MBPCC, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, is a place solely dedicated to meeting the needs of cancer patients and their families, offering a single-minded focus on cancer care. “Preserving that vision is my job,” he says. To that end, Stevens’s work as CEO focuses on allocating resources to support physicians and patients and remove barriers to care so that, physicians can be completely focused on treating their patients without distractions such as insurance payments or access to resources or equipment. A large part of his work has also involved increasing access to early detection and screening, which was made possible, in part, by investing in mobile screening units that go into the community and to workplaces to screen individuals. “This program, Prevention on the Go, has truly moved the needle on early prevention and detection. We’ve screened nearly 100,000 individuals since the program began, saved thousands of lives, and educated hundreds of thousands of people in our state,” Stevens says proudly. “Our partnerships have helped drive innovation in cancer care and expanded access to leading-edge care across the region. Now, residents in Northshore communities can receive the best cancer care possible right here at home.” Under Stevens’s direction, MBPCC also invested in training the next generation of scientists and conducting radiation therapy research to enhance cancer care at home and around the world. “Through our joint Mary Bird Perkins/LSU Medical Physics Program, we have produced high-quality, much sought after graduates and clinical developments that have been shared across the globe, impacting patient care locally and internationally. In addition, our clinical research program provides patients in the region greater access to groundbreaking studies and translational research through national clinical trials.”

icture this: A building sitting on the Tchefuncte River, just waiting to be breathed with new life. For the owners of that building, the most obvious choice was to create sister restaurants in the space, using two concepts that were complementary yet very different to one another. In The Anchor, they offered a casual, family-friendly restaurant—but it needed a juxtaposition. The answer was Tchefuncte’s, an up-scale dining concept that would take advantage of the breathtaking views of the river provided by the second-floor location.
“A lot of energy was placed into every detail of the facility, with no stone left unturned,” says Chef Michael Gottlieb, executive chef of Tchefuncte’s and someone who has been with the restaurant since it was but a twinkle in its owners’ eyes. “Over the course of about a year, the restaurant has started to take shape; and we couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome. The fact that we are located right on the Tchefuncte River is absolutely a key attribute, and having two from-scratch concepts—one fine dining, one family-friendly casual— is also a big draw. It’s a great place to escape.” Open since the summer of 2020, Tchefuncte’s got its start somewhat inauspiciously, smack in the middle of COVID. “It made this an interesting venture for sure, but it also helped,” Gottlieb contends. “We were able to open slowly, socially distanced, and stay that way. We kept the safety of our associates and guests as the priority, so we have had COVID cleaning crews on hand to disinfect the property nightly. We have also offered COVID testing to all of our staff at any point they felt they needed to be tested. We’ve reacted to all CDC guidelines and have simply done the right thing anytime a COVID-related situation arose.” A beautiful location, paired with their stunning décor and exquisite food, makes Tchefuncte’s an ideal venue for intimate celebrations and events. “We are happy to be known as a special events venue for small groups,” says Gottlieb. “We have private rooms that seat anywhere from 10 to 50 guests, and we are always willing to rope off a section of The Anchor for a more casual event. We build events based on the client’s needs, so it never hurts to ask!”

