful atmosphere that feels like a private paradise.