H
unger is an increasing concern in this country, as more and more families face financial hardship and struggle to put food on the table. Fortunately, we as a nation are becoming more aware of this issue; and many programs have been set up to provide assistance to those in need.
Particularly hard times for those less fortunate are times of national economic crisis, when unmet needs and paltry pantries become even more of a problem. These are also the times when mercy is at its height: food pantries double their efforts to collect and distribute food items and meals, soup kitchens beef-up their volunteer staff in preparation for extra mouths to feed, and community-wide initiatives are set in motion to address the problem. The battle could not be so well-fought without organizations like the Northshore Food Bank, whose mission of feeding the hungry began in 1984. First established as Food Bank, Inc., of St. Tammany as a conglomeration of nine local ecumenical churches, the organization served about 40 families per week in its first year of operation. Over the past 37 years, the Northshore Food Bank has grown to serve food insecure families in all of St. Tammany as well as Washington Parish and distribute needed food items to almost 400 families each week. Bank operations as well as providing annual vouchers to registered Food Bank participants “The mission of the Northshore Food Bank for clothing and other basic essentials. is ‘serving the Northshore community by The numbers that the Northshore Food providing access to basic needs,’” says Bank sees are staggering: On average, Development Director Yvette Roussel. the organization helps nearly 4,000 “We provide food assistance to individuals individuals each year. increase in participant households.” With such a high need, funding is always a concern; and the Northshore Food Bank depends greatly on the generosity of local and national businesses, civic organizations, churches, and individuals throughout the year. They also hold two major annual fund raisers, though both events were cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19. Another invaluable source of funding comes from national and local grants as well as proceeds from the Northshore Food Bank Resale Shop. Another major challenge is identifying pockets of food-insecurity that they haven’t yet reached. “Knowing there are people struggling to have access to food and just don’t have the means to get to us is difficult,

IMPACT & GIVE BACK but we continue to form collaborations and work toward being able to identify these groups and find a way to distribute food assistance to them,” says Roussel. COVID has also caused a shift in the division of resources, and the Northshore Food Bank has experienced a spike in the need for donations of pantry-staple, non-perishable items. They’ve even had to increase the amount of food they purchase for distribution. Those challenges aside, there are many triumphs to celebrate. 2020 brought the opening of a new facility, which was pivotal in serving the needs of the many who came to their doors. That, coupled with the Community Cupboard remote distribution program for those who could not come to the center themselves, helped keep the food insecurities of the Northshore at bay.

Traci Plaisance THE KREWE CHIEF
As an officer of the Krewe of Selene for the past six years, Traci Plaisance has long had a full calendar of social events, krewe dos, and parades. Despite the fact that she took over as president at the height of COVID in April of 2020, she’s helped keep the krewe active—even while the parade route stays empty.
26
SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
Social Northshore: How long have you been a part of the Krewe of Selene? Traci Plaisance: I am proud to say that I am a
charter member, and this is my 23rd year as a member of Selene.
SN: What is your krewe’s platform? TP: The Krewe of Selene is more than just a Mardi
Gras Parade—we are a women’s social club that parades for fun, who get together to celebrate and support each other. We are a part of something bigger than Mardi Gras. We have our traditional Mardi Gras events, but we expand on those as much as we can. We also focus a lot on community work. We have a community outreach program in which we feature non-profits at our membership meetings to collect and donate needed items for organizations and groups ranging from our troops overseas to the Hospice House or Project Christmas.
SN: How long has the krewe been operating? TP: The Krewe of Selene was formed by a group of
businesswomen in 1998. This was the first all-women night parade in Slidell and quickly grew over the years to the largest parade on the Northshore, holding that title until Hurricane Katrina. We were once over 700 members strong.
SN: What other ways are you involved in the
community?
TP: I am a member of Rosie’s for Habitat for Humanity. I am also a Float Lieutenant with the Krewe of Titans and am actively involved with that krewe as well as being a past member of Steel Mimosas.
SN: How is the krewe staying active with all of the parades cancelled this year?
TP: We have done a lot virtually, from meetings to
games and stuff on social media. We are trying to stay as engaged with our members as much as possible. We have also had small gatherings for purse parties and other things such as Thirsty Thursdays or just a glass of wine at the Wine Market. Even without the parades, we have a full slate of events for the next year; and we can’t wait to get started.
SN: What do you love most about your work with the krewe? TP: The friendships I have made and the ladies I
have met over the past 23 years have been a blessing. This krewe gives you the ability to meet and mingle with people from everywhere and forge bonds with people you never thought you would.
SN: What are some of your hobbies? TP: Any function with any krewe or non-profit. My
life partner, Rob, and I also run buncos as fundraisers for many organizations, whether it’s a nonprofit or a team in any kind of sport. In everything we do,
we spend time with family and friends. Rob’s sons’ activities at school keep us busy, as well. When we have down-time, we are always camping, crafting, jewelry making, or cooking.
SN: What is your career history? TP: I am currently the recreation superintendent
for Pelican Park in Mandeville. I manage the youth sports and events for the 331-acre facility. My dad was on the Board of SBBA for 27 years and oversaw the building of what we use to call 10 Acres, so I grew up at the park and watched my dad work for the youth and the community as a volunteer. I always wanted to follow in his footsteps; and 13 years ago, I got that opportunity with Pelican Park as a recreation supervisor. Last July, I was promoted to the superintendent position.
SN: What are your favorite things to do on the Northshore? TP: We love going shopping or taking in a good
lunch and dinner on the weekend; and we like to shop local, as we know how important local businesses are. We also like to frequent museums or even travel and have little staycations in Louisiana to learn and soak in our culture. We live close to the trace; so every chance we get, we like to hop on our bikes and enjoy nature.

oasting a storybook quality that makes it almost enchanting, the home at 744 Plantation Drive in Abita Springs is the picture of French provincial architecture. Set on a lush green lawn and
accented by immaculately trimmed landscaping, the two-story house is stately and elegant—showing off just what earned its placement in the
2017 St. Tammany Parade of Homes. While such grandeur could easily be intimidating and cold, owners Toni and Tim Pazos have created a
home that is both stunningly beautiful and incredibly inviting. MARCH 2021

Built in 2017, the 4,895 square foot home comprises ten rooms, with three full bathrooms and four bedrooms as well as a spacious open concept living area that flows seamlessly into a massive kitchen. A study in shades of white with the barest hint of gray in its accents and the odd pop of navy blue, the house is filled with striking architectural features. Starting with the coffered ceiling in the living room and the wrought iron railings on the staircase to the coved ceiling in the dining area and the thick crown moulding that traces a line through the house.

As one of the most frequently used rooms of the home, the kitchen is every inch the entertainer’s dream, featuring a massive island with slate gray cabinetry crowned in white rhino marble.
Providing the perfect juxtaposition, the custom cabinetry tracing out an L-shaped perimeter is pure white, broken only by a backsplash of high-shine white subway tile inset with decorative marble tiling behind a stainless steel Thermador stove that takes pride of place in the suite of appliances that populate the space. Giving foundation to the room is reclaimed dirty-top hardwood flooring that flows throughout the first floor of the house to provide continuity and cohesion.

Just off the kitchen, the wet bar is recessed into the wall and enclosed by massive sliding doors inset with wire mesh that gives a whisper of what lies inside. “That’s one of the things that people really take notice of when they come into our home,” notes Toni, who works with her husband as an insurance agent for the Tim Pazos Insurance Agency. While the home is still largely unfurnished, the rooms that have been completed unmistakably bear Toni’s fingerprint. “This is a great home for entertaining, and I get inspired to finish furnishing and decorating it,” Toni says, pausing to give emphasis to her next statement. “It is definitely not finished!”

Naturally, the master suite is a massive affair, with a beautiful tray ceiling and multiple windows that flood the room with natural light. Boasting the same dirty top wood flooring that runs through the rest of the ground floor, the whiteness of the room is given a sense of warmth. Adjoining the space, the master bath is tiled in marble, with slate gray cabinets topped in marble and a vast marble tiled walk-through shower. “We call it the car wash,” Toni laughs. Completing the space is a freestanding slipper tub set against a paneled accent wall, with an elegant chandelier hanging above.

Claiming a location chosen for its proximity to the golf course—not to mention the spectacular sunsets that are visible from the backyard—the Pazos home is hardly without its charms outdoors to match those inside. Ideal for long afternoons or evenings spent in the fresh air, the covered patio is fully furnished and equipped with an entertainment system. Just steps away, the jewel toned tiles of an infinity edge pool sparkle as water drifts toward a waterfall that flows from the upper level to a lower pool. “We have views of some of the most amazing sunsets you’ve ever seen, and it’s wonderful to have such a beautiful space for enjoying it,” Toni says. Clearly, they’ve found their enchanted castle—right here in the real world.

None of us can truly remember a time when Mardi Gras was canceled, nor can we remember when it was this cold on Mardi Gras day. Neighborhoods banded together throughout the South to bring the spirit of Mardi Gras to their fellow neighbors and Beau Chene was no exception. Similar to many other communities, golf carts were decorated and throws were collected. Paper mache Flambeau torches led the way as small groups of families gathered to see the sites of Mardi Gras. Kayle RICCOBONO SUPERMOM BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
S
ocial media influencer. We’ve all heard those three words before, but not everyone really knows what they mean, so vague in exactly how one achieves such a status and what function they serve. While some social media influencers really do seem to serve no other purpose than fanning the flames of their own egos, there are a great many who do just what their title would imply: they influence things.
For Kayle Riccobono, the presence she has on social media has been a great outlet for personal expression as well as a unique way to contribute
to her family. Since she began From Rouge with Love in 2016, her online presence has grown exponentially, giving her the opportunity to work with local artists and businesses as well as national brands through influencer marketing as well as direct sales.
Even with all of that going on, Riccobono still calls herself a “stay-at-home mom,” considering her role as mother to be the most important work that she does. While she technically does stay at home, her three little ones still see her at work, doing something that she loves. “I believe and hope that, as they watch me, they are learning that a strong work ethic brings great reward. They have learned to work for things they want because it won’t just be given to them,” says 30 year-old Riccobono, who married her husband when she was 18. Four years later, they started their family: Giuliana, now eight; Michael, Jr, now five; and 18 month-old Lailah.

“I believe and hope that, as they watch me, they are learning that a strong work ethic brings great reward.”
With her husband Michael away much of the time for his work as an engineer, Riccobono shoulders most of the responsibility of childcare herself. Balancing that with her blog is sometimes a feat, but she has learned how to do it all. “It’s all about time management!” Riccobono says. “Luckily, the older two are in school; so I am able to get a lot done while they are in school. That being said, I do still have to work around nap times, which means that I sometimes work into the night to make sure that I’m meeting deadlines and monthly goals.” Even though she can technically call the shots, there are still things that Riccobono has had to learn in her work. “I’ve not always known when to say no,” she admits. “In the beginning, it was so difficult for me to turn down brands that wanted to work with me. I wanted to do all of the things but quickly realized that I need to learn to say no to the opportunities that didn’t align with my brand or what I truly believe in.” The self-made woman that she might be, it’s her children who are her greatest point of pride. They are also her everyday reminders of what is truly important. “Giuliana is so incredibly smart and remembers everything, so I feel she especially pushes me to be better,” Riccobono says with a smile. “Michael is my cuddle bug and reminds me to slow down. 50

And Lailah is still young; but wow, she is funny and reminds me to always have fun!” As her children grow older, she hopes that they always remember the little things that makes their time special. “We have a bedtime ritual… It actually makes me laugh because sometimes it can drive me nuts, and I just want them to outgrow it,” Riccobono says, “but then I remind myself how quickly these years go by, and one day it will end—and I won’t even realize that we’ve stopped doing it. Every night, I sing this ridiculous song that I made up when Giuliana was tiny; and we’ve added to it over the years. Then I say a prayer and then give them all a hug, high five, fist bump, and a kiss on the head—in that order, or we all have to start over!”
“We love working with the team at VIP New Orleans & Social Northshore. They make the process so easy for us, and truly care about our success!” – KRISTEN CALLAHAN Owner of Kiki & Lolli’s
More than those silly little moments, however, she wants them never to forget her love. “I want them to know that they are always my number one priority,” she says. “Everything I do is for them. Even when life gets very stressful, we laugh a ton and have so much fun when we are all together. I hope they know how much joy they bring me just by being them!”

It was a bright, delightful Sunday on February 7th, 2021; the perfect setting for the Krewe of Dionysus’ Family Fun Day. The event took place on Caruso Boulevard in Slidell, and gave its guests the option to walk around, masked and protected, to enjoy stationary floats, music, food and drinks or to drive around in their vehicles to see the sights. Sweethearts
FOREVER By Liesel Schmidt
High school. It’s a time of self-exploration, self-expression, and—often times— unforgettable first loves. While high school sweethearts Devon Terry and Travis Aubin may not have imagined that they’d each found The One when they met at the age of 14, they soon realized that they couldn’t imagine life apart. Thirteen years of dating later, Travis made it official.

“We were at the beach in Destin, Florida, and a huge boat floated past us with a sign that said, ‘Devon, will you marry me?’ It was so special,” Devon recalls of the September day in 2019 that changed her life forever. Of course, when wedding videographer Travis popped the question, he never imagined the ways that the world would change in just a few months. While he and Devon may have made grand plans for a wedding like so many they had both seen before, fate had something a little more simple in mind. One year later on September 16, 2020, they had a legal ceremony before eloping to Bora Bora, Tahiti. Five days after their marriage was made legal, the couple had a more romantic ceremony on the beach. Wearing a modern, long-sleeved dress that was perfect for an island wedding, Devon exchanged vows with Travis, each of them promising to love the other for all their days.

While their plans of getting hitched didn’t exactly go off without a hitch, it made the day all the more memorable. “The airline actually lost one of my bags!” Devon recalls with a laugh. “That’s a bride’s nightmare. Fortunately, my bag arrived two hours before the ceremony; so I was able to properly fix my hair. I almost had to arrive to the ceremony with unfinished hair because all of my hair tools were in that bag. Since I’m a bridal hairstylist, that would have been absolutely tragic!”

Despite the fact that they eloped and were on the island with no family or friends to celebrate with them, the newly married Aubins had a beautiful day. “Everything at our wedding really represented French Polynesia, which made it quite unique,” says Devon. “Tahiti is an island that I’ve always dreamed of visiting, so it made it that much more special. We started the day with a canoe breakfast on our water bungalow, and we were later brought to our ceremony in a canoe over the crystal blue water. Following our Tahitian-style ceremony, we were brought back to our bungalow by canoe to find that the resort had decorated our bed in beautiful Tahitian flowers. There was also cake and champagne to celebrate. After a private Tahitian dinner on the beach, we came home to a flower bath. It was the best day of our lives!” Together half their lives, Travis and Devon have been blessed to find that their first loves will last forever—and they can’t wait for what’s next.

While there were no Mardi Gras parades in the cities this year, local neighborhoods decided to come together and show their love for this time of year. Golf carts replaced the double tier floats and loud radios substituted for the bands, but the joy, excitement, and the spirit Mardi Gras filled the streets. The residents of communities brought smiles and laughter to the would be watchers of these neighborhood parades.

Our trip first took us north on I-55 to Byram, Mississippi, just south of Jackson, to Daddio’s Down Home BBQ. We were greeted by friendly smiles and the smell of smoked meats. The pulled pork sandwich was dripping with a sweet sauce, while the smoked chicken’s aroma filled the air. Clearly, we were off to a delicious start.

The next stop was in Bentonia, Mississippi—though not to a barbecue restaurant. Instead, we headed for a juke joint called The Blue Front Café, a “must-stop” along the Mississippi Blues Trail, as it is considered the oldest active juke joint in the state. We dropped by and enjoyed a talk with the owner, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, before moving on to Yazoo City for our next stop.
Ubon’s
801 Jerry Clower Blvd N Yazoo City, MS 39194
While Ubon’s Barbeque of Yazoo was just off the side of the road, I knew we were in for some great meats when I saw the large tournament grill parked out front of the restaurant. The shimmering light that reflected off the barbecue trophies lit up the restaurant and alerted us that we were in for show. When orders arrived, we knew we needed more napkins. The pre-smoked fried chicken breast sandwich was of mythical proportions; and no matter how much I pressed it together, it was still a massive sandwich. The first bite was the perfect marriage of smoke, juices, and Ubon’s house barbecue sauce. That sandwich will bring me back to Ubon’s, but it is in good company with their melt-in-your-mouth brisket nachos and the fantastic cobbler. As tempted as we were to stay, back on the road we went.

Next up was Cleveland, Mississippi, where we found The Delta Meat Market nestled inside the Cotton House Hotel. Walking into this sleek country modern restaurant, you’ll find a true meat market off to the side where you can purchase anything from filets and hot tamales to barbecue sauces. In search of something light, we decided to stick to burgers and salads and were brought some of the best we had ever eaten. The perfectly grilled burger was accompanied by fries sprinkled in a flavorful seasoning; and the ranchdressed wedge chicken salad was completely devoured, with only a cherry tomato remaining on the plate. While their food was memorable, their staff was truly top in their field—especially their chef, Cole Ellis, who was a James Beard Award semi-finalist for “Best Chef South” in 2017. After a tour of the restaurant and the Bar Fontaine by Blake Campbell, we were on our way again. MARCH 2021

Our journey concluded in Clarksdale, Mississippi, where we stayed at Travelers Hotel, a quaint modern hotel with a splash of New Orleans mixed in. Located in the heart of downtown Clarksdale, it offered a prime location for us to walk and enjoy the city. It also put us within a stone’s throw of our final stop along our journey: Abe’s BBQ.

If you tell anyone you are going to Clarksdale, they will immediately tell you that Abe’s is a must. A staple in the Clarksdale community, Abe’s is located on the corner of the famed “Crossroads” of HWY 61 and 49. Sitting at our table, we were surrounded by families talking about church, their community, and—of course—food. Listening to them, it felt like I was back at home in Madisonville. When our order came, plates covered the table like checkers on a checkerboard, and I began to think that we’d ordered entirely too much. Pulled pork, ribs, hot tamales, salad, baked beans…It was all there. Napkins piled high and cups of Abe’s sauce spread over the table, we rolled up our sleeves and dug in. As our final meal along the journey, we knew we had to do it right—and Abe’s was the perfect end.

Ginger Geiger STORY BY KAYLA BERTUCCI “If it’s not a Ponchatoula strawberry, then we don’t have it in our house.” says Ginger Geiger with a chuckle. “There’s just something about its juicy flavor. It’s always the freshest of the fresh.” Ginger Geiger’s words describing Ponchatoula’s renowned fruit — those plump, bright red strawberries spilling out of an old 1949 Ford pickup truck being sold on the side of the road — is almost as alluring as her award-winning painting. A mental picture was so perfect to her that she was able to translate the images from her head to a blank canvas. In 2020, right before the pandemic swept through Louisiana, Ginger was deemed the winner of the 74

PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW In December of 2019, Ginger was a major part of the opening of a new clinic, Ponchatoula Strawberry Patch Pediatrics and Family Clinic, where she serves as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Months later, COVID-19 caused the clinic to immediately see a lull in patients. That’s why Ginger, along with pediatrician Dr. Laura Drake, shifted their focus to helping test for the coronavirus within their new space.
Ginger sees how the turn of events in 2020 led to a different type of work-life balance, and that’s why she picked up her brush and kept her hobby alive. The takeaway is this: Keep believing in your dreams for a better tomorrow, but don’t forget the beauty of your past.
“I just started painting about 3 years ago. After winning the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival poster contest, it really inspired me to explore this hobby “When we weren’t doing regular wellness visits, we even more by taking classes and spending more were able to offer COVID testing for patients and time on my watercolors,” says Ginger. “Though, I families as well as the antibody testing,” says Ginger. will say that I am my own worst critic. But when a paintbrush is in hand, she takes us back in time to a place where we could still gather with our neighbors and enjoy the historic festivities Ponchatoula offers each spring.
One statement remains true though. Ginger’s poster was only printed once with just a handful of signed prints before the pandemic caused the festival to be canceled. That means, whoever owns one of these rare art pieces should know they are already worth more than they know!
